Abstract:Freezing of impact water droplets is ubiquitous in nature. Prior studies mostly focus on the freezing shapes of droplets impinging perpendicularly to a cold surface. In this work, we investigate how the frozen morphologies of impact water droplets are formed on a subcooled inclined (45 °) surface. To enhance the coupling between droplet impact dynamics and solidification, we hereby conduct the experiments on superhydrophilic surfaces under various substrate temperatures (-45 °C ≤ Ts ≤ -25 °C) and droplet impact velocities (1.33 m/s ≤ V0 ≤ 3.96 m/s) where the cooling rate is significantly improved. Intriguingly, we discover four types of frozen droplet morphologies, namely elliptical cap, half ring + cap Ⅰ, half ring + cap Ⅱ, and half ring + single ring, depending upon the impact velocity and substrate temperature. The formation of such morphologies resulted from the competition between the timescales associated with droplet solidification and impact hydrodynamics are appreciably altered by the inclined impact due to symmetry breaking as compared to the normal impact. To unravel the underlying physics, based on scaling analyses we propose a phase diagram to show how frozen morphologies are controlled by droplet impact and freezing related timescales, and find that such phase diagram can corroborate with the experimental findings.

Abstract:We report frozen patterns for the water droplets impacting on a cold substrate through fast-speed images. These patterns can be manipulated by several physical parameters (the droplet size, falling height, and substrate temperature), and the scaling analysis has a remarkable agreement with the phase diagram. The observed double-concentric toroidal shape is attributed to the correlation between the impacting dynamics and freezing process, as confirmed by the spatiotemporal evolution of the droplet temperature, the identified timescale associated with the morphology and solidification ($t_{inn}\simeq \tau_{sol}$), and the ice front-advection model. These results for frozen patterns provide insight into the complex interplay of the rapid impacting hydrodynamics, the transient heat transfer, and the intricate solidification process.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Freezing morphologies of impacting water droplets depend on the interaction between droplet spreading and solidification. The existing studies showed that the shape of frozen droplets mostly is of spherical cap with a singular tip, because of much shorter timescale of the droplet spreading than that of the solidification. Here, we create the experimental conditions of extended droplet spreading and greatly enhanced heat transfer for fast solidification, thereby allowing to study such droplet freezing process under the strong coupling of the droplet spreading and solidification. Experiments: We design experiments that a room-temperature water droplet impacts on a subcooled superhydrophilic surface in an enclosure chamber filled with nitrogen gas. We thoroughly investigate the freezing processes of impacting droplets under the effects of impact velocity and substrate temperature. Both the droplet impact dynamics and solidification are studied with a high-speed camera. Findings: We observed five different freezing morphologies which depend on the droplet impact velocity and substrate temperature. We found that the formation of diverse morphologies results from the competitive timescales related to droplet solidification and impact hydrodynamics. We also develop a phase diagram based on scaling analysis and show how freezing morphologies are controlled by droplet impact and freezing related timescales. (C) 2020 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:Understanding the freezing of impact water droplets on cold surfaces is of both fundamental and practical significance. Using the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method with the dynamic contact angle and Solidification/Melting models embedded, we simulate the impact and freezing processes of water droplets on ultra-cold surfaces, which extends the surface temperature from about –50 °C previously to –100 °C. Two distinct freezing morphologies of central-pointy or central-concave patterns are obtained and mapped at various surface temperatures and Weber numbers. An inner valley and an outer rim typically form the central-concave pattern. The influence of the surface temperature on the spreading of the contact line is greater than that of the valley. The maximum spreading factors of the contact line and the valley are related to the effective Reynolds number by a 1/3-power law and the Weber number by a 1/4-power one. Furthermore, a theoretical model incorporating the freezing dynamics and the shrinking of the valley is proposed to predict the spreading factors and freezing times of the valley and rim for the central-concave pattern, yielding a global maximum deviation of 20 %. Our results and analyses provide an insight into the coupling mechanism of the droplet impact and freezing dynamics on ultra-cold surfaces.

Abstract:Impact of a droplet on an undercooled surface is a complex phenomenon as it simultaneously instigates several physical processes that cover a broad spectrum of transport phenomena and phase-transition. Here, we report and explain an unexpected but highly relevant phenomenon of fingered growth of the solid-phase. It emerges during the impact of a binary droplet that freezes from the outside prior to the impact on the undercooled surface. We establish that the presence of pre-solidified material at the advancing contact line fundamentally changes the resulting dynamics, namely by modifying the local flow mobility that leads to an instability analogous to viscous fingering. Moreover, we delineate the interplay between the interfacial deformations of the impacting droplet and patterned growth of the solid-phase as disconnected patterns emerge at faster impacts.

Abstract:The influence of surface properties on the dynamics and freezing of an impact water droplet is investigated under various impact velocities and surface temperatures. Three distinct icing paradigms are found, namely the widely observed Central-Pointy Icing paradigm (C P I), the annular paradigm with Exterior Freezing front First ( E FF), and the annular paradigm with Interior Freezing front First ( I FF). High impact velocities and low surface temperatures are beneficial to the I FF icing paradigm. Upon decreasing the impact velocity and/or increasing the surface temperature, the I FF paradigm transits to E FF and ultimately to C P I. The interior freezing front occurring prior to the exterior one is mainly attributed to the small difference of the thickness between the central and peripheral liquid, and the large temperature difference between the droplet and liquid-substrate interface. Raising the impact velocity and surface wettability enhances droplet spreading, resulting in a small thickness difference. The liquid-substrate interface temperature is collectively determined by surface temperature, density, thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity of the solid surface. A freezing paradigm map described by the dimensionless temperature and the maximum spreading diameter is proposed to evaluate the conditions under which one of the three distinct freezing paradigms appears. A large spreading area and a low liquid-substrate interface temperature are prerequisites for the emergence of I FF paradigm.

Abstract:The impacting-freezing dynamics of a supercooled water droplet on a cold surface is studied experimentally and numerically. A numerical model that considers both the effects of the supercooling degree on the physical properties and of the dynamic contact angle on the contact line motion is established to simulate the droplet impacting-freezing behaviors using the VOF multiphase model and the Solidification/Melting phase change model. Experiments are also conducted for the impacting-freezing processes of supercooled and room temperature water droplets on a cold surface and for the impacting process of a room temperature droplet on a room temperature surface. Both the temporal droplet profile and the spreading factor calculated by the simulations agree well with the experimental observations. The maximum deviation of the maximum and stable spreading factors between experiments and simulations is 11.3%. The numerical and experimental results elucidate that the supercooled droplet spreads and retracts slower than the room temperature one in the impacting process and thus yields a smaller maximum and a larger stable spreading factor. The increases of the Weber number and supercooling degree and the decrease of the contact angle will enlarge the above differences. Additionally, three different morphologies of full rebound, partial rebound and full adhesion are identified in the impacting-freezing process of a supercooled droplet on a cold hydrophobic surface, indicating the competition between the fluid flow and heat transfer. A unified morphology map of rebound and adhesion correlating the Weber number, supercooling degree and contact angle is proposed for the impacting-freezing behavior and it presents the universal limits for the full rebound and adhesion. This work may deepen our understanding of the interaction mechanism between the droplet and cold surface in the impacting-freezing process and provides reference for the associated applications and technologies in anti-icing/frosting and self-cleaning.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact behaviors between supercooled droplets and various superhydrophobic surfaces. We analyze the thermodynamic reason of the liquid adhesion at low temperature and discuss the influence of the substrate roughness, temperature and wetting property on the impact dynamics of supercooled droplets both experimentally and theoretically. The liquid adhesion results from the ice nucleation rather than the enhanced viscous effect induced by the low temperature. The dramatic increase of the liquid-solid contact area induced by the high-speed collisions between droplets and textured surfaces leads to a larger nucleation rate and a lower critical adhesion temperature. The analytical argument of the liquid-solid contact area fraction at different impact speed throws light on the understanding of the controversy if hierarchical superhydrophobic surfaces are icephobic at low temperature. Valuable suggestions are given that smooth superhydrophobic surfaces with nanoscale roughness near the critical nucleus radius perform better water-repellency against high-speed supercooled droplets. Abstract:In this work, the freezing characteristics of double-droplet impact on three typical wettability surfaces were investigated by coupling the solidification and melting VOF models. Different temperature conditions were adopted to study the influence of icing speed on droplet behavior. Simulation results show that the motion of the double-droplet impact is consistent with that of a single droplet in the early spreading stage but behaves differently in the retraction stage. The wetting area evolution during the impact-freezing process shows different tendency for hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces: Compared with single droplets, double droplets have a smaller wetting area factor on hydrophilic surfaces but a larger one on superhydrophobic surfaces. In addition, three typical impact results are observed for the double-droplet impact on a superhydrophobic cold surface: full rebound, adhesive avulsion, and full adhesion, which reflects the interaction of droplet merging and solidification during the impact freezing of the double droplet. These findings may deepen our understanding of the mechanism of impact freezing on a cold surface, it provides reference for the associated applications and technologies in icing/anti-icing.

Abstract:The present study conducts supercooled droplet impact experiments on flat ice surfaces with varied impact velocities, initial diameters, droplet supercoolings, and ice surface temperatures. Droplet spreading at room temperature can be described by equating the inertial force to capillary and viscous forces. A universal scaling on maximum spreading can be obtained by interpolating between the laws in the capillary and viscous regimes where the dominant forces are capillary and viscous, respectively. During supercooled droplet spreading on ice surfaces, dendritic solidification occurs, forming a moving ice–water interface and leading to new droplet spreading mechanisms. The maximum spreading factor is sensitive to droplet supercooling, whereas surface temperature has a minor influence on spreading. A new dimensionless number, the icing number, is proposed to scale icing effects on a flow field, refining the law in the viscous regime for supercooled droplets. Nevertheless, icing does not affect the scaling in the capillary regime. The total influence of icing is related to the magnitude of the icing number and the competition between capillary and viscous forces. The icing number can then form a simple criterion for determining whether icing is negligible. The newly derived scaling performs well when modeling the present experimental results.

Abstract:Droplet impacting and freezing on solid surfaces are ubiquitous in nature and crucial to many industrial applications, while the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon remains elusive. In this paper, the effect of surface wettability on dynamic behaviors and freezing mechanism of a water droplet impacting on a solid substrate at a fixed Weber number of 200 has been experimentally investigated at various surface temperatures from −35.2 to −10 °C. With the decrease in temperature of the superhydrophobic surface, the complete rebound behavior moves to partial rebound and ultimately to full adhesion, mainly due to the competition between the fluid dynamics and heat transfer processes. An intense prompt splashing is achieved by altering the surface wettability toward superhydrophobicity. Raising the water repellency enhances the lift of the lamella rim during the initial droplet spreading. The receding velocity on superhydrophobic surfaces is about ten times larger than that on hydrophobic surfaces, while it is barely affected by the surface and droplet temperatures. Three distinct freezing shapes are observed in the experiments, namely, spherical ice, irregular ice, and central cap ice, and those can be explained through the analysis of the differences between the time for the onset of freezing and receding time. Some cases of droplet freezing after full receding, also known as spherical ice, include two freezing stages. First, the liquid–gas interface freezes within a short period. Next, the remaining liquid freezes upward because the evaporation through the liquid–gas interface leads to the temperature of this interface being lower than the liquid–surface interface temperature. A phase diagram described by the final equilibrium contact factor and the surface temperature reveals the conditions to form different freezing processes or to remain a liquid state.

Abstract:A thorough understanding of droplet impact and freezing is vital in preventing ice accretion on many outdoor devices. This simulation-based study investigated the effect of surface morphology on the impacting-freezing process of a supercooled droplet. Also, the variations of Weber number and supercooling temperature were studied numerically. The droplet impact and freezing process were simulated with the volume of fluid method and freezing model. A more accurate simulation was achieved by modeling the supercooled droplet and the dynamic contact angle. At the given ranges of the input parameters, the main factors that guaranteed droplet rebounding after collision were determined. The supercooling temperature and the groove width should be above 266 K and less than 0.21 mm, respectively. The droplet should also maintain its cohesion and integrity during impact. Creating grooves on a surface is novel and paves a new way to understand the impact and solidification of water droplets in supercooled conditions.

Abstract:The dynamic and freezing behavior of a water droplet impacting a superhydrophobic cold surface is worthy of investigation. In this study, experiments are conducted to examine the impact and freezing of a water droplet on a cold superhydrophobic surface whose temperature changes in a wide range between −10 °C and −60 °C. A numerical model that introduces a continuous energy balance equation is developed to investigate the process numerically. The effects of surface temperature, Weber number, and initial droplet temperature on the droplet morphology, spread factor, contact time, and rebound height are investigated. The droplet exhibits three different behaviors as the surface temperature decreases: full rebound, partial rebound, and full adhesion. For the full rebound case, the results indicate that the growth rate of the contact time with decreasing surface temperature increases as the Weber number decreases. For the full adhesion case, the variation in the surface temperature minimally affects the dynamic behavior of the droplet impacting on an ultracold superhydrophobic surface (below −40 °C). The effect of surface temperature on the maximum spread factor is more pronounced at higher Weber numbers. Additionally, the ice nucleation rate is analyzed theoretically. The results show that the nucleation rate of droplets impacting an ultracold surface remains almost constant regardless of the surface temperature and surface roughness. Moreover, a regime map showing the different droplet morphologies correlating with the surface temperature and Weber number is established. The critical surface temperatures for different droplet morphologies of supercooled and room-temperature droplets are analyzed. This study allows us to better understand the dynamic and heat transfer mechanisms involved in the impact and freezing of a water droplet on a superhydrophobic surface.

Abstract:Freezing or solidification of impacting droplets is omnipresent in nature and technology, be it a rain droplet falling on a supercooled surface, be it in inkjet printing where often molten wax is used, be it in added manufacturing or in metal production processes or in extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) for the chip production where molten tin is used to generate the EUV radiation. For many of these industrial applications, a detailed understanding of the solidification process is essential. Here, by adopting a totally new optical technique in the context of freezing, namely TIR (Total-Internal-Reflection), we elucidate the freezing kinetics during the solidification of a droplet while it impacts on an undercooled surface. We show for the first time that at sufficiently high undercooling a peculiar freezing morphology exists that involves sequential advection of frozen fronts from the centre of the droplet to its boundaries. This phenomenon is examined by combining elements of classical nucleation theory to the large scale hydrodynamics on the droplet scale, bringing together two subfields which traditionally have been quite separated. Furthermore, we report a peculiar self-peeling phenomenon of a frozen splat that is driven by the existence of a transient crystalline state during solidification.

Abstract:The collision and freezing of supercooled water droplets exist in many fields and are usually uncon-ducive. The superhydrophobic surfaces used for anti-icing generally have microstructures or local protrusions which could be simplified as small spherical targets comparable to the droplet in size. The supercooled water droplets' collision and freezing on small low-temperature superhydrophobic spherical targets with the sphere-to-droplet diameter ratio D* ≤ 1 are studied numerically in this work. Coupling the solidification-melting model, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used to implement numerical simulations. The supercooling degree, Weber number, and sphere-to-droplet diameter ratio effects on the collision and freezing behaviors and the area coverage ratio of the droplet on the low-temperature small sphere are investigated. Six typical morphologies are identified: full dripping, partial dripping, lower adhesion, wrapping adhesion, upper adhesion, and rebound. The water droplet is found to be more likely to drip down with the increasing Weber number, and the decreasing supercooling degree and the decreasing diameter ratio. A comprehensive morphology map is eventually established to illustrate the combined influence of the Weber number and diameter ratio on the occurrences of the rebound, adhesion, and dripping for different supercooling degrees. This work provides theoretical guidance for the engineering design and structural optimization of anti-icing surfaces.

Abstract:In the present study, we report for the first time the observations of the impact, freezing, and melting processes of a supercooled water droplet onto a cold slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS). A parameter study of the droplet supercooling degree and the SLIPS temperature was carefully performed. Moreover, the impact process of a water droplet onto the SLIPS under the room temperature conditions was also measured for comparisons. The results showed that the impact kinematics of a water droplet on a SLIPS under the room temperature conditions was significantly different from those of the supercooled water droplet impinging onto a cold SLIPS. Under the same water droplet temperature conditions, the spreading factors rapidly increased to their maximum values at a similar rate, regardless of the change of the SLIPS temperature. Besides, under the same SLIPS temperature conditions, the maximum spreading factor of the water droplet at room temperature was significantly greater than those of the supercooled water droplet cases. When the temperatures of the water droplet and SLIPS were relatively high, freezing process started after the recoiling process had already finished for a certain period of time. However, when the temperatures of the water droplet and SLIPS were relatively low, freezing process could happen during the supercooled water droplet recoiling process. In addition, under the same water droplet temperature conditions, the decrease of the SLIPS temperature could result in the increase of the average energy dissipation rate of the water droplet.

Abstract:The freezing of droplets upon impact with solid walls is a common phenomenon that significantly impacts various areas of social production. Therefore, it is essential to study the spreading and icing characteristics of droplets impacting solid walls. Utilizing a visualization experimental system, the effects of impact Weber number ( We ), wall temperature, wall wettability, and wall curvature on the dynamics of droplet impact and icing characteristics were investigated. The temporal evolution of the droplet's icing morphology and spreading coefficient are analyzed. The results indicate that low wall temperatures reduce the extent of droplet spreading and suppress, or even eliminate, retracting and oscillating phenomena. Under low-temperature conditions, the peak spreading coefficient of droplets is generally lower than that at room temperature, exhibiting a spread-freeze mode. As the We increases, the droplet spreads more vigorously, the solid-liquid contact area enlarges, the slope of the spreading coefficient increases, and the freezing rate accelerates. When the wall is hydrophobic, the spreading coefficient undergoes periodic changes, the droplet undergoes rebound behavior, the residence time and contact area decrease, delaying the freezing process. In contrast, when the wall is hydrophilic, the change in the spreading coefficient is singular, the droplet spreads more stably, and freezing is more likely to occur. Compared to horizontal surfaces ( We =277), the effect of surface wettability on the morphological evolution and freezing mode of droplets impacting curved surfaces is less significant.

3-D computational study of a single droplet impacting the random rough surface: Hydromechanical solidification

Abstract:The spontaneous spreading of water droplets on a low-temperature solid surface is ubiquitous in nature and critical to numerous industrial applications, but its mechanism remains elusive. In this study, a three-dimensional (3-D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, which intergrows a random rough surface, is proposed to investigate the effects of droplet impact dynamics on hydromechanical solidification. The 3-D CFD model reveals important physical details that cannot be captured easily by a 2-D axisymmetric model or by practical experiments. For instance, the established model provides a unique perspective on the complex hydromechanical solidification behaviours of a single falling droplet in terms of impact dynamic parameters and a solidified cloud map. In particular, the two-phase interfacial resistance derived from the liquid-to-solid transition is systematically discussed, demonstrating different wetting states for spreading droplets on a random rough surface. Moreover, the solidified cloud map suggests that surface wettability, substrate temperature, and droplet impact velocity have nonnegligible effects on phase transition solidification. This work may expand our understanding of droplet dynamic solidification on cold superhydrophobic surfaces and provide a great reference for related subsystems referring to anti-icing/frosting or self-cleaning technologies.

Abstract:The coupled effect of dynamics and nucleation during supercooled droplet’s collision on superhydrophobic surface plays an important role in the anti-icing capability of different superhydrophobic surface, however, without any method to evaluate it. In this work, the impact-freezing behaviors of supercooled droplets on surfaces with different wettability, including two typical hydrophobic surfaces, were investigated experimentally. The morphology, size, velocity, and nucleation rate of freezing on each surface at different temperatures were extracted, based on which emphasis was put on discussing the discrepancy of freezing processes and the formation mechanism of freezing morphologies on different superhydrophobic surfaces. The main findings are: (1) The freezing morphology on superhydrophobic surface was independent of contact angle and supercooling degree, but depended on the surface roughness; (2) the interaction between the fast motion of unfrozen water and the generation of ice nucleus dominates in the formation of freezing morphology, while the ice growth process has less influence. On smooth surface, multiple ice nucleus generating before bounce impeded the fast retraction of droplet, forming irregular-hill freezing shape whose size enlarged with decreasing temperature. On rough surface, because of the later nucleation after retraction process finished, the freezing morphology showed convergent sphere shape with supercooling-independent freezing size; (3) considering more complicated impact dynamics, including breaking and bouncing, on different superhydrophobic surfaces, an impact-freezing model was established and could be used to estimate the average frozen spreading ratio.

Abstract:Supercooled water freezes as a result of ice nucleation, propagation along the substrate of a thin ice layer and subsequent expansion of a mushy region of ice dendrites. In this experimental study, the impact, spreading and solidification of the drop are observed in a cold wind tunnel using a high-speed video system. The statistics of the nucleation times after a supercooled water drop impacts onto a dry solid substrate are analyzed. The experiments demonstrate that the rate of the ice nucleation is enhanced significantly by drop impact and continuously reduces over time. The nucleation rate increases with higher impact velocity and is enhanced by the substrate roughness. This effect is explained by the presence of the small bubbles in the liquid drops, generated by drop impact and fast spreading. The surfaces of these bubbles serve as the additional triggers for ice nucleation. Moreover, the effect of the presence of the bubbles becomes even more significant when the wetted area reduces due to the drop receding. The average number of the nucleation sites in this case increases, since the number of bubbles does not reduce despite the reductions of the wetted area. These bubbles are probably captured by the receding contact line.
