Abstract:Gigahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy of macromolecules in aqueous environments provides an important approach for identifying their global and transient molecular structures, as well as directly assessing hydrogen-bonding. We report dielectric properties of zwitterionic dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles in aqueous solutions over a wide frequency range, from 50 MHz to 1.12 THz. The dielectric relaxation spectra reveal different polarization mechanisms at the molecular level, reflecting the complexity of DPC micelle-water interactions. We have made a deconvolution of the spectra into different components and combined them with the effective-medium approximation to separate delicate processes of micelles in water. Our measurements demonstrate reorientational motion of the DPC surfactant head groups within the micelles, and two levels of hydration water shells, including tightly- and loosely-bound hydration water layers. From the dielectric strength of bulk water in DPC solutions, we found that the number of waters in hydration shells is approximately constant at 950 +/- 45 water molecules per micelle in DPC concentrations up to 400 mM, and it decreases after that. At terahertz frequencies, employing the effective-medium approximation, we estimate that each DPC micelle is surrounded by a tightly-bound layer of 310 +/- 45 water molecules that behave as if they are an integral part of the micelle. Combined with molecular dynamics simulations, we determine that tightly-bound waters are directly hydrogen-bonded to oxygens of DPC, while loosely-bound waters reside within 4 A of micellar atoms. The dielectric response of DPC micelles at terahertz frequencies yields, for the first time, experimental information regarding the largest-scale, lowest frequency collective motions in micelles.

In-plane dielectric constant and conductivity of confined water

Abstract:Water is essential for almost every aspect of life on our planet and, unsurprisingly, its properties have been studied in great detail. However, disproportionately little remains known about the electrical properties of interfacial and strongly confined water where its structure deviates from that of bulk water, becoming distinctly layered. The structural change is expected to affect water's conductivity and particularly its polarizability, which in turn modifies intermolecular forces that play a crucial role in many physical and chemical processes. Here we use scanning dielectric microscopy to probe the in-plane electrical properties of water confined between atomically flat surfaces separated by distances down to 1 nm. For confinement exceeding a few nm, water exhibits an in-plane dielectric constant close to that of bulk water and its proton conductivity is notably enhanced, gradually increasing with decreasing water thickness. This trend abruptly changes when the confined water becomes only a few molecules thick. Its in-plane dielectric constant reaches giant, ferroelectric-like values of about 1,000 whereas the conductivity peaks at a few S/m, close to values characteristic of superionic liquids. We attribute the enhancement to strongly disordered hydrogen bonding induced by the few-layer confinement, which facilitates both easier in-plane polarization of molecular dipoles and faster proton exchange. This insight into the electrical properties of nanoconfined water is important for understanding many phenomena that occur at aqueous interfaces and in nanoscale pores.

Abstract:Solid-Liquid Interfaces (SLIs) hold immense significance in various areas such as materials science, chemistry, physics, biology and medicine [1]. Many studies aim to decipher the molecular details of SLIs through analytical, computational or experimental methods [2]-[3], each optimized for different aspects of SLIs. Analytical methods are mainly based on the mean field approximation and work best for dilute solutions. Computational methods are bound by their maximum accessible time and length scales, while the limitation of experimental approach tend to lie in minimum values accessible of these scales. The concomitant deployment of both the approaches is a powerful tool in studying SLIs. In the current study both the computational and experimental tools are employed to study the interface of silica with aqueous saline solutions under electric fields. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation are utilized to investigate the relative response of the ions and waters exposed to an external AC field in a nanoscale silica-elecrolyte-gold system. Complementary experimental measurements are conducted with atomic force microscopy (AFM) which measures the dielectric force exerted on the nanoscale AFM probe. The impact of external factors such as salt concentration, AC voltage frequency and the system size is systematically investigated. Simulations reveal both the transient and stable response of water and ions as the main component of the system to the AC field. In the transient response, the water electric dipole increases monotonically with the voltage at the first cycle while it takes longer for ions to react to the field, limited by their diffusion time. When the ionic response becomes large enough to screen the field, the dipole moment of water molecules decreases and lead the phase of the applied field. The lag in the ionic response is owing to the time required for the ionic diffusion, while the lead in the water response is due to ionic lag. To obtain the stable response through MD simulation, Fourier transform was deployed with the results showing that electric dipole of ions and water have a periodic behavior with a frequency similar to the AC field and waters in lead and ions in lag. The dipole-voltage plots for ions and waters depicted an energy transfer between water and ions in each cycle. Decreasing the frequency to 10MHz, no energy exchange was observed concomitant to the removal of water lead. Besides, in the frequency range of 100MHz-200MHz in which the water phase lead reaches its maximum value, there is also a maximum in the energy exchange. Thus, there is a direct relation between the water-ion energy exchange and lead in the water response. The stable response is affected by various factors including the separation distance between the surfaces, the ionic concentration and the AC frequency. The MD observations of a decrease in the water lead and ionic lag with reducing the electrolyte gap could explain AFM measurements where the dielectric force appears to decrease for small gaps, a counter-intuitive result if bulk electrolyte properties are assumed. The simulation results also show that the sum of the electric dipole of water and ions is always in phase with the applied voltage implying that the field is totally screened by the combination of both of them. To provide the same amount of screening in larger separation distance the electric dipole of ions has to increase to counteract its larger lag which is observed in the ionic dipole values. As the ionic dipole despite water molecules are caused by translational entropy, larger ionic dipole translates to larger forces which is observed in the AFM experiments. [1] Taketoshi et al. Water Compression Induced Ionic Negative Differential Resistance in Nanopores.

Abstract:The mass transport behavior through nanoscale channels, greatly influenced by the structures and dynamics of nanoconfined water, plays an essential role in many biophysical processes. However, the dynamics of nanoconfined water under an external field and its effects are still not fully understood. Here, on the basis of molecular dynamics simulations, we theoretically show that the ionic current of [Bmim][PF6] through narrow pores in graphene membrane exhibits an ionic negative differential resistance effect-the ionic current decreases as the voltage increases over a certain threshold. This effect arises from the violation of traditional fluid dynamics as the assumption of continuity and homogeneity of fluids is no longer effective in ultrathin nanopores. The gradient of electric field around the atomic-thin layer produces a strong gradient force on the polarized water inside the nanopore. This dielectrophoretically compressed water leads to a hydrostatic force that repels ions from entering the nanopore. Our findings may advance the understanding of hydrostatic mechanism, which governs ion transport through nanopores.
Dielectric anisotropy in polar solvents under external fields

Abstract:We investigate dielectric saturation and increment in polar liquids under external fields. We couple a previously introduced dipolar solvent model to a uniform electric field and derive the electrostatic kernel of interacting dipoles. This procedure allows an unambiguous definition of the liquid dielectric permittivity embodying non-linear dielectric response and correlation effects. We find that the presence of the external field results in a dielectric anisotropy characterized by a two-component dielectric permittivity tensor. The increase of the electric field amplifies the permittivity component parallel to the field direction, i.e. dielectric increment is observed along the field. However, the perpendicular component is lowered below the physiological permittivity , indicating dielectric saturation perpendicular to the field. By comparison with Molecular Dynamics simulations from the literature, we show that the mean-field level dielectric response theory underestimates dielectric saturation. The inclusion of dipolar correlations at the weak-coupling level intensify the mean-field level dielectric saturation and improves the agreement with simulation data at weak electric fields. The correlation-corrected theory predicts as well the presence of a metastable configuration corresponding to the antiparallel alignment of dipoles with the field. This prediction can be verified by solvent-explicit simulations where solvent molecules are expected to be trapped transiently in this metastable state.

Abstract:The origin of the anomalous low value of the static dielectric constant (SDC) of confined water has been addressed and unearthed. While the low value is partly due to the different dielectric boundaries, a significant role is played by the "electrically dead layer" (EDL). As the observed dielectric constant is the harmonic mean of the grid-wise SDCs, the first layer, having the smallest SDC, makes a disproportionately large contribution. This enhanced contribution, in turn, arises from the orientationally ordered surface water molecules. They exhibit reduced fluctuations in collective dipole moment, as the molecules remain partly caged due to water–surface interactions. This phenomenon is found to be universal. We study the structure and dynamics of the water molecules which characterize the EDL. Frequency and field-dependent response of confined electrolytes from Brownian dynamics simulations

Abstract:Using Brownian dynamics simulations, we investigate the effects of confinement, adsorption on surfaces and ion-ion interactions on the response of confined electrolyte solutions to oscillating electric fields in the direction perpendicular to the confining walls. Nonequilibrium simulations allow to characterize the transitions between linear and nonlinear regimes when varying the magnitude and frequency of the applied field but the linear response, characterized by the frequency-dependent conductivity, is more efficiently predicted from the equilibrium current fluctuations. To that end, we (rederive and) use the Green-Kubo relation appropriate for overdamped dynamics, which differs from the standard one for Newtonian or underdamped Langevin dynamics. This expression highlights the contributions of the underlying Brownian fluctuations and of the interactions of the particles between them and with external potentials. While already known in the literature, this relation has rarely been used to date, beyond the static limit to determine the effective diffusion coefficient or the DC conductivity. The frequency-dependent conductivity always decays from a bulk-like behavior at high frequency to a vanishing conductivity at low frequency due to the confinement of the charge carriers by the walls. We discuss the characteristic features of the crossover between the two regimes, most importantly how the crossover frequency depends on the confining distance and the salt concentration, and the fact that adsorption on the walls may lead to significant changes both at high- and low-frequencies. Conversely, our results illustrate the possibility to obtain information on diffusion between walls, charge relaxation and adsorption by analyzing the frequency-dependent conductivity.

Water in an electric field does not dance alone: The relation between equilibrium structure, time dependent viscosity and molecular motions

Abstract:Dynamic structuring of water is a key player in a large class of processes underlying biochemical and technological developments today, the latter often involving electric fields. However, the anisotropic coupling between the water structure and the field has not been understood on a molecular level so far. Here we perform extensive molecular dynamics simulations to explore the influence of an externally imposed electric field on liquid water under ambient conditions. Using self-developed analysis tools and rigorous statistical analysis, we unambiguously show that water hydration shells break into subcompartments, which were hitherto not observed due to radial averaging. The shape of subcompartments is sensitive to the field magnitude, and affects excitations of the hydrogen bond network including the femtosecond stretching and the sub-picosecond restructuring of hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, by analysing the reorientational dynamics of water molecules, we ascertain the existence of cooperative excitations of small water clusters. Enabled by the interplay between hydrogen bonding, and the coupling of water dipoles to the field, these coordinated motions, occurring on the picosecond time scale, are associated with fluctuations between torque-free states of water dipoles. We show that unlike the coupling between translation and reorientation of water molecules, which takes place on even longer time scales, these coordinated motions are the key for understanding the emergent anisotropy of diffusion and viscosity of water. Particular effort is invested to provide an analysis that allows for future experimental validation.

Understanding the anomalously low dielectric constant of confined water: an ab initio study

Abstract: Recent experiments have shown that the out-of-plane dielectric constant of water confined in nanoslits of graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is vanishingly small. Despite extensive effort based mainly on classical force-field molecular dynamics (FFMD) approaches, the origin of this phenomenon is under debate. Here we used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) and AIMD-trained machine learning potentials to explore the structure and electronic properties of water confined inside graphene and hBN slits. We found that the reduced dielectric constant arises mainly from the anti-parallel alignment of the water dipoles in the perpendicular direction to the surface in the first two water layers near the solid interface. Although the water molecules retain liquid-like mobility, the interfacial layers exhibit a net ferroelectric ordering and constrained hydrogen-bonding orientations which lead to much reduced polarization fluctuations in the out-of-plane direction at room temperature. Importantly, we show that this effect is independent of the distance between the two confining surfaces of the slit, and it originates in the spontaneous polarization of interfacial water. Our calculations also show no significant variations in the structure and polarization of water near graphene and hBN, despite their different electronic structures. These results are important as they offer new insight into a property of water that plays a critical role in the long-range interactions between surfaces, the electric double-layer formation, ion solvation and transport, as well as biomolecular functioning.

Abstract:Fundamental studies of the dielectrics of confined water are critical to understand the ion transport across biological and synthetic nanochannels. The relevance of these fundamental studies, however, surmounts the difficulty of probing water's dielectric constant as a function of a fine variation in confinement. In this work, we explore the computational efficiency of machine learning potentials to derive the confinement effects on the dielectric constant, polarization, and dipole moment of water. Our simulations predict an enhancement of the axial dielectric constant of water under extreme confinement, arising from either the formation of ferroelectric structures of ordered water or larger dipole fluctuations facilitated by the disruption of water's H-bond network. Our study highlights the impact of hydrophobic nanoconfinement on the dielectric constant and on the ionic and electronic structure of water molecules, pointing to the importance of geometric flexibility and electronic polarizability to properly model confinement effects on water.
Redefining the dielectric response of nanoconfined liquids: insights from water

Abstract:Recent experiments show that the relative dielectric constant $\epsilon$ of water confined to a film of nanometric thickness reaches a strikingly low value of 2.1, barely above the bulk's 1.8 value for the purely electronic response. We argue that $\epsilon$ is not a well-defined measure for dielectric properties at sub-nanometer scales due to the ambiguous definition of confinement width. Instead we propose the 2D polarisability $\alpha_{\perp}$ as the appropriate, well-defined response function whose magnitude can be directly obtained from both measurements and computations. Our molecular-dynamics computations based on density-functional theory and empirical force fields reproduce the previously reported low dielectric response of confined water, and importantly predict a very significant reduction, $\sim 30$\%, of the electronic response as compared with the bulk's, contrary to what is widely assumed, highlighting the importance of electronic degrees of freedom to interpret the dielectric response of polar fluids under nanoconfinement rconditions.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were used extensively in the last decades to study the influence of an external electric field on many physical processes in water, including mobility of ions, field-induced vaporisation, and electrowetting. In most of these studies, the electric field was applied as an external force to all atoms in the simulation. While such an approach is intuitive and straightforward, it neither captures the shielding of the electric field by water nor any interfacial effect. The Constant Electrode Potential Method (CPM) allows for an external electric field to be applied on a system level, resembling experimental settings and accounting for shielding effects by water. In this work, the CPM method has been implemented to study the influence of an external electric field on the surface tension of water and to compare that to the conventional method, in addition to computing the interfacial mobilities of Na+ and Cl− ions at a liquid–vapor interface. The two approaches yield a similar trend of surface tension variation with the electric field. The CPM method predicts a weaker variation in the surface tension in comparison to that of the conventional method, with the maximum reported difference being 36% of the surface tension value.

Abstract:Using molecular dynamics simulations we study the dynamics of a water-like TIP5P model of water in hydrophilic and hydrophobic confinement. We find that in case of extreme nanocofinement such that there is only one molecular layer of water between the confinement surface, the dynamics of water remains Arrhenius with a very high activation energy up to high temperatures. In case of polar (hydrophilic) confinement, The intermediate time scale dynamics of water is drastically modified presumably due to the transient coupling of dipoles with the effective electric field due to the surface charges. Specifically, we find that in the presence of the polar surfaces, the dynamics of monolayer water shows anomalous region -- namely the lateral mean square displacement displays a distinct superdiffusive intermediate time scale behavior in addition to ballistic and diffusive regimes. We explain these finding by proposing a simple model. Furthermore, we find that confinement and the surface polarity changes the vibrational density of states specifically we see the enhancement of the low frequency collective modes in confinement compared to bulk water. Finally, we find that the length scale of translational-orientational coupling increases with the strength of the polarity of the surface.

Abstract:Abstract Water phase-change is of importance to many applications including energy conversion, thermal management of electronics, and medical therapies. Augmenting the rate of phase-change by application of an electric field is of interest in many situations and may lead to increased effectiveness of energy transfer. Thus, it is important to develop a better understanding of the effect of an electric field on the thermodynamic properties of water. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) was utilized to assess two distinct water models, the TIP4P-Ew and the SWM4-NDP, for predicting the effect of an electric field on the density and the enthalpy of vaporization of water. Both water models possess rigid molecular geometry. However, the SWM4-NDP model has a negatively charged Drude particle (the “NDP”) attached to the oxygen site in the water molecule, making the SWM4-NDP model polarizable. The objective is to understand if the polarizability of the water model has a significant effect when predicting the two properties of interest. Applying an electric field in MD simulations with each water model resulted in increased values for both the density and enthalpy of vaporization. The magnitude of these increases is comparable between water models and grows with applied field strength. Corresponding electrostriction pressure attributed to the applied field is well below values predicted by analytical models.

Abstract:There is a long-standing question about the molecular configuration of interfacial water molecules in the proximity of solid surfaces, particularly carbon atoms which play a crucial role in electrochemistry and biology. In this study, the dielectric, structural and dynamical properties of confined water placed between two parallel graphene walls at different inter distances from the Angstrom scale to few tens of nanometer have been investigated using molecular dynamics. For dielectric properties of water, we show that the perpendicular component of water dielectric constant drastically decreases under sub $2\; nm$ spatial confinement. The achieved dielectric constant data through linear response and fluctuation-dissipation theory, are consistent with recent reported experimental results. By determining the charge density as well as fluctuations in the number of atoms, we provide a molecular rationale for the behavior of perpendicular dielectric response function. We also interpret the behavior of the dielectric response in terms of the presence of dangling O-H bonds of waters. By examining the residence time and lateral diffusion constant of water under confinement, we reveal that the water molecules tend to keep their hydrogen bond networks at the interface of water-graphene. We also found consistency between lateral diffusion and z-component of variance in the center of mass of the system as a function of confinement.

Abstract:This study utilizes molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and continuum frameworks to explore electroosmotic flow (EOF) in nanoconfined aqueous electrolytes, offering a promising alternative to conventional micro-/nanofluidic systems. Although osmotic behavior in these environments is deeply linked to local fluid properties and interfacial dynamics between the fluid and electrolyte solutions, achieving a complete molecular-level understanding has remained challenging. The findings establish a linear relationship between electric field strength and fluid velocity, uncovering two distinct transport regimes separated by a critical threshold, with a markedly intensified flow in the second regime. It is demonstrated that rising electric field strengths significantly enhance water diffusion coefficients, supported by a detailed analysis of fluid hydration structures, the potential of mean force (PMF), and local stress tensors. Due to the applied electric field strength, the motion of ions and water accelerates, leading to the redistribution of ions and intensification of electrostatic forces. This expands the thickness of the electric double layer (EDL) and amplifies fluid diffusivity, thereby enhancing nanoscale fluid activity. These insights enhance the molecular-level understanding of EOF and define the stability of flow regimes, providing valuable guidelines for advancing nanofluidic technologies, such as drug delivery systems and lab-on-a-chip devices.
Interfacial versus confinement effects in the anisotropic frequency-dependent dielectric, THz and IR response of nanoconfined water

Abstract:We investigate the anisotropic frequency-dependent dielectric, THz and IR response of water confined between two planar graphene sheets with force-field and density-functional-theory-based molecular dynamics simulations. Using spatially resolved anisotropic spectra, we demonstrate the critical role of the volume over which the spectral response is integrated when reporting spatially averaged electric susceptibilities. To analyze the spectra, we introduce a unique decomposition into bulk, interfacial, and confinement contributions, which reveals that confinement effects on the spectra occur only for systems with graphene separation below 1.4 nm, for all frequencies. Based on this decomposition, we discuss the molecular origin of the main absorption features of nanoconfined water from the GHz to the IR regime. We show that, at low frequencies, the 15 GHz Debye peak of interfacial water is red-shifted due to a slowdown of collective water reorientations. At high frequencies the OH stretch at 100 THz blue shifts and a signature of free OH groups emerges, while the HOH bend mode at 50 Thz is red-shifted. Strikingly, in nanoconfinement, the 20 THz libration band shifts to below 15 THz and broadens drastically, spanning two orders of magnitude in frequency. These results are rationalized by the collective water motion and the structure of the hydrogen-bond network at the water-graphene interface and in two-dimensional water layers, which reveals the intricate behavior of nanoconfined water and its spectral properties.

Abstract:The effects of static electric field on the dynamics of lysozyme and its hydration water have been investigated by means of incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). Measurements were performed on lysozyme samples, hydrated respectively with heavy water (D2O) to capture the protein dynamics, and with light water (H2O), to probe the dynamics of the hydration shell, in the temperature range from 210 $<$ T $<$ 260 K. The hydration fraction in both cases was about $\sim$ 0.38 gram of water per gram of dry protein. The field strengths investigated were respectively 0 kV/mm and 2 kV/mm (2 10$^6$ V/m) for the protein hydrated with D2O and 0 kV and 1 kV/mm for the H2O hydrated counterpart. While the overall internal protons dynamics of the protein appears to be unaffected by the application of electric field up to 2 kV/mm, likely due to the stronger intra-molecular interactions, there is also no appreciable quantitative enhancement of the diffusive dynamics of the hydration water, as would be anticipated based on our recent observations in water confined in silica pores under field values of 2.5 kV/mm. This may be due to the difference in surface interactions between water and the two adsorption hosts (silica and protein), or to the existence of a critical threshold field value Ec $\sim$ 2-3 kV/mm for increased molecular diffusion, for which electrical breakdown is a limitation for our sample.
Mobility of nanometer-size solutes in water driven by electric field

Abstract:We investigate the mobility of nanometer-size solutes in water in a uniform external electric field. General arguments are presented to show that a closed surface cutting a volume from a polar liquid will carry an effective non-zero surface charge density when preferential orientation of dipoles exists in the interface. This effective charge will experience a non-vanishing drag in an external electric field even in the absence of free charge carriers. Numerical simulations of model solutes are used to estimate the magnitude of the surface charge density. We find it to be comparable to the values typically reported from the mobility measurements. Hydrated ions can potentially carry a significant excess of the effective charge due to over-polarization of the interface. As a result, the electrokinetic charge can significantly deviate from the physical charge of free charge carriers. We propose to test the model by manipulating the polarizability of hydrated semiconductor nanoparticles with light. The inversion of the mobility direction can be achieved by photoexcitation, which increases the nanoparticle polarizability and leads to an inversion of the dipolar orientations of water molecules in the interface.

Abstract:In this manuscript, we explore the electrostatic environment of the interface between a solid and a dilute electrolyte solution, with an emphasis on the electric field profiles that these systems produce. We review the theoretical formalism that connects electrostatic potential profiles, electric field profiles, and charge density fields. This formalism has served as the basis for our understanding of interfacial electric fields and their influences on microscopic chemical and physical processes. Comparing various traditional models of interfacial electrostatics to the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulation yields mutually inconsistent descriptions of the interfacial electric field profile. We present MD simulation results demonstrating that the average electric field profiles experienced by particles at the interface differ from the properties of traditional models and from the fields derived from the mean charge density of atomistic simulations. Furthermore, these experienced electric field profiles are species-dependent. Based on these results, we assert that a single unifying electrostatic potential profile - the gradient of which defines a single unifying electric field profile - cannot correctly predict the electrostatic forces that act on species at the interface.
