Abstract:In this study, a calibration model based on Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) technique and chemometrics method was developed for rapid and non-destructive detecting the polysaccharide contents of lentinula edodes samples collected from different regions. The polysaccharide contents of these samples were firstly determined by standard phenol-sulphruic acid method. Then, NIR spectra of these samples were collected by using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Based on these experimental data, a random forest method was further used to distinguish the regions of these samples, with a classification accuracy of 96.6%. After that, a rapid, accurate, and quantitative model was established for predicting the polysaccharide contents of these samples. In the model establishing process, some signal pre-treatment methods were optimized, and the validation results with highest determination coefficient (R2) and low root mean square errors of prediction (RMSEP) were, 0.925 and 0.720, respectively. These results showed that combined NIR technique with chemometrics was an effective and green method for lentinula edodes quality control.
Quantitative predictions of protein and total flavonoids content in Tartary and common buckwheat using near-infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Abstract:A rapid method was developed for determining the total flavonoid and protein content in Tartary buckwheat by employing near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and various machine learning algorithms, including partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector regression (SVR), and backpropagation neural network (BPNN). The RAW-SPA-CV-SVR model exhibited superior predictive accuracy for both Tartary and common buckwheat, with a high coefficient of determination (R2p = 0.9811) and a root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP = 0.1071) for flavonoids, outperforming both PLSR and BPNN models. Additionally, the MMN-SPA-PSO-SVR model demonstrated exceptional performance in predicting protein content (R2p = 0.9247, RMSEP = 0.3906), enhancing the effectiveness of the MMN preprocessing technique for preserving the original data distribution. These findings indicate that the proposed methodology could efficiently assess buckwheat adulteration analysis. It can also provide new insights for the development of a promising method for quantifying food adulteration and controlling food quality.
Variation Analysis of Starch Properties in Tartary Buckwheat and Construction of Near-Infrared Models for Rapid Non-Destructive Detection

Abstract:Due to the requirements for quality testing and breeding Tartary buckwheat (Fagopyrum tartaricum Gaerth), it is necessary to find a method for the rapid detection of starch content in Tartary buckwheat. To obtain samples with a continuously distributed chemical value, stable Tartary buckwheat recombinant inbred lines were used. After scanning the near-infrared spectra of whole grains, we employed conventional methods to analyze the contents of Tartary buckwheat. The results showed that the contents of total starch, amylose, amylopectin, and resistant starch were 532.1-741.5 mg/g, 176.8-280.2 mg/g, 318.8-497.0 mg/g, and 45.1-105.2 mg/g, respectively. The prediction model for the different starch contents in Tartary buckwheat was established using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in combination with chemometrics. The Kennard-Stone algorithm was used to split the training set and the test set. Six different methods were used to preprocess the spectra in the wavenumber range of 4000-12,000 cm-1. The Competitive Adaptive Reweighted Sampling algorithm was then used to extract the characteristic spectra, and the prediction model was built using the partial least squares method. Through a comprehensive analysis of each parameter of the model, the best model for the prediction of each nutrient was determined. The correlation coefficient of calibration (Rc) and the correlation coefficient of prediction (Rp) of the best models for total starch and amylose were greater than 0.95, and the Rc and Rp of the best models for amylopectin and resistant starch were also greater than 0.93. The results showed that the NIRS-based prediction model fulfilled the requirement for the rapid determination of Tartary buckwheat starch, thus providing an effective technical approach for the rapid and non-destructive testing of starch content in the food science and agricultural industry.
Identification and quantitative detection of illegal additives in wheat flour based on near-infrared spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Abstract:As a common food raw material in daily life, the quality and safety of wheat flour are directly related to people's health. In this study, a model was developed for the rapid identification and detection of three illegal additives in flour, namely azodicarbonamide (ADA), talcum powder, and gypsum powder. This model utilized a combination of near-infrared spectroscopy with chemometric methods. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network was used to reduce data dimensionality, while a support vector machine was applied for non-linear classification to identify illegal additives in flour. The model achieved a calibration set F1 score of 99.38% and accuracy of 99.63%, with a validation set F1 score of 98.81% and accuracy of 98.89%. Two cascaded wavelength selection methods were introduced: The first method involved backward interval partial least squares (BiPLS) combined with an improved binary particle swarm optimization algorithm (IBPSO). The second method utilized the CARS-IBPSO algorithm, which integrated competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) with IBPSO. The two cascade wavelength selection methods were used to select feature wavelengths associated with additives and construct partial least squares quantitative detection models. The models constructed using CARS-IBPSO selected feature wavelengths for detecting ADA, talcum powder, and gypsum powder exhibited the highest overall performance. The model achieved validation set determination coefficients of 0.9786, 0.9102, and 0.9226, with corresponding to root mean square errors of 0.0024%, 1.3693%, and 1.6506% and residual predictive deviations of 6.8368, 3.5852, and 3.9253, respectively. Near-infrared spectroscopy in combination with convolutional neural network dimensionality reduction and support vector machine classification enabled rapid identification of various illegal additives. The combination of CARS-IBPSO feature wavelength selection and partial least squares regression models facilitated rapid quantitative detection of these additives. This study introduces a new approach for rapidly and accurately identifying and detecting illegal additives in flour.
Quantifying several adulterants of notoginseng powder by near-infrared spectroscopy and multivariate calibration

Abstract:The authentication of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is critically important for public-health and economic terms. Notoginseng, a classical TCM of high economic and medical value, could be easily adulterated with Sophora flavescens powder (SFP), corn flour (CF) or other analogues of low-grade (ALG) because of their similar tastes, appearances and much lower cost. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of applying of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and multivariate calibration for identifying and quantifying several common adulterants in notoginseng powder. Two datasets were prepared for experiment. The competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) was used to select informative variables. Two different schemes were used for sample set partition. Model population analysis (MPA) was made. The results showed that, the constructed partial least squares (PLS) model using a reduced set of variables from CARS can provide superior performance to the full-spectrum PLS model. Also, the sample set partition is very of great importance. It seems that the combination of NIR spectroscopy, CARS and PLS is feasible to quantify common adulterants in notoginseng powder.

Abstract:This paper reports the feasibility of determining the adulterated starch levels in Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide using near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate methods. Multivariate calibration modeling procedures such as partial least squares (PLS), interval partial least squares, backward interval partial least squares, and forward interval partial least squares were applied to select the effective spectral regions that provided the lowest prediction error. According to the sum of squared differences and the root mean square error of prediction by the external validation, the optimal combinations of 8 spectral intervals were selected by forward interval partial least squares model. The optimal model was achieved with determination coefficient of 0.9962 and root mean square error of cross validation of 0.0252 in calibration set, and determination coefficient of 0.9957 and root mean square error of prediction of 0.0258 in validation set. The results indicated that NIR spectroscopy with forward interval partial least squares algorithm could be applied to determine the adulterated levels of starches in Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharide.

Abstract:As a rapid and accurate technique, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been widely used in process monitoring to improve efficiency and ensure quality consistency. In the present work, the application of NIR spectroscopy for on-line quantitative monitoring of the concentration process of Wangbi tablets was investigated. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models based on the full-range spectra or the key wavelengths selected by the competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) method were established. The accuracy of the CARS-PLSR method was greater than that of full-spectrum PLSR for three quality parameters (soluble solid contents, paeoniflorin and icariin). For the prediction set samples using the CARS-PLSR models the coefficients of determination (r(2)) and root mean square error [RMSEP (%)] were 0.97 and 1.29 for soluble solid contents, 0.93 and 0.014 for paeoniflorin and 0.85 and 0.009 for icariin, respectively. Overall the results indicated that NIR spectroscopy coupled with CARS-PLSR calibration is a reliable and non-destructive alternative method for on-line monitoring of the concentration process of Wangbi tablets on an industrial scale.
On-line Monitoring of Traditional Chinese Medicinal Powder Blending Process by Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To establish a rapid method based on near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(NIR) to monitor the blending process of traditional Chinese medicinal powder on-line.METHODS NIR spectra were collected during the blending processes of mixtures consisting of Red Peony Root powder and defatted Spine Date Seed powder.Multivariate calibration models based on PLS regression were developed to correlate the collected spectra with the content of Red Peony Root powder.The optimal calibration model was applied to monitor the blending process in real time with noninterference.RESULTS After spectral pretreatment using multiplicative signal correction(MSC),first derivative and Savitzky-Golay filter,Red Peony Root powder contents were quantified using PLS algorithm in the spectral ranges of 5 900-5 950 cm-1,6 700-6 750 cm-1 and 6 950-7 100 cm-1.The correlation coefficient of the calibration model was 0.999 0.The RMSEC,RMSEP and RMSECV were 1.14,1.16 and 1.26,respectively.CONCLUSION It was demonstrated that a miniature near-infrared analyzer could be used to monitor the contents of the constituents and the blending homogeneity of traditional Chinese medicinal powder in real time,and to rapidly determine the end-point of blending process.In addition,it can be used to judge whether the physical state of powder mixture conforms to the standard.Therefore,NIR spectroscopy is considered to be an appropriate PAT tool for end-point control of blending process of traditional Chinese medicinal powder.
Combining Fourier Transform Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy with Chemometric Methods to Detect Adulterations in Milk Powder.

Abstract:Adulteration is one of the major concerns among all the quality problems of milk powder. Soybean flour and rice flour are harmless adulterations in the milk powder. In this study, mid-infrared spectroscopy was used to detect the milk powder adulterated with rice flour or soybean flour and simultaneously determine the adulterations content. Partial least squares (PLS), support vector machine (SVM) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were used to establish classification and regression models using full spectra and optimal wavenumbers. ELM models using the optimal wavenumbers selected by principal component analysis (PCA) loadings obtained good results with all the sensitivity and specificity over 90%. Regression models using the full spectra and the optimal wavenumbers selected by successive projections algorithm (SPA) obtained good results, with coefficient of determination (R2) of calibration and prediction all over 0.9 and the predictive residual deviation (RPD) over 3. The classification results of ELM models and the determination results of adulterations content indicated that the mid-infrared spectroscopy was an effective technique to detect the rice flour and soybean flour adulteration in the milk powder. This study would help to apply mid-infrared spectroscopy to the detection of adulterations such as rice flour and soybean flour in real-world conditions.

Abstract:Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics was used to discriminate the geographical origin of Herba Epimedii in this work. Four different classification models, namely discriminant analysis (DA), back propagation neural network (BPNN), K-nearest neighbor (KNN), and support vector machine (SVM), were constructed, and their performances in terms of recognition accuracy were compared. The results indicated that the SVM model was superior over the other models in the geographical origin identification of Herba Epimedii. The recognition rates of the optimum SVM model were up to 100% for the calibration set and 94.44% for the prediction set, respectively. In addition, the feasibility of NIR spectroscopy with the CARS-PLSR calibration model in prediction of icariin content of Herba Epimedii was also investigated. The determination coefficient (RP2) and root-mean-square error (RMSEP) for prediction set were 0.9269 and 0.0480, respectively. It can be concluded that the NIR spectroscopy technique in combination with chemometrics has great potential in determination of geographical origin and icariin content of Herba Epimedii. This study can provide a valuable reference for rapid quality control of food products.

Abstract:In this study, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is applied for rapid and objective classification of 5 different brands of washing powder. Chemometric calibrations including partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), back propagation neural network (BP-NN) and least square support vector machine (LS-SVM) are investigated and compared to achieve an optimal result. Firstly, principal component analysis (PCA) is conducted to visualize the difference among washing powder samples of different brands and principal components (PCs) are extracted as inputs of BP-NN and LS-SVM models. The number of PCs and parameters of such models are optimized via cross validation. In experimental studies, a total of 225 spectra of washing powder samples (45 samples for each brand) were used to build models and 75 spectra of washing powder samples (15 samples for each brand) were used as the validation set to evaluate the performance of developed models. As for the comparison of the three investigated models, both BP-NN model and LS-SVM model successfully classified all samples in validation set according to their brands. However, the PLS-DA model failed to achieve 100% of classification accuracy. The results obtained in this investigation demonstrate that NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric calibrations including BP-NN and LS-SVM can be successfully utilized to classify the brands of washing powder.
Key Variables Screening of Near-Infrared Models for Simultaneous Determination of Quality Parameters in Traditional Chinese Food “Fuzhu”

Abstract:The traditional Chinese food Fuzhu is a dried soy protein-lipid film formed during the heating of soymilk. This study investigates whether a simple and accurate model can nondestructively determine the quality parameters of intact Fuzhu. The diffused reflectance spectra (1000–2499 nm) of intact Fuzhu were collected by a commercial near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. Among various preprocessing methods, the derivative by wavelet transform method optimally enhanced the characteristic signals of Fuzhu spectra. Uninformative variable elimination based on Monte Carlo (MC-UVE), random frog (RF), and competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) were proposed to select key variables for partial least squares (PLS) calculation. The strong performance of the developed models is attributed to the high ratios of prediction to deviation values (3.32–3.51 for protein, 3.62–3.89 for lipid, and 4.27–4.55 for moisture). The prediction set was used to assess the performances of the best models of protein (CARS-PLS), lipid (RF-PLS), and moisture (CARS-PLS), which resulted in greater coefficients of determination of 0.958, 0.966, and 0.976, respectively, and lower root mean square errors of prediction of 0.656%, 0.442%, and 0.123%, respectively. Combined with chemometrics methods, the NIR technique is promising for simultaneous testing of quality parameters of intact Fuzhu.
Application of Near Infrared Spectroscopy Combined with Particle Swarm Optimization Based Least Square Support Vactor Machine to Rapid Quantitative Analysis of Corni Fructus

Abstract:A novel method was developed for the rapid determination of multi-indicators in corni fructus by means of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Particle swarm optimization (PSO) based least squares support vector machine was investigated to increase the levels of quality control. The calibration models of moisture, extractum, morroniside and loganin were established using the PSO-LS-SVM algorithm. The performance of PSO-LS-SVM models was compared with partial least squares regression (PLSR) and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). The calibration and validation results of PSO-LS-SVM were superior to both PLS and BP-ANN. For PSO-LS-SVM models, the correlation coefficients (r) of calibrations were all above 0.942. The optimal prediction results were also achieved by PSO-LS-SVM models with the RMSEP (root mean square error of prediction) and RSEP (relative standard errors of prediction) less than 1.176 and 15.5% respectively. The results suggest that PSO-LS-SVM algorithm has a good model performance and high prediction accuracy. NIR has a potential value for rapid determination of multi-indicators in Corni Fructus.

Abstract:The potential of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for non-destructive determination of quality parameters including oil and protein contents in shell-intact cottonseed was investigated. Linear partial least squares (PLS) and nonlinear least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) methods were used to develop the calibration models to determinate the protein and oil contents. Moreover, as variable selection techniques, the Monte Carlo uninformative variable elimination (MC-UVE) and the successive projections algorithm (SPA) were applied to improve the predictive ability of the model. Finally, the MC-UVE-LS-SVM models show the best prediction performance. The coefficient of determination (R-2), residual predictive deviation (RPD) and root mean squares error of prediction (RMSEP) were 0.959, 4.871 and 0.977 for protein, and 0.950, 4.429 and 0.834 for oil, respectively. The results indicate that NIR technology could be very useful for the rapid quality analysis of shell-intact cottonseed avoiding the need of grinding. Furthermore, the variable selection of MC-UVE can provide more robust and accurate calibration models than SPA. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A Feasibility Study on the Non-Invasive Analysis of Bottled Compound E Jiao Oral Liquid Using Near Infrared Spectroscopy

Abstract:The aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for the quantitative analysis of Compound E Jiao oral liquid, a popular oral TCM preparation, through intact glass vials. Transmission spectra were acquired with a sample holder tailored to the instrument's sample compartment. Total flavonoids, total saponins and soluble solid contents were considered as quality indicators of this oral preparation and calibration models were built using partial least-squares regression (PLSR) algorithm. The sample set was comprised of production samples as well as laboratory samples prepared by a concentrating-diluting method so as to extend the concentration range beyond the production variation. The developed models gave root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 0.084 mg mL(-1) for total flavonoids, 0.014 mg mL(-1) for total saponins and 0.21% for soluble solid contents. To better evaluate the prediction performance, an independent set of ten production samples was introduced for the external validation. The models are compared with those built with the transflectance spectra collected in the destructive way. The results of paired t-test and F-test at a significance level of 0.05 revealed that the two sets of models exhibited comparable model performance. The overall results demonstrate that the proposed non-destructive method can be used as an advantageous alternative in the quality inspection of Compound E Jiao oral liquid production. Non-destructive identification of pure and adulterated Panax Notoginseng powder based on spectroscopy techniques

Abstract:Panax Notoginseng is a classical traditional Chinese medical herb, which is of high economic and medical value and high price. However, a lot of Panax Notoginseng powder (PNP) sold in Chinese markets are adulterated with sophora flavescens powder (SFP) or corn flour (CF), because of their similar tastes, appearances and much cheaper prices. The objective of this study is to quantify the real PNP content in the adulterated PNP by using non-destructive method of visible spectra (Vis), short-wave near infrared spectra (SNIR) and long-wave near infrared spectra (LNIR) respectively. The samples were partitioned into 2 sets, set 1 was pure PNP and PNP mixed with 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% weight of SFP, set 2 was pure PNP and PNP mixed with 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% weight of CF. The spectra data of all the samples were analyzed by Partial least square (PLS) and Least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) for calibration and prediction. Successive projections algorithm (SPA) was used to select effective wavelengths so as to reduce computing time and improve the models' performances. For SFP adulterated samples, the LS-SVM models established on full spectra data had the best results. For CF adulterated samples, the performance of LS-SVM model within SNIR-LNIR region based on 9 effective wavelengths surpassed that of LSSVM model established on full spectra data and PLS models established on full spectra data and 9 effective wavelengths. The results illustrated that content of PNP can be detected non-destructively and rapidly by using spectroscopy techniques.

Abstract:A method for the rapid identification of the genuineness of Chinese medicines based on near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy and least square support vector machines (LSSVM) was proposed. In this study, NIR spectra of the powdered Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae) were collected, and the nonlinear classifier based on LSSVM algorithm was developed to discriminate the genuineness of these herbs. The result obtained by the proposed method was compared with that from the traditional support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation-artificial neural network (BP-ANN) methods.. It was shown that the generalization performance of the classifier based on LSSVM was much better than that of BP-ANN, while thecomputation time of LSSVM is much shorter than that of the traditional SVM. The method proposed can be applied to the rapid and accurate identification of the quality of the naturalproducts.
NIR Spectrometric Approach for Geographical Origin Identification and Taste Related Compounds Content Prediction of Lushan Yunwu Tea

Abstract:Lushan Yunwu Tea is one of a unique Chinese tea series, and total polyphenols (TP), free amino acids (FAA), and polyphenols-to-amino acids ratio models (TP/FAA) represent its most important taste-related indicators. In this work, a feasibility study was proposed to simultaneously predict the authenticity identification and taste-related indicators of Lushan Yunwu tea, using near-infrared spectroscopy combined with multivariate analysis. Different waveband selections and spectral pre-processing methods were compared during the discriminant analysis (DA) and partial least squares (PLS) model-building process. The DA model achieved optimal performance in distinguishing Lushan Yunwu tea from other non-Lushan Yunwu teas, with a correct classification rate of up to 100%. The synergy interval partial least squares (siPLS) and backward interval partial least squares (biPLS) algorithms showed considerable advantages in improving the prediction performance of TP, FAA, and TP/FAA. The siPLS algorithms achieved the best prediction results for TP (RP = 0.9407, RPD = 3.00), FAA (RP = 0.9110, RPD = 2.21) and TP/FAA (RP = 0.9377, RPD = 2.90). These results indicated that NIR spectroscopy was a useful and low-cost tool by which to offer definitive quantitative and qualitative analysis for Lushan Yunwu tea.
Rapid Detection of Common Wheat Flour Addition to Durum Wheat Flour and Pasta Using Spectroscopic Methods and Chemometrics

Abstract:Attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIRS), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS) combined with chemometrics were used to determine common wheat (Triticum aestivum) flour in durum wheat (Triticum durum) flour and common wheat farina addition to durum wheat pasta. The main objective of this study was to determine the most suitable spectroscopic method(s) to predict adulteration level in flour and pasta. It was found that among the spectroscopic methods tested, ATR-FTIRS had the lowest limit of detection (LOD) values for blended flour (0.68%) and pasta samples (0.49%). The coefficients of determination (R2) values of the prediction curves for ATR-FTIRS were found as 0.900 and 0.903 for flour and pasta samples, respectively. Similarly, R2 for the prediction of NIRS was 0.867 and 0.895 for flour and pasta samples, respectively. Since, NIR spectroscopy is widely used in food industry for quality control, it might have a good potential to detect the adulteration of common wheat flour in durum wheat flour and farina in the durum wheat pasta. SFS demonstrated a weaker predictive ability for low levels of adulteration with its higher root mean square error of prediction (10.750). The study demonstrated that ATR-FTIRS had better specificity and accuracy compared to other spectroscopic methods for the detection of adulteration.

Abstract:The medicinal Arnebia Radix (AR) is one of widely-used Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs), usually adulterated with non-medicinal species that seriously compromise the quality of AR and affect patients' health. Detection of these adulterants is usually performed by using expensive and time-consuming analytical instruments. In this study, a rapid, non-destructive, and effective method was proposed to identify and determine the adulteration in the medicinal AR by near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics. 27 batches of medicinal AR samples originated from Arnebia euchroma (Royle) Johnst., 11 batches of non-medicinal AR samples including Onosma paniculatum Bur. et Franch and Arnebia benthamii (Wall. ex G. Don) John, and 72 batches of adulterated AR samples were characterized by NIR spectroscopy. The data driven-soft independent modeling by class analogy (DD-SIMCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were separately used to differentiate the authentic from adulterated AR samples. Then the PLS and support vector machine (SVM) were applied to predict the concentration of the adulteration in the adulterated AR samples, respectively. As a result, the classification accuracies of DD-SIMCA and PLS-DA models were 100% for the calibration set, and 96.7% vs. 100% for the prediction set. Moreover, the relative prediction deviation (RPD) values of PLS models reached 11.38 and 7.75 for quantifying two adulterants species, which were obviously superior to the SVM models. It can be concluded that the NIR spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics is feasible to identify the authentic from adulterated AR samples and quantify the adulteration in adulterated AR samples.
