Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) is already widely employed in various medical roles, and ongoing technological advances are encouraging more widespread use of AI in imaging. This is partly driven by the recognition of the significant frequency and clinical impact of human errors in radiology reporting, and the promise that AI can help improve the reliability as well the efficiency of imaging interpretation. AI in imaging was first envisioned in the 1960s, but initial attempts were limited by the technology of the day. It was the introduction of artificial neural networks and AI based computer aided detection (CAD) software in the 1980s that marked the advent of widespread integration of AI within radiology reporting. CAD is now routinely used in mammography, with consistent evidence of equivalent or improved lesion detection, with small increases in recall rates. Significant false positive rates remain a limitation for CAD, although these have markedly improved in the last decade. Other challenges include the difficulty clinicians encounter in trying to understand the reasoning of an AI system, which may limit their confidence in its advice, and a question mark hangs over who should be liable if CAD makes an error. The future integration of CAD with PACS promises the development of more comprehensively intelligent systems that can identify multiple, challenging diagnoses, and a move towards more individualised patient outcome predictions based upon AI analysis.

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly finding its way into routine radiological work. Objective: Presentation of the current advances and applications of AI along the entire radiological patient journey. Methods: Systematic literature review of established AI techniques and current research projects, with reference to consensus recommendations. Results: The applications of AI in radiology cover a wide range, starting with AI-supported scheduling and indications assessment, extending to AI-enhanced image acquisition and reconstruction techniques that have the potential to reduce radiation doses in computed tomography (CT) or acquisition times in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while maintaining comparable image quality. These include computer-aided detection and diagnosis, such as fracture recognition or nodule detection. Additionally, methods such as worklist prioritization and structured reporting facilitated by large language models enable a rethinking of the reporting process. The use of AI promises to increase the efficiency of all steps of the radiology workflow and an improved diagnostic accuracy. To achieve this, seamless integration into technical workflows and proven evidence of AI systems are necessary. Conclusion: Applications of AI have the potential to profoundly influence the role of radiologists in the future.

Abstract:The emergence of massively parallel yet affordable computing devices has been a game changer for research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, dramatic investment from the web giants has fostered the development of a high-quality software stack. Going forward, the combination of faster computers with dedicated software libraries and the widespread availability of data has opened the door to more flexibility in the design of AI models. Radiomics is a process used to discover new imaging biomarkers that has multiple applications in radiology and can be used in conjunction with AI. AI can be used throughout the various processes of diagnostic imaging, including data acquisition, reconstruction, analysis and reporting. Today, the concept of "AI-augmented" radiologists is preferred to the theory of the replacement of radiologists by AI in many indications. Current evidence bolsters the assumption that AI-assisted radiologists work better and faster. Interventional radiology becomes a data-rich specialty where the entire procedure is fully recorded in a standardized DICOM format and accessible via standard picture archiving and communication systems. No other interventional specialty can bolster such readiness. In this setting, interventional radiology could lead the development of AI-powered applications in the broader interventional community. This article provides an update on the current status of radiomics and AI research, analyzes upcoming challenges and also discusses the main applications in AI in interventional radiology to help radiologists better understand and criticize articles reporting AI in medical imaging.

Abstract:Abstract Since the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology, the promise has been that it will improve health care and reduce costs. Has AI been able to fulfill that promise? We describe six clinical objectives that can be supported by AI: a more efficient workflow, shortened reading time, a reduction of dose and contrast agents, earlier detection of disease, improved diagnostic accuracy and more personalized diagnostics. We provide examples of use cases including the available scientific evidence for its impact based on a hierarchical model of efficacy. We conclude that the market is still maturing and little is known about the contribution of AI to clinical practice. More real-world monitoring of AI in clinical practice is expected to aid in determining the value of AI and making informed decisions on development, procurement and reimbursement.

Abstract:Summary The influence of coadministration of phenobarbital (PB) on disposition of carbamazepine (CBZ) and carbamazepine‐10,11‐epoxide (CBZ‐E) in serum and in discrete areas of rat brain, together with its effects on urinary excretion of CBZ, CBZ‐E, and trans‐10,11‐dihydro‐10,11‐dihydroxycarbamazepine (CBZ‐DIOL) were investigated after both acute and chronic administration. Acute coadministration of PB resulted in increased serum CBZ levels, whereas serum CBZ‐E levels were initially lower and then higher. In daily urinary excretion, a reduction in both CBZ‐E/CBZ ratio and CBZ‐DIOL/CBZ ratio was observed. Chronic (30 day) coadministration of PB led to a decrease in serum CBZ levels after the first hour, whereas serum CBZ‐E levels were initially higher and then lower. In daily urinary excretion, a decrease in CBZ‐E/CBZ ratio and an increase in CBZ‐DIOL/CBZ ratio were noted. These results are consistent with an inhibitory interaction and a metabolic induction on both CBZ epoxidation and CBZ‐E metabolism in acute and chronic administration, respectively. However, effects on CBZ epoxidation were preferential. In the various brain areas, the effects observed were similar to those noted in serum. In addition, a relevant increase in brain/serum CBZ ratios was observed with chronic coadministration of PB.

Abstract:Background and purpose: Artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, particularly deep learning, have made significant strides in image recognition and classification, providing remarkable diagnostic accuracy to various diseases. This domain of AI has been the focus of many research papers as it directly relates to the roles and responsibilities of a radiologist. However, discussions on the impact of such technology on the radiography profession are often overlooked. To address this gap in the literature, this paper aims to address the application of AI in radiography and how AI's rapid emergence into healthcare is impacting not only standard radiographic protocols but the role of the radiographic technologist as well. Methods: A review of the literature on AI and radiography was performed, using databases within PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. Video presentations from YouTube were also utilized to weigh the varying opinions of world leaders at the fore of artificial intelligence. Results: AI can augment routine standard radiographic protocols. It can automatically ensure optimal patient positioning within the gantry as well as automate image processing. As AI technologies continue to emerge in diagnostic imaging, practicing radiologic technologists are urged to achieve threshold computational and technical literacy to operate AI-driven imaging technology. Conclusion: There are many applications of AI in radiography including acquisition and image processing. In the near future, it will be important to supply the demand for radiographers skilled in AI-driven technologies.

There is growing momentum behind leveraging artificial intelligence techniques to improve workflow and diagnosis and treatment and to enhance the value of quantitative imaging techniques. Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine Update

Abstract:Introduction This review evaluates the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming diagnostic imaging in healthcare. AI has the potential to enhance accuracy and efficiency of interpreting medical images like X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Methods A comprehensive literature search across databases like PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar was conducted, focusing on articles published in peer-reviewed journals in English language since 2019. Inclusion criteria targeted studies on AI's application in diagnostic imaging, while exclusion criteria filtered out irrelevant or empirically unsupported studies. Results and discussion Through 30 included studies, the review identifies four AI domains and eight functions in diagnostic imaging: 1) In the area of Image Analysis and Interpretation, AI capabilities enhanced image analysis, spotting minor discrepancies and anomalies, and by reducing human error, maintaining accuracy and mitigating the impact of fatigue or oversight, 2) The Operational Efficiency is enhanced by AI through efficiency and speed, which accelerates the diagnostic process, and cost-effectiveness, reducing healthcare costs by improving efficiency and accuracy, 3) Predictive and Personalised Healthcare benefit from AI through predictive analytics, leveraging historical data for early diagnosis, and personalised medicine, which employs patient-specific data for tailored diagnostic approaches, 4) Lastly, in Clinical Decision Support, AI assists in complex procedures by providing precise imaging support and integrates with other technologies like electronic health records for enriched health insights, showcasing ai's transformative potential in diagnostic imaging. The review also discusses challenges in AI integration, such as ethical concerns, data privacy, and the need for technology investments and training. Conclusion AI is revolutionising diagnostic imaging by improving accuracy, efficiency, and personalised healthcare delivery. Recommendations include continued investment in AI, establishment of ethical guidelines, training for healthcare professionals, and ensuring patient-centred AI development. The review calls for collaborative efforts to integrate AI in clinical practice effectively and address healthcare disparities.

This review article presents cases involving the use of AI models to diagnose intracranial hemorrhage, spinal fractures, and rib fractures, while discussing how certain factors like, type, location, size, presence of artifacts, calcification, and post-surgical changes, affect AI model performance and accuracy. Abstract:Without doubt, artificial intelligence (AI) is the most discussed topic today in medical imaging research, both in diagnostic and therapeutic. For diagnostic imaging alone, the number of publications on AI has increased from about 100–150 per year in 2007–2008 to 1000–1100 per year in 2017–2018. Researchers have applied AI to automatically recognizing complex patterns in imaging data and providing quantitative assessments of radiographic characteristics. In radiation oncology, AI has been applied on different image modalities that are used at different stages of the treatment. i.e. tumor delineation and treatment assessment. Radiomics, the extraction of a large number of image features from radiation images with a high-throughput approach, is one of the most popular research topics today in medical imaging research. AI is the essential boosting power of processing massive number of medical images and therefore uncovers disease characteristics that fail to be appreciated by the naked eyes. The objectives of this paper are to review the history of AI in medical imaging research, the current role, the challenges need to be resolved before AI can be adopted widely in the clinic, and the potential future.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a cutting-edge technology that analyzes complex data using computer algorithms. Diagnostic imaging is one of the most potential clinical uses of AI, and increasing effort is being put toward optimizing its functionality to make a wide range of clinical problems easier to identify and quantify. Research employing computeraided diagnostics has demonstrated exceptional precision, sensitivity, and specificity in identifying minute radiographic irregularities, which has promise for enhancing public health. However, lesion identification is often used to define result assessment in AI imaging research, neglecting the nature and biological aggressiveness of a lesion. This might lead to a distorted portrayal of AI's performance. Some AI imaging research evaluate clinically significant results, whereas others compute sensitivity and specificity to quantify diagnostic accuracy. Though AI frequently picks up on little changes to images, more significant outcome factors include newly discovered advanced disease, illnesses that need to be treated, or circumstances that might have an impact on long-term survival. AI-based research should concentrate on clinically significant events since they have a significant impact on quality of life, such as symptoms, the requirement for disease-modifying medication, and death. Numerous research have demonstrated that AI outperforms normal reading in terms of specificity and recall rates; nevertheless, the kind and biological aggressiveness of a lesion are often overlooked in the estimation of accuracy and sensitivity.

Abstract:Abstract The future of radiology is disproportionately linked to the applications of artificial intelligence (AI). Recent exponential advancements in AI are already beginning to augment the clinical practice of radiology. Driven by a paucity of review articles in the area, this article aims to discuss applications of AI in nononcologic IR across procedural planning, execution, and follow-up along with a discussion on the future directions of the field. Applications in vascular imaging, radiomics, touchless software interactions, robotics, natural language processing, postprocedural outcome prediction, device navigation, and image acquisition are included. Familiarity with AI study analysis will help open the current “black box” of AI research and help bridge the gap between the research laboratory and clinical practice.

Abstract:In this review article, the current and future impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on diagnostic imaging is discussed, with a focus on cardio-thoracic applications. The processing of imaging data is described at 4 levels of increasing complexity and wider implications. At the examination level, AI aims at improving, simplifying, and standardizing image acquisition and processing. Systems for AI-driven automatic patient iso-centering before a computed tomography (CT) scan, patient-specific adaptation of image acquisition parameters, and creation of optimized and standardized visualizations, for example, automatic rib-unfolding, are discussed. At the reading and reporting levels, AI focuses on automatic detection and characterization of features and on automatic measurements in the images. A recently introduced AI system for chest CT imaging is presented that reports specific findings such as nodules, low-attenuation parenchyma, and coronary calcifications, including automatic measurements of, for example, aortic diameters. At the prediction and prescription levels, AI focuses on risk prediction and stratification, as opposed to merely detecting, measuring, and quantifying images. An AI-based approach for individualizing radiation dose in lung stereotactic body radiotherapy is discussed. The digital twin is presented as a concept of individualized computational modeling of human physiology, with AI-based CT-fractional flow reserve modeling as a first example. Finally, at the cohort and population analysis levels, the focus of AI shifts from clinical decision-making to operational decisions.

Abstract:Purpose: Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) can be utilized in radiology to help diagnosis and for predicting management and outcomes based on certain image findings. DL utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNN) and may be used to classify imaging features. The objective of this literature review is to summarize recent publications highlighting the key ways in which ML and DL may be applied in radiology, along with solutions to the problems that this implementation may face.Material and methods: Twenty-one publications were selected from the primary literature through a PubMed search. The articles included in our review studied a range of applications of artificial intelligence in radiology.Results: The implementation of artificial intelligence in diagnostic and interventional radiology may improve image analysis, aid in diagnosis, as well as suggest appropriate interventions, clinical predictive modelling, and trainee education. Potential challenges include ethical concerns and the need for appropriate datasets with accurate labels and large sample sizes to train from. Additionally, the training data should be representative of the population to which the future ML platform will be applicable. Finally, machines do not disclose a statistical rationale when expounding on the task purpose, making them difficult to apply in medical imaging.Conclusions: As radiologists report increased workload, utilization of artificial intelligence may provide improved outcomes in medical imaging by assisting, rather than guiding or replacing, radiologists. Further research should be done on the risks of AI implementation and how to most accurately validate the results.

Abstract:To the Editor.— Hepatic friction rubs have been described in patients with primary and secondary tumors of the liver, liver abscess, syphilitic hepatitis, gonococcal perihepatitis, and after biopsy. We have recently observed a loud hepatic friction rub in a 39-year-old woman with Behcet syndrome and erythroleukemia. This patient had massive hepatomegaly (25-cm span), with the liver edge felt at the level of the iliac crest. The liver was diffusely tender to palpation, and she had right upper quadrant pain associated with respiratory movements and general body movements. The spleen tip was felt at the umbilicus, but no rub was heard over the left abdomen. A friction rub was heard on the third day of her admission, well localized over the lateral aspect of the right lobe of the liver. This persisted until her death one week later. Abstract:Abstract Objective There has been a large amount of research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) as applied to clinical radiology. However, these studies vary in design and quality and systematic reviews of the entire field are lacking.This systematic review aimed to identify all papers that used deep learning in radiology to survey the literature and to evaluate their methods. We aimed to identify the key questions being addressed in the literature and to identify the most effective methods employed. Methods We followed the PRISMA guidelines and performed a systematic review of studies of AI in radiology published from 2015 to 2019. Our published protocol was prospectively registered. Results Our search yielded 11,083 results. Seven hundred sixty-seven full texts were reviewed, and 535 articles were included. Ninety-eight percent were retrospective cohort studies. The median number of patients included was 460. Most studies involved MRI (37%). Neuroradiology was the most common subspecialty. Eighty-eight percent used supervised learning. The majority of studies undertook a segmentation task (39%). Performance comparison was with a state-of-the-art model in 37%. The most used established architecture was UNet (14%). The median performance for the most utilised evaluation metrics was Dice of 0.89 (range .49–.99), AUC of 0.903 (range 1.00–0.61) and Accuracy of 89.4 (range 70.2–100). Of the 77 studies that externally validated their results and allowed for direct comparison, performance on average decreased by 6% at external validation (range increase of 4% to decrease 44%). Conclusion This systematic review has surveyed the major advances in AI as applied to clinical radiology. Key Points • While there are many papers reporting expert-level results by using deep learning in radiology, most apply only a narrow range of techniques to a narrow selection of use cases. • The literature is dominated by retrospective cohort studies with limited external validation with high potential for bias. • The recent advent of AI extensions to systematic reporting guidelines and prospective trial registration along with a focus on external validation and explanations show potential for translation of the hype surrounding AI from code to clinic.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Artificial intelligence (AI) is the most revolutionizing development in the health care industry in the current decade, with diagnostic imaging having the greatest share in such development. Machine learning and deep learning (DL) are subclasses of AI that show breakthrough performance in image analysis. They have become the state of the art in the field of image classification and recognition. Machine learning deals with the extraction of the important characteristic features from images, whereas DL uses neural networks to solve such problems with better performance. In this review, we discuss the current applications of machine learning and DL in the field of diagnostic radiology.Deep learning applications can be divided into medical imaging analysis and applications beyond analysis. In the field of medical imaging analysis, deep convolutional neural networks are used for image classification, lesion detection, and segmentation. Also used are recurrent neural networks when extracting information from electronic medical records and to augment the use of convolutional neural networks in the field of image classification. Generative adversarial networks have been explicitly used in generating high-resolution computed tomography and magnetic resonance images and to map computed tomography images from the corresponding magnetic resonance imaging. Beyond image analysis, DL can be used for quality control, workflow organization, and reporting.In this article, we review the most current AI models used in medical imaging research, providing a brief explanation of the various models described in the literature within the past 5 years. Emphasis is placed on the various DL models, as they are the most state-of-art in imaging analysis.

Abstract:The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in deep learning, has significantly impacted radiology, introducing an array of AI solutions for interpretative tasks. This paper provides radiology departments with a practical guide for selecting and integrating AI solutions, focusing on interpretative tasks that require the active involvement of radiologists. Our approach is not to list available applications or review scientific evidence, as this information is readily available in previous studies; instead, we concentrate on the essential factors radiology departments must consider when choosing AI solutions. These factors include clinical relevance, performance and validation, implementation and integration, clinical usability, costs and return on investment, and regulations, security, and privacy. We illustrate each factor with hypothetical scenarios to provide a clearer understanding and practical relevance. Through our experience and literature review, we provide insights and a practical roadmap for radiologists to navigate the complex landscape of AI in radiology. We aim to assist in making informed decisions that enhance diagnostic precision, improve patient outcomes, and streamline workflows, thus contributing to the advancement of radiological practices and patient care.
