Abstract:Background: Long waiting time in outpatient clinics is a constant challenge for patients and the health care providers. Prolonged waiting times are associated with poor adherence to treatment, missed appointment and failure or delay in initiation of treatment and is a major factor towards the perception of the patient towards the care received. Objective: To determine the waiting time and associated factors among out patients attending staff clinic at University of Nairobi health services. Method: A cross-sectional study design was used and data collected from 384 ambulatory patients over a period of four weeks using an interviewer administered pretested structured exit questionnaire with a time-tracking section. Simple random sampling was used to select respondents in a walk- in outpatient clinic set up. Data was cleaned and analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 20. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), and cross tabulation was used to establish associations between the independent variable and dependent variables. Results: In total 384 patients were tracked and interviewed. The average patient waiting time was 55.3mins.Most respondents (52%) suggested that improving availability of staff at their stations would help to reduce patient waiting time. In this study, gender (P=0.005) and availability of doctors (p=0.000) were found to affect patient waiting time with women waiting longer than the male patients. Conclusion: Majority of the patients spent about an hour at the facility to be served. Inadequate number of health workers was the main cause of long waiting time.
Analysis of Factors Delaying on Waiting Time for Medical Examination of Outpatient on a Hospital

Abstract:Background : To shorten processing time for variety of medical affairs of the patient at the outpatient clinic of a big hospital is very important to qualify medical care of the patient. Therefore, patient's waiting time for medical examination is often utilized as a strong tool to evaluate patient satisfaction with a medical care provided. We performed this study to investigate factors delaying related with waiting time for medical examination. Methods : The data were collected from June 26 to July 30, 1999. A total 275 case of medical treatment and 5,634 patients who visited outpatient clinics of a tertiary hospital were subjected to evaluate the waiting time. The data were analyzed using frequency, t-test, ANOVA, -test by SPSS Windows 7.5 program. Results : The mean patient's waiting time objectively evaluated ( min) was longer than that subjectively by patient evaluated ( min). Patient waiting time objectively evaluated was influenced by the starting time of medical examination, consultation hours, patients arriving time etc, as expected. The time discrepancy between two evaluations was influenced by several causative factors. Regarding the degree of patients accepted waiting time with the medical examination is 20 min. Conclusion : The results show that, besides the starting time of medical examination, consultation hours and patients arriving time, influence the patient's subjective evaluation of waiting time for medical examination and his satisfaction related with the service in the big hospital. In order to improve patient satisfaction related with waiting time for medical examination, it will be effective examination rather than to shorten the real processing time within the consultation room.

Abstract:Background: Patients' satisfaction is defined as a subjective evaluation of the service received against the individual’s expectations. Patients' satisfaction should be measured frequently as it is the important indicator of quality in health care and also because there is still room for improvement in quality of health care. Objective: The aim of this research is to determine patients’ satisfaction in reference to doctor’s behavior and environment of the out-patient department at the tertiary care teaching hospital. Materials and Methods: Study was carried out in OPD of Sheikh Zayed Hospital using a pretested questionnaire with 320 samples from January 2022 to March 2022, selected by systemic random sampling technique. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 21.00. Data was presented using figure and tables and described using frequencies and percentages. Result: Patients expressing satisfaction were 68.4% while remaining 31.5% were dissatisfied with their OPD experience. Overall behavior of doctor towards patients was satisfying while the environmental structure of OPD showed some flaws. Mean consultation time given by doctor was found to be 5.78±4.28 minutes. And 53.1% of the patients waited for more than 45 minutes. Conclusion: The findings of this survey must be used to bring improvement. Loopholes found in environmental structure should be addressed timely. Satisfaction level can further be improved and brought to the level of developed countries.

Abstract:Abstract: Background: The success and survival of any healthcare organization depends on the patient’s satisfaction and quality. Patient satisfaction plays a vital role in the performance of care. Objective: To identify the factors influencing patient satisfaction with outpatient quality services in public and private hospitals. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted on outpatient patients from different public and private hospital settings in Karachi, Pakistan. Data was collected through virtual tools such as Google Docs, asking about their experience of outdoor patients (OPD) in public or private hospitals. Using a non-probability, convenience sampling technique, a 5% margin of error and a confidence interval of 95%, the sample size was calculated as 377 participants rounded off to 400. Respondents were divided into males and females who visited any specialty department or general OPD. A self-administered questionnaire was designed to gather data, and a digital tool such as Google Docs was used to reach a wider audience. The reliability of the pre-validated tools has been assessed through Cronbach’s alpha. The Cronbach alpha for outpatient quality services is 0.717, and patients’ satisfaction is 0.98. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 25V by IBM Corporation. Result: Most respondents were from the age group (26-35 years), making up 42% of the entire population. Data gathered showed private hospitals preference over public hospitals and satisfaction as well. All the quality service variables identified in the study had a direct relationship with patient satisfaction except waiting time, which had a negative relationship. Regression Analysis showed a positive impact on the availability of services; thus 1% increase in service will lead to a 0.484% change in patient satisfaction. A negative relationship was also witnessed with a 1% increase in waiting time patient satisfaction is down by 0.119%. Conclusion: The level of satisfaction in public hospitals was not quite adequate, and the services were correspondingly rated as exceptional. The findings suggest that focusing on the nature of physician-related services, waiting for test results, and waiting for appointments are the most important factors impacting patient satisfaction in the outpatient division.

Abstract:An important parameter in the assessment of quality health care lies on patient satisfaction. Despite concerted efforts to improve health-care services, patient satisfaction coupled with the quality of hospital care at disposal remain a significant challenge in Nigeria. The purpose of the study was to determine the perception on factors associated with prolonged waiting time and patient satisfaction at the outpatient department of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital in Nigeria. A mixed-method research was utilized. Questionnaire was administered on 95 outpatients, and a focus group discussion (FGD) was held with eight participants. Statistical analysis was utilized to determine the association between dependent and independent variables. Data from FGD were analyzed with NVivo 10. The overall hospital satisfaction was found to be 75.8% among the study population. There was a significant inverse relationship between the level of satisfaction with the doctor and employment status and educational level and a significant direct relationship between the level of satisfaction with the doctor and appointment status and type of visits. The results of FGD show that patients were satisfied with the neatness of the hospital, doctor’s professionalism, and patient–doctor relationship. Dissatisfaction was with extended patient waiting time and the small size infrastructure of the hospital, inefficient handling of patient files by nurse aids, and thoroughness of the physicians. The results showed that majority of the patients were dissatisfied with the waiting time for consultation in the hospital. In other words, consultation time positively correlated with the level of patient satisfaction. To improve the overall patient satisfaction, the waiting time for consultation should be reduced significantly.

Abstract:The issue of waiting time has received little attention in the delivery of healthcare services in Sierra Leone. The time spent waiting in the hospital has been considered a major indicator in measuring healthcare quality and patient satisfaction with services. However, long waiting time have constituted a substantial impediment to maximizing healthcare quality. This quantitative study employed data collected from 347 patients in an outpatient department using an online survey. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Correlation and regression analyzes were conducted to test the relationship and impact among the variables. The findings revealed an overall dissatisfaction with the waiting time to see a doctor, the behavior and professional competency of medical staff, and the service delivery. Furthermore, significant values were obtained for the correlation and effect between the constructs (p<0.05). Therefore, it is recommended that training on effective communication skills should be provided to address perceptions of ill behaviors from hospital staff and aid better working relationships among caregivers, patients and families. The government and hospital administrators should also introduce an online appointment booking system to minimize waiting time.

Abstract:Background: Pakistani's health services delivery system has been rarely evaluated regarding patient satisfaction. This study examined the performance of the Pakistani health system from the perspective of doctor services (DS), digital payment system (DPS), nurses' services (NS), laboratory services (LS), pharmacy services (PHS), registration services (RS), physical services (environmentally and tangible) and doctor-patient communication (DPC) about patient satisfaction. A random sampling technique was adopted for data collection. Methodology: The Social Science Statistical Package (SPSS), analysis of moment structures (AMOS), and structural equation modeling were used to analyze the data for reliability, validity, correlations, and descriptive findings. The 879 responses were used for study analysis. Results: The study revealed that patient satisfaction was found to be significantly affected positively by LS, PHS, DS, NS, and DPS, while DPC, RS, and PF were impacted non-significantly. Consequently, there is a considerable communication gap in the doctor-patient interaction, and Pakistan's healthcare system is confronted with a shortage of physical infrastructure and challenges in the digital system. Conclusion: Furthermore, the insufficient emphasis on registration services necessitates immediate action to improve the entire patient experience and satisfaction. Identifying these shortcomings has the potential to result in a healthcare system that is more efficient and focused on the needs of the patients.

Abstract:Long wait times and crowding are major issues affecting outpatient service delivery, but it is unclear how these affect patients in dual practice settings. This study aims to evaluate the effects of changing consultation start time and patient arrival on wait times and crowding in an outpatient clinic with a dual practice system. A discrete event simulation (DES) model was developed based on real-world data from an Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) clinic in a public hospital. Data on patient flow, resource availability, and time taken for registration and clinic processes for public and private patients were sourced from stakeholder discussion and time-motion study (TMS), while arrival times were sourced from the hospital’s information system database. Probability distributions were used to fit these input data in the model. Scenario analyses involved configurations on consultation start time/staggered patient arrival. The median registration and clinic turnaround times (TT) were significantly different between public and private patients (p < 0.01). Public patients have longer wait times than private patients in this study’s dual practice setting. Scenario analyses showed that early consultation start time that matches patient arrival time and staggered arrival could reduce the overall TT for public and private patients by 40% and 21%, respectively. Similarly, the number of patients waiting at the clinic per hour could be reduced by 10–21% during clinic peak hours. Matching consultation start time with staggered patient arrival can potentially reduce wait times and crowding, especially for public patients, without incurring additional resource needs and help narrow the wait time gap between public and private patients. Healthcare managers and policymakers can consider simulation approaches for the monitoring and improvement of healthcare operational efficiency to meet rising healthcare demand and costs.

Abstract:Patient satisfaction is a measure of the extent to which a patient is content with the health care they received from their health care provider. Patient satisfaction is one of the most important factors to determine the success of a health care facility. The purpose of this study was to determine patient satisfaction with healthcare services and encompass the physician's behavior as moderation between patient satisfaction and healthcare services. The study seeks to measure the health care services, like a laboratory and diagnostic care, preventive healthcare and prenatal care, to patient satisfaction in the public health sectors of Pakistan. A descriptive survey research design was used for this study. The target population was patients from the out-patient department (OPD) of three public hospitals from Pakistan. By using the convenient sampling technique, 290 sample participants were selected from the target population. The reliability scales were tallied by using Cronbach's Alpha. The findings of the study are gleaned by using regression to explore patient satisfaction with the health care services, and whether or not the physician's behavior moderates the link of patient satisfaction and healthcare services. SPSS Hayes process was used for the moderation effect of the physician's behavior. The main results of the regression analysis validate that health care services, such as laboratory and diagnostic care, preventive healthcare, and prenatal care, have a significant and positive effect on patient satisfaction. Specifically, the study suggests that the physician's behavior significantly moderates the effect of health care services on the satisfaction of patients. The overall opinions about the satisfaction level of patients for the availability of health services in the hospitals were good. The degree of satisfaction was satisfactory with respect to laboratory and diagnostic care, preventive healthcare, and prenatal care services. Based on the outcomes, the study confirms that the proposed hypotheses are statistically significant. Furthermore, the directions for future research of the study are offered.

Abstract:Background: Satisfaction is an important element in the evaluation of services rendered by a hospital. The out-patient department of a hospital is for patients who do not require hospitalization but have come for their health needs, either for treatment or for diagnosis. Aim and Objectives: To know out of the pocket expenditure, amount of time taken and difficulties faced for an Out Patient Department consultation of patients in a government Tertiary Health Care Centre. It also aimed to assess the satisfaction levels of patients with the services available in a government Tertiary Health Care Centre. Methods: A Single stage, cross sectional epidemiological exit survey was conducted in June 2018 from OPD patients of Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, Hyderabad, Telangana, India. Through pre-structured. 740 patients were enrolled using random sampling from 1480 patients visiting major OPDs. From each of the departments, a single random of the 5% of the per day visit was selected per each day, amounting up to a total of 50% of the per day major OPD patient visits. The data obtained were analysed using SPSS version 20.0. Results: Females comprise about 34 percent whereas males comprise of 66 percent of the total subjects visiting the tertiary health care centre for an OPD visit. Twenty three percent patients completed their OPD visit within 1 hour and 44 percent within 2 hours, 25 percent patients within 3 hours and 8 percent patients completed their OPD visit within 4 hours. 159 people travel a distance 0-5 Kms, 234 people travel a distance of 6-10Kms, 213 people travel a distance of 11-15 Kms and 134 people travel more than 16Kms an OPD visit in a tertiary health care center. 67 percent of the patients visiting the hospital for an OPD visit, investigations were available and 33 percent of the patients visiting the hospital for an OPD visit, investigations were not available. 49% people got prescribed drugs from hospital pharmacy, 51% people did not get the prescribed drugs from hospital pharmacy. 81.6% of the people coming for OPD visits are white ration card holders and 18.4%(128) are pink ration card holders. Out of 740 people coming for OPD visits 41%(305) are very satisfied,47%(350) are satisfied,8%(57) are adequately satisfied,3%(23) are unsatisfied and 1%(7) are very unsatisfied with doctors. The average money spent on travel for an OPD visit in a tertiary health care centre is Rs. 147.84/-. The average money spent on investigations not available in the tertiary health care centre is Rs. 698.88/-. The average money spent on drugs not available in the pharmacy of tertiary health care centre is Rs. 339.09/-. Conclusion: Patient satisfaction was significantly associated with socio-economic status, repeat visits, and waiting time between arrival and consultation. Measures to reduce out of pocket expenditure and waiting time may increase satisfaction levels in patients.

Abstract:Four patients aged 41 to 73 years, who had had rheumatoid arthritis for eight to 25 years, had signs and symptoms of cervical myelopathy and radiculopathy due to either atlantoaxial dislocation with herniation of the odontoid through the foramen magnum, or subluxation of the middle to lower cervical vertebrae. Spastic paraparesis or quadriparesis, severe nuchal immobility and pain, and flaccid paresis of the upper limbs necessitated anterior medullary decompression and posterior cervical fusion. Postmortem examination disclosed old ischemic necrosis, atrophy, and gliosis in the low medulla and cervical cord. Anterior and posterior gray horns and contiguous posterior and lateral funiculi bore the brunt of the damage. Ascending and descending wallerian degeneration and atrophy of the cervical nerve root were evident. In three cases, anterior spinal or radicular arteries demonstrated intimal fibrosis with moderate stenosis; two cases depicted chronic phlebitis or subarachnoid vessels. Previous reports have infrequently provided evidence of a vasculopathy.

Abstract:The issue of long patient waits has attracted increasing public attention due to the negative effects of waiting on patients’ satisfaction with health care. The present study examined the associations between actual waiting time, perceived acceptability of waiting time, actual service time, perceived acceptability of service time, actual visit duration, and the level of patient satisfaction with care. We conducted a cross-sectional time study and questionnaire survey of endocrinology outpatients visiting a major teaching hospital in China. Our results show that actual waiting time was negatively associated with patient satisfaction regarding several aspects of the care they received. Also, patients who were less satisfied with the sociocultural atmosphere and the identity-oriented approach to their care tended to perceive the amounts of time they spent waiting and receiving care as less acceptable. It is not always possible to prevent dissatisfaction with waiting, or to actually reduce waiting times by increasing resources such as increased staffing. However, several improvements in care services can be considered. Our suggestions include providing clearer, more transparent information to keep patients informed about the health care services that they may receive, and the health care professionals who are responsible for those services. We also suggest that care providers are encouraged to continue to show empathy and respect for patients, that patients are provided with private areas where they can talk with health professionals and no one can overhear, and that hospital staff treat the family members or friends who accompany patients in a courteous and friendly way.

Abstract:Background The overall time refers to the amount of time a patient spends in a health care facility, from the time he or she enters to the time he or she leaves. As a result of the imbalance between supply and demand, waiting times occur. Ethiopian hospitals are being reformed to improve the quality of care they provide. The time a patient spends in the hospital is one of the most important indicators of quality of care, as it provides insight into customer satisfaction and provider success. However, the overall time patients spend in hospitals was not studied. Objective The study aimed to assess the overall time spent by clients from entry to exit and associated factors in the outpatient departments of Jimma zone hospitals. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted. Patients from outpatient units at Jimma zone public hospitals participated in the study from March 15 to May 17, 2018. Data were collected using a time and motion tool coupled with an interviewer-administered structured questionnaire on 249 samples. Participants in the study were selected using the consecutive sampling method. Overall time, in terms of waiting and service times at each section unit, and the relationship of socio-demographic and clinical factors with overall time was the main outcome variables. Data were analyzed using descriptive and linear regression analysis. Simple linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the dependent and explanatory variables. Variables were considered significantly associated with the overall time if they had a p-value of less than 0.05 at the 95% confidence interval (CI). Result The overall response rate was 94.8%. Overall, patients spent a median time of 342.5 minutes. Patients spent 12.7% of the total time as service time and 86% of the time waiting for care. The longest overall times were spent in the laboratory (170 minutes), imaging (95 minutes), other diagnostic units (84 minutes) and examination (83 minutes). The average overall time was increased by 52.03 minutes (95%CI 21.65, 82.412), 4.65 minutes (95%CI 3.983, 5.324), and 96.43 minutes (95%CI 52.076, 140.787) when the patient was referred, the number of patients at the queue was increased by one unit, and patients who had other diagnostic tests performed respectively with P <0.005 &adjusted R2 = 0.522. Conclusion and recommendations The majority of patients stayed for a longer period. Most time was spent waiting for services, particularly in the examination, laboratory, and imaging units. This is strongly related to high patient load, an absence of some services, being referred patients, and patients who had other diagnostic tests. To reduce the number of patients in the queues, hospitals should work hand in hand with the Ministry of Health to enforce policies that are understood and adopted by all workers in the lower healthcare facilities. And hospital administrators are working to strengthen the triaging system to screen patients with minor illnesses. This is because most patients with minor illnesses queue with those with more complicated illnesses. Finally, we recommend that researchers conduct further research on service quality.

Abstract:Objective To observe the outpatients waiting time for treatment at Beijing Cancer Hospital.Methods Data was collected from the hospital information system and was analyzed according to gender,age,medical insurance and ranking professional titles of physicians.Results The average waiting time for treatment was 36.3 (10.6,81.5) min.Overall patients needed to wait 54.1 (19.1,106.8) min,34.0 (10.3,74.7) min and 26.4(7.8,66.5) min before treated by a chief doctor,associate chief doctor and attending doctor.The difference was statistically significant (P ＜0.05).34.7％ (3 984/11 471) of the patients waited for doctors for over 1 hour.Out-of-town patients needed to wait 42.5 (12.1,90.4) min,longer than local patients [33.8 (9.8,77.3)min and 30.5 (9.9,68.4)min].Conclusion Waiting time for treatment can be used as an index to evaluate outpatient service;improving flow-sheet of outpatient clinic and registration reservation can shorten the waiting time.

Methods: The cross-sectionalstudy was conducted at the Federal Government Polyclinic Hospital, Islamabad, Pakistan, in July and August, 2020 during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic, and comprised healthcare professionals from the obstetrics and gynaecology department. Data was collected online using the 25-item Oldenburg Burnout Inventory. Data was analysed using SPSS 26. Results: Ofthe 142 individuals approached, 102(71.83%)responded; 55(53.92%) doctors, 43(42.15%) nurses and 4(3.92%) operation theatre technicians. Overall, there were 98(96.1%) females, and 67(65.7%) married subjects. Mean exhaustion scorewas 2.53±0.54 anddisengagementscorewas 2.14±0.57. Burnoutwasfoundin40(39.2%)participants, 83 (81.4%)were exhausted, 44(43.1%)weredisengaged, and4(3.1%)weredisengagedbutnot exhausted. Participants aged>50 yearswere significantly more exhausted and disengaged than the younger ones(p<0.05). Those with work hours >60 per week were significantly more exhausted and disengaged than the rest (p<0.05). Conclusion: Health care professionals inobstetrics and gynaecology teams showed considerably highburnout levels during the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic in Pakistan.
Factors Affecting Length of Stays in the Emergency Department of a Teaching Hospital: A Retrospective Study From Najran, Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Reducing the frequency of emergency department (ED) patient visits for treatment, particularly in urgent instances, is a global healthcare objective. Additionally, a more extended stay in the ED can harm a patient's prognosis during later hospitalization. This study aims to investigate the factors affecting the length of stay in the ED in a teaching hospital. Methods: A retrospective chart review study was done between January 1, 2021, and February 31, 2021, involving 122 adult patients who had delayed ED visits to King Khalid Hospital in Najran, Saudi Arabia. Data on the patient's characteristics, visit time, and the causes for the delay based on the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) were gathered and analyzed. Factors associated with more than six hours of delay were investigated in a univariate analysis. Result: The mean age was 52.3 ±13.5 years, and 42 (34.4%) were more than 65 years of age. More than half of the study population were female (n=66; 54.1%). Most delays occurred among CTAS 4 and 5 cases (47.5%), and 22 (18.0%) occurred during holidays. The mean delay time was 6.1 ±1.8 hours. The leading delay causes were multiple consultations with further investigations (37.7%) and conflict between the teams (36.1%). In univariate analysis, ED visiting at holiday time (OR: 0.14; 95% CI: 0.04-0.40, p <0.001) and CTAS 4 and 5 (OR: 2.22; 95% CI: 0.95-5.30, p = 0.003) significantly had more delay. Factors associated with delay in univariate analysis were multiple consultations with further investigations (OR: 2.82; 95% CI: 1.32-6.26, p = 0.013), various assessments in different ED areas with a late arrival of the specialist (OR: 0.43; 95% CI: 0.20-0.91, p = 0.042), and conflict between the teams (OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.17-5.54, p = 0.031). Conclusion: In this study, multiple assessments in different ED areas and conflict between the teams were the main factors that caused delays in ED. Implementing a timeframe monitoring system for consultations while emphasizing accelerated decision-making and disposition for patients and understanding teamwork collaboration may reduce patients' length of stay in the ED. Implementing these strategies and evaluating their impact on the length of stay in the ED requires further investigation.

Abstract:Abstract: Free clinics may present long wait times. A retrospective chart review was conducted at a free clinic to understand contributing factors. Three wait times (total visit time, lobby wait time, and triage time) were analyzed across 349 patients. Variables included in the models were the total number of patients, providers, and volunteers; interpreter services; social work involvement; medical complexity; new vs. returning patient; scheduled vs. walk-in appointment; transportation provision; medical volunteer training level; and on-site medications and labs. Data analysis with multiple regressions was conducted. Factors that significantly affected wait times included the level of medical complexity (p<.001), medical volunteer training levels (p<.001), in-house labs (p<.001), in-house medications (p=.04), and new patients (p=.01). An intervention involving time benchmarks at the beginning of clinics reduced first-wave lobby wait times (p<.001). Future interventions addressing these factors may reduce wait times at other clinics.

Abstract:Background: Assessing patients' satisfaction is an easy and cost-effective method of evaluating the outpatient services provided by health-care institutions. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to determine patient satisfaction among patients attending various outpatient departments (OPDs) at a tertiary care hospital and the factors affecting their satisfaction. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients attending various OPDs at a tertiary care hospital in Faridabad. Exit face-to-face interviews were conducted for 334 patients above 18 years of age who availed OPD services followed by pharmacy services. Information regarding sociodemography, rating of satisfaction with various attributes of OPD services on a 5-point Likert scale, and reasons for dissatisfaction was collected. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. Root cause analysis for the lowest-scoring attribute was done using fishbone diagram. Results: About 64% of the patients were satisfied with the OPD services. "Attitude and communication of doctors" was the prime contributor to patient satisfaction. "Promptness at medicine distribution counter" was the attribute that scored lowest followed by "waiting time at the registration counter." The mean waiting time for registration was 38.2 min, for consultation with doctor 41.3 min, for collection of samples 49.6 min, and for drug dispensing 61 min. Conclusion: The issues related to pharmacy services need to be promptly acknowledged and addressed.

Abstract:In medical consultations, the length of the visit has a significant impact on the quality of care. It is significantly associated with a better quality of treatment and better health outcomes. In this study, we analyzed doctors' consultation length with patients and associated factors in Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the patients (N = 763) who visited the doctors in six district/upazila (sub-district) hospitals in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) area. Linear regression analyses were performed to identify the determining factors associated with the length of doctors' appointments with patients. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 24.0. Among the patients, 319 (41.8%) were female and 688 (90.2%) lived in rural/suburban areas. This study revealed that the average length of medical consultations was 9.10 min. Additionally, our findings illustrated that doctors' patient-centered communication behavior (β = 0.23, p < 0.001) appeared to be the strongest predictor of longer visit length. It was also found that patients' higher education level (β = 0.10, p = 0.006), having adequate knowledge about the health problem (β = 0.13, p < 0.001), follow-up visits (β = 0.13, p < 0.001), and the presence of female doctors (β = 0.19, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with longer interview times between doctors and patients in primary care settings. Given that doctors' patient-centered communication behavior appears to play the most important role, this study suggests that practicing professionalism in medical consultations, developing effective communication skills and increasing awareness of sociodemographic discrepancies are important to ensure longer appointment lengths and better health outcomes of patients, regardless their sociodemographic and socioeconomic status.
