Abstract:Background: After the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine, about 2 million people sought protection in Poland. Providing high-quality care for migrants and refugees, especially in times of significant arrivals, can be particularly challenging. Aim: To learn about the experiences and strategies of midwives providing maternity care to Ukrainian migrant women in Poland after the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Methods: Five focus group interviews with 32 midwives providing maternity care in Poland were conducted. The interviews were thematically analysed. Results: We identified the barriers experienced by midwives in providing high quality care to migrants to be mainly on the individual and interpersonal levels and levels of management and organization. First, at the individual and interpersonal level, we have identified: fear for life and well-being related to the threat of war in a neighbouring country, depleting resources and post-pandemic fatigue, language barriers, lack of knowledge on caring for women fleeing war. Second, at the management and organizational level we have identified: lack of organizational support, and interpreting services. In the first months after the outbreak of the full-scale war in Ukraine, most strategies to improve the provision of maternity care for women fleeing the war took the form of grassroots initiatives by the staff of individual care units. Conclusions: The Polish health care services need systemic solutions prepared jointly by state and local authorities and taking into account the voices of midwives to support the provision of high-quality care to migrant population.

Abstract:It has been shown that the maskless dye-diffusion technique is applicable to a conjugated polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene). The introduction of Coumarin 6 and Nile red results in green and white emission, with the increased onset voltage for the both cases. It has also been confirmed that the heat treatment effect during the maskless dye diffusion technique results in not the increase but the decrease of the onset voltage, indicating that the dye plays a role of carrier trap in the polymer.

Abstract:Immunoreactive luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (ir-LHRH) containing perikarya, brain nuclei, and pituitary cells were studied during the postnatal development of male sibling platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus) genetically determined to reach puberty at two different ages using immunocytochemical, cytological, and morphometric methods. Ir-LHRH-containing perikarya first appear in the nucleus olfactoretinalis (NOR) at 5 weeks of age in early maturers and at 11 weeks in late maturers at a maximum number which is similar in both genotypes and remains constant into adulthood. The dimensions of the NOR and its perikarya increase up to the initiation of sexual maturation (gonopodial stage 2) in both genotypes. In the nucleus preopticus periventricularis (NPP), ir-perikarya appear at stage 2 and are maximum in number at maturity (stage 6) when early maturers have 50% more than late maturers. Measurements for the NPP increase between 1 week and stage 6 in both genotypes. In the nucleus lateralis tuberis (NLT), ir-perikarya appear soon after stage 2 in early maturers but are never seen in late maturers. Late maturers also have fewer ir-LHRH containing pituitary cells than early maturers. In both genotypes, measurements for the NLT increase to stage 2 and then decrease to stage 6. During sexual development there are differences between early- and late-maturing genotypes in the morphometry of their LHRH-containing brain centers. The timing of sexual development creates significant differences in the cytological and cytometric characteristics of the three ir-LHRH-containing brain nuclei in fish of the same age but different genotype. Our results also show that for both genotypes there is a positive correlation between the total number of ir-LHRH brain neurons and the total number of ir-pituitary cells and both are lower for late maturers at every age and stage.

Abstract:In 2020 it is estimated that 281 million people were international migrants. Migrants constitute a potentially vulnerable population in terms of facing discrimination, poor living and housing conditions, and insufficient access to healthcare services. Due to the armed conflict in Ukraine in 2022, almost 10 million people crossed the Polish border within a year of the outbreak of the conflict. The objective of this paper is to present the use of primary healthcare services by people migrating from Ukraine to Poland and identify the barriers in access to healthcare by this group of persons. This study used a qualitative research technique in the form of an expert interview using individual in-depth interviews (IDI). The study group consisted of professionally active primary healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, and facility managers) in Poland. Research was carried out in the areas regarding the availability of healthcare, the potential threats and challenges, and possible system solutions. The results showed that the most common cause for doctor's appointments among migrants are respiratory infections, including COVID-19. Many cases were related to back pain, mainly resulting from the physical work of the patients. Additionally, some barriers to access and the provision of healthcare services for patients from Ukraine were identified. The majority (75%) of respondents indicated language as a significant barrier when providing services. Based on the study results, we recommend creating a dedicated website and telephone hotline for this group of persons as well as the use of traditional media to distribute information about access to healthcare services. It is also essential to focus on assistance for older people, since they may experience more difficulties with language and navigating the healthcare system.

Abstract:The article is devoted to presenting the topic of migration of Ukrainian nationals to Poland. The work makes use of a survey under a project carried out in Polish rural areas and small towns. Seven hundred interviews were held in total. We conducted a quantitative analysis of its results here. The employed methods involve variable frequency distribution. The independence of the features was tested with the non-parametric chi-square test of independence. The association of the investigated variables was determined with Cramér's V. The research shows that the most numerous foreign nationals in the Polish labour market in 2021 were Ukrainians. The positive trend started in 2017. The respondents perceived the migration of Ukrainian nationals to Poland mostly positively, especially regarding seasonal work. They also emphasized that the Ukrainians performed work at variance with their qualifications. Only every fifth participant agreed that migrants took away jobs from Poles. Most of the respondents pointed out that small business owners benefited from employing Ukrainians. The overwhelming majority of the respondents noted an increase in migration from Ukraine after the full-scale invasion and that entire families of Ukrainians were coming to Poland. Nearly half of them agreed that the support system for Ukrainian migrants was a burden on municipal budgets.

Abstract:Introduction: As a result of increased refugee movements over the past few years, it is important to seek systemic solutions to provide medical care to those fleeing to safe countries as soon as possible, especially to pregnant women. To this end, it is necessary to know the existing problems and challenges associated with the care of pregnant refugees, and to find solutions to address them. Methods: A systematic review of the literature from 2016–2023 was conducted according to the PRISMA criteria. Results: Refugee women face a range of problems that need attention, ranging from changes in family dynamics, getting used to a new environment, fear for safety, lack of necessary support, isolation from family members, to overcoming the traumatic experiences left behind in the country of origin. Despite the adoption of assistance strategies in countries hosting refugee women, their implementation has often been far from ideal, even in highly developed countries, which has further negatively affected the mental state of pregnant refugee women in highly stressful situations. Conclusions: Caring for pregnant refugee women goes far beyond maternity care. It is an active process in which the main goals include giving birth to healthy offspring, achieving mental health, stress relief, and social integration of the refugee women themselves, including family relationships. We hope that the lessons learned from the mistakes of previous experiences will help the refugee host countries prepare for situations in which they need to assist pregnant women in crisis, including the provision of psychological support.

Abstract:This study delves into the diverse experiences of Ukrainian refugee women in Poland amid the ongoing Russian war, employing a community-based participatory action research approach in collaboration with a Polish foundation aiding Ukrainian war refugees. With the practical aim of formulating recommendations for the third sector assisting refugees, 33 semi-structured interviews ( M = 40.29; SD = 11.41) were conducted between December 2022 and February 2023, seeking to understand and identify factors building and hindering psychological resilience. Our study unveiled the complexity and diversity of refugees' situations, revealing various coping strategies and distinct resources coexisting with psychological distress. Despite this diversity, certain common and often unmet needs (stability and safety, basic needs) were identified. The study also highlights refugees' agency, the need to prioritize current needs. The findings emphasize the significance of natural social support and varied coping strategies for fostering psychological resilience. Ongoing research is recommended to track the evolving well-being of Ukrainian refugee women in post-2022 Poland.

STUDY OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC SITUATION OF TEMPORARILY DISPLACED UKRAINIANS IN POLAND

Abstract:Objective. The purpose of this study is to analyse the migration situation between Poland and Ukraine that has emerged since 2022 as a result of the full-scale invasion, to get acquainted with the integration of Ukrainians abroad and to assess their intentions to return home. Methodology. A systematic method was used to study the dynamics of displacement and the factors influencing the formation of the needs of temporarily displaced persons during the war, taking into account the experience of stakeholders in migration processes in the world. The statistical method of research was used to identify the statistical features of Polish immigration before the active phase of the war in Ukraine (2014–2022) After processing the statistical data, a visual and graphical method was used to construct the Table 1–3 and Fig.1, as well as making certain mathematical calculations, in particular, migration growth was calculated as the difference between the number of people who arrived and left the country and their share in Poland in relation to the world figures (Table 2). The hypothetical-deductive method was used to make certain assumptions about the plans of Ukrainian citizens to return home based on recent studies. The method of generalisation was used to formulate conclusions about the specifics of migration activities and policies to encourage return. Conclusions. The consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine affect not only the Ukrainian but also the global economy. Poland, as a country with a common border with Ukraine, immediately took the necessary measures. Ukrainians have the right to official residence in Poland, free treatment in public healthcare facilities and the right to secondary education for children, as well as permission to stay legally in the country until the end of martial law in Ukraine. Young people are adapting to life abroad, as evidenced by employment rates (78 % of those surveyed by the National Bank of Poland are employed or actively looking for work). The predominance of Ukrainians among migrants who stayed in Poland until 24 February 2022 (1.35 million people) somewhat simplified the adaptation of those Ukrainian citizens who were forced to find themselves abroad. Negative social factors include: living expenses exceeded expectations, Ukrainians had to live in conditions that did not match their negative lifestyle. Citizens of Ukraine with higher education were forced to work in low-paid jobs, which often demotivated and stopped qualified people from professional development. It was found that Ukrainians are interested in living and working in Ukraine. The Ukrainian state authorities should raise the issue of returning the able-bodied population to their homes in detail and explain the need for this political action. The leadership of this state should take into account the experience of other countries and express it in actions that are acceptable to Ukrainian society. It is necessary to take as a basis the policy of interest, facilitating return and ensuring reintegration. Practical implications. The analysis conducted in this research paper will help to better understand the life of Ukrainian refugees abroad, in particular in Poland. An assessment of the employment situation and the factors that influence it will help in further research to apply the necessary measures to return the able-bodied population to Ukraine.
[Smoking and periodontal disease of adolescents--results of an epidemiological survey].

Abstract:A questionnaire concerning oral health designed for young people aged between 15 and 18 and based on one produced by Tokyo University entitled Medical Outcome Study (MOS) and Oral Health Score (OHS) 8020, was submitted to a group of Polish citizens. One of the 10 questions in the OHS part of the questionnaire concerned smoking habits. 296 persons (157 girls and 139 boys) living in west Poland, took part. For a clearer evaluation of the health habits in this group, a comparison was made between the youngest (15 y old) and oldest (18 y old) groups. The Oral health Score (with a possible maximum 20 points) for the examined group was 14.4 which is one of the lowest among evaluated European countries. Smoking was most frequent among the 18 year olds (20.1%) whereas among the respondents in the younger group it was this value (16.5%). Moreover, in age 15 group, boys (29%) were more often smokers than girls (5.5%); 22% of 18 year old girls and 19.8% of boys smoked. Comparing the answers relating to oral health with the frequency of smoking revealed a connection between this habit and the presence of periodontal disease. Smoking increases a risk of developing periodontal disease. According to the results there is a need to increase an oral health education and identification of risk factors such smoking among Polish adolescents.
War and women: An analysis of Ukrainian refugee women staying in the Czech Republic

Abstract:In addition to the loss of life, Russian aggression against Ukraine, which began in February 2022, also brings interpersonal losses resulting from the need to emigrate. Parallel to the fighting men, women bear most of the burden of caring for the family. Using in-depth interviews supplemented by questions about adverse childhood experiences and administration of The Centrality of Events Scale and the PTSD Checklist – PCL-5 with 43 Ukrainian women (18–60 years old), we analyzed adaptation to the situation of emigration and the association of their war and earlier experiences with the level of traumatization. Women were interviewed shortly after emigration to the Czech Republic (3–42 week afterward). High levels of adverse childhood experiences and post-traumatic stress symptoms were found. The war was perceived as a currently negative central event associated with traumatic stress symptoms, and 79% of the sample expressed the opinion that the war had changed them. The results of this study suggest an intertwining of previous life experiences with the current need and ability to adapt.

Abstract:The assumption that people live in one place with their lives guided by a singular set of national and cultural norms no longer holds true. The same applies for migrating due to various reasons with the aim of finding a better place to live. Instead, contemporary transnational migrants are accustomed to operating in several contexts of employment, leisure and political interests that extend beyond national borders. Yet, state borders still cut through the very core of the family life, forcing migrants to take difficult decisions about leaving, separation or arranging care of children and elderly, but also creating a certain degree of choice between two or more socio-political social and cultural contexts. Events of recent years have shaken established beliefs about the potential of transnational care networks. As the experience of the Covid-19 pandemic has shown, what once seemed to be enduring rules can be suspended for long periods of time. For Poland, one of the countries affected by intense mobility to and from the country, discussions about the effects of migration on care networks are of paramount importance. As a direct consequence of mobility, the expectations and obligations that migrants (especially women) have towards the family they leave behind may change, shift or even remain unrestricted in spite of living abroad. Yet, establishing family care strategies for elderly family members in ageing societies is also based on the assumption of availability of migrant labour. Drawing on two sets of data, this article asks how intergenerational obligations were negotiated during the Covid-19 pandemic and whether the associated long-term restrictions on crossing national borders caused changes in patterns of care provision. * This article belongs to a special issue on “Demographic Developments in Eastern and Western Europe Before and After the Transformation of Socialist Countries”.

Abstract:The article theoretically substantiates the issue of social support for single mothers: the historical aspects of the concept «motherhood» are revealed and the level of legislative consolidation of the concept of «single mother» in Ukraine is determined; modern technologies of social work with single mothers and the influence of wartime realities on their form and content are characterized, as well as typical problems of single-parent families are described. The international experience of socio-psychological work with single mothers in wartime conditions is described, and on its basis, the main strategies of social assistance to single mothers implemented in different countries are grouped.Along with the theoretical analysis, the article highlights the results of the empirical research, which consisted of several stages: definition of the goal, tasks, object and subject of the research; choice of research methods; direct research; case analysis of the received data and the selection of ways to overcome the outlined problems. The results of the data obtained during the use of psychological diagnostic methods made it possible to describe in detail the main psychological and interpersonal problems that arise by single mothers at various stages of their life. With the help of the data obtained during the sociological survey, the actual and most significant problems and needs faced by single mothers in Ukraine since the intensification of the military conflict in the greater territory of Ukraine were formed.The field research data made it possible to conduct an effective case analysis, with the aim of summarizing the data and outlining the most urgent social problems of single mothers, which can be solved through introduction and implementation of social projects in Ukraine and individual territorial communities.Based on the results of the theoretical analysis and conducted empirical research, the article draws general conclusions regarding the socio-psychological problems of single mothers in Ukraine and suggests ways to overcome the main problems and increase the ability to meet the basic needs of this category of citizens.
"Why would we?" A qualitative study on COVID-19 vaccination decision making among Ukrainian economic female migrants in Poland

Abstract:Background: Ukraine has one of the lowest COVID-19 vaccination rates in Europe. This may pose a significant epidemiological risk in the context of the refugee crisis and the fact that, since 2020, SARS-CoV-2 has been spreading and changing globally. Objective: To evaluate determinants of vaccination decision making among Ukrainian female migrants (UFMs). Methods: A qualitative study with 45 UFMs was conducted between December 2021 and January 2022. UFMs, from 2 Polish provinces, differing in age, education and length of stay were invited with the use of the snowball technique. Using a semi-structured topic guide, eight focus groups were conducted in person, recorded and transcribed. Thematic, qualitative analysis was made; key themes which emerged from the data (with the help of the Working Group Determinants of Vaccine Hesitancy Matrix), were related to contextual, individual/group and contextual vaccine/vaccination-specific influences. Results: Mothers were found to be playing a crucial role in children and adolescent COVID-19 vaccine decision-making process. Universal trust in the Polish healthcare system and vaccination procedures, employer requirements and willingness to preserve jobs, desire to get back to normal and social influences were paramount prerequisites to let UFMs make a decision to get vaccinated. However, COVID-19 vaccines also faced backlash among UFMs. Negative experiences with vaccines provided in Ukraine, doubts about the rapid vaccine development, combined with lack of confidence in vaccine safety, specifically regarding child vaccination, might have a bearing on UFMs' decision about declining COVID-19 vaccine while on migration. Discrimination through HCWs during vaccination visits was also reported. Corrupted Ukrainian healthcare system, which facilitates proof forgery regarding vaccination certificates, could act as a negative influencer of UFMs' vaccine decision-making. Conclusion: The results provide the novel information, expressed in economic UFMs' own words. Findings show that influencers of the decision-making process regarding the COVID-19 vaccination are complex and polarized; elements of hesitancy may persist after migration. Any continuation of UFMs' vaccination with COVID-19 vaccine should be subject to designing accessible information to address modifiable demotivators of the vaccine decision-making process identified in this study.
Right to Family Benefits for Refugees from Ukraine

Abstract:Russia’s incursion into Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has forced bordering countries to host refugees fleeing from the conflict. Since the start of the war, approximately 9.75 million refugees, predominately women and children, have crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border. The situation remains challenging for those affected. The article aims to present a legal analysis of the provisions on Polish social assistance provided through family benefits to refugees from Ukraine. Article 26 of the Act on assistance to citizens of Ukraine in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of that state outlines five groups of benefits regulated by separate laws that may be enjoyed by Ukrainian citizens residing in the Republic of Poland, provided their stay is considered legal under Article 2(1) of this law. The criteria for receiving the benefit are twofold. Certain conditions are determined by the Act of 12 March 2022, while other conditions are laid out in special laws that contain provisions for a specific benefit.

Abstract:Introduction: During emergencies, breastfeeding protects infants by providing essential nutrients, food security, comfort, and protection and is a priority lifesaving intervention. On February 24, 2022, the war in Ukraine escalated, creating a humanitarian catastrophe. The war has resulted in death, injuries, and mass internal displacement of over 5 million people. A further 8.2 million people have taken refuge in neighboring countries, including Poland. Among those impacted are infants and young children and their mothers. We conducted a study to explore the infant feeding challenges and needs of Ukrainian women affected by the war. Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study involving in-depth interviews (IDIs) with 75 war-affected Ukrainian mothers who had at least one infant aged less than 12 months at the time of the interview. Eligible mothers were either (1) living as Ukrainian refugees in Poland, having crossed the border from Ukraine on or after February 24, 2022, when the war started (n = 30) or (2) living in Ukraine as internally displaced persons or as residents in the community (n = 45). All interviews were audio-recorded (either transcribed or had responses summarized as expanded notes) and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis using a two-step rapid analysis process. Results: Participants in Ukraine who wanted to initiate breastfeeding right after birth faced opposition from healthcare workers at maternity hospitals. Ukrainian refugees who gave birth in Poland faced language barriers when seeking breastfeeding support. Half of the participants in Ukraine received commercial milk formula (CMF) donations even if they said they did not need them. Most respondents stated that breastfeeding information and support were urgently needed. Conclusion: Our data suggests that healthcare workers in Ukrainian maternity hospitals require additional training and motivation on delivering breastfeeding support. In addition, lactation consultants in maternity ward are needed in Ukraine, and interpretation support is needed for refugees to overcome language barriers. There is a need to control the indiscriminate donations of commercial milk formula and to ensure that complementary foods and commercial milk formula are available to those that need it. Australian women's experiences of receiving maternity care during the COVID‐19 pandemic: A cross‐sectional national survey

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Background</h3><p>The COVID-19 pandemic has led to multiple changes in maternity services worldwide. Systems rapidly adapted to meet public health requirements aimed at preventing transmission of SARS-CoV-2, including quarantine procedures, travel restrictions, border closures, physical distancing and "stay-at-home" orders. Although these changes have impacted all stakeholders in maternity services, arguably the women at the center of this care have been most affected. This study aimed to explore women's experiences of receiving maternity care during the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Methods</h3><p>A national cross-sectional online survey, including fixed choice and open-ended questions, was conducted during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia; pregnant and postnatal women were recruited through social media networks.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Results</h3><p>The survey was completed by 3364 women. Women felt distressed and alone due to rapid changes to their maternity care. Limited face-to-face contact with health practitioners and altered models of care often required women to accommodate significant changes and to coordinate their own care. Women felt that they were often "doing it alone," due to public health restrictions on support people and visitors, both within and outside health services. Women described some benefits of visitor restrictions, such as, more time for rest, breastfeeding establishment, and bonding with their baby.</p></section><section class="article-section__content"><h3 class="article-section__sub-title section1"> Conclusions</h3><p>This large nationwide Australian study provides unique data on women's experiences of receiving maternity care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lessons learned provide an opportunity to rebuild and reshape the maternity sector to best meet the needs of women and their families during current and future public health crises.</p></section>
Knowledge of women in Poland on the profession and competencies of a midwife

Abstract:Introduction: The profession of a midwife, despite its long tradition in Poland, is still not widely known in the society. Both in terms of the competencies and roles, it is often confused with other medical professions such as nurses or gynecologists. In this study, we assessed the knowledge of women in Poland on the profession of a midwife. The aim of the research project was to obtain detailed data on the knowledge of women regarding the specific professional competencies of midwives. Methods: The study used the method of a cross-sectional survey. A survey of 1134 adult Polish women was conducted. A 20-item questionnaire was developed with fourteen of the questions being based on the midwife's professional competencies. The study was conducted in 2019 and the questionnaire was distributed through various social groups for Polish women. Results: Knowledge about the professional competencies of midwives increases proportionally to the level of the education of the respondents, their age and the scope of cooperation with midwives. The most well-known forms of midwifery were those related to lactation education (78.7%) and puerperal care (78.9%). The lowest rates, among other results, were prescribing drugs (23.1%) and collecting samples for cervical cytology (24.4%). Conclusions: The profession of a midwife in Poland is insufficiently popularized. Competencies shared with doctors require more dissemination. It is worth paying particular attention to the promotion of the profession in younger age groups, so that women can use their knowledge at subsequent stages of their lives.

Abstract:From February to May 2022, the war in Ukraine prompted Poland to accommodate 3.37 million refugees from conflict zones, in addition to 850 thousand Ukrainian economic migrants already residing in the country. A substantial proportion of these refugees, primarily mothers with children, swiftly integrated into the Polish educational system, with some children commencing schooling within a week of their arrival. This influx significantly diversified the then predominantly monolingual landscape of Polish schools. Given the uniqueness of this situation and the fact that Poland has historically remained mono-national and monolingual for decades, Polish teachers suffered from a lack of preparedness, resources and expertise to effectively navigate their teaching practices in multilingual classes. To understand the specificity of this situation, taking especially into account the perspective of educators, we have designed a qualitative study drawing on focus group and individual interview reports. We were particularly interested in determining how teachers' agency was activated in times of crisis. The findings reveal how the newly-emerging linguistic and cultural heterogeneity is perceived by teachers, how it is manifested in school and home environments, and the extent to which possibilities for synergies exist between the two. The findings also highlight the fact that, despite teachers' inexperience and unpreparedness for the new educational context, they instantly responded to the challenges that emerged. This can be exemplified by teachers' collaboration in material design as well as the willingness to participate in courses sensitizing to migrant students' needs (e.g., linguistic, educational, or emotional ones).

Abstract:The article aims to outline the trends of gender professional segregation occurring in Ukraine during the military conflict. Materials and Methods. The research was carried out with the use of qualitative methods. A content analysis was chosen for this study. The material consists of online textual publications, which include interviews with managers, specialists, and employees of the State Employment Center. It also includes interviews in which women residing on the territory of Ukraine share their experiences of employment and work during the war. Results and Discussion. In Ukraine today, two factors operate in parallel. On the one hand, there is an urgent need to fill vacancies in professions that have traditionally been dominated by men. On the other hand, the financial situation of women is on the decline. Women are forced to rethink their gender identity in the family and in society because of financial difficulties and their inability to guarantee a minimum of financial stability for themselves and their families. This leads them to be willing to accept jobs with working conditions that are particularly harmful and difficult. Employment opportunities for women are increasing due to differentiated demand, which contributes to the reduction of horizontal gender segregation. One factor that impedes this process is the demand for professions traditionally considered women’s domains, which do not require basic skills, and for which demand increased during the war. These professions are mainly related to manufacturing and working specialties. Given that educated and skilled women occupy blue-collar jobs, we can expect vertical segregation to intensify during wartime, when gender differences are manifested in positions and roles with differing status or potential for advancement. In the area of state gender policy, Ukraine has business development initiatives that reduce the gender gap in women’s access to assets and capital to invest in profitable entrepreneurial industries. However, these initiatives only involve a limited number of women and cannot be associated with radical gender changes in society. At the same time, the positive aspects of reducing horizontal gender segregation observed in Ukraine during wartime may be negated by the lack of or insufficient incentives for the development of preschool education. Thus, there are few effective levers to overcome gender segregation in Ukraine in the short and medium term. Achieving gender equality in the labor market is practically declaratory. Conclusions. In the context of the wartime crisis, gender segregation is a significant issue with negative consequences. A market specifically for women’s labor is emerging, and the social status of women’s work is declining compared to pre-war times. This situation may reinforce societal stereotypes that view men as more suitable for leadership positions, potentially decreasing women’s motivation and career aspirations.
Women's health status in Poland in the transition to a market economy

Abstract:Since 1989 Poland has been experiencing large-scale social and economic changes as a result of the reforms associated with the transition to a market economy. This study uses a 1996 Health Survey of over 20,000 women to examine the impact of the new socio-economic situation and of women's multiple roles on their health at the early stage of transition. We investigated the importance of selected economic, socio-demographic and cultural determinants in explaining differences in women's health status in Poland, focusing on education level, (un)employment, living conditions, marital status, smoking and life style. There are health inequalities between men and women in Poland based on life expectancy, chronic diseases and health self-assessment. Some of these, especially the large differences between life expectancy at working ages, may be attributed to the difficult socio-economic situation. The multivariate analysis of women's self-assessed health and morbidity from selected chronic diseases indicated substantial inequalities in health. Together with the behavioural and cultural risk factors recognized by medicine, such as obesity, lack of physical exercise and smoking, the paper shows the crucial role of economic factors in influencing Polish women's health. Women whose financial position is poor are more likely to assess their health as less than good, to suffer from respiratory and circulatory systems' diseases and report neurotic problems. Other factors, strongly connected with the transition process in Poland, which contribute to health problems are lack of employment and low educational level, particularly for younger women. Women's marital and parental status are also important predictors of some categories of health problems; however, their influence varies for women of different ages. Our survey also supports the thesis that loneliness in old age, defined on the basis of living in a one-person household, may be negatively correlated with health status.
