Abstract:Wastewater from processing crustacean shell features ultrahigh chloride content. Bioremediation of the wastewater is challenging due to the high chloride ion content, making it inhospitable for most microorganisms to survive and growth. In this study, mangrove wetland-derived fungi were first tested for their salt tolerance, and the highly tolerant isolates were cultured in shrimp processing wastewater and the chloride concentration was monitored. Notably, the filamentous fungal species Aspergillus piperis could remove over 70% of the chloride in the wastewater within 3 days, with the fastest biomass increase (2.01 times heavier) and chloride removal occurring between day one and two. The chloride ions were sequestered into the fungal cells. The genome of this fungal species contained Cl- conversion enzymes, which may have contributed to the ion removal. The fungal strain was found to be of low virulence in larval models and could serve as a starting point for further considerations in bioremediation of shell processing wastewater, promoting the development of green technology in the shell processing industry.

Abstract:The multistage bio-contact oxidation reactor (MBCOR) has been extensively applicated in the oily wastewater treatment. Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms, especially the fungal community information during the bioremediation of low-COD and high-salinity oilfield produced water is still poorly understood. In this study, the fungal community succession, and fungi-bacteria interactions of a MBCOR were investigated. The result of Illumina high-throughput sequencing showed that the chemical oxygen demand was the main variable in influencing the community structure within the first tank. Besides, the linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis disclosed the feature fungal taxa at different stages, revealing that the fungal community shift was driven by its functional needs. Additionally, network analysis revealed that fungal and bacterial communities were highly interconnected and possessed cooperative relationships. Furthermore, the equilibrium of fungal-bacterial communities was primarily influenced by species richness and diversity. This study provides a deeper insight into the role of fungi within MBCOR in treating oily wastewater.
Regulating the Dechlorination and Methanogenesis Synchronously to Achieve a Win-Win Remediation Solution for Γ-Hexachlorocyclohexane Polluted Anaerobic Environment.

Abstract:The wish for rapid degradation of chlorinated organic pollutants along with the increase concern with respect to greenhouse effect and bioenergy methane production have created urgent needs to explore synchronous regulation approach. Microbial electrolysis cell was established under four degressive cathode potential settings (from -0.15V to -0.60V) to regulate γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) reduction while CH4 cumulation in this study. The synchronous facilitation of γ-HCH reduction and CH4 cumulation was occurred in -0.15V treatment while the facilitation of γ-HCH reductive removal together with the inhibition of CH4 cumulation was showed in -0.30V treatment. Electrochemical patterns via cyclic voltammetry and morphological performances via scanning electron microscopy illustrated bioelectrostimulation promoted redox reactions and helped to construct mature biofilms located on bioelectrodes. Also, bioelectrostimulated regulation pronouncedly affected the bacteria and archaeal communities and subsequently assembled distinctly core sensitive responders across bioanode, biocathode and plankton. Clostridum, Longilinea and Methanothrix relatively accumulated in the plankton, and Cupriavidus and Methanospirillum, and Perimonas and Nonoarcheaum in biocathode and bioanode, respectively; while Pseudomonas, Stenotrophomonas, Methanoculleus and Methanosarcina were diffusely enriched. Microbial interactions in the ecological network were more complicated in -0.15V and -0.30V cathodic potential treatments, coincident with the increasement of γ-HCH reduction. The co-existence between putative dechlorinators and methanogens was less significant in -0.30V treatment when compared to that in -0.15V treatment, relevant with the variations of CH4 cumulation. In all, this study firstly corroborated the availability to synchronously regulate γ-HCH reductive removal and methanogenesis. Besides, it paves an advanced approach controlling γ-HCH reduction in cooperation with CH4 cumulation, of which to achieve γ-HCH degradation facilitation along with biogas (CH4) production promotion with -0.15V cathode potential during anaerobic γ-HCH contaminated wastewater digestion, or to realize γ-HCH degradation facilitation with the inhibition of CH4 emission with -0.30V cathode potential for an all-win remediation in γ-HCH polluted anaerobic environment such as paddy soil.
A Holistic Analysis of ANAMMOX Process in Response to Salinity: from Adaptation to Collapse

Abstract:The application of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) process to industrial wastewater treatment usually faces the challenge of high salinity. However, most of the current ANAMMOX sludge was enriched from low-salinity water, resulting in the critical gap between the inoculum and saline waste-water. In this work, an ANAMMOX reactor fed with inoculum enriched from low-salinity water successfully adapted to saline wastewater (500 mmol/L NaCl, 2.92%) after a long-term stepwise acclimatization. The nitrogen removal rate and total nitrogen removal efficiency reached 9.72 kg.m(-3)d(-1) and 80.90%, respectively. However, further salinity increase to 600 mmol/L caused a collapse of reactor performance. The proportion of inorganic matters improved along with the increase of salinity, which might be attributed to the compact particles observed in the microstructure of ANAMMOX sludge. A microbial community succession occurred in response to the increase of salinity. When the salinity increased to 160 mmol/L, the dominant functional bacteria shifted from Candidatus Kuenenia to unclassified Brocadiaceae, which was supposed to be salt-tolerant. The up and down regulations of polysaccharides and 5 potential in EPS were positive strategies for salinity adaptation of ANAMMOX bacteria. However, the barrier of seawater salinity (3-5%) could not be overcome. The present work would provide a holistic view for the enrichment of salt-tolerant ANAMMOX bacteria and help in the selection of seeding sludge for the treatment of saline wastewater by ANAMMOX process.

Abstract:Harmful cyanobacterial blooms have increased globally, releasing hazardous cyanotoxins that threaten the safety of water resources. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a nature-based and low-cost solution to purify and remove cyanotoxins from water. However, bio-mechanistic understanding of the biotransformation processes expected to drive cyanotoxin removal in such systems is poor, and primarily focused on bacteria. Thus, the present study aimed at exploring the fungal contribution to microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin biodegradation in CWs. Based on CW mesocosms, two experimental approaches were taken: a) amplicon sequencing studies were conducted to investigate the involvement of the fungal community; and b) CW fungal isolates were tested for their microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin degradation capabilities. The data uncovered effects of seasonality (spring or summer), cyanotoxin exposure, vegetation (unplanted, Juncus effusus or Phragmites australis ) and substratum (sand or gravel) on the fungal community structure. Additionally, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus and the endophyte Myrmecridium showed positive correlations with cyanotoxin removal. Fungal isolates revealed microcystin-LR-removal potentials of approximately 25 % in in vitro biodegradation experiments, while the extracellular chemical fingerprint of the cultures suggested a potential intracellular metabolization. The results from this study may help us understand the fungal contribution to cyanotoxin removal, as well as their ecology in CWs.

Simultaneous Dealkalization of Red Mud and Recovery of Valuable Metals by a Novel Marine Fungus Tolerating High Alkalinity and Salinity

Abstract:Red mud is a highly saline and alkaline solid waste generated in alumina refinery, which entails dealkalization for safe disposal and valorization. Herein, Trichocomaceae sp. K-2, a novel fungus isolated from marine sediment, was used for the simultaneous dealkalization of red mud and recovery of valuable metals. The fungus demonstrated robust growth at high salinity (45 g/L NaCl), good tolerance to high pH (up to 12), and capability of utilizing low-cost substrates derived from lignocellulosic biomass. Both structural and free alkali can be removed by Trichocomaceae sp. K-2 to achieve a significantly lower minimum pH (<4) in a considerably short timeframe (<16 days), and the alkali removal efficiency as high as 94% was attained. Moreover, concomitant leaching of valuable Nd, Sc and Y from red mud during dealkalization was feasible. Physical disintegration and chemical erosion by the secreted organic acids were responsible for the effective dealkalization, as well as leaching of valuable metals. This study sheds lights on how marine microorganisms can be harnessed to the green disposal of red mud, and provokes the exploration of more robust and versatile marine microbes for the sustainable and cost-effective management of other highly saline and alkaline solid waste.

Abstract:The contamination of saline soil with hazardous petroleum hydrocarbons is a common problem across coastal areas globally. Bioaugmentation combined with chemical treatment is an emerging remediation technique, but it currently shows low efficiency under high saline environments. In this study, we screened and used a novel halotolerant lipolytic fungal consortium (HLFC) combined with hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) for the bioremediation of diesel contaminated saline soils. The changes in total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) concentrations, enzyme activity, and microbial diversity were compared among different treatments (HLFC, hematite, hematite-HLFC, and control). The results showed that TPH degradation was significantly ( P < 0.05) enhanced in hematite-HLFC (47.59–88.01%) and HLFC (24.26–72.04%) amended microcosms across all salinity levels, compared to the treatments of hematite (23.71–66.26%) and control (6.39–55.20%). TPH degradation was positively correlated with lipase and laccase enzyme activities, electrical conductivity, and the water holding capacity of the soil. Analyses of the microbial community structure showed that microbial richness decreased, while evenness increased in HLFC and hematite-HLFC treatments. The relative abundances of Alicyclobacillus , Sediminibacillus , Alcanivorax , Penicillium , Aspergillus , and Candida genera were significantly high in hematite-HLFC and HLFC amended microcosms. Our findings provide a promising new microbial-based technique, which can degrade TPH efficiently in saline soil.

Abstract:To clarify the influence of the patient's sex on the relationship between level of premorbid social functioning and posthospital outcome, the premorbid asocial adjustment during preadolescence and adolescence and the 3-year posthospital outcome of a group of 163 previously hospitalized psychiatric patients were determined. A significant relationship was found between premorbid asocial adjustment and both incidence of rehospitalization and sex (p < .005). The data indicate that a premorbid asocial adjustment scale (PAAS) score associated with good posthospital outcome among male patients was indicative of poor outcome for female patients. Thus the mean PAAS score for nonhospitalized males (4.97) is statistically similar to the mean PAAS score of rehospitalized females (5.30). Further, the relationship between PAAS and rehospitalization was limited to schizophrenic patients, indicating that the meaning of premorbid asocial adjustment is a function of diagnosis rather than a panpathological index. The findings were discussed in terms of differences in childrearing practices and social expectations for each sex group. The importance of comparing individuals on measures of premorbid social competence only within their own sex and diagnostic group was emphasized.

Abstract:Treatment of saline wastewater attracts more and more attention due to its negative effects on the environment in China. Although salt removal from high-saline wastewater is well done in many industry factories, few technologies are available to remove salt from low-saline wastewater (total dissolved solids, TDS < 10,000 mg/L). In this study, ecological floating bed (EFB) enhanced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) Glomus etunicatum was constructed to remove salt from simulated low-saline wastewater. Results showed that AM formation in Canna indica was not affected by salt stress, and a higher mycorrhizal colonization rate was even observed under salt stress relative to the control treatment. In saline wastewater containing TDS 5000 mg/L, EFB with AM inoculation (AM-EFB) removed 15.9% of TDS, 19.9% of COD, 14.2% of TN, 22.5% of TP, and 11.6–23.0% of salt ions (Na, K, Mg, and Ca) more than EFB without AM inoculation (NM-EFB) in September, and 13.0% of TDS, 15.8% of COD, 17.5% of TN, 16.6% of TP, and 8.60–22.2% of salt ions (Na, K, Mg, and Ca) more than NM-EFB in October respectively. AMF increased plant uptake to Na and the translocation of Na from root to shoot, especially at the initial stage of the experiment. Additionally, EFB function declined when environmental temperature declined independent of AM inoculation, but the presence of AM increased EFB function in the treatment of saline wastewater relative to NM-EFB. This study provides a new strategy for the treatment of low-saline wastewater and the EFB application in a low-temperature environment.

White rot fungi as a multifaceted biocontrol agent: Metabolic disruption and algal inhibition in Microcystis aeruginosa

Abstract:Microcystis aeruginosa is a prevalent cyanobacterium linked to water eutrophication and harmful algal blooms. While bacterial control strategies are well-studied, the effects of white rot fungi on Microcystis aeruginosa are less understood. This study examines the impact of whole fungal liquid, its centrifuged supernatant, and sterilized solutions on the algae's physiological and biochemical traits. Metabolomics and multivariate analysis identified significant changes in 47 metabolic markers, including carbohydrates, amino acids, and fatty acids, across treatments. The complete fungal liquid exhibited the strongest algicidal effect, likely due to synergistic solubilization mechanisms mediated by extracellular enzymes such as manganese peroxidase, catalase, and laccase. Notably, algicidal activity persisted even after sterilization, suggesting the presence of non-proteinaceous compounds like polysaccharides or lipids. The metabolic disturbances included downregulation of the TCA cycle and reduced fatty acid synthesis, leading to inhibited photosynthesis and compromised nucleic acid integrity in the algal cells. This research enhances our understanding of how white rot fungi disrupt Microcystis aeruginosa metabolism, providing a theoretical basis for their potential use in bioremediation of eutrophic aquatic environments.
Enhanced Salt Tolerance in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 Through Adaptive Evolution: Mechanisms and Applications for Environmental Bioremediation

Abstract:Salt stress is common in natural environments, where elevated salt levels in brackish water and saline soil can hinder the growth of organisms, thereby exacerbating environmental challenges. Developing salt-tolerant organisms not only uncovers novel mechanisms of salt tolerance but also lays the groundwork for managing and utilizing saline environments. Cyanobacteria, which are widely distributed in hydrosphere and soil, serve as ideal models for studying salt stress. In this study, the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 was selected, whose salt (NaCl) tolerance improved from 4.0% to 6.5% (m/v) through adaptive laboratory evolution. Genome re-sequencing and mutant analysis identified six key genes associated with salt tolerance. Notably, the deletion of slr1670, which encodes glycerol glucoside hydrolase, improved the strain's salt tolerance. In addition, slr1753 encodes a membrane protein that may enhance salt tolerance by facilitating ion transport to the extracellular space. Further analysis revealed that overexpression of slr1753 significantly accumulates Na+ on the cell surface, enabling effective seawater treatment using the engineered strain, resulting in a 6.35% reduction of Na+ in the seawater. Moreover, the adapted bacteria can be used for the remediation of saline soil samples, leading to a 184.2% and 43.8% increase in the germination rate and average height of Brassica rapa chinensis, respectively, along with a 25.3% rise in total organic carbon content and reductions in both total salt content by 1.82% and pH by 1.91% in soil. This study provides novel insights into salt tolerance mechanisms and the bioremediation of high-salinity environments.

Abstract:Mangroves are of important economic and environmental value and research suggests that their carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation potential is significantly larger than other forests. However, increasing salinity and heavy metal pollution significantly affect mangrove ecosystem function and productivity. This study investigates the tolerance mechanisms of rhizobacteria in the rhizosphere of Avicennia marina under salinity and copper (Cu) stress during a 4-y stress period. The results exhibited significant differences in antioxidant levels, transcripts, and secondary metabolites. Under salt stress, the differentially expressed metabolites consisted of 30% organic acids, 26.78% nucleotides, 16.67% organic heterocyclic compounds , and 10% organic oxides as opposed to 27.27% organic acids, 24.24% nucleotides, 15.15% organic heterocyclic compounds, and 12.12% phenyl propane and polyketides under Cu stress. This resulted in differential regulation of metabolic pathways, with phenylpropanoid biosynthesis being unique to Cu stress and alanine/aspartate/glutamate metabolism and α-linolenic acid metabolism being unique to salt stress. The regulation of metabolic pathways enhanced antioxidant defenses, nutrient recycling, accumulation of osmoprotectants, stability of plasma membrane, and chelation of Cu, thereby improving the stress tolerance of rhizobacteria and A. marina . Even though the abundance and community structure of rhizobacteria were significantly changed, all the samples were dominated by Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteriota, and Firmicutes. Since the response mechanisms were unbalanced between treatments, this led to differential growth trends for A. marina . Our study provides valuable inside on variations in diversity and composition of bacterial community structure from mangrove rhizosphere subjected to long-term salt and Cu stress. It also clarifies rhizobacterial adaptive mechanisms to these stresses and how they are important for mitigating abiotic stress and promoting plant growth. Therefore, this study can serve as a reference for future research aimed at developing long-term management practices for mangrove forests.

Abstract:Microalgae have great potential for remediating salt-affected soil. In this study, the microalgae species Coelastrella sp. SDEC-28, Dunaliella salina SDEC-36, and Spirulina subsalsa FACHB-351 were investigated for their potential to rehabilitate salt-affected soils. Nylon screens with optimal aperture sizes and layer numbers were identified to efficiently intercept and harvest biomass, suggesting a correlation between underflow capability and the tough cell walls, strong motility, and intertwining characteristics of the algae. Our investigations proved the feasibility of incorporating monosodium glutamate residue (MSGR) into soil extracts at dilution ratios of 1/200, 1/2000, and 1/500 to serve as the optimal medium for the three microalgae species, respectively. After one growth period of these three species, the electrical conductivities of the media decreased by 0.21, 1.18, and 1.78 mS/cm, respectively, and the pH remained stable at 7.7, 8.6, and 8.4. The hypotheses that microalgae can remediate soil and return profits have been verified through theoretical calculations, demonstrating the potential of employing specific microalgal strains to enhance soil conditions in eco-farms, thereby broadening the range of crops that can be cultivated, including those that are intolerant to saline–alkali environments.

Deciphering performance and microbial characterization of marine anammox bacteria-based consortia treating nitrogen-laden hypersaline wastewater: Inhibiting threshold of salinity

Abstract:Hypersaline wastewater posed a challenge to microbial nitrogen removal processes. Herein, halophilic marine anammox bacteria (MAB) were applied to treat nitrogen-rich wastewater with 35-90 g/L salts for the first time. It was found that MAB, with low relative abundance (2.3-6.9 %), still exhibited good nitrogen removal efficiency (>90 %) under 35-70 g/L salts. The specific anammox activity peaked at 180.16 mg N/(g·VSS·d) at 65 g/L salts. MAB secreted more extracellular polymeric substances to resist the adverse effects of hypersaline stress. Nevertheless, the nitrogen removal deteriorated at 75 g/L salts, and further collapsed as the salinity increased. At 90 g/L salts, total nitrogen removal rate decreased by 74 % compared with that of 35 g/L salts. Besides, SBR1031 increased from 12.0 % (35 g/L salts) to 17.4 % (90 g/L salts) and became the dominant bacterial genus in the reactor. This work shed light on the treatment of hypersaline wastewater through MAB.

Abstract:Mangrove fungi, their ecological role in mangrove ecosystems, their bioproducts, and potential applications are reviewed in this article. Mangrove ecosystems can play an important role in beach protection, accretion promotion, and sheltering coastlines and creeks as barriers against devastating tropical storms and waves, seawater, and air pollution. The ecosystems are characterized by high average and constant temperatures, high salinity, strong winds, and anaerobic muddy soil. The mangrove ecosystems also provide the unique habitats for the colonization of fungi which can produce different kinds of enzymes for industrial uses, recycling of plants and animals in the ecosystems, and the degradation of pollutants. Many mangrove ecosystem-associated fungi also can produce exopolysaccharides, Ca<sup>2+</sup>-gluconic acid, polymalate, liamocin, polyunsaturated fatty acids, biofuels, xylitol, enzymes, and bioactive substances, which have many potential applications in the bioenergy, food, agricultural, and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, mangrove ecosystems are rich bioresources for bioindustries and ecology. It is necessary to identify more mangrove fungi and genetically edit them to produce a distinct array of novel chemical entities, enzymes, and bioactive substances.

Strain Screening and Conditions Optimization in Microalgae-Based Monosodium Glutamate Wastewater (MSGW) Treatment

Abstract:The wastewater generated from monosodium glutamate production displays distinctive features of elevated salinity, organic content, as well as nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, and its indiscriminate disposal poses a significant threat to water quality and can cause detrimental impacts on aquatic ecosystems. The application of microalgae for monosodium glutamate wastewater (MSGW) treatment can result in simultaneous wastewater purification and biomass recovery. In this study, the algae species capable of thriving in diluted MSGW were screened, and the wastewater composition and growth conditions were optimized to obtain high algal biomass and nutrient removal rate. Among the tested species, Chlorella sp. FACHB-30 demonstrated superior potential for MSGW treatment and achieved a maximum specific growth rate of 0.28 d−1 and the highest COD removal rate of 61.50% over a 20-day cultivation period with trace metals supplementation in the wastewater. Moreover, the cultivation of Chlorella sp. FACHB-30 yielded considerable reductions in total phosphate (69.09%), total nitrogen (26.93%), and NH4+-N (51.91%) levels in the wastewater. The optimum conditions for achieving maximum algal density and highest nutrient removal were determined as light intensity of 150 μmol m−2s−1, inoculation concentration of 1 × 105 cells mL−1, and an iron concentration of 10−5 mol L−1. Finally, under the optimized conditions, the removal rates of total phosphate, total nitrogen, NH4+-N, and COD were determined to be 87.60%, 68.05%, 75.89%, and 77.96%, respectively. The findings of this study highlight the potential for enhancing the nutrient removal efficiency of microalgae-based MSGW treatment through the implementation of a combined approach that involves the selection of tolerant strains, optimization of cultivation conditions, and refinement of wastewater composition.

Abstract:In this study, anaerobic granular sludge was subjected to domestication using saline organic wastewater to investigate the impact of salt-tolerant domestication and the addition of compatible solutes on effluent quality, microbial community succession and organic matter metabolic pathways. After 200 days, the relative abundance of Euryarchaeota significantly increased from 7.99% to 33.54%, with Methanomicrobia dominating and accounting for 93.12% of Euryarchaeota. To adapt to the high osmotic pressure, enzymes involved in ATP binding and active ion transport across the membrane exhibited a substantial increase in relative abundance, with five representative enzymes surpassing 0.3%. Notably, key enzymes in the glycolytic metabolic pathway (gpmI, ENO and DLAT) reached final relative abundances of 0.0690, 0.0903 and 0.0571%, respectively. Similarly, the relative abundances of fwdA and cdhA, key enzymes in the methanogenic metabolic pathway, increased to 0.0857% and 0.1228%. These changes were reflected in the treated effluent, as the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal decreased from 82.10% to 64.55% with a gradual increase in salinity (Nacl concentration) from 2 to 20g/L, but increased to 70.13% after the addition of 2mmol/L betaine. The study demonstrates that the gradual elevation of salinity during domestication and the exogenous addition of betaine have a positive effect on the stability of anaerobic systems in high salinity environments, providing a viable strategy for the anaerobic treatment of saline organic wastewater.

Abstract:The Zero discharge technology has become an important pathroute for sustainable development of high salt wastewater treatment. However, the cohabitation of organic and inorganic debris can cause serious problems such membrane clogging and the formation of hazardous impurity salts that further restrict the recovery of all salt varieties by evaporating and crystallizing. In highly salinized wastewater, biological treatments offer advantages in terms of cost and sustainability when used as a pre-treatment step to eliminate organic debris. On the other hand, high salinity is always a major obstacle to microbial diversity, abundance, and activity, which can result in low organic matter removal effectiveness or the failure of the microbial treatment system. Biofortification techniques can attenuate the negative effects of salt stress and other unfavourable conditions on microorganisms, while the regulation mechanisms of microbial and community collaboration by fortification methods have been an open question. Therefore, a comprehensive summary of the types, mechanisms, and effects of the major biofortification techniques is proposed. This review dialyzes the characteristics and sources of hypersaline wastewater and the main treatment methods. Then, the mechanisms of microbial salt tolerance are summarized and discussed based on microbial characteristics and the protective effects provided by the processes. Finally, the research and application of the main bioaugmentation methods are developed in detail, describing the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the different enhancement methods in their implementation. This review provides a more comprehensive perspective on the future engineering applications of bioaugmentation technology, and explores in depth the possibilities of applying biological methods to high-salinity wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Studies have found that nanozyme materials can be an potential solution for microorganisms with insufficient enzyme activities to meet habitat requirements, bringing new application prospects for the remediation of soil pollution via inoculation with exogenous microorganisms. However, few studies have investigated the mechanism of microbial sensitivity regulation when using nanozyme materials. In this study, we attempt to fill this gap by investigating the microbial sensitivity regulation mechanism (MSRM) on typical paddy field heavy metal pollution (As 3+ and Cr 6+ ) using nanozyme nanoMn 3 O 4 -coated microbial populations (NMCMP). Analysis of maintained enzyme activity, changes in microbial community structure and heavy metal content showed that the sensitivity of microbial community composition can be significantly altered by adding nanoMn 3 O 4 -coated microbial communities via 16s DNA and metagenomic analyses. Flavisolibacter and Arthrobacter were confirmed as two main bacteria species relevant to the remediation of the heavy metal pollution (As 3+ and Cr 6+ ). In addition, we also found that NMCMP could enhance the reduction of Cr 6+ level and inhibit the release and rapid oxidation of As 3+ from As 2 H 2 S 3 during the process of remediation. This study will provide important research value for the remediation of soil heavy metal pollution by microbial methods.

Abstract:A halotolerant consortium between microalgae and methanotrophic bacteria could effectively remediate in situ CH 4 and CO 2 , particularly using saline wastewater sources. Herein, Methylomicrobium alcaliphilum 20Z was demonstrated to form a mutualistic association with Chlorella sp. HS2 at a salinity level above 3.0%. Co-culture significantly enhanced the growth of both microbes, independent of initial inoculum ratios. Additionally, increased methane provision in enclosed serum bottles led to saturated methane removal. Subsequent analyses suggested nearly an order of magnitude increase in the amount of carbon sequestered in biomass in methane-fed co-cultures, conditions that also maintained a suitable cultural pH suitable for methanotrophic growth. Collectively, these results suggest a robust metabolic coupling between the two microbes and the influence of the factors other than gaseous exchange on the assembled consortium. Therefore, multi-faceted investigations are needed to harness the significant methane removal potential of the identified halotolerant consortium under conditions relevant to real-world operation scenarios.
