Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked byN,N '-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%-250% tensile strain and 0%-30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.

Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.
In Situ Synthesis of Mechanically Robust, Transparent Nanofiber‐Reinforced Hydrogels for Highly Sensitive Multiple Sensing

Abstract:Hydrogels that are both highly conductive and mechanically robust have demonstrated great potential in various applications ranging from healthcare to soft robotics; however, the creation of such materials remains an enormous challenge. This study presents an in situ synthesis strategy for developing bioinspired chemically integrated silica-nanofiber-reinforced hydrogels (SFRHs) with robust mechanical and electronic performance. The strategy is to synthesize soft hydrogel matrices from acrylamide monomers in the presence of well-dispersed silica nanofibers and vinyl silane, which generates homogenous SFRHs with innovative interfacial chemical bonds. The resultant SFRHs exhibit excellent mechanical properties including high mechanical strength of 0.3 MPa at a fracture strain of 1400%, high Young's modulus of 0.11 MPa (comparable to human skin), and superelasticity over 1000 tensile cycles without plastic deformation, while maintaining high transmittance (≥83%). In parallel, the SFRHs show enhanced ionic conductivity (3.93 S m−1) and can monitor multiple stimuli (stretching, compressing, and bending) with high sensitivity (gauge factor of 2.67) and ultra-durability (10 000 cycles). This work may shed light on the design and development of tough and stretchable hydrogels for various applications.

Abstract:Regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) hydrogels have been extensively studied in the fields of biomedicine and wearable devices in recent years due to their outstanding biocompatibility. However, the pure RSF hydrogels usually exhibited frangibility and low ductility, limiting their application in many aspects severely. Herein, we demonstrate a tough RSF/poly (N, N-dimethylallylamine) hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating network, which possesses good mechanical properties with high stretchability (εb = 900%), tensile strength (σb = 101.7 kPa), toughness (Wf = 516.7 kJ/m3) and tearing fracture energy (T = 407.3 J/m2). Besides, the gels show low residual strain in the cyclic tests and rapid self-recovery (80% toughness recovery within 5 min with the maximum strain of 400%). Moreover, the gels also show high ionic conductivity due to the incorporation of the NaCl and the hydrogel can act as an ideal candidate for strain sensor with high sensitivity (GF = 1.84), admirable linearity, and good durability (1000 cycles with the strain of 100%). When used as a wearable strain sensor for monitoring human movements, it also can detect small and large deformations with high sensitivity. It is expected that this work can provide a new strategy for the fabrication of smart RSF-based hydrogels and expand their application in multiple scenarios.

Abstract:Integration of both excellent mechanical performance and remarkable durability into composite hydrogel materials is highly demanded yet challenging. Herein, a synergistic strategy of combining covalent crosslinks with nanosheet-reinforced dynamic interactions is developed for the design and fabrication of deformable and recoverable nanocomposite hydrogels. Layered double hydroxide nanosheets and a trace amount of covalent crosslinks are simultaneously incorporated into the network, providing profound synergy in mechanical enhancement and durability extension. The resultant materials displayed high deformability (stretchability >1100%, compressibility >90%), considerable springiness and resilience, rapid and excellent recovery over 2000 cycles of compression and retraction as well as a 100% hysteresis ratio after only 1 min during large stretching. Notably, these networks are also transparent and ionically conductive. To demonstrate the utility, a wearable strain sensor is constructed for sensing and detecting human motions (e.g., subtle movement of mouth-opening and large motion of joint-bending), exhibiting a linear response with high sensitivity (gauge factor as high as 7.66) over 100-300% strain. This line of research will inspire renewed interest and work into synergic exploitation of nanospecies-reinforced interactions and covalent crosslinks into the design of high-performance composite materials.

Abstract:Although conductive and elastic materials are increasingly required for strain or stress sensing application in wearable electronic devices, it remains a great challenge to achieve outstanding and balanced mechanical performance while retaining high conductivity. Herein, the development of an ionic/electronic conductive hydrogel with mechanically robustness for strain sensors is reported. A covalently cross-linked polymer network is highly enhanced by a synergy of nano-enhancement (cellulose nanofibrils) and dynamic interactions containing hydrogen bonding and ionic coordination, which is used to support the mechanical structure of the hydrogel. By decorating with polypyrrole molecules via Fe 3+ induced in-situ polymerization, the integrity of network structure is further improved by constructing physical interactions and chain entanglement. Therefore, compared to virgin poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) hydrogel, the obtained hydrogel exhibits prominent mechanical performance containing high tensile strength (2.54 MPa) and ultra-high toughness (17.71 MJ m −3 ) along with remarkable stretchability (925%). Apart from Establishing a fair balance among mechanical parameters, a hybrid conductive path composed of ionic and electronic mechanism is also constructed simultaneously that results in an improved conductivity (995 mS m −1 ), wide working range (≈873%) and high sensitivity (maximum gauge factor: 25.6). Thus, the combination of outstanding mechanical performance and sensitive strain response makes the conductive hydrogel prepared herein apply for mechanically reliable and flexible strain sensor that can monitor diverse mechanical deformation (e.g., human joint movement) reflected by real-time resistance variation. Clearly, this work provides a new perspective for the design and fabrication of advanced gel-based materials aiming at high performance in human motion detection.

Intermolecular interaction simultaneously mediated network morphology and β-sheet crystallization of silk fibroin/polyacrylamide hydrogel for its excellent adhesive strain sensing performances

Abstract:Silk fibroin (SF), as a special natural polymer, is a good candidate for preparing flexible sensor due to its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability and amphiphilic properties. However, the high and uncontrollable crystallization of SF makes it challenge to be utilized in excellent biomimetic SF hydrogel sensor. Neat SF hydrogel is brittle and not adhesive. Here, polyacrylamide (PAM) was introduced to the SF hydrogel to address this issue. Due to their strong intermolecular interaction, the network morphology of SF/PAM hydrogel was altered to non-Euclidean pore from Euclidean one. Meanwhile, its β-sheet crystallization was suppressed to nanoscale readily. These evolutions endow the SF/PAM hydrogel with not only enhanced mechanical properties but also excellent adhesion performance. Compared with that of neat PAM hydrogel, tensile strength, tensile failure strain, compressive strength (under 80% strain) and adhesion performance (on pig skin) of the SF8/PAM hydrogel are increased by 133.1%, 120.9%, 610.8% and 104.8%, respectively. Additionally, the amphiphilicity of SF could make the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) disperse well in hydrogel. CNT0.3/SF8/PAM hydrogel not only inherits but also improves the above properties. It exhibits excellent adhesive sensing performance with maximal gauge factor of 10.13, working strain range of 1000% and stability as long as over 500 cycles. The detection of six human activities was also demonstrated. This work affords a general strategy to achieve high-performance SF-based hydrogel and indicates that the SF/PAM hydrogel possesses great promise for applications in flexible wearable strain sensors.

Simple Fabrication of Silica Amino Sphere-Reinforced Ionic Liquids/Graphene Conductive Hydrogel Sensors with Super Toughness, Self-Healing, and Strain Sensitivity Properties

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have gained considerable interest in their potential applications in fields such as soft robotics, electronic devices, and wearable technology. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the inherent brittleness of conventional hydrogels. In response to this challenge, we have engineered a multifunctional conductive hydrogel, characterized by dual physical cross-linking networks, using a simple, one-pot method. Our design incorporates acrylamide (AM), lauryl methacrylate (LMA), graphene (GN), silica amino spheres (SiO2-NH2), and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazole chloride (ILs). Notably, the LMA, SiO2-NH2 spheres, and AM play key roles in energy dissipation through hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonding, serving as dynamic cross-linking points. This structural configuration endows our resultant PAM@SiO2-NH2/(ILs-GN) hydrogels with impressive tensile strains, peaking at an extraordinary 15,318%, along with super toughness measuring 51.4 MJ/m3 and self-healing capabilities. Moreover, the ILs facilitate effective dispersion of graphene, leading to superior conductivity and stable resistance changes in the hydrogel, with a conductivity measurement of 12 mS/cm. The hydrogel also demonstrates high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 18.94 at a strain of 1200%. When implemented as a strain sensor, the hydrogel capably monitors a broad spectrum of human movements in real time, capturing both large-scale deformation and minute, nuanced motions. The culmination of these findings suggests the immense potential of our hydrogel sensors for use in flexible electronic skin applications, establishing them as promising candidates for multifunctional sensors and flexible electrodes.

Abstract:A DLP‐printable silk fibroin‐based hydrogel system with tunable adhesive and mechanical property is developed. Good water‐retention property is achieved for long‐term usage with the addition of glycerol. Through adding conductive ions, high ionic conductivity can also be achieved. Based on the integrated multifunctionalities, the hydrogel is suitable for wearable strain sensors to detect various body motions. Hydrogel‐based wearable strain sensors have recently gained considerable interest due to their promising applications in real‐time health monitoring and motion detection. However, achieving integrated high‐stretchability, self‐adhesiveness, and long‐term water‐retaining property simultaneously in hydrogel systems remains a big challenge, which limits their applications in wearable electronics. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel material designed is proposed for wearable strain sensors that can be manufactured by digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology. By tailoring the composition of chemically cross‐linked networks (ploy(acrylamide)/poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate), physically cross‐linked networks (ploy(acrylamide)/poly(acrylic acid)/poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate/silk fibroin/glycerol/water) and microstructures on the surface, the 3D printed hydrogel exhibits promising superior and adjustable mechanical properties, tunable adhesion and good water‐retaining property simultaneously. In addition, through adding conductive ions, high ionic conductivity can also be achieved for stretchable sensing applications. Based on these integrated multifunctionalities, the 3D printed hydrogel is suitable for wearable strain sensors to detect various body motions. This work provides a prospect for 3D printable hydrogel systems with broad applications in wearable electronics.

Abstract:In recent years, hydrogel-based soft electronics have been developed for the application of human motion, flexible robots and foldable displays. However, most existing conductive hydrogels have low toughness, single electron conduction or ionic conduction and poor adaptability towards complex applications. In this work, we obtained the toughness fiber-like hydrogel in three steps by doping nanofillers, directional extrusion freezing, and salting out. The proposed tough fiber-like hydrogel has a rich porous structure, which is achieved by doping the hydrophilic graphene nanosheets (HGNs) into a physically cross-linking polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel matrix. Directional extrusion freezing and salting out effect endow fiber-like hydrogel with better orientation ultimate nominal stress (∼9.5 MPa) and nominal strain (∼2200%). Meanwhile, the abundant porous structure facilitates ion migration and greatly enhances the ionic conductivity (up to 2.8 S m − 1 , at f = 1 MHz) of the hydrogel. The presence of HGNs endows the fiber-like hydrogel with excellent electronic conduction properties. Moreover, the weaving strategy is proposed to fabricate fiber-like hydrogel into hydrogel fabric film, which is effective for increased safety of stress-induced deformation and crack propagation. The woven hydrogel mesh bag can lift 6 kg of watermelon and the woven hydrogel net can bear a top-down weight impact of 1 kg. We also develop a novel type of woven hydrogel glove that can monitor complex hand movement. This work will provide new insight into the design of multifunctional materials with applications on electronic skin, wearable devices, and health monitoring.

Abstract:In this study, we address the challenge of developing highly conductive hydrogels with enhanced stretchability for use in wearable sensors, which are critical for the precise detection of human motion and subtle physiological strains. Our novel approach utilizes amylopectin, a biopolymer, for the uniform integration of liquid metal gallium into the hydrogel matrix. This integration results in a conductive hydrogel characterized by remarkable elasticity (up to 7100 % extensibility) and superior electrical conductance (Gauge Factor = 31.4), coupled with a minimal detection limit of less than 0.1 % and exceptional durability over 5000 cycles. The hydrogel demonstrates significant antibacterial activity, inhibiting microbial growth in moist environments, thus enhancing its applicability in medical settings. Employing a synthesis process that involves ambient condition polymerization of acrylic acid, facilitated by a hydrophobic associative framework, this hydrogel stands out for its rapid gelation and robust mechanical properties. The potential applications of this hydrogel extend beyond wearable sensors, promising advancements in human-computer interaction through technologies like wireless actuation of robotic systems. This study not only introduces a viable material for current wearable technologies but also sets a foundation for future innovations in bio-compatible sensors and interactive devices.

Hybrid nano-microstructured and bioinspired conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in-situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built by AM-based network, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant property. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor owned high sensitivity with a guage factor (GF) up to 8.35 at strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting huaman movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.

Abstract:The conductive hydrogels always suffered from high internal friction, large hysteresis, and low capability of accurately predicting physical deformation, which seriously restricted their application in smart wearable devices. To address these problems, solvent molecules are directionally inserted into the polymer molecule chains via bridge effect to effectively reduce the molecular internal friction. Moreover, swelling is also combined to eliminate the temporary entanglements in the hydrogel system. The cooperation between the bridge and swollen effect endows the prepared polyacrylamide (PAM)/laponite/H3BO3/ethylene glycol (Eg) organohydrogel (PLBOH) ultralow hysteresis (1.38%, ε = 100%), ultrafast response (≈10 ms), and high linearity in the whole‐strain‐range (R2 = 0.996) with a great sensitivity (GF = 2.68 at the strain range of 0–750%). Meanwhile, the prepared PL10B30OH exhibits long‐term stability, excellent stretchability, and low dissipated energy. Furthermore, the assembled triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) displays an outstanding energy harvesting performance with an output voltage of 200 V with the size of 20 mm × 20 mm. The assembled strain sensors can monitor the small strain of facial expressions and large strain of human movements, indicating the tremendous applications in self‐powered intelligent and flexible wearable electronics under harsh environmental conditions. An innovative method is developed to prepare the hydrogel via bridge effect to directionally insert solvent molecules into the hydrogel, which effectively acts as lubricate to reduce the molecular internal friction. The developed hydrogel exhibits ultralow‐hysteresis, ultrafast‐response, and whole‐strain‐range linearity contributed by the special molecular structure, which also holds great potential in flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:The rapid development of flexible sensors has greatly increased the demand for high-performance hydrogels. However, it remains a challenge to fabricate flexible hydrogel sensors with high stretching, low hysteresis, excellent adhesion, good conductivity, sensing characteristics and bacteriostatic function in a simple way. Herein, a highly conducting double network hydrogel is presented by incorporating lithium chloride (LiCl) into the hydrogel consisting of poly (2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid/acrylamide/acrylic acid) (3A) network and acetylated distarch phosphate (ADSP). The addition of ADSP not only formed hydrogen bonds with 3A to improve the toughness of the hydrogel but also plays the role of "physical cross-linking" in 3A by "anchoring" the polymer molecular chains together. Tuning the composition of the hydrogel allows the attainment of the best functions, such as high stretchability (~770 %), ultralow hysteresis (2.2 %, ε = 100 %), excellent electrical conductivity (2.9 S/m), strain sensitivity (GF = 3.0 at 200–500 % strain) and fast response (96 ms). Based on the above performance, the 3A/ADSP/LiCl hydrogel strain sensor can repeatedly and stably detect and monitor large-scale human movements and subtle sensing signals. In addition, the 3A/ADSP/LiCl hydrogel shows a good biocompatibility and bacteriostatic ability. This work provides an effective strategy for constructing the conductive hydrogels for wearable devices and flexible sensors.

Abstract:In this work, the HSF/PAM/PAA/PSBMA gels with the dual network were prepared. The monomers AM and AA undergo self‐polymerization and copolymerization. Meanwhile, SF is cross‐linked with them via multiple hydrogen bonds to form the first network. After the second UV initiation, SBMA polymerizes to create the second network. The hydrogels exhibit good mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, antibacterial properties, and biodegradability. The HSF/PAM/PAA/PSBMA hydrogel is expected to be used as multifunctional flexible strain sensors. The flexible wearable hydrogel strain sensors for human motion monitoring have attracted broad attention. However, developing a high‐strength hydrogel strain sensor remains challenging and achieves synergistic characteristics such as biocompatibility, antibacterial activity, and conductivity. This work proposes a two‐step UV polymerization method for the preparation of (hydrolyzed silk fibroin (HSF)/polyacrylamide (PAM)/polyacrylic acid (PAA)/poly sulfobetaine methacrylate (PSBMA) composite hydrogels. The monomers AM and AA undergo self‐polymerization and copolymerization. Meanwhile, SF is cross‐linked with them via multiple hydrogen bonds to form the first network. After the second UV initiation, SBMA polymerizes to create the second network. The HSF8%/PAM/PAA/PSBMA2% possesses superior tensile strength (1.49 ± 0.07 MPa) and compressive modulus (21.47 ± 1.07 MPa at 99% strain). The SBMA (4 wt%) endows hydrogels with antibacterial activity (98.53% ± 4.93%). The H+ ionized by PAA and the ion channels constructed by SBMA (4 wt%) provide hydrogel with ionic conductivity (0.950 S m−1). The hydrogel could be used as a flexible strain sensor to monitor human joint activity. The natural silk fibroin allows the hydrogel to retain degradability. Therefore, the SF‐based conductive hydrogel shows the potential application in flexible strain sensors.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels are essential for enabling long-term and reliable signal sensing in wearable electronics due to their tunable flexibility, stimulus responsiveness, and multimodal sensing integration. However, developing durable and dependable integrated hydrogel-based flexible devices has been challenging due to mismatched mechanical properties , limited water retention capability, and reduced flexibility. This work addresses these challenges by employing a tailored physical–chemical dual-crosslinking strategy to fabricate dynamically reversible organo-hydrogels with high performance. The resultant organo-hydrogels exhibit exceptional characteristics, including high stretchability (up to ∼495% strain), remarkable toughness (with tensile and compressive strengths of ∼1350 kPa and ∼9370 kPa, respectively), and outstanding transparency (∼90.3%). Moreover, they demonstrate excellent long-term water retention ability (>2424 h, >97%). Notably, the organo-hydrogel based sensor exhibits heightened sensitivity for monitoring physiological signals and motions. Furthermore, our integrated wireless wearable sensing system efficiently captures and transmits various human physiological signals and motion information in real-time. This research advances the development of customized devices utilizing functional organo-hydrogel materials, making contributions to fulfilling the increasing demand for high-performance wireless wearable sensing.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied for the potential application as wearable sensors due to their flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, conductivity, self-healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel with self-adhesion, self-healing, conductivity, and mechanical properties was fabricated by ion cross-linking chitosan (CS), acrylic acid (AA) polymer, and tea polyphenols (TP) in the presence of graphitized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in this work. The resultant hydrogel has a unique self-healing property (94.11% for strain self-healing and 90.60% for stress self-healing) and mechanical properties. The fracture stress was 0.075 MPa with the strain was 1184%, and the toughness reaches 0.48 MJ/m3. The synergistic effect of free ions and CNTs endows the hydrogel excellent electrical conductivity (6.67 S·m-1). Moreover, the hydrogel can adhere to various organic and inorganic materials. It exhibits repeatable self-adhesion to human skin and can be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogel also has good strain sensitivity and stable output signals in motion monitoring of human body as biosensor. Therefore, this work provides a new prospect for the design of multifunctional hydrogels for potential applications in wearable biosensors.

Abstract:A novel semi‐interpenetrating network polyacrylamide/phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid/cellulose nanofibril hydrogel (PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF) is proposed based on a "tailor‐made" PBA‐IL with multiple roles. Benefiting from the ingenious structural design, the PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF simultaneously displays the excellent comprehensive merits: (i) a fine trade‐off between electrical and mechanical performance, (ii) high strain sensitivity, favorable adhesion, self‐healing property, transparency and water retention. Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) integrate the conductive performance and soft nature of tissue‐like materials to imitate the features of human skin with mechanical and sensory traits; thus, they are considered promising substitutes for conventional rigid metallic conductors when fabricating human‐motion sensors. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, ionic conductivity, self‐healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a novel ICH platform is proposed by designing a phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid (PBA‐IL) with multiple roles that simultaneously realize the highly mechanical, electrical, and versatile properties. This elaborately designed semi‐interpenetrating network ICH is fabricated via a facile one‐step approach by introducing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) into the PBA‐IL/acrylamide cross‐linked network. Ingeniously, the dynamic boronic ester bonds and physical interactions (hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions) of the cross‐linked network endow these hydrogels with remarkable stretchability (1810 ± 38%), toughness (2.65 ± 0.03 MJ m−3), self‐healing property (92 ± 2% efficiency), adhesiveness, and transparency. Moreover, the construction of this material shows that CNFs can synergistically enhance mechanical performance and conductivity. The wide working strain range (≈1000%) and high sensitivity (GF = 8.36) make this ICH a promising candidate for constructing the next generation of gel‐based strain sensor platforms.

Development of an Ultrastretchable Double-Network Hydrogel for Flexible Strain Sensors

Abstract:The weak mechanical properties of hydrogels due to the inefficient dissipation of energy in the intrinsic structures limit their practical applications. Here, a double-network (DN) hydrogel has been developed by integrating an ionically cross-linked agar network, a covalently cross-linked acrylic acid (AAC) network, and the dynamic and reversible ionically cross-linked coordination between the AAC chains and Fe3+ ions. The proposed model reveals the mechanisms of the improved mechanical performances in the DN agar/AAC-Fe3+ hydrogel. The hydrogen-bond cross-linked double helices of agar and ionic-coordination interactions of AAC-Fe3+ can be temporarily sacrificed during large deformation to readily dissipate the energy, whereas the reversible AAC-Fe3+ interactions can be regenerated after stress relief, which greatly increases the material toughness. The developed DN hydrogel demonstrates a remarkable stretchability with a break strain up to 3174.3%, high strain sensitivity with the gauge factor being 0.83 under a strain of 1000%, and good 3D printability, making the material a desirable candidate for fabricating flexible strain sensors, electronic skin, and soft robots.
