Abstract:Giardia lamblia is the most common gastrointestinal parasitic infection in the United States, accounting for an estimated 2,000,000 infections per year. Hospitalizations and costs are equivalent to those for Shigella infections. In the many regions of the developing world, Giardia infections are universal by 2 years of age; prevalence rates are highest in the young, and reinfection is high in heavily endemic regions. Most Giardia-infected patients in the developing world are asymptomatic, but in industrialized countries symptomatic infections are more frequent and epidemics are common.
