Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to indicate some basic properties of the Green's functions for the DNG slab materials in comparison with normal materials. It will be shown that a closed form expression can be obtained when the DNG slab has a special constitutive parameters.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel eigenfunction expansion of the electric-type dyadic Green's function for an unbounded gyrotropic medium in terms of the cylindrical vector wave functions. The unbounded Green dyadics are formulated based on the Ohm-Rayleigh method, orthogonality of the vector wave functions, and the newly formulated curl and divergence of dyadic identities. The irrotational part of the Green's function is obtained from the residual theorem. Unlike some of the published work where some assumptions are made prior to the formulation, the irrotational dyadic Green's function in this paper is formulated rigorously based on the idea given by Tai.

Abstract:In this paper, the authors use Ohm-Rayleigh method to obtain the general formulation of dyadic Green's function for the time harmonic current source embedded inside the unbounded biisotropic medium in terms of normalized cylindrical and elliptical cylinder vector wave functions. The singular behavior of the dyadic Green's function in the source region is investigated and taken into account by extracting the delta function singularity. Furthermore, with the help of scattering superposition principle, explicit expressions for the electric-type dyadic Green's functions are derived for source and observation points in different regions of a circular biisotropic cylinder, which is located within a medium of infinite extent made of another biisotropic material. As particular cases, the dyadic Green's functions include achiral, reciprocal and nonreciprocal chiral medium and are therefore of sufficient generality to incorporate most practical applications.
FDTD and PSTD simulations for double negative (DNG) materials applications

Abstract:As a full wave simulation method, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is capable of capturing the transient characteristics of wave propagation. This method has been successfully used in modeling the interactions of electromagnetic waves with double negative (DNG) materials. Another method, the pesudospectral time-domain (PSTD) method, is superior to FDTD in its linear dispersion relation. Another advantage of PSTD is that all field components are now located at a same position in the unit cell. Therefore, it is more natural to handle the boundary condition on interfaces between different materials. In this paper, FDTD and PSTD are used to simulate the transient evolution of wave propagation in structures with DNG materials. Numerical results are given to provide clear descriptions of the novel wave behaviors.

Abstract:In this paper, spectral-domain dyadic Green's functions for the time harmonic electric current source embedded in a two-layer grounded uniaxial bianisotropic media are obtained using Fourier tranform. It is shown that in the uniaxial bianisotropic medium, total spectral electromagnetic field can also be separated into the superposition of transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) wave. Because of the generality of constitutive relations our results include the special cases of achiral, uniaxial, reciprocal and nonreciprocal biisotropic media.

Abstract:The spectral functions are studied in conjunction with the dyadic Green's functions for various media. The dyadic Green's functions are found using the eigenfunction expansion method for homogeneous, inhomogeneous, periodic, lossless, lossy, and anisotropic media, guided by the Bloch- Floquet theorem. For the lossless media cases, the spectral functions can be directly related to the photon local density of states, and hence, to the electromagnetic energy density. For the lossy case, the spectral function can be related to the field correlation function. Because of these properties, one can derive properties for field correlations and the Langevin-source correlations without resorting to the fluctuation dissipation theorem. The results are corroborated by the fluctuation dissipation theorem. An expression for the local density of states for lossy, inhomogeneous, and dispersive media has also been suggested.

Abstract:Green's function has different forms for the first,second and third types of boundary conditions;thus,different types of nodal Green's function methods(NGFM) are used to solve the neutron diffusion equations.A reduced method was developed for the Dirichlet(or first type) boundary condition that includes all the NGFMs in all their forms.The analysis shows that all the NGFMs for all the boundary conditions are equivalent from a mathematical viewpoint.The only difference is that the variables in the nodal coupling equation are classified as neutron flux,net current or partial current at the surface.These NGFMs were used to predict the neutron flux in a pressurized water reactor core for the first,second and third types of boundary condition.The results show that all three NGFM codes produce the same high accuracy with almost the same calculational time.

Abstract:The influence of short-range correlations in nuclei was investigated with realistic nuclear force. The nucleon-nucleon interaction was renormalized with Vlowk technique and applied to the Green’s function calculations. The Dyson equation was reformulated with algebraic diagrammatic constructions. We also analyzed the binding energy of 4He, calculated with chiral potential and CD-Bonn potential. The properties of Green’s function with realistic nuclear forces are also discussed.

Abstract:The nodal Green's function method for 3-D cylindrical geometrywith Neumann boundary condition was developed to correctly and quickly solve the 3-D neutron diffusion equation in a cylindrical geometry. Firstly, the 3-D neutron diffusion equation is converted into three coupled 1-D equations through a transverse averaging procedure as with normal advanced nodal methods. The expression for the corresponding Green's function with the Neumann boundary condition is represented by a Bessel functions in the radial direction. The partial flux equation in the angular direction is approximated in the form of a slab geometry. Then, all of the equations in the three directions are solved in the same way as with the Cartesian geometry. The flux in the cylindrical geometry has been evaluated using this method.

Abstract:We use the 2D general solutions of orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic material to construct the 2D Green's function for a steady line heat source in the interior of two-phase orthotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic plane by ten newly introduced harmonic functions with undetermined constants. The corresponding coupled field can be obtained by substituting these functions into the general solution, and the undetermined constants can be obtained by the continuous conditions and equilibrium conditions. All components of coupled field are expressed in terms of elementary functions and are convenient to use.

Abstract:A good understanding of the mechanical behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) cylindrical shells is necessary for designers and researchers. However, the 3D transient response of FGM cylindrical shells under various boundary conditions has not yet been analyzed. In this paper, the problem is addressed by proposing an approach integrating the state space method, differential quadrature method, and Durbina’s numerical inversion method of Laplace transform. The laminate model is used to obtain the transient solution in the radial direction. At the edges, four kinds of boundary conditions are considered: Clamped-Clamped, Clamped-Simply supported, Clamped-Free, and Simply supported-Simply supported. The results of the proposed method and finite element (FE) method agree with each other excellently. Convergence studies show that the proposed method has a fast convergence rate. The natural frequencies obtained by the proposed method, experiment, and other theoretical methods are in close agreement with each other. The effects of the load frequency and duration, length/outer radius ratio, and the (outer radius-inner radius)/outer radius ratio on the transient response of FGM shells are investigated. Two laws of variation of material properties along the radial direction are considered: the first has material properties varying according to an exponential law along the radial direction, while the second has material properties varying according to a power law. The effect of a functionally graded index on the transient response of FGM shells is investigated in both cases. The results obtained in this paper can serve as benchmark data for further research.

Abstract:The Green's function in Cartesian geometry can be used to replace the complex Green's function in cylindrical geometry when solving the neutron diffusion equation in cylindrical geometry. The nodal Green's function method for cylindrical geometry based on Green's function in Cartesian geometry (RNGFM) and the nodal Green's function method for cylindrical geometry based on Bessel function(CNGFM) are compared in the paper. The result indicates that the advantage of RNGFM is the simplicity of formulation, while the iteration process of CNGFM costs less time._

Abstract:Two dimensional structures, such as graphene ribbons, are important for the future nanoelectronics. The conductances of such complex nanostructures are determined by their transmission probabilities. Usually the transmission is calculated by Green's function technique and scattering matrix approach. Both methods are pertinent to each other via Fish-Lee relationship. Alternatively, a representation transformation can reduce the difficulties for expressing Green's functions. In this work we used Bloch eigenmodes to construct Green's functions and developed the method to be suitable for structures composed of finite length of ribbons and demonstrated the use of this method to analytic expressions in one dimensional structure. In terms of Bloch eigenmodes the Ando's scattering matrices are restored. We also proved the equivalence of Green's function and scattering matrix methods in multi-ribbon structures. In the end a numerical example of superlattice is presented to verify the approach developed in this work.

Abstract:Gradient nano-grained (GNG) metals have shown a better strength-ductility combination compared to their homogeneous counterparts. In this paper, the mechanical properties and the related deformation mechanisms of GNG aluminum were investigated using three-dimensional multiscale discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD). GNG polycrystalline models and uniform nano-grained (UNG) counterparts were constructed within a multiscale DDD framework. A dislocation-penetrable grain boundary model based on a coarse-graining approach was adopted to handle the interaction between dislocations and grain boundaries. The simulation results show that the yield stress and strain hardening of the GNG sample is larger than the value calculated by the rule of mixtures, indicating a synergetic strengthening induced by the gradient structure. The associated microstructure evolution demonstrates that dislocations initially activate and glide in the larger grains and then gradually propagate into the smaller grains in the GNG sample, this sequential yielding of layers with different grain sizes generates stress and strain gradients, which is accommodated by geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs). Moreover, we found that the Bauschinger effect in GNG sample is stronger than those in component UNG samples, suggesting a significant back stress strengthening in the GNG sample during plastic deformation. Finally, a theoretical model is established which successfully describes the Bauschinger effect of GNG and corresponding UNG samples according to the features of dislocation evolution upon unloading. The present study provides insights into the outstanding mechanical property of GNG metals from the view of dislocation dynamics at the submicron scale and offers theoretical guidance for designing strong-and-ductile metals.

Abstract:A new type of Green function approach is introduced for time-domain scattering for a stratified dissipative slab. The new Green functions are defined as mappings from the transmitted field to the split fields (i.e., the right-moving and left-moving fields) at any point within the stratified slab. Unlike the usual Green functions, the present Green functions have compact support in the time variable. The new technique is illustrated for the case of normally incident electromagnetic waves on a stratified slab where the permittivity, permeability, and conductivity vary with the depth. The linear and homogeneous partial differential equations (PDEs) for these "compact Green functions" are derived. The PDEs together with the initial and boundary conditions are well suited for a numerical treatment. Numerical results for the compact Green functions are presented in the direct problem, while in the inverse problem the permittivity and conductivity (or the permeability and conductivity) are reconstructed simultaneously using the reflection and transmission data for the first round trip. The present method is useful and attractive for both the direct and inverse problems due to its simplicity, high speed, and high accuracy in numerical computations.

Numerical results demonstrate that the IQS/CNGFM method is feasible. Meanwhile, the paper provides the method to get physical adjoint flux and tests its calculation accuracy with definite differential method program CITATION to prove the method's feasibility.
Consistent determination of geometrically necessary dislocation density from simulations and experiments

Abstract:The use of Nye's dislocation tensor for calculating the density of geometrically necessary dislocations (GND) is widely adopted in the study of plastically deformed materials. The curl operation involved in finding the Nye tensor, while conceptually straightforward has been marred with inconsistencies and several different definitions are in use. For the three most common definitions, we show that their consistent application leads to the same result. To eliminate frequently encountered confusion, a summary of expressions for Nye's tensor in terms of elastic and plastic deformation gradient, and for both small and large deformations, is presented. A further question when estimating GND density concerns the optimization technique used to solve the under-determined set of equations linking Nye's tensor and GND density. A systematic comparison of the densities obtained by two widely used techniques, L1 and L2 minimisation, shows that both methods yield remarkably similar total GND densities. Thus the mathematically simpler, L2, may be preferred over L1 except when information about the distribution of densities on specific slip systems is required. To illustrate this, we compare experimentally measured lattice distortions beneath nano-indents in pure tungsten, probed using 3D-resolved synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction, with those predicted by 3D strain-gradient crystal plasticity finite element calculations. The results are in good agreement and show that the volumetric component of the elastic strain field has a surprisingly small effect on the determined Nye tensor. This is important for experimental techniques, such as micro-beam Laue measurements and HR-EBSD, where only the deviatoric strain component is measured.

Equivariant neural network for Green's functions of molecules and materials

Abstract:The many-body Green's function provides access to electronic properties beyond density functional theory level in ab inito calculations. In this manuscript, we propose a deep learning framework for predicting the finite-temperature Green's function in atomic orbital space, aiming to achieve a balance between accuracy and efficiency. By predicting the self-energy matrices in Lehmann representation using an equivariant message passing neural network, our method respects its analytical property and the $E(3)$ equivariance. The Green's function is obtained from the predicted self-energy through Dyson equation with target total number of electrons. We present proof-of-concept benchmark results for both molecules and simple periodic systems, showing that our method is able to provide accurate estimate of physical observables such as energy and density of states based on the predicted Green's function.

Abstract:The lattice Green function for the discrete planar Laplacian defined on regular square lattice wrapped around cylinders and tori are rigorously defined and obtained in an exact analytic form. The method of images well-known in potential theory is implemented to derive for many other geometries with free boundaries (semi-infinite or finite cylinders and strips, rectangle) the related exact lattice Green-Neumann functions needed to readily solve discrete Neumann problems or, via a Neumann-to-Dirichlet mapping, discrete Dirichlet problems for these flat square lattices. Some applications are thus proposed as explicit expressions of two-point resistances for related resistor networks, and some probability-based characteristics regarding the associated P\`{o}lya's random walks.

Abstract:Green's functions play an important role in the analyses of electro-magneto-thermo-elastic composite. However, most works available on this topic are in case of identical temperature. Based on the compact 2D general solution of transversely isotropic electro-magneto-thermo-elastic composite, which is expressed in harmonic functions, and employing the trial-and-error method, the 2D Green's function for a steady point heat source in a semi-infinite electro-magneto-thermo-elastic plane is presented by five newly induced harmonic functions. Numerical results are given graphically by contours.
