Facial palsy associated with a parotid mass.

Abstract:To the Editor.—I would like to respond to remarks made to me by Dr Parker Cross of Norfolk, Va, in regard to a case published in theArchivesentitled "Facial Nerve Paralysis Secondary to Benign Parotid Tumor" by LaVenuta et al (1969;90:603-604). I have treated one patient with an arteriovenous malformation of the parotid gland who was seen with a facial paralysis.1The patient related that the mass would swell acutely and become painful on lying down. This patient was seen with acute facial palsy associated with a parotid mass. The possibility always exists that the palsy was unrelated to the mass and represented a coincidental Bell's palsy. I believe that the diagnosis of Bell's palsy should not be made if an underlying cause can be found. It is important that one not assume that a facial paralysis associated with a parotid mass is due to a cancer.
