Abstract:In this study, biochar derived from brown algal Ascophyllum nodosum was synthesized through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) coupling with ZnCl2 chemical activation and applied as a sustainable adsorbent for antibiotic removal from water exemplified by ciprofloxacin (CIP). Various surface analysis techniques such as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential were used to clarify the surface properties of prepared biochars. The adsorption performance of biochars was investigated using batch adsorption experiments with a variety of parameters (initial pH, ionic types, temperature and water matrixes). The application of prepared biochar in CIP removal showed a good result of adsorption capacity (150-400 mg g-1) in different conditions. Overall, algal biochars, as a product recycled from biowaste, demonstrated a novel and promising adsorbent for effective and sustainable method for removal of antibiotics from water.

Abstract:The intensification of pharmaceutical use globally has led to an increase in the number of water bodies contaminated by drugs, and an effective strategy must be developed to address this issue. In this work, several biochars produced from Miscanthus straw pellets (MSP550, MSP700) and wheat straw pellets (WSP550, WSP700) at 550 and 700degree celsius, respectively, were selected as adsorbents for removing various pharmaceuticals, such as pemetrexed (PEME), sulfaclozine (SCL), and terbutaline (TBL), from the aqueous phase. The biochar characterizations (physicochemical properties, textural properties, morphological structures, and zeta potentials) and adsorptive conditions (contact times, temperatures, and pH effect) were investigated. The infrared and Raman spectra of biochars before and after pharmaceutical adsorption, as well as quantum chemical computations, were carried out to explore the adsorption mechanisms. The results showed that the general adsorption abilities of biochars for pharmaceuticals were in the order of WSP700 > MSP700 > MSP550 > WSP550. Both the higher drug concentration and higher temperature improved biochar adsorption. By decreasing the pH, the adsorption amounts increased for PEME and SCL. However, TBL exhibited the best adsorption at pH 7, whereas a weakening of affinity occurred at lower or higher pH values. Electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding were the main adsorptive mechanisms between all biochars and pharmaceuticals. pi-pi interactions played a role in the adsorption process of low-temperature-prepared biochars (MSP550 and WSP550). This work can provide new insights into the control of pharmaceuticals from water with low-cost adsorbents. Abstract:Abstract Chemical products (CPs), such as carbamazepine and naproxen, present in aquatic environments pose a considerable risk to both aquatic life and human health. This study aimed to explore the potential of employing hydrothermally carbonized food waste-derived hydrochar (AC-HTC-250) as an adsorbent to eliminate these CPs from water. The research specifically examined the influence of hydrothermal carbonization temperature on hydrochar properties and the ramifications of chemical activation using phosphoric acid on the hydrochar's adsorption capacity for carbamazepine and naproxen. Additionally, the activated and non-activated hydrochars' physiochemical and surface characteristics were scrutinized in depth. The investigation demonstrated that the hydrothermal carbonization process contributed to an increase in hydrochar surface area from 1.47 to 7.52 m 2 /g, which was subsequently amplified to 32.81 m 2 /g through phosphoric acid activation. Batch adsorption experiments indicated that AC-HTC-250 hydrochar exhibited high efficiency in removing carbamazepine and naproxen, with adsorption capacities of 49.09 mg/kg and 14.34 mg/kg, respectively. The study also revealed that the adsorption data corresponded well with the Langmuir model and pseudo first-order models. The solution's pH exerted a strong influence on carbamazepine and naproxen adsorption, with the optimal pH for both compounds determined to be 4. These findings hold potential for applying hydrothermally carbonized and chemically activated food waste-derived hydrochar as an adsorbent in wastewater treatment processes.

Abstract:Sewage sludge (SS)-derived hydrochar by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) have demonstrated its potential as an adsorbent. This study investigated the effect of HTC parameters and feedstock components on the adsorption performance of hydrochar, with the aim of enhancing its adsorption performance without modification, thereby expanding applications of waste-derived adsorbent under cost constraints. Water, ash and five model compounds were used to adjust the typical components of SS, then hydrochar was prepared under various HTC parameters. The adsorption quantity of the model pollutants (tetracycline and methylene blue) on hydrochar decreased with an increase in HTC temperature, and there was a minor decrease with prolonged reaction times. Changes in the HTC parameters did not affect the adsorption mechanism of the hydrochar. Notably, humus and lignin emerged as key components affecting the adsorption performance of hydrochars. Compared with the blank control, the adsorption capacities of tetracycline and methylene blue by hydrochar after the addition of 30 wt% humic acid increased by 16.1% and 101.0%, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of methylene blue increased by 58.5% after adding 30 wt% alkali lignin. The underlying mechanism was elucidated based on hydrochar characterization. Changes in HTC parameters affected the properties of hydrochar and its adsorption performance. The effect of component adjustment on the adsorption performance of hydrochar was attributed to abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups formed by the model compounds during hydrolysis. Component adjustment facilitated the binding of groups to the hydrochar, thereby offering more adsorption sites. This study provides a valuable reference for utilizing SS in the preparation of efficient and low-cost adsorbents.

Abstract:The highly stable biomass structure formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin results in incomplete conversion and carbonization under hydrothermal conditions. In this study, pretreated corn straw hydrochar (PCS-HC) was prepared using a low-temperature alkali/urea combination pretreatment method. The Mass loss rate of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from pretreated biomass, as well as the effects of the pretreatment method on the physicochemical properties of PCS-HC and the adsorption performance of PCS-HC for alkaline dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue), were investigated. The results showed that the low-temperature NaOH/urea pretreatment effectively disrupted the stable structure formed by cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. NaOH played a dominant role in solubilizing cellulose and the combination of low temperature and urea enhanced the ability of NaOH to remove cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Compared to the untreated hydrochar, PCS-HC exhibited a rougher surface, a more abundant pore structure, and a larger specific surface area. The unpretreated hydrochar exhibited an adsorption capacity of 64.8% for rhodamine B and 66.32% for methylene blue. However, the removal of rhodamine B and methylene blue by PCS-BC increased to 89.12% and 90.71%, respectively, under the optimal pretreatment conditions. The PCS-HC exhibited a favorable adsorption capacity within the pH range of 6–9. However, the presence of co-existing anions such as Cl − , SO 4 2− , CO 3 2− , and NO 3 − hindered the adsorption capacity of PCS-HC. Among these anions, CO 3 2− exhibited the highest level of inhibition. Chemisorption, including complexation, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding, were the primary mechanism for dye adsorption by PCS-HC. This study provides an efficient method for utilizing agricultural waste and treating dye wastewater.

Abstract:The application of sludge-based biochar and its derivatives to remove antibiotics from aquatic media has long been recognized as an environmentally-friendly approach since it delivers the scenario of waste treatment by wastes. Despite the existence of various proposed adsorption mechanisms, a comprehensive analysis that combines macroscopic and microscopic perspectives remains insufficient. Herein, surface modification (Fe3O4) and spherization (chitosan) were employed to improve the adsorption capacity of sludge-based biochar toward tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The as-prepared gel pellets (FeB-11) exhibited high adsorption capacity toward TC in aqueous with maximum uptake of 206.98 mg⋅g−1 under 298K. The combination of characterization-based and approximate site energy distribution (ASED) methods concluded that surface complexation played the primary role in enhancing the adsorption capacity of FeB-11 for TC, while space filling, hydrogen bonding, π-π interaction, electrostatic interaction and ion exchange also contributed to the adsorption process. The introduction of chitosan and Fe3O4 weakened physisorption but strengthened chemisorption, and Fe3O4 was proposed as the primary promoter for TC adsorption due to the better affinity between TC molecules and FeB-11 which Fe3O4 brought. Concentrated and high distribution frequency of adsorption sites with high adsorptive energy were the primary surface property responsible for the remarkable TC adsorption capacity exhibited by FeB-11 in the macroscopic perspective. These findings underscored the importance of combining macroscopic and microscopic perspectives to understand the prioritization among various adsorption mechanisms, other than solely proposing various mechanisms, which was useful to help design efficient adsorbents.

Abstract:The traditional anaerobic sewage treatment facilities are unsuitable for the widely uncontrolled spread of antibiotic residues in hospital or on livestock farm, which have raised the risk levels of high concentrations of antibiotic residues leakages and seriously threatened the aquatic ecology safeties. Thus, to develop an effective adsorbent with safe, low cost, and high firmly adsorptive capacity are imminent required. In this investigated, a self-templating hydrothermal alkali fore-modified & ultrasonic treatment was developed to achieve the highly adsorptive capacity and low desorption rate of biochar. As expected, the prepared biochar adsorbents present plenty of surface functional groups and micro pores. The BET value is raised up 1452 cm2·g-1 for biochar treated by the associated alkali fore-modified and ultrasonic treatment (UFB), whereas it is only 415.8 cm2·g-1 for the biochar treated by traditional carbonization (AC) and 1205 cm2·g-1 for the biochar by further hydrothermal alkali fore-modification (FB). Congruously, UFB exhibits the removal abilities of 397.70 mg·g-1 of levofloxacin (LEV) and 320.99 mg·g-1 of chlorotetracycline (CTC), 3.5~6.3 times absorbability towards familiar antibiotics than traditional biochar. Moreover, the corresponding the lowest desorption of 1.30 mg·g-1 (LEV) and 0.43 mg·g-1 (CTC) mg·g-1 by UFB have been confirmed. Meanwhile, Furthermore, both the adsorption and desorption mechanisms have been addressed by kinetic studies, pore width distributions, XPS and FTIR surveys. It is proposed the fore-modified treatment is more helpful for carbon functionalization while the ultrasonic treatment dedicates to the largely microporous structures. Consequently, the adsorption's capacity and stability of UFB adsorbents is large promoted due to its more micro- and meso-porous structure through a jointly hydrothermal alkali fore-modified and ultrasonic treatment. The present investigation will provide a novel alternative preparation strategy of the highly efficient adsorbent for emergency medical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Bio-chars with high adsorption capacity derived from rice-husks and corncobs were prepared at different retention times (RTs) in a pyrolysis reactor. At a fixed pyrolysis temperature, the pyrolysis RT is a key factor influencing the surface areas and functional group contents of the bin-chars, and further influencing their adsorption capacities. The results indicate that the bio-char prepared at RT of 1.6 s exhibits a higher phenol adsorption capacity (589 mg g(-1)) than other bio-chars and many activated carbons reported in the literature. An adsorption mechanism based on acid-base interaction and hydrogen binding between phenol and the functional groups was proposed to elucidate the adsorption process. Co-adsorption and selective-adsorption of heavy metals and dyes from aqueous solution by bio-based humus/chitosan hydrogels

Abstract:An eco-friendly adsorbent was prepared by reverse suspension crosslinking method to remove multiple pollutants from aqueous solution. Both raw materials, derived from humus (HS) and chitosan (CS), are biodegradable and low-cost natural biopolymers. After combining HS with CS, the adsorption capacity was significantly improved due to compensation effects between the two components. HS/CS exhibited the features of amphoteric adsorption through pH adjustment, enabling it to adsorb not only anionic pollutants (Methyl Orange (MO) and Cr(VI)), but also cationic ones (Methylene Blue (MB) and Pb(II)). The adsorption capacities were approximately 242 mg/g, 69 mg/g, 188 mg/g and 57 mg/g for MO, Cr(VI), MB and Pb(II), respectively. HS/CS showed a slight preference for MO in MO/Cr(VI) co-adsorption system, whereas strong selectivity for MB over Pb(II) in MB/Pb(II) system under acidic condition (pH<3.0). This selective behavior would allow for potential applications in separating MB/Pb(II) effluents and selectively recycling Pb(II) in acidic environment. The isothermal and kinetic adsorption behaviors followed Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order model, respectively. The density functional theory (DFT) confirmed that the interaction between metal ions and adsorbents was primarily attributed to chelation and electrostatic adsorption, owing to nitric and oxygenic functional groups. Whereas, the adsorption mechanisms for dyes were involved in electrostatic attraction, H-bond and π-π bond, due to available hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen atoms and aromatic groups on the surface of adsorbent and adsorbates. The adsorbent could be efficiently regenerated and retained over 90% of its adsorption capacity after five cycles, which has a potential for practical applications in water treatment.
Hydrothermal and pyrolytic conversion of sunflower seed husk into novel porous biochar for efficient adsorption of tetracycline

Abstract:In this study, sunflower seed husk biochar prepared by ZnCl 2 -activated and hydrothermal carbonization (HZSF) was studied for its effectiveness in removing tetracycline (TC) from an aqueous solution. The physical and chemical properties of materials were characterized by different methods of surface analysis. The specific surface area of HZSF is significantly enhanced over 1200 times compared with non-modified biochar (HZSF: 1578.3 m 2 ·g −1 , SF-700: 1.3 m 2 ·g −1 ), which has an enhancement effect on the TC adsorption capacity. The HZSF showed that the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models could properly characterize the adsorption processes. In the Langmuir isotherm model, HZSF exhibited effective adsorption performance with q max of 673.0 mg·g -1 at 298 K for 24 h. The possible mechanisms for the adsorption process were the monolayer, chemical adsorption, and the participation of strong intermolecular forces. In general, HZSF has the potential to be a useful adsorbent for the elimination of antibiotics from water-based solutions.

Abstract:Biomass-derived activated carbons (biochars) have attracted great attention due to their excellent physicochemical properties such as high specific area, large pore volume, well-defined microporous structure and tunable surface chemistry. Although pharmaceuticals are an emerging class of micropollutants in wastewater through the sewerage disposal by pharmaceutical factories, hospitals and households, only a few recent studies have reviewed the adsorption and removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater by biochars and they lack the systematic insights into total adsorption process from biochars preparation to adsorption mechanism. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review on recent publications and to propose future research directions. The effects of lignocellulosic biomass as well as the pyrolysis, activation and modification conditions on the physicochemical properties of biochars and their adsorption capacities are discussed. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of different pharmaceuticals onto various biochars are analyzed based on commonly used models. Finally, the potential adsorption mechanisms of pharmaceuticals by biochars are summarized.

Abstract:Hydrochars were obtained by hydrothermal carbonization treatment of municipal sewage sludge. Effects of reaction temperature (180–300 °C) and reaction time (2–15 h) on structural characteristics of the hydrochars, and changes and release risk of typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the hydrochars were investigated. Reaction temperature played a more important role than reaction time on hydrochar properties and decarboxylation reaction was the primary process during the converting of sludge to hydrochars. The sludge hydrochars had higher yields, carbon recovery rates, polarity and less aromaticity than biochars. Hydrothermal process reduced PPCPs' load in sludge hydrochars effectively except caffeine and acetaminophen. The hydrochars prepared at intermediate and high temperatures (240 and 300 °C) had higher caffeine concentrations than the original sludge, which can be ascribed to the transformation of N-containing precursors. The highest CaCl2 extracted caffeine concentration occurred at intermediate temperature of 240 °C (48.1 μg/kg) due to the stronger affinity of caffeine in the high-temperature hydrochars. Caffeine was not detected in hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPCD) extract. Hydrochars prepared at low temperature (180 °C) had a higher acetaminophen concentration than the original sludge, which was attributed to the high thermal stability temperature of acetaminophen. Low- and intermediate-temperature hydrochars had higher CaCl2 extracted acetaminophen concentrations. The HPCD extracted acetaminophen was low with a range of nd to 6.72 μg/kg. In conclusion, PPCPs are less likely to constitute a limiting factor on the farm application of sludge hydrochar. This study provides theoretical support for the safe application of sludge hydrochar in the farmland.

Abstract:In order to explore the feasibility of using template/hydrothermal method to produce mesoporous biochars from real biomass directly for adsorptive removal of pharmaceuticals, six mesoporous biochar samples were produced from bamboo waste through this method and characterized, and their adsorption capabilities for berberine hydrochloride and matrine from water were evaluated. Characterization results confirmed the mesoporous structures of the biochar samples, and the biochars had BET surface areas in the range of 180 to 880 m2/g. Pore properties of the biochars mainly depended on the synthesis compositions and were related to their adsorption capabilities. The bamboo derived mesoporous biochars provided effective adsorption with the highest uptake amounts of 645 and 496 mg/g for berberine hydrochloride and matrine at 0.1 mg/mL and 298 K, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached in 90 min for berberine hydrochloride and 60 min for matrine on the selected mesoporous biochar. This study provides an effective strategy to produce biomass derived mesoporous biochars as efficient adsorbents in water treatment and pharmaceutical purification.

Abstract:As an efficient and low-cost adsorbent, biochar has been widely used in the adsorption and removal of dyes, antibiotics and phenols from wastewater. Biochar is produced with gas and bio-oil during biomass pyrolysis and has many advantages as an adsorbent compared to activated carbon. In addition to sustainable soil remediation, it can also remove organic and inorganic contaminants from water/wastewater after physical/chemical modification. The adsorption capacity of biochar is often increased by acid/base and metal impregnation. This article first reviews the main physical and chemical properties of biochar, such as pH, specific surface area and porosity, surface functional groups and stability. Subsequently, three methods for preparing biochar by pyrolysis and the effects of raw materials, pyrolysis temperature, heating rate, and residence time on the properties of biochar are summarized. Due to the performance deficiencies of biochar, this article discusses the preparation of biochar composites by magnetic modification, acid modification, alkali modification, water vapor modification, nano metal oxide/hydroxide modification and heteroatom doping. The removal mechanisms of organic wastewater pollutants are summarized and analyzed, including pore filling, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions and π-π bonding. The factors affecting the removal effect mainly include the kinetic parameters, pH value of the solution, adsorption temperature, coexisting ions, biochar particle size, initial concentration and dose and reaction time. Finally, the removal effects and adsorption mechanisms of biochar for dyes, antibiotics and phenols from typical organic wastewater are discussed.

Koh-activated biochar and chitosan composites for efficient adsorption of industrial dye pollutants

Abstract:The treatment of dye pollutants remains a challenge in the current management of the water environment. In this study, an innovative biochar material co-modified with KOH and chitosan was synthesized. The morphology and physicochemical properties of the modified biochar material were assessed by SEM, FTIR, XPS, XRD, and thermogravimetric analyses. The results revealed a significant enhancement in chitosan loading due to the pretreatment of biochar with KOH. The co-modified biochar with KOH and chitosan (CHKBC) exhibited an enriched composition of functional groups such as − COOH, −NH 2 , and − OH, leading to a substantial increase in the maximum adsorption of MB by the biochar from 8.83 mg g −1 to 62.04 mg g −1 , a 7.03-fold increase. The excellent adsorption performance of CHKBC for MB was maintained at different solution temperature (288–––318 K) and pH (5–––11) conditions. The main adsorption mechanisms of MB removal by CHKBC involved ion exchange, pore filling, electrostatic attraction, π - π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. Overall, CHKBC has higher chitosan loading, more uniform chitosan distribution, and better adsorption efficiency of MB. It is a promising adsorption material with low cost and a simple production process.

Synthesis of Biochar from Iron-Free and Iron-Containing Microalgal Biomass for the Removal of Pharmaceuticals from Water.

Abstract:The contamination of natural water bodies with pharmaceutical compounds has raised significant concerns about ecological and public health safety. In this study, biochars were synthesized from iron-free microalgal biomass (harvested by centrifugation) and iron-containing microalgal biomass (harvested by coagulation) and tested for the adsorption of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and diclofenac (DIC) from water in batch and fixed-bed column continuous studies. The physicochemical properties of synthesized biochars were analyzed using Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area analyzer, elemental analyzer, Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), and Scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of iron-containing biochar (FBC750W) and iron-free biochar (MBC750W) based on the Langmuir model were obtained as 75.97 mg/g and 39.08 mg/g for CIP, and 40.99 mg/g and 6.77 mg/g for DIC, respectively. Comparatively, maximum monolayer adsorption capacities of commercial activated carbon (C-AC) were found to be 50.97 mg/g and 46.39 mg/g for CIP and DIC, respectively. In fixed-bed column continuous adsorption studies, the effects of flow rate (1 and 2 mL/min) and the adsorbent amount (50 and 100 mg) on adsorption performance were evaluated. Column kinetic models, such as Bohart-Adams model and Fractal-like Bohart-Adams model were examined. The adsorption mechanisms were proposed as pore filling, π-π interaction, and electrostatic interaction. Overall, the results of this study revealed that microalgal biomass, harvested with FeCl3, can be used for the direct synthesis of iron-containing biochar for the removal of pharmaceuticals from water.

Abstract:Moving towards a circular economy offers a viable path to mitigating stress on natural resources. This study revealed that hydrothermal carbonization can effectively valorize Cu-loaded spent biomass into a Cu-enriched hydrochar to be used as sorbent of organic pollutants. The structural properties and surface analysis of the obtained hydrochars were assessed using various techniques, and its adsorption capacity was evaluated through the removal of 2-nitrophenol from artificially contaminated aqueous solutions in batch adsorption tests. Central Composite Design and the Response Surface Methodology were utilized to optimize the hydrothermal carbonization process. The study was aimed at examining the individual and combined effects of hydrothermal temperature and residence time on hydrochars yield and their specific surface area. The N 2 adsorption/desorption showed that Cu-SG biomass-derived hydrochar exhibited a higher specific surface area compared with raw biomass-derived hydrochar. The results obtained indicate that the hydrochar produced at 210 °C with a 5 h reaction time (HC-210-5) is a highly efficient adsorbent for 2-nitrophenol, exhibiting a capacity ranging from 1.3 mg/g to 7.7 mg/g at low concentrations (ranging from 5 to 50 ppm). The kinetic study reveals that the adsorption process onto HC-210-5 follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, while the equilibrium isotherms were determined using the Freundlich isotherm model. These findings endorse the viability of a one-step synthesis of Cu-doped hydrochars from Cu-contaminated biomass as a promising and efficient adsorbent for the removal of micropollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:Selenium (Se) and chromium (Cr) in water might be harmful because of their high toxicity in the aquatic environment. Efficient removal of their hexavalent forms (Se(VI) and Cr(VI)) from extreme acidic wastewater is still challenging. Therefore, several new hydrochars suited for efficient removal of trace Se(VI) and Cr(VI) from acidic wastewater were fabricated from biomass through a hydrothermal method. Most functional groups were retained in the hydrochar, which gave it an excellent adsorption capacity (43.2 mg·g −1 and 132 mg·g −1 for Se(VI) and Cr(VI), respectively). After one batch treatment at exceptionally low pH and a hydrochar dose of 0.2 g·L −1 , Se(VI) and Cr(VI) could be removed from 1 mg·L −1 to 6 μg·L −1 and 15 μg·L −1 , respectively. The mechanism of adsorption at various pH was elucidated by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Thermogravimetry, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The adsorption mechanism for Se(VI) in acidic solution involved the binding of SeO 4 2− with protonated amino groups (−NH 3 + ) of Mix hydrochar. In the pH range of 6.5 to 7, Cr(VI) combined with −NH 3 + functional groups primarily in the form of CrO 4 2− . When the pH fell below 6.5, Cr(VI) bound with both −NH 3 + and carbonyl groups (−C=O) in the form of HCrO 4 − . Fast kinetics were observed during the removal process of Se(VI) and Cr(VI). The hydrochar adsorbent showed good stability in acidic environments and during many adsorption cycles. These findings provide theoretical basis for design of adsorption materials for acidic wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The extensive use of pharmaceuticals has raised growing concerns regarding their presence in surface waters. High concentrations of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and lincomycin (LIN), as commonly prescribed antibiotics, persist in various wastewaters and surface waters, posing risks to public health and the environment. Biochar derived from accessible biowaste, like activated sludge biomass, offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to mitigate antibiotic release into water systems. This study investigates the effectiveness of H3PO4-modified activated sludge-based biochar (PBC) synthesized through microwave (MW) heating for the adsorption of SMX and LIN antibiotics. The synthesis parameters of PBC were optimized using a central composite design considering MW power, time, and H3PO4 concentration. Characterization results validate the efficacy of the synthesis process creating a specific surface area of 365 m2/g, and well-developed porosity with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups. Batch and dynamic adsorption experiments were piloted to assess the adsorption performance of PBC in single and binary antibiotic systems. Results show that PBC exhibits a higher affinity for SMX rather than LIN, with maximum adsorption capacities of 45.6 mg/g and 26.6 mg/g, respectively. Based on kinetic studies chemisorption is suggested as the primary mechanism for SMX and LIN removal. Equilibrium studies show a strong agreement with the Redlich-Peterson isotherm, suggesting a composite adsorption mechanism with a greater probability of multilayer adsorption for both antibiotics. Hydrogen bonding and π-π electron sharing are suggested as the prevailing adsorption mechanisms of SMX and LIN on the modified biochar. Furthermore, a dynamic adsorption system was replicated using a fixed bed column setup, demonstrating effective removal of SMX and LIN from pure water and real wastewater samples using PBC-loaded hydrogel beads (PBC-B). These findings serve as crucial support for upcoming studies concerning the realistic application of sludge-based biochar in the removal of antibiotics from water systems.

Abstract:To cope with the widespread polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) pollution in the global aquatic environment, this study prepared an acid-modified biochar adsorbent derived from sludge with satisfactory performance. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of the adsorbent for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were determined to be 72.17 and 45.88 mg·g–1, respectively. The theoretical calculation of the adsorption of biochar surface functional groups with PFOS and PFOA was first performed in this study, and the mechanism of the adsorption process was inferred with a combination of experimental results and redundancy analysis. The adsorption mechanism is composed mainly of the following three aspects: (I) electrostatic interaction between the positively charged biochar and the deprotonated PFAS; (II) hydrogen bonding between anionic species of PFAS and functional groups; and (III) hydrophobic interaction between long-chain hydrophobic PFAS and biochar. Electrostatic interaction plays a major role in the three main adsorption mechanisms under acidic media. Meanwhile, different functional groups have different adsorption energies for PFAS, and CO has the highest adsorption energy. The findings in this work could provide great insights into the adsorption of PFAS on modified biochar as an environmentally friendly adsorbent to promote resource reuse, improve water quality, and ensure human health.
