Abstract:Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) are a concern owing to their toxicity to the aquatic environment. Several studies have investigated the removal of PhACs from wastewater by employing various treatments. However, hospital wastewater, a primary source of PhACs in wastewater, has yet to gain attention. Hence this study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of constructed wetlands coupled with tube settlers for hospital wastewater treatment. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) and tube settlers are economical and less energy-consuming wastewater treatment systems which can be employed to treat small community wastewater and enhance the effluent quality to conserve the environment. This study evaluates the combination of macrophyte CW-along with a tubesettler system to remove PhACs. The Constructed Wetland system was employed in series with tube settlers. Seven PhACs viz. paracetamol, ketoprofen, carbamazepine, lorazepam, Sulfamethoxazole, Ciprofloxacin, and Fluvastatin were analyzed for wastewater quality characterization. The removal efficiency of CW was 56 %, 72 %, 37 %, 54 %, 54 %, 53 %, and 46 % for PCM, KTF, CAB, LOR, SMZ, CIP and FUT respectively. The study concluded that CW could be successfully used to treat hospital wastewater, and tube settlers can be employed as a polishing treatment for the effluent of CW.

Abstract:The occurrence and removal of 42 pharmaceuticals, belonging to different therapeutic groups (analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, anti-ulcer agent, psychiatric drugs, antiepileptic drug, antibiotics, ß-blockers, diuretics, lipid regulator and cholesterol lowering statin drugs and anti-histamines), were studied in the wastewater and sewage sludge trains of a full scale integrated treatment plant. The plant employs a biological nutrient removal (BNR) process for the treatment of municipal wastewater, and a single-stage mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion for the treatment of wasted activated sludge mixed with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW), followed by a short-cut nitrification-denitrification of the anaerobic supernatant in a sequential batch reactor. Influent and effluent wastewater, as well as thickened, digested and treated sludge were sampled and analyzed for the selected pharmaceuticals in order to study their presence and fate during the treatment. Twenty three compounds were detected in influent and effluent wastewater and eleven in sludge. Infiltration of groundwater in the sewer system led to a dilution of raw sewage, resulting in lower concentrations in wastewater (up to 0.7 μg/L in influent) and sludge (70 ng/g d.w.). Due to the dilution, overall risk quotient for the mixture of pharmaceuticals detected in effluent wastewater was less than one, indicating no direct risk for the aquatic environment. A wide range of removal efficiencies during the treatment was observed, i.e. <20% to 90%. The influent concentrations of the target pharmaceuticals, as polar compounds, were undoubtedly mostly affected by BNR process in the wastewater train, and less by anaerobic-co-digestion. Mass balance calculations showed that less than 2% of the total mass load of the studied pharmaceuticals was removed by sorption. Experimentally estimated distribution coefficients (<500 L/kg) also indicated that the selected pharmaceuticals preferably remain in the aqueous phase, and that biodegradation/transformation is the primary removal mechanism for these compounds during wastewater treatment.

Abstract:With the advent of technologies in many countries, pharmaceutically active compounds (PhAC), personal care products (PPCPs), and other medicines have been treated by particular facilities. Although the overall rate of PhACs extraction from hospital wastewater (HWW) through different secondary wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) has been high equal to 79–99%, activity and proliferation of neurotransmitters are inhibited by antiseptics due to the low removal rate of some elements, such as naproxen, excellent-performance technologies are still needed. Venlafaxine and citalopram are the most used antidepressants associated with 10–12% removal value through WWTPs. While HWW contains various types of antibiotics, they improve biocides' bacterial tolerance against treatment. Ozonation is one of the methods to enhance biodegradability, whereas biofilm reactors have effectively removed emerging contaminants (ECs). Combined activate sludge (CAS) and membrane filtration bioreactors will potently exclude compounds, but previous studies show that membrane filtration bioreactors are around 30%-55% more efficient. ECs elimination in tertiary treatment has shown its great ability rather than conventional treatment sectors. Moreover, ozone treatment can decrease in PPCPs value as 90–98% through activated carbon beds. Activated carbon (NAC) has shown its full capability for micropollutants removal from PAC and membrane bioreactors as well as PPCP reside removal from treated effluents. The ratio of infect COVID-19 in one area was directly proportional, as revealed by SARS-CoV-2 detection in both HWW and wastewater in almost all countries. In this research study, multiple treatment techniques are evaluated in order to offer great-performance technology.
Primary culture of rat thymic non-lymphoid cells: influence of culture time on the expression of macrophage differentiation antigens defined by monoclonal antibodies.

Abstract:A panel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) raised to rat thymic non-lymphoid cells has been shown to discriminate between distinct subpopulations of macrophages depending on their anatomic localization in the thymus. These reagents were used in this study to examine the expression of macrophage-associated antigens in primary culture of rat thymic stromal cells. The phenotype of both adherent macrophage (AM) monolayers and non-adherent cells (NAC) released in culture medium was studied at different time points after cultivation. More than 95% AM expressed ED1 and R-MC 38 antigens (pan-macrophage markers), class I MHC antigens (OX-18) and iC3b receptor recognized by OX-42 mAb. Most of them (70-85%) were reactive with ED2, R-MC 40, 41 and 42 mAbs specific for cortical and cortico-medullary zone (CMZ) macrophages. A much smaller percentage was positive with R-MC 43/44 and R-MC 46/47 mAbs staining CMZ/medullary macrophages and a subset of cortical macrophages, respectively. A minor subset of AM expressed class II MHC molecules which progressively decreased during cultivation. NAC were phenotypically heterogeneous. In comparison with adherent cells they contained a lower percentage of cortical/CMZ phenotype macrophages. In addition, NAC were slightly enriched in R-MC 43+ cells and more significantly expressed IA/E antigens (85-95%). ED3, R-MC 39 and 45 mAbs reactive with thymic macrophages in situ were mostly non-reactive with AM and NAC in culture.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical compounds are a significant source of environmental pollution, particularly in hospital wastewater, which contains high concentrations of such compounds. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a promising approach to removing pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater. This paper aims to review the current state of knowledge on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands, including the mechanism of removal, removal efficiency, and future prospects. Pharmaceutical contaminants have been considered to be one of the most emerging pollutants in recent years. In this review article, various studies on constructed wetlands are incorporated in order to remove the pharmaceutical contaminants. The nature of constructed wetland can be explained by understanding the types of constructed wetland, characteristics of hospital wastewater, removal mechanism, and removal efficiency. The results of the review indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater. The removal mechanism of these compounds involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, including adsorption, degradation, and uptake by wetland plants. The removal efficiency of constructed wetlands varies depending on several factors, including the type and concentration of pharmaceutical compounds, the design of the wetland system, and the environmental conditions. Further research is necessary to optimize the performance of these systems, particularly in the removal of emerging contaminants, to ensure their effectiveness and long-term sustainability.

Abstract:This study reviews the efficiencies of various biological treatment systems for pharmaceutical removal from wastewater, highlighting the need for optimized parameters and tailored approaches to mitigate ecological and health risks, emphasizing ongoing innovation for sustainable solutions. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of current research on biological treatment processes for removing pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) from wastewater. Unlike previous studies on this topic, our study specifically delves into the effectiveness and drawbacks of various treatment approaches such as traditional wastewater treatment facilities (WWTP), membrane bioreactors (MBRs), constructed wetlands (CW), and moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR). Through the examination and synthesis of information gathered from more than 200 research studies, we have created a comprehensive database that delves into the effectiveness of eliminating 19 particular PhCs, including commonly studied compounds such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen, ketoprofen, indomethacin, salicylic acid, codeine, and fenoprofen, amoxicillin, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, tetracycline, atenolol, propranolol, and metoprolol. This resource provides a depth and scope of information that was previously lacking in this area of study. Notably, among these pharmaceuticals, azithromycin demonstrated the highest removal rates across all examined treatment systems, with the exception of WWTPs, while carbamazepine consistently exhibited the lowest removal efficiencies across various systems. The analysis showcases the diverse results in removal efficiency impacted by factors such as system configuration, operation specifics, and environmental circumstances. The findings emphasize the critical need for continued innovation and research, specifically recommending the integration of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with existing biological treatment methods to improve the breakdown of recalcitrant compounds like carbamazepine. Practitioner Points Persistent pharmaceuticals harm aquatic ecosystems and human health. Biological systems show varying pharmaceutical removal efficiencies. Abstract:Hospital effluents are the sources for complex high percentage of micropollutants and till date no specific treatment have been investigated for the removal of pollutants. These effluents and their complex characteristics pose resistance to unit operation which undergoes in hospital wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In other words such complex contaminants are unable to removed completely through conventional treatment processes. The pharmaceutical residues entering into the environment may pose a serious threat to the water resources around the world. In past few years environmental scientists are more concerned towards the effluent generated from medical care facilities, community health centers and hospitals. In this study, seven multi-specialty hospitals with non-identical pre-treatment were selected for 3-aspects i.e. conventional wastewater characteristics, high priority pharmaceuticals and microbial analyses. The present work is to evaluate efficacy of advanced wastewater treatment methods with regard to removal of these 3-aspects from hospital effluents before discharge into a sewage treatment plant (STP). Based on test results, two out of seven treatment technologies i.e. MBR and CW effectively reducing conventional parameters and pharmaceuticals from secondary and tertiary treatments except regeneration of microbes were observed in tertiary level by these two treatments. The result also suggests that, MBR exhibited 100% elimination of ibuprofen, carbamazepine, frusemide while CW indicated 100% elimination of ofloxacin. Furthermore, two combinations of advanced oxidation process viz. ozonation (O3) and peroxone process (O3–H2O2) were demonstrated to oxidize pharmaceuticals. The operational key factors for AOP involve pH, O3 supply, contact time, and H2O2 concentrations. Based on pharmaceuticals reduction efficiencies, the conventional O3 alone is more efficient as compared to combine O3–H2O2 treatment. Hence results confirmed that, MBR coupled with ozone process proved as an optimal technology among the seven technologies for the pre-treatment of hospital effluent.

Abstract:The indirect ingestion of pharmaceuticals in water has been proven to have adverse effects on humans according to a number of studies. Pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) are found in open waters, and drinking these types of waters primarily from raw sewage and wastewater effluents. Effective pharmaceutical removal during drinking water and wastewater treatment is a crucial part of ensuring that pharmaceuticals are effectively removed. There are various excipients and PhCs that may have chronic effects on different communities. Examples include neuroprotective agents, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), diuretics, and antibiotics. Novel procedures such as biodegradation may assist in minimizing or preventing these effects. There is a correlation between the concentrations of each drug group and the seasons or common diseases in particular areas, which emphasizes the need to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds. Organic compounds are broken down into smaller and simpler molecules through biodegradation, which uses enzymes produced by living microbes. The biodegradation of pharmaceuticals usually removes them from the environment, especially those resistant to hydrolysis and photodegradation. Many microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and algae, can perform this function. As a result, they are integral parts of the pharmaceutical degradation in the environment. Also, the degradation of PhCs from pharmaceutical wastewater (PW) can be achieved using various biological processes, such as membrane bioreactors (MBRs), conventional activated sludge treatment (CAS), moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs), and constructed wetlands. In this review article, the conventional and advanced methods of removing pharmaceutical compounds from surfaces in recent decade studies (2010–2022) are discussed.

Abstract:Anaerobic and aerobic treatment of high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater was evaluated in this study. A batch test was performed to study the biodegradability of the wastewater, and the result indicated that a combination anaerobic-aerobic treatment system was effective in removing organic matter from the high-strength pharmaceutical wastewater. Based on the batch test, a pilot-scale system composed of an anaerobic baffled reactor followed by a biofilm airlift suspension reactor was designed. At a stable operational period, effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the anaerobic baffled reactor ranged from 1,432 to 2,397 mg/L at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1.25 day, and 979 to 1,749 mg/L at an HRT of 2.5 day, respectively, when influent COD ranged from 9,736 to 19,862 mg/L. As a result, effluent COD of the biofilm airlift suspension reactor varied between 256 and 355 mg/L at HRTs of from 5.0 to 12.5 h. The antibiotics ampicillin and aureomycin, with influent concentrations of 3.2 and 1.0 mg/L, respectively, could be partially degraded in the anaerobic baffled reactor: ampicillin and aureomycin removal efficiencies were 16.4 and 25.9% with an HRT of 1.25 day, and 42.1 and 31.3% with HRT of 2.5 day, respectively. Although effective in COD removal, the biofilm airlift suspension reactor did not display significant antibiotic removal, and the removal efficiencies of the two antibiotics were less than 10%.
Methods involved in the treatment of four representative pharmaceuticals in hospital wastewater using sonochemical and biological processes

Abstract:A primary pollution source by pharmaceuticals is hospital wastewater (HWW). Herein, the methods involved in the action of a biological system (BS, aerobic activated sludge) or a sonochemical treatment (US, 375 kHz and 30.8 W), for degrading four relevant pharmaceuticals (azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, paracetamol, and valsartan) in HWW, are shown. Before treatment of HWW, the correct performance of BS was assessed using glucose as a reference substance, monitoring oxygen consumption, and organic carbon removal. Meanwhile, for US, a preliminary test using ciprofloxacin in distilled water was carried out. The determination of risk quotients (RQ) and theoretical analyses about reactive moieties on these target substances are also presented. For both, the degradation of the pharmaceuticals and the calculation of RQ, analyses were performed by LC-MS/MS. The BS action decreased the concentration of paracetamol and valsartan by ∼96 and 86%, respectively. However, a poor action on azithromycin (2% removal) was found, whereas ciprofloxacin concentration increased ∼20%; leading to an RQ value of 1.61 (high risk) for the pharmaceuticals mixture. The analyses using a biodegradation pathway predictor (EAWAG-BDD methodology) revealed that the amide group on paracetamol and alkyl moieties on valsartan could experience aerobic biotransformations. In turn, US action decreased the concentration of the four pharmaceuticals (removals > 60% for azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, and paracetamol), diminishing the environmental risk (RQ: 0.51 for the target pharmaceuticals mixture). Atomic charge analyses (based on the electronegativity equalization method) were performed, showing that the amino-sugar on azithromycin; piperazyl ring, and double bond close to the two carbonyls on ciprofloxacin, acetamide group on paracetamol, and the alkyl moieties bonded to the amide group of valsartan are the most susceptible moieties to attacks by sonogenerated radicals. The LC-MS/MS analytical methodology, RQ calculations, and theoretical analyses allowed for determining the degrading performance of BS and US toward the target pollutants in HWW.•Biological and sonochemical treatments as useful methods for degrading 4 representative pharmaceuticals are presented.•Sonochemical treatment had higher degrading action than the biological one on the target pharmaceuticals.•Methodologies for risk environmental calculation and identification of moieties on the pharmaceuticals susceptible to radical attacks are shown.

Abstract:Hospital wastewater consists of various pharmaceutical compounds. If a proper treatment procedure is not considered, discharging these compounds into the environment can cause serious problems in the aqueous ecosystem, as well as those connected to humans wellbeing. This study aimed to remove ranitidine and cefixime trihydrate drugs simultaneously using adapted activated sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and to monitor each drug degradation separately by means of statistical analysis using MATLAB 8.1 software. Total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand analyses were conducted; furthermore, the spectrophotometric spectrum of the solution was recorded as well. The partial least squares analytical method using MATLAB 8.1 software was utilized to analyze the results with the obtained R2 value of 0.99 for both ranitidine and cefixime. 71.67% of ranitidine and 59.67% of cefixime trihydrate were removed during the biological treatment in the SBR.

Removal of contaminants of emerging concern from urban wastewater in novel algal-bacterial photobioreactors

Abstract:This work evaluates the removal of five pharmaceuticals and personal care products, i.e., ibuprofen, naproxen, salicylic acid, triclosan and propylparaben, from urban wastewater under two novel algal-bacterial photobioreactor settings. The first configuration (phase A) consisted of an anoxic-aerobic photobioreactor operating at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 2d at different concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) (90mgL-1-200mgL-1). In the second configuration (phase B) an anaerobic step was introduced before the anoxic tank to set a photosynthetic A2O process. In this phase, the HRT varied between 3 and 4d and the TOC was kept constant at 200mgL-1. In addition, the impact of external aeration in the aerobic photobioreactor was assessed. The maximum removals for ibuprofen, naproxen, salicylic acid, triclosan and propylparaben (94±1%, 52±43%, 98±2%, 100±0%, 100±0%, respectively) were recorded during phase B. In phase A, low TOC concentrations triggered higher ibuprofen and naproxen removals likely due to the high contribution of biological oxidation on their removal. In phase B, total or very high removal efficiencies were observed for ibuprofen, propylparaben and triclosan independently on the operating conditions. In contrast, the removal efficiency of naproxen and salicylic acid decreased when the HRT dropped from 4 to 3d in the absence of external aeration, which suggests that biodegradation played a key role in their removal. In addition, sorption might have contributed to the elimination of triclosan and propylparaben from the wastewater.

Abstract:The presence of pharmaceutical wastewater containing antibiotic compound is one of the new problems relating to the environmental pollution. Antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP), widely used in medical treatments, can induce antibiotic resistance in low concentrations in the ecosystem and aqueous solutions. In this study, CIP was removed using moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) from real hospital-derived wastewater. This study was carried out at Beasat hospital in Hamadan, Iran. CIP (100 mL) was applied in 2 sets of plexiglass tubular columns as MBBR. Microorganisms were grown on the suspended carriers. To achieve this purpose, polyethylene kaldnes (K1) was chosen as reactor bed in 500 m2 /m3 specific area. The effect of operating parameters such as mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) (100, 1000, 3000 mg/L), hydraulic retention time (HRT) (8, 12, 24 hours), and support media with carrier K1 (30%, 50%, 70%) were evaluated. According to the results, the yield of CIP removal at 30%, 50%, and 70% of K1, reaction of 24 hours at MLSS 3000 mg/L was obtained 50.5%, 68.9%, and 97.6% respectively. In the same conditions, chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was achieved 26.78%, 30.49%, and 80.07%, respectively. Results indicated that the MBBR process can be used as an effective approach for removing CIP and COD from hospital effluent. Moreover, these data suggested that the K1 carrier could be useful in terms of mineralization and efficiency. Furthermore, development of biofilm in MBBR was mostly affected by K1.

Abstract:Contaminants of emerging concern, including pharmaceuticals, are commonly found in wastewater from households, farms, and healthcare facilities. When active pharmaceutical ingredients enter water sources, they contaminate the waterways and cause potential hazard effects on the aquatic environment and human populations. This concern is especially critical with antibiotics, due to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. However, Florfenicol, a bacteriostatic antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine, poses a significant risk of water pollution when discharged into waterways. In the present study and its practical application, removal of targeted pollutant namely antibiotic florfenicol by ozonation was investigated by measuring chemical oxidation demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and turbidity for pharmaceutical wastewater in the batch reactor, while optimizing feeding electro flocculation voltage, O 3 flow rate, O 3 dosage and ceramic membrane filtration. Due to the production of hydroxyl radicals with strong oxidation properties, pollutants in wastewater can be effectively degraded via heterogeneous catalytic ozonation. It was examined whether the regenerated catalyst exhibited good catalytic activity after three cycles of washing with Milli-Q water and ethanol. The results show that the effluent concentration of antibiotic Florfenicol is about 99% alongside residual values for 91%, 79%, and 89% for COD, BOD, and turbidity, respectively (Time: 30 min, pH: 7.5). Meanwhile, the wastewater's degradability capacity (BOD 5 /COD ratio) increased from 0.37 to 0.53, rendering it more readily biodegradable for further treatment. These results indicate that the process of hybrid electro flocculation and catalytic ozonation with ceramic membrane has a high treatment efficiency for veterinary antibiotics, and a continuous-flow reactor can be utilized more practically for a full-scale industrial application.

Abstract:An integrated lab-scale wastewater treatment system consisting of an anaerobic Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (AnMBBR) and an aerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AeMBR) in series was used to study the removal and fate of pharmaceuticals during wastewater treatment. Continuous-flow experiments were conducted applying different temperatures to the AnMBBR (Phase A: 35 °C; Phase B: 20 °C), while batch experiments were performed for calculating sorption and biotransformation kinetics. The total removal of major pollutants and target pharmaceuticals was not affected by the temperature of the AnMBBR. In Phase A, the average removal of dissolved chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) was 86%, 91% and 96% while in Phase B, 91%, 96% and 96%, respectively. Removal efficiencies ranging between 65% and 100% were observed for metronidazole (MTZ), trimethoprim (TMP), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and valsartan (VAL), while slight (<30%) or no removal was observed for carbamazepine (CBZ) and diclofenac (DCF), respectively. Application of a mass balance model showed that the predominant mechanism for the removal of pharmaceuticals was biotransformation, while the role of sorption was of minor importance. The AeMBR was critical for VAL, SMX and TMP biodegradation; the elimination of MTZ was strongly enhanced by the AnMBBR. In both bioreactors, Bacteroidetes was the dominant phylum in both bioreactors over time. In the AnMBBR, Cloacibacterium and Bacteroides had a higher abundance in the biocarriers compared to the suspended biomass.
Simultaneous Removal of Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance Genes from Pharmaceutical Wastewater Using the Combinations of Up-Flow Anaerobic Sludge Bed, Anoxic-Oxic Tank, and Advanced Oxidation Technologies

Abstract:Pharmaceutical wastewater often contains high levels of antibiotic residues and serves as an important reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the current pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plants (PWWTPs) were not sufficiently effective in removing antibiotics and ARGs. Here, we designed a lab-scale simulation reactor, including up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB), anoxic-oxic tank (A/O), and four separate advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) i.e., UV, Ozonation, Fenton, and Fenton/UV, to simultaneously remove 18 antibiotics and 10 ARGs from a real pharmaceutical wastewater. The results showed that all antibiotics were fully eliminated through the reactor during 180 d-operation. Among all treatment units, UASB provided the greatest contribution (85.8 +/- 16.1%) for the removal of 18 antibiotics. The mass balance results manifested that degradation was a predominant mechanism for the removal of tetracyclines, sulfamethoxazole, and ampicillin (62.5-80.9%), while sorption to sludge (73.9%) was predominant for enrofloxacin removal in UASB. Meanwhile, the substantial decrease of ARG absolute abundance (log reduction by 0.1-3.1 fold) through the whole reactor was observed although the existence of the partial enrichment (1.2-3.8 log units) from the influent to the A/O unit. Fenton/UV combination was the most effective AOP for the removal of ARGs. Finally, the optimum operating conditions for the removal of ARGs using Fenton was also proposed considering the relatively lower cost and high ARG elimination. Overall, this study provides feasible suggestions for the design of real PWWTPs for simultaneous removal of antibiotics and ARGs. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Introduction Pharmaceutical wastewater frequently contains high levels of toxic pollutants. If they are discharged untreated, they pose a threat to the environment. The traditional activated sludge process and the advanced oxidation process do not sufficiently remove toxic and conventional pollutants from pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plants (PWWTPs). Methods We designed a pilot-scale reaction system to reduce toxic organic pollutants and conventional pollutants from pharmaceutical wastewater during the biochemical reaction stage. This system included a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), an expanded sludge bed reactor (EGSB), and a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). We used this system to further investigate the benzothiazole degradation pathway. Results and discussion The system effectively degraded the toxic pollutants (benzothiazole, pyridine, indole, and quinoline) and the conventional chemicals (COD, NH 4 + -N, TN). During the stable operation of the pilot-scale plant, the total removal rates of benzothiazole, indole, pyridine, and quinoline were 97.66, 94.13, 79.69, and 81.34%, respectively. The CSTR and MECs contributed the most to the removal of toxic pollutants, while the EGSB and MBBR contributed less to the removal of the four toxic pollutants. Benzothiazoles can be degraded via two pathways: the benzene ring-opening reaction and the heterocyclic ring-opening reaction. The heterocyclic ring-opening reaction was more important in degrading the benzothiazoles in this study. Conclusion This study provides feasible design alternatives for PWWTPs to remove both toxic and conventional pollutants at the same time.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) pose a growing concern with potential environmental impacts, commonly introduced into the environment via wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The occurrence, removal, and season variations of 60 different classes of PhCs were investigated in the baffled bioreactor (BBR) wastewater treatment process during summer and winter. The concentrations of 60 PhCs were 3400 ± 1600 ng/L in the influent, 2700 ± 930 ng/L in the effluent, and 2400 ± 120 ng/g dw in sludge. Valsartan (Val, 1800 ng/L) was the main contaminant found in the influent, declining to 520 ng/L in the effluent. The grit chamber and BBR tank were substantially conducive to the removal of VAL. Nonetheless, the BBR process showcased variable removal efficiencies across different PhC classes. Sulfadimidine had the highest removal efficiency of 87 ± 17% in the final effluent (water plus solid phase). Contrasting seasonal patterns were observed among PhC classes within BBR process units. The concentrations of many PhCs were higher in summer than in winter, while some macrolide antibiotics exhibited opposing seasonal fluctuations. A thorough mass balance analysis revealed quinolone and sulfonamide antibiotics were primarily eliminated through degradation and transformation in the BBR process. Conversely, 40.2 g/d of macrolide antibiotics was released to the natural aquatic environment via effluent discharge. Gastric acid and anticoagulants, as well as cardiovascular PhCs, primarily experienced removal through sludge adsorption. This study provides valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of PhCs in wastewater treatment, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies to effectively mitigate their release and potential environmental risks.
