Abstract:Background: Auditory-verbal training is essential for children with hearing challenges, and the gamification approach has become a promising direction for improving the rehabilitation experience and effect. However, the specific influence of the gamified training approach on participants at different rehabilitation stages has not been empirically studied, especially in the practical training effect caused by gamified interventions and the varying influence on children with different rehabilitation status. Objective: This article is thus intended to investigate the following research questions: (1) do the training performances of children at advanced rehabilitation stage differ before and after using the gamified training system? (2) Do the training performances of children at intermediate rehabilitation stage differ before and after using the gamified training system? (3) Do children enjoy the gamified training approach? Methods: For the purpose, a digital gamified auditory-verbal training system was originally developed, and a series of user experiments were organized. The training performance of 31 hearing-challenged children was assessed, and interviews with six professional therapists were conducted. Results: It can be found that generally the gamified training approach can effectively facilitate the training experience and help with the basic auditory memory and expression capabilities. Moreover, it is feasible to be applied in practical training due to the high customization of digital training contents, multimodal interactive training means, and highly enjoyable training experience. Conclusions: Regarding the specific influence, the gamified way can better improve the basic auditory-verbal performance of children at the intermediate stage since the focus is more on the ease of learning and adaption to the training system. While for children at the advanced rehabilitation stage, the precise training and professional training contents are more in demand, it is not easy to achieve quick improvements. These findings and conclusions can provide insights for further explorations and applications of the gamification approach in children's auditory-verbal rehabilitation. Abstract:Background: Cochlear implants are implanted hearing devices; instead of amplifying sounds like common hearing aids, this technology delivers preprocessed sound information directly to the hearing (ie, auditory) nerves. After surgery and the first cochlear implant activation, patients must practice interpreting the new auditory sensations, especially for language comprehension. This rehabilitation process is accompanied by hearing therapy through face-to-face training with a therapist, self-directed training, and computer-based auditory training. Objective: In general, self-directed, computer-based auditory training tasks have already shown advantages. However, compliance of cochlear implant recipients is still a major factor, especially for self-directed training at home. Hence, we aimed to explore the combination of 2 techniques to enhance learner motivation in this context: adaptive learning (in the form of an intelligent tutoring system) and game-based learning (in the form of a serious game). Methods: Following the suggestions of the evidence-centered design framework, a domain analysis of hearing therapy was conducted, allowing us to partially describe human hearing skill as a probabilistic competence model (Bayesian network). We developed an algorithm that uses such a model to estimate the current competence level of a patient and create training recommendations. For training, our developed task system was based on 7 language comprehension task types that act as a blueprint for generating tasks of diverse difficulty automatically. To achieve this, 1053 audio assets with meta-information labels were created. We embedded the adaptive task system into a graphic novel–like mobile serious game. German-speaking cochlear implant recipients used the system during a feasibility study for 4 weeks. Results: The 23 adult participants (20 women; 3 men) fulfilled 2259 tasks. In total, 2004 (90.5%) tasks were solved correctly, and 255 (9.5%) tasks were solved incorrectly. A generalized additive model analysis of these tasks indicated that the system adapted to the estimated competency levels of the cochlear implant recipients more quickly in the beginning than at the end. Compared with a uniform distribution of all task types, the recommended task types differed ( χ 2 6 =86.713; P <.001), indicating that the system selected specific task types for each patient. This is underlined by the identified categories for the error proportions of the task types. Conclusions: This contribution demonstrates the feasibility of combining an intelligent tutoring system with a serious game in cochlear implant rehabilitation therapies. The findings presented here could lead to further advances in cochlear implant care and aural rehabilitation in general. Exploring the effects of different BCI-based attention training games on the brain: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study

Abstract:BCI games have been widely employed as non-invasive therapeutic interventions for conditions, but their efficacy remains a subject of debate. This study explores the efficacy of two prevalent forms of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI)-based attention training games: video games (VG) and physical games (PG). The effectiveness of these games has been examined through the lens of neuroscience, using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor cortical activation. After the fNIRS test, subjects completed an Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) questionnaire. PG tasks activated six channels (L-PFC, R-PFC and R-TL), while VG tasks activated only one (R-PFC). Furthermore, females exhibited stronger activation during PG tasks, while males had none in either. Our findings suggest that under equivalent game rules and themes, PG may prove more effective for cognitive rehabilitation than VG, with stronger intrinsic motivation. We also found this result may exhibit gender differences. Finally, this research offers valuable insights for the future design of BCI-based games from a neuroscience perspective.

Abstract:Neurological or neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Parkinson's disease and dyslexia, can impair rhythm perception and production. Deficits in rhythm are associated with poor performance in language, attention, and working memory tasks. Research indicates that retraining rhythmic skills may enhance these related cognitive functions. In this context, using tactile aids for rhythm training emerges as a promising approach for children who do not fully benefit from conventional audiovisual rhythm games. This is because tactile aids can compensate for sensory deficiencies and facilitate more extensive brain activation. In our study, we employed functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to assess the impact of tactile aids on brain cortical activation during rhythmic training in children aged 6–12 years (N = 25). We also measured the participants' spontaneous motor rhythms. The findings indicate that tactile stimulation significantly improves performance in synchronized rhythm tasks compared to audiovisual stimulation alone, particularly enhancing activation in brain regions associated with speech training such as the prefrontal cortex, motor cortex, and temporal areas. These results not only support the application of rhythm training in speech rehabilitation, but also highlight the potential of tactile aids as an effective multisensory learning strategy.

Abstract:Music-based speech language interventions have shown promise to support young children with autism, other speech and language deficits, and Dual Language Learners (also known as DLL, English Language Learners, or ELL). Online edtech learning programs may produce greater positive outcomes for children by including parents as mediators of the intervention. This study measured the preliminary effectiveness of Sing and Speak 4 Kids (SS4Kids), a music-based online speech and language development game, administered to 26 children ages 2–6 years old with or at risk for a diagnosis of autism, other speech and language deficits or DLL. The children were trained in early intervention settings across 4–6 sessions over a 2-week period in one of three group conditions: (a) teacher only in clinic; (b) parent only at home; (c) both teacher + parent. Measurement of verbal production of target words in pre- and post-training sessions showed that trained words significantly improved from pre-test to post-test Additionally, there was no effect of different group conditions (teacher only vs. parent only vs. both teacher + parent) on children's performance. Results suggest that the SS4Kids program is an effective music-based speech and language training method for supporting target word production in young children across a two week timespan. Importantly, the results also found that group conditions did not influence the improvement, confirming effectiveness of both clinic and home-based parent mediation. During a time when traditional in-person intervention services may be restricted, the current work provides cautious but emerging evidence of the effectiveness of an online edtech evidence-based practice to support the speech and language outcomes for a variety of children in early intervention.

Abstract:A temperature sensor based on photonic crystal fiber filled with liquid and silver nanowires using surface plasmon resonance is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally in this paper. Numerical simulation shows that a blue shift is obtained when temperature increases, and the resonance wavelength and resonance intensity can be tuned effectively by adjusting the volume ratios of the liquid constituents. A large temperature range from 25°C to 60°C at different ratios is detected to investigate the sensor's performance, and the sensitivity -2.08 nm/°C with the figure of merit of 0.1572 is obtained by experiment. Moreover, with the all-fiber device with strong mechanical stability, it is easy to realize remote sensing by changing the downlead fiber length, which is promising for developing a high-sensitive, real-time, and distributed temperature sensor.

Abstract:Music therapy provides a good environment for the teaching of children with special needs, to study the application effect of game aids combined with listening music therapy on the teaching of children with special needs. Firstly, the hardware and content of the game accessories for music therapy are designed, and then the binaural difference frequency algorithm and adaptive filtering algorithm are improved. To enhance the binaural frequency difference and reduce computational complexity, the variable step size algorithm of the tongue line function incorporates the average absolute error. Additionally, the introduction of relevant vectors improves the signal-to-noise ratio for microphone or linear input signals within the variable step size algorithm of the tongue function. The results showed that the improved variable step size adaptive filtering algorithm of tongue function had better convergence and better steady-state error. Compared with the control group without real-time binaural differential frequency processing music, the relative power θ % of EEG in the experimental group was significantly reduced, and the sensory-motor rhythm% and β % were significantly increased after EEG-induced music therapy, and the θβ reduction reached an extremely significant level, only α % of the difference was not significant. The parents' behavior problems, learning problems, impulsivity/hyperactivity, and hyperactivity index were significantly reduced. The integration of listening and music therapy with game aids is beneficial for the teaching of special needs children and brings beneficial effects.

Abstract:Background: Articulation disorder decreases the clarity of language and causes a decrease in children's learning and social ability. The demand for non-face-to-face treatment is increasing owing to the limited number of therapists and geographical or economic constraints. Non-face-to-face speech therapy programs using serious games have been proposed as an alternative. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy of home therapy on logopedic and phoniatric abilities in children with articulation disorder using the Smart Speech game interface. Methods: This study is a prospective single-arm clinical trial. Children with articulation disorders, whose Urimal Test of Articulation and Phonology (U-TAP) was -2 SDs or less and the Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test score was -1 SD or more, were enrolled. A preliminary evaluation (E0) was conducted to check whether the children had articulation disorders, and for the next 4 weeks, they lived their usual lifestyle without other treatments. Prior to the beginning of the training, a pre-evaluation (E1) was performed, and the children trained at home for ≥30 minutes per day, ≥5 times a week, over 4 weeks (a total of 20 sessions). The Smart Speech program comprised oral exercise training, breathing training, and speech training; the difficulty and type of the training were configured differently according to the participants' articulation error, exercise, and vocal ability. After the training, postevaluation (E2) was performed using the same method. Finally, 8 weeks later, postevaluation (E3) was performed as a follow-up. A voice evaluation included parameters such as maximum phonation time (MPT), fundamental frequency (F0), jitter, peak air pressure (relative average perturbation), pitch, intensity, and voice onset time. Articulation parameters included a percentage of correct consonants (PCC; U-TAP word-unit PCC, U-TAP sentence-unit PCC, and three-position articulation test) and alternate motion evaluation (diadochokinesis, DDK). Data obtained during each evaluation (E1-E2-E3) were compared. Results: A total of 13 children with articulation disorders aged 4-10 years were enrolled in the study. In voice parameters, MPT, jitter, and pitch showed significant changes in repeated-measures ANOVA. However, only MPT showed significant changes during E1-E2 (P=.007) and E1-E3 (P=.004) in post hoc tests. Other voice parameters did not show significant changes. In articulation parameters, U-TAP, three-position articulation test (TA), and DDK showed significant changes in repeated-measures ANOVA. In post hoc tests, U-TAP (word, sentence) and TA showed significant changes during E1-E2 (P=.003, .04, and .01) and E1-E3 (P=.001, .03, and .003), and DDK showed significant changes during E1-E2 only (P=.03). Conclusions: Home-based serious games can be considered an alternative treatment method to improve language function. Comparison of Two Music Training Approaches on Music and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users

Abstract:In normal-hearing (NH) adults, long-term music training may benefit music and speech perception, even when listening to spectro-temporally degraded signals as experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users. In this study, we compared two different music training approaches in CI users and their effects on speech and music perception, as it remains unclear which approach to music training might be best. The approaches differed in terms of music exercises and social interaction. For the pitch/timbre group, melodic contour identification (MCI) training was performed using computer software. For the music therapy group, training involved face-to-face group exercises (rhythm perception, musical speech perception, music perception, singing, vocal emotion identification, and music improvisation). For the control group, training involved group nonmusic activities (e.g., writing, cooking, and woodworking). Training consisted of weekly 2-hr sessions over a 6-week period. Speech intelligibility in quiet and noise, vocal emotion identification, MCI, and quality of life (QoL) were measured before and after training. The different training approaches appeared to offer different benefits for music and speech perception. Training effects were observed within-domain (better MCI performance for the pitch/timbre group), with little cross-domain transfer of music training (emotion identification significantly improved for the music therapy group). While training had no significant effect on QoL, the music therapy group reported better perceptual skills across training sessions. These results suggest that more extensive and intensive training approaches that combine pitch training with the social aspects of music therapy may further benefit CI users.

Abstract:Older children and teenagers with bilateral cochlear implants often have poor spatial hearing because they cannot fuse sounds from the two ears. This deficit jeopardizes speech and language development, education, and social well-being. The lack of protocols for fitting bilateral cochlear implants and resources for spatial-hearing training contribute to these difficulties. Spatial hearing develops with bilateral experience. A large body of research demonstrates that sound localisation can improve with training, underpinned by plasticity-driven changes in the auditory pathways. Generalizing training to non-trained auditory skills is best achieved by using a multi-modal (audio-visual) implementation and multi-domain training tasks (localisation, speech-in-noise, and spatial music). The goal of this work was to develop a package of virtual-reality games (BEARS, Both EARS) to train spatial hearing in young people (8-16 years) with bilateral cochlear implants using an action-research protocol. The action research protocol used formalized cycles for participants to trial aspects of the BEARS suite, reflect on their experiences, and in turn inform changes in the game implementations. This participatory design used the stakeholder participants as co-creators. The cycles for each of the three domains (localisation, spatial speech-in-noise, and spatial music) were customized to focus on the elements that the stakeholder participants considered important. The participants agreed that the final games were appropriate and ready to be used by patients. The main areas of modification were: the variety of immersive scenarios to cover age range and interests, the number of levels of complexity to ensure small improvements were measurable, feedback, and reward schemes to ensure positive reinforcement, and an additional implementation on an iPad for those who had difficulties with the headsets due to age or balance issues. The effectiveness of the BEARS training suite will be evaluated in a large-scale clinical trial to determine if using the games lead to improvements in speech-in-noise, quality of life, perceived benefit, and cost utility. Such interventions allow patients to take control of their own management reducing the reliance on outpatient-based rehabilitation. For young people, a virtual-reality implementation is more engaging than traditional rehabilitation methods, and the participatory design used here has ensured that the BEARS games are relevant.
An Interactive Computer Game for Improving Selective Voluntary Motor Control in Children With Upper Motor Neuron Lesions: Development and Preliminary Feasibility Study

Abstract:Background Computer game–based interventions are emerging in pediatric neurorehabilitation, as they can provide two key elements for motor learning—motivating environments that enable long-term compliance, which is particularly relevant for children, and augmented feedback for improving movement performance. Objective The overall aim of this study is to develop an interactive computer play for children with upper motor neuron lesions to train selective voluntary motor control and give particular attention to motivation and feedback. We also aim to determine features that make games engaging, investigate which sensory feedback modality is noticed the fastest during play, develop an interactive game, and evaluate its feasibility. Methods We identified engaging game features by interviewing 19 children and adolescents undergoing rehabilitation. By using a test version of the game, we determined the response times of 10 patients who had to react to visual, auditory, or combined feedback signals. On the basis of the results of these two subprojects, we developed and designed a game environment. Feasibility was studied in terms of the practicability and acceptability of the intervention among 5 children with upper motor neuron lesions. Results The game features deemed the most important by pediatric patients were strategic gameplay (13/29, 45% of answers) and choice (6/29, 21%). While playing the game, an acoustic alarm signal (reaction time: median 2.8 seconds) was detected significantly faster (P=.01) than conditions with other feedback modalities (avatar velocity reduction: median 7.8 seconds; color desaturation: median 5.7 seconds). Most children enjoyed playing the game, despite some technical issues. Conclusions The careful identification of game features that increase motivation and feedback modalities that inform children quickly led to the development of an interactive computer play for training selective voluntary motor control in children and adolescents with upper motor neuron lesions.

Application of a Brain–Computer Interface System with Visual and Motor Feedback in Limb and Brain Functional Rehabilitation after Stroke: Case Report

Abstract:(1) Objective: To investigate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of a brain–computer interface (BCI) system with visual and motor feedback in limb and brain function rehabilitation after stroke. (2) Methods: First, we recruited three hemiplegic stroke patients to perform rehabilitation training using a BCI system with visual and motor feedback for two consecutive days (four sessions) to verify the feasibility and safety of the system. Then, we recruited five other hemiplegic stroke patients for rehabilitation training (6 days a week, lasting for 12–14 days) using the same BCI system to verify the effectiveness. The mean and Cohen’s w were used to compare the changes in limb motor and brain functions before and after training. (3) Results: In the feasibility verification, the continuous motor state switching time (CMSST) of the three patients was 17.8 ± 21.0s, and the motor state percentages (MSPs) in the upper and lower limb training were 52.6 ± 25.7% and 72.4 ± 24.0%, respectively. The effective training revolutions (ETRs) per minute were 25.8 ± 13.0 for upper limb and 24.8 ± 6.4 for lower limb. There were no adverse events during the training process. Compared with the baseline, the motor function indices of the five patients were improved, including sitting balance ability, upper limb Fugel–Meyer assessment (FMA), lower limb FMA, 6 min walking distance, modified Barthel index, and root mean square (RMS) value of triceps surae, which increased by 0.4, 8.0, 5.4, 11.4, 7.0, and 0.9, respectively, and all had large effect sizes (Cohen’s w ≥ 0.5). The brain function indices of the five patients, including the amplitudes of the motor evoked potentials (MEP) on the non-lesion side and lesion side, increased by 3.6 and 3.7, respectively; the latency of MEP on the non-lesion side was shortened by 2.6 ms, and all had large effect sizes (Cohen’s w ≥ 0.5). (4) Conclusions: The BCI system with visual and motor feedback is applicable in active rehabilitation training of stroke patients with hemiplegia, and the pilot results show potential multidimensional benefits after a short course of treatment.

Abstract:Background: A cochlear implant (CI) enables deaf people to understand speech but due to technical restrictions, users face great limitations in noisy conditions. Music training has been shown to augment shared auditory and cognitive neural networks for processing speech and music and to improve auditory-motor coupling, which benefits speech perception in noisy listening conditions. These are promising prerequisites for studying multi-modal neurologic music training (NMT) for speech-in-noise (SIN) perception in adult cochlear implant (CI) users. Furthermore, a better understanding of the neurophysiological correlates when performing working memory (WM) and SIN tasks after multi-modal music training with CI users may provide clinicians with a better understanding of optimal rehabilitation. Methods: Within 3 months, 81 post-lingual deafened adult CI recipients will undergo electrophysiological recordings and a four-week neurologic music therapy multi-modal training randomly assigned to one of three training focusses (pitch, rhythm, and timbre). Pre- and post-tests will analyze behavioral outcomes and apply a novel electrophysiological measurement approach that includes neural tracking to speech and alpha oscillation modulations to the sentence-final-word-identification-and-recall test (SWIR-EEG). Expected outcome: Short-term multi-modal music training will enhance WM and SIN performance in post-lingual deafened adult CI recipients and will be reflected in greater neural tracking and alpha oscillation modulations in prefrontal areas. Prospectively, outcomes could contribute to understanding the relationship between cognitive functioning and SIN besides the technical deficits of the CI. Targeted clinical application of music training for post-lingual deafened adult CI carriers to significantly improve SIN and positively impact the quality of life can be realized.

Abstract:Background: The increasing need for speech therapy due to our ageing population raises the demand on therapeutical resources. To meet this demand, innovative delivery of speech training is required. eHealth applications may provide a solution, as intensified and prolonged training is only possible and affordable in patients' home environment. Aims: This study explores the effects on speech intelligibility of game-based speech training that provides automatic feedback on loudness, pitch and pronunciation. Additionally, we investigate how satisfied patients are with the game-based speech training and how they experience the automatic feedback. Furthermore, patients' preferences for game-based speech training compared with face-to-face training are explored. Methods and procedures: Eight adult dysarthric speakers with Parkinson's disease (PD) completed a 4-week game-based speech training in their home environment. For each speaker, 24 speech utterances were audio recorded 4 weeks before (T1), immediately before (T2) and immediately after (T3) the training. All speech samples were rated on speech intelligibility by 10 untrained listeners, by comparing them with the corresponding utterances realized by a healthy speaker. Changes over time were analysed using a linear mixed-effects analysis. Patient satisfaction with the game and the automatic feedback was assessed using a questionnaire. The preferences of patients were collected using a paired comparisons procedure in which the patients were asked whether they would prefer game-based or face-to-face speech training in four hypothetical scenarios with different hypothesized levels of speech improvement. Outcomes and results: While there was no significant difference in speech intelligibility ratings between T1 and T2, we did find one between T2 and T3. At T3, speech intelligibility was rated higher than at T2, indicating positive effects of the game-based speech training. Patients generally seemed satisfied with the game as average ratings were above 7 on a 10-point rating scale. Generally, patients agreed with the automatic feedback and could use it to positively change the way they spoke. Patients prefer the training that provides the highest hypothetical improvement, and thus do not prefer face-to-face above game-based therapy. Conclusions and implications: The results of this study suggest that dysarthric speakers due to PD see game-based speech therapy as a valid alternative for face-to-face therapy and that it leads to an average improvement in speech intelligibility. For an optimal effect and user satisfaction it should preferably not be used in isolation but in combination with face-to-face training. In this manner, the strengths of both therapeutic deliveries can be harnessed. What this paper adds: What is already known on this subject Dysarthric speech in patients with PD is known to benefit from intensified and long-term speech therapy. A drill-and-practice method was employed and investigated in a web-based speech application, indicating positive effects on speech intelligibility. However, participants indicated a lack of variation in exercises making the training less enjoyable. Other research showed that serious games can increase enjoyment during training. What this paper adds to existing knowledge The results of this study show that it is possible to develop a serious game that can be successfully used for speech training by patients with dysarthria due to PD. Comparing speech intelligibility ratings before and after training, we observed significant improvements in speech intelligibility ratings. Patients generally agree with the automatic feedback and can use it to positively change the way they speak. Average ratings were above 7 on a 10-point scale, indicating that patients are satisfied with the game. Patients prefer the type of training (game based or face to face) that provides the highest hypothetical improvement. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? The results of this study suggest that game-based speech training can improve speech intelligibility in patients. This indicates that it can be considered a suitable approach in the treatment of patients with dysarthria due to PD. Patients do not prefer game-based training above face-to-face training in all scenarios. For that reason, for every patient one should carefully consider how to optimally combine game-based and face-to-face training.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are being investigated as an access pathway to communication for individuals with physical disabilities, as the technology obviates the need for voluntary motor control. However, to date, minimal research has investigated the use of BCIs for children. Traditional BCI communication paradigms may be suboptimal given that children with physical disabilities may face delays in cognitive development and acquisition of literacy skills. Instead, in this study we explored emotional state as an alternative access pathway to communication. We developed a pediatric BCI to identify positive and negative emotional states from changes in hemodynamic activity of the prefrontal cortex (PFC). To train and test the BCI, 10 neurotypical children aged 8–14 underwent a series of emotion-induction trials over four experimental sessions (one offline, three online) while their brain activity was measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Visual neurofeedback was used to assist participants in regulating their emotional states and modulating their hemodynamic activity in response to the affective stimuli. Child-specific linear discriminant classifiers were trained on cumulatively available data from previous sessions and adaptively updated throughout each session. Average online valence classification exceeded chance across participants by the last two online sessions (with 7 and 8 of the 10 participants performing better than chance, respectively, in Sessions 3 and 4). There was a small significant positive correlation with online BCI performance and age, suggesting older participants were more successful at regulating their emotional state and/or brain activity. Variability was seen across participants in regards to BCI performance, hemodynamic response, and discriminatory features and channels. Retrospective offline analyses yielded accuracies comparable to those reported in adult affective BCI studies using fNIRS. Affective fNIRS-BCIs appear to be feasible for school-aged children, but to further gauge the practical potential of this type of BCI, replication with more training sessions, larger sample sizes, and end-users with disabilities is necessary.

Abstract:Due to limited spectral resolution, cochlear implants (CIs) do not convey pitch information very well. Pitch cues are important for perception of music and tonal language; it is possible that music training may improve performance in both listening tasks. In this study, we investigated music training outcomes in terms of perception of music, lexical tones, and sentences in 22 young (4.8 to 9.3 years old), prelingually deaf Mandarin-speaking CI users. Music perception was measured using a melodic contour identification (MCI) task. Speech perception was measured for lexical tones and sentences presented in quiet. Subjects received 8 weeks of MCI training using pitch ranges not used for testing. Music and speech perception were measured at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after training was begun; follow-up measures were made 4 weeks after training was stopped. Mean baseline performance was 33.2%, 76.9%, and 45.8% correct for MCI, lexical tone recognition, and sentence recognition, respectively. After 8 weeks of MCI training, mean performance significantly improved by 22.9, 14.4, and 14.5 percentage points for MCI, lexical tone recognition, and sentence recognition, respectively (p < .05 in all cases). Four weeks after training was stopped, there was no significant change in posttraining music and speech performance. The results suggest that music training can significantly improve pediatric Mandarin-speaking CI users' music and speech perception.

Abstract:Both motor and cognitive function rehabilitation benefits can be improved significantly by patients' active participation. To this goal, an attention enhancement system based on the brain–computer interface (BCI) and audiovisual feedback is proposed. First, an interactive position-tracking riding game is designed to increase the training challenge and neural engagement. Subjects were asked to drive one of the avatars to keep up with another by adjusting their riding speed and attention. Second, the subject's electroencephalogram (EEG)-based attention level is divided into three regions (low, moderate, and high) by using the theta-to-beta ratio (TBR). According to the subject's attention states, different speed adjustment strategies are adopted to adjust the tracking challenge and improve the subject's attention. Besides, if the subject's attention focused on the training is moderate or low, an auditory feedback will be given to remind the subject to pay more attention to the training. The contrast experimental results show that subjects' performance indicated by overall attention level and average muscle activation can be improved significantly by using the attention enhancement system, which validates the feasibility of the proposed system for improving the neural and motor engagement.

Abstract:The primary source of information that clinicians use when evaluating and managing patients with cancer is the surgical pathology report. Omission of critical information from the report is a recognized problem in pathology, especially considering the expanding amount of information, such as molecular diagnostics data, that is now routinely included in reports. To standardize surgical pathology reports, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) introduced the CAP checklists. In 2004, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer mandated that 90% of pathology reports indicating a cancer diagnosis at participating centers contain all scientifically validated or regularly used data elements. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center has implemented synoptic reporting based on the CAP checklists for all major tumor types. We report our experience with synoptic reporting on head and neck neoplasms, demonstrating, in particular, how this can be customized according to needs of each institution.
