Abstract:We demonstrated experimentally and theoretically the principle to control the discotic morphology of particles with a layered internal structure. The packing of surfactants tailored the curvature and set the shape of the elastic membrane produced as the surface of the emulsions crystallized via surface freezing. Using these membranes as the nuclei, emulsions crystallized from the surface to the centre, forming a layered structure. The final shape of the disks could be either biconcave or flat circular depending on the defect structures of the layers. We confirmed that the final aspect ratio of these disks could be controlled by varying co-surfactant concentration on the surface. We also showed that the morphology of anisotropic particles is vital to their self-assembling behaviours. This surface controlled organization of molecules and colloids offers novel routes for soft material design, fabrication, and utilization at micro-scales.
Role of surfactant-induced Marangoni effects in droplet dynamics on a solid surface in shear flow

Abstract:We address the dynamics of a surfactant-laden droplet on a solid surface in simple shear flow numerically. Our analysis uses the front-tracking method to take surfactant transport into account. The interfacial tension and the slip coefficient, both of which depend heavily on the surfactant concentration, are fully integrated into the generalized Navier boundary condition to model the moving contact lines. Accurate prediction of droplet motion indicates that the surfactant can change droplet behavior drastically. Surfactant-induced effects, such as interfacial tension reduction, the Marangoni stress, and wettability alternation, are investigated for various capillary numbers, surface wettabilities, elasticity numbers, and surface Péclet numbers. Deformation and motion of a sliding droplet are enhanced by the Marangoni effect, which is associated with an interfacial tension gradient. When the capillary number reaches a critical value, the sliding-to-detachment and detachment-to-pinch-off transitions occur. Both transitions can be triggered and accelerated by a surfactant, especially when convection is dominant. As a result, the critical capillary number decreases, but exhibits a non-monotonic relationship with the elasticity number and Péclet number. The mechanisms that underlie the effect of Marangoni stress are discussed by analyzing the distributions of the surfactant concentration and the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the droplet. Accumulation of surfactants near the receding contact line reverses the local concentration gradient, attempts to change its direction along the interface, and delays droplet detachment. Furthermore, the strong surfactant dilution reduces both the surfactant concentration and the interfacial tension gradient, and thereby increasing the critical value for droplet pinch-off.
Migration and deformation of a droplet enclosing an active particle

Abstract:The encapsulation of active particles, such as bacteria or active colloids, inside a droplet gives rise to nontrivial shape dynamics and droplet motility. To understand this behavior, we derive an asymptotic solution for the fluid flow about a deformable droplet containing an active particle, modeled as a Stokes-flow singularity, in the case of small shape distortions. Offsetting of the active particle from the center of the drop breaks symmetry and leads to excitation of large number of shape modes as well as particle and drop displacement. Flows due to common singularity representations of active particles, such as Stokeslets, rotlets, and stresslets, are computed and compared to results for non-deformable droplets enclosing active particles. The effect of interfacial properties is also investigated. Surfactants adsorbed at the droplet interface immobilize the interface and arrest the droplet motion. Our results highlight strategies to steer the flows of active particles and create autonomously navigating containers.

Abstract:<p>Many uses of emulsion droplets require precise control over droplet size and shape. Here we report a 'shape-memorable' micro-droplet formulation stabilized by a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-modified protein-surfactant, the droplets are stable against coalescence for months and can maintain non-spherical shapes for hours, depending on the surface coverage of PEGylated protein. Monodisperse droplets with aspect ratios ranging from 1.0 to 3.4 were controllably synthesized with a flow-focusing microfluidic device. Mechanical properties of the interfacial protein network were explored to elucidate the mechanism behind the droplet shape conservation phenomenon. Characterization of the protein film revealed that the presence of a PEG layer at interfaces alters the mechanical responses of the protein film, resulting in interfacial networks with improved strength. Taking advantage of the prolonged stabilization of non-spherical droplets, we demonstrate functionalization of the droplet interface with accessible biotin moieties. The stabilization of micro-droplet shape with surface-active proteins that also serve as an anchor for integrating functional moieties, provides a tailorable interface for diverse biomimetic applications.</p>

Liquid Plasticine: Controlled Deformation and Recovery of Droplets with Interfacial Nanoparticle Jamming.

Abstract:Air-exposed droplet systems are widely applied in material preparation and experimental design. Recently, a droplet system with unusual properties featured by a liquid-like appearance and solid-like deformability was produced. However, it was then just an interesting and perplexing phenomenon in the absence of basic understandings and clear perspectives for applications. Here we reveal that stable droplet deformation is attributed to monolayer nanoparticle jamming at the water/vapor interface, and that the normal shape can be recovered by jamming relieving. The degree of jamming affects the droplet shape and transparency and can be tuned by the squeezing force and droplet volume. Using these properties and control methods, we develop the deformed droplet into "liquid plasticine" with predesigned shapes, super-high transparency, and arbitrarily large volume. We demonstrate that liquid plasticine could be used as liquid lenses, channel-like containers, and miniature reactors.
Flattened and wrinkled encapsulated droplets: Shape-morphing induced by gravity and evaporation

Abstract:We report surprising morphological changes of suspension droplets (containing class II hydrophobin protein HFBI from Trichoderma reesei and water) as they evaporate with a contact line pinned on a rigid solid substrate. Both pendant and sessile droplets display the formation of an encapsulating elastic film as the bulk concentration of solute reaches a critical value during evaporation, but the morphology of the droplet varies significantly: for sessile droplets, the elastic film ultimately crumples in a nearly flattened area close to the apex while in pendant droplets, circumferential wrinkling occurs close to the contact line. These different morphologies are understood through a gravito-elasto-capillary model that predicts the droplet morphology and the onset of shape changes, as well as showing that the influence of the direction of gravity remains crucial even for very small droplets (where the effect of gravity can normally be neglected). The results pave the way to control droplet shape in several engineering and biomedical applications.

Abstract:The dynamics of soft microparticles enclosed in a droplet flowing in a channel is an unexplored fundamental problem that lies at the heart of numerous applications, including droplet-based microfluidics, tissue engineering and smart material synthesis. Here we show that enclosing a flexible capsule into a droplet can amplify the capsule's deformation parameters in channel flow by up to two orders of magnitude. Previously unreported capsule equilibrium shapes in channel flow, including an oblate spheroid and a reversed bullet, have also been discovered. We propose two theoretical models to predict the equilibrium position of the capsule inside the droplet, and estimate the capsule deformation, respectively. The present study provides an effective but simple approach to enhance and control the deformation of soft particles in a flowing suspension, which may inspire widespread applications, from high-throughput single-cell mechanical phenotyping, enhanced cross-membrane drug delivery, to manufacturing shape-controlled non-spherical particles and artificial cells.

Abstract:Control over emulsion stability and phase separation is important for industries such as oil and gas, where it is critical to remove all the oil content from oily wastewater before discharging it into the environment or, conversely, to remove small droplets of water from oil prior to upgrading. Prior work has qualitatively shown that it may be possible for crude oil emulsions to be highly stable at rest and then rapidly destabilized by shearing interactions between droplets due to a phenomenon that we coin shear-triggered coalescence in this paper. In this paper, we provide quantitative evidence of this phenomenon using a cantilevered-capillary force apparatus to precisely manipulate two liquid droplets within another immiscible liquid (i.e., mineral oil in water or water in mineral oil). We first show that droplets in surfactant solutions clearly do not exhibit shear-triggered coalescence because they have the same probability of coalescing when a head-on collision of the droplets is compared to a shearing collision. In contrast, we show that when droplets have spherical Janus microparticles adsorbed onto the interface, the droplets undergoing shearing collisions coalesce faster than those undergoing a head-on collision. Similarly, we show that when rod-shaped nanoparticles (cellulose nanocrystals) are adsorbed onto the interface, with an intermediate salt concentration in the suspending phase, that shear-triggered coalescence occurs in dramatic fashion. We offer mechanistic explanations for why shear-triggered coalescence is possible in these two cases, but is not observed in other cases such as with disklike microparticles, non-Janus spherical microparticles, or rodlike nanoparticles without electrostatic screening or with strong electrostatic screening. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.9.023602 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Due to the potential application of regulating droplet shape by external fields in microfluidic technology and micro devices, it becomes increasingly important to understand the shape formation of a droplet in the presence of an electric field. How to understand and determine such a deformable boundary shape at equilibrium has been a long-term physical and mathematical challenge. Here, based on the theoretical model we propose, and combining the finite element method and the gradient descent algorithm, we successfully obtain the droplet shape by considering the contributions made by electrostatic energy, surface tension energy, and gravitational potential energy. We also carry out scaling analyses and obtain an empirical critical disruption condition with a universal scaling exponent 1/2 for the contact angle in terms of normalized volume. The master curve fits both the experimental and the numerical results very well.

Abstract:Hypothesis Immiscible liquids are commonly used to achieve unique functions in many applications, where the breakup of compound droplets in airflow is an important process. Due to the existence of the liquid-liquid interface, compound droplets are expected to form different deformation and breakup morphologies compared with single-component droplets. Experiments We investigate experimentally the deformation and breakup of compound droplets in airflow. The deformation characteristics of compound droplets are quantitatively analyzed and compared with single-component droplets. Theoretical models are proposed to analyze the transition between breakup morphologies. Findings The breakup modes of compound droplets are classified into shell retraction, shell breakup, and core-shell breakup based on the location where the breakup occurs. The comparison with single-component droplets reveals that the compound droplet is stretched more in the flow direction and expands less in the cross-flow direction, and these differences occur when the core of the compound droplet protrudes into the airflow. The transition conditions between different breakup modes are obtained theoretically. In addition, the eccentricity of the compound droplet can lead to the formation of the thick ligament or the two stamens in the droplet middle.

Abstract:Cooled oil emulsion droplets in aqueous surfactant solution have been observed to flatten into a remarkable host of polygonal shapes with straight edges and sharp corners, but different driving mechanisms—(i) a partial phase transition of the liquid bulk oil into a plastic rotator phase near the droplet interface and (ii) buckling of the interfacially frozen surfactant monolayer enabled by a drastic lowering of surface tension—have been proposed. Here, combining experiment and theory, we analyze the initial stages of the evolution of these “shape-shifting” droplets, during which a polyhedral droplet flattens into a polygonal platelet under cooling and gravity. Using reflected-light microscopy, we reveal how icosahedral droplets evolve through an intermediate octahedral stage to flatten into hexagonal platelets. This behavior is reproduced by a theoretical model of the phase transition mechanism, but the buckling mechanism can only reproduce the flattening if the deformations are driven by buoyancy. This requires surface tension to decrease by several orders of magnitude during cooling and yields bending modulus estimates orders of magnitude below experimental values. The analysis thus shows that the phase transition mechanism underlies the observed “shape-shifting” phenomena.

Abstract:Active droplets are artificial microswimmers built from a liquid dispersion by microfluidic tools and showing self-propelled motion. These systems hold particular interest for mimicking biological phenomena, such as some aspects of cell locomotion and collective behaviors of bacterial colonies, as well as for the design of droplet-based biologically inspired materials, such as engineered tissues. Growing evidence suggests that geometrical confinement crucially affects their morphology and motility, but the driving physical mechanisms are still poorly understood. Here we study the effect of activity on a droplet containing a contractile polar fluid confined within microfluidic channels of various sizes. We find a surprising wealth of shapes and dynamic regimes, whose mechanics is regulated by a subtle interplay between contractile stress, droplet elasticity and microchannel width. They range from worm-like and cell-like shaped droplets displaying an oscillating behavior within wider channels to bullet-shaped droplets exhibiting rectilinear motion in narrower slits. Our findings support the view that geometrical confinement can provide a viable strategy to control and predict the propulsion direction of active droplets. It would be of interest to look for analogues of these motility modes in biological cells or in synthetic active matter.

Abstract:Microscale Janus particles have versatile potential applications in many physical and biomedical fields, such as microsensor, micromotor, and drug delivery. Here, we present a phase-field approach of multicomponent and multiphase to investigate the Janus droplet formation via thermally induced phase separation. The crucial kinetics for the formation of Janus droplets consisting of two polymer species and a solvent component via an interplay of both diffusion and convection is considered in the Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes equation. The simulation results of the phase-field model show that unequal interfacial tensions between the two polymer species and the solvent result in asymmetric phase separation in the formation process of Janus droplets. This asymmetric phase separation plays a vital role in the establishment of the so-called core-shell structure that has been observed in previous experiments. By varying the droplet size, the surface tension, and the molecular interaction between the polymer species, several novel droplet morphologies are predicted in the development process of Janus droplets. Moreover, we stress that the hydrodynamics should be reckoned as a non-negligible mechanism that not only accelerates the Janus droplet evolution but also has great impacts on the coarsening and coalescence of the Janus droplets.

Abstract:Droplets generated through microfluidics serve as a common platform for assembling artificial cells, which are feasibly tailored using microfluidic methodology. The ability of natural cells to undergo shape changes, such as phagocytosis, is a typical characteristic that researchers aim to mimic in artificial cells. However, simulating the deformation behavior of natural cells within droplets is exceptionally challenging. Here, this study reports a pinocytosis-like phenomenon observed in droplets, termed "droplet drinking". When droplets traverse a capillary with constrictions, the shear force from the continuous-phase fluid induces relative motion within the droplets, creating concave regions at the rear. These regions facilitate engulfing of the continuous-phase fluid, resulting in the formation of multiple emulsions. This behavior is influenced by the capillary number, and the size of the ingested droplets is governed by the interfacial tension between the two phases. The production of multicore or multi-shell emulsions can be easily accomplished by making slight adjustments to the constrictions. Furthermore, this method demonstrates the integration of reactants into pre-existing droplets, facilitating biochemical reactions. This study presents a convenient approach for generating complex emulsions and an innovative strategy for studying deformation behavior in droplet-based artificial cells.

Abstract:Perpendicular flow is used to induce oil droplet breakup by using a capillary as water phase flow channel. It is a new route to produce monodisperse emulsions. The wetting properties of the fluids on the walls are exceedingly important parameters. Depending on the oil and water flow rates, different spatial distributions of the two phases as laminar, plugs, cobbles and drops, are obtained. The effects of two-phase flow rates on plugs and drop size are studied, and the different droplet formation mechanisms of plug flow and drop flow are discussed. Two quantitative equations utilized to predict the droplet size are developed.
Self-assembled nanoparticle-coated interfaces: Capillary pressure, shell formation and buckling

Abstract:Hypothesis: Particle accumulation at liquid-liquid or liquid-gas interfaces can significantly alter capillary behavior and give rise to unusual interfacial phenomena including the asymmetric macroscopic mechanical response of the interface. Experiments: This study explores the accumulation of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-modified nanoparticles at fluid interfaces and the subsequent mechanical response of nanoparticle-coated droplets during contraction and expansion. Droplet tests involve the simultaneous recording of the droplet shape and the capillary pressure. Complementary single-pore experiments examine the response of particle-coated interfaces as they traverse a pore constriction. Findings: Interfaces promote order. The time-dependent nanoparticle accumulation at the interface is diffusion-controlled. The nanoparticle coated droplets can sustain negative capillary pressure before they buckle. Buckling patterns strongly depend on the boundary conditions: non-slip boundary conditions lead to crumples while slip boundary conditions result in just a few depressions. The particle-coated interface exhibits asymmetric behavior in response to particle-level capillary forces: an "oil droplet in a nanofluid bath" withstands a significantly higher capillary pressure difference than a "nanofluid droplet in an oil bath". A first-order equilibrium analysis of interaction forces explains the asymmetric response. Single-constriction experiments show that the formation of particle-coated interfaces has a pronounced effect on fluid displacement in porous media.
Use of Hydroxyapatite Cement to Support Implants in Extraction Sockets

Abstract:&NA; Bioactive cements based on calcium phosphate chemistry have been developed to serve as bone substitute materials. One such commerical product, BoneSourceTM, is a hydroxyapatite cement (HAC) used for small bone defects in the craniofacial complex. We have investigated the possibility that HAC could be used to support bone growth adjacent to dental implants placed in immediate tooth extraction sites. Variable levels of bone contact were noted up to 3 months postimplantation. Considerable loss of HAC occurred and was thought to be because of “washout” of the cement before complete cement setting. When HAC was immobile in the surgical site, the bioactive nature of the cement led to HAC resorption and bone deposition. Efforts to maintain the HAC in situ should be expanded so that the full clinical potential of the HAC can be realized. (Implant Dent 2000;9:45‐50)
Buckling in Armored Droplets

Abstract:The issue of the buckling mechanism in droplets stabilized by solid particles (armored droplets) is tackled at a mesoscopic level using dissipative particle dynamics simulations. We consider spherical water droplet in a decane solvent coated with nanoparticle monolayers of two different types: Janus and homogeneous. The chosen particles yield comparable initial three-phase contact angles, chosen to maximize the adsorption energy at the interface. We study the interplay between the evolution of droplet shape, layering of the particles, and their distribution at the interface when the volume of the droplets is reduced. We show that Janus particles affect strongly the shape of the droplet with the formation of a crater-like depression. This evolution is actively controlled by a close-packed particle monolayer at the curved interface. On the contrary, homogeneous particles follow passively the volume reduction of the droplet, whose shape does not deviate too much from spherical, even when a nanoparticle monolayer/bilayer transition is detected at the interface. We discuss how these buckled armored droplets might be of relevance in various applications including potential drug delivery systems and biomimetic design of functional surfaces.

Abstract:The control of coalescence and motion of droplets play a significant role in advanced technology and our daily life, and one of the most important approaches is surface design. Here, the microtextured surfaces decorated with wrinkled substrates are designed and studied for coalescence behaviors. The simulation results show that the coalescence speed would be slower on such surfaces due to the downward movement of the droplets induced by the penetration of atoms into the grooves that delays their movement along the coalescence direction, which is considered as a restriction effect. With the increase of the angles and the interval distance of wrinkled structures, the coalescence time becomes longer and the coalescing process becomes unfavorable, resulting from the enhanced restriction effect. More importantly, a composite substrate possessing the original and sub-wrinkled structures has been designed to tune the coalescence dynamics. Abstract:A new droplet breakup mechanism is previously proposed—interface‐shrinkage‐driven breakup. In coaxial microdevices, when the contact angle between the continuous phase and dispersed fluid channel (DFC) is sufficiently low, the new mechanism instead of the classic shear‐driven mechanism dominates the breakup. The present study further investigated the new mechanism in microdevices with DFCs of different shape. Critical contact angles in different devices were determined by theoretical analysis and verified by experiments. It was found that the critical contact angle for the new mechanism depends on the shape of the DFC. The droplet size was measured for different devices when the new mechanism dominated the breakup. In contrast to the case for the shear‐driven mechanism, the droplet size is little affected by the capillary number.
