Abstract:Cropping systems greatly impact the productivity and resilience of agricultural ecosystems. However, we often lack an understanding of the quantitative interactions among social, economic and ecological components in each of the systems, especially with regard to crop rotation. Current production systems cannot guarantee both high profits in the short term and social and ecological benefits in the long term. This study combined statistic and economic models to evaluate the comprehensive effects of cropping systems on rice production using data collected from experimental fields between 2017 and 2018. The results showed that increasing agricultural diversity through rotations, particularly potato–rice rotation (PR), significantly increased the social, economic and ecological benefits of rice production. Yields, profits, profit margins, weighted dimensionless values of soil chemical and physical (SCP) and heavy metal (SHM) traits, benefits and externalities generated by PR and other rotations were generally higher than successive rice cropping. This suggests that agricultural diversity through rotations, particularly PR rotation, is worth implementing due to its overall benefits generated in rice production. However, due to various nutrient residues from preceding crops, fertilizer application should be rationalized to improve the resource and investment efficiency. Furthermore, we internalized the externalities (hidden ecological and social benefits/costs) generated by each of the rotation systems and proposed ways of incenting farmers to adopt crop rotation approaches for sustainable rice production.
Effects of Fertilization with Reducing Nitrogen, Controlling Phosphorus and Stabilizing Potassium on Rice Yield and Nutrient Accumulation

Abstract:Excessive application of nitrogen and phosphorus and lower potassium supply not only limit rice growth,but also reduce nutrient use efficiency.In this paper,a field experiment was conducted to study the effects of reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages and stabilizing potassium supply on rice yield,nutrient accumulation and fertilizer use efficiency.There were fourteen treatments with two replications.The results indicate that the straw biomass and grain yields of the treatments with integrated N-K,P-K,or N-P-K applications are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of the no fertilizer treatment.The straw biomass of the treatment with less nitrogen and phosphorus and more potassium application(T11,modified treatment,N 225 kg/ha,P2O5 60 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha) is significantly(P0.05) higher than that of the conventional fertilization treatment(CFA,N 300 kg/ha,P2O5 150 kg/ha,K2O 60 kg/ha) and the differences of kernel weight and grain yield between the two treatments are obvious.The nitrogen and potassium contents in shoots at the tillering stage and in straw at the harvest stage,the accumulated nitrogen and potassium amounts in above ground organs at the harvest stage,as well as apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies of the modified treatment are significantly(P0.05) higher than those of CFA.These results imply that properly reducing nitrogen and phosphorus dosages,and increasing potassium dosages could catch nitrogen and potassium need of rice plants,increase dry matter accumulation and grain yield,and improve apparent nitrogen and phosphorus use efficiencies.The fertilization scheme of N 196.2 kg/ha,P2O5 46.5 kg/ha and K2O 90 kg/ha should be recommended for practical rice production under local conditions.
Reasonable Nitrogen Fertilizer Management Improves Rice Yield and Quality under a Rapeseed/Wheat–Rice Rotation System

Abstract:To determine the influence of N fertilizer management on rice yield and rice quality under diversified rotations and establish a high-yield, high-quality, and environmentally friendly diversified planting technology, a rapeseed/wheat–rice rotation system for 2 successive years was implemented. In those rotation systems, a conventional N rate (Nc; 180 kg/hm2 N in rape season, 150 kg/hm2 N in wheat season) and a reduced N rate (Nr; 150 kg/hm2 N in rape season, 120 kg/hm2 N in wheat season) were applied. Based on an application rate of 150 kg/hm2 N in the rice season, three N management models were applied, in which the application ratio of base:tiller:panicle fertilizer was 20%:20%:60% in treatment M1, 30%:30%:40% in treatment M2, and 40%:40%:20% in treatment M3. Zero N was used as the control (M0). The results showed that, under Nc and Nr in the rape season, M3 management produced an increase in rice yield. The average rice yields in 2018 and 2019 were 9.41 t/hm2 and 9.54 t/hm2, respectively. An increase in rice peak viscosity, hot viscosity, break disintegration, and chalkiness was achieved. Under Nc and Nr in the wheat season, the panicle fertilizer of 40%:40%:20% in rice season produced a higher rice yield. The average yield was 9.45 t/hm2 and 9.19 t/hm2, respectively, and an increase in rice peak viscosity, hot viscosity, and break disintegration was produced. Reduced N for rapeseed and the panicle fertilizer of 40%:40%:20% in rice season under a rapeseed–rice rotation system can be recommended to stabilize yield and ensure high-quality rice production and environmentally friendly rapeseed–rice rotation systems in southern China.

Long-Term Green Manure Rotations Improve Soil Biochemical Properties, Yield Sustainability and Nutrient Balances in Acidic Paddy Soil under a Rice-Based Cropping System

Abstract:Cultivation of green manure (GM) crops in intensive cropping systems is important for enhancing crop productivity through soil quality improvement. We investigated yield sustainability, nutrient stocks, nutrient balances and enzyme activities affected by different long-term (1982–2016) green manure rotations in acidic paddy soil in a double-rice cropping system. We selected four treatments from a long-term experiment, including (1) rice-rice-winter fallow as a control treatment (R-R-F), (2) rice-rice-milkvetch (R-R-M), (3) rice-rice-rapeseed (R-R-R), and (4) rice-rice-ryegrass (R-R-G). The results showed that different GM rotations increased grain yield and the sustainable yield index compared with those of the R-R-F treatment. Compared with those of R-R-F, the average grain yield of early rice in R-R-M, R-R-R, and R-R-G increased by 45%, 29%, and 27%, respectively and that of late rice increased by 46%, 28%, and 26%, respectively. Over the years, grain yield increased in all treatments except R-R-F. Green manure also improved the soil chemical properties (SOM and total and available N and P), except soil pH, compared to those of the control treatment. During the 1983–1990 cultivation period, the soil pH of the R-R-M treatment was lower than that of the R-R-F treatment. The addition of green manure did not mitigate the soil acidification caused by the use of inorganic fertilizers. The soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) contents and stocks of C, N and P increased over the years. Furthermore, GM significantly increased phosphatase and urease activities and decreased the apparent N and P balances compared with those in the winter fallow treatment. Variance partitioning analysis revealed that soil properties, cropping systems, and climatic factors significantly influenced annual grain yield. Aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analysis quantified the relative influences of the different soil properties on annual grain yield and showed that the relative influences of TN content, SOM, pH, and TP content on annual crop yield were 27.8%, 25.7%, 22.9%, and 20.7%, respectively. In conclusion, GM rotation is beneficial for sustaining high crop yields by improving soil biochemical properties and reducing N and P balances in acidic soil under double- rice cropping systems.

Abstract:Ratoon rice is considered an eco-friendly and resource-efficient method for rice cultivation, providing innovative strategies to mitigate the global food crisis. To clarify the critical yield components for achieving high annual grain yield in ratoon rice, data from 136 widely cultivated rice cultivars were collected through a six-year field experiment. The study analyzed the correlations between yield components and yields for both the main season and the ratoon season, indicating that main yields vary between 5.9 and 10.9 Mg ha −1 , exhibiting a highly significant positive correlation with spikelets per panicle; ratoon yields range from 1.8 to 7.1 Mg ha −1 , showing a highly significant positive correlation with panicles per m 2 , grain filling rate, and 1000-grain weight. Path analysis reveals that, in terms of contributing to ratoon yield, the grain filling rate is the most influential component, followed by panicles per m 2 , and 1000-grain weight. Therefore, by selecting large-panicle cultivars in the main season and enhancing panicles per m 2 , grain filling rate, and grain weight in the ratoon season, high annual yield in ratoon rice can be realized.

Abstract:Ground cover rice production system (GCRPS) is known to increase grain yield and reduce irrigation water and greenhouse gas emission. However, whether this innovative technology affects commercial and nutritional rice quality remains unknown. Thus, a three-year field experiment was conducted to compare three production systems: traditional paddy (Paddy) and GCRPS under two soil moisture conditions, namely, saturated and 80% of soil water-holding capacity combined with three nitrogen fertilizer regimes. We analyzed the grain-milling quality (brown rice rate, milled rice rate and head rice recovery), the appearance quality (chalky rice rate and grain size), eating quality (amylose concentration) and nutritional quality (protein and 15 amino acids concentration). Results showed that compared with Paddy, the average rice grain yield, water and nitrogen use efficiency were significantly higher in GCRPS. The milling quality was improved in GCRPS, whereas the appearance quality decreased. Amylose concentration was 7.6% higher in saturated GCRPS than in Paddy. Moreover, protein concentration was 11.5%–13.1% lower in GCRPS than in Paddy and total amino acid concentration was reduced by 6.9%, whereas protein and total amino acid yield were significantly improved. Meanwhile, the concentrations of six essential amino acids were similar to those in Paddy, whereas non-essential amino acid concentration decreased in GCRPS. Overall, our findings showed that suitable N management practices for GCRPS are to be developed to further enhance the protein and amino acid concentrations.

Abstract:Resource scarcity, large environmental footprint and low economic profits are great challenges faced by global crop production. Development of feasible cropping systems that can coordinate productivity and sustainability is critical for addressing these challenges. Here, field experiments were conducted from 2017 to 2020 to compare the energy equivalent yield, energy use efficiency, labor and water productivity, carbon footprint, and net ecosystem economic benefits of the six rice-based crop rotation systems in central China, including rice-wheat (RW), rice-rapeseed (RRs), double-season rice (DR), ratoon rice (RR), maize-rice (MR), and rice-fallow systems (RF). The results demonstrated that MR had the highest energy equivalent yield of 20.3 Mg ha−1 among all the tested rotation systems, which was significantly increased by 28.0%, 32.8%, 18.9%, 26.9%, and 99.5% compared with that of RW, RRs, DR, RR, and RF, respectively. MR and RR achieved higher energy use efficiency than RW, RRs and DR due to their higher total energy output and lower total energy input, respectively. Meanwhile, MR and RR also exhibited the highest water and labor productivity among these rotation systems, respectively. Furthermore, their carbon footprint per area and per energy output were comparable to those of RW and RRs, but significantly lower than those of DR. Overall, MR and RR increased the net ecosystem economic benefits by 12.6–76.8% and 25.1–188.3% relative to other four traditional systems (RRs, RW, DR and RF), respectively. These results suggest that MR and RR are the recommended feasible rice-based crop rotation systems to coordinate high productivity, resource use efficiency, and economic benefit with lower carbon footprint in central China.

Abstract:Intensive cropping, especially of rice, is considered to contribute to negative effects not only on soil chemical and biological properties but also on long-term grain yield. Appropriate crop rotation is often practiced as an alternative strategy to overcome the negative side effects of intensive cropping. Although soil microbial diversity and community structure have been shown to respond differently to altered agricultural management practices, little is known about possible links between crop rotation and grain yield on bacterial communities in rice paddy soil. In this study, we investigated the impact of specific rotational crops and compared it with intensive rice cultivation. The main crop rice (Oryza sativa) was rotated with maize (Zea mays) and mungbean (Phaseolus aureus) in different combinations in a system cultivating three crops per year. Soil bacterial communities were studied in two different cropping periods using pyrosequencing of the variable V4 region of the 16S rRNA. Our results showed that rotation with alternative crops increased rice yield by 24–46% depending on rotation structure and that bacterial community structure was altered in the presence of mungbean and/or maize compared to that in rice monoculture. In the crop rotation systems, composition, abundance, and diversity of soil bacterial communities were significantly different and higher than those in rice monoculture. Our results show that effects of crop rotation relate to changes in soil bacterial community structure suggesting that appropriate crop rotations provide a feasible practice to maintain the equilibrium in soil microbial environment for sustainable rice cultivation.

Abstract:Abstract Simplified cultivation methods for rice production offer considerable social, economic, and environmental benefits. However, limited information is available on yield components of rice grown using simplified cultivation methods in a rice-ratoon rice cropping system. A field experiment using two hybrid and two inbred rice cultivars was conducted to compare four cultivation methods (conventional tillage and transplanting, CTTP; conventional tillage and direct seeding, CTDS; no-tillage and transplanting, NTTP; no-tillage and direct seeding, NTDS) in a rice-ratoon rice system from 2017 to 2020. Main season yields for CTDS and NTDS were higher than for CTTP by 6.1% and 2.8%, respectively; whereas ratoon season yields for CTDS and NTDS were equal to or higher than for CTTP. Annual grain yields for CTDS and NTDS were higher than for CTTP by 4.4% and 3.2%, respectively. The higher CTDS and NTDS yields were associated with higher panicle numbers per m 2 and biomass production. Rice hybrids had higher yields than inbred cultivars by 15.8–19.3% for main season and by 15.6–19.4% for ratoon season, which was attributed to long growth duration, high grain weight and biomass production. Our results suggest that CTTP can be replaced by CTDS and NTDS to maintain high grain yields and save labor costs. Developing cultivars with high grain weight could be a feasible approach to achieve high rice yields in the rice-ratoon rice cropping system in southwest China.

Higher Yield Sustainability and Soil Quality by Manure Amendment Than Straw Returning under a Single-Rice Cropping System

Abstract:Context: Combined application of chemical fertilizers with organic amendments has been shown to improve soil fertility and agronomic performance of rice.Research question: The responses of sustainable rice production and soil quality to long-term different fertilization regimes have not been widely discussed. What is the effect on rice yield and soil quality under different fertilization management practices?Methods: A ten-year field trial was performed to systematic evaluation the impact of different fertilization regimes [no fertilized (control), chemical fertilizers alone (NPK), NPK along with cattle manure application (NPK+m), NPK along with rice straw return (NPK+s)] on rice grain yield, yield sustainability, and soil quality. A total of twenty soil indicators in two-layer soil depth (0-15 cm and 15-30 cm) were determined, including soil physical, chemical and biological indicators.Results: The NPK+m produced higher averaged rice grain yield, increased by 11.6% and 4.3% for rice cultivar LYP9, 10.5% and 7.6% for cultivar YY12, respectively, compared to the NPK and NPK+s treatments. In addition, sustainable yield index (SYI) was the highest for both rice cultivars in the NPK+m treatment. However, the relative rice grain yield (NPK+s/NPK) against time showed a significant (P < 0.05) downward trend for LYP9. Soil total organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the surface soil significantly increased by 10.5-17.6% when NPK applied along with cattle manure or rice straw over time. The NPK+m had significantly higher soil P, Ca, Fe, Cu, and Zn contents in both soil depths than the other fertilization practices. However, no differences in K contents were observed among fertilization treatments, which decreased by half compared with the initial value. The random forest model analysis showed that available P, K and soil acid phosphatase had greater impacts on rice grain yield than did the other parameters. Soil quality index (SQI) value calculated by the minimum data set method were the highest in the NPK+m. A significantly positive correlation between the SQI and SYI (y = 0.52x + 0.4, R2 = 0.4, P < 0.05), indicating that SQI was an important factor contribution to sustainable rice production. Conclusions: The NPK+m had more stable rice production and higher soil quality index than the NPK+s and NPK alone treatments. Significance: High and sustainable rice yields could be achieved by combined application of cattle manure and chemical fertilizers.

Abstract:Chemical and physical properties of soil,growth and development,yield and quality of rice in the field followed annual ryegrass,rye and wheat in agricultural zone in Yangtze River Basin were studied,in order to clarify the effects of different grain and forage crops on the subsequent rice production.The soil properties in ryegrass and rye field were improved.pH was lowered.Total N and available N,P,K were increased.PH was lowered and total N,available N,P were increased in wheat field,while available K was decreased.Thus,the growth of rice following ryegrass and rye was promoted.The panicles and yield of rice following rye and ryegrass were significantly higher than that following wheat.However,there were no significant differences on grains per panicle,grain weight and quality of rice.Therefore growing forages in the winter season could result in a soil improving effect,while providing a high yield of green forage,and will promote the combination with crop production and animal production,start a new ecological agricultural system which joins elements of soil,crop,forages and livestock together.
Effects of straw return with N fertilizer reduction on crop yield, plant diseases and pests and potential heavy metal risk in a Chinese rice paddy: A field study of 2 consecutive wheat-rice cycles

Abstract:<p>Understanding the comprehensive effect on crop production and quality, soil acidification, and Cd accumulation and distribution for wheat-rice rotation under N fertilization and continuous straw return is important for proper contaminated agricultural soil management. A 2-year paddy field experiment was conducted to study the effects of above factors change in the Zhejiang province, China. Fertilization treatments included: conventional N fertilizer application (N3), 20% reduction of N application (N2), 40% reduction of N application (N1), combined with three portions of straw incorporation: all straws retention (N3), half of the straws into the fields (S2), 20% straws retention (S1). The N1 treatments significantly decreased crop yields compared to N2 and N3 treatments. Except for C2-wheat, soil pH generally decreased with increasing N fertilizer input in the order of N1>N2>N3, regardless of how many straws was amended. Moreover, we found that straw addition plus N fertilization had a intersystem impacts on Cd accumulation, distribution and availability. Although total Cd had different trends among 4 experimental seasons, when the N reduced 20% applied, the DTPA-Cd contents were lowest among 3 out of four experimental seasons, except for that of C2-wheat, where N2 treatments ranked the second lower contents. For most seasons, Cd contents in straws were higher than soils and lowest in grains, and S2N2 treatment performed an intermediate value among all treatments. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that S2 or N2 treatments or S2N2 reduced the potential risk of plant diseases and pests with lower disease index, disease cluster rate. Notably, the relative outbreak of pests was remarkably suppressed under S2 treatments, especially S2N2. Thus, these findings demonstrates that in wheat-rice rotation reducing 20% N fertilization with 50% straw returning maybe a win-win practice in this region for the equilibrium between agricultural productivity, quality and low Cd polluted risk.</p>

Response of Rice Grain Yield and Soil Fertility to Fertilization Management under Three Rice-Based Cropping Systems in Reclaimed Soil

Abstract:Reasonable cropping systems and fertilizer management are vital for improving the quality of barren soil. The effectiveness of different crop rotation methods and fertilizers in soil improvement depends on various factors, including soil type, climate conditions, and crop type. In the present study, based on three rice-based cropping systems, the effects of organic fertilizers combined with slow-release fertilizers on rice yield and soil fertility in reclaimed soil were analyzed. The results showed that the rice grain yield was highest under the rice-fallow rotation system (RF) with the application of rapeseed meal fertilizer. Available nutrients such as AN, N_NH4+, TP, and AK showed a significant positive correlation with rice grain yield (p < 0.05). PCA and PERMANOVA analysis supported significant variation in CAZyme abundance among cropping systems (R2 = 0.60, p = 0.001) and significant differences between slow-release fertilizer treatments and organic fertilizer treatments (p < 0.05), but not among the three organic fertilizer treatments. Network analysis indicated positive stronger correlations among all functional enzymes in organic fertilizer treatments compared to chemical fertilizer treatments. RDA and correlation heat map results showed that C/N ratios and N_NH4+ were strongly related to CAZyme composition. PLS-PM analysis revealed that soil available nitrogen positively influenced several variables, while rice grain yield was negatively influenced by soil enzymes and TOC. These findings suggested that under appropriate cropping systems, partially substituting chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers can effectively enhance the availability of nutrients in the soil, alter the activity of carbon-cycling microorganisms, and increase rice grain yield.

Abstract:Fertilization can enhance crop yield and improve soil health. However, its effects on nutrient uptake, soil microbiota, and rice yield remain unclear. Herein, we designed a double-cropping system with different fertilization treatments to determine their contributions to paddy soil agroecosystem and rice yield. Soil samples were collected before planting the early rice, after harvesting early rice, and after harvesting the late rice. Soil physicochemical properties, and rice yield, and rice nutrient (total nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium contents) were determined. Variation of soil microbiota were also determined by high-throughput sequencing. We found that soil potassium content significantly improved during the planting process (P < 0.05), while rice phosphorus displayed significant variation under fertilization (P < 0.05). Notably, late rice yield was significantly higher than early rice yield (P < 0.001) after fertilization treatment. Furthermore, rice yield was positively correlated with available soil phosphorus (P < 0.05), indicating that fertilization promoted phosphorus uptake. Organic fertilizer altered the soil microbiota and increased Chloroflexi phyla abundance, while organic fertilizer combined with a compound microbial agent increased the diversity of soil microbial communities. A partial least squares path model revealed that fertilizer treatment directly positively affected rice yield by influencing phosphorus uptake and Shannon index (P < 0.01). Collectively, this study demonstrates that organic fertilization with compound microbial agents can stabilize soil nutrients, increase soil microbial diversity, and improve rice yield, thereby offering a guide for enhancing fertilizer utilization and improving agroecosystems.

Effect of various crop rotations on rice yield and nitrogen use efficiency in paddy–upland systems in southeastern China

Abstract:To evaluate the effects of various rotation systems on rice grain yield and N use efficiency, a paddy–upland cropping experiment (2013–2016) was conducted in southeastern China. The experiment was designed using six different rice––winter crop rotations: rice–fallow (RF), rice–wheat (RW), rice–potato with rice straw mulch (RP), rice–green manure (Chinese milk vetch; RC–G), rice–oilseed rape (RO), and rice–green manure crop (oilseed rape with fresh straw incorporated into soil at flowering; RO–G) and three N rates, N0 (0 kg N ha−1), N1 (142.5 kg N ha−1), and N2 (202.5 kg N ha−1). Average rice yields in the RF (5.93 t ha−1) rotation were significantly lower than those in the rotations with winter crops (7.20–7.48 t ha−1) under the N0 treatment, suggesting that incorporation of straw might be more effective for increasing soil N than winter fallow. The rice yield differences among the rotations varied by year with the N input. In general, the grain yields in the RP and RO–G rotations –were respectively 11.6–28.5% and 14.80–37.19% higher than those in the RF in plots with N applied. Increasing the N rate may have tended to minimize the average yield gap between the RF and the other rotations; the yield gaps were 18.55%, 4.14%, and 0.23% in N0, N1, and N2, respectively. However, the N recovery efficiency in the RF was significantly lower than that in other rotations, except for 2015 under both N1 and N2 rates, a finding that implies a large amount of chemical N loss. No significant differences in nitrogen agronomic efficiency (NAE) and physiological efficiency (NPE) were found between the rotations with legume (RC–G) and non–legume (RO and RW) winter crops, a result that may be due partly to straw incorporation. For this reason, we concluded that the return of straw could reduce differences in N use efficiency between rotations with and without legume crops. The degree of synchrony between the crop N demand and the N supply was evaluated by comparison of nitrogen balance degree (NBD) values. The NBD values in the RP and RW were significantly lower than those in the other rotations under both N1 and N2 rates. Thus, in view of the higher grain yield in the RP compared to the RW under the N1 rate, the RP rotation might be a promising practice with comparable grain yield and greater N use efficiency under reduced N input relative to the other rotations. The primary yield components of the RF and RP were identified as number of panicles m−2 and numbers of kernels panicle−1, respectively. The NAE and NPE were positively correlated with harvest index, possibly providing a useful indicator for evaluating N use efficiency.

Abstract:Summary Ensuring rice yield and grain safety quality are vital for human health. In this study, we developed two‐line hybrid rice (TLHR) with ultra‐low grain cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) accumulation by pyramiding novel alleles of OsNramp5 and OsLsi2. We first generated low Cd accumulation restorer (R) lines by editing OsNramp5, OsLCD, and OsLCT in japonica and indica. After confirming that OsNramp5 was most efficient in reducing Cd, we edited this gene in C815S, a genic male sterile line (GMSL), and screened it for alleles with low Cd accumulation. Next, we generated R and GMSL lines with low As accumulation by editing OsLsi2 in a series of YK17 and C815S lines. When cultivated in soils that were heavily polluted with Cd and As, the edited R, GMSL, and TLHR plants showed significantly reduced heavy metal accumulation, while maintaining a relatively stable yield potential. This study provides an effective scheme for the safe production of grains in As‐ and/or Cd‐polluted paddy fields.

Screening of low-Cd accumulating early rice cultivars coupled with phytoremediation and agro-production: Bioavailability and bioaccessibility tests

Abstract:Previous studies have focused on total cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice or its transformation in soil, but only a few have examined the entire soil-rice-human system. This study investigated the Cd bioaccessibility and bioavailability for humans from grains of early rice cultivars grown in a Cd-polluted field and further combined with multi-traits to discover and evaluate the optimum safe production and phytoremediation potential cultivars. The results revealed that Cd concentration in polished rice was <0.20 mg kg-1 in 79 % of early rice cultivars, implying that Cd levels in rice might be reduced by cultivar selection. Furthermore, the higher values of root to straw translocation factor indicates the maximal accumulation of Cd in straw and with highest soil to straw accumulation factor (>1.0) in 66.67 % of cultivars. However, bioaccessibility and bioavailability varied greatly among cultivars with corresponding values ranging from 5.68 to 7.67 % and 1.87 to 5.71 ng g-1, respectively. Despite the fact that polynomial fitting revealed a statistically significant relationship between Cd content in polished rice and bioavailable Cd in humans (R2 = 0.718, P = 0.025), poor goodness of fit for bioaccessibility, bioavailability, and toxicity varied even within low-Cd accumulating cultivars. As a result of multi trait analysis and bioavailability, Zhuliangyou4024 (ER-9), Lingliangyou211 (ER-3), and Yonxian15 (ER-28) were found to be the three best early rice cultivars with higher essential nutrients, less total and bioavailable Cd, and relative high phytoremediation potential and are suitable for healthy rice production and soil remediation.
Characteristics of Uptake of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium and Partitioning in Mechanical Transplanting Japonica Rice

Abstract:From 2008 to 2009, two more than 6.7 ha high-yield demonstration fields at Caoqiao (using cv. Wuxiangjing 9) and Qianhuang (using cv. Wuyunjing 7) in Wujin County, Jiangsu province, were used to investigate the nutrient uptake and parti-tionging characteristics of mechanical transplanting rice. The results showed that 80% of grain yield of mechanical transplanting rice came from the dry matter accumulation after heading, dry weight decreased in leaves while increased in stem sheath after heading. Leaves were also the main contributor of nitrogen translocation. Nitrogen uptake of mechanical transplanting rice in-creased with the yield, and the increased nitrogen uptake mainly originated from the nitrogen accumulation after heading. With the increasing yield, the accumulation and proportion of nitrogen from heading to maturity increased. At the same time, the uptake of P2O5 and K2O increased while the dry weight accumulation ratio reduced. The nitrogen harvest index was between 0.51 and 0.61, the P2O5 harvest index was about 0.75, and the K2O harvest index was close to 0.20. For achieving high yield in mechanical transplanting rice, nitrogen requirement for 100 kg grains should be 2.0–2.1 kg, and the optimum ratio of NPK should be 2.0 : 0.9 : 1.4.

Abstract:To alleviate the adverse consequences of conventional planting of the rice–wheat cropping system and achieve long-term sustainability, a 3-cycle experiment (2019–2022) was conducted to investigate the effects of six planting patterns (PPs) on the grain yield and environmental performance. PP1 entailed annual rotary tillage (RT) without straw returning but without fertilization for rice and wheat seasons. PP2 was the same as PP1 but involved fertilization. PP3 was the same as PP2 but included straw return. PP4 entailed rice planting the same as in PP3, but with innovative zero-tillage (ZT) seeding technology for wheat planting. PP5 entailed wheat planting the same as in PP4, but with rice planting involving direct paddy seeding under RT. PP6 entailed wheat planting the same as in PP4, but rice planting followed dry direct seeding under ZT. The results showed that the average total yield under PP2, PP3, PP4, PP5, and PP6 was 64 %, 54 %, 69 %, 51 %, and 54 % higher than that under PP1, respectively. The highest methane and nitrous oxide emissions occurred under PP4 and PP6, respectively. When soil organic carbon changes were included in the calculations, the carbon footprint per unit area (CF A ) was sharply reduced under PP4 and PP6, and the highest CF A was achieved under PP1, followed by PP2. Implementing annual RT promoted soil mineral nitrogen accumulation under PP2 and PP3 after wheat harvest, increasing the risk of mineral nitrogen leaching and the nitrogen footprint per unit area than that under the other PPs. PP4 exhibited the highest ammonia volatilization, which was offset by reduced mineral nitrogen leaching. Overall, PP4 exhibited a yearly increase in the comprehensive scores obtained via Z -score analysis and yielded the highest score in the last year due to the highest annual grain yield, steady SOC increase, and lower nitrogen loss.

Abstract:A major challenge in modern rice production is to achieve the dual goals of high yield and good quality with low environmental costs. This study was designed to determine whether optimized nitrogen (N) fertilization could fulfill these multiple goals. In two-year experiments, two high yielding 'super' rice cultivars were grown with different N fertilization management regimes, including zero N input, local farmers' practice (LFP) with heavy N inputs, and optimized N fertilization (ONF). In ONF, by reducing N input, increasing planting density, and optimizing the ratio of urea application at different stages, N use efficiency and the physicochemical and textural properties of milled rice were improved at higher yield levels. Compared with LFP, yield and partial factor productivity of applied N (PFP) under ONF were increased (on average) by 1.70 and 13.06%, respectively. ONF increased starch and amylose content, and significantly decreased protein content. The contents of the short chains of A chain (degree of polymerization (DP) 6–12) and B1 chain (DP 13–25) of amylopectin were significantly increased under ONF, which resulted in a decrease in the stability of rice starch crystals. ONF increased viscosity values and improved the thermodynamic properties of starch, which resulted in better eating and cooking quality of the rice. Thus, ONF could substantially compensate the negative effects caused by N fertilizer and achieve the multiple goals of higher grain quality and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) at high yield levels. These results will be useful for applications of high quality rice production at high yield levels.
