Abstract:The effect of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) temperature and bamboo hydrochar (BHC) addition on biogas production in anaerobic digestion of fish processing waste (FPW) was studied. HTC temperature (200-280 °C) had significant effects on methane yield and content, but the BHC had little effects. The maximum biogas yield observed with HTC at 200 °C and a BHC adding ratio of 1:2 (dry mass ratio of FPW to BHC) reached 292 L/kg volatile solids (VS), which were 64% higher than the control group with only FPW, with the maximum methane yield of 219 L/kg-VS and highest net methane energy yield of 3410 kJ/kg-VS. The obtained results can be used to design an efficient anaerobic digestion process for treating and effectively utilizing fish processing waste.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) provides a robust and eco‐friendly strategy for transforming wet biomass into biocoal, a renewable energy source that mimics the properties of lignite coal. This process, which does not require the drying of biomass, converts organic waste into valuable solid, liquid, and gaseous products under specific temperature and pressure conditions. It presents a significant advancement in sustainable waste management and energy production, demonstrating potential for broader adoption across various biomass types to enhance energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology emerges as a sustainable method to convert wet biomass, including food waste and municipal solid waste into high‐energy dense biocoal. This process, conducted at temperatures ranging from 180 to 260°C and pressures of 10–50 bar, effectively transforms the organic material in wet biomass into solid, liquid, and gaseous outputs. The solid product, biocoal, possesses a high carbon concentration and heating values on par with lignite coal, presenting a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Despite operational commercial‐scale HTC facilities globally, further adoption across various feedstocks can improve waste management and energy production. The process can achieve energy yields up to 80%, particularly at temperatures favoring the generation of secondary char with higher heating values. HTC not only aids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon sequestration in solid waste but also promotes environmental sustainability by yielding nutrient‐rich by‐products for agriculture. As a versatile and energy‐efficient solution, HTC technology is a pivotal innovation in waste‐to‐energy conversion, addressing the imperative for sustainable waste management. Other supplementary benefits are presented; they include higher employability, reduction of a nation's reliance on imported energy, and better waste control, therefore considering all pillars of sustainability. Future research should focus on optimizing process efficiency and exploring the broader applicability of HTC to various biomass feedstocks, enhancing its role in the global pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an effective way to harmlessly dispose municipal sludge (MS). This work comprehensively reviewed critical hydrothermal parameters of HTC, reaction mechanisms, physicochemical characteristics, applications of target products, technology coupling, energy balance, economic evaluation and life cycle analyses. The formation of hydrochar is predominantly attributed to the polymerization of remarkably reactive intermediates generated through the degradation of biopolymers in MS, as well as the solid-solid conversion of their insoluble components. Physicochemical properties of target products are closely related to process parameters and chemical compositions of MS, which provide a promising opportunity to acquire desired products by optimizing reaction conditions. The combination of other wastes with MS, and the coupling of different processes (e.g., pyrolysis) are potential optimization methods of HTC. The synergy of technological coupling enables the augmentation of value within the product. Typical energy balances of HTC indicate that net energy recovery exists even when the moisture content of municipal sludge is up to 91%. The combination of hydrochar as a substitute for fossil fuels and anaerobic digestion or recycling of process water is very favorable for the life cycle assessment of HTC of MS. Ultimately, some prospects for HTC of MS are highlighted.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) management poses significant challenges due to the generation of organic waste materials, including the under-sieve fraction (USF), which contains high moisture and organic content. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has emerged as a promising technology for converting USF into hydrochar (HC), a valuable energy-rich material with improved combustible properties. Despite the potential of HTC for waste valorization, comprehensive studies on the thermoecological cost (TEC) and environmental implications of applying HTC to USF are limited. In this study, a detailed analysis of the TEC associated with the HTC process applied to USF from MSW was conducted. The TEC assessment was conducted considering varying dilution ratios (DS/W), operational temperatures (180–220 °C), and reaction times (1–8 h) to evaluate the energy efficiency, resource utilization, and environmental impact of the HTC process. Comparative assessments were made with alternative USF treatment methods, such as bio-stabilization, landfilling, and wastewater treatment. The results indicate that the optimal conditions for minimizing TEC are a temperature of 180 °C, a reaction time of 1 h, and a dilution ratio of 0.15, achieving a TEC value of approximately 9.25 GJ per ton of USF. This represents a significant reduction compared to the conventional treatment methods, which showed a TEC of 14.9 GJ/ton of USF. This study provides a comprehensive comparison of HTC with alternative USF treatment methods, such as bio-stabilization and landfilling, highlighting HTC's superior energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. These findings offer valuable insights into the energy consumption, resource utilization, and environmental impact of HTC, emphasizing its potential for sustainable waste valorization.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) management has become a major concern for developing countries. The physical and chemical aspects of MSW management and infrastructure need to be analyzed critically to solve the existing socio-economic problem. Currently, MSW production is 2.01 billion tonnes/yr. In developing countries, improper management of MSW poses serious environmental and public health risks. Depending on the socio-economic framework of a country, several MSW management procedures have been established, including landfilling, thermal treatment, and chemical treatment. Most of the MSW produced in underdeveloped and developing countries such as Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan is dumped into open landfills, severely affecting the environment. Waste-to-Energy (WTE) projects based on thermal treatments, e.g., incineration, pyrolysis, and gasification, can be feasible alternatives to conventional technologies. This research has explored a comprehensive method to evaluate MSW characteristics and management strategies from a global and Bangladesh perspective. The benefits, challenges, economic analysis, and comparison of MSW-based WTE projects have been analyzed concisely. Implementing the WTE project in developing countries can reduce unsupervised landfill and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Alternative solutions and innovations have been discussed to overcome the high capital costs and infrastructural deficiencies. By 2050, Bangladesh can establish a total revenue (electricity sales and carbon credit revenue) of USD 751 million per year in Dhaka and Chittagong only. The landfill gas (LFG) recovery, waste recycling. and pyrolysis for energy production, syngas generation, and metal recovery are possible future directions of MSW management. The MSW management scenario in developing countries can be upgraded by improving waste treatment policies and working with government, academicians, and environmentalists together.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an attractive, green technology for the management of sewage sludge. In this study, low-value secondary sewage sludge was subjected to an HTC treatment in a 1 L batch hydrothermal reactor and transformed into a high-energy-density hydrochar under varying HTC conditions (temperature of 150–300 °C, carbonization time of 30–150 min and a solid loading of 10–30%). The resulting hydrochar fuel characteristics were analyzed for ultimate and proximate analyses, functional group composition and energetic parameters. It was found that the hydrochar yield decreased with the increasing HTC temperature and reaction time, primarily due to the loss of organic volatile matter and functional groups. Under the optimum conditions of 150 °C, 30 min of carbonization time and 30% solid loading, 80.56% of the hydrochar was recovered, providing a maximum energy yield of 90.32% and a high heating value of 18.49 MJ/kg. Compared to the raw sewage sludge (H/C ratio of 2.67 and O/C ratio of 0.51), the hydrochar also had lower H/C and O/C atomic ratios of 1.42 and 0.18, respectively. The results suggest that significant dehydration and decarboxylation during the HTC treatment of sewage sludge have resulted in the formation of carbonaceous hydrochar with energetic properties close to the sub-bituminous coals.

Abstract:Scientific disposal of sewage sludge (SS) is a tedious task worldwide. Landfilling of the SS after centrifugation may have serious adverse impacts on the environment. The present study investigated efficacy of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) as pretreatment for the centrifuged sewage sludge with an aim to improve resource recovery. In this study, both solid and liquid fractions recovered after the HTC were subjected to the detailed analysis for examining the opportunities for recovery of value-added chemicals and biogas. The HTC conditions were optimized using design of experiments (DOE) approach. The runs were performed in a high-pressure reactor at 160–240 °C temperatures and total pressures of 6.1–34.2 kg/cm 2 for 1–3 h duration without supply of air. The optimum HTC temperature and duration were found to be 200 °C and 1 h, respectively. Under these conditions, the dried hydrochar (HC) had higher heating value of ~13 MJ/kg. Its properties were found similar to that of the sub-bituminous coal based on the atomic ratio of elements. The HTC pretreatment resulted in substantial reduction in carbon and oxygen due to decarboxylation, dehydration and oxidation (due to oxygen present in reactor headspace) reactions. The process wastewater (PWW) recovered after HTC at the optimum conditions had high concentration of the recoverable value-added compounds such as humic acid (HA) and PO 4 3- -P (concentration = 20 g/l and ~0.5 g/l, respectively). Moreover, significant quantity of biogas could be generated from the PWW. Hence, hydrothermal pretreatment can be considered a potential option for SS valorization.

Abstract:The concept of a bio-based economy has been adopted by many advanced countries around the world, and thermochemical conversion of waste biomass is recognized as the most effective approach to achieve this objective. Recent studies indicate that hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising method for the conversion of waste biomass towards novel carbonaceous materials known as hydrochars. This cost-effective and eco-friendly process operates at moderate temperatures (180–280 °C) and uses water as a reaction medium. HTC has been successfully applied to a wide range of waste materials, including lignocellulose biomass, sewage sludge, algae, and municipal solid waste, generating desirable carbonaceous products. This review provides an overview of the key HTC process parameters, as well as the physical and chemical properties of the obtained hydrochar. It also explores potential applications of produced materials and highlights the modification and functionalization techniques that can transform these materials into game-changing solutions for a sustainable future.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) management is a global challenge, and its efficient treatment is critical to reducing environmental pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. MSW-to-energy systems have emerged as a promising solution for sustainable waste management. Hydrogen production from MSW offers several benefits, including reducing reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating climate change, and promoting circular economy principles. The main aim of this study is to design and model an innovative integrated energy system to convert an MSW stream to hydrogen in a multi-generation system. In this regard, a gas turbine cycle, a proton exchange membrane, and a supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle are integrated and produce hydrogen, power, oxygen, heated air, and heated water. Energy and environmental analyses are implemented on the system and its performance is multiobjectively optimized using the Taguchi technique and the signal to noise analysis. The contributions of the input variables on the system performance are evaluated using the analysis of variance. Municipal solid waste of 1.75 kg/min, inlet turbine temperature of 850 degrees C, and pressure ratio of 10 are recognized as the optimum conditions. The system produces 472 kW of power, 57.7 g/min of hydrogen, 458 g/min of oxygen, 480 m3/min of heated air, and 12.2 L/min of heated water in the optimum state. The system presents the efficiency of 79.3% and emits 8.32 g/kW.min of carbon dioxide.

Abstract:Sewage sludge management at wastewater treatment plants is becoming a more and more challenging task. Here, an innovative integrated modeling approach is developed to investigate the optimization of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) by the inclusion of hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). To this aim, two alternative plant layouts have been considered: (i) a conventional activated sludge-based treatment plant, i.e., based on thickening, stabilization, conditioning, and dewatering; (ii) additional hydrothermal carbonization and integrated treatment of the spent liquor in the sludge line. An Italian MWWTP has been selected as a case study, and three different scenarios have been implemented in the process simulation software World Wide Engine for Simulation Training and Automation (WEST) by considering the effect of the different digestion times in the aerobic reactor. Then, according to the Design of Experiment (DoE) methodology applied both on simulated and experimental data, and by the use of a Python code, the desired models have been developed and compared. Finally, a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study has been carried out to estimate the impacts on human health, ecosystems, and resources. The integration of HTC corresponds to the generation of a valuable product (the hydrochar), whereas the conventional layout is associated with high disposal costs of the sewage sludge. According to LCA results, a sludge age of 40 days is recommended due to the lowest impacts estimated, both with and without a HTC section. This has been ascribed mainly to the electricity demand of the sludge line, which increases with the excess sludge flow rate, i.e., as the sludge age decreases.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an energy-efficient thermochemical process for converting wet waste products into value added materials for water treatment. Understanding how HTC influences the physicochemical properties of the resultant materials is critical in optimizing the process for water treatment, where surface functionality and surface area play a major role. In this study, we have examined the HTC of four wet waste streams, sewage sludge, biosludge, fiber sludge, and horse manure at three different temperatures (180 °C, 220 °C, and 260 °C). The physicochemical properties of these materials were examined via FTIR, SEM and BET with their adsorption capacity were assessed using methylene blue. The yield of solid material after hydrothermal carbonization (hydrochar) decreased with increasing temperature for all samples, with the largest impact on horse manure and fiber sludge. These materials also lost the highest degree of oxygen, while HTC had minimal impact on biosludge and sewage sludge. The differences here were due to the varying compositions of each waste material, FTIR identified resonances related to cellulose in horse manure and fiber sludge, which were not detected in biosludge and sewage sludge. Adsorption capacities varied between 9.0 and 68 mg g −1 with biosludge HTC at 220 °C adsorbing the highest amount. Adsorption also dropped drastically at the highest temperature (260 °C), indicating a correlation between adsorption capacity and HTC conditions. This was attributed to the loss of oxygen functional groups, which can contribute to adsorption. These results suggest that adsorption properties can be tailored both by selection of HTC temperature and feedstock.

Abstract:Food waste digestate solids (FWDS) is the by-product of anaerobic digestion and it contains high moisture. Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has the ability to convert wet bio-waste to hydrochar, which is a potential technology for handling FWDS. This study investigates the effect of reaction temperature and residence time on solid and liquid products from HTC process of FWDS. The solid product was named as hydrochars, and their physicochemical characters were tested and compared. The results showed that temperature had a more significant effect on hydrochar properties, compared to residence time. The higher heating value of hydrochar was 15.46 MJ/kg and the yield was 49%, under reaction conditions of 260 degrees C and 60 min. It was also found that hydrochar generated at higher temperature had a more stable combustion, higher ignition temperature, higher burnout temperature. For liquid product, the main organic matter are pyridine derivatives, pyrazine derivatives, indole derivatives, cyclopentene derivatives and phenolic compounds. It was also discovered that the increase of temperature can significantly reduce the concentrations of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in liquid product. When reaction temperature increased from 220 degrees C to 260 degrees C, the COD decreased from 23,357 mg/L to 19,658 mg/L, TOC decreased from 9827 mg/L to 6352 mg/L, respectively. After HTC under the conditions of 260.C and 60 min, 67% of nitrogen in solid feedstock e migrated from to liquid product, and N-contained compounds decomposed into ammonia, while phosphorus was mainly remained in the solid phase (>90%), which mainly existed in the form of apatite.

Abstract:Waste-to-energy technologies are considered as one of the key waste treatment technologies due to their energy and heat recovery efficiencies from the waste. A number of research studies were accomplished to understand the potential environmental burdens from emerging waste treatment technologies such as pyrolysis–gasification (PG). The aim of this study was to examine the PG of municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment process through a life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The study also includes a comparative LCA model of PG and incineration to identify the potential environmental burdens from the existing (incineration) and emerging (PG) waste treatment technologies. This study focused on ten environmental impact categories under two different scenarios, namely: (a) LCA model of PG and (b) comparative LCA model of PG and incineration. The scenario (a) showed that PG had significant environmental burdens in the aquatic eco-toxicity and the global warming potential impact categories. The comparative scenario (b) of PG and incineration of MSW showed that PG had comparatively lower potential environmental burdens in acidification, eutrophication, and aquatic eco-toxicity. Both LCA models showed that the environmental burdens were mainly caused by the volume of the thermal gas (emissions) produced from these two technologies and the final residue to disposal. Therefore, the results indicate that the efficiency and environmental burdens of the emerging technologies are dependent on the emissions and the production of final residue to the landfill.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is an effective thermochemical and environmentally friendly process with potential to produce a solid fuel with a high energy density depending on the feedstock (type and solid content) and operational conditions used (temperature and residence time). This solid product could play an essential part in reducing dependency on fossil fuels and could have potential uses as a precursor for activated carbon to be used as an adsorbent (wastewater remediation and air purification), soil improver, in methane and hydrogen storage, catalyst support, and energy storage (Li/Na ion batteries, supercapacitors, and fuel cells). On the other hand, HTC generates an aqueous stream (process water), which contains high concentrations of organic matter and relative abundance of nutrients (N, P, and K). The HTC process water can be valorized by anaerobic digestion for methane production or be directly used as a fertilizer. This chapter collects the recent progress in HTC technology research, focused mainly on biomass residues and sewage sludge, and the potential application of the solid and aqueous phases.

Abstract:The management of solid waste poses a worldwide obstacle in the pursuit of a sustainable society. This issue has intensified with the increase in waste production caused by rapid population expansion, industrialization, and urbanization. The continuously growing volume of municipal solid waste, particularly the substantial volume of organic waste, along with improper disposal practices, results in the release of greenhouse gases and other harmful airborne substances which simultaneously causes health risks and socioeconomic concerns. This article examines various waste-to-energy (energy production in the form of heat and electricity) concepts as well as waste-to-materials (various value-added materials including biofuel, biochemical, char, bio-oil, soil fertilizer, etc.) methods of converting municipal solid waste into environmentally friendly fuels, which appear to be economically feasible and attractive. It starts with a thorough analysis of the characteristics of municipal solid waste followed by the generation procedure. The study provides an overview of different thermochemical conversion methods including incineration, pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis, liquefaction, hydrothermal carbonization, gasification, combustion for transformation of municipal solid waste, and their recent advancement. The review comprehensively discussed the pros and cons of each method highlighting their strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats to transforming MSW. The current state of municipal solid waste management, including effective dumping and deviation, is comprehensively assessed, along with the prospects and challenges involved. Energy justice concepts and fuzzy logic tool is used to address the selection criteria for choosing the best waste treatment techniques. Moreover, several recommendations are offered to enhance the existing solid waste management system. This review could assist scholars, researchers, authorities, and stakeholders in making informed decisions regarding MSW management.
Hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge for hydrochar production: optimization of operating conditions using Box-Behnken design coupled with response surface methodology

Abstract:Hydrochar was produced from sewage sludge via the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process. The effects of carbonization temperature (150–300 °C), solid load (10–30%), and reaction time (30–120 min) were investigated using response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken factorial design. The optimum operating conditions for hydrochar production were determined by maximizing three key responses: solid yield, higher heating value (HHV), and energy yield. The results showed that the HTC process increased the carbon content from 30.02 wt.% to 37.53 wt.% while decreasing the hydrogen content from 5.26 wt.% to 3.18 wt.% and oxygen content from 25.55 wt.% to 9.48 wt.%, affecting the HHV and energy yield of the hydrochar. As for the optimization, the findings indicate the suitability of a quadratic model, revealing the most favorable conditions to be the temperature of 150 °C, the solid load of 30%, and the reaction time of 30 min, resulting in hydrochar with a solid yield of 71.24%, an HHV of 17.90 MJ/kg, and an energy yield of 94.81%. Of all the process parameters, temperature had the most significant influence on all responses. Further characterization using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated enhanced conversion of sewage sludge to hydrochar, evidenced by a notable reduction in peak intensities of solid product compared to the parent material. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed structural and porosity changes in sewage sludge post-HTC treatment. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) indicated remarkable improvements in the combustion performance of hydrochar, including increased ignition temperature (241.91 °C) and burnout temperature (688 °C). The results of this optimization study offer valuable insights for the scalable implementation of the HTC process in efficiently producing solid fuel from sewage sludge.

Abstract:A thermochemical conversion method known as hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is appealing, because it may convert wet biomass directly into energy and chemicals without the need for pre-drying. The hydrochar solid product’s capacity to prepare precursors of activated carbon has attracted attention. HTC has been utilized to solve practical issues and produce desired carbonaceous products on a variety of generated wastes, including municipal solid waste, algae, and sludge in addition to the typically lignocellulose biomass used as sustainable feedstock. This study aims to assess the in-depth description of hydrothermal carbonization, highlighting the most recent findings with regard to the technological mechanisms and practical advantages. The process parameters, which include temperature, water content, pH, and retention time, determine the characteristics of the final products. The right setting of parameters is crucial, since it significantly affects the characteristics of hydrothermal products and opens up a range of opportunities for their use in multiple sectors. Findings reveal that the type of precursor, retention time, and temperature at which the reaction is processed were discovered to be the main determinants of the HTC process. Lower solid products are produced at higher temperatures; the carbon concentration rises, while the hydrogen and oxygen content declines. Current knowledge gaps, fresh views, and associated recommendations were offered to fully use the HTC technique's enormous potential and to provide hydrochar with additional useful applications in the future.

Abstract:Conventional activated sludge systems, still widely used to treat wastewater, produce large amounts of solid waste that is commonly landfilled or incinerated. This study addresses the potential use of Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC) to valorize sewage sludge residues examining the properties of hydrochars depending on HTC process conditions and sewage sludge withdrawal point. With increasing HTC severity (process residence time and temperature), solid yield, total Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and solid pH decrease while ash content increases. Hydrochars produced from primary (thickened) and secondary (digested and dewatered) sludge show peculiar distinct properties. Hydrochars produced from thickened sludge show good fuel properties in terms of Higher Heating Value (HHV) and reduced ash content. However, relatively high volatile matter and O:C and H:C ratios result in thermal reactivity significantly higher than typical coals. Both series of carbonized secondary sludges show neutral pH, low COD, enhanced phosphorous content and low heavy metals concentration: as a whole, they show properties compatible with their use as soil amendments.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration power generation is an important treatment technology, which has been widely concerned in recent years. It is of great significance to evaluate the environmental impact. This study conducted the environmental life cycle assessment of MSW incineration power plant in Yongcheng city, Henan province, China. After that, the comprehensive environmental impacts of MSW incineration power plant, landfill, and coal-fired power plant are compared. Furthermore, the energy conservation and emission reduction benefits brought by MSW incineration power plant in Yongcheng city are quantitatively analyzed. The results show that (1) the main environmental impact categories of MSW incineration power plant are human toxicity potential and acidification potential, which together account for 72.8% of the total comprehensive environmental impact. In addition, incineration is the main process of pollutant generation, which contributes 94.1% to the comprehensive environmental impact. (2) As an effective supplement to landfill and coal-fired power generation, MSW incineration power generation produces lower environmental impact. (3) Significant energy-saving and emission reduction benefits can be brought by MSW incineration power plant. Particularly, it could save energy 2.75×104 tce, reduce greenhouse gas emissions 3.43×105 t CO2-eq, and effectively reduce the emissions of various air pollutants for the local area annually.
