Abstract:Novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIP) were prepared for selective removal of norfloxacin by effectively utilizing photocatalytic degradation and magnetic separation techniques. The imprinted material with titanium layer and multihole surface showed an excellent photocatalytic property. In this paper, the kinetics of photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin by MMIP was explored, and the influences of environmental factors, including solution pH, humic acid, common ions and water media on photocatalytic performance of MMIP were elucidated. The results showed that MMIP had good adaptability and could degrade norfloxacin within 60 min, but the degradation rate constant decreased in surface water. Based on the identification of intermediate products, the possible degradation pathways of norfloxacin were analysed, speculating that it might be degraded into small molecules in the form of de-piperazine ring, de-carboxyl group and de-fluorine. Moreover, the mineralization ratio of norfloxacin could reach 84.2% after ultraviolet irradiation for 150 min, and the low cobalt release of MMIP enhanced the security of the material. The results of adsorption and degradation cycle tests showed that MMIP obtained by molecular imprinting technology had excellent performance in sustainable use for micro organic pollutants removal.

Abstract:Norfloxacin (NOR), a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, has been a focus of attention in recent years due to its adverse effect on human beings and aquatic ecosystems. Magnetic C-ZnFe2O4 (C-ZFO) composite was fabricated by a one-step hydrothermal method and characterized via SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, VSM. Under given conditions:[NOR] = 5 mg/L, [persulfate (PS)] = 0.25 mM, [pH]0 = 6.7, [C-ZFO] = 1.5 g/L, MW = 400 W, T = 70 ℃, the degradation of NOR reached 86.2% in 40 min, and the highest TOC removal ratio reached 69.6%. The presence of active species (SO4 ·−,·O2 −, HO·, h+) was monitored in C-ZFO activated persulfate under microwave irradiation system (MW-C-ZFO/PS) through radical scavenger study. Meanwhile, intermediate products of NOR and five possible degradation pathways were identified using HPLC-MS. Moreover, the toxicity of NOR intermediates was analyzed by the Vibrio fischeri to evaluate the health risk of the treated water. Overall, microwave irradiation is an efficient technology for degrading NOR in environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this work, Cu-based metal-organic framework material (Cu-MOF) was combined with an electric field to construct a three-dimensional electrocatalytic synergistic activation of peroxymonosulfate sulfate (PMS) system (3D/Cu-MOF/EC/PMS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR). The results show that the synergistic degradation efficiency of the Cu-MOF material with the electric field is enhanced by nearly 64 % relative to the degradation efficiency of the two alone. The quenching experimental and EPR characterization indicates that ROS plays an important role in the degradation process, with center dot O2- playing a dominant role. Finally, the degradation pathway of NOR was explored by DFT study and LC-MS tests, and the toxicity evaluation software (TEST) and CCK-8 cytotoxicity experimental studies demonstrated that the sewage after the degradation of NOR by this system would have little or no effect on human liver cells (L02). This study not only shows that the 3D/Cu-MOF/ EC/PMS system can treat the water containing higher concentrations of NOR into a state that is not harmful to the human body but also provides a new idea for the improvement of catalysts that do not have obvious catalytic degradation effects.
Enhanced solar light-driven photocatalysis of norfloxacin using Fe-doped TiO2: RSM optimization, DFT simulations, and toxicity study

Abstract:This study investigates the photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin (NFX) utilizing Fe-doped TiO 2 nanocomposite under natural sunlight. TiO 2 -based photocatalysts were synthesized using chemical precipitation varying Fe-dopant concentration and characterized in detail. Theoretical modelling, centred on density functional theory (DFT), elucidated that Fe ions within the TiO 2 lattice are effectively confined, thereby narrowing the wide band gap of TiO 2 . The findings strongly support that Fe 3+ ions augmented the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 by facilitating an intermediate interfacial route for electron and hole transfer, particularly up to an optimal dopant concentration of 1.5 M%. Subsequently, a three-level Box–Behnken design (BBD) was developed to determine the initial pH, optimal catalyst concentration, and drug dosage. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS) was employed to identify reaction intermediates, thereby establishing a potential degradation pathway. Notably, sustained recyclability was achieved, with 82% degradation efficiency maintained over five cycles. Additionally, the toxicity of degradation intermediates was evaluated through bacterial and phytotoxicity tests, affirming the environmental safety of treated water. In vitro toxicity of the nanomaterial was also examined, emphasizing its environmental implications. Scavenger experiments revealed that hole and hydroxyl radicals were the primary active species in Fe-TiO 2 -based photocatalysis. Furthermore, the antibacterial potential of the synthesized catalyst was assessed using Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus to observe their respective antibacterial responses.

Abstract:The recycling and utilization of waste biomass resources have attracted widespread attention due to their enormous potential economic value. In this study, a magnetic zero-valent iron nanoflake-modified graphitic mesoporous carbon composite (Fe@SBCx) was prepared using ultrasound-assisted impregnation and pyrolysis strategies, and employed as an efficient peroxydisulfate (PDS) activator for the removal of the antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) from water. The Fe@SBC 1.13 /PDS system exhibited excellent oxidation performance, achieving nearly complete removal (>99 %) of 10 mg/L NOR within 25 min. Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and ferryl iron species (Fe(IV)) were identified as the major oxidative reactive species in the system. The formation of electron donor–acceptor complexes during the reaction facilitated the decomposition of PDS and the generation of oxidative species. Fe@SBC 1.13 demonstrated satisfactory recyclability and catalytic stability. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and intermediate product analysis, the degradation pathways of NOR were proposed. Moreover, the toxicity evaluation results revealed a lower bacterial cytotoxicity in the treated drainage. Overall, this study not only enriches the theoretical research on the degradation mechanisms of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in the environment but also provides a viable approach for developing highly efficient and carbon–neutral catalysts.

Abstract:Developing an efficient catalyst for persulfate activation is critical to the high-efficiency degradation of organic pollutants in an aqueous solution using a persulfate-based advanced oxidation method. A biochar-based catalyst, 800Fe 2 BC 2, was prepared using a novel technology of potassium ferrate oxidation coupled with high-temperature pyrolysis based on the biomass raw material of waste branches pruned from apple trees in an orchard. Batch tests were conducted to degrade norfloxacin using 800Fe 2 BC 2 to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Norfloxacin was almost completely degraded within 10 minutes. The reactive oxygen species (ROS), for instance, •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 , were generated in the 800Fe 2 BC 2 /PMS system. The iron oxides, defective structures, and C=O groups in 800Fe 2 BC 2 served as catalytic sites for generating free radicals. However, the recombination of superoxide radicals, the interaction of C=O groups on the catalyst surface with PMS, and the self-decomposition of PMS contributed to generating 1 O 2 . The quenching test showed that the degree of the contribution of •OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 to NOR degradation was approximately 1 O 2 >O 2 •− > SO 4 •− >•OH, respectively. We proposed three potential NOR degradation pathways: piperazine ring opening (P), quinolone ring oxidation (Q), and benzene ring defluorination (F). Then part of these intermediates was completely mineralized into inorganics like CO 2 , H 2 O, NO 3 − and F − . The acute and chronic toxicity of the degradation products were estimated, and the evolution of toxicity in the present catalytic system could not be ignored and should be overcome by deeper mineralization. The prepared 800Fe 2 BC 2 demonstrated a good application prospect with good stability, recyclability, low metal leaching, and versatility to various refractory pollutants. Therefore, this study offered a new way of producing biochar-based catalysts for activating PMS using biomass wastes.

Abstract:Nonradical persulfate oxidation techniques have evolved as a new contaminated water treatment approach due to its great tolerance to water matrixes. The catalysts of CuO-based composites have received much attention in that aside from SO4•-/•OH radicals, the nonradicals of singlet oxygen (1O2) can be also generated during persulfate activation via CuO. However, the issues regarding particles aggregation and metal leaching from the catalysts during the decontamination process remain to be addressed, which could have a remarkable impact on the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Accordingly in the present study, a novel biochar-supported bimetallic Fe3O4-CuO catalyst (CuFeBC) was facilely developed to activate peroxodisulfate (PDS) for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) in aqueous solution. The results showed CuFeBC has a superior stability against metal ions Cu/Fe leaching, and NOR (30 mg L-1) was degraded at 94.5% within 180 min in the presence of CuFeBC (0.5 g L-1) and PDS (6 mM) in pH 8.5. The scavenging of reactive oxygen species and electron spin resonance analysis revealed that 1O2 dominated the degradation of NOR. Compared with pristine CuO-Fe3O4, the interaction between biochar substrate and metal particles could significantly enhance the contribution of the nonradical pathway to NOR degradation from 49.6% to 84.7%. Biochar substrate could efficiently reduce the leaching of metal species from the catalyst, thereby maintaining excellent catalytic activity and lasting reusability of the catalyst. These findings could enlighten new insights into fine-tuning radical/nonradical processes from CuO-based catalysts for the efficient remediation of organic contaminants in polluted water.

Abstract:As an undesirable by-product of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), sewage sludge (SS) caused considerable stress on the normal operation of WWTPs, because of its expensive disposal costs. On the other hand, exploiting resource utilization of the residual SS seems to be an attractive approach to resolve this problem. In this study, SS was thermally converted into biochar catalysts (SBC) under oxygen-limiting conditions. By using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as the chemical oxidant, norfloxacin (NOR) could be effectively removed and the reaction was significantly accelerated after the addition of SBC. Specifically, over 90% of NOR was eliminated by the SBC 800 /PMS process within 70 min. As evidenced by the comprehensive mechanistic investigations, 1 O 2 as well as electron-transfer regime primarily participated in the NOR degradation process, while radical species played minor roles. More importantly, the endogenous iron substances endowed SBC with magnetic properties, making the efficient separation of SBC from water available. Eventually, the possible intermediates were tentatively identified by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and the corresponding degradation pathways were proposed. Overall, this research developed a novel method to achieve the remediation of NOR-contaminated water and elimination of the potential risks of SS simultaneously.

Abstract:In this study, electrochemical (ECG-G: graphite anode and cathode, ECI-G: iron anode and graphite cathode) enhanced heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by CoFe2O4 nanoparticles for the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) in water was investigated. Although a higher NOR removal efficiency was achieved in ECI-G/CoFe2O4/PMS system, the generation of Fe3+ had resulted in the deposition of iron mud and affect the recovery of CoFe2O4. Under the optimum reaction conditions of CoFe2O4/PMS system, the final removal efficiency of NOR did not show significant difference in ECG-G/CoFe2O4/PMS system (96.0%) and CoFe2O4/PMS system (95.5%), but the value of apparent rate constant significantly increased in ECG-G/CoFe2O4/PMS system (0.21 min−1) compared with CoFe2O4/PMS system (0.11 min−1). Similar NOR degradation pathways were obtained in these two systems, and the TOC removal efficiency in ECG-G/CoFe2O4/PMS system (28.8%) is almost as low as CoFe2O4/PMS system (26.0%). Therefore, it can be proposed that the applied electric field through active electrodes can accelerate the reaction of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation, but does not participate much in NOR degradation. However, the TOC removal efficiency (30 min) could be reached 68.7% as the mass ratio of PMS to CoFe2O4 increased to 5:1 (250 mg L−1: 50 mg L−1). The ECG-G/CoFe2O4/PMS system is a promising low-cost technique for efficient mineralization of antibiotics in wastewater.

Abstract:Photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC) has been verified to be a promising technique to treat organic matter and recover energy synchronously. Sulfate radicals (SO4·−), as a strong oxidant, have obvious advantages in the degradation of refractory pollutants compared with hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which is the dominant radical in PFC. This study reports a coupling method of PFC and persulfate (PS) activation to promote the degradation of antibiotic norfloxacin (NOR) and simultaneous electricity generation. The added PS as an electron acceptor could be activated by photoelectric effects to produce SO4·− at the electrodes-electrolyte interface. In the solution, PS as supporting electrolyte could accelerate the electron transfer and also be activated by ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation, which could extend the radical oxidation reaction to the whole solution and improve the PFC performance. The performance comparison among different systems indicated the excellent synergistic effect of PFC and PS activation for improving NOR degradation and electricity generation. The effects of influencing factors including initial pH, PS concentration, and initial NOR concentration on the degradation of NOR were investigated extensively to find out the optimal conditions. Moreover, according to the results of radical capture experiments, the significantly contribution of both SO4·− and ·OH to the degradation of NOR was demonstrated and a tentative function mechanism for the NOR degradation in the proposed system was provided. Finally, total organic carbon and real wastewater treatment confirmed the high mineralization and practical applicability of the proposed PFC/PS system.

Abstract:In this study, a novel N, S-co-doped carbon-based Ag 3 PO 4 composite photocatalyst (N,S-Ag 3 PO 4 @ACB) was synthesized using activated biochar (ACB) as a carrier and used for the efficient removal of norfloxacin (NOR), a typical bio-refractory antibiotic. We systematically investigated the degradation effects, actual wastewater treatment, the impacts of environmental factors, and the degradation pathways. The results show that N,S-Ag 3 PO 4 @ACB is essentially a p-n heterojunction with Z-scheme of Ag 2 S/Ag 3 PO 4 /ACB composite containing Ag nanoparticles. After 120 min of irradiation, N,S-Ag 3 PO 4 @ACB removed 90.42% of an initial NOR concentration of 50 mg L –1 . The activation of graphitic N and the lone electron pairs of N and S, promoted rapid photogenerated charge transfer. Furthermore, the surface properties of ACB promoted free radicals generation, and the surface plasmon resonance effect of the Ag nanoparticles synergistically enhanced the photocatalytic activity. A new degradation intermediate of NOR was identified, and the degradation dynamics were elucidated with three main pathways.

High-efficiency degradation of norfloxacin by cathodic micro-arc plasma electrolysis:Optimization of operation parameters and investigation on kinetics

Abstract:In this work, the norfloxacin antibiotic (NOR) in simulated wastewater solution was rapidly degraded by a novel cathodic micro-arc plasma electrolysis (CMPE) treatment within 20 min. The effects and kinetics of initial pH value of solution, supporting electrolyte, and applied voltage on this NOR degradation process were systematically investigated. The intermediate products are analyzed by a Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS), and the possible degradation pathways in the NOR degradation process were proposed. The results obtained showed that the NOR removal efficiency increased with the increase of the initial pH value of the solution. When KCl was employed as the supporting electrolyte instead of KNO 3 and K 2 SO 4 , the removal efficiency of NOR is the highest. In addition, the removal efficiency is not significantly different at 340 V, 380 V, and 420 V, but it is more beneficial to the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the increase of average current efficiency (ACE) at 380 V. Furthermore, under the optimized operating parameters for the initial pH value of 9, supporting electrolyte of KCl, and applied voltage of 380 V, the 100 mg/L NOR solution can be completely removed within 10 min, and the energy yield and average current efficiency were 0.385 g (kW⋅h) -1 and 0.118. Further, it is found that the degradation pathways of NOR mainly include the piperazine ring opening, hydroxylation, defluorination, and quinoline ring transformation. Overall, this study provides a high-efficiency and novel technique for the NOR degradation treatment.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes utilizing percarbonate (SPC) have garnered considerable interest in the realm of water purification, but the all-encompassing constraint on pH conditions largely hindered its environmental applications. Here, a combination process of ball-milled pyrite@biochar and SPC was constructed to accelerate the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) at an inherent pH environment. Results showed that the ball-milled pyrite@biochar + SPC system accomplished almost complete removal of NOR within 60 min, demonstrated excellent pH resilience ranging from pH 3.0 to 10.0, and manifested over 90 % NOR removal in cycle operation. The main mechanism of NOR removal encompassed both adsorption and oxidation processes. The NOR initially adhered to the ball-milled pyrite@biochar interface. Then, the interaction of the ball-milled pyrite@biochar and SPC yielded a multitude of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as •OH, O 2 •− , and 1 O 2 , along with electron complexes. The enhanced performance of SPC activated by the ball-milled pyrite@biochar could essentially be attributed to the greater Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ circulation and better electron utilization efficiency through the existence of sulfur species and oxygen-containing functional groups. Accordingly, the regenerated Fe 2+ was able to rapidly activate SPC for the production of ROS and electron complexes. Moreover, three possible NOR degradation pathways were put forward. It was illustrated that the application of the ball-milled pyrite@biochar + SPC could effectively reduce the ecotoxicity of NOR in wastewater. Overall, this study established a solid foundation for the implementation of ball-milled pyrite@biochar + SPC system in efficient water purification process.

Abstract:With indiscriminate use and disposal, antibiotics enter the water bodies and thus are categorized as emerging pollutants. We report the studies on the degradation of norfloxacin, a well-known antibiotic, using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO) by heterogeneous Fenton process in the presence of sunlight. We fabricated ZnO nanoparticles by hydrothermal method. The geometry of norfloxacin was optimized using Hartree–Fock density functional theory. We used UV–Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy techniques to determine various crystal properties, i.e., structure, morphology, size and shape of the ZnO nanoparticles. However, we evaluated the crystal size, particle size and their distribution employing Debye–Scherrer equation and ImageJ processing. The catalytic efficacy of ZnO nanoparticles was assessed by the abatement of norfloxacin at pH 10. The activity and stability of used ZnO catalyst for norfloxacin degradation were established. The recovered catalyst is reusable up to six times without activity loss. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis confirmed the presence of various intermediates. A probable reaction mechanism for degradation of norfloxacin is proposed. The ZnO-catalyzed heterogeneous Fenton process proves to be the ideal approach for the degradation of antibiotics in wastewater.Graphical abstractHerein, we report that generation of hydroxyl radical by the action of sunlight along with ZnO nanoparticles from hydrogen peroxide effectively degrades norfloxacin. Its structure has been optimized by density functional theory using Gauss view computational software. ZnO nanoparticles have been characterized by various techniques, e.g., XRD, SEM, TEM, etc. Various intermediate products have been recognized by LCMS analysis.

Abstract:The magnetic Fe-MOFs derivatives obtained by high-temperature calcination under inert atmosphere have been studied and acted as high-efficiency catalysts in wastewater remediation. However, due to the shortcoming that the unstable structure of Fe-MOFs derivatives tends to collapse and agglomerate easily, it is necessary to find a support to improve its dispersibility and stability. In this work, an effective method was provided to fabricate biochar-loaded MIL-53(Fe) derivatives () to activate peroxydisulfate (PDS) for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation. The efficiency of the /PDS system for NOR removal can reach to 91.2% within 15 minutes, and the reaction constant (k) was 52.15 times of BC/PDS and 22.19 times of FexC/PDS. Characterization results illustrated that the superior spatial pore structure and exposed active sites of allowed NOR to diffuse and interact with the catalyst efficiently. •OH, SO4•- and 1O2 were the main reactive oxygen species involved in NOR degradation. Moreover, the /PDS system exhibited excellent stability that almost unaffected by various environmental conditions (such as tap water, river water, and medical wastewater), which would provide a reference path for application in actual water treatment.

Photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics by N-doped carbon nanoflakes-nickel ferrite composite derived from algal biomass

Abstract:This work reports the synthesis of nickel ferrite (NiFe) nanoparticles, N-doped mesoporous carbon nanoflakes (NCF) and novel nickel ferrite-carbon nanoflakes (NiFe@NCF) nanocomposite using solvothermal method. NCF was derived from a cyanobacterial consortium consisting of Anabaena, Lyngbya and Weistiellopsis, rich in carbon and nitrogen. The synthesized nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous photocatalyst for degradation of two harmful water pollutants, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and levofloxacin (LEV). 99.91% LEV and 98.86% CIP were degraded within 50 and 70 min of visible light irradiation using NiFe@NCF following pseudo first order kinetics. This improved efficiency of the nanocomposite may be attributed to its higher surface area, reduction of band gap (from 2.42 to 2.19 eV), more active sites as well as charge carrier mobility with decreasing agglomeration tendency of the magnetic nickel nanoparticles upon being embedded on NCF. N-doping improves light harvesting property, retards charge recombination and extends as well as delocalises ᴨ-conjugated system resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activity. The scavenging experiments and EPR analysis reveal that O2-• and •OH are the main active species taking part in the degradation process. The material performs well within a wide range of pH and can be effectively used up to 5 repetitive cycles. A feasible photocatalytic degradation mechanism of the antibiotics against NiFe@NCF nanocomposite is also put forwarded along with their possible degradation pathways from LCMS studies.

Abstract:Upcycling waste plastics into valuable products for eliminating hazardous contaminants in aquatic matrixes represents an attractive approach to addressing the urgent environmental crisis. Herein, the magnetic FeNi@CNTs chainmail catalysts were successfully fabricated from waste plastics via catalytic pyrolysis and employed for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to efficiently degrade norfloxacin (NOR) during the advanced oxidation process. Results revealed that the amount of metal loading played a critical role in the physicochemical properties and catalytic activities of FeNi@CNTs. The optimal NOR removal efficiency (100%) was achieved via FeNi30@CNTs with moderate metal content, which was attributed to the synergy between metal core and CNTs shell. Fe-Ni alloy not only catalyzed the growth of CNTs, but also activated PMS to generate more reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, CNTs acted as quick electron transfer routes to speed up the catalytic reactions and protected the metal core from agglomeration. However, excess metal led to the agglomeration of particles outside CNTs, thus inhibiting NOR degradation. Moreover, FeNi30@CNTs exhibited good stability and reusability during the cyclic experiments. The possible mechanism was deeply discussed by quenching experiments, EPR, XPS, and LC-MS characterizations. This study provides a novel route of waste-to-waste remediation, making FeNi@CNTs an inexpensive and sustainable candidate in antibiotic degradation, and simultaneously opens up a new perspective to alleviate the environmental problems caused by waste plastics.

Abstract:Degradation of norfloxacin (NFX) by zinc oxide (ZnO)/g-C3N4, a magnetic sheet ZnO with g-C3N4 on its surface was studied. Through a new preparation system method, hydrothermal reaction provides a solid-layered magnetic ZnO material basis, and the simple thermal condensation method was used to transform the urea into g-C3N4 on the magnetic sheet ZnO in a uniform and orderly manner to increase the stability and photocatalytic performance of the material. Compared with previous studies, the pore volume and photocatalytic performance of the material are improved, and became more stable. By studying the degradation effect of basic and photocatalytic materials prepared in different proportions, the kinetic constant of ZGF is 0.01446 (min−1). The response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the optimization and effect of solution pH (4−12), photocatalyst concentration (0.2–1.8 g/L), and NFX concentration (3–15 mg/L) on the degradation rate of NFX during photocatalytic degradation. The R2 value of the RSM model was 0.9656. The NFX removal rate is higher than 90% when the amount of catalyst is 1.43 g/L, the solution pH is 7.12, and the NFX concentration is less than 8.61 mg/L. After 5 cycles, the degradation rate of magnetic materials decreased to 92.8% of the first time. The capture experiment showed that the photocatalytic machine Toxicities was mainly hole action. The TOC removal rate within 2 h was 30%, a special intermediate toxicity analysis method was adopted according to the characteristics of NFX's inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli community. The toxicity of degraded NFX solution disappeared, and the possibility of non-toxic harm of by-products was verified. LC-Q-TOF method was used to detect and analyze various intermediate products converted from NFX after photocatalytic degradation, and the photocatalytic degradation pathway of NFX was proposed.

Abstract:A lack of eco-friendly, highly active photocatalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and unclear environmental risks are significant challenges. Herein, we developed a double S-scheme Fe2O3/BiVO4(110)/BiVO4(010)/Fe2O3 photocatalyst to activate PMS and investigated its impact on wheat seed germination. We observed an improvement in charge separation by depositing Fe2O3 on the (010) and (110) surfaces of BiVO4. This enhancement is attributed to the formation of a dual S-scheme charge transfer mechanism at the interfaces of Fe2O3/BiVO4(110) and BiVO4(010)/Fe2O3. By introducing PMS into the system, photogenerated electrons effectively activate PMS, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4·-). Among the tested systems, the 20% Fe2O3/BiVO4/Vis/PMS system exhibits the highest catalytic efficiency for norfloxacin (NOR) removal, reaching 95% in 40 min. This is twice the catalytic efficiency of the Fe2O3/BiVO4/PMS system, 1.8 times that of the Fe2O3/BiVO4 system, and 5 times that of the BiVO4 system. Seed germination experiments revealed that Fe2O3/BiVO4 heterojunction was beneficial for wheat seed germination, while PMS had a significant negative effect. This study provides valuable insights into the development of efficient and sustainable photocatalytic systems for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater.
