Abstract:A NATIONWIDE program of statistical J L reporting for outpatient psychiatric clinics was established in July 1954 by the Na,tional Institute of Mental Health in cooperation with the State mental health authorities. The purpose of tllis reporting is to provide a nucleus of uniform data on outpatient psychiatric services to aid in planning programs and facilities on a national, State, and community basis. These data also aid clinics in reviewing their own operations. As a practical first step, reporting is limited to the mental health clinics with outpatient services and a psychiatrist in attendance at regularly scheduled hours who takes the medical responsibility for all clinic patients. The first publications derived from the reporting program were a national directory of clinics (1) and a monograph describing the characteristics and staff of outpatient psychiatric clinics (2) based on data submitted for 1954-55 by more than 95 percent of the clinics in the United States. In this article we are summarizing for the firs,t time national data reported on the characteristics of clinic patients and the services they receive based on information for 1955-56. Several State mental health authorities have issued reports on the data submitted by clinics operating in their jurisdictions (3-7). A national report on the community service activities of outpatient psychiatric clinics will be published later. Although the national statistical program limits requested data on patients to a minimum of basic items of information, collection is difficult. The complex and varied pattern of outpatient psychiatric service causes many problems of definition. To yield uniform data, the definition of a patient, type of service, and diagnostic classifications in particular continue to require review and modification. In many instances it was necessary to install new clinic recordkeeping systems and mechanical tabulating procedures at the State level (8). As a result, by 1956 only 499, or 39 percent, of the 1,294 outpatient psychiatric clinics in the United States were reporting information about their patients. The number of clinics reporting, by type of clinic and by State, is shown in table 1. Data on patients were reported for some but not all clinics in most of the States. Reporting procedures have since been established for the clinics of the Veterans Administration, the clinics in New York State, and additional clinics in other States. Since the clinics that reported in 1956 are not Mrs. Bahn is chief and Miss Norman is a staff analytical statistician, Outpatient Studies Section, Biometrics Branch, National Institute of Mental Health, Public Health Service.

Abstract:Dr. Maud Leanora Menten, an esteemed Canadian physician, biochemist, and organic chemist, conducted a wide range of valuable biochemistry research for over 40 years, making groundbreaking discoveries about cancer treatments, enzyme kinematics, anesthesia medicine, bacterial toxins, vitamin deficiencies, hematology, and histochemistry. Menten demonstrated intense perseverance and tenacity in her education, defying societal norms to not only become one of the first Canadian women to earn a research-intensive Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, but to also be one of the first to earn a PhD. Although she was restricted in her work in Canada, she moved to the U.S. and published an estimated 100 research studies over her career. She is most well known for her work with Dr. Leonor Michaelis, with whom she created the Michaelis-Menten equation for the relationship between reaction rate and enzyme-substrate concentration. However, she conducted many other noteworthy research projects, such as using radium bromide for cancer treatment in rats and using electrophoretic mobility to study human hemoglobin, which allowed for a more advanced protein analysis. Her research in hemoglobin preceded the findings of Linus Pauling by several years, however, he is often the only one credited for this work. After her death, the extent and depth of her work was better understood and appreciated by many, and she was recognized by her alma mater, the University of Toronto, and her former workplace, the University of Pittsburgh. She was also posthumously inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame.

Abstract:A study of the coexistence of sparrows in grassland and woodland habitats of the Research Ranch in southeastern Arizona supports the predictability of current community theory. For each of the habitats studied, the production of seeds and the abundance of seed-eating, winter-resident sparrows were measured. The theory correctly predicts the number of species supported in each of the habitats. In both cases for which the prediction is that only one species could be supported, the theory correctly predicts which species should be present.

Abstract:This first serious attempt at an autobiographical accounting has forced me to sit still long enough to compile my thoughts about a long personal and scientific journey. I especially hope that my trajectory will be of interest and perhaps beneficial to much younger women who are just getting started in their careers. To paraphrase from Virginia Woolf's writings in A Room of One's Own at the beginning of the 20th century, "for most of history Anonymous was a Woman." However, Ms. Woolf is also quoted as saying "nothing has really happened until it has been described," a harbinger of the enormous historical changes that were about to be enacted and recorded by women in the sciences and other disciplines. The progress in my chosen field of study-the chemical basis of enzyme action-has also been remarkable, from the first description of an enzyme's 3D structure to a growing and deep understanding of the origins of enzyme catalysis.

Abstract:Alongside the renowned male pioneers of medical cytogenetics, many women participated in investigations at the laboratory bench and the bedside, both in Europe and the Americas. These women were committed to this new biological and clinical practice—cytogenetics, the origins of contemporary genetic diagnosis—and contributed to the creation of new biological concepts and settings centered on the study of chromosome imaging. This paper will review the contributions made by a group of woman scientists from a wide geographical distribution, situating their names and research agendas within the history of a field dating back to early plant and insect cytogenetics. Rather than an exhaustive compendium of women geneticists, this essay presents a kind of historical reconstruction that can be achieved by placing women at center stage in their geographies and networks of circulating cytogenetic knowledge and practices thereby relating a history of genetic images though the work carried out by women, retrieving their agency and constructing an inclusive history of an influential contemporary biomedical practice as it gained increasing influence in the laboratory and the clinic.

Abstract:The most common name that is used by the feminist movement is Marie Curie's name as the first woman who conquered the men's world at that time (i.e. science). A deep and thorough investigation of the historical facts from first-source witnesses and physical evidences will prove what Marie Curie did and what her real achievements are. Where did she learn and earn her degrees? If there are any. Did she marry her professor? How did her husband die in a mysterious way? Was she involved in his death? Did she cheat on her husband? Did she have any sexual affairs with junior staff members? Why did the French Academy of Science (i.e. 100 scientists, professors, and doctors) voted to reject her application for membership in the academy? Why did the French public protest against her? Why did she work as a radiographer on a portable X-ray machine to image the wounded French soldiers? Was that a strategy to absorb the public heat? Was any of this have to do with anti-Semitism? Were her achievements exaggerated in the media? How did she win a Nobel Prize in physics and another Nobel Prize in chemistry? All these questions will be answered in this paper based on strong evidences. Naomi Pasachoff wrote a biography where she made Marie Curie a hero! But was she a hero? This paper will highlight all the propaganda written about this individual.

Abstract:In 1911, Mabel Purefoy FitzGerald (1872-1973) conducted a study in the mountains of Colorado that offered invaluable insights into how the body responds to chronic hypoxia. Researchers awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine 2019 cited her work as critical in unravelling the hypoxia sensing system. The astounding career situation in which FitzGerald found herself while conducting this study offers important insights into the challenges faced by women in science at the turn of the twentieth century. Like Ginger Rogers dancing with Fred Astaire, FitzGerald did the equivalent of everything her male colleagues did, only backward and in high heels. Although it is tempting to believe that such inequities for women are relegated to history, the career challenges faced by 2023 Nobel Laureate Katalin Karikó highlight evidence that the struggle for equality of women in science remains a significant problem.

Abstract:Dr. Nitya Anand was a leading figure in Indian pharmaceutical research. His career spanned several decades, during which he significantly contributed to advancement in drug development and public health. His innovation of Centchroman (Saheli), the world's first non-steroidal oral contraceptive pill, changes the course of contraception use in India. He had done groundbreaking work in leprosy treatment, synthetic peptides, and antibiotics. With over 400 publications and 130 patents, he supervised over 100 PhD students. Abstract:Dr. Anandibai Joshi was the first Indian female physician to complete her studies in Western medicine at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania. A pioneer in medicine, she was a trailblazing Indian woman, who had faced many hurdles during her quest for education. In her short span of life, she faced a lot of emotional, mental, physical, and social turbulence and had to prove herself at every step to the orthodox patriarchal Indian society the need to study medicine. Studying medicine in India was impossible for females during the 19th century. During those days, the females in India were uneducated due to gender differences prevalent in society, so the only option was to pursue medicine in a foreign land. Her life was full of hardships and challenges; she got married at the age of nine and, at the young age of 14, delivered a baby boy who could not survive beyond 10 days due to lack of medical care. This was the turning point in her life, and she was determined to become a physician so that the other women would not suffer the way she had. Thus began her educational journey, to pursue a career in Western medicine. Before Anandibai went to the United States, she gave a motivating speech in a public gathering, expressing the need for female doctors in India and her keenness to pursue medicine in the United States. She challenged all the social norms in those days, whether it was fighting to break gender stereotypes or convincing the male-dominated society to study medicine in the United States. This article is a reflection of Anandibai's accomplishments in her life and medical career and her dedication, determination, and strong commitment to improving the lives of Indian women. Her short life is a reflection of hope, perseverance, determination, and success and an inspiration to many Indian women to pursue education and medicine.

A list of this decade's most prominent names in ageing research would undoubtedly include many women who have led the field in recent years. While the field, and science in general, still have far to go in achieving gender parity in opportunities and recognition, we can celebrate the progress made to date. However, the longer 'history of the field' that many of us present in our classrooms, conference halls and writings often tends to be dominated by men. Although numerous men have made fundamental observations that have shaped our understanding of ageing from both a mechanistic and evolutionary perspective, the unfortunate reality is that women making similar contributions have not received equal recognition throughout much of our field's history. As a starting point for wider representation and further conversations in this area, we present here a short list of women—Marjory Warren, Lillian Jane Martin, Margaret Alexander Ohlson, Rebeca Gerschman and Marion J. Lamb—whose contributions were foundational to ageing research in the 20th century. Their work spanned theoretical, experimental and clinical insight into the biology of ageing—and yet their names are too seldom mentioned when introducing our field. We hope this list can be a starting point for a more inclusive recognition of the diverse scientists who helped pave the way for our field today.

Abstract:On the occasion of Professor Frances H. Arnold's recent acceptance of the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, we honor her numerous contributions to the fields of directed evolution and biocatalysis. Arnold pioneered the development of directed evolution methods for engineering enzymes as biocatalysts. Her highly interdisciplinary research has provided grounds not only for understanding the mechanisms of enzyme evolution but also for developing commercially viable enzyme biocatalysts and biocatalytic processes. In this Account, we highlight some of her notable contributions in the past three decades in the development of foundational directed evolution methods and their applications in the design and engineering of enzymes with desired functions for biocatalysis. Her work has created a paradigm shift in the broad catalysis field.
