Abstract:As a new economic form, the digital economy is not only empowering new impetus to economic growth, but also reshaping specific business forms of economical operation. Therefore, we conducted an empirical test to verify the impact and mechanism of pollution reduction in the digital economy, based on the panel data of 280 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2019. The results show that, first the development of the digital economy indeed has the positive effect of realizing pollution reduction. The results of mediating effect test indicate the influence mechanism mainly rely on promoting the upgrading of industrial structure (structural effect) and upgrading the level of green technology innovation (technical effect). Second, the results of regional heterogeneity analysis show that the emission reduction effect of digital economy development on four pollutants is characterized by weakness in the east and strong in the west in regional distribution. Third, the development of digital economy has a threshold effect on the level of economic development to achieve its pollution reduction effect. Further identification of the threshold effect indicates that the higher the level of economic development, the better in emission reduction effect.

Abstract:With the recent technological advancements, such as the internet, big data, and cloud computing, China's digital economy plays a significant role in economic development. However, the digital economy may also affect the environmental quality, but the prevailing literature is scant on how the digital economy affects urban environmental pollution. To fill this gap, this study established an urban digital economy index system based on 277 prefecture-level cities in China and calculated their digital economy indicators from 2011 to 2019. Using a two-way fixed effects model, a mediation effect model and a moderation effect model, a multi-dimensional empirical test is conducted to determine the impact of the digital economy on urban pollution effects and internal mechanisms. Empirical results indicate that the digital economy significantly reduces urban pollutant emissions and shows spatial heterogeneity. After a series of robustness tests and endogenous analysis, our findings are consistent. The mechanism test results reveal that the digital economy can help mitigate pollution emissions through improved industrial structure, promotion of green innovation, and financial development. Further, the empirical results also demonstrate that government intervention can significantly enhance the negative environmental impact of the digital economy. Moreover, the findings from the heterogeneity test (i.e., city size, time, and space heterogeneity) show that the development of the digital economy is more significant in reducing urban pollution in large and eastern coastal cities. While the digital economy development policy impact of the digital economy on reducing pollution has been found after being adjusted by the national strategy. Our study enriches the research regarding the causes and mechanisms of environmental pollution, provides empirical evidence that the digital economy contributes to pollution control and provides decision-making references for enabling the growth of the digital economy and maximizing its pollution reduction power.

Abstract:The digital economy is a crucial focus for realizing the transformation of old and new kinetic energy in China. It is widely integrated with various fields of the economy and society, constantly providing a new dynamic mechanism with synergetic control of environmental pollution and carbon emissions (SCEPCE). Based on panel data from 292 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2021, this study discusses the spatial effects and mechanisms of the digital economy on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. The study found that: (1) The digital economy has direct and indirect influences on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. The digital economy can drive reductions in pollutants and carbon dioxide emissions by upgrading industrial structures and transforming energy structures. (2) Green innovation plays an active regulatory role in the digital economy and structural optimization, particularly in the context of SCEPCE. This interference helps mitigate the impact of the digital economy on pollution and carbon emissions. (3) The digital economy has a significant spatial spillover effect on the coordinated control of pollutants and carbon emissions. (4) The influence mechanism of the digital economy on pollution reduction and carbon reduction synergy exhibits geographical heterogeneity, resource endowment heterogeneity. To enhance the synergy of pollution reduction and carbon reduction, it is essential to bolster support and optimise the digital economy at various levels. This includes reinforcing regional balance, considering spatial spillover effects, and enhancing the leading role of developed cities in the region.

Abstract:Our study aims to investigate whether and how the development of the digital economy can reduce air pollutant emissions in China. Specifically, using a fixed effect model and an empirical test that exploits pollutant emissions in 30 Chinese provinces from 2011 to 2020, we explore the impact of digital economy development on air pollution through three mechanisms: public attention to environmental pollution, production efficiency, and environmental governance efficiency. Additionally, we provide heterogeneity analysis based on regions, industrial structure, and years of schooling. Findings are crucial for policymakers and environmentalists concerned about economic development's effects on the environment.

You can register here Lately, the ongoing issue of haze pollution in multiple cities across China has had a profound impact on the residents' well-being and overall health. The urgent necessity to address haze pollution is undeniable. Meanwhile, the rapidly evolving digital economy has sprung up as a pivotal driver for China's economic growth, providing innovative approach to tackle haze pollution. This research explores the impact of the digital economy on haze pollution through utilizing the big data pilot zone as a quasi-natural experiment. Panel data from 280 prefecture-level cities in China is adopted, covering the period from 2011 through 2020. This analysis incorporates various models, namely difference-in-differences model (DID), mediation effect model, and difference-in-differences spatial Durbin model. The findings highlight the substantial contributions of digital economy in alleviating haze pollution. Furthermore, these findings hold true even after a series of rigorous robustness checks. The constraint influence of the digital economy on haze pollution is particularly prominent in metropolitan areas, cities with elevated administrative levels, primary environmental protection cities, as well as economically developed cities. Financial development and technological innovation serve as important mechanisms through which the digital economy suppresses haze pollution. After accounting for spatial factors, the digital economy exhibits consequential spillover effects, leading to substantial inhibition of haze pollution in surrounding cities as well as locally. The novel aspects of this paper are as follows: Firstly, it regards the establishment of big data experimental zones as the exogenous policy shock of digital economy and employs a multi period DID model to evaluate the impact of the digital economy on haze pollution. Secondly, it explores the transmission pathways through which the digital economy affects haze pollution from the perspectives of financial development and technological innovation. Thirdly, it investigates the heterogeneous characteristics of the impact of the digital economy on haze pollution. Fourthly, it examines the spatial spillover effects of the digital economy on haze pollution from the perspective of spatial econometrics.

Abstract:Introduction: The digital economy plays a crucial role in achieving synergistic reduction in air pollutants and carbon emissions. Methods: A super-efficiency slack-based model with undesirable outputs was applied to systematically calculate the efficiency of synergistic air pollutants and carbon emissions governance (ESACG). This study used the difference-in-differences (DID), propensity score matching-DID, quantile DID methods and generalized random forest model to empirically test the impact and its heterogeneity of the digital economy on the ESACG, with the establishment of the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone as a quasi-natural experiment. Results: 1) The digital economy significantly improved the ESACG by optimizing industrial structure in source management, improving energy utilization efficiency in process control, and promoting green technological innovation in end blocking. The digital literacy of talent and digital financial support strengthened its enhancing effect, but the digital infrastructure was insignificant. 2) The digital economy significantly enhanced the ESACG in the cross-regional and regional demonstration zones but inhibited it in the pioneering zones. Its impact on the ESACG in big data infrastructure-integrated development zones was insignificant. 3) Between the 25th and 90th quantiles, there was an asymmetric inverted U-shaped influence of the digital economy on the ESACG, with no discernible impact at the 10th quantile. In cities with better economic development and technological innovation, the contribution of the digital economy to the ESACG was more significant. Discussion: It is necessary to continuously advance the construction of existing pilot zones, steadily expand their coverage, and differentiate between harnessing the experiences of reducing pollution and carbon emissions to formulate strategies for synergistic regional governance.

Abstract:Environmental pollution has become a pressing global issue, severely threatening human health and ecosystems. As an emerging driver of economic development in countries worldwide, the digital economy (DE) has the potential to enhance resource utilization efficiency and promote the development of clean technologies, thereby reducing environmental pollution. Based on the panel data of 267 cities in China from 2012 to 2021, the spatial econometric model is used to test the impact of DE on environmental pollution. The mediating effect model is used to explore the transmission mechanism of DE affecting environmental pollution. The panel threshold model is used to examine the threshold effect of marketization. The results are as follows: (1) DE can significantly reduce environmental pollution. The conclusion is still valid after conducting robustness tests such as selecting historical data as instrumental variables and the “Broadband China” pilot as a quasi-natural experiment. (2) From the perspective of transmission mechanism, DE can reduce environmental pollution through green technology innovation and industrial structure upgrading. (3) From the perspective of spatial spillover effect, DE can reduce the environmental pollution level of surrounding cities. (4) From the perspective of threshold effect, DE has obvious market-oriented single threshold effect on environmental pollution. When the marketization level crosses the threshold of 11.6611, the emission reduction effect of DE is significant. (5) From the perspective of heterogeneity, DE has a heterogeneous impact on environmental pollution in cities with different geographic locations, resource endowments and administrative level. Regarding geographical heterogeneity, DE can effectively reduce environmental pollution in eastern and central regions, but has no significant impact on environmental pollution in western regions. Regarding the heterogeneity of resource endowment, compared to non-resource-based cities, resource-based cities suffer more from the negative effects of DE on their environment. Regarding the heterogeneity of administrative levels, compared with non-central cities, the DE of central cities has a greater emission reduction effect. Based on empirical results, this paper proposes strategic recommendations in areas such as enhancing the application of DE in emission reduction, upgrading industrial structures, promoting green technology innovation, and improving the level of marketization. This study not only enriches the research of DE and environmental pollution, but also provides a reference for the formulation of environmental pollution control policies.

Abstract:The digital economy (DE) is increasingly recognized as a principal driver of high-quality economic development. With the dual carbon goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality, it is essential to urgently discuss whether the DE can also provide an aid to restrain carbon pollution. For this reason, the purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of the DE on urban carbon pollution and its underlying mechanism, utilizing balance panel data for Chinese cities from 2012 to 2021. Additionally, this study adopts the quasi-natural experiment in the National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone to empirically analyze this relationship using the Difference-in-Differences (DID) and mediating effect models. The findings indicate that the DE can significantly decrease carbon pollution, exhibiting a clear carbon pollution reduction effect. These conclusions remain valid even after implementing various robustness tests. This examination of the action mechanism reveals that it is effective for the DE to mitigate urban carbon pollution by enhancing energy efficiency and attracting foreign investment. Further analysis of heterogeneity reveals that it is more effective for the DE to reduce carbon pollution in the non-resource-based cities, large cities, eastern regions, and cities with high urbanization levels as compared to the resource-based cities, small or mega cities, central and western regions, and cities with a low level of urbanization. These findings not only offer robust objective evidence for the positive influence of the DE on carbon pollution reduction, but also present valuable policy implications for minimizing carbon pollution and enhancing environmental quality.

Abstract:With the rapid development of new generation of information technology and the continuous deterioration of ecological environment, the environmental effect of digital economy has begun to receive attention. Based on panel data from 30 provinces in China during the period of 2014–2020, this study investigates the impact and mechanisms of digital economy on environmental quality using the fixed effect model and moderating effect model. The results show that the digital economy can significantly inhibit environmental pollution. The inhibitory effect of digital economy shows obvious regional heterogeneity, which is the strongest in the west, followed by the east, and the weakest in the center. The economic development level and income distribution inequality play positive and negative roles in regulating the negative linkage between digital economy and environmental pollution, respectively. The government should implement a differentiated strategy to promote the comprehensive development of digital economy and maximize its environmental effects, accelerate the integrated development of urban and rural economies through inclusive growth, and optimize the moderating effect of economic development level and income distribution inequality.

Abstract:With the rapid development of digital technology worldwide, can the digital economy promote not only macroeconomic growth but also green and low-carbon economic development? On the basis of the urban panel data in China from 2000 to 2019, this study uses a staggered difference-in-difference (DID) model to explore whether or how the digital economy reduces carbon emission intensity. Results show the following. (1) The development of digital economy is conducive to reducing the carbon emission intensity of local cities, and the above conclusion is relatively stable. (2) There is strong heterogeneity in the impact of digital economy development on carbon emission intensity in different regions and different types of cities. Chinese smart city construction in southern cities, non-resource-based cities, and environment protection-focused cities significantly reduces urban carbon emission intensity. (3) Mechanism analysis shows that the digital economy can promote the upgrading of the industrial structure, improve the efficiency of energy utilization, improve the efficiency of environmental regulation, reduce the mobility of the urban population, improve the environmental protection awareness of residents, promote the modernization of social services, and achieve emission reduction from the "production side" and "living side." (4) Further analysis shows the change of the influence between the two in the space–time dimension. In the spatial dimension, the development of digital economy can promote the reduction of carbon emission intensity in neighboring cities. In the time dimension, the early stage of digital economy development may increase the intensity of urban carbon emissions. The energy-intensive nature of digital infrastructure leads to lower energy utilization efficiency in cities, thus improving urban carbon emission intensity.

Abstract:The digital economy and ecological environment are two major issues related to high-quality economic development. Scholars have not yet reached a unified conclusion about the link between the digital economy and pollution emissions, and the impact mechanism of the former on the latter needs further study. Using data from 278 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2019, this research employs coupling coordination analysis, fixed effect analysis and mediation analysis to examine the heterogeneous impact mechanisms of the expansion of the digital economy on urban pollution reduction from many angles. It discovers that, first, the growth of the digital economy has decreased the discharge of urban pollutants overall. Second, the impact mechanisms of the digital economy are heterogeneous. From a regional perspective, industrial structure supererogation plays an intermediary role in the relationship between digital economy development and pollution reduction in the eastern and central regions, but the mediating effect is not significant in the western and northeastern regions. In terms of the city development level, industrial structure supererogation has significantly mediated the relationship between the growth of the digital economy and the reduction of pollution in first- and second-tier cities, but this mediating effect is not significant in third-tier and other cities. Third, the above conclusions are still valid after the robustness test is carried out using instrumental variable estimation, replacement of the estimation method, and replacement of explanatory variables. This study is a useful contribution to research on the effects of the digital economy and the factors influencing pollution reduction. The results advance the study of the digital economy and also have practical implications for improving China’s ecological environment and fostering high-quality economic growth. Finally, we provide policy suggestions for the coordinated promotion of the digital economy’s development, industrial structure supererogation and environmental pollution reduction.

Abstract:With the rapid development of the digital economy, understanding the relationship between the digital economy and the environment is increasingly important for sustainable development. This study mainly studies the nexus of digital economy development and environmental quality for 217 cities in China from 2003 to 2018. Specifically, this study first evaluates the degree of coupling coordination between the digital economy system and the environmental system. Results show that the coupling coordination degree between the digital economy system and the environmental system shows a fluctuating rise from 2003 to 2018. Furthermore, this study empirically investigates the impact of digital economy development on PM2.5, which represents environmental quality, and results show that digital economy development significantly reduces PM2.5. The above finding is still valid by using the quasi-natural experiment of broadband China for the robustness test. Urbanization, population density, and economic development have caused threshold effects. When the urbanization rate and population density exceed a certain threshold, the digital economy significantly inhibits PM2.5. In contrast, when the per capita GDP exceeds a certain threshold, the digital economy significantly promotes PM2.5. The digital economy mainly affects pollutant emissions through direct and technological effects.

Abstract:In the context of global digitalization, fostering the expansion of the digital economy holds immense importance in promoting energy efficiency and reducing emissions. Utilizing a sample of 281 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2019, this research analyzes the impact of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions in China. This study employs various methods, including principal component analysis, fixed-impact model, and mediating effect model. Based on the research findings, the development of the digital economy has the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions in metropolitan areas. Moreover, these effects are especially noticeable in cities located to the east of the Hu Huanyong Line. These cities are characterized by limited reliance on resources and a high level of marketization. Further research reveals that promoting technical innovation and modernizing industrial structures can reduce the intensity of carbon emissions in metropolitan areas. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the effective reduction of carbon emissions in developing countries during the evolution of the digital economy. It acts as a crucial cornerstone for guiding policies and executing strategies aimed at fostering top-tier economic development in the future. The findings of this study confirm the inhibitory effect of the digital economy on urban carbon emission intensity. However, this study has limitations in data samples, research scope, and depth of mechanism analysis, which prevent a full exploration of the spatial spillover effect of the digital economy and other factors. Therefore, the conclusions drawn in this study can only provide empirical evidence for identifying the relationship between the digital economy and carbon emission intensity to a certain extent. Future research should aim to expand on these aspects.

Abstract:The development of the digital economy radiates to national ecological protection and resource utilization, holding the key to haze governance. However, as the largest developing country, the impact of China’s digital economy on haze pollution has received little attention. Based on the panel data of 275 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2018, this paper studies the impact and mechanism of digital economy development on haze pollution. The results of fixed effect model show that the development of digital economy has a significant negative impact on urban haze pollution in China. The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the development of digital economy has a more significant inhibitory effect on the haze pollution of resource-based cities, non-resource-based cities, eastern cities, and large cities. The quasi-natural experimental results show that the establishment of the “national big data comprehensive experimental area” is conducive to haze pollution control, which proves the conclusion that the digital economy can significantly reduce haze pollution. The development of digital economy can significantly reduce haze pollution by promoting technological innovation and optimizing resource allocation.

Abstract:The digital economy has great potential to boost innovation and social productivity, and it plays an important role in helping to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutrality. This study focuses on analyzing and testing the role of the digital economy in promoting carbon reduction in Chinese cities. Based on panel data of 282 cities in China from 2011 to 2019, this study measured the development level of the digital economy and carbon emission intensity by constructing a digital economy development level evaluation index system and a carbon emission inversion model, respectively. It was found that the digital economy can significantly reduce urban carbon emissions by promoting industrial structure upgrading and green innovation, and the digital economy will have a more obvious promotion effect on urban carbon emission reduction over time. This conclusion was found to be valid after we performed robustness tests such as the instrumental variable method, quasi-experimental analysis, and placebo test. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis showed that eastern, regenerative, and provincial capital cities are better able to promote carbon emission reduction under the development of the digital economy. This study provides new empirical evidence at the city level for developing the digital economy to reduce urban carbon emissions and acts as a useful reference for developing countries to realize "smart carbon emission reduction".

Abstract:The present study examines the effects of China's comprehensive big data pilot zone policy on urban ecological resilience. This is achieved through the utilization of a quasi-natural experiment, employing panel data from 217 prefecture-level cities in China spanning the years 2010 to 2021. The research revealed that China's extensive policy on big data pilot zones has a notable and favorable influence on the ecological resilience of urban areas. This impact is both constant and subject to variation across different regions. The aforementioned impact is attained by means of progressions in industrial structure and the introduction of innovative green technologies. Furthermore, the strategy exerts a beneficial impact on the ecological resilience of urban areas in adjacent regions by means of spatial spillover effects.

Abstract:Big data is a pivotal factor in propelling the digital economy forward and emerges as a novel driver in realizing the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. This study focuses on a quasi-natural experiment, namely national big data comprehensive pilot zones (NBD-CPZs), and employs a multi-period difference-in-differences (DID) model to identify the influence of big data on carbon emissions. The findings of this study are as follows. Overall, big data significantly reduces carbon emissions within the pilot zones. Mechanism analysis shows that big data reduces urban carbon emissions by promoting green innovation, optimizing energy structure, mitigating capital mismatch and improving public awareness of environmental protection. Heterogeneity analysis shows that the carbon reduction effect of big data are more pronounced in cities with high levels of digital economy, non-resource-based cities, cities with strong intellectual property rights protection and the Guizhou Province. Spatial effect analysis indicates that within a radius of 400–500 km, the NBD-CPZ increases urban carbon emissions, signifying a significant siphoning effect; within a radius of 500–900 km, the NBD-CPZ reduces urban carbon emissions, signifying a significant spillover effect, and beyond a distance of 900 km, the spatial effect of the NBD-CPZ is not significant. Based on the above conclusions, this study puts forward several policy recommendations to effectively exert the carbon emission reduction effect of big data.

Abstract:Digital economy takes data as its core input element and has high green value, but does the development of digital economy necessarily promote sustainable development? We use 286 Chinese cities from 2011 to 2019 as a case study to examine the impact of digital economy on urban sustainable development, and discuss the mechanisms of digital economy on urban sustainable development, heterogeneous impacts, threshold effects of environmental regulations, and the role of National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone. It was found that: (1) The digital economy has green value and can effectively contribute to urban sustainable development. (2) The digital economy can achieve urban sustainable development by enhancing green technological innovation and human capital. (3) Environmental regulation has a threshold effect in the digital economy driving urban sustainable development. (4) The establishment of National Big Data Comprehensive Pilot Zone can promote urban sustainable development. (5) The polarization effect of the level of urban sustainable development in first‐tier and second‐tier cities is still increasing under the background of digital economy, which intensifies the "Matthew effect" among different levels of cities, and the inclusiveness of digital economy has not really been reflected in China. This study explores the influence and mechanism of digital economy on urban sustainable development in the context of China, which is of great theoretical and practical significance for developing countries to solve Solow productivity paradox and realize urban sustainable development in the new development stage.

Abstract:The digital economy, being a nascent technology, has exerted a substantial sway on how businesses are produced, how governments are run, how people live, etc. Considering this, additional investigation is required to gain a deeper comprehension of the connection between digital economic expansion and the impact of pollutant reduction, as well as the impact mechanism at play. Accordingly, using panel data from city-level data in China spanning the years 2011–2019 for analysis, this research explores the effects and mechanisms of digital economic growth on urban industrial pollution emission reduction. A two-way fixed effects model is applied. The outcomes demonstrate that a particular inflection point value determines how much the digital economy may reduce urban industrial pollutant emissions. Specifically, only when the digital economic development index surpasses 10 does it become viable to generate the emission reduction effect. The digital economic promotional influence on the decrease of urban industrial pollution emissions grows as industrial company service levels rise. Moreover, in regions with high market segmentation, in the eastern territories, and areas with strong policy support, the digital economy exhibits a lower inflection point for demonstrating its discharge lessening effects.

Abstract:This study employs panel data from 223 prefecture-level cities in China spanning 2011 to 2020, using fixed effects models, mediation effect models, and dynamic spatial Durbin models to investigate the impact of digital economy (DIGE) growth on urban haze pollution (UHPO). Our findings indicate that the expansion of the DIGE significantly reduces UHPO, thereby underscoring its positive influence on environmental management and revealing a negative correlation with urban environmental degradation. Analysis of mechanisms shows that DIGE alleviates UHPO through enhancements in digital innovation (DIGI) and upgrades in industrial structures. This provides strong evidence of the pathways through which DIGE contributes to environmental improvement and influences policy development and implementation. Additionally, heterogeneity analysis highlights that digital infrastructure's impact on reducing UHPO is more pronounced in cities with higher levels of human capital, financial development, and information infrastructure. This detailed understanding assists in pinpointing the differential effects of DIGE across various urban settings and lays the groundwork for tailored policy interventions. Moreover, the study reveals that the spatial spillover effects (SSEs) of DIGE on UHPO delineate an inverted U-shaped pattern, peaking in absolute value between 1,000 and 1,500 kilometers.
