Abstract:<p>Carbon-based functional nanomaterials have attracted remarkable attention from the scientific community for their unique combinations of advantageous chemical and physical properties, such as superb electrical conductivity, excellent heat conductivity, chemical stability, advanced optical properties, and high mechanical strength. Our research group has been very actively involved in the study and further development of carbon-based functional nanomaterials and their potential applications for many years. In this feature article, we introduce our recent endeavors in the development of carbon-based nanomaterials with superior functionalities for potential application in diverse fields including solar thermal fuels, advanced thermal management, and electrochemical energy storage. The key design concepts of these advanced functional nanomaterials are highlighted, specific synthesis strategies are discussed, their potential usage in devices and applications is emphasized, and background information is succinctly furnished wherever warranted. We begin with an overview on the chemistry of carbon nanomaterials, in which the synthesis and chemical functionalization of carbon nanotubes and graphene are introduced, respectively. We then showcase the design, fabrication and properties of different functional carbon nanomaterials for diverse applications, including photoactive azobenzene/carbon nanomaterials for solar thermal fuels and light-driven carbon-based actuators, advanced carbon nanomaterials with directional thermal conductivity, and carbon-based electrodes for electrochemical energy storage. Finally, we conclude by briefly summarizing the advantages of the application of functional carbon-based nanomaterials in various fields, and list challenges that remain to be solved and potential that remains to be tapped.</p>

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials exhibit outstanding electrical and mechanical properties, but these superior properties are often compromised as nanomaterials are assembled into bulk structures. This issue of scaling limits the use of carbon nanostructures and can be attributed to poor physical contacts between nanostructures. To address this challenge, we propose a novel technique to build a 3D interconnected carbon matrix by forming covalent bonds between carbon nanostructures. High temperature Joule heating was applied to bring the carbon nanofiber (CNF) film to temperatures greater than 2500 K at a heating rate of 200 K/min to fuse together adjacent carbon nanofibers with graphitic carbon bonds, forming a 3D continuous carbon network. The bulk electrical conductivity of the carbon matrix increased four orders of magnitude to 380 S/cm with a sheet resistance of 1.75 Ω/sq. The high temperature Joule heating not only enables fast graphitization of carbon materials at high temperature, but also provides a new strategy to build covalently bonded graphitic carbon networks from amorphous carbon source. Because of the high electrical conductivity, good mechanical structures, and anticorrosion properties, the 3D interconnected carbon membrane shows promising applications in energy storage and electrocatalysis fields.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube functional materials (CNTFMs) represent an important research field in transforming nanoscience and nanotechnology into practical applications, with potential impact in a wide realm of science, technology, and engineering. In this review, we combine the state-of-the-art research activities of CNTFMs with the application prospect, to highlight critical issues and identify future challenges. We focus on macroscopic long fibers, thin films, and bulk sponges which are typical CNTFMs in different dimensions with distinct characteristics, and also cover a variety of derived composite/hierarchical materials. Critical issues related to their structures, properties, and applications as robust conductive skeletons or high-performance flexible electrodes in mechanical and electronic devices, advanced energy conversion and storage systems, and environmental areas have been discussed specifically. Finally, possible solutions and directions are proposed for overcoming current obstacles and promoting future efforts in the field.

Abstract:A new group of nanomaterials, in free-standing form, such as fiber/yarns, paper/ sheet and bulk, made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), has emerged in recent years. These materials have shown special and unique mechanical, thermal and electrical properties, with potential applications in various aspects. This chapter is aimed to summarize the significant progress that has been made and the importance of potential applications of these carbon nanomaterials. Abstract:Since the discovery of buckyballs in 1985, the family of carbon materials has been rapidly growing. From zero-dimensional (0D) fullerene, 1D carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and recent 2D graphene to traditional 3D nanoporous carbon and nanodiamond, carbon nanomaterials exhibit a variety of structures and forms due to the existence of three hybridization forms, namely, sp3, sp2, and sp1, of carbon atoms. In recent years, they have increasingly gained interests from both scientific and industrial communities due to the unique physical and chemical properties. They show diverse potential applications in structure, electronics, energy, environment, water, and others. The purpose of this special issue is to report some latest research results on synthesis, characterization, and applications of carbon nanomaterials and related nanostructures. The accepted papers cover various carbon materials, namely, CNTs, graphene, carbon nanofibers, nanodiamonds, amorphous carbon films, carbon nanocomposite, graphite-like layered materials, and so on. These papers cover a wide range of topics related to synthesis and applications of these carbon nanomaterials in mechanics and tribology, thermal management, energy conversion (photoelectronic devices, solar cells, and photocatalysis), energy storage (lithium-ion batteries), and drug delivery fields. Moreover, two papers present theoretical calculation of carbon nanomaterials in electronic, optical, and surface adsorption properties using density functional theory.

Abstract:Recently, carbon nanomaterials have received great interest because of their unique mechanical, electrical, and chemical properties. Especially, some kinds of novel carbon materials including carbon nanofibers, carbon nanotubes, and graphene with large specific area, high conductivity, and good biocompatibility become research focus. These novel carbon nanomaterials have been applied in many fields due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Especially, carbon nanomaterials have shown their unique advantages in electrochemical field. This paper mainly review the application of carbon nanomaterials to electrochemistry including biosensor, supercapacitor, and fuel cell. Carbon nanomaterials have an important role in bioelectrochemical catalytic reaction due to that carbon nanomaterials have high specific area and excellent biocompatibility. Therefore, it can improve the electron transfer rate of enzyme. The biosensors based carbon nanomaterials have high sensitivity, broad linear range, and good stability and reproducibility. Carbon nanomaterial is the earlist and the best one in the supercapacitor electrode, materials. The supercapacitor prepared by carbon nanomaterials has good cycle stability. The specific capacitance can be enhanced through the combination of carbon nanomaterials and pseudo-capacitors electrode materials. Carbon nanomaterials can act as the catalysts of fuel cell as well. It can improve the energy density, fuel utilization, and the ability to resist poisoning.

Abstract:Carbon Nanotube (CNT), for its excellent mechanical, electrical properties and nano size, large special surface physical property, become the most promising material. But carbon nanotube can still fabricated in micro dimension, and can't be made into macro size, so to the carbon nanotube filled composite can't explore the properties of the CNT. Carbon nano-paper is made of pure CNT, with micro pore, and it turn micro sized CNT into macro shaped membrane. Based on the piezo-resistivity and electrical conductivity of the carbon nano-paper, we used the carbon nano-paper as functional layers fabricate functional composite, and studies its strain sensing, composite material deicing and shape memory polymer (SMP) material electric actuation performance. The results shown that the resin can pregnant the nano paper, and there was good bond for nano paper and composite. The functional composite can monitoring the strain with high sensitivity comparing to foil strain gauge. The functional composite can be heated via the carbon nano paper with low power supply and high heating rate. The composite has good deicing and heat actuation performance to composite material. For the good strain sensing, electric conductivity and self-heating character of the carbon nano-paper composite, it can be used for self sensing, anti lightning strike and deicing of composite materials in aircrafts and wind turbine blades.

Abstract:The versatility of the arrangement of C atoms with the formation of different allotropes and phases has led to the discovery of several new structures with unique properties. Carbon nanomaterials are currently very attractive nanomaterials due to their unique physical, chemical, and biological properties. One of these is the development of superconductivity, for example, in graphite intercalated superconductors, single-walled carbon nanotubes, B-doped diamond, etc. Not only various forms of carbon materials but also carbon-related materials have aroused extraordinary theoretical and experimental interest. Hybrid carbon materials are good candidates for high current densities at low applied electric fields due to their negative electron affinity. The right combination of two different nanostructures, CNF or carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles, has led to some very interesting sensors with applications in electrochemical biosensors, biomolecules, and pharmaceutical compounds. Carbon materials have a number of unique properties. In order to increase their potential application and applicability in different industries and under different conditions, they are often combined with other types of material (most often polymers or metals). The resulting composite materials have significantly improved properties.

Abstract:Most products today have several functions, but these are achieved by integrating different monofunctional devices and/or materials in a system. Having several functions simultaneously in one single material has many potential advantages, such as a structural material that can also store energy, have self-sensing or self-healing capability or any other physical function. This would lead mass and resource savings, being more energy efficient and thus more sustainable. This paper presents a mini review on how carbon fibres can be used for integrating several functions simultaneously in a high-performance load carrying structural material using the electrical and electrochemical properties of carbon fibres. Through this carbon fibre composites can also store energy like a lithium-ion battery, be used as a strain sensor, have electrically controlled actuation and shape-morphing, and be used as an energy harvester.

Abstract:Two-dimensional network-structured carbon nanoscale building blocks, going beyond graphene, are of fundamental importance, and creating such structures and developing their applications have broad implications in environment, electronics and energy. Here, we report a facile route, based on electro-spraying/netting, to self-assemble two-dimensional carbon nanostructured networks on a large scale. Manipulation of the dynamic ejection, deformation and assembly of charged droplets by control of Taylor cone instability and micro-electric field, enables the creation of networks with characteristics combining nanoscale diameters of one-dimensional carbon nanotube and lateral infinity of two-dimensional graphene. The macro-sized (meter-level) carbon nanostructured networks show extraordinary nanostructural properties, remarkable flexibility (soft polymeric mechanics having hard inorganic matrix), nanoscale-level conductivity, and outstanding performances in distinctly different areas like filters, separators, absorbents, and wearable electrodes, supercapacitors and cells. This work should make possible the innovative design of high-performance, multi-functional carbon nanomaterials for various applications.

Abstract:Soft electronics are garnering significant attention due to their wide‐ranging applications in artificial skin, health monitoring, human‐machine interaction, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. Various soft physical sensors such as mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and humidity sensors are the fundamental building blocks for soft electronics. While the fast growth and widespread utilization of electronic devices have elevated the life quality, the consequential electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radiation pose potential threats to device precision and human health. Another substantial concern pertains to overheating issues that occur during prolonged operation. Therefore, the design of multifunctional soft electronics exhibiting excellent capabilities in sensing, EMI shielding, and thermal management is of paramount importance. Because of the prominent advantages in chemical stability, electrical and thermal conductivity, and easy functionalization, new carbon materials including carbon nanotubes, graphene and its derivatives, graphdiyne, and sustainable natural‐biomass derived carbon are particularly promising candidates for multifunctional soft electronics. This review summarizes the latest advancements in multifunctional soft electronics based on new carbon materials across a range of performance aspects, mainly focusing on the structure or composite design, and fabrication method on the physical signals monitoring, EMI shielding, and thermal management. Furthermore, the device integration strategies and corresponding intriguing applications are highlighted. Finally, this review presents prospects aimed at overcoming current barriers and advancing the development of state‐of‐the‐art multifunctional soft electronics. Abstract:Carbon-based nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, carbon nanospheres, and carbon nanofibers, are becoming a research hotspot due to their unique structure and good mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and chemical properties. With the development of material synthesis technology, they can be functionalized and used in various fields such as energy, environment, and biomedicine. In particular, stimuli-responsive carbon-based nanomaterials have stood out in recent years because of their smart behavior. Researchers have applied carbon-based nanomaterials to different disease treatments based on their stimulus-response properties. In this paper, based on stimuli-responsive carbon-based nanomaterials’ morphology, we categorize them into carbon nanotubes, carbon nanospheres, and carbon nanofibers according to their morphology. Then, their applications in probes, bioimaging, tumor therapy, and other fields are discussed. Finally, we address the advantages and disadvantages of carbon-based stimuli-responsive nanomaterials and discuss their future perspective.

Abstract:Optimizing Carbon Nanotubes Shorter carbon nanotubes are easier to make, but, when assembled into fibers, the resulting fiber properties are much poorer than might be predicted by theory. Conversely, longer carbon nanotubes have much better properties but are harder to process. Behabtu et al. (p. 182 ) combined the best of both worlds through scalable wet spinning method, in which they dissolved longer carbon nanotubes and then spun them into fibers that showed excellent strength, stiffness, and thermal conductivity.
