Abstract:Observations of human infants during feeding presents a rich source of data to identify the ways in which hunger, appetite and satiety are communicated in early life. Infants signal appetite through their interest or disinterest in food using a series of communication cues from rapid and transient facial expressions to subtle or potent gestures and bodily movements through to vocalisations and eventually speech. Even in the first days of life facial expressions in response to basic tastes are clearly demonstrated and shared between human infants, other primates and the rat. These sensory typical reactions are said to have biological significance since the positive affective response to sweet taste secures a safe and useful source of energy whilst an aversive response to bitter may protect against toxicity. However, beyond these shared responses to basic tastes, the human infant has a sophisticated communication system to demonstrate readiness to eat, avid or waning appetite and satiety. Video capture and behavioural coding of infant communication and caregiver responses during meals reveal the dynamic nature of mealtime interactions. Responsiveness to infant cues is influenced by maternal characteristics and mode of feeding. Breastfeeding facilitates communication by enhancing maternal responsiveness and increasing the frequency of engagement and disengagement cues of the infant. This demonstrates the bi-directionality and interdependence of infant communication during a feed, namely that more responsive feeding for example, through breastfeeding, is associated with more proficient communication by the infant. Overall, observational methods have revealed the complex ways in which infants signal energy needs to their caregivers, and in turn these same methods have captured on film the ways in which carers recognise and react to these signals as part of responsive feeding. Potential applications of these methods includes developing interventions to facilitate infant self-regulation through responsive feeding.

Abstract:While considerable research exists on parent feeding practices for infants and toddlers, past research has not focused on children with feeding problems. The goal of this study was to identify parent feeding practices in a sample of infants (n = 178) and toddlers (n = 221) referred to a hospital-based feeding clinic and then examine how these parent feeding practices were correlated with specific feeding problems. Parents completed surveys to report child demographics, feeding problems, and use of 54 feeding practices. Forty-eight (88.8%) of 54 practices were utilized more often for toddlers than for infants. Exploratory factor analysis with the 54 practices and the full sample (n = 399) produced the 16-item Baby Parent Mealtime Action Scale (BPMAS) with three dimensions: Multiple Food Offers, Use of Cereal/Pureed Foods, Use of Toys/TV. Controlling for demographics, hierarchical regression examined how each BPMAS dimension was associated with five feeding problems (underweight, tube feeding, texture problems, limited diet, mealtime disruption). Multiple Food Offers (e.g., daily offering of vegetables, offering foods from the family meal) was the dimension most correlated with fewer feeding problems such as tube feeding (β = -0.220, p < 0.001), texture rejection (β = -0.361, p < 0.001), and limited diet variety (β = -0.175, p < 0.001), but also with more mealtime disruption (β = 0.231, p < 0.001). Use of Toys/TV was correlated with more mealtime disruption (β = 0.260, p < 0.001). In addition to demonstrating a correlation between parent feeding practices and feeding problems, this study also found adding cereal/pureed foods to be common and while the dimension, Use of Cereal/Pureed Foods, was not significantly correlated with any specific feeding problem, this dimension provides an expanded understanding of cereal usage.
Common Feeding Practices Used by Chinese Caregivers of 6-10-Month-Old Infants: A Behavioral Observation Study in Shaanxi Province

Abstract:Objective: To explore the feeding practices and feeding environment of Chinese families with 6-10-month-old infants. Design: One day of caregiver-recorded feeding occasions. Setting: Homes in Shaanxi, China. Participants: Families recruited using convenience sampling. Variables measured: Videos were coded for feeding practice frequency and acceptance rate, feeding environment, and responsiveness to infant fullness cues and eating pace. Analysis: Wilcoxon rank sum tests examined the differences in feeding practice use based on caregiver type, infant sex, and infant weight status. Results: Twenty-eight families provided videos for coding. The most commonly observed feeding practices were opening the mouth, giving instructions, and interfering with the child's actions. Prompts to eat were accepted 86.9% of the time. Overweight infants' caregivers used significantly more coercive prompts to eat than did caregivers of healthy-weight infants (P < 0.05). Mothers used more autonomy-supportive prompts to eat than did fathers (P < 0.05). Early, active, and late infant fullness cues were captured in 25.6%, 34.8%, and 8.5% of videos, respectively. 53.6% of caregivers fed at the right pace, whereas 14.5% and 31.9% fed too slow or too fast, respectively. Approximately 5.5% of videos had a screen on, and 33.5% of videos included at least 1 other distraction during the meal. Conclusions and implications: Differences in feeding practices among caregivers suggest that targeted advice may further improve feeding practices. Improving the caregiver's ability to identify satiety cues and respond to infant eating speed may also reduce the risk of overfeeding.
Bio-Inspired Breastfeeding Simulator (BIBS): A Tool for Studying the Infant Feeding Mechanism

Abstract:Objective: This work introduces a bio-inspired breastfeeding simulator (BIBS), an experimental apparatus that mimics infant oral behavior and milk extraction, with the application of studying the breastfeeding mechanism in vitro. Methods: The construction of the apparatus follows a clinical study by the authors that collects measurements of natural intra-oral vacuum, the pressure from infant's jaw, tongue and upper palate, as well as nipple deformation on the breast areola area. The infant feeding mechanism simulator consists of a self-programmed vacuum pump assembly simulating the infant's oral vacuum, two linear actuators mimicking the oral compressive forces, and a motor-driven gear representing the tongue motion. A flexible, transparent and tissue-like breast phantom with bifurcated milk duct structure is designed and developed to work as the lactating human breast model. Bifurcated ducts are connected with a four-outlet manifold under a reservoir filled with milk-mimicking liquid. Piezoelectric sensors and a CCD (charge-coupled device) camera are used to record and measure the in vitro dynamics of the apparatus. Results: All mechanisms are successfully coordinated to mimic the infant's feeding mechanism. Suckling frequency and pressure values on the breast phantom from the experimental apparatus are in good agreement with the clinical data. Also, the change in nipple deformation captured by BIBS matches with those from in vivo clinical ultrasound images. Significance: The fully-developed breastfeeding simulator provides a powerful tool for understanding the bio-mechanics of breastfeeding and formulates a foundation for future breastfeeding device development.
BabyByte: Qualitative Research to Inform the Development of an App to Improve Responsive Feeding Practices in Parents of Infants and Toddlers

Abstract:Responsive feeding is associated with a reduced risk of childhood obesity. The objective of this qualitative study was to determine parental preferences for mobile health (mHealth) app content and features designed to improve responsive feeding practices. Parents of 0-2-year-old children were interviewed individually. Interview questions were informed by the Technology Acceptance Model, and parents provided feedback on sample app content and features. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and coded by two researchers using thematic analysis; responses were compared by parent gender and income. Parents (n = 20 fathers, n = 20 mothers) were, on average, 33 years old, low-income (50%), identified as non-white (52.5%), and had a bachelor's degree or higher (62%). Overall, parents were most interested in feeding tips and recipe content, and app features that allowed tracking child growth and setting feeding goals. Fathers were most interested in content about first foods, choking hazards, and nutrition information, while mothers preferred content on breastfeeding, picky eating, and portion sizes. Parents with lower incomes were interested in nutrition guidelines, breastfeeding, and introducing solids. Non-low-income parents preferred information related to food allergies, portion sizes, and picky eating. The findings of this study provide considerations when developing mHealth apps to improve responsive feeding practices in parents.
A New Wireless Sensorized Pacifier for Evaluating Infants’ Feeding Skills During the Non-nutritive Sucking

Abstract:One of the most significant procedures for getting the principal food to newborns within six months is nutritive sucking. On the other hand, developing the precise coordination of feeding skills actions under oral feeding is usually critical for premature infants and may affect the body and neural development of them. Thus, data collecting related to the oral feeding is useful for doctors who are seeking to make more accurate clinical diagnoses for related issues to oral feeding skills in preterm infants. There are different factors involved in the process of evaluating the feeding skills of infants, clinical experience of medical staffs is one of the most important ones. However, we still face a deficiency of monitoring systems for evaluating the feeding skills of infants quantitatively and objectively. In this study, an original wireless monitoring system is introduced to facilitate the process of evaluating the feeding behavior of infants both quantitatively and objectively. This unique monitoring system will also assess the process of analyzing the characteristics of oral feeding skills. Here, a specific measurer system was applied to monitor the sucking and expression pressure actions noninvasively. Based on the experimental results, the sucking rate and intensity increased by growing the infants. In contrast, the positive expression pressure decreased under the same condition. The proposed system successfully assessed the feeding behavior of infants. Furthermore, it can perform as an objective tool for evaluating oral feeding ability and identifying the risk of infant developmental delays in the future.
Responsive Feeding Practices to Promote Healthy Diets: A Mixed Method Study among Low-Income Caregivers with Toddlers

Abstract:Responsive feeding (RF), the reciprocal feeding approach between caregiver and child that promotes child health, is understudied among low-income caregivers. This mixed methods study with low-income caregivers of 12-to-36-month-olds aimed to (1) assess variability in RF and associations with children's dietary intake, and (2) explore caregivers' perceptions of RF. Caregivers (n = 134) completed an online survey with RF questions (n = 25), grouped into environmental (meal environment, caregiver modeling, caregiver beliefs) and child (self-regulation, hunger/satiety cues, food for reward, food acceptance) influences scores. Children's recent food group consumption was loaded onto healthy and less healthy intake scores. In an adjusted multiple linear regression analysis, greater RF scores for environmental and child influences were associated with greater healthy intake scores (p's < 0.01). Greater scores for environmental influences were also associated with lower scores for unhealthy intake (p < 0.01). From focus groups with a separate sample of caregivers (n = 24), thematic analysis uncovered that two themes aligned (trust in child cues, positive strategies to encourage children to eat non-preferred foods) and two misaligned (lack of trust in child cues, use of force/bribery) with RF. Complementary integration of quantitative and qualitative findings can inform future interventions with low-income caregivers, encouraging trust in young children's hunger/satiety cues and positive strategies for food acceptance to improve diet quality.

Abstract:Abstract Background In order to measure and understand trajectories of parental feeding practices and their relationship with child eating and weight, it is desirable to perform assessment from infancy and across time, in age-appropriate ways. While many feeding practices questionnaires exist, none is presently available that enables tracking of feeding practices from infancy through childhood. The aim of the study was to develop a version of the Feeding Practices and Structure Questionnaire (FPSQ) for parents with infants and toddlers (< 2 years) to be used in conjunction with the original FPSQ for older children (≥2 years) to measure feeding practices related to non-responsiveness and structure across childhood. Methods Constructs and items for the FPSQ for infants and toddlers were derived from the existing and validated FPSQ for older children and supplemented by a review of the literature on infant feeding questionnaires. Following expert review, two versions of the questionnaire were developed, one for milk feeding parents and one for solid feeding parents. Data from two studies were combined (child ages 0–24 months) to test the derived constructs with Confirmatory Factor Analysis for the milk feeding ( N = 731) and solid feeding ( N = 611) versions. Results The milk feeding version consisted of four factors (18 items) and showed acceptable model fit and good internal reliability: ‘feeding on demand vs. feeding routine’ (α = 0.87), ‘using food to calm’ (α = 0.87), ‘persuasive feeding’ (α = 0.71), ‘parent-led feeding’ (α = 0.79). The same four factors showed acceptable model fit for the solid feeding version (21 items), likewise with good internal reliability (α = 0.74, 0.86, 0.85, 0.84 respectively). Two additional factors (13 items) were developed for the solid feeding version that appeared developmentally appropriate only for children aged 12 months or older: ‘family meal environment’ (α = 0.81) and ‘using (non-)food rewards’ (α = 0.92). The majority of factor-factor correlations were in line with those of the original FPSQ. Conclusions The FPSQ milk and solid feeding versions are the first measures specifically developed as precursors to the FPSQ to measure parental feeding practices in children < 2 years, particularly practices related to non-responsiveness and structure. Further validation in more diverse samples is required.

Impact of the Growing Healthy mHealth Program on Maternal Feeding Practices, Infant Food Preferences, and Satiety Responsiveness: Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract:Background: Infancy is an important life stage for obesity prevention efforts. Parents' infant feeding practices influence the development of infants' food preferences and eating behaviors and subsequently diet and weight. Mobile health (mHealth) may provide a feasible medium through which to deliver programs to promote healthy infant feeding as it allows low cost and easy access to tailored content. Objective: The objective of this study was to describe the effects of an mHealth intervention on parental feeding practices, infant food preferences, and infant satiety responsiveness. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with an mHealth intervention group (Growing Healthy) and a nonrandomized comparison group ("Baby's First Food"). The intervention group received access to a free app with age-appropriate push notifications, a website, and an online forum that provided them with evidence-based advice on infant feeding for healthy growth from birth until 9 months of age. Behavior change techniques were selected using the Behaviour Change Wheel framework. Participants in both groups completed three Web-based surveys, first when their infants were less than 3 months old (baseline, T1), then at 6 months (time 2, T2), and 9 months of age (time 3, T3). Surveys included questions on infant feeding practices and beliefs (Infant Feeding Questionnaire, IFQ), satiety responsiveness (Baby Eating Behaviour Questionnaire), and infant's food exposure and liking. Multivariate linear regression models, estimated using maximum likelihood with bootstrapped standard errors, were fitted to compare continuous outcomes between the intervention groups, with adjustment for relevant covariates. Multivariate logistic regression adjusting for the same covariates was performed for categorical outcomes. Results: A total of 645 parents (Growing Healthy: n=301, Baby's First Food: n=344) met the eligibility criteria and were included in the study, reducing to a sample size of 546 (Growing Healthy: n=234, Baby's First Food: n=312) at T2 and a sample size of 518 (Growing Healthy: n=225, Baby's First Food: n=293) at T3. There were approximately equal numbers of boy and girl infants, and infants were aged less than 3 months at baseline (Growing Healthy: mean 7.0, SD 3.7 weeks; Baby's First Food: mean 7.9, SD 3.8 weeks), with Growing Healthy infants being slightly younger than Baby's First Food infants (P=.001). All but one (IFQ subscale "concerns about infant overeating or becoming overweight" at T2) of the measured outcomes did not differ between Growing Healthy and Baby's First Food. Conclusions: Although mHealth can be effective in promoting some health behaviors and offers many advantages in health promotion, the results of this study suggest that design and delivery characteristics needed to maximize the impact of mHealth interventions on infant feeding are uncertain. The sensitivity of available measurement tools and differences in baseline characteristics of participants may have also affected the results.
Subtle Signals: Video-based Detection of Infant Non-nutritive Sucking as a Neurodevelopmental Cue

Abstract:Non-nutritive sucking (NNS), which refers to the act of sucking on a pacifier, finger, or similar object without nutrient intake, plays a crucial role in assessing healthy early development. In the case of preterm infants, NNS behavior is a key component in determining their readiness for feeding. In older infants, the characteristics of NNS behavior offer valuable insights into neural and motor development. Additionally, NNS activity has been proposed as a potential safeguard against sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). However, the clinical application of NNS assessment is currently hindered by labor-intensive and subjective finger-in-mouth evaluations. Consequently, researchers often resort to expensive pressure transducers for objective NNS signal measurement. To enhance the accessibility and reliability of NNS signal monitoring for both clinicians and researchers, we introduce a vision-based algorithm designed for non-contact detection of NNS activity using baby monitor footage in natural settings. Our approach involves a comprehensive exploration of optical flow and temporal convolutional networks, enabling the detection and amplification of subtle infant-sucking signals. We successfully classify short video clips of uniform length into NNS and non-NNS periods. Furthermore, we investigate manual and learning-based techniques to piece together local classification results, facilitating the segmentation of longer mixed-activity videos into NNS and non-NNS segments of varying duration. Our research introduces two novel datasets of annotated infant videos, including one sourced from our clinical study featuring 19 infant subjects and 183 hours of overnight baby monitor footage.

Correlation between maternal eating disorder and early infant feeding regulation: a cross -sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Background The post-partum period is a vulnerable time for mothers in terms of eating disorder symptoms and is critical for the establishment of feeding patterns in infants. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between maternal eating disorder symptoms and objective indices of feeding regulation at 3 months, as well as perceived breastfeeding self-efficacy. Methods A sample of n = 73 full-term mother-child dyads (44% female) participated in the study. Mothers self-reported eating disorder symptoms and breastfeeding self-efficacy and objective indices of infant feeding regulation were obtained in the home. Results Findings revealed the existence of relationships between higher maternal eating disorder symptoms, and objective indices of infant feeding regulation with substantial gender differences in the patterns emerging. Among mother-daughter dyads, maternal weight and shape concerns were associated with higher infant transfer volume and rate during bottle feeding. In contrast, among mother-son dyads, higher maternal eating disorder symptoms, including weight, shape, and eating concern, were associated with lower infant transfer volume and rate as well as lower levels of proficiency while taking their bottle. Conclusion Relationships emerged between higher maternal eating disorder symptoms and feeding regulation with substantial gender differences in these patterns. Additional research clarifying the underlying mechanisms of these associations is warranted and further efforts should be directed towards supporting mothers during the postpartum period.

Abstract:Infant obesity and the rate of weight gain during infancy are significant public health concerns, but few studies have examined eating behaviors in infancy. Food cue responsivity has been described as a key contributor to obesity risk in school age children and adults, but has been rarely examined during infancy. The purpose of the current study was to test among 30 infants aged 6-12 months the hypotheses that infants would show greater interest in food versus non-food stimuli, and that greater birth weight, greater rate of weight gain during infancy, greater mother-reported food responsiveness, being formula versus breastmilk fed, and higher maternal body mass index, would each be associated with greater interest in the food versus non-food stimulus. Results showed that overall infants showed a preference for the food versus non-food stimulus. Preference for the food versus non-food stimulus was predicted by greater infant rate of weight gain since birth, greater maternal-reported infant food responsiveness, and having been exclusively formula-fed, but not by any other factor tested. Results are discussed with regard to theoretical implications for the study of infant obesity and applied prevention implications.

Measuring Mothers’ Warmth: Naïve Observers, Trained Coders, and Self-Reports

Abstract:Objective. The current research evaluated whether thin slicing, which involves brief observations of others’ behaviors, is useful in understanding maternal warmth in the context of mother-child interaction. Design. The extent to which naïve observers’ ratings based on brief observations correspond to other reports of maternal warmth as well as the predictive validity of such ratings were evaluated in 158 pairs of European American mothers and their early adolescent children engaged in a set of problem-solving activities in the laboratory. Naïve (untrained) observers provided ratings of mothers’ warmth based on the first 5 min of the dyadic interaction. Trained coders rated mothers’ behaviors based on the first 5 min as well as the full 15 min video using a behavioral coding system. Mothers and children reported on mothers’ warmth using surveys. Results. Naïve observers’ ratings were associated with trained coders’ ratings, but not with child or mother reports. Child reports of mothers’ warmth were associated with both subjective and objective measures of their academic functioning. Naïve observers’ ratings of mothers’ warmth were associated with an objective measure of children’s academic functioning. Conclusions. The correspondence between naïve observers’ and trained coders’ reports of mothers’ warmth warrants further investigation into the conditions under which less time- and labor-intensive methods, such as thin slicing, can be applied to assess parents’ expressive behaviors.

Abstract:The American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization recommend responsive feeding (RF) to promote healthy eating behaviors in early childhood. This project developed and tested a vicarious learning video to teach parents RF practices. A RF vicarious learning video was developed using community-based participatory research methods. Fifty parents of preschoolers were randomly assigned to watch Happier Meals or a control video about education. Knowledge and beliefs about RF practices were measured 1 week before and immediately after intervention. Experimental group participants also completed measures of narrative engagement and video acceptability. Seventy-four percent of the sample was White, 90% had at least a college degree, 96% were married, and 88% made >$50,000/year. RF knowledge increased ( p = .03) and positive beliefs about some unresponsive feeding practices decreased ( ps < .05) more among experimental than control parents. Knowledge and belief changes were associated with video engagement ( ps < .05). Parents perceived Happier Meals as highly relevant, applicable, and informative. Community-based participatory research methods were instrumental in developing this vicarious learning video, with preliminary evidence of effectiveness in teaching parents about RF. Happier Meals is freely available for parents or community health workers to use when working with families to promote healthy eating behaviors in early childhood.

Co-regulation of movements during infant feeding

Abstract:The process by which infants move from liquid feeding to caregiver-assisted spoon feeding of semi-solid food is quite a dramatic transition. In previous studies, we observed that in the weeks after the introduction to solid food, mother-infant dyads showed increased co-regulation and synchronization of their respective feeding behaviors (e.g. offering food, accepting/refusing, timing). Learning this new way of feeding and eating requires that infants coordinate their position and movements with the complementary position and movements of the caregiver. The present study augments the category-based analysis of this co-regulation by the analysis of coupling in the dyads based on automatically extracted movement data. Previously collected video data from 10 mother-infant dyads were re-analyzed for the purpose of this study. Movement trajectories of mother's hand and infant's face were obtained by applying an automatic movement detection algorithm (TLD, Kalal et al., 2012; for applications to mother-infant interactions see López Pérez et al., 2017). Coordination was assessed by the method of Diagonal Cross Recurrence Profiles (DCRP), which expresses the degree of synchronization at different time lags. Profiles for each dyad from two different occasions --with one visit in the first week of solid feeding and one approximately 4-5 weeks later-- were compared. The results showed that, on average, most synchronization occurred in the first visit at lag 0. In the second visit there was an average delay in synchronization of about 1 s, with leading behavior starting from the infant. This suggests that the coordination was initially closely synchronized and became somewhat looser over time. Possibly, infants have begun to anticipate and guide the feeding movements enacted by the mother. However, our findings underline the idiosyncratic and complex nature of co-regulation of movements during the introduction of solid food. Whereas some dyads showed signs of increased organization, others seemed to disorganize, re-organize, or showed no organization at all. Many (interacting) factors --both individual and contextual-- may be responsible for the observed differences between dyads. Further research is needed to understand why specific synchronization pathways emerge and whether and how these might relate both to later feeding and eating and to the emergent patterns of participation.
Cognitive Stimulation and Maternal Feeding Styles in Families with Low Incomes: Impacts from a Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract:Objective: To examine associations between cognitive stimulation in the home at 6 months and maternal feeding styles at 24 months, direct intervention effects of Smart Beginnings (SB) on feeding styles, and potential indirect effects of SB on feeding styles via earlier intervention effects on cognitive stimulation. Methods: Single-blind, two-site randomized clinical trial (RCT) of the SB intervention. SB integrates PlayReadVIP, a universal, pediatric primary care-based program, and Family Check-Up (FCU), a targeted secondary home-based parenting intervention. Mother-infant dyads (N = 327) were randomized at birth to standard pediatric care or the SB intervention. Linear regression analyses determined associations between cognitive stimulation at 6 months and maternal feeding styles at 24 months, a secondary data analysis. Direct intervention impacts on feeding styles, a secondary RCT outcome, were also assessed and mediation analyses explored intervention effects on feeding styles via earlier intervention impacts on cognitive stimulation. Results: Cognitive stimulation was significantly associated with higher responsive and lower indulgent feeding styles. SB mothers were less likely to exhibit pressuring styles compared with controls (Effect Size [ES]=-0.12, P = 0.02). Although no direct intervention effects were found on responsive or indulgent feeding styles, indirect effects of SB were evident on these feeding styles through intervention-induced increases in cognitive stimulation in the SB group. Conclusions: This study found positive linkages between cognitive stimulation in the home and later feeding styles. Additionally, the SB intervention was associated with less pressured feeding and indirect pathways mediated by intervention effects on cognitive stimulation. Implications for early childhood parenting interventions are discussed.
Anger Management and Factors that Influence Anger in Physicians

Abstract:Objective: There are limited data regarding anger and its management with respect to physicians and many other professionals. Our objective was to evaluate anger expression and control in physicians. Material and Methods: The physicians of the Duzce School of Medicine were the participants in the study. Physicians were assigned to either an internal medicine or a surgery study group. Each group contained physicians from several specialties. The Spielberger State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventories were administered to all participants. The physicians (n=158) were evaluated and compared with controls (n=105) in terms of anger control and sociodemographic variables. Results: Anger-control scores were higher in physicians (pl0.01) and in those who willingly chose the medical profession (pl0.05). Age, number of years as a physician, and the specialty were negatively correlated with anger management in physicians working in the surgical disciplines (pl0.01). Only Beck anxiety and depression scores were positively correlated with anger-trait scores and anger-in scores for physicians working in the internal medicine disciplines (pl0.01). Conclusion: Physicians were relatively successful in coping with anger. A willingness to choose the medical profession was a factor influencing anger control. Age was the major factor affecting anger management in physicians.
Study on the correlation between early feeding behaviors and physical development of infants

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to understand early feeding behaviors of infants under 3 months,in order to explore the relation between feeding behaviors and physical development.Methods A method of convenient sampling was performed to select 500 infants less than 3 months.The mothers of the infants were from Beijing and other places.The questionnaire was designed,and demographics and feeding behaviors information was obtained from respondent.Pediatricians measured infants" body to acquire physical development information.Results The median of feeding behavior score was 5.The proportion of low score group was 25.4％.The proportion of average score group was 35.0％.And the proportion of high score group was 39.6％.53.4％ of the infants had breast-feeding initiated within the first hour of birth.95.7％ of infants received colostrum.55.7％ were fed with bottles.Infant feeding behaviors were associated with maternal educational level,whether it is premature,and delivery way (P＜0.05).We found that feeding non-breast milk babies had a higher risk of underweight (OR=2.733,95％CI:1.346-5.551),and bottle-feeding babies were less likely to be overweight and obese (OR=0.331,95％CI:0.143-0.768).There was a lower chance of overweight in infants with other liquid food except breast milk (OR=0.538,95％CI:0.302-0.959).Bottle-feeding babies had a lower risk of overweight (OR=0.492,95％CI:0.275-0.882).Conclusion The proportion was high for infants with low scores of early feeding behavior scores.Low degree of mother culture,cesarean section,premature birth might be risk factors for infant feeding behaviors.Feeding non-breast milk infants were more likely to show underweight.The infants with bottle-feeding and other liquid food except breast milk had a lower risk of overweight and obese.
