Abstract:Objective The aims of the present study were to explore the occurrence of childhood trauma and importantly to determine the impacts of childhood trauma on psychosocial features in a Chinese sample of young adults.Methods A survey was carried out in a group of 555 university students by using Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Dysfunctional Attitudes Questionnaire (DAS), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS). The moderate-severe cut-off scores for CTQ were used to calculate the prevalence of childhood trauma, and then psychosocial features were compared between individuals with and without childhood trauma.Results A proportion of 18.6% of university students had self-reported childhood trauma exposures. Subjects with childhood trauma reported higher scores of SDS, SAS, DAS, and psychoticism and neuroticism dimensions of EPQ (t=4.311-5.551, p<0.001); while lower scores of SSRS and extraversion dimension of EPQ (t=-4.061- -3.039, p<0.01). Regression analyses further revealed that scores of SAS and DAS were positively (Adjusted B=0.211-0.230, p<0.05), while scores of SSRS were negatively (Adjusted B=-0.273- -0.240, p<0.05) associated with specific CTQ scores.Conclusion Childhood trauma is still a common social and psychological problem. Individuals with childhood trauma show much more depression, anxiety, distorted cognition, personality deficits, and lower levels of social support, which may represent the social and psychological vulnerability for developing psychiatric disorders after childhood trauma experiences.

Abstract:Disorders of sexual development (DSD) refer to the congenital abnormalities of chromosomes, gonads, or gender anatomy. Children with DSD usually experience more stress. The present study aims to evaluate the mental health status of children with DSD, and to explore the potential relevant factors. We included 30 children with DSD and 30 age- and gender-matched children without DSD as the control group. All the children and their parents completed the scales of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA). Children over 8 years old (n = 22) completed the Screen Scale for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED), the Depression Self-rating Scale for Children (DSRSC), and the Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran-own memories of parental rearing practices in childhood. DSD children had significantly higher somatic anxiety, mental anxiety, and total anxiety scores than the control group (p < 0.001). The scores of the SCARED, anxiety, and depression subscales of DSD children were higher than those of control children (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). The correlation analysis showed that the score of generalized anxiety was positively related to age and entertainment. The regression analysis showed that age was a major factor that affected generalized anxiety in DSD children, and neuroticism was a major factor of anxiety disorder and separation anxiety in DSD children. Children with DSD have obvious anxiety problems, which are associated with family environmental factors (entertainment, success, and conflicts) and age. It is important to focus emphasis on emotional stability in children with DSD for detecting anxiety-related emotional disorders early.

Abstract:AIM To ascertain whether there is a relationship between the perceived importance of pain management tasks and the quality of an individual nurse's practice. BACKGROUND The evidence to guide nurses' pain management practices is readily available. However, children's nurses' pain management practices often fall short of the ideal. The (lack of) priority attributed to pain management has been suggested as one reason for this. However, this supposition has not previously been explored. DESIGN Participant observation. METHOD Data were collected about children's nurses' (n = 13) post-operative pain management practices on one children's surgical ward in the English Midlands. Nurses (n = 12) also completed a questionnaire to provide a measure of the importance attributed to pain management tasks. RESULTS The questionnaire responses of individual participants (n = 12) were compared to the observational data. The perceived importance of a pain management task did not affect the likelihood of it being undertaken. CONCLUSION Several explanations for these results have been put forward. It is apparent that the hypothesis, put forward in other studies that increasing the priority attributed to pain management will improve pain management practices may be overly simplistic. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE The evidence to guide nurses' pain management practices is readily available. However, children's nurses' pain management practices seem to fall short of the ideal. Possible reasons for this need to be explored so that practice can be improved.

Abstract:Background: Extant studies have examined the role of childhood abuse experiences in adolescents' mental and behavioral reactions during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it remained unclear whether different childhood abuse patterns had sensitizing or steeling effects on these psychological and behavioral problems. Objective: To elucidate the sensitizing or steeling effect of childhood abuse on subsequent adverse experiences, the current study examined patterns of childhood abuse and assessed their effects on adolescents' depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Participants and setting: In total, 1890 adolescents (969 females, mean age 14 years; 187 from a single-parent family, 858 were the only child in their family) were selected to complete self-report questionnaires at three time points (November 2019, November 2020, and November 2021). Methods: Latent profile analysis was used to identify patterns of childhood abuse, and linear regression analysis was used to assess the predictive effects of childhood abuse patterns on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Results: The latent profile analysis identified five distinct groups: high physical/emotional abuse group, moderate physical/emotional abuse group, high emotional abuse group, ambivalent abuse group, and low physical/emotional abuse group. Compared with those in the low physical/ emotional abuse group, adolescents in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse groups had a lasting positive association with problematic behaviors, and adolescents in the ambivalent abuse group had a long-term positive association with depressive symptoms during the pandemic. Conclusions: Preexisting childhood abuse had a sensitizing rather than a steeling effect on depressive symptoms and problematic behaviors during the pandemic. Furthermore, the longterm sensitizing effects mainly occurred in the high and moderate physical/emotional abuse and ambivalent abuse groups.
Intimate Partner Violence Against Women and Its Association with Depression in Three Regions of China: a Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:BackgroundIntimate partner violence (IPV) is recognised as a major public health and social problem globally, with consequences for the individual, the family, and society. However, research on IPV in China is scarce. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of different types of violence among Chinese women, determine risk factors, and explore the associations with depression.MethodsWe did a cross-sectional study in six provinces across the three regions of China using a self-completion questionnaire developed for the study. We purposively selected the provincial capital and one rural county in each province. Questionnaires were distributed in hospitals and public places to women aged 18 years and older who had ever been in an intimate relationship. We used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale to measure depression. We used binary logistic regression to analyse risk factors and the associations between violence and depression. Ethical approval was obtained from the Medical Ethics Committee of Zhejiang University, School of Public Health.FindingsFrom July 10 to Sept 3, 2018, 2987 women were enrolled. The prevalence of psychological, physical, and sexual violence was 77·7% (2322), 40·2% (1201), and 11·0% (330), respectively: 52·0% (1553) had experienced two or three types of violence in their life. Risk factors were low education attainment, having one child or more, residence in western provinces, having an income lower than the partner's, and economic pressure. The prevalence of severe depression was 18·3% (425/2322), 23·8% (286/1201), and 39·4% (130/330) in women experiencing psychological, physical and sexual violence, respectively. The odds of severe depression were 6·62 (95% CI 4·49–9·76) for psychological violence, 4·31 (3·39–5·48) for physical violence, and 5·47 (4·01–7·45) sexual violence, after controlling for age, occupation, education attainment, and residence.InterpretationThere is a clear need for measures to raise awareness and prevention of all types of IPV. Violence victimization and suicide attempts among adolescents aged 12-15 years from thirty-eight low- and middle-income countries

Abstract:Objective: The association between violence victimization and suicide attempts in a large representative sample of adolescents from low- and middle-income-countries (LMICs) of multiple continents has never been investigated. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between being a victim of physical attacks (independent variable) and suicide attempts (dependent variable) in a sample of 117,472 students aged 12-15 years [mean (SD) age 13.8 (0.9) years; girls 49.4%] from thirty-eight LMICs in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) were analyzed. Self-reported data on past 12-month suicide attempts and exposure to physical attacks were collected. Logistic regression and meta-analysis were conducted. Results: The overall prevalence of suicide attempts and physical attacks were 10.1% and 39.4%, respectively. Overall, the results of the meta-analysis based on country-wise estimates adjusted for potential confounders (i.e., age, sex, food insecurity, alcohol consumption, bullying victimization, anxiety-induced sleep problems, low parental support/involvement, loneliness) showed that physical attacks were associated with a 1.71 (95%CI = 1.62-1.81) times higher odds for suicide attempt. Conclusions: In this large sample of adolescents from multiple LMICs, violence victimization was associated with significantly increased odds of suicide attempts. Future longitudinal studies are required to assess causality, and whether addressing exposure to violence can positively impact on adolescent suicide rates.
Associations between Adverse Childhood Experience Patterns and Anxiety and Depressive Symptoms among Chinese College Students

Abstract:Abstract Purpose With depression and anxiety becoming one of the major public health problems in China, more evidence shows the long-lasting negative effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on mental health. This study aimed to explore the ACE exposure patterns in Chinese college students and their associations with mental health problems in adulthood. Methods In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from the Chinese college students aged 18 years old and above. Depressive symptoms and anxiety were measured using the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). ACEs were measured with the International Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-IQ), and the ACE patterns were identified using latent class analysis (LCA). Then, logit regression models were employed to analyze the association between ACE exposure patterns and anxiety and depressive symptoms. Results A total of 536 Chinese college students were recruited in this study. Nearly 68.7% had at least one ACE and 17.2% were exposed to at least four types of ACEs. Three specific ACE patterns were identified, including “low ACEs” (63.1%), “family dysfunction but low childhood abuse” (20.1%), and “high domestic violence and childhood abuse” (16.8%). Compared with the “low ACEs” class, both the “high domestic violence and childhood abuse” class and the “family dysfunction but low childhood abuse” class showed significantly higher risks of depression and anxiety (P < 0.05). Conclusions The co-occurrence of ACEs was positively associated with higher risks of anxiety and depressive symptoms among Chinese college students and different patterns of ACE exposure may lead to diverse mental health outcomes.
Childhood adversity subtypes and violence victimization and perpetration among early adolescents in Shanghai, China

Abstract:Background This cross-sectional study aimed to identify adverse childhood experience (ACE) subtypes using variable- and person-centered approaches and examine the possible sex-differentiated associations with violence involvement as victim, perpetrator, and victim-perpetrator. Methods Adolescents aged 10–14 years in three junior high schools in Shanghai, China, were selected using a cluster sampling method in November and December 2017. Participants were surveyed anonymously using a computer-assisted self-interview approach via tablets. Thirteen items modified from the CDC-Kaiser ACE study were used to measure the ACEs. Results show subtypes as neglect, abuse, and household dysfunction by developing cumulative index score from the variable perspective and subgroups identified through the latent class analysis (LCA) from the person perspective. Logistic regression analyses were used to test the association between each ACE subtype and violence victimization and perpetration after adjusting for some demographic characteristics. Results A total of 1,700 participants were included in the final analysis. Approximately 1,322 (77.76 %) participants reported experiencing at least one ACE. The prevalence of neglect, abuse, and household dysfunction was 64.12 % ( n = 1090), 61.29 % ( n = 1042), and 18.24 % ( n = 310), respectively. Three classes were identified through the LCA: low exposure to all ACEs ( n = 854, 50.23 %), high exposure to emotional and physical abuse and neglect (n = 715, 42.06 %), and high exposure to all ACEs ( n = 131,7.71 %). After controlling the covariates, experiencing abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction was significantly related to violence victimization (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 3.19, 3.29, 2.37, P < 0.001) and victim-perpetrator (aOR = 3.48, 4.41, 5.16, P < 0.001). Adolescent violence perpetration was only found to be associated with being neglected (aOR = 2.37, P = 0.003) and suffering household dysfunction (aOR = 3.25, P < 0.001). LCA revealed the cumulative effects of ACEs on adolescent violence victimization and perpetration. Sex-stratified analysis indicate that girls were more vulnerable to the negative effects of ACEs, with a higher risk of perpetration among girls exposed to distinctive subtypes or multiple ACEs. Conclusions ACEs were ubiquitous and significantly associated with an elevated risk of violence victimization and perpetration during early adolescence. Future research should examine whether these associations persist over time and the intermediating mechanism from the perspectives of individual neurodevelopment, cognition and resilience ability, and social support.

Abstract:Background Material and social environmental stressors affect mental health in adolescence. Protective factors such as social support from family and friends may help to buffer the effects of adversity. Aims The association of violence exposure and emotional disorders was examined in Cape Town adolescents. Method A total of 1034 Grade 8 high school students participated from seven government co-educational schools in Cape Town, South Africa. Exposure to violence in the past 12 months and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms were measured by the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, depressive and anxiety symptoms by the Short Moods and Feelings Questionnaire and the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale. Results Exposure to violence was associated with high scores on depressive (odds ratio (OR)=6.23, 95% CI 4.2–9.2), anxiety (OR=5.40, 95% CI 2.4–12.4) and PTSD symptoms (OR=8.93, 95% CI 2.9–27.2) and increased risk of self-harm (OR=5.72, 95% CI 1.2–25.9) adjusting for gender and social support. Conclusions We found that high exposure to violence was associated with high levels of emotional disorders in adolescents that was not buffered by social support. There is an urgent need for interventions to reduce exposure to violence in young people in this setting.

Childhood peer physical violence victimization and its association with health-related risk behaviors in adolescents

Abstract:Objective To investigate the prevalence of childhood peer physical violence victimization and to explore its associations with health-related risk behaviors in adolescents.Methods A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in adolescents from two higher vocational schools in Beijing and Henan province.Results Of the 1 349 students surveyed,29.43％reported having suffered one or more of the following peer physical violence victimization in primaiy school or secondary school:24.31％ being beaten by hand,16.38％ being hit by books or stationery and 5.86％ being beaten with sticks or other items.The prevalence was significantly higher in boys than girls (43.22％ vs.17.20％).Multivariate analysis showed that being male(OR =3.390),living without the company of both parents most of the time before 16 years old(OR=1.377) and having lower social economic status(OR =1.446) were risk factors for peer physical violence victimization.Logistic regression analysis indicated that,compared with respondents who reported no childhood peer physical violence victimization experiences,those who reported childhood peer physical violence victimization experiences were at significantly increased risk of many health-related risk behaviors,eg.feeling sad or hopeless(OR =2.232),suicidal ideation(OR =3.835),suicidal attempt(OR =3.587),getting drunk(OR =1.376),fighting (OR=1.930) during the past 12 months,smoking(OR=1.559),drinking(OR=1.421),unhealthy weight loss behaviors(OR=2.617-2.853) during the past 30 days and depressive symptoms(OR=2.763) after adjusting for general demographic factors.Conclusion Child who survived peer physical violence victimization in primary and secondary school is risk behaviors in adolescence,suggesting that awareness be raised of the impact of campus violence on the psychological health of the victimized children and attention should be paid to the prevention of campus violence.

Prevalence and Contributing Factors of Childhood Trauma, Anxiety, and Depression Among Adolescents From Two-Child Families in China

Abstract:The two-child policy has been implemented in China since 2016 and has attracted the attention of the world. Adolescents may face huge psychological challenges in the process of changing family structures and relationships. To date, no mental health survey of adolescents from two-child families has been conducted. We investigated the prevalence and risk factors for childhood trauma, anxiety, and depression in two-child families in a statistically representative sample of Chinese senior high school students from Shanghai. A total of 426 participants were randomly selected from 1,059 students of four senior high schools in different districts of Shanghai. The childhood trauma questionnaire-short form (CTQ-SF), self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were used as the screening tools. We found that the overall prevalence of childhood trauma, anxiety, and depression among senior high school students in two-child families was 46.70% (95% CI, 39.93–53.47%), 22.17% (95% CI, 16.53–27.81%), and 35.85% (95% CI, 29.34–42.36%), respectively. The two-child families was an important factor associated childhood trauma, emotional neglect, and physical neglect (χ 2 = 5.984, p = 0.014; χ 2 = 4.071, p = 0.044; χ 2 = 4.202, p = 0.040). Ranking in two-child families was a risk factor for childhood trauma (β = −0.135, p = 0.048). Parental preference was a significantly correlated with physical abuse, physical neglect, anxiety, and depression (β = −1.581 to 0.088, p < 0.05). Meanwhile, emotional abuse, physical abuse, emotional neglect, and physical neglect of participants in the two groups were positively correlated with anxiety and depression ( r = 0.195–0.478, p < 0.05). There was a significant relationship between sexual abuse and anxiety symptoms in the one-child family group ( r = 0.161, p < 0.05). The findings suggest that the overall prevalence of childhood trauma, anxiety and depression among adolescents from two-child families in China was high. The two-child families and family ranking are important factors associated childhood trauma, while parental preference is related to anxiety and depression. These results highlight an urgent need to be addressed by adolescents' mental health service providers and policy-makers.

Abstract:Background Negative life events in early life have a cumulative effect on health trajectory changes in middle and old age, and some scholars have used life course theory as a guide to empirically explore the effect of childhood adversity or adverse experiences on depression in the elderly, but few study focuses on violence within the family. Objective To explore the influence mechanism of domestic violence experience on depression in later life in middle-aged and elderly people, and to provide academic support for the whole society to pay attention to good family function and intergenerational interaction, and to propose whole-life health promotion strategies. Participants and setting This paper selects the 2014 life course survey data and 2018 cross-sectional data of the China Health and Elderly Care Longitudinal Survey for analysis, and the research objects are middle-aged and elderly people aged 45 and above. Methods Based on a retrospective survey of 3008 middle-aged and elderly people, this study analyzed the influence path of domestic violence on depression level in childhood by using multiple mediation models, and used the Bootstrap method to test the significance of indirect effects. Results Based on controlling for gender, age, age square, household registration, marital status, community environment and education level, childhood domestic violence had a direct positive effect on depression level in the elderly ( P < 0.001), and childhood domestic violence also had an indirect effect on the depression level of the elderly through childhood health status, income logarithm and IADL ( P < 0.05). Conclusion As a life experience in early life, childhood domestic violence has a cumulative effect on depression in middle-aged and elderly people, is an important risk factor for depression, and has an important impact on mental health in later life.

Exposure to domestic violence and depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents: Sleep problems as a mediator

Abstract:Introduction: Exposure to domestic violence has been shown to be an important risk factor of depression in western studies, but has received less attention in Chinese context. Additionally, the underlying mechanism of its link with depression has not been fully studied. With a longitudinal design, we examined the mediating role of sleep problems between exposure to domestic violence and depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents, and further considered potential age and gender differences in the direct and indirect pathways. Methods: Participants were recruited from primary and junior high schools in China and were surveyed across two waves with a 6-month interval. There were 1949 participants at Wave 1 and 1283 at Wave 2. Structural equation model was conducted to examine the mediating role of sleep problems in the association between exposure to domestic violence and depressive symptoms. Multigroup analyses were applied to test potential age and gender differences in the process. Results: Participants' exposure to domestic violence predicted increasing sleep problems, which further predicted more depressive symptoms. Age and gender moderated the indirect pathway from exposure to domestic violence to depressive symptoms through sleep problems, such that the mediating effects of sleep problems were significantly stronger in early-age adolescents and girls than middle-age ones and boys. Implication: Parents should avoid the use of corporal punishment and protect their children from domestic violence. For adolescents who have underwent domestic violence, parents and clinicians might consider to decrease their depressive symptoms by ameliorating sleep problems, especially for the early-age adolescents and girls.
Childhood maltreatment and depressive disorders in Chinese children and adolescents: A population-based case-control study

Abstract:ObjectiveThe association between childhood maltreatment (CM) and clinically diagnosed depressive disorders (DD) in children and adolescents remains inconclusive, in large part due to a lack of high-quality epidemiological evidence. This study aimed to investigate the association between CM and DD in a large sample of Chinese children and adolescents.MethodsThe study subjects were chosen from the Mental Health Survey for Children and Adolescents in Yunnan (MHSCAY), and a population-based and individually-matched case-control study design was adopted.ResultsCM was in general associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 5.38 (95% CI: 3.33, 8.71) for DD in children and adolescents, and a prominent dose-response association was detected. For the five specific types of CM, emotional abuse was independently related to the highest odds of DD (OR=3.90, 95% CI: 2.75, 5.54), followed by physical neglect (OR=2.04, 95% CI: 1.45, 2.87) and physical abuse (OR=1.51, 95% CI: 1.06, 2.13), while insignificant associations were found between DDs and sexual abuse and emotional neglect. Subsequently performed stratified analyses identified noticeable effect modification by important demographic factors.ConclusionCM was significantly associated with increased risk of DD in Chinese children and adolescents. The major findings of the current study suggest that victims of CM, especially those who had been emotionally abused, were susceptible to early-onset DD. Targeted interventions should be considered.

Abstract:Background Comorbidity of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety is very common among children and adolescents. Few studies have examined how comorbid anxiety and depression are associated with health risk behaviors (HRBs) in adolescents, which could inform preventative approaches for mental health. Objective We evaluated the association between HRBs and comorbid anxiety and depression in a large adolescent cohort. Methods We used data from 22,868 adolescents in the National Youth Cohort (China). Anxiety and depression symptoms were assessed using the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire scale and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, respectively. Comorbidity was determined by the coexistence of anxiety and depression. HRBs including poor diet, smoking, physical inactivity, and poor sleep, as well as the above HRB scores, were added to obtain the total HRB score (HRB risk index). Based on single and total HRB scores, we divided participants into low-, medium-, and high-risk groups. Potential confounders included gender, presence of siblings, regional economic level, educational status, self-rated health, parental education level, self-reported family income, number of friends, learning burden, and family history of psychosis. Correlation analysis was used to explore associations between single risk behaviors. Binary logistic regression estimated the association between HRBs and anxiety-depression comorbidity before and after adjusting for potential confounders. Results The comorbidity rate of anxiety and depression among Chinese adolescents was 31.6% (7236/22,868). There was a statistically significant association between each HRB (P<.05), and HRBs were positively associated with comorbid anxiety and depression in the above population. For single HRBs, adolescents with poor diet, smoking, and poor sleep (medium-risk) were more prone to anxiety-depression comorbidity after adjusting for confounders compared to low-risk adolescents. However, adolescents with all high-risk HRBs were more likely to have comorbid anxiety and depression after adjusting for confounders (poor diet odds ratio [OR] 1.50, 95% CI 1.39-1.62; smoking OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.67-2.81; physical inactivity OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.06-1.28; poor sleep OR 1.84, 95% CI 1.70-2.01). Moreover, in both unadjusted (medium risk OR 1.79, 95% CI 1.56-2.05; high risk OR 3.09, 95% CI 2.72-3.52) and adjusted (medium risk OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.37-1.80; high risk OR 2.33, 95% CI 2.03-2.68) models, HRB risk index, like clustered HRBs, was positively associated with anxiety-depression comorbidity, and the strength of the association was stronger than for any single HRB. In addition, we found that compared to girls, the association between clustered HRBs and anxiety-depression comorbidity was stronger in boys after adjustment. Conclusions We provide evidence that HRBs are related to comorbid anxiety and depression. Interventions that decrease HRBs may support mental health development in adolescence, with the potential to improve health and well-being through to adulthood.

Abstract:Abstract Background Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms of adolescents not only affect youth but also have wide-ranging impacts on the health of adults. The study was carried out to determine the epidemiological characteristics of depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms and the associations between the two and health-risk behaviors in Chinese adolescents. Methods Participants were recruited from the junior and senior high schools in China. Data were collected by self-designed questionnaires. The questionnaires included questions about demographic characteristics, depressive symptom scales, anxiety symptom scales and nine categories of health-risk behaviors. Descriptive analysis and binary logistic regression were performed by SPSS 21.0 software. Results There were 4.4% of the participants with depressive symptoms. Approximately 32.0% of the participants had anxiety symptoms. Girls and general senior school students were risk factors for depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Conclusion Depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms were prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Their distribution was affected by certain health-risk behaviors. Multiple health-risk behaviors were associated with depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:A series of 28 cases with a moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity and intermetatarsal angle of 14° or greater was followed an average of 5½ years to determine whether any significant loss of correction occurred. All feet were treated with a distal soft tissue procedure and proximal metatarsal osteotomy. The average correction of the intermetatarsal angle was 13.2° (7–20°), and the average loss of correction was 1.4°; the average correction of the hallux valgus angle was 26.7° (−2° to 48°), and the average loss of correction was 3.8°. In three cases, a recurrent deformity developed; in three other cases, a hallux varus deformity developed, two of which were symptomatic. Patient satisfaction was 85%. This study indicates that in most patients with a hallux valgus deformity and an intermetatarsal angle of 14° or greater, there is sufficient inherent stability of the first metatarsocuneiform joint that it does not require stabilization to obtain a satisfactory long-term result.
