Abstract:Soil erosion is the problem for land resources and environmental protection that the whole world is concerned about.Chao Lake is the fifth largest freshwater lake in China,which is located in the eastern part of China,and was draw much attention for its water eutrophication and cyanobacterial bloom.Therefore,assessment of soil erosion in Chao Lake Basin is of great significance for environmental protection strategy and land planning policy.The Chao Lake Basin was taken as a case study area,GIS and USLE model was employed to evaluate the soil erosion in fourteen counties/districts in Chao Lake Basin from 2000 to 2010.The research showed that: ① soil erosion areas are mainly distributed in Hilly region of Jinan District,Shucheng County,Juchao District,as well as Hanshan County,namely the upstream region of Hangbu-Fengle River watershed,Yuxi River watershed and Zhegao River watershed in Chao Lake Basin;② From 2000 to 2010,the ratio of micro erosion,strength erosion,extreme intensity of erosion and severe soil erosion area in Chao Lake basin were reduced by 0.5%,0.05%,0.21% and 0.23%,and the ratio of mild erosion and moderate erosion area were increased by 0.98% and 0.01%,generally showing the trend of transfer from micro erosion,strength erosion,extreme intensity of erosion and severe soil erosion area to the light,micro degree erosion;③ the change of vegetation coverage is the main reason for the change of soil erosion classification,and the fluctuation of vegetation coverage showed a trend of decrease in soil erosion classification in the study area.

Abstract:Previous research has primarily focused on soil erosion issues in arid and semi-arid regions, with a limited understanding of soil erosion mechanisms in tropical areas. Additionally, there is a lack of a holistic perspective to determine the spatial attribution of soil erosion. The conversion of tropical rainforests into economically driven plantations, like rubber and pulpwood, has resulted in distinct soil erosion characteristics in specific regions. To enhance our knowledge of soil erosion patterns and mechanisms in tropical regions, it is necessary to examine soil erosion in the three major watersheds of Hainan Island from 1991 to 2021, which encompass significant geographical features such as tropical island water sources and tropical rainforest national parks. The study employed the China Soil Loss Equation (CSLE) model, slope trend analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, land-use transfer matrix, and spatial attribution analysis to examine soil erosion under different scenarios. The research results indicate that scenarios driven by the combination of natural and human factors have the greatest impact on soil erosion changes in the entire study area. Co-driven increases affected 53.56% of the area, while co-driven decreases affected 21.74%. The 31-year soil erosion showed an overall increasing trend. Human factors were identified as the primary drivers of increased soil erosion in the Nandu River basin, while a combination of climate and anthropogenic factors influenced the decrease in soil erosion. In the Changhua River basin, climate and human activities contributed to the soil erosion increase, while human activities primarily caused the decrease in soil erosion. In the Wanquan River basin, climate intensified soil erosion, whereas human activities mitigated it. This study underscores the significant combined impact of human activities and natural factors on soil erosion in tropical regions. It emphasizes the importance of considering human-induced factors when implementing soil erosion control measures in tropical regions.

Abstract:The northern region of loess plateau in China, where is cross water-wind erosion, is typical ecosystem environment fragile zone with serious soil erosion. The research on soil erosion prediction is very urgently. However, due to special geography of loess plateau, social and economic condition, the application of oversea prediction models is suffered to limit. We must develop a suite nation situation prediction model. For this, according to the purpose to predict soil erosion, we propose a soil erosion ecological prediction way. The Liudaogou small watershed, which is located in cross zone of water-wind erosion in the north of loess plateau in China, is taken as studying area. According to theprinciple of soil erosion, we select some main affecting factors as cartographic generalization objects. They respectively are landforms surface material composition, slope gradient and land utilization ways. On the based of cartographic generalization with GIS, according to combinatorics principles, the ecological landform unit is formed. In the Liudaogou small watershed, there are 83 kinds of ecological landform unit scattered in (284) plots. The soil erosion basically occurs on wasteland, slope land and sparse shrub land with the slope gradient of 15°~25°, and their areas sums up about 50% of whole watershed.
Remote Sensing Quantitative Research on Soil Erosion in the Upper Reaches of the Minjiang River

Abstract:The upper reaches of the Minjiang River are an important ecological barrier to the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and Chengdu Plain. They are also the water resources of Chengdu Plain. To protect the headwater ecosystems, it is necessary to carry out quantitative research on soil erosion in this area. This study mainly applies the USLE model to quantitatively evaluate the spatial distribution of ecosystem services on soil erosion and soil conservation. The evaluation is based on the following data: remote sensing image, meteorological radiation data, DEM, soil types, physical and chemical properties of the soil, vegetation types, and land use status. With advanced Earth observation technology, satellite remote sensing images about terrestrial vegetation and other evaluation parameters can be obtained in real time. The seasonal changes in vegetation coverage and the physical and chemical properties of soil have been fully considered. The results show that 1) the value of rainfall erosivity factor ( R ) is between 85.02 and 588.69 MJ•mm/(hm 2 •h•a), and its spatial distribution is consistent with that of annual average precipitation. 2) Soil erodibility factor ( K ) is between 0.12 and 0.30 (t hm 2 h) •(hm 2 MJ mm), showing zonal distribution, and is related to soil types. 3) Slope length and gradient factor ( LS ) range from 0.03 to 46.16. It is positively correlated with topographic relief. 4) Soil conservation measure factor ( P ) ranges from 0 to 1 and is determined by the land use and coverage. 5) Rainfall has a dominant impact on soil erosion, and the study area with violent and intense erosion reaches 17,302.17 km 2 , accounting for 69.81% of the total area. The soil conservation amount ( T ) in the study area is 283.45 million tons, and the ecosystem services are worth 434.48 million yuan. 6) RS and GIS techniques enable quick estimation. However, this assessment contains considerable uncertainty. It is still hard to reveal the physical process of soil erosion with empirical models.

Assessment of Soil Erosion by the RUSLE Model Using Remote Sensing and GIS: A Case Study of Jilin Province of China

Abstract:The accurate assessment and monitoring of soil erosion is of great significance for guiding food production and ensuring ecological security, and it is a current research hotspot. In this paper, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GISs) are combined with the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE model) to carry out research on soil erosion monitoring and make a quantitative evaluation. According to five factors, including rainfall erosivity, soil erodibility, topography, vegetation cover, crop management and water and soil conservation measures, the distribution of the soil erosion rate in Jilin Province in 2019 was mapped, and the soil erosion rate was divided into 5 levels according to the degree of erosion, including very slight, slight, moderate, severe and extremely severe erosion. Based on the segmented S-slope factor model and the unique topographical features of the study area, the relationships among the soil erosion rate, erosion risk level, erosion area, erosion amount and slope angle (θ) were systematically analysed, and a slope angle of 15° was identified as the threshold for soil erosion on sloped farmland in Jilin Province. The total soil erosion in Jilin Province was 402.14×106 t in 2019, the average soil erosion rate was 21.6 t·ha-1·a-1, and the average soil loss thickness was 1.6 mm·a-1; these values were far greater than the soil erosion rate risk threshold of 10 t ·Ha-1·a-1. Thus, the province has a strong level of soil erosion. We conclude that soil degradation is accelerating, and food production and the ecological environment will face severe challenges. It is suggested that soil erosion control should be carried out according to different types and slopes of land, with an emphasis on the management of forestland and farmland because forestland and farmland are currently the first types of land to be managed in Jilin Province. This paper aims to explore a timely, fast, efficient and convenient soil erosion monitoring and evaluation method and provide effective monitoring tools for agricultural water and soil conservation, ecological safety management and stable food production in Jilin Province and similar black soil areas.

Abstract:In current china, the research on comprehensive control of soil and water losses in small watershed using GIS is an important research direction in which soil erosion prediction provides significant foundation. Based on the softwares of ArcGIS 8.3 and Mapinfo 7.0 and combined with ecological principles, the objectives of this paper were to obtain erosion modulus by field rainfall experiments in various ecological terrain units, and to predict soil loss in the whole small watershed. According to watershed water concentration principle, combinatories principle, and weights analysis of environmental factors, which affect soil erosion of each ecological unit, we constructed the soil erosion prediction model. Then by performing rainfall simulation in Liudaogou small watershed, we simulated the model. The following results were found: (1) Soil water erosion mainly occurs on the wasteland and Sparse Shrub and grassland with the slope of 15 degrees similar to 25 degrees,and is not whole small watershed. On the slope sections of the severest soil water erosion, the soil erosion modulus are over 15000 t/km(2)a. On the others slope sections, the soil erosion modulus are much smaller (2) Under the same situation, the greater rainfall intensity is, the greater erosion modulus is;(3)On sandy slope, once producing runoff, the sediment concentration would be large, and the formation process of gully is vertical seepage-slope undercurrent-landslip.(4) The soil erosion ecological prediction model can reflect the spatial difference of soil water erosion more accurately. And it is more advantageous over RUSLE and WEEP in the Loess plateau with steep slope, small terrain plot and frequent rainstorm

Abstract:Soil and water conservation and protection are of great importance to China, as the source of the Pearl and Xiang Rivers, and the main rare earth mining area, the ecology of Dongjiang River Basin, is very fragile. In this paper, the Chinese soil loss equation and the Geodetector method are used to analyze the spatial and temporal patterns and the impact factors of soil erosion in this area from 2016 to 2020. The results show that (1) Soil erosion intensity in the Dongjiang River Basin from 2016 to 2020 is mainly mild, with the soil erosion intensity in the Dongjiang River Basin in 2016 being the largest in five years. (2) The erosion modulus shows an increasing trend with the increase of slope. In terms of vegetation, when the vegetation cover is 60%, the soil erosion modulus is the smallest, which effectively slows down the occurrence of soil erosion. Rainfall is proportional to the soil erosion modulus and soil erosion. (3) The results of Geodetector indicate that the single factor sizes are land use > vegetation > slope > precipitation, and interaction factors all show a nonlinear enhancement. (4) The proper allocation of land use types, the prohibition of steep slopes for cultivation, and the restoration of forestry can effectively prevent and control soil erosion in the area.

Abstract:The upper Minjiang catchment has suffered intensive soil erosion due to frequent geologic hazards and its fragile ecosystem zone with steep slopes. This study fully considers the topographic features and surface cover and introduces improved methods of K, LS, and C to establish a soil loss equation for the upper Minjiang catchment based on remote sensing and geographic information system. Spatial–temporal change patterns of soil erosion intensity and its driving mechanisms are then analyzed and discussed. Results show that (a) the soil erosion modulus of the upper Minjiang catchment for 2005 and 2015 were 1,577.29 t km−2 a−1 and 1,619.77 t km−2 a−1, both of which belong to a level of mild erosion. The slight and mild erosion zones covered the largest area and were widely distributed in the northern part of the study area, whereas zones of intensive and severe erosion were mostly concentrated in Wenchuan County and the lower reaches of the Heishui and Zagunao Rivers. (b) During 2005–2015, changes in erosion intensity showed a trend of “overall stability, local deterioration.” Zones of mild, moderate, and intensive increase were mainly concentrated in the Longmen Mountain Fault Zone, such as southern Maoxian and western Wenchuan Counties. (c) Returning cultivated land to forest and grasslands greatly reduced the erosion intensity and erosion amount, whereas geologic hazards aggravated the soil erosion condition. Zones with a slope of <35° had a positive relationship with soil erosion intensity; these areas are crucial control areas for soil preservation and containing soil loss. In addition, grassland is more effective in conserving soil and water than forestland in the upper Minjiang catchment in areas of steep terrain. These results provide an important reference for estimating soil loss intensity in southwest mountainous regions of China, particularly in the Hengduan Mountains, and greatly contribute to the planning of soil and water conservation.

Soil Erosion in Shenzhen City Based on GIS and RUSLE Model

Abstract:Soil erosion intensity of Shenzhen city was quantitatively assessed based on RUSLE model by applying GIS technology, and the distribution characteristics of soil erosion intensity for different slope grades, vegetation coverage, land use types and rainfall intensity were analyzed. The results showed that:(1)the mean soil erosion modulus of the study area in 2014 was 196.15t•km-2•a-1, the amount of soil erosion was 3.6×105t, with slight and moderate erosion category accounting for 12.65% and 0.91% of total area respectively, and intense and more severe erosion categories accounting for only 0.14%, in general, soil erosion in the study area belonged to the micro category and achieved apparent improvement compared to 1995; (2)the moderate and more severe erosion categories mainly lay in slope 15°~35°, the soil erosion modules averagely increased 344.0t•km-2 as the slope stepped up to the next level; (3)the amount of soil erosion in the areas in which the vegetation coverage lay between 30%~60% reached 62.7% with their area making up only 37.2%; (4)the mean soil erosion modulus of forestry, garden plot and unused land were highest, while forestry and garden plot were the main places to generate soil erosion; (5)soil erosion in the study area were significantly affected by the rainfall. Sediment transport amount and rainfall amount in corresponding area was highly correlated. River sediment transport caused by soil erosion mainly occurred in flood season (from April to September), which contributing more than 80% amount of sediment of the year. These results suggested that special attention should be paid to the prevention and control of soil erosion around the hilly areas especially in flood season. © 2018, The Editorial Board of Journal of Basic Science and Engineering. Abstract:Understanding soil erosion in the northeastern area of China with black soil is vital for protecting the natural environment and preserving food security. Although spatial and temporal studies of soil erosion have been conducted, further research is needed on the correlation between soil erosion and land use type changes. In this study, the soil erosion modulus is computed using RUSLE. The model that is most suitable to the research area was produced by contrasting three different approaches to estimating the rainfall erosion factor. The RUSLE based on the multi-year continuous high-density hourly average precipitation had the best performance of the bunch, with a MAPE of 15.49%, RMSPE of 7.99%, and R2 of 0.99. Based on this model, simulated soil erosion trends in the study region from 1980 to 2020 were examined, along with the link between soil erosion and land use change. The results showed that 40.47% of the overall erosion area is made up of cultivated land, and 97.83% of it is low erosion. The most severe soil erosion occurred on unused land, with moderate and above soil erosion occupying 48.93%. Since 2000, there has been an increase in the erosion of soil in the study region, which is primarily spatially represented in the rise in the soil erosion of forests in the central and northern mountainous areas. The study's findings serve as a guide for land planning and the development of sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:The Liudaogou small watershed,which is located at crisscross region of water and wind erosions in northern loess plateau of China,is taken as a study area.According to the principle of soil erosion,we selected some main affecting factors to generate the fundamental graphs.They are landforms surface material composition,soil types,slope gradient and land use ways respectively.Based on GIS platform,cartographic generalization were conducted and the ecological landform unit is formed.In the Liudaogou small watershed,there are 285 ecological landform units dvided into 83 kinds,in which only 16 kinds are more important.The erosion modules of different kind ecological landform units are analyzed and calculated.Through combination of erosion modules for kinds of ecological unit in whole watershed the soil water erosion modules for rainfall intensity of 2mm/min and 1.5 mm/min are simulated in the small watershed.The results show that the simulation method can predict soil's water erosion module of whole watershed under different rainfall intensities,reflect the spatial difference of soil water modules in the whole watershed.The most serious section of soil water erosion is the slope land,shrubbery and grassland with gradient of 15°~25° in the watershed,and is not the whole watershed.The predictive result can provide scientific basis for layout of soil and water conservation measures.
Modelling and Mapping Soil Erosion Potential in China

Abstract:Soil erosion is an important environmental threat in China. However, quantitative estimates of soil erosion in China have rarely been reported in the literature. In this study, soil loss potential in China was estimated by integrating satellite images, field samples, and ground observations based on the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE). The rainfall erosivity factor was estimated from merged rainfall data using Collocated CoKriging (ColCOK) and downscaled by geographically weighted regression (GWR). The Random Forest (RF) regression approach was used as a tool for understanding and predicting the relationship between the soil erodibility factor and a set of environment factors. Our results show that the average erosion rate in China is 1.44 t ha−1 yr−1. More than 60% of the territory in China is influenced by soil erosion limitedly, with an average potential erosion rate less than 0.1 t ha−1 yr−1. Other unused land and other forested woodlands showed the highest erosion risk. Our estimates are comparable to those of runoff plot studies. Our results provide a useful tool for soil loss assessments and ecological environment protections.

Abstract:Soil erosion is an important environmental problem in China. The hilly region of Jiangnan is characterized by severe soil erosion due to its unique climate and intensive human activities. Therefore, assessing soil erosion in this area is of great significance for achieving regional sustainable development. Based on the spatial zoning of natural resources and the spatial differences in precipitation, land cover, topographic features, and soil texture, we estimated soil erosion from 2000 to 2020 using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) model. The study showed that micro-erosion dominates spatially in the subtropical forest subzone of the eastern hills, accounting for more than 60% of the total erosion area. Intense erosion was found in woodlands and grasslands and the erosion intensity tended to be lower in the plains. Erosion occurred mainly in areas with slopes >8°. The areas with significantly lower erosion were mainly distributed at the boundaries between forests, arable land, and artificial land surfaces. The areas where soil erosion significantly increased over the study period were mainly found in farmland areas (31.70%). Soil erosion occurred because of a combination of factors, among which vegetation cover played a prominent role. Elevation and slope were correlated with soil erosion intensity. Severe erosion in different parts of the study area showed two trends of spatial aggregation and discrete distribution. This analysis of soil erosion in the study area by the RUSLE model provides reference data for the eastern subtropical forest subregion including the Jiangnan Hills.

Abstract:With the accelerated development of urbanization, the exploration and usage of land resources is becoming more and more frequent, which leads to the decline of soil quality, resulting in a series of soil ecological issues, such as soil nutrient loss, soil quality degradation and destruction. At present, the contradiction between soil erosion and sustainable development of human society has become one of the hot issues studied by scholars. The Yellow River Basin is an important experimental area for high-quality development in China, constructing the Yellow River Ecological Economic Belt play an important role in China's regional coordinated development. Although most of the affected area of the Lower Yellow River (AALYR) is in the plain, they have a large population density and are in the historical farming area. In latest years, because of the development and transformation of modern society, their ecological environment has become more fragile and soil erosion problems has become increasingly serious. Studying and analyzing soil erosion is of vital meaning for ecological protection and can provide scientific support for soil conservation work. Depending on the data of precipitation, soil properties, land use, population, etc., this paper studies and analyzes the soil erosion in AALYR from 2000 to 2020 through the RUSLE. We found that during the 20 years the proportion of very slight and slight grade area increased, and the distribution of moderate and above erosion grade was less, mainly in Zibo, Jinan, Anyang, Zhengzhou, and Tai 'an. Nearly three quarters of the regional soil erosion grade didn't change, apart from the increase of slight grade area, the other erosion grades area showed a downward trend. We take the city, county and town zoning analysis find that as the scale decreases, the area of serious erosion grades increases, and the distribution is gradually detailed. Land use is the main influencing factor of erosion except DEM. Forestland and grassland are larger of the soil erosion in various types of land use. Through these conclusions in this paper, it is promising to provide theoretical references for the ecological environment governance and high-quality and sustainable development of great river basins of the world and similar regions.

Abstract:Soil erosion is a major environmental problem in China. Planning for soil erosion control requires accurate soil erosion rate and spatial distribution information. The aim of this article is to present the methods and results of the national soil erosion survey of China completed in 2011. A multi-stage, unequal probability, systematic area sampling method was employed. A total of 32,948 sample units, which were either 0.2–3 km2 small catchments or 1 km2 grids, were investigated on site. Soil erosion rates were calculated with the Chinese Soil Loss Equation in 10 m by 10 m grids for each sample unit, along with the area of soil loss exceeding the soil loss tolerance and the proportion of area in excess of soil loss tolerance relative to the total land area of the sample units. Maps were created by using a spatial interpolation method at national, river basin, and provincial scales. Results showed that the calculated average soil erosion rate was 5 t ha−1 yr−1 in China, and was 18.2 t ha−1 yr−1 for sloped, cultivated cropland. Intensive soil erosion occurred on cropland, overgrazing grassland, and sparsely forested land. The proportions of soil loss tolerance exceedance areas of sample units were interpolated through the country in 250 m grids. The national average ratio was 13.5%, which represents the area of land in China that requires the implementation of soil conservation practices. These survey results and the maps provide the basic information for national conservation planning and policymaking.

Abstract:Soil erosion intensity continued to decrease from 1980s to 2020, and the contribution of LULC impacts ranged from 74%–195%. Predictions of land use subtypes indicated that LULC may be stable after 2020. The major driving factor of soil erosion changes may shift from LULC to precipitation after 2020. The variations in soil erosion significantly impact regional ecological security. Under rapid urbanisation, extensive ecological restoration and climate change, soil erosion development in the red soil region of southern China is ambiguous. Therefore, this study investigated the current (1980s–2020) and future (2050) erosion characteristics in a typical soil erosion control catchment (Changting section catchment) in this region by using the Cellular Automata Markov model and CMIP6 data to predict future scenarios and the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation to estimate soil erosion. The results showed significant changes in the vegetation coverage of major land uses from 1980s to 2020, which was mainly caused by continuous soil and water conservation (SWC). The land use subtypes that were obtained by reclassifying land use based on the threshold of vegetation cover on soil erosion control, reflect a continuous transformation from those with poor SWC effectiveness to those with great SWC effectiveness. Therefore, the estimated soil erosion intensity continued to decrease from 1980s to 2020, and the contribution of land use/land cover (LULC) impacts ranged from 74%–195%. However, predictions of land use subtypes indicated that LULC may be stable after 2020; thus, soil erosion changed little when the climate was almost unchanged in 2050. Under climate change scenarios, soil erosion may increase by 111%–121%, and the contribution of precipitation impacts was 63%–66%. The major driving factor of soil erosion changes may shift from LULC to precipitation after 2020. Therefore, in the future, the potential for reducing soil erosion by vegetation restoration may be limited, and more engineering measures should be applied to address the erosion risk caused by climate changes. This study provides prospects for land use/land cover and soil erosion in the red soil region of southern China.

Abstract:Calculating soil erosion intensity and predicting its change trend is essential for the precise implementation of control measures. We had estimated and quantitatively analyzed the current situation of soil erosion in the Daning River Basin in 2008, 2013, and 2018 using the revised universal soil loss equation model. We also analyzed the correlation between distance from the river, elevation, and slope, followed by the analysis and prediction of the soil erosion in the Daning River Basin in 2023 by constructing a cellular automaton (CA)-artificial neural network (ANN)-Markov model. The results demonstrated the total soil erosion to be 798.49, 746.38, and 628.78 10 4 t in 2008, 2013, and 2018, respectively. The overall trend of soil erosion was found to be decreasing and the spatial distribution of soil erosion was strongly correlated with the distance from the river, elevation, and slope. Based on the CA-ANN-Markov model prediction, the trend of soil erosion from 2018 to 2023 is consistent with that from 2008 to 2013. Light, moderate, and intense erosion demonstrated an increasing trend, whereas slight, very intense, and intense erosion demonstrated a decreasing trend. By estimating and predicting soil erosion in the Daning River Basin, this article provides a reference for ecological restoration and the control of soil erosion in small watersheds under similar environments.

Abstract:Soil erosion has become a major global environmental problem and is particularly acute on the Loess Plateau (LP), China. It is therefore highly important to control this process in order to improve ecosystems, protect ecological security, and maintain the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. We compared the effects of rainfall and land use (LU) patterns on soil erosion in different LP watersheds in this study in order to augment and improve soil erosion models. As most research on this theme has so far been focused on individual study areas, limited analyses of rainfall and LU patterns on soil erosion within different- scale watersheds has so far been performed, a discrepancy which might influence the simulation accuracies of soil erosion models. We therefore developed rainfall and LU pattern indices in this study using the soil erosion evaluation index as a reference and applied them to predict the extent of this process in different-scale watersheds, an approach which is likely to play a crucial role in enabling the comprehensive management of this phenomenon as well as the optimized design of LU patterns. The areas considered in this study included the Qingjian, Fenchuan, Yanhe, and Dali river watersheds. Results showed that the rainfall erosivity factor (R) tended to increase in these areas from 2006 to 2012, while the vegetation cover and management factor (C) tended to decrease. Results showed that as watershed area increased, the effect of rainfall pattern on soil erosion gradually decreased while patterns in LU trended in the opposite direction, as the relative proportion of woodland decreased and the different forms of steep slope vegetation cover became more homogenous. As watershed area increased, loose soil and craggy terrain properties led to additional gravitational erosion and enhanced the effects of both soil and topography.

Abstract:Soil erosion is simultaneously driven by multiple factors. Identifying the dominant controlling factors and quantifying the contribution of each factor would be helpful to sustain water and soil resources. China's Loess Plateau was taken as an example area to investigate the above issues since it is the most eroded region in the world, and its soil loss is being controlled by a large-scale revegetation program. We extended the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) to large-scale erosion estimation with the aid of GIS for the period of 1986–2015, analyzed the relationship between erosion and controlling factors by correlation and wavelet coherence analysis, and quantified the contribution of each factor to erosion change by the elasticity coefficient method. Results showed that the soil erosion decreased from 1013 t·km−2·a−1 in 1991–1995 to 595 t·km−2·a−1 in 2011–2015, with a downward trend in the whole period. Spatially, most areas had soil erosion of slight intensity, and the areas with high-intensity erosion concentrated in a northeast-southwest strip with hilly-gully landscapes or densely distributed rivers. The changes in surface conditions including vegetation cover and soil conservation measures had dominant effects on the spatial heterogeneity of erosion, their contribution to erosion reduction was 119%. But rainfall erosivity increased soil erosion, and it had a contribution to erosion reduction of −28%. These results are helpful in understanding the mechanism behind the changes in soil erosion and providing information for sustainable soil and water management and vegetation restoration.

Abstract:Soil erosion is one of the most serious land degradation problems and the primary environmental issue in the Loess Plateau region of China. To identify the critical sub-basins and assess the impacts of land use change and climatic variability change on soil loss, this study tested the feasibility of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model on sediment load simulation in the upper Sang-kan (USK) River basin. Based on a land use map of 1986, the SWAT model (Scenario 0) was calibrated at a monthly step using climate data from 1979 to 1985; then it was validated using climate data from 1986 to 1990. The monthly sediment simulation results indicated that the model did not work as well as streamflow simulation, indicating lower NS (Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency) and r2 values of 0.68, 0.69 and 0.61, 0.59 for the calibration period and validation period, respectively. This model could perform well under relatively low rainfall events, but it underestimated or overestimated the sediment load under high rainfall events. Comparing the results of scenarios with different land use maps (year of 1986 vs. 2012) and climate periods (1979–1990 vs. 2001–2012), it can be concluded that: (i) extreme and severe erosion almost always happened in FRST (forest land) and RNGE (grassland) in the hilly area; (ii) long-term traditional farming weakens the soil anti-erosion capability of land, leading to higher soil erosion, while forest can improve the soil structure, enhance the soil anti-erosion capability, and reduce soil erosion; (iii) both land use change and climatic change have led to the sediment yield decrease in the USK basin. Acting as the major influencing factor, land use change contributed to about 64.9% of the sediment yield reduction in the USK river basin.
