Abstract:Increasing evidence indicates that major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with cognitive as well as mood disturbances. To evaluate cognitive function and white matter structure, resting-state brain function in first-episode, treatmentnaive patients with MDD. To explore brain structure and function mechanisms of cognitive impairment in MDD. 46 Han Chinese MDD patients aged 18–45 year and 46 controls were assessed by a series of validated test procedures.Then, 30 patients and 30 controls were obtained by MRI scan.White matter abnormalities evaluated using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) were analyzed using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) and resting-state brain function was evaluated using regional homogeneity (ReHo) analysis. Cognitive impairment in patients with MDD was demonstrated by reduced accuracy in the Wisconsin Card Sorting test (WSCT) and to a lesser extent the Continuous Performance test (CPT) and Trail Making tests (TMT). White matter abnormalities found in the left cerebellum, and resting-state abnormalities present in the left inferior parietal gyrus, left anterior cingulate nucleus and left hippocampal gyrus were associated with impaired performance in the WSCT and CPT tests. We also showed that poor WSCT performance was associated with increased interconnectivity between the left ventral anterior cingulate nucleus and the medial frontal lobe areas. The present study indicates cognitive disturbances in patients with MDD are associated with white matter and resting-state changes and altered interconnections in specific brain areas.
Regional structural-functional connectivity coupling in major depressive disorder is associated with neurotransmitter and genetic profiles

Abstract:Background: Abnormalities in structural-functional connectivity (SC-FC) coupling have been identified globally in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, investigations have neglected the variability and hierarchical distribution of these abnormalities across different brain regions. Furthermore, the biological mechanisms underlying regional SC-FC coupling patterns are not well understood. Methods: We enrolled 182 patients with MDD and 157 healthy control (HC) subjects, quantifying the intergroup differences in regional SC-FC coupling. The extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), support vector machines (SVM) and random forest (RF) models were constructed to assess the potential of SC-FC coupling as biomarkers for MDD diagnosis and symptom prediction. Then, we examined the link between changes in regional SC-FC coupling in patients with MDD, neurotransmitter distributions, and gene expression. Results: We observed increased regional SC-FC coupling in default mode network (T = 3.233) and decreased coupling in frontoparietal network (T = -3.471) in MDD relative to HC. XGBoost (AUC = 0.853), SVM (AUC = 0.832) and RF (p < 0.05) models exhibited good prediction performance. The alterations in regional SC-FC coupling in patients with MDD were correlated with the distributions of four neurotransmitters (p < 0.05) and expression maps of specific genes. These genes were strongly enriched in genes implicated in excitatory neurons, inhibitory neurons, cellular metabolism, synapse function, and immune signaling. These findings were replicated on two brain atlases. Conclusions: This work enhances our understanding of MDD and pave the way for the development of additional targeted therapeutic interventions.
Connectome Analysis of Functional and Structural Hemispheric Brain Networks in Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract:Neuroimaging studies have shown topological disruptions of both functional and structural whole-brain networks in major depressive disorder (MDD). This study examined common and specific alterations between these two types of networks and whether the alterations were differentially involved in the two hemispheres. Multimodal MRI data were collected from 35 MDD patients and 35 healthy controls, whose functional and structural hemispheric networks were constructed, characterized, and compared. We found that functional brain networks were profoundly altered at multiple levels, while structural brain networks were largely intact in patients with MDD. Specifically, the functional alterations included decreases in intra-hemispheric (left and right) and inter-hemispheric (heterotopic) functional connectivity; decreases in local, global and normalized global efficiency for both hemispheric networks; increases in normalized local efficiency for the left hemispheric networks; and decreases in intra-hemispheric integration and inter-hemispheric communication in the dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus and hippocampus. Regarding hemispheric asymmetry, largely similar patterns were observed between the functional and structural networks: the right hemisphere was over-connected and more efficient than the left hemisphere globally; the occipital and partial regions exhibited leftward asymmetry, and the frontal and temporal sites showed rightward lateralization with regard to regional connectivity profiles locally. Finally, the functional–structural coupling of intra-hemispheric connections was significantly decreased and correlated with the disease severity in the patients. Overall, this study demonstrates modality- and hemisphere-dependent and invariant network alterations in MDD, which are helpful for understanding elaborate and characteristic patterns of integrative dysfunction in this disease.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Impaired sustained attention seems to be a core feature of depression while the anatomical alteration of brain was widely reported in depression patients. The authors aimed to identify the relationship between anatomical brain changes and sustained attention deficits in unmedicated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS:A total of 51 medication-free MDD patients and 51 matched healthy controls (HC) underwent high-resolution structural magnetic resonance imaging scanning, and optimized voxel-based morphometry method was performed to analyze the changes of gray matter volume (GMV). We employed a computerized neurocognitive task from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Tests Automated Battery (CANTAB)--Rapid Visual Information Processing (RVP) task--as a measurement of sustained attention. Based on clinical symptoms, 40 patients who had completed CANTAB-RVP test were divided into MDDa (mild depression patients) and MDDb (severe depression patients) groups. Then the relationships among sustained attention, GMV of different regions and clinical symptoms were explored separately. RESULTS:MDD patients showed significant GMV increase in left posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) (p<0.001, uncorrected), and significant GMV decrease in medial/superior frontal gyrus (MFG/SFG) and lingual gyrus (p<0.001, uncorrected). Structure-cognition correlation analyses revealed that in MDD patients, GMV alterations of the IFG were significantly correlated with sustained attention as measured by the CANTAB-RVP. CONCLUSIONS:Increased GMV values of IFG were associated with sustained attention which may underlie the pathophysiology of MDD or be part of the cognition circuit. In the severe depression patients, sustained attention deficits were positively correlated with clinical symptoms.

Abstract:Background Previous neuroimaging studies have reported structural and functional brain abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aimed to explore whether the coherence of structural-functional networks was affected by disease and investigate its correlation with clinical manifestations. Methods The severity of symptoms and cognitive function of 121 MDD patients and 139 healthy controls (HC) were assessed, and imaging data, including diffusion tensor imaging , T1 structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and resting-state functional MRI, were collected. Spearman correlation coefficients of Kullback–Leibler similarity (KLS), fiber number (FN), fractional anisotropy (FA) and functional connectivity (FC) were calculated as coupling coefficients. Double-weight median correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the correlations between differences in brain networks and clinical assessments. Results The percentage of total correct response of delayed matching to sample and the percentage of delayed correct response of pattern recognition memory was lower in MDD. Compared with the HC, KLS-FC coupling between the parietal lobe and subcortical area, FA-FC coupling between the temporal and parietal lobe, and FN-FC coupling in the frontal lobe was lower in MDD. Several correlations between structural-functional connectivity and clinical manifestations were identified. Limitations First, our study lacks longitudinal follow-up data. Second, the sample size was relatively small. Moreover, we only used the Anatomical Automatic Labeling template to construct the brain network. Finally, the validation of the causal relationship of neuroimaging-behavior factors was still insufficient. Conclusions The alternation in structural-functional coupling were related to clinical characterization and might be involved in the neuropathology of depression.

Abstract:Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common disease with both affective and cognitive disorders. Alterations in metabolic systems of MDD patients have been reported, but the underlying mechanisms still remains unclear. We sought to identify abnormal metabolites in MDD by metabolomics and to explore the association between differential metabolites and neurocognitive dysfunction. Plasma samples from 53 MDD patients and 83 sex-, gender-, BMI-matched healthy controls (HCs) were collected. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) system was then used to detect metabolites in those samples. Two different algorithms were applied to identify differential metabolites in 2 groups. Of the 136 participants, 35 MDD patients and 48 HCs had completed spatial working memory test. Spearman rank correlation coefficient was applied to explore the relationship between differential metabolites and working memory in these 2 groups. The top 5 metabolites which were found in sparse partial least squares-discriminant analysis (sPLS-DA) model and random forest (RF) model were the same, and significant difference was found in 3 metabolites between MDD and HCs, namely, gamma-glutamyl leucine, leucine-enkephalin, and valeric acid. In addition, MDD patients had higher scores in spatial working memory (SWM) between errors and total errors than HCs. Valeric acid was positively correlated with working memory in MDD group. Gamma-glutamyl leucine, leucine-enkephalin, and valeric acid were preliminarily proven to be decreased in MDD patients. In addition, MDD patients performed worse in working memory than HCs. Dysfunction in working memory of MDD individuals was associated with valeric acid.
Aberrant Inter-hemispheric Connectivity in Patients With Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder: A Multimodal MRI Study

Abstract:Objective Inter-hemispheric network dysconnectivity has been well-documented in patients with recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD). However, it has remained unclear how structural networks between bilateral hemispheres relate to inter-hemispheric functional dysconnectivity and depression severity in MDD. Our study attempted to investigate the alterations in corpus callosum macrostructural and microstructural as well as inter-hemispheric homotopic functional connectivity (FC) in patients with recurrent MDD and to determine how these alterations are related with depressive severity. Materials and Methods Resting-state functional MRI (fMRI), T1WI anatomical images and diffusion tensor MRI of the whole brain were performed in 140 MDD patients and 44 normal controls matched for age, sex, years of education. We analyzed the macrostructural and microstructural integrity as well as voxel-mirrored homotopic functional connectivity (VMHC) of corpus callosum (CC) and its five subregion. Two-sample t -test was used to investigate the differences between the two groups. Significant subregional metrics were correlated with depression severity by spearman's correlation analysis, respectively. Results Compared with control subjects, MDD patients had significantly attenuated inter-hemispheric homotopic FC in the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex, and impaired anterior CC microstructural integrity (each comparison had a corrected P < 0.05), whereas CC macrostructural measurements remained stable. In addition, disruption of anterior CC microstructural integrity correlated with a reduction in FC in the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex, which correlated with depression severity in MDD patients. Furthermore, disruption of anterior CC integrity exerted an indirect influence on depression severity in MDD patients through an impairment of inter-hemispheric homotopic FC. Conclusion These findings may help to advance our understanding of the neurobiological basis of depression by identifying region-specific interhemispheric dysconnectivity.

Multiple cognition associated multimodal brain networks in major depressive disorder

Abstract:Major depressive disorder frequently leads to cognitive impairments, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits remain unclear. This study aimed to explore multimodal imaging biomarkers associated with cognitive function in major depressive disorder. Five cognitive scores (sustained attention, visual recognition memory, pattern recognition memory, executive function, and working memory) were used as references to guide the fusion of gray matter volume and amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation. Social function was assessed after 2 yr. Linear regression analysis was performed to identify brain features that were associated with social function of patients with major depressive disorder. Finally, we included 131 major depressive disorder and 145 healthy controls. A multimodal frontal-insula-occipital network associated with sustained attention was found to be associated with social functioning in major depressive disorders. Analysis across different cognitive domains revealed that gray matter volume exhibited greater sensitivity to differences, while amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation consistently decreased in the right temporal-occipital-hippocampus circuit. The consistent functional changes across the 5 cognitive domains were related to symptom severity. Overall, these findings provide insights into biomarkers associated with multiple cognitive domains in major depressive disorder. These results may contribute to the development of effective treatment targeting cognitive deficits and social function.
Common And Distinct Alterations Of Cognitive Function And Brain Structure In Schizophrenia And Major Depressive Disorder: A Pilot Study

Abstract:Objective: Numerous studies indicate that schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD) share pathophysiological characteristics. Investigating the neurobiological features of psychiatric-affective disorders may facilitate the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders. Hence, we aimed to explore whether patients with SCZ and patients with MDD had the similar or distinct cognitive impairments and GMV alterations to further understand their underlying pathophysiological mechanisms.Methods: We recruited a total of 52 MDD patients, 64 SCZ patients, and 65 healthy controls (HCs). The Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) Consensus Cognitive Battery was used to assess cognitive functions. In addition, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) analysis was used to evaluate the gray matter volume (GMV) by using MRI scanning. One-way ANOVA and post-hoc tests were used to find the differences among the MDD, SCZ, and HCs. Finally, we explored the correlation between structural alterations and cognitive functions.Results: Compared with that of HCs, processing speed was impaired in both patients with SCZ and patients with MDD (F = 49.505, p < 0.001). SCZ patients displayed impaired cognitive performance in all dimensions of cognitive functions compared with HCs (p < 0.001, except social cognition, p = 0.043, Bonferroni corrected). Whole-brain VBM analysis showed that both SCZ and MDD groups had reductions of GMV in the medial superior frontal cortex (cluster-level FWE p < 0.05). Patients with SCZ exhibited declining GMV in the anterior cingulate cortex and right middle frontal cortex (MFC) compared with HCs and MDD patients (cluster-level FWE p < 0.05). The mean values of GMV in the right MFC had a positive correlation with the attention/vigilance function in patients with MDD (p = 0.014, partial. r = 0.349, without Bonferroni correction).Conclusions: In total, our study found that MDD and SCZ groups had common cognitive impairments and brain structural alterations, but the SCZ group exhibited more severe impairment than the MDD group in both fields. The above findings may provide a potential support for recognizing the convergent and divergent brain neural pathophysiological mechanisms between MDD and SCZ.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate differences of cAMP-PDE activity in human salivary glands, between a control group and some different benign tumours groups and, where present, with 2 malignant tumors groups. The value of the enzymatic activity in the groups analysed was 50% lower than control samples. The differences between the control group (82 ± 7.9 nmols/mg of protein) and the 3 pathologic groups (Benign A: 44 ± 6.2; Malignant A: 40 ± 16; Benign B: 40 ± 14.2; Malign A: 9.1; Benign C: 22 nmols/mg of protein) are statistically significant.
Decreased Cortical Folding of the Fusiform Gyrus and Its Hypoconnectivity with Sensorimotor Areas in Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract:Background: : Neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormal cortical folding pattern and disruptive functional connectivity in major depressive disorder (MDD). Combining structure and function in the same population may further our understanding of the neuropathological mechanisms of MDD. Method:: Sixty-two patients with MDD and 61 healthy controls (HCs) underwent structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Group differences in the cortical folding (measured by local gyrification index (LGI)) were analyzed in FreeSurfer. Taking the brain regions with significant group differences in LGI as seed regions, the resting-state functional connectivity analysis was further conducted to explore the corresponding functional connectivity alterations. Results: : Comparing with HCs, patients with MDD showed significantly decreased LGI in the right fusiform gyms (cohen's d = 0.70). In the seed-based functional connectivity analysis, we found that compared with HCs, patients with MDD showed decreased functional connections between the right fusiform gyrus with sensorimotor areas (precentral and postcentral gyrus) (cohen's d = 1.32) and right superior temporal gyrus (cohen's d = 0.94). Limitations:: Main limitations are the relatively small sample size and the cross-sectional study design. Conclusion: : Decreased LGI in the right fusiform gyrus, as well as decreased functional connectivity between the right fusiform gyrus and the sensorimotor area and right superior temporal gyms, appears to play a role in the pathophysiology of MDD.
Correlations Between Working Memory Impairment and Neurometabolites of Prefrontal Cortex and Lenticular Nucleus in Patients with Major Depressive Disorder

Abstract:Background: The mechanism of working memory (WM) impairment in MDD remains unclear. We aimed to find out the mechanism by using neuropsychological tests and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Methods: 31 MDD patients and 31 healthy controls were recruited in our study. The WM performance and neurometabolite ratios of prefrontal cortex (PFC) and lenticular nucleus (LN) between two groups were evaluated and compared. And the correlations between abnormal neurometabolite ratios and WM dysfunction were computed. Results: Scores of SDMT, DST(forwards), VRS and 2-back Task(accuracy rate) in MDD were lower than HCs. NAA/Cr ratios of bilateral PFC in MDD were significantly lower than HCs, while no significant differences showed in NAA/Cr ratios of LN and Cho/Cr, mI/Cr values of the bilateral PFC and LN between two groups. And for MDD patients, NAA/Cr ratios in the right PFC were positively correlated with scores of DST (Forwards). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that depressed patients may have impairments in working memory, including phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, episodic buffer and central executive. And the impairment of verbal WM and WM capacity may be associated with the abnormal neurometabolites in the right PFC.

Abstract:Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disease involving sensory and higher-order cognitive dysfunction. Previous work has shown altered asymmetry in MDD, including abnormal lateralized activation and disrupted hemispheric connectivity. However, it remains unclear whether and how MDD affects functional asymmetries in the context of intrinsic hierarchical organization. Methods: Here, we evaluate intra- and inter-hemispheric asymmetries of the first three functional gradients, characterizing unimodal-transmodal, visual-somatosensory, and somatomotor/default mode-multiple demand hierarchies, to study MDD-related alterations in overarching system-level architecture. Results: We find that, relative to the healthy controls, MDD patients exhibit alterations in both primary sensory regions (e.g., visual areas) and transmodal association regions (e.g., default mode areas). We further find these abnormalities are woven in heterogeneous alterations along multiple functional gradients, associated with cognitive terms involving mind, memory, and visual processing. Moreover, through an elastic net model, we observe that both intra- and inter-asymmetric features are predictive of depressive traits measured by BDI-II scores. Discussion: Altogether, these findings highlight a broad and mixed effect of MDD on functional gradient asymmetry, contributing to a richer understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings in MDD.

Abstract:Although imbalanced functional integration has been increasingly reported in major depressive disorder (MDD), there still lacks a general framework to characterize common characteristic and origin shared by the integrative disturbances. Here we examined spatial selectivity, temporal uniqueness, metabolic basis, and therapeutic response of altered functional connectivity (FC) in MDD by analyzing both cross-sectional and longitudinal multimodal functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 35 patients and 34 demographically matched healthy controls. First, based on a voxel-wise, data-driven, graph-based degree centrality approach, the bilateral anterior cingulate gyri, middle frontal gyri and superior frontal gyri, and the right parahippocampal gyrus were robustly identified to show decreased FC in MDD. Further spatiotemporal analyses revealed that these regions exhibited hub-like features and were selectively located in limbic and default mode networks spatially and, relative to other areas in the brain, exhibited unique, frequency-dependent oscillation power (stronger within 0.01-0.027 Hz and weaker within 0.027-0.073 Hz) and less dynamical variability of whole-brain FC profiles temporally. Moreover, a cross-modality fusion analysis showed that all MDD-related FC impairments were associated with reduced cerebral blood flow (CBF); however, there existed multiple regions that showed reduced CBF but had intact FC in the patients, which resulted in a decreased FC-CBF coupling and implied an earlier emergence of reduced CBF than impaired FC in MDD. Finally, the disrupted FC in MDD gradually recovered over the course of drug treatment (2 and 12 weeks). Altogether, these findings could help establish a general framework to provide mechanistic insights into integrative dysfunctions in MDD.

Abstract:Background Abnormalities of functional connectivity (FC) in certain brain regions are closely related to the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). Findings are inconsistent with different presuppositions in regions of interest. Our research focused on voxel-wise brain-wide FC changes in patients with MDD in an unbiased manner. Method We examined resting-state functional MRI in 23 patients with MDD and 26 healthy controls. Imaging data were analyzed by using global-brain FC (GFC) and used to explore the correlation of abnormal GFC values with clinical variables. Results Increased GFC values in the left medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed) and decreased GFC values in the right supplementary motor area (SMA) were observed in the patients with MDD compared with the controls. The decreased GFC values in the right SMA had a positive correlation with vitamin D and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) scores. Conclusion Abnormal GFC in the hate circuit, particularly increased GFC in the left SFGmed and decreased GFC in the right SMA, appears to be a new sight for comprehending the pathological alterations in MDD.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) is a reliable technique to quantify regional neural glucose metabolism even with major depressive disorder (MDD) heterogeneous features. Previous study proposed that in the resting-state (RS), pairs of brain regions whose regional glucose metabolic rates were significantly correlated were functionally associated. This synchronicity indicates a neuronal metabolic and functional interaction in high energy efficient brain regions. In this study, a multimode method was used to identify the RS-FC patterns based on regional metabolism changes, and to observe its relationship with the severity of depressive symptoms in MDD patients.METHODS:The study enrolled 11 medication-naive MDD patients and 14 healthy subjects. All participants received a static 18F-FDG PET brain scan and a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI) scan. SPM5 software was used to compare brain metabolism in MDD patients with that in healthy controls, and designated regions with a change in metabolism as regions of interest (ROIs). The glucose metabolism-based regional RS-FC Z values were compared between groups. Then group independent component analysis (ICA) was used to identify the abnormal connectivity nodes in the intrinsic function networks. Finally, the correlation between abnormal RS-FC Z values and the severity of depressive symptoms was evaluated.RESULTS:Patients with MDD had reduced glucose metabolism in the putamen, claustrum, insular, inferior frontal gyrus, and supramarginal gyrus. The metabolic reduction regions impaired functional connectivity (FC) to key hubs, such as the Inferior frontal gyrus (pars triangular), angular gyrus, calcarine sulcus, middle frontal gyrus (MFG), located in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)/parietal lobe, salience network (SN), primary visual cortex (V1), and language network respectively. There was no correlation between aberrant connectivity and the severity of clinical symptoms.CONCLUSIONS:This research puts forward a possibility that focal neural activity alteration may share RS-FC dysfunction and be susceptible to hubs in the functional network in MDD. In particular, the metabolism and function proﬁles of the Inferior frontal gyrus (pars triangularis) should be emphasized in future MDD studies.
Interhemispheric Functional Connectivity and Its Relationships with Clinical Characteristics in Major Depressive Disorder: A Resting State Fmri Study

Abstract:Background Abnormalities in large-scale, structural and functional brain connectivity have been increasingly reported in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, MDD-related alterations in functional interaction between the cerebral hemispheres are still not well understood. Resting state fMRI, which reveals spontaneous neural fluctuations in blood oxygen level dependent signals, provides a means to detect interhemispheric functional coherence. We examined the resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) between the two hemispheres and its relationships with clinical characteristics in MDD patients using a recently proposed measurement named "voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC)". Methodology/Principal Findings We compared the interhemispheric RSFC, computed using the VMHC approach, of seventeen first-episode drug-naive patients with MDD and seventeen healthy controls. Compared to the controls, MDD patients showed significant VMHC decreases in the medial orbitofrontal gyrus, parahippocampal gyrus, fusiform gyrus, and occipital regions including the middle occipital gyrus and cuneus. In MDD patients, a negative correlation was found between VMHC of the fusiform gyrus and illness duration. Moreover, there were several regions whose VMHC showed significant negative correlations with the severity of cognitive disturbance, including the prefrontal regions, such as middle and inferior frontal gyri, and two regions in the cereballar crus. Conclusions/Significance These findings suggest that the functional coordination between homotopic brain regions is impaired in MDD patients, thereby providing new evidence supporting the interhemispheric connectivity deficits of MDD. The significant correlations between the VMHC and clinical characteristics in MDD patients suggest potential clinical implication of VMHC measures for MDD. Interhemispheric RSFC may serve as a useful screening method for evaluating MDD where neural connectivity is implicated in the pathophysiology.

Abstract:AIM To evaluate the patency of coronary artery bypass grafts with a 2D T2-weighted breath-hold turbo-spin-echo sequence. METHODS 38 patients with 97 grafts (19 internal mammary artery and 78 saphenous vein grafts) and a total of 120 distal anastomoses were studied at 1.5 Tesla in supine position using a phased array body coil. An ECG gated 2D T2-weighted breath-hold turbo-spin-echo sequence (HASTE) was performed. Reference method was selective coronary angiography. The image material was evaluated independently by two radiologists (observer one, a radiological fellow and the second a staff radiologist). RESULTS Observer 1 reached a sensitivity of 96% (72/75) and a specificity of 91% (20/22), positive predictive value was 97%, negative predictive value 87%. 79 of the 97 (81%) patent distal anastomoses were correctly identified. Observer 2 achieved a sensitivity of 92% (69/75) and a specificity of 82% (18/22), positive and negative predictive values were 95% and 75% respectively. From 97 patent distal anastomoses 59 (61%) were recognized. The interobserver agreement was good (Cohen's kappa = 68%, p-value [McNemar] = 58%). CONCLUSION Using the HASTE sequence a reliable assessment of graft patency is possible. This sequence is a helpful tool for planning flow measurements and 3D MR angiography.
