Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to evaluate Chinese tertiary hospital nurses' research output, research ability, and their related training needs regarding scientific research methodology and analyze the relations among them. Methods: A nationwide survey was conducted in China on a large sample of tertiary hospital nurses (n = 27,335) recruited from 22 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. A validated, self-designed questionnaire, consisted of a common questionnaire, the Science Research Skills Self-Rating Questionnaire (SRSQ) and the Scientific Research Training Needs Questionnaire (SRTNQ) were used to assess nurses' research output, self-rated research skills and research-training needs. Results: The nurses' scientific research participation rates (with 4.13%, 7.85%, 5.35%, and 2.04% in research projects, research attendance, papers published, and patent, respectively) and their self-rated research skills 25.00 (12.50, 37.50) were very low. However, the research training needs were relatively high 53.12(37.50, 75.00). Significant differences in research participation rates (research projects, research attendance, papers published, and patent), scientific research skills, and research-training needs were determined by age, highest education level, nursing experience, employment, technical title, administrative post, and clinical tutoring experience (P < 0.05). Female and male nurses had different research participation rates (only research projects and studies published) and scientific research skills (P < 0.05). Positive correlations were observed among research output, scientific research skills, and research-training needs (P < 0.01). Conclusions: Nurses' scientific research participation and self-rated research ability were below the optimal despite that they had relatively high research-training needs. Abstract:Objective To investigate nurses' scientific research competency and training demand in Chinese tertiary hospital.Methods It was a multi-stage large-scale survey.A total of 27 335 nurses from 22 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities were recruited to complete the self-designed questionnaire,including demographic data(7 items),scientific research competency(objective index of 4 items,and subjective index of 6 subscales with 40 items),and training demand evaluation(6 subscales with 16 items).Results There were 1 130(4.14％) nurses who had managed or were managing the research projects as principal investigators(PIs),2 147(7.85％)nurses who had attended or were attending research programs,1 463(5.35％) nurses had published papers,and 557(2.04％) nurses obtained patents.The self-evaluated competency score was 25.00 (12.50,37.50)(rangedfrom 0 to 100)and training demand score was 53.13(37.50,75.00)(ranged from 0 to 100).Conclusion The nurses' scientific research competency should be improved and they had strong training demands.In order to improve nurses' research competency and quality,nursing administrators should pay more attention to post-graduate training focusing on research competency.

Abstract:We report a rare case of a hepatic carcinosarcoma with rabdomyosarcomatous differentiation in its sarcomatous component. A 71-year old Caucasian female patient underwent a liver resection for a 4-cm lesion developed on an underlying HCV-related cirrhosis. Post-operative course was uneventful and the patient was discharged 5 days after surgery. At pathology, the tumor presented the features of hepatocellular carcinoma and rhabdomyosarcoma Three months later the patient experienced a liver recurrence, dying 2 months later for systemic disease. The reported case presents several peculiarities, i.e. the female gender, the HCV-related cirrhotic status, and the European origin of the patient. However, the outcome of our case confirms that this neoplasm pursues a highly aggressive course with poor prognosis.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The presence of tumor metastases in the mediastinum is one of the most important elements in determining the optimal treatment strategy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. This review is aimed at examining the current strategies for investigating lymph node metastases corresponding to an "N2" classification delineated by The International Staging Committee of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). METHODS Extensive review of the existing scientific literature related to the investigation of mediastinal lymph node metastases was undertaken in order to summarize and report current best practices. CONCLUSIONS N2 disease is very heterogeneous requiring multiple modalities for thorough investigation. New research is now focusing on better identifying, defining, and classifying lymph node metastases in the mediastinum. Molecular staging and sub-classifying mediastinal lymph node metastases are being actively researched in order to provide better prognostic value and to optimize treatment strategies. Non-invasive imaging, such as PET/CT and minimally invasive techniques such as endobronchial and endoscopic ultrasound guided biopsy, are now the lead investigative methods in evaluating the mediastinum for metastatic presence.

Abstract:Background: As part of the MERLIN project (Medical Education Research - Lehrforschung im Netz BW), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, graduate surveys were carried out at the Medical Faculty of Freiburg from 2012-2020. This article will primarily address the question of how the study conditions and competence orientation in Freiburg are assessed and where there is still a need for optimization. Method: The surveys were conducted among graduates of human medicine at the Freiburg Medical Faculty 1.5 years after graduation. Participation was possible using paper and online questionnaires. The response rates were 36%-43%. Results: The study conditions were largely rated as good. There is a need for optimization, especially in the area of scientific work. The level of skills acquired was assessed as good to moderate. There were discrepancies between the level of competence achieved during the course of study and the level of competence required to start a career. Discussion: There is a need for development in terms of preparation for starting a career. Compared to the professionally required level of competence, self-assessment was worse in most competence domains. In Freiburg there are approaches to further promote the acquisition of skills during studies. In order to evaluate these developments and future changes in the context of studies, graduate surveys are relevant. Conclusion: Graduate surveys are suitable for generating data on the basis of which curriculum design can be carried out or which can be used to prepare for change processes. The surveys in Freiburg will therefore be continued and supplemented with new, needs-based questions.

Abstract:Hintergrund und Ziel der Studie: Ein Ziel des Paktes für den ÖGD (Öffentlicher Gesundheitsdienst) ist die Steigerung der wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit im ÖGD. Es ist aktuell jedoch unklar, welche wissenschaftlichen Methoden bekannt sind und welche Bedarfe und Bedürfnisse hinsichtlich wissenschaftlicher Kompetenzen bestehen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, welche Methoden zur Versorgungsforschung im ÖGD in Baden-Württemberg (BW) bekannt sind, angewandt werden und bei welchen Methoden Bedarfe bestehen. Methodik: Es wurden leitfadengestützte Interviews (Fokusgruppen-/Einzelinterviews) mit 12 Personen unterschiedlicher Ebenen (Amtsleitungen, Abteilungsleitungen, Mitarbeitende) aus Gesundheitsämtern in BW geführt, die inhaltsanalytisch in Anlehnung an Kuckartz ausgewertet wurden. Ergebnisse: Die Interviewten nennen heterogene Bedarfe und Kompetenzen. Mitarbeitende äußern häufiger vorhandene Kompetenzen als Leitungspersonen. Kompetenzen, die im Berufsalltag angewandt werden sind z.B. Literaturrecherche oder verschiedene Datenauswertungsmethoden, die vor allem im Bereich der routinemäßig erfassten Daten (z.B. Einschulungsuntersuchung) eingesetzt werden. Bedarfe und Bedürfnisse bestehen vor allem im Bereich der Datenauswertung/-erhebung, werden aber auch im Bereich der Grundlagen geäußert. Vorgaben zur guten wissenschaftlichen Praxis (z.B. Ethikanträge) und zum Publikationsprozess sind eher weniger bekannt. Vielfach wird ein Bedarf nach einem Unterstützungsangebot durch Forschungseinrichtungen oder oberen Behörden genannt. Darüber hinaus werden Aussagen zur Motivation und Hemmnisse für Forschung im ÖGD gemacht. Schlussfolgerung: Diese Studie zeigt heterogene bestehende Methodenkompetenzen sowie Bedarfe und Bedürfnisse auf, die auf die unterschiedlichen Hintergründe und Tätigkeitsbereiche der Befragten zurückzuführen sind. Kompetenzen werden angegeben z.B. im Bereich der Literaturrecherche und der Auswertung vorhandener Daten. Bedarfe gibt es z.B. in Methoden der Datenerhebung/-auswertung sowie in der Grundlagenvermittlung und Vertiefung der vorhandenen Kompetenzen. Background and aim of the study: One aim of the pact for the Public Health Service (“Pakt für den ÖGD”) is to increase scientific activity in the Public Health Service (PHS). However, it is currently unclear which scientific methods are known and which needs exist regarding scientific competences in local public health departments. This study deals with the question, which methods related to health services research are known and applied in the PHS and which methods are needed by PHS-employees in the federal state Baden-Württemberg in Germany. Methods: Guideline-based interviews (focus group and individual interviews) were conducted with 12 persons from different hierarchy levels from public health departments in Baden-Württemberg. The interviews were analyzed by content analysis following Kuckartz. Results: The interviewees indicate heterogeneous needs as well as existing methodological competences. Staff members express existing competences more frequently than leaders. Various existing competencies were expressed that are used in the everyday work such as literature research or different methods for data analysis. These are mainly used in the field of routinely collected data (e.g., school entry examination). Needs seem to exist primarily in the area of data analysis and collection, but are also expressed in the area of the basic scientific methods. Topics relating to guidelines for good scientific practice (e.g. ethics proposals) and publications are also rather less known. A need for a support from research institutions or higher authorities is frequently mentioned. In addition, statements were made about motivation and barriers for research in public health departments. Conclusion: This study shows heterogeneous existing methodological competencies as well as needs, that can be attributed to the heterogeneous backgrounds and fields of activity of the interviewees. Competencies are indicated for example in literature research and analysis of existing data. There is a need in methods for example of data collection/analysis as well as in basic scientific methods and deepening of existing skills. Furthermore support offers regarding scientific methodological competence for public health departments are required. There is also a lack of research infrastructure (e.g. software, access to literature) and a legal basis. The results can serve as a basis for the design of demand-oriented methodological programs for employees from the PHS in Baden-Württemberg

Teaching implementation science in a new Master of Science Program in Germany: a survey of stakeholder expectations

Abstract:Background: Implementation science in healthcare is an evolving discipline in German-speaking countries. In 2015, the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg, Germany, implemented a two-year full-time Master of Science program Health Services Research and Implementation Science. The curriculum introduces implementation science in the context of a broader program that also covers health services research, healthcare systems, research methods, and generic academic skills. Our aim was to assess the expectations of different stakeholder groups regarding the master's program. Methods: An online survey listing desired competencies of prospective graduates was developed and administered to four groups: national experts in the field (including potential employers of graduates), teaching staff, enrolled students, and prospective students (N = 169). Competencies were extracted from the curriculum's module handbook. A five-point Likert scale was used for the assessment of 42 specific items. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results: A total of 83 people participated in the survey (response rate 49%). The online survey showed a strong agreement across the groups concerning the desired competencies of graduates. About two-thirds of the listed competencies (27 items) were felt to be crucial or very important by 80% or more of participants, with little difference between stakeholder groups. Of the eight items specifically related to implementation in practice, six were in this category. Knowledge of implementation strategies (90% very important), knowledge of barriers and enablers of implementation (89%), and knowledge of evidence-based practice (89%) were the top priorities. Conclusions: The master's program is largely orientated towards the desired competencies of graduates according to students, teaching staff, and national experts.
[Evidence-based practice in Bachelor of Nursing programmes in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland: A survey of general conditions, teaching content and methods]

Abstract:Background/aim: Evidence-based practice (EBP) provides an important basis for improving both the quality of care and patient safety. Formulating a research question, searching the literature, and critical appraisal are crucial to developing evidence-based practice. The aim of this survey was to provide an overview of how these topics are integrated into bachelor's degree programs in nursing in Austria, Germany, and the German-speaking part of Switzerland. We also aimed to show how teachers implement these subjects and how they experience and assess the implementation. Method: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study using an online survey sent out to program directors and teaching staff of all 58 bachelor's degree programs in nursing in Austria, Germany and the German-speaking part of Switzerland. For data collection, a questionnaire was developed containing items on general teaching conditions, contents, and methods of evidence-based nursing practice, as well as on the estimated thematic interest of students. The data were analysed descriptively. Results: The program directors returned 24 questionnaires (41%). Of 75 questionnaires forwarded to the faculty, 17 (23%) were received from nine programs. On average, 5.6 teaching units (SD 2.6) are used for formulating a research question, 10 teaching units (SD 4.1) for literature review, and 11.3 teaching units (SD 6.9) for critical appraisal. Half of the teaching staff indicated that linkages between education and nursing care practice have been established. The traditional teaching method of frontal teaching is used predominantly. Student interest in topics was rated as moderate by most teachers. Conclusions: Topics on evidence-based practice are an integral part of bachelor's degree programs in nursing in German-speaking countries. An increase in teaching units, active learning methods and the growing interconnection between education and practice could improve the acquisition of competencies and attitudes of students regarding EBP and further advance its implementation in practice.

Abstract:Objective To explore the current situation of the research skill training for postgraduates with specialized degree in clinical medicine and to attempt to propose the targeted recommendations and solutions,ensuring the quality of the training work.Methods There were fourty three students from the Class of 2017 at Peking University First Hospital were enrolled in the present study.Quantitative questionnaire and individual interview methods were used during the data collection in order to evaluate the current research abilities of these students and to provide feedbacks for the adoption of improvement measures of research skill.Results There were seventy-two percent (18/25) of students with master degree and 83.3％ (15/18) with doctoral degree complained the heavy working load as residency the pressure from study and the lack of time and energy.As much as 80.0％ (20/25) of graduates with master degree complained the deficiency in the development of training for research skills and the incapacity of scientific thinking'.Meanwhile,approximately 44.0％ (11/25) of master degree students and 55.6％(10/18) of doctoral degree students faced challenge to initiate research program the methods for Having research thinking,but can't find the entry of research,44.0％ (11/25) of master degree students and 50.0％ (9/18) of doctoral degree students had statistical analysis problem and 44.0％ (11/25) of master degree students and 38.9％ (7/18) of doctoral degree students had the English writing skills problem.Most of the postgraduates hoped to get research training.Conclusions The scientific research ability of students with specialized degree in clinical medicine needs to be improved through the rational scientific research curriculums and highly effective management methods.

Abstract:Objective Through investigating the clinicians’ scientific research level and weakness,we can carry out targeted clinical research training systematically,and then strengthen their utilization of clinical resources and data,and finally promote the transformation of scientific research resuits.Methods Filling and submitting the online questionnaires through WeChat,a popular chatting tool in China,physicians from 13 affiliated hospitals of a university in Shanghai have joined this research.Results 507 valid questionnaires have been received online:In terms of clinical research capacity,there seemed to be more barriers in the following issues:comprehension of the types and applications to design a clinical trial,formulation of the details including PICO elements(Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome),methodological application including the category and principle of randomization,the category and principle of blind method and how to control the confounding elements and probable bias,and statistical problems in scientific research including discrimination of the different definition between FAS(Full Analysis Set) based on the principle of ITT(Intention-To-Treat) and PPS(Per-Protocol Set),how to write a standardized SAP(Statistical Analysis Plan) and how to calculate the sample size of a trial),and various management of clinical trials including data management,follow-up management,adverse event management and so on,and writing a protocol and a CRF (Case Report Form) in a standard and professional way.As for the needs for training,the top three topics were how to design a clinical research in a standardized style,how to practice the methodology and how to utilize the statistical skills into clinical trials.Conclusions Standardized design and writing of clinical trial protocols according to the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) and SPIRIT (Standard Protocol Items:Recommendations for Interventional Trials),and the application of epidemiological and statistical methods are still short boards that most clinicians need to improve urgently,also are what they most concerned about at the same time.So it is necessary for physicians to receive systematic clinical research training to enhance their scientific research capacity.
What do the teachers want? A targeted needs assessment survey for prospective didactic training of psychiatry medical educators

Abstract:Objectives: Physicians and psychologists at psychiatric university hospitals are assigned teaching tasks from the first day of work without necessarily having the prerequisite training in teaching methods. This exploratory survey provides a needs-based analysis for the prospective didactic training of physicians and psychologists at psychiatric hospitals in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed at medical schools via email in German-speaking countries in Europe. All physicians involved in teaching medical students at psychiatry faculties were eligible to participate in the survey. Participants were further requested to recruit eligible participants (snowball sampling). Responses were analyzed descriptively, and differences between groups were calculated using nonparametric Mann-Whitney U tests (p<.05). Results: Overall, 97 respondents (male=55, female=42; mean age= 40.6) from 19 medical schools completed the survey. The respondents consisted of 43 residents, 39 specialists, 6 chief physicians and 9 psychologists. Of the respondents, 97.6% rated didactic competence as either highly relevant or rather relevant for teaching medical students. The highest overall interest was shown for bedside teaching (mode=4; IQR: 2-4) and error culture (mode=3; IQR: 2-4). Respondents expressed the highest training needs for topics regarding presentation and communication (mode=3; IQR: 2-3). Resident physicians were significantly more interested in bedside teaching (U=362.0, p=0.004) and roleplay (U=425.0; p=0.036) than specialist physicians, who were more interested in examination didactics (U=415.0; p=0.022). Chief physicians displayed significantly deeper interest in group dynamics (U=51; p=0.023) than specialist physicians. In-person training was preferred by a majority of respondents, and 27.4% preferred online/web-based training. Conclusions: The majority of physicians and psychologists at psychiatric university hospitals considered professional development for faculty to be helpful for teaching medical students. Bedside teaching and error culture management were the most desired teaching topics for training medical teachers. Tailored educational interventions are recommended, with target-oriented priorities for different hierarchical levels.

Can Research Training be Improved in Health Professional Student Curricula? A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Health Students' Experiences with an Integrated Research Training Platform

Abstract:Introduction: Project-based learning is currently the status quo for research training for health professional students; however, it alone is not sufficient for holistic development of research skills. One promising style of intervention that can complement project-based research training is a centralised hub of e-learning resources. Therefore, we explored the perception of health professionals in tertiary education, towards the E-learning hub named 'Health and Medical Sciences Research Modules'. Specifically, we explored (1) the role the Modules can play in supporting students in their research training courses, (2) the perception of the selection of topics and content quality and (3) student engagement with content. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted via the online platform Zoom for University of Western Australia 3rd- and 4th-year Dental doctoral students, and 2nd-year Master of Pharmacy students. Interview transcripts were analysed using the framework method, to identify manifest and latent level themes. Results: Eleven participants completed the interview, including five dentistry and six pharmacy students. The analysis yielded numerous manifest level themes including selection and depth of topics, and four latent level themes: content volume and balance, relevance of content to project, alignment and sequencing, and interactivity. Discussion: The present study suggests the Modules content and the online platform were well received as a complementary intervention to project-based learning. However, issues such as content oversaturation emerged as topics which can be addressed to improve the learning experience. These topics should be considered when considering further implementation of e-learning hubs to complement project-based learning, across Australia and worldwide.
Does a 3-week critical research appraisal course affect how students perceive their appraisal skills and the relevance of research for clinical practice? A repeated cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background: Research utilisation is essential in developing evidence-based practices; although many students may be generally able to adopt such skills, there are reports of barriers related to critical appraisal skills. Objectives: To explore how students perceive the relevance of research to future clinical practice and patients, and to what extent they read research (including reading pattern). Additionally, the objective was to explore whether a three-week intensive course in critical appraisal of research could affect these variables. Design: A cross-sectional survey design, with a pre- and post-test. Settings: One large university college in Southeastern Norway. Participants: 196 multidisciplinary healthcare students at baseline and 147 after three weeks. Methods: A purposely-designed 21 item questionnaire was used to quantify students' attitudes towards using research and critical thinking. The questionnaire was based on themes emerging from prior focus group interviews with 10 nursing and social educator students as well as from the existing literature. Results: At baseline, 6.1% and 7.1% of respondents perceived the research to be of little or very little importance for their future work and patients, respectively. Furthermore, 83.2% reported that they seldom or very seldom read scientific papers. At baseline, 40 different patterns of reading a scientific paper were identified. Additionally, 7.1% of respondents reported to read the introduction, methods and conclusion in combination. Significantly improved scores were found after completing the three-week course related to a) relevance of research for future work (p<0.01), b) self-perceived skills in critical appraisal (p<0.001), c) ability to find scientific papers (p≤0.01), and d) relevance of research for patients and users (p≤0.001). Conclusions: Teaching students' practical critical appraisal skills improved their view of the relevance of research for patients, future work as well as their own critical appraisal skills. Prospective studies are warranted to explore the effects of such teaching modules in the long-term.

Abstract:Background Health Services Research (HSR) is a growing field in Germany, in which Organisational Health Services Research (OHSR) has emerged as a subfield. The aim of this scoping review was to provide an overview of the field of OHSR within HSR in Germany and to map systematically original contributions by describing the organisational setting, the research design, the research objectives and the theoretical underpinning. Methods A scoping review examined published abstracts from the 19th German Conference on Health Services Research 2020. s were included if (1) health care organisations, subunits or organisational processes were mentioned as research objects, and (2) if at least one out of five research perspectives from a recent German definition of OHSR was addressed. After intensive pilot screenings within a group of nine researchers, all abstracts were screened independently in three review teams with three researchers each, and data from included abstracts were extracted using content analysis based on a self-developed detailed coding scheme. Results Out of n=468 identified abstracts in German (84%) or English (16%) language, n=138 (29.5%) abstracts were included. The majority of included abstracts addressed acute care in hospitals (34.8%), reported results from observational studies (59.4%) and collected primary data (69.6%). There was a slightly higher use of quantitative (32.6%) than qualitative (24.6%) research methods with a considerable number of studies using more than one method (31.9%). An explicit reference to theory was made in 7.2% and 17.4% used the term 'organisation' or related terms explicitly in their abstract. Discussion This review provides a systematic but preliminary overview of the scope to which HSR in Germany addresses OHSR. The organisational perspective is considered extensively in HSR abstracts, but mostly implicitly. The research is reported largely free of theory which can reduce their explanatory power. Therefore, a research agenda, more awareness as well as education and better conceptualisation of OHSR topics within German HSR are needed. Knowledge, attitude and practices towards medical research among resident doctors at a tertiary care hospital

Abstract:Background: Research is a systematic process utilizing the scientific method for generating new knowledge that can be used to solve a problem or improving the existing status of a system. Human being is living a life of ease due to research in medical field. But it is important to know that whether those who are closest to society like resident doctors are involved in research process or not. Thus, the present study is planned to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of resident doctors in a tertiary care hospital.Methods: This was the questionnaire-based study conducted among the resident doctors. Sample size calculated was 110 by open Epi software. A self-structured questionnaire was validated and distributed. Then we collected the data which was analysed using statistical analysis with MS excel and SPSS software version 21.Results: The 62% response rate was achieved. More than 50% of the resident doctors have the knowledge of p value and protocol writing. 63% students are strongly agreed that research in medical field is important while only 19% students are strongly disagreed that research increases burden over students 17% of the students have presented research paper. More than 75% student told that there are many barriers conducting research.Conclusions: This study demonstrates that more than 50% respondents have the basic knowledge about the medical research and they have the positive attitude too. But there is lack of the practices regarding research. Thus, there should be some efforts to improve practices of medical research among resident doctors.
A Survey on Clinical Research Training Status and Needs in Public Hospitals from Shenzhen

Abstract:Objective: To obtain information on the current clinical research training status and evaluate the training needs comprehensively for medical staff in hospitals.Methods: This survey was initiated and conducted by the Health and Family Planning Commission of Shenzhen in conjunction with the Peking University Clinical Research Institute (Shenzhen) from Sep 2016 through Nov 2016. It was planned that no less than 10% of the total staff from each participating hospital were invited to complete the survey. All participants filled out the questionnaire anonymously and voluntarily.Results: A total of 644 subjects from 12 hospitals completed the survey with the response rate of 28.7%. The majority of respondents (80%) have attended training related to clinical research knowledge and skills, however, medical research ethical aspects and statistics knowledge have been provided only for 40% and 27% of respondents, respectively. With regard to preference on training subjects and contents, Protocol design and development (74%) is ranked first, followed by the data analysis and summary (59%) among those researchers from medical professions. Project management and quality control course are mostly demanded for technicians and nurses (53%). Unpredictably, no more than 40% of the respondents consider that it is necessary to receive “Regulation and Research ethics” course even for those Principal investigators.Conclusions: Our survey results indicated that training subjects on protocol design and research ethics are urgently needed and relatively inadequate in China. An appropriate clinical research competency training model should be developed and provided for hospital staffs in China.
Improving Attractiveness of Public Transportation with Interactive Experiences

Abstract:New interactive experiences can change the way people experience and perceive public transportation and hence improve its attractiveness. This workshop addresses such interactive experiences in public transportation. The main focus is on new interactive experiences with travel services in public transportation. We invite both practitioners and researchers to propose design concepts, design and evaluation methods, novel interactive technologies or future research issues for the HCI in public transportation. The topics address services for individual transportation vehicle types (buses, electric buses, trains, trams), or for the whole public transportation chain. The workshop will form a research agenda for interactive experiences in public transportation.

Abstract:Background: In Germany, educational deficits or potential benefits involved in global health education have not been analysed till now. Objective: We assess the importance medical students place on learning about social determinants of health (SDH) and assess their knowledge of global health topics in relation to (i) mobility patterns, their education in (ii) tropical medicine or (iii) global health. Methods: Cross-sectional study among medical students from all 36 medical schools in Germany using a web-based, semi-structured questionnaire. Participants were recruited via mailing-lists of students' unions, all medical students registered in 2007 were eligible to participate in the study. We captured international mobility patterns, exposure to global health learning opportunities and attitudes to learning about SDH. Both an objective and subjective knowledge assessment were performed. Results: 1126 online-replies were received and analysed. International health electives in developing countries correlated significantly with a higher importance placed on all provided SDH (p ≤ 0.006). Participation in tropical medicine (p < 0.03) and global health courses (p < 0.02) were significantly associated with a higher rating of 'culture, language and religion' and the 'economic system'. Global health trainings correlated with significantly higher ratings of the 'educational system' (p = 0.007) and the 'health system structure' (p = 0.007), while the item 'politics' was marginally significant (p = 0.053).In the knowledge assessment students achieved an average score of 3.6 (SD 1.5; Mdn 4.0), 75% achieved a score of 4.0 or less (Q25 = 3.0; Q75 = 4.0) from a maximum achievable score of 8.0. A better performance was associated with international health electives (p = 0.032), participation in tropical medicine (p = 0.038) and global health (p = 0.258) courses. Conclusion: The importance medical students in our sample placed on learning about SDH strongly interacts with students' mobility, and participation in tropical medicine and global health courses. The knowledge assessment revealed deficits and outlined needs to further analyse education gaps in global health. Developing concerted educational interventions aimed at fostering students' engagement with SDH could make full use of synergy effects inherent in student mobility, tropical medicine and global health education.
