Abstract:The photocatalytic non-oxidative coupling of methane (NOCM) is a highly challenging and sustainable reaction to produce H2 and C2+ hydrocarbons under ambient conditions using sunlight. However, there is a lack of knowledge, particularly on how to achieve high photocatalytic yield in continuous-flow reactors. To address this, we have developed a novel flow-through photocatalytic reactor for NOCM as an alternative to the conventionally used batch reactors. Me/TiO2 photocatalysts, where Me = Au, Ag and Pd, are developed, but only those based on Pd are active. Interestingly, the preparation method significantly impacts performance, going from inactive samples (prepared by wet impregnation) to highly active samples (prepared by strong electrostatic adsorption - SEA). These photocatalysts are deposited on a nanomembrane, and the loading effect, which determines productivity, selectivity, and stability, is also analysed. Transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) analysis reveals the involvement of holes and photoelectrons after charge separation on Pd/TiO2 (SEA) and their interaction with methane in ethane formation, reaching a production rate of about 1000 μmol g-1 h-1 and a selectivity of almost 95% after 5 hours of reaction. Stability tests involving 24 h of continuous irradiation are performed, showing changes in productivity and selectivity to ethane, ethylene and CO2. The effect of a mild oxidative treatment (80 °C) to extend the catalyst's lifetime is also reported.

Abstract:Methane activation by photocatalysis is one of the promising sustainable technologies for chemical synthesis. However, the current efficiency and stability of the process are moderate. Herein, a PdCu nanoalloy (~2.3 nm) was decorated on TiO 2 , which works for the efficient, stable, and selective photocatalytic oxidative coupling of methane at room temperature. A high methane conversion rate of 2480 μmol g −1 h −1 to C 2 with an apparent quantum efficiency of ~8.4% has been achieved. More importantly, the photocatalyst exhibits the turnover frequency and turnover number of 116 h −1 and 12,642 with respect to PdCu, representing a record among all the photocatalytic processes (λ > 300 nm) operated at room temperature, together with a long stability of over 112 hours. The nanoalloy works as a hole acceptor, in which Pd softens and weakens C-H bond in methane and Cu decreases the adsorption energy of C 2 products, leading to the high efficiency and long-time stability.

Abstract:Nonoxidative coupling of methane (NOCM) is a highly important process to simultaneously produce multicarbons and hydrogen. Although oxide-based photocatalysis opens opportunities for NOCM at mild condition, it suffers from unsatisfying selectivity and durability, due to overoxidation of CH 4 with lattice oxygen. Here, we propose a heteroatom engineering strategy for highly active, selective and durable photocatalytic NOCM. Demonstrated by commonly used TiO 2 photocatalyst, construction of Pd–O 4 in surface reduces contribution of O sites to valence band, overcoming the limitations. In contrast to state of the art, 94.3% selectivity is achieved for C 2 H 6 production at 0.91 mmol g –1 h –1 along with stoichiometric H 2 production, approaching the level of thermocatalysis at relatively mild condition. As a benchmark, apparent quantum efficiency reaches 3.05% at 350 nm. Further elemental doping can elevate durability over 24 h by stabilizing lattice oxygen. This work provides new insights for high-performance photocatalytic NOCM by atomic engineering.

Abstract:The selective conversion of methane to C-2 hydrocarbons offers a sustainable approach to utilize natural gas efficiently and reduce reliance on conventional fossil fuels. Unlike the conventional thermal catalytic conversion that requires high temperatures and pressures, the photocatalytic pathway enables methane activation and selective conversion under mild conditions, holding great promise as a sustainable method. However, achieving the efficient generation of C-2 compounds under flowing conditions using cost-effective photocatalysts remains great challenge. In this work, we synthesized an ultralow loading AuPd alloy nanoparticle-supported on TiO2 (Au-0.05-Pd-0.05/TiO2) photocatalyst via simple chemical reduction. Characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), aberration corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-HAADF-STEM) and in situ CO-diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) confirmed its composition and structure. The performance of the Au-0.05-Pd-0.05/TiO2 photocatalyst in methane conversion was evaluated under flow-reaction conditions. Remarkably, the photocatalyst efficiently converted methane containing water vapor into C-2 compounds, including ethane and ethylene, with a remarkable C-2 production rate of up to 10092 mu mol center dot g(-1)center dot h(-1) and a selectivity of 77%. While water vapor was not essential for methane conversion, its presence enhanced the production of ethane and ethylene while suppressing overoxidation to CO2. The photocatalyst demonstrated excellent stability, maintaining its catalytic activity even after continuous reaction for 32 h, surpassing previously reported results. With the assistant of transient photocurrent response test, in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra and in situ DRIFTS, we uncovered that the exceptional catalytic activity of Au-0.05-Pd-0.05/TiO2 originates from the synergistic effect of Au and Pd, which promotes the separation of photogenerated carriers and facilitates the C.C bond coupling of center dot CH3 to produce C-2 compounds. Furthermore, XPS characterization revealed that the introduction of water vapor replenished consumed lattice oxygen during the methane activation process, thus contributing to the catalyst's stability. This study not only offers a cost-effective and efficient photocatalyst for methane conversion but also provides insights into the fundamental mechanism of photocatalytic methane conversion. We believe that our work will inspire the exploration of inexpensive catalysts with simple preparation methods, driving advancements in efficient methane to C-2 compound conversion and contributing to sustainable photocatalytic pathways for the future.

Abstract:Photocatalysis provides an intriguing approach for the conversion of methane to multicarbon (C2+) compounds under mild conditions; however, with methyl radicals as the sole reaction intermediate, the current C2+ products are dominated by ethane, with a negligible selectivity toward ethylene, which, as a key chemical feedstock, possesses higher added value than ethane. Herein, we report a direct photocatalytic methane-to-ethylene conversion pathway involving the formation and dehydrogenation of alkoxy (i.e., methoxy and ethoxy) intermediates over a Pd-modified ZnO–Au hybrid catalyst. On the basis of various in situ characterizations, it is revealed that the Pd-induced dehydrogenation capability of the catalyst holds the key to turning on the pathway. During the reaction, methane molecules are first dissociated into methoxy on the surface of ZnO under the assistance of Pd. Then these methoxy intermediates are further dehydrogenated and coupled with methyl radical into ethoxy, which can be subsequently converted into ethylene through dehydrogenation. As a result, the optimized ZnO–AuPd hybrid with atomically dispersed Pd sites in the Au lattice achieves a methane conversion of 536.0 μmol g–1 with a C2+ compound selectivity of 96.0% (39.7% C2H4 and 54.9% C2H6 in total produced C2+ compounds) after 8 h of light irradiation.
