Abstract:Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a common signal for monitoring people’s sleep quality. Manual sleep stage classification on EEG is a time-consuming task. In this paper, we design a model for automatic sleep stage classification based on raw single-channel EEG. This model can preserve the information, broaden the network and enlarge the receptive field as much as possible to extract appropriate time invariant features and classify sleep stage well. For the class-imbalanced problem in sleep stage classification, most of the exsisting methods rely on cross entropy loss and adjust model hyperparameters by experience, leading to poor performance. We implement a two-step training algorithm. The first is pre-training the model with the hyperparameters obtained by Bayesian Optimization after rebalancing datasets by over-sampling. The second is using feedback loss in model fine-tuning to reduce the impact of class-imbalanced problem. The loss weights dynamically change with the per-class F1-score which is used as feedback information. We evaluate our method on Fpz-Cz channel from the Sleep-EDF dataset. The overall accuracy, macro F1-score, Cohen’s Kappa coefficient are 85.53%, 81.18%, 0.80 respectively, showing our method has better classification performance than the state-of-the-art methods and is an efficient tool for automatic sleep stage classification.

Abstract:Palliative medicine means caring for patients with incurable disease and short life expectancy, or, with the British definition, "the study and management of patients with active, progressive, far advanced disease, for whom the prognosis is limited and the focus of care is the quality of life". Palliative medicine is more than care for the dying. Today palliative medicine is regarded as integral to the treatment pathway for all patients with incurable disease. Up to now, mostly cancer patients have been offered specialist palliative care, but the international trend is to include other patient groups, especially patients with degenerative neurological disease and advanced cardiac and pulmonary disease. Palliative medicine is characterized by a focus not primarily on disease control but rather on symptom relief, social support, spiritual care, and maintenance of physical and psychological functioning and wellbeing. To reach these goals, a multi-professional approach is needed, and the doctor in charge must be highly qualified clinically and academically and willing and able to cooperate with colleagues and other healthcare professionals.

We aimed to a) test the hypothesis that U-Sleep performance is equivalent to trained humans, using a concordance dataset of 50 pediatric polysomnogram excerpts scored by multiple trained scorers, and b) identify clinical and demographic characteristics that impact U-Sleep accuracy, using a clinical dataset of 3114 polysomnograms from a tertiary center. Methods: Agreement between U-Sleep and 'gold' 30-second epoch sleep staging was determined across both datasets. Utilizing the concordance dataset, the hypothesis of equivalence between human scorers and U-Sleep was tested using a Wilcoxon two one-sided test (TOST). Multivariable regression and generalized additive modelling were used on the clinical dataset to estimate the effects of age, comorbidities and polysomnographic findings on U-Sleep performance. Results: The median (interquartile range) Cohen's kappa agreement of U-Sleep and individual trained humans relative to "gold" scoring for 5-stage sleep staging in the concordance dataset were similar, kappa=0.79 (0.19) vs 0.78 (0.13) respectively, and satisfied statistical equivalence (TOST p < 0.01). Median (interquartile range) kappa agreement between U-Sleep 2.0 and clinical sleep-staging was kappa=0.69 (0.22). Modelling indicated lower performance for children < 2 years, those with medical comorbidities possibly altering sleep electroencephalography (kappa reduction=0.07-0.15) and those with decreased sleep efficiency or sleep-disordered breathing (kappa reduction=0.1). Conclusions: While U-Sleep algorithms showed statistically equivalent performance to trained scorers, accuracy was lower in children < 2 years and those with sleep-disordered breathing or comorbidities affecting electroencephalography. U-Sleep is suitable for pediatric clinical utilization provided automated staging is followed by expert clinician review.

Abstract:Sleep screening is an important tool for both healthcare and neuroscientific research. Automatic sleep scoring is an alternative to the time-consuming gold-standard manual scoring procedure. Recently there have seen promising results on automatic stage scoring by extracting spatio-temporal features via deep neural networks from electroencephalogram (EEG). However, such methods fail to consistently yield good performance due to a missing piece in data representation: the medical criterion of the sleep scoring task on top of EEG features. We argue that capturing stage-specific features that satisfy the criterion of sleep medicine is non-trivial for automatic sleep scoring. This paper considers two criteria: Transient stage marker and Overall profile of EEG features, then we propose a physiologically meaningful framework for sleep stage scoring via mixed deep neural networks. The framework consists of two sub-networks: feature extraction networks, constructed in consideration of the physiological characteristics of sleep, and an attention-based scoring decision network. Moreover, we quantize the framework for potential use under an IoT setting. For proof-of-concept, the performance of the proposed framework is demonstrated by introducing multiple sleep datasets with the largest comprising 42,560 h recorded from 5,793 subjects. From the experiment results, the proposed method achieves a competitive stage scoring performance, especially for Wake, N2, and N3, with higher F1 scores of 0.92, 0.86, and 0.88, respectively. Moreover, the feasibility analysis of framework quantization provides a potential for future implementation in the edge computing field and clinical settings.

Abstract:Study Objectives: Automated sleep staging has been previously limited by a combination of clinical and physiological heterogeneity. Both factors are in principle addressable with large data sets that enable robust calibration. However, the impact of sample size remains uncertain. The objectives are to investigate the extent to which machine learning methods can approximate the performance of human scorers when supplied with sufficient training cases and to investigate how staging performance depends on the number of training patients, contextual information, model complexity, and imbalance between sleep stage proportions.Methods: A total of 102 features were extracted from six electroencephalography (EEG) channels in routine polysomnography. Two thousand nights were partitioned into equal (n = 1000) training and testing sets for validation. We used epoch-by-epoch Cohen's kappa statistics to measure the agreement between classifier output and human scorer according to American Academy of Sleep Medicine scoring criteria.Results: Epoch-by-epoch Cohen's kappa improved with increasing training EEG recordings until saturation occurred (n = ~300). The kappa value was further improved by accounting for contextual (temporal) information, increasing model complexity, and adjusting the model training procedure to account for the imbalance of stage proportions. The final kappa on the testing set was 0.68. Testing on more EEG recordings leads to kappa estimates with lower variance.Conclusion: Training with a large data set enables automated sleep staging that compares favorably with human scorers. Because testing was performed on a large and heterogeneous data set, the performance estimate has low variance and is likely to generalize broadly.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Accurate sleep staging of EEG data from polysomnography (PSG) is important in the diagnosis of narcolepsy. Human sleep staging is costly and labor intensive, but automated sleep staging algorithms must be rigorously tested in narcoleptic patients to ensure valid performance. PSGs of narcoleptic patients often tend to be more fragmented and variable than in non-narcoleptic populations, making it challenging for both humans and automated algorithms to accurately stage sleep. Here, we evaluate the performance of a deep learning model validated in a general sleep clinic population for staging nocturnal PSGs in patients with narcolepsy. Methods SleepStageMLTM, a deep-learning model for performing sleep staging on EEG signals, was trained on a large database of polysomnography recordings from a heterogenous population within the Beacon Clinico-PSG Database. The algorithm was evaluated on a held-out set of 28 overnight PSGs from patients with narcolepsy or hypersomnolence and 57 overnight PSGs from individuals without narcolepsy or hypersomnolence. Each PSG was manually scored by a human expert, and the performance of the automated algorithm was compared across the two cohorts. Results Automated sleep staging performance was high across both cohorts. The average F1-score for the control cohort and the narcolepsy cohort was 0.758 and 0.744 respectively. The positive percent agreements (PPAs) for the control cohort were 87%, 38%, 84%, 91%, and 93% for stages W, N1, N2, N3, and R respectively. For the narcolepsy cohort, the PPAs across the same stages were 91%, 33%, 81%, 86%, and 88% respectively. The algorithm’s median absolute error in estimating REM latency, REM duration, and REM percentage in the control cohort was 1.25 minutes, 8.5 minutes, and 2% points, respectively. The same metrics for the narcolepsy cohort were 2.75 minutes, 11.75 minutes, and 3% points respectively. Conclusion A deep-learning model trained on diverse data automatically and accurately staged PSGs from narcoleptic patients and was comparable to performance of a human expert. The algorithm estimated REM parameters accurately in both cohorts. Automated staging algorithms like the one described here have the potential to accelerate diagnosis and monitor therapeutic efficacy for narcolepsy treatments by more efficiently and consistently staging sleep. Abstract:Abstract Purpose To develop an automated framework for sleep stage scoring from PSG via a deep neural network. Methods An automated deep neural network was proposed by using a multi-model integration strategy with multiple signal channels as input. All of the data were collected from one single medical center from July 2017 to April 2019. Model performance was evaluated by overall classification accuracy, precision, recall, weighted F1 score, and Cohen’s Kappa. Results Two hundred ninety-four sleep studies were included in this study; 122 composed the training dataset, 20 composed the validation dataset, and 152 were used in the testing dataset. The network achieved human-level annotation performance with an average accuracy of 0.8181, weighted F1 score of 0.8150, and Cohen’s Kappa of 0.7276. Top-2 accuracy (the proportion of test samples for which the true label is among the two most probable labels given by the model) was significantly improved compared to the overall classification accuracy, with the average being 0.9602. The number of arousals affected the model’s performance. Conclusion This research provides a robust and reliable model with the inter-rater agreement nearing that of human experts. Determining the most appropriate evaluation parameters for sleep staging is a direction for future research.

Abstract:Accuracy and limitations of automatic scoring of sleep stages and electroencephalogram arousals from a single derivation (Fp1 -Fp2 ) were studied in 29 healthy adults using a portable wireless polysomnographic recorder. All recordings were scored five times: twice by a referent scorer who viewed the standard polysomnographic montage and observed the American Academy of Sleep Medicine rules (referent scoring and blind rescoring); and once by the same scorer who viewed only the Fp1 -Fp2 signal (alternative scoring), by another expert from the same institution, and by the algorithm. Automatic, alternative and independent expert scoring were compared with the referent scoring on an epoch-by-epoch basis. The algorithm's agreement with the reference (81.0%, Cohen's κ = 0.75) was comparable to the inter-rater agreement (83.3%, Cohen's κ = 0.78) or agreement between the referent scoring and manual scoring of the frontopolar derivation (80.7%, Cohen's κ = 0.75). Most misclassifications by the algorithm occurred during uneventful wake/sleep transitions, whereas cortical arousals, rapid eye movement and stable non-rapid eye movement sleep were detected accurately. The algorithm yielded accurate estimates of total sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, arousal indices and times spent in different stages. The findings affirm the utility of automatic scoring of stages and arousals from a single frontopolar derivation as a method for assessment of sleep architecture in healthy adults.

Abstract:Reliable classification of sleep stages is crucial in sleep medicine and neuroscience research for providing valuable insights, diagnoses, and understanding of brain states. The current gold standard method for sleep stage classification is polysomnography (PSG). Unfortunately, PSG is an expensive and cumbersome process involving numerous electrodes, often conducted in an unfamiliar clinic and annotated by a professional. Although commercial devices like smartwatches track sleep, their performance is well below PSG. To address these disadvantages, we present a feed-forward neural network that achieves gold-standard levels of agreement using only a single lead of electrocardiography (ECG) data. Specifically, the median five-stage Cohen's kappa is 0.725 on a large, diverse dataset of 5 to 90-year-old subjects. Comparisons with a comprehensive meta-analysis of between-human inter-rater agreement confirm the non-inferior performance of our model. Finally, we developed a novel loss function to align the training objective with Cohen's kappa. Our method offers an inexpensive, automated, and convenient alternative for sleep stage classification—further enhanced by a real-time scoring option. Cardiosomnography, or a sleep study conducted with ECG only, could take expert-level sleep studies outside the confines of clinics and laboratories and into realistic settings. This advancement democratizes access to high-quality sleep studies, considerably enhancing the field of sleep medicine and neuroscience. It makes less-expensive, higher-quality studies accessible to a broader community, enabling improved sleep research and more personalized, accessible sleep-related healthcare interventions.

Abstract:Objective. Sleep staging based on full polysomnography is the gold standard in the diagnosis of many sleep disorders. It is however costly, complex, and obtrusive due to the use of multiple electrodes. Automatic sleep staging based on single-channel electro-oculography (EOG) is a promising alternative, requiring fewer electrodes which could be self-applied below the hairline. EOG sleep staging algorithms are however yet to be validated in clinical populations with sleep disorders. Approach. We utilized the SOMNIA dataset, comprising 774 recordings from subjects with various sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep-disordered breathing, hypersomnolence, circadian rhythm disorders, parasomnias, and movement disorders. The recordings were divided into train (574), validation (100), and test (100) groups. We trained a neural network that integrated transformers within a U-Net backbone. This design facilitated learning of arbitrary-distance temporal relationships within and between the EOG and hypnogram. Main results. For 5-class sleep staging, we achieved median accuracies of 85.0% and 85.2% and Cohen's kappas of 0.781 and 0.796 for left and right EOG, respectively. The performance using the right EOG was significantly better than using the left EOG, possibly because in the recommended AASM setup, this electrode is located closer to the scalp. The proposed model is robust to the presence of a variety of sleep disorders, displaying no significant difference in performance for subjects with a certain sleep disorder compared to those without. Significance. The results show that accurate sleep staging using single-channel EOG can be done reliably for subjects with a variety of sleep disorders.

Abstract:Sleep stage classification plays a pivotal role in effective diagnosis and treatment of sleep related disorders. Traditionally, sleep scoring is done manually by trained sleep scorers. The analysis of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded during sleep by clinicians is tedious, time-consuming and prone to human errors. Therefore, it is clinically important to score sleep stages using machine learning techniques to get accurate diagnosis. Several studies have been proposed for automated detection of sleep stages. However, these studies have employed only healthy normal subjects (good sleepers). The proposed study focuses on the automated sleep-stage scoring of subjects suffering from seven different kind of sleep disorders such as insomnia, bruxism, narcolepsy, nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE), periodic leg movement (PLM), rapid eye movement (REM) behavioural disorder and sleep-disordered breathing as well as normal subjects. The open source physionet’s cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) sleep database is used for this study. The EEG epochs are decomposed into sub-bands using a new class of optimized wavelet filters. Two EEG channels, namely F4-C4 and C4-A1, combined are used for this work as they can provide more insights into the changes in EEG signals during sleep. The norm features are computed from six sub-bands coefficients of optimal wavelet filter bank and fed to various supervised machine learning classifiers. We have obtained the highest classification performance using an ensemble of bagged tree (EBT) classifier with 10-fold cross validation. The CAP database comprising of 80 subjects is divided into ten different subsets and then ten different sleep-stage scoring tasks are performed. Since, the CAP database is unbalanced with different duration of sleep stages, the balanced dataset also has been created using over-sampling and under-sampling techniques. The highest average accuracy of 85.3% and Cohen’s Kappa coefficient of 0.786 and accuracy of 92.8% and Cohen’s Kappa coefficient of 0.915 are obtained for unbalanced and balanced databases, respectively. The proposed method can reliably classify the sleep stages using single or dual channel EEG epochs of 30 s duration instead of using multimodal polysomnography (PSG) which are generally used for sleep-stage scoring. Our developed automated system is ready to be tested with more sleep EEG data and can be employed in various sleep laboratories to evaluate the quality of sleep in various sleep disorder patients and normal subjects.

Abstract:Abstract Sleep is a key phenomenon to both understanding, diagnosing and treatment of many illnesses, as well as for studying health and well being in general. Today, the only widely accepted method for clinically monitoring sleep is the polysomnography (PSG), which is, however, both expensive to perform and influences the sleep. This has led to investigations into light weight electroencephalography (EEG) alternatives. However, there has been a substantial performance gap between proposed alternatives and PSG. Here we show results from an extensive study of 80 full night recordings of healthy participants wearing both PSG equipment and ear-EEG. We obtain automatic sleep scoring with an accuracy close to that achieved by manual scoring of scalp EEG (the current gold standard), using only ear-EEG as input, attaining an average Cohen’s kappa of 0.73. In addition, this high performance is present for all 20 subjects. Finally, 19/20 subjects found that the ear-EEG had little to no negative effect on their sleep, and subjects were generally able to apply the equipment without supervision. This finding marks a turning point on the road to clinical long term sleep monitoring: the question should no longer be whether ear-EEG could ever be used for clinical home sleep monitoring, but rather when it will be.

Abstract:We developed a machine learning methodology for automatic sleep stage scoring. Our time-frequency analysis-based feature extraction is fine-tuned to capture sleep stage-specific signal features as described in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine manual that the human experts follow. We used ensemble learning with an ensemble of stacked sparse autoencoders for classifying the sleep stages. We used class-balanced random sampling across sleep stages for each model in the ensemble to avoid skewed performance in favor of the most represented sleep stages, and addressed the problem of misclassification errors due to class imbalance while significantly improving worst-stage classification. We used an openly available dataset from 20 healthy young adults for evaluation. We used a single channel of EEG from this dataset, which makes our method a suitable candidate for longitudinal monitoring using wearable EEG in real-world settings. Our method has both high overall accuracy (78%, range 75–80%), and high mean F1$$F_1$$-score (84%, range 82–86%) and mean accuracy across individual sleep stages (86%, range 84–88%) over all subjects. The performance of our method appears to be uncorrelated with the sleep efficiency and percentage of transitional epochs in each recording.

Abstract:Sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, parasomnias, and hypersomnia, affect 50-70 million adults in the United States (Hillman et al., 2006). Overnight polysomnography (PSG), including brain monitoring using electroencephalography (EEG), is a central component of the diagnostic evaluation for sleep disorders. While PSG is conventionally performed by trained technologists, the recent rise of powerful neural network learning algorithms combined with large physiological datasets offers the possibility of automation, potentially making expert-level sleep analysis more widely available. We propose SLEEPNET (Sleep EEG neural network), a deployed annotation tool for sleep staging. SLEEPNET uses a deep recurrent neural network trained on the largest sleep physiology database assembled to date, consisting of PSGs from over 10,000 patients from the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Sleep Laboratory. SLEEPNET achieves human-level annotation performance on an independent test set of 1,000 EEGs, with an average accuracy of 85.76% and algorithm-expert inter-rater agreement (IRA) of kappa = 79.46%, comparable to expert-expert IRA.

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives Sleep is reflected not only in the electroencephalogram but also in heart rhythms and breathing patterns. We hypothesized that it is possible to accurately stage sleep based on the electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory signals. Methods Using a dataset including 8682 polysomnograms, we develop deep neural networks to stage sleep from ECG and respiratory signals. Five deep neural networks consisting of convolutional networks and long- and short-term memory networks are trained to stage sleep using heart and breathing, including the timing of R peaks from ECG, abdominal and chest respiratory effort, and the combinations of these signals. Results ECG in combination with the abdominal respiratory effort achieved the best performance for staging all five sleep stages with a Cohen’s kappa of 0.585 (95% confidence interval ±0.017); and 0.760 (±0.019) for discriminating awake vs. rapid eye movement vs. nonrapid eye movement sleep. Performance is better for younger ages, whereas it is robust for body mass index, apnea severity, and commonly used outpatient medications. Conclusions Our results validate that ECG and respiratory effort provide substantial information about sleep stages in a large heterogeneous population. This opens new possibilities in sleep research and applications where electroencephalography is not readily available or may be infeasible.

Abstract:Automatic sleep stage classification is an effective technology compared to conventional artificial visual inspection in the field of sleep staging. Numerous algorithms based on machine learning and deep learning on single-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) have been proposed in recent years, however, category imbalance and cross-subject discrepancy are still the main factors restricting the accuracy of existing methods. This study proposed an innovative end-to-end neural network to solve these problems, specifically, four data augmentation methods were designed to eliminate category imbalance, and domain adaptation modules were designed for the alignment of marginal distribution, conditional distribution, and channel and spatial level distribution of feature maps, as well as the capture of transferable regions on the feature maps using a transfer attention mechanism. We conducted experiments on two publicly available datasets (Sleep-EDF Database Expanded, 2013 and 2018 version), Cohen's kappa coefficient (k) of 0.77 (Fpz-Cz) and 0.73 (Pz-Oz) were realized on the Sleep-EDF-2013 dataset, and a k of 0.75 (Fpz-Cz) and 0.68 (Pz-Oz) were realized on the Sleep-EDF-2018 dataset. An experiment was also conducted on the dataset drawn from the 2018 Physionet challenge, which containing people with sleep disorders, and a performance improvement was still found. Our comparative experiments with similar studies showed that our model was superior to most other studies, indicating our proposed EEG data augmentation and domain adaptation based cross-subject discrepancy alleviation approach is effective to improve the performance of automatic sleep staging.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is immediate and sensitive to neurological changes resulting from sleep stages and is considered a computing tool for understanding the association between neurological outcomes and sleep stages. EEG is expected to be an efficient approach for sleep stage prediction outside a highly equipped clinical setting compared with multimodal physiological signal-based polysomnography. This study aims to quantify the neurological EEG-biomarkers and predict five-class sleep stages using sleep EEG data. We investigated the three-channel EEG sleep recordings of 154 individuals (mean age of 53.8 ± 15.4 years) from the Haaglanden Medisch Centrum (HMC, The Hague, The Netherlands) open-access public dataset of PhysioNet. The power of fast-wave alpha, beta, and gamma rhythms decreases; and the power of slow-wave delta and theta oscillations gradually increases as sleep becomes deeper. Delta wave power ratios (DAR, DTR, and DTABR) may be considered biomarkers for their characteristics of attenuation in NREM sleep and subsequent increase in REM sleep. The overall accuracy of the C5.0, Neural Network, and CHAID machine-learning models are 91%, 89%, and 84%, respectively, for multi-class classification of the sleep stages. The EEG-based sleep stage prediction approach is expected to be utilized in a wearable sleep monitoring system.

Abstract:The scoring of sleep stages is one of the essential tasks in sleep analysis. Since a manual procedure requires considerable human and financial resources, and incorporates some subjectivity, an automated approach could result in several advantages. There have been many developments in this area, and in order to provide a comprehensive overview, it is essential to review relevant recent works and summarise the characteristics of the approaches, which is the main aim of this article. To achieve it, we examined articles published between 2018 and 2022 that dealt with the automated scoring of sleep stages. In the final selection for in-depth analysis, 125 articles were included after reviewing a total of 515 publications. The results revealed that automatic scoring demonstrates good quality (with Cohen's kappa up to over 0.80 and accuracy up to over 90%) in analysing EEG/EEG + EOG + EMG signals. At the same time, it should be noted that there has been no breakthrough in the quality of results using these signals in recent years. Systems involving other signals that could potentially be acquired more conveniently for the user (e.g. respiratory, cardiac or movement signals) remain more challenging in the implementation with a high level of reliability but have considerable innovation capability. In general, automatic sleep stage scoring has excellent potential to assist medical professionals while providing an objective assessment.

Abstract:Nowadays, the hectic work life of people has led to sleep deprivation. This may further result in sleep-related disorders and adverse physiological conditions. Therefore, sleep study has become an active research area. Sleep scoring is crucial for detecting sleep-related disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, narcolepsy, periodic leg movement (PLM), and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Sleep is conventionally monitored in a sleep laboratory using polysomnography (PSG) which is the recording of various physiological signals. The traditional sleep stage scoring (SSG) done by professional sleep scorers is a tedious, strenuous, and time-consuming process as it is manual. Hence, developing a machine-learning model for automatic SSG is essential. In this study, we propose an automated SSG approach based on the biorthogonal wavelet filter bank's (BWFB) novel least squares (LS) design. We have utilized a huge Wisconsin sleep cohort (WSC) database in this study. The proposed study is a pioneering work on automatic sleep stage classification using the WSC database, which includes good sleepers and patients suffering from various sleep-related disorders, including apnea, insomnia, hypertension, diabetes, and asthma. To investigate the generalization of the proposed system, we evaluated the proposed model with the following publicly available databases: cyclic alternating pattern (CAP), sleep EDF, ISRUC, MIT-BIH, and the sleep apnea database from St. Vincent's University. This study uses only two unipolar EEG channels, namely O1-M2 and C3-M2, for the scoring. The Hjorth parameters (HP) are extracted from the wavelet subbands (SBS) that are obtained from the optimal BWFB. To classify sleep stages, the HP features are fed to several supervised machine learning classifiers. 12 different datasets have been created to develop a robust model. A total of 12 classification tasks (CT) have been conducted employing various classification algorithms. Our developed model achieved the best accuracy of 83.2% and Cohen's Kappa of 0.7345 to reliably distinguish five sleep stages, using an ensemble bagged tree classifier with 10-fold cross-validation using WSC data. We also observed that our system is either better or competitive with existing state-of-art systems when we tested with the above-mentioned five databases other than WSC. This method yielded promising results using only two EEG channels using a huge WSC database. Our approach is simple and hence, the developed model can be installed in home-based clinical systems and wearable devices for sleep scoring.
