Abstract:Background: Vibrio vulnificus infection in persons with B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) or hypogammaglobulinemia has been reported infrequently. Patient and Methods: A woman with B-CLL, hypogammaglobulinemia, and hepatic cirrhosis died of V. vulnificus bacteremia after eating cooked shrimp and crabs. We reviewed host and exposure data in 252 cases of V. vulnificus infection reported in Louisiana during the interval of 1980 through 2004. Results: V. vulnificus was isolated from blood in 122 cases (48.8%). Preexisting conditions in 138 cases included liver disease (41.3%), malignancy (13.8%), and immunosuppression (9.4%). The prevalence of preexisting conditions was significantly greater in cases with positive blood cultures than in cases with positive wound or stool cultures. Exposure data in 116 cases revealed crab consumption without raw oyster consumption or seawater exposure in 3.4%. Conclusion: The present patient had several conditions associated with increased risk of V. vulnificus infection and bacteremia, especially hepatic cirrhosis, but her route of exposure to V. vulnificus was unusual.
Revegetation of extremely acid mine soils based on aided phytostabilization: A case study from southern China

Abstract:Acidification is a major constraint for revegetation of sulphidic metal-contaminated soils, as exemplified by the limited literature reporting the successful phytostabilization of mine soils associated with pH<3 and high acidification potential. In this study, a combination of ameliorants (lime and chicken manure) and five acid-tolerant plant species has been employed in order to establish a self-sustaining vegetation cover on an extremely acid (pH<3) polymetallic pyritic mine waste heap in southern China exhibiting high acidification potential. The results from the first two-year data showed that the addition of the amendments and the establishment of a plant cover were effective in preventing soil acidification. Net acid-generating potential of the mine soil decreased steadily, whilst pH and acid neutralization capacity increased over time. All the five acid-tolerant plants colonized successfully in the acidic metal-contaminated soil and developed a good vegetation cover within six months, and subsequent vegetation development enhanced organic matter accumulation and nutrient element status in the mine soil. The two-year remediation program performed on this extremely acid metalliferous soil indicated that aided phytostabilization can be a practical and effective restoration strategy for such extremely acid mine soils.
Phasic flow mechanisms of mucus clearance.

Abstract:Excessive bronchial secretions within the airways can be transported by two-phase gas-liquid flow with airflow rates encountered during normal tidal breathing. The transport speed of secretions with this mechanism is as effective as the mucus clearance rate in normal subjects. The thickness of bronchial secretions required to effect two-phase gas-liquid flow is about 10% of the airways diameter which is not an unusual situation for patients who have bronchial hypersecretion. Periodic airflow as encountered in normal breathing is more effective than continuous flow in moving secretions in one direction or another. However, to propel the secretions toward the larynx, expiratory airflow velocity should be higher than inspiratory airflow velocity. This pattern can be achieved by imposing a controlled pattern of mechanical ventilation and is also probably the basis for the "huffing manoeuvre" taught by chest physiotherapists to clear airway secretions. Increased elasticity and decreased viscosity of secretions promote higher transport rates by two-phase gas-liquid flow. Conditions for two-phase gas-liquid flow during tidal breathing can be met at the 8th to 9th generation of the airways.
A Novel Surface Passivation Method of Pyrite within Rocks in Underwater Environments to Mitigate Acid Mine Drainage at Its Source

Abstract:Mitigating acid mine drainage (AMD) at its source, specifically within rocks containing pyrite in underwater environments, poses a significant environmental challenge worldwide. Existing passivation techniques are primarily designed for open-air conditions, involving direct contact with coating materials at a solid–liquid interface, making them ineffective beneath a water barrier. In this study, we introduce a novel passivation method inspired by the design of underwater bio-adhesives. Tannic acid (TA) combined with polyethylene glycol (PEG) was employed to form a hydrophobic film directly on the pyrite surface, overcoming water resistance and addressing the limitations of current techniques. Electrochemical experiments and chemical leaching experiments were conducted to evaluate the oxidation resistance of the passivating films. TA–PEG-coated pyrite exhibited a lower oxidation rate and a higher static contact angle of 126.2°, achieving suppression efficiencies of 71.6% for total Fe release and 68.1% for total S release. A comprehensive characterization approach, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), was employed to investigate the passivation mechanism. The results of this study may provide new insights into the preparation of simpler and greener passivating agents to suppress pyrite oxidation at its source in underwater environments.

Abstract:This study proposes a novel method by forming biogenic K-jarosite coatings on pyrite surfaces driven by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans ( A. ferrooxidans ) to reduce heavy metal release and prevent acid mine drainage (AMD) production. Different thicknesses of K-jarosite coatings (0.7 to 1.1 μm) were able to form on pyrite surfaces in the presence of A. ferrooxidans , which positively correlated with the initial addition of Fe 2+ and K + concentrations. The inhibiting effect of K-jarosite coatings on pyrite oxidation was studied by electrochemical measurements, chemical oxidation tests, and bio-oxidation tests. The experimental results showed that the best passivation performance was achieved when 20 mM Fe 2+ and 6.7 mM K + were initially introduced with a bacterial concentration of 4 × 10 8 cells·mL −1 , reducing chemical and biological oxidation by 70% and 98%, respectively (based on the concentration of total iron dissolved into in the solution by pyrite oxidation). Similarly, bio-oxidation tests of two mine waste samples also showed sound inhibition effects, which offers a preliminary demonstration of the potential applicability of this method to actual waste rock. This study presents a new perspective on passivating the oxidation of metal sulfide tailings or waste and preventing AMD.

Abstract:Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) could be a potential green solution to resolve the issue of heavy metal releasing from the sulfide tailings. However, detailed mechanism of heavy metal-biomineralization in sulfide tailings and impact of procedure parameters on in-situ applications remain unexplored. We systematically investigated the biomineralization process in the column tests for a better understanding of the mechanism and effects on the inhibition of cadmium (Cd) releasing from sulfide tailings. Results revealed that uniform and efficient mineralization in the tailings column occurred under bacterial concentration of 1 x 10(8) cfu mL(-1), bacterial retention time of 3 h, concentration of mineralization solution of 0.25 mol L-1, and flow rate of 1.5 mL min(-1). The leachable Cd concentration decreased 80.7% after 7 mineralization cycles. From a suit of characterizations, bacteria can adhere on the tailings and acted as the nucleation sites to induce the mineralization of Ca and Cd (to (Ca0.67, Cd0.33)CO3 and calcite phase); eventually, tailings particles were coated with the growth of mineralized carbonates, resulting in a reduction of exposure for tailings (especially sulfur). And thus, Cd release was inhibited. Results from this study will provide a fundamental basis for future in-situ applications of MICP to mitigate heavy metal pollutions.

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD), a source of considerable environmental pollution worldwide, has prompted the development of many strategies to alleviate its effects. Unfortunately, the methods available for remedial treatment of AMD and the damage it cause are generally costly, labor-intensive, and time-consuming. Furthermore, such treatments may result in secondary pollution. Alternatively, treating the AMD problem at its source through pyrite surface passivation has become an important topic for research because it has the potential to reduce or prevent the generation of AMD and associated pollution. This review summarizes various pyrite anti-corrosion technologies, including the formation of various passivating coatings (inorganic, organic and organosilane) and carrier-microencapsulation. Several effective long-term passivators are identified, although many of them currently have important deficiencies that limit their practical application. Combining the mechanisms of existing passivation agents or new artificial materials, while considering environmental conditions, costs, and long-term passivation performance, is a feasible direction for future research.

Abstract:Large quantities of acid mine drainage (AMD) generated through the oxidation of sulfide-bearing minerals, particularly pyrite, pose a significant global environmental challenge. The implementation of efficient and fundamental governance methods is crucial as current conventional approaches fail to address the root cause of this problem. To investigate the technique of controlling AMD at its source, a 10-day static experiment was conducted in order to examine the inhibitory effect of Sporosarcina pasteurii ( S. pasteurii ) on oxidative acid production from pyrite under varying redox potentials (Eh) and Ca 2+ concentrations. Additionally, a 180-day dynamic column experiment was carried out to assess the long-term stability of its inhibition and heavy metal fixation. The results of both short-term and long-term analysis indicate that the metabolic activity of S. pasteurii has beneficial effects on the control of AMD through sulfur oxidation, even in the presence of strong oxidants such as H 2 O 2 and FeCl 3 . 1. It stabilizes pH within the neutral to alkaline range; 2. It maintains Eh at a low potential reducing environment; 3. It promotes an increase in SO 4 2− concentration, followed by a decline and stabilization at lower concentrations; 4. It supplies carbonate for pyrite oxidation, maintaining a balance between acid production and consumption. Additionally, SEM, XRD, and XPS results demonstrated that the mineral surface appeared flat without prominent characteristic peaks of oxidation products, indicating effective inhibition of pyrite oxidation by S. pasteurii . The immobilization experiments for heavy metals showed that Cd exhibited the highest fixation effect with a rate of 94%; Mn, Cu, Zn, and Co had the second best fixation effect with ion concentrations decreasing by 82%, 83%, 87%, and 88% respectively; Ni and U(VI) decreased by rates of 75% and 69% respectively. These experimental findings suggest that S.pasteurii can effectively inhibit pyrite oxidation as well as sulfur-containing uranium waste rock oxidation while providing long-term stabilization for heavy metal immobilization.

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of designed microbial consortia on biomining of low grade base-metal sulfide tailings. The results show the amount of recycled metals were equal if the tailings were leached by mixed cultures of Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans at three different ratios or by pure culture of L. ferriphilum, which was better than the pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans. qPCR (quantitative polymerase chain reaction) demonstrated only L. ferriphilum functioned in the mixtures at initial stage. The results of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) via three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix combined with parallel factor analysis (3DEEM-PARAFAC) collected from mixed or pure cultures indicated there were no interactions between two strains. Secondary minerals were formed, but did not influence the leaching process. A new strategy for tailings biomining was proposed: only ferrous oxidizers should be added during the initial and middle biomining stage, while sulfur oxidizers should be added at the end.

Abstract:This study investigated two bioleaching strategies for removing heavy metals from three mine tailings fractions generated by flotation processes. On the one hand, bioleaching with microbial consortia of acidophilic mesophiles and moderate thermophiles efficiently extracted Co, Cu, Zn, and As, while the leaching of Pb was facilitated through the use of organic acids produced by a heterotrophic bacterium and a fungus. Approximately 100% Co, 68% Zn, 63% As, and 31% Cu were bioleached with acidophilic mesophiles from the barite tailings (BT) sample after 14 days, whereas for the barite concentrate (BC) sample the results showed about 100% Co, 70% Zn and As, and 45% Cu removal at the same period. The sulfide concentrate (SC) sample underwent bioleaching with both consortia, acidophilic mesophiles and moderate thermophiles over 28 days. Approximately, 67% of Co, 28% of Zn, 56% of As, 28% of Cu, and 6% of Mn were extracted from the sample using mesophiles, whereas the leaching efficiency with the moderate thermophiles was about 72% of Co, 50% of Zn, 28% of As, 36% of Cu, and 5% of Mn in 20 L bioreactors. On the other hand, bioleaching of Pb was explored using the bacterium Gluconobacter oxydans and the fungus Penicillium simplicissimum for the production of gluconic acid and citric acid, respectively. Additionally, besides glucose-based media, glycerol and crystal sugar were tested as alternative and cheaper carbon sources. The metabolic activity of P. simplicissimum allowed a maximum Pb leaching of 39–43% from the BT sample in 28 days in glycerol-based medium, while for the BC sample, the maximum Pb extraction was around 60% in glucose-based medium. A lower extraction of Pb was achieved with G. oxydans for both samples. The maximum extraction of 34% and 39% of Pb was reached within 7 days when glucose was used as the carbon source. Further optimization should address both the enhancement of metals removal and – especially for the organic acid bioleaching – the reduction of costs related to media formulation and fungal biomass production on a larger scale.

Accumulated Copper Tailing Solid Wastes with Specific Compositions Encourage Advances in Microbial Leaching

Abstract:Against the backdrop of the increasing copper demand in a low-carbon economy, this work statistically forecasted the distribution of China's copper tailings for the first time, and then characterized them as finely crushed and low-grade mining solid wastes containing copper mainly in the form of chalcopyrite, bornite, covelline, enargite and chalcocite based on available research data. China is the globally leading refined copper producer and consumer, where the typical commercial-scale bioleaching of copper tailings is conducted in the Dexing, Zijinshan and Jinchuan mining regions. And these leaching processes were compared in this study. Widely used chemolithoautotrophic and mesophilic bacteria are Acidithiobacillus, Leptospirillum, Acidiphilium, Alicyclobacillus and Thiobacillus with varied metal resistance. They can be used to treat copper sulfide tailings such as pyrite, chalcopyrite, enargite, chalcocite, bornite and covellite under sufficient dissolved oxygen from 1.5 to 4.1 mg/L and pH values ranging from 0.5 to 7.2. Moderate thermophiles (Acidithiobacillus caldus, Acidimicrobium, Acidiplasma, Ferroplasma and Sulfobacillus) and extreme thermophilic archaea (Acidianus, Metallosphaera, Sulfurococcus and Sulfolobus) are dominant in leaching systems with operating temperatures higher than 40 °C. However, these species are vulnerable to high pulp density and heavy metals. Heterotrophic Acidiphilium multivorum, Ferrimicrobium, Thermoplasma and fungi use organic carbon as energy to treat copper oxides (malachite, chrysocolla and azurite) and weathered sulfides (bornite, chalcocite, digenite and covellite) under a wide pH range and high pulp density. We also compared autotrophs in a planktonic state or biofilm to treat different metal sulfides using various sulfur-cycling enzymes involved in the polysulfide or thiosulfate pathways against fungi that produce various organic acids to chelate copper from oxides. Finally, we recommended a bioinformatic analysis of functional genes involved in Fe/S oxidization and C/N metabolism, as well as advanced representation that can create new possibilities for the development of high-efficiency leaching microorganisms and insight into the mechanisms of bioleaching desired metals from complex and low-grade copper tailings.

Acidithiobacillus species mediated mineral weathering promotes lead immobilization in ferric-silica microstructures at sulfidic tailings

Abstract:Immobilization and stabilization of heavy metals (HMs) in sulfidic and metallic tailings are critical to long-term pollution control and sustainable ecological rehabilitation. This study aims to unravel immobilization mechanisms of Pb (Ⅱ) in the neoformed hardpan structure resulting from Acidithiobacillus spp. accelerated bioweathering of sulfides in the presence of silicates. It was found that the bioweathered mineral composite exhibited an elevated Pb (Ⅱ) adsorption capacity compared to that of natural weathered mineral composite. A suit of microspectroscopic techniques such as synchrotron-based X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) indicated that secondary Fe-bearing minerals, functional groups, and surface properties in the neoformed hardpan were key factors contributing to Pb (Ⅱ) adsorption and immobilization in ferric-silica microstructures. The underlying mechanisms might involve surface adsorption-complexation, dissolution-precipitation, electrostatic attraction, and ion exchange. Microbial communities within the muscovite groups undergoing bioweathering processes demonstrated distinctive survival strategies and community composition under the prevailing geochemical conditions. This proof of concept regarding Pb (Ⅱ) immobilization in microbial transformed mineral composite would provide the basis for scaling up trials for developing field-feasible methodology to management HMs pollution in sulfidic and metallic tailings in near future.

Abstract:Due to the emission of hazardous chemicals and heat, the traditional smelting method used to extract critical minerals from ore and mine slag/tailings is considered bad for the environment. An environmentally friendly procedure that can stabilize sulfur emissions from mine waste without endangering the environment is bioleaching. In the present study, sequential oxidative (Oxi) and reductive (Red) bioleaching of acid-pretreated copper smelter slag using iron-oxidizing/reducing Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was applied to investigate critical minerals' recovery for the dissolution of copper smelter slag. In this batch flask experiment, up to 55% Cu was recovered on day 11 during the Oxi stage, which increased to 80% during the Red stage on day 20. A sequential oxidative and reductive bioleaching of an acid-pretreated copper smelter slag at pH (1.8) and 30 °C positively affects the extraction of Cu (80%), Zn (77.1%), and Al (65.3%). In contrast to the aerobic bioleaching experiment, the reduction of Fe3+ iron under anaerobic conditions resulted in a more significant release of Fe2+ and sulfate, limiting the development of jarosite, surface passivation, and the subsequent loss of metal recovery due to co-precipitation with Fe3+. Overall, the Oxi-Red bioleaching process combined with acid pretreatment showed promising results toward creating a method for recovering valuable metals from metallurgical waste that is economical and environmentally beneficial.

Abstract:Although neuroimaging studies have strongly implicated basal ganglia involvement in implicit sequence learning, serial reaction time (SRT) studies with Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have yielded mixed results. The present research sought to examine the ability of people with PD to implicitly learn sequences with different sequential structures and to objectively assess explicit knowledge. A version of the SRT task that reduces motor demands was used to compare 19 patients with PD but not dementia and 37 matched controls. PD patients showed less implicit sequence-specific learning for both sequences and reduced response time improvement over sequential trials for the more complex sequence. A closer examination revealed that the deficit involved higher order sequential associations as well as the learning of pairwise information.
Bioaugmentation with Acidithiobacillus species accelerates mineral weathering and formation of secondary mineral cements for hardpan development in sulfidic Pb-Zn tailings

Abstract:The development of hardpan caps has great potential in rehabilitating sulfidic and metallic tailings, which may be accelerated by using exogenous Acidithiobacillus species. The present study aims to establish a bioaugmentation process with exogenous Acidithiobacillus species for accelerating the weathering of sulfidic minerals and formation of secondary mineral gels as precursors for hardpan structure development in a microcosm experiment. Exogenous Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (ATCC 19377) and A. ferrooxidans (DSM 14882) were inoculated in a sulfidic Pb-Zn tailing containing negligible indigenous Acidithiobacillus species for accelerating the weathering of pyrite and metal sulfides. Microspectroscopic analysis revealed that the weathering of pyrite and biotite-like minerals was rapidly accelerated by exogenous Acidithiobacillus species, leading to the formation of secondary jarosite-like mineral gels and cemented profile in the tailings. Meanwhile, approximately 28% Zn liberated from Zn-rich minerals undergoing weathering was observed to be re-immobilized by Fe-rich secondary minerals such as jarosite-like mineral. Moreover, Pb-bearing minerals mostly remained undissolved, but approximately 30% Pb was immobilized by secondary Fe-rich minerals. The present findings revealed the critical role of exogenous Acidithiobacillus species in accelerating the precursory process of mineral weathering and secondary mineral formation for hardpan structure development in sulfidic Pb-Zn tailings.

Abstract:In view of water and soil getting polluted by Pb(II), Zn(II), and other heavy metals in tailings and acid mine drainage (AMD), we explored the removal effect of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) on Pb(II), Zn(II), and other pollutants in solution and tailings based on the microbial treatment technology. We used the scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray fluorescence (XRF), to reveal the mechanism of SRB treatment of tailings. The results showed that SRB had a strong removal capacity for Zn(II) at 0–40 mg/L; however, Zn(II) at 60–100 mg/L inhibited the growth of SRB. Similarly, SRB exhibited a very strong ability to remove Pb(II) from the solution. At a Pb(II) concentration of 10–50 mg/L, its removal percentage by SRB was 100%. SRB treatment could effectively immobilize the pollutants leached from the tailings. With an increase in the amount of tailings added to each layer, the ability of SRB to treat the pollutants diminished. When 1 cm of tailingssand was added to each layer, SRB had the best effect on tailing sand treatment. After treatment, the immobilization rates of SO42- , Fe(III), Mn(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), and total Cr in the leachate of #1 tailing sand were 95.44%, 100%, 90.88%, 100%, 96.20%, 86.23%, and 93.34%, respectively. After the tailings were treated by SRB, although the tailings solidified into a cohesive mass from loose granular particles, their mechanical strength was <0.2 MPa. Desulfovibrio and Desulfohalotomaculum played the predominant roles in treating tailings by mixing SRB. The S 2− and carbonate produced by mixing SRB during the treatment of tailings could metabolize sulfate by combining with the heavy metal ions released by the tailings to form FeS, MnS, ZnS, CuS, PbS, Cr 2 S 3 , CaCO 3 , MnCO 3 , and other precipitated particles. These particles were attached to the surface of the tailings, reducing the environmental pollution of the tailings in the water and soil around the mining area.

Abstract:Acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) remains a challenging issue for the mining sector. AMD management strategies have attempted to shift from treatment of acid leachates post-generation to more sustainable at-source prevention. Here, the efficacy of microbial-geochemical at-source control approach was investigated over a period of 84 weeks. Diverse microbial communities were stimulated using organic carbon amendment in a simulated silicate-containing sulfidic mine waste rock environment. Mineral waste in the unamended leach system generated AMD quickly and throughout the study, with known lithotrophic iron- and sulfur-oxidising microbes dominating column communities. The organic-amended mineral waste column showed suppressed metal dissolution and AMD generation. Molecular DNA-based next generation sequencing confirmed a less diverse lithotrophic community in the acid-producing control, with a more diverse microbial community under organic amendment comprising organotrophic iron/sulfur-reducers, autotrophs, hydrogenotrophs and heterotrophs. Time-series multivariate statistical analyses displayed distinct ecological patterns in microbial diversity between AMD- and non-AMD-environments. Focused ion beam-TEM micrographs and elemental mapping showed that silicate-stabilised passivation layers were successfully established across pyrite surfaces in organic-amended treatments, with these layers absent in unamended controls. Organic amendment and resulting increases in microbial abundance and diversity played an important role in sustaining these passivating layers in the long-term.
Mechanism of Sulfobacillus benefaciens enhancing the lead ⁃ zinc sulfide tailings bioleaching performance by moderate thermophilic consortia

Abstract:To overcome the problems of long cycle and low efficiency of bioleaching the lead⁃zinc sulfide tailings, this study applied Leptospirillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus caldus in equal proportion to constructed a moderate thermophilic consortia to leach lead⁃zinc sulfide. The influence of introducing a facultative autotrophic iron / sulfur⁃oxidizer Sulfobacillus benefaciens on the process of bioleaching tailings was investigated. The results showed that Zn leaching rate of by L.ferriphilum and A.caldus consortia reached 93.94% only in 8 days. With the introduction of S.benefaciens, the leaching system maintained a higher redox potential and microbial activity, and the ferric iron and total iron concentration increased during the leaching process. The relative leaching rate of Zn increased by 13.63% within 4 days, and the Zn leaching rate reached 96.08% within 8 days. Therefore, the addition of S.benefaciens enhanced the leaching efficiency of the moderate thermophilic consortia. Correlation analysis indicated that polysaccharides, protein, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) showed a significant correlation with the changes in solution media parameters during the leaching process. Moreover, the result of surface functional groups and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) confirmed that the introduction of S.benefaciens in the leaching process promoted the consortia to produce more proteins and carbohydrates, which could improve the leaching efficiency of moderate thermophilic bacteria, accelerated the leaching of valuable metals in lead⁃zinc sulfide tailings, and reduced its environmental toxicity.

Natural pretreatment and passive remediation of highly polluted acid mine drainage

Abstract:Acid mine drainage (AMD) from the Iberian Pyrite Belt has high acidity and metal concentrations. Earlier pilot experiments, based on limestone sand dispersed in wood shavings (dispersed alkaline substrate; DAS) have been shown to be an efficient treatment option. However, complete metal removal was not achieved, principally due to the high ferrous iron concentration in the inflow AMD. In order to oxidize and remove iron, a natural Fe-oxidizing lagoon (NFOL) was added prior to treatment with limestone-DAS. The NFOL comprises several pre-existing Fe-stromatolite terraces and cascades, and a lagoon with a volume of 100 m(3) built near the mine shaft. Downstream of the NFOL, the limestone-DAS treatment consists of two reactive tanks of 3 m(3) each filled with limestone-DAS reactive substrate, connected in series with two decantation ponds of 6 m(3) each and several oxidation cascades. The AMD emerging from the mine shaft displayed a pH near 3, a net acidity of 1800 mg/L as CaCO(3) equivalents, and mean concentrations of 440 mg/L Zn; 275 mg/L Fe (99% Fe(II)); 3600 mg/L SO(4); 250 mg/L Ca; 100 mg/L Al; 15 mg/L Mn; 5 mg/L Cu; and 0.1-1 mg/L As, Pb, Cr, Cd, Co, and Ni. The oxidation induced in the NFOL enhanced ferric iron concentration, showing an average of 65% oxidation and 38% retention during the monitoring period. The whole system removed a mean of 1350 mg/L net acidity as CaCO(3) equivalents (71% of inflow); corresponding to 100% of Fe, Al, Cu, Pb and As, and 6% of Zn.
