Abstract:Background: Iron deficiency is common in cardiovascular diseases (CVD), e.g., heart failure and coronary heart disease. Soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR) is a promising marker representing unmet cellular iron demands. However, whether higher serum sTfR is associated with increased risk of CVDs needs further investigation.Methods: In the present cross-sectional study, we analyzed data of 4,867 adult participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017–2018. Linear regression models were employed to identify possible correlations between sTfR and other characteristics. The association between sTfR and CVDs was assessed with univariable and multivariable logistics regression models.Results: The prevalence of CVDs was 9.5% among participants, and higher sTfR levels were found in participants with CVDs (p < 0.001). Linear regression models revealed positive associations between sTfR and age, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, glycated hemoglobulin A1c, and insulin resistance (all p < 0.001). In the multivariable logistics regression model, the adjusted odds ratio of sTfR for CVDs was 2.05 (per 1 log2 mg/L, 95% confidence interval: 1.03∼4.05, p = 0.046). Further subgroup analysis identified the associations of sTfR and CVDs were only significant in participants ≥60 years old, or with hypertension (all p < 0.05).Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that increased serum sTfR levels were associated with a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
Association between serum iron and gallstones in US adults: a cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Gallstones are a common digestive disorder that threatens human health. Iron deficiency may be related to the formation of gallstones, but there is limited current epidemiological research. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between iron status and gallstones. Methods: The datasets from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2020 were used in a cross-sectional investigation. Gallstones were determined by using the 2007-2010 NHANES questionnaire. Multivariate linear regression models were used to examine the association between serum iron, serum ferritin and iron intake with the risk for gallstones. Subgroup analysis based on gender, age, race, and diabetes were performed. Fitted smoothing curves were used to describe the linear relationship. Results: The research involved 7847 participants aged 20 and above, among whom 845 were identified as having gallstones. Participants with higher serum iron levels tended to have a lower gallstones prevalence. A negative relationship between serum iron and gallstones prevalence was observed (OR = 0.979, 95% CI:0.965-0.992). The group with the highest serum iron tertile had a 23.7% lower risk of gallstones compared to the lowest tertile (OR = 0.763, 95% CI:0.628‒0.929). Gallstone prevalence was inversely correlated with iron intake in model 1. The negative association between serum iron and gallstones remained stable in stratifications, including gender, age, race, and diabetes. Conclusions: Elevated serum iron was associated with a decreased prevalence of gallstones. However, to confirm the impact of long-term iron metabolism on gallstone formation, additional prospective research is necessary.
Sex‐specific Associations of Dietary Iron Intake with Incident Dementia: A Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract:AbstractBackgroundIron has been associated with age‐related cognitive decline and dementia in middle aged and older adults. Nevertheless, as the major source of iron in the body, whether dietary iron intake is related to incident dementia remains poorly understood.MethodA total of 191,694 dementia‐free participants (55.0% female; mean±SD age, 56.2 ± 7.9 years) from the UK Biobank who completed at least one 24h dietary recall at study baseline (2009‐2012) were followed to 2021 (mean = 9.5 years). Dietary iron intake was calculated using the 24h dietary recalls. Incident dementia was identified through hospital admissions and death registries. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the overall and sex‐specific associations of dietary iron intake with incident dementia. Participants with iron intake between the 20th and 80th percentiles were considered as reference group.ResultDuring a total of 1,813,480 person‐years, a total of 918 (650 women and 268 men) participants developed dementia. When adjusted for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and other dietary factors, participants in the lowest quintile of iron intake were at significantly higher dementia risk (hazard ratios [HR], 1.40, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10‐1.78), while the highest quintile was not significantly related to incident dementia (HR, 1.22, 95% CI, 0.97‐1.55). We detected a significant sex difference in the relations of dietary iron intake to dementia (P‐interaction < 0.001). We observed a U‐shaped association between dietary iron intake and incident dementia in male participants (HRlow, 1.50, 95% CI, 1.09‐2.07; HRhigh, 1.40, 95% CI, 1.03‐1.91; P‐nonlinearity<0.001). Nevertheless, no significant correlation was seen in women, regardless of their menopause status.ConclusionOur study findings suggested a U‐curve relationship between dietary iron intake and risk of dementia among males, which may be related to the differences in direct iron metabolism between the sexes. Further research is warranted to confirm the findings and to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the observed gender differences.
Association Between Body Iron Status and Cognitive Task Performance in a Nationally Representative Sample of Older Adults.

Abstract:Iron is an essential micronutrient that is necessary for proper cognitive function. However, the dose-response relationship between body iron status and cognitive function remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the association between serum ferritin concentrations, an indicator of body iron status, and cognitive function in older adults. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 -2002 in the United States, nationally representative data was collected from 2,567 adults aged 60 years and older who had objectively measured serum ferritin levels and cognitive performance. High ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level >200 ng/mL in women and >300 ng/mL in men. Low ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level <30 ng/mL. The digit symbol substitution test (DSST) was employed to assess cognitive function. Multivariable logistic regression analyses with survey weights were performed after the DSST was dichotomized at the median score. The weighted prevalence of adults with normal, low, and high serum ferritin levels were 73.98%, 9.12%, and 16.91%, respectively. A U-shaped association between serum ferritin concentrations and cognitive task performance was observed. After adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and C-reactive protein factors, the odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) for lower cognitive performance was 1.39 (1.11, 1.74) in adults with high ferritin levels and 1.38 (0.86, 2.22) in adults with low ferritin levels, compared with those with normal ferritin levels. The association between serum ferritin levels and lower cognitive performance was stronger in adults aged 60 to 69 years old than those aged 70 years and older. In conclusion, in a nationally representative sample of older adults in the United States, a high serum ferritin level was significantly associated with worse cognitive task performance. Thus, the relationship between low serum ferritin concentrations and cognitive task performance warrants further investigation.
Association Between Serum Iron Status and Muscle Mass in Adults: Results From NHANES 2015-2018

Abstract:Background: Iron deficiency or overload may contribute to complications associated with diseases, but the link between iron status and skeletal muscle disorder is poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum iron status, reflected by serum ferritin concentration, and muscle mass in U.S. adults. Methods: We utilized data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2018 for analysis. Data on serum ferritin, appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM), body mass index (BMI) and confounding factors were extracted and analyzed. Multivariate linear regression analyses and smooth curve fittings were employed to investigate the association between serum ferritin and muscle mass. Subgroup analysis based on iron status, age, gender and race were performed. Results: A total of 2,078 participants were included, and divided into iron deficiency (n = 225), normal iron status (n = 1,366), and iron overload (n = 487) groups. Participants with iron overload had significantly lower ASM and appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI) (ASM: 19.329 ± 4.879, ASMI: 0.709 ± 0.138) compared to those with iron deficiency (ASM: 22.660 ± 6.789, ASMI: 0.803 ± 0.206) and normal iron status (ASM: 22.235 ± 6.167, ASMI: 0.807 ± 0.201). The serum ferritin was negatively linked with muscle mass after adjusting for potential confounders (β = -0.0001, 95% CI: -0.0001, -0.0000). When stratified by iron status, the trend test between them remained significant (P for trend: 0.008). Furthermore, subgroup analysis identified a stronger association in men (β = -0.0001, 95% CI: -0.0002, -0.0001), age ≥ 40 years (β = -0.0001, 95% CI: -0.0002, -0.0000), non-Hispanic black (β = -0.0002, 95% CI: -0.0003, -0.0001) and other races (β = -0.0002, 95% CI: -0.0003, -0.0000). Conclusions: Our study revealed an inverse relationship between serum iron status and muscle mass in adults. This finding improves our understanding of the impact of serum iron status on muscle mass, and sheds new light on the prevention and treatment of muscle loss.
Associations of iron metabolism and inflammation with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in a large NHANES community sample: Moderating and mediating effects

Abstract:Background and aims: This study aimed to assess the associations between serum iron concentration, C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration and the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality in the general population and to explore potential mediating and moderating effects. Methods and results: This study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey spanning the years 1999-2010, encompassing 23,634 participants. Cox proportional hazards regression models were employed to investigate the independent associations of serum iron and CRP with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Moderation and mediation analyses explored the moderating effect of CRP on the association between the serum iron concentration and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, and the mediating role of the serum iron concentration in the association between the CRP concentration and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. After multivariate adjustments in the Cox model, serum iron and CRP levels were independently correlated with both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality risk. Moderation analyses revealed a more pronounced correlation between the serum iron concentration and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in participants with higher CRP levels. Mediation analysis indicated that the serum iron concentration partly mediated the impact of CRP on the risk of all-cause mortality (13.79%) and cardiovascular mortality (24.12%). Conclusion: Serum iron and CRP are independently associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Moreover, the associations between serum iron concentrations and both all-cause and cardiovascular mortality are more pronounced in individuals with elevated CRP. Serum iron partially mediates the effect of CRP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
The prevalence and associated mortality of non‐anaemic iron deficiency in older adults: a 14 years observational cohort study

Abstract:<p>Iron is central to multiple biological pathways, and treatment of non‐anaemic absolute iron deficiency (NAID) is beneficial in certain conditions. However, it is unknown if NAID is associated with increased mortality in older adults. A nationally representative sample of 4451 older adults from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing was used. NAID was defined as serum ferritin < 30 μg/l and haemoglobin ≥ 120 g/l (women) or ≥ 130 g/l (men). Cumulative mortality was estimated by Kaplan–Meier method. Unadjusted and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of mortality were calculated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Baseline NAID prevalence was 8·8% (95% confidence interval [CI] 8·0–9·7%); 10·9% (95% CI 9·7–12·3%) for women and 6·35% for men (95% CI 5·3–7·5%). The HR for mortality for individuals with NAID compared with non‐anaemic individuals without iron deficiency over the 14‐year follow‐up was 1·58 (95% CI 1·29–1·93). This association was independent of all identified demographic, health‐related and biological covariates, and robust in multiple sensitivity analyses. In older adults in England, NAID is common and associated with an increased mortality rate compared to non‐anaemic individuals with normal serum ferritin. The association is principally driven by an excess mortality in women.</p>

Decreased Iron Ion Concentrations in the Peripheral Blood Correlate with Coronary Atherosclerosis

Abstract:(1) Background: Obesity and diabetes continue to reach epidemic levels in the population with major health impacts that include a significantly increased risk of coronary atherosclerosis. The imbalance of trace elements in the body caused by nutritional factors can lead to the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. (2) Methods: We measured the concentrations of sodium (Na), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), Zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) in peripheral blood samples from 4243 patients and performed baseline analysis and propensity matching of the patient datasets. The patients were grouped into acute myocardial infarction (AMI, 702 patients) and stable coronary heart disease (SCAD1, 253 patients) groups. Both of these groups were included in the AS that had a total of 1955 patients. The control group consisted of 2288 patients. The plasma concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and iron were measured using a colorimetric method. For comparison, 15 external quality assessment (EQA) samples were selected from the Clinical Laboratory Center of the Ministry of Health of China. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis. The average values and deviations of all of the indicators in each group were calculated, and a p-value threshold of <0.05 was used to indicate statistical significance. (3) Results: The iron ion concentrations of the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) group were significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.05, AUC = 0.724, AUC = 0.702), irrespective of tendency matching. Compared to the data from the stable coronary artery disease (SCAD) group, the concentration of iron ions in the acute myocardial infarction group was significantly lower (p < 0.05, AUC = 0.710, AUC = 0.682). Furthermore, the iron ion concentrations in the (AMI + SCAD) group were significantly lower (p < 0.05) than in the control group. (4) Conclusions: The data presented in this study strongly indicate that the concentration of iron ions in the peripheral blood is related to coronary atherosclerosis. Decreases in the levels of iron ions in the peripheral blood can be used as a predictive biomarker of coronary atherosclerosis.

SERUM CALCIUM WAS NEGATIVELY ASSOCIATED WITH SERUM IRON AMONG GENERAL POPULATION: FINDINGS FROM A CROSS-SECTION STUDY

Abstract:Introduction: The progression of ferroptosis has been found to be associated with the onset and progression of many diseases. Disruption of iron homeostasis can lead to ferroptosis. We had previously hypothesized that vitamin D may affect serum calcium levels, which in turn regulates ferroptosis by regulating serum iron levels. However, the relationship between serum calcium level and serum iron level is unclear. The purpose of our study was to explore the relationship between serum calcium level and serum iron level among general population in Taizhou, China. Methods: In this study, a cross-sectional study was conducted. Serum calcium levels and serum iron levels were determined in our work. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the association between serum calcium level and serum iron level. Results: The results showed that serum iron level was negatively correlated with serum calcium level and age. After controlling for age, sex and marital status, serum iron level was still negatively correlated with serum calcium level. Conclusions: The results suggest that improving serum calcium levels may be a potential strategy for regulating iron metabolism homeostasis. Whether calcium supplementation can reduce serum iron levels in people with low serum calcium levels needs further investigation.
Iron status correlates strongly to Insulin Resistance among U.S. adults: A nationwide population-base study

Abstract:Background: Evidence on the link between iron status markers and insulin resistance (IR) is limited. We aimed to explore the relationship between iron status and IR among U.S. adults. Methods: This study involved 2993 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2006, 2017-2020. IR is characterized by a HOMA-IR value of ≥2.5. Weighted linear and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to examine the linear relationships between iron status and IR. Furthermore, restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to identify the non-linear dose-response associations. Stratified analyses by age, sex, BMI and PA were also performed. Last, ROC curve was used to evaluate the predictive value of iron status in IR. Results: In weighted linear analyses, serum iron (SI) exhibited a negative correlation with HOMA-IR (β (95% CI) = -0.03(-0.05, -0.01), P = 0.01). In weighted multivariate logistic analyses, iron intake and serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) were positively correlated with IR (OR =1.02; 95% CI=1.00-1.04, P = 0.04; OR =1.07; 95% CI=1.02-1.13, P = 0.01). Also, SI and transferrin saturation (TSAT) were negatively correlated with IR (OR =0.96; 95% CI=0.94-0.98, P <0.0001; OR =0.98; 95% CI=0.97-0.99, P <0.001) after adjusting for confounding factors. RCS depicted a nonlinear dose-response relationship between sTfR and TSAT and IR. This correlation remained consistent across various population subgroups. ROC curve showed that TSAT performed better than iron intake, SI, sTfR and TSAT in ROC analyses for IR prediction. Conclusion: All biomarkers demonstrated significantly lower risk of IR with increasing iron levels, which will contribute to a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the relationship between the two and provide a solid foundation for future exploration of the mechanisms underlying their relationship.

Abstract:DNA was extracted and purified from 55 dermatophyte isolates representing 34 species of Trichophyton, Microsporum and Epidermophyton. The base compositions of the chromosomal DNA were determined by CsCl density gradient centrifugation and were found to be in the narrow range of 48.7 to 50.3 mol % G + C. A satellite DNA component assumed to be of mitochondrial origin was present in most strains, with a G + C content ranging from 14.7 to 30.8 mol % G + C. Heterogeneity in microscopic and colonial characteristics was not reflected in differences in the mean G + C content of the chromosomal DNAs. Strains varied in the G + C contents of satelite DNA, but these did not correlate with traditional species concepts.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to investigate the potential associations between serum iron levels, dietary iron intake, and iron supplementation, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents A cross-sectional analysis was conducted, utilizing data from adolescents participating in the 2003–2018 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) pertaining to serum iron, dietary iron, and iron supplementation were derived through multivariate logistic regression models. Additionally, a restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression model was applied to explore the nonlinear relationship between dietary iron and serum iron concerning MetS. The study encompassed 4858 American adolescents aged 12 to 19, among whom 413 (8.5%) manifested MetS. The study cohort exhibited an average age of 15.52 years, comprising 2551 males (52.51%) and 2307 females (47.49%). Relative to individuals in the lowest serum iron quartile, those in the highest quartile for serum iron (OR = 0.33, 95% CI 0.21–0.50), the highest quartile for dietary iron (OR = 0.53, 95% CI 0.32–0.89), and those utilizing iron supplements (OR = 0.61, 95% CI 0.37–0.99) evinced a diminished prevalence of MetS, even post adjustment for potential confounding variables. A non-linear relationship was discerned between serum iron and MetS, exhibiting a statistically significant negative correlation when serum iron concentrations exceeded the inflection point (serum iron = 8.66 µmol/L, P for nonlinear < 0.001). This investigation reveals that higher levels of serum iron, increased dietary iron intake, and the use of iron supplements are linked to a lower prevalence of MetS in US adolescents. These findings suggest that dietary modifications could play a role in promoting the health of adolescents.

Relationship between Serum Ferritin Level and Dyslipidemia in US Adults Based on Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys 2017 to 2020

Abstract:Previous research has suggested that high serum ferritin (SF) levels may be associated with dyslipidemia. This study investigated the association between SF levels and dyslipidemia in American adults, which held relevance for both clinical and public health areas concerned with screening and prevention. Data from the pre-pandemic National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), conducted between 2017 and 2020, were utilized for this analysis. Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the correlation between lipid and SF concentrations, and the connection between SF and the four types of dyslipidemia was further assessed by using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Odds ratios (ORs; 95% CI) for dyslipidemia were calculated for quartiles of SF concentrations, with the lowest ferritin quartile as the reference. The final subjects consisted of 2676 participants (1290 males and 1386 females). ORs for dyslipidemia were the highest in the fourth quartile (Q4) of SF both in males (OR: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.12–2.28) and females (OR: 1.52, 95% CI: 1.07–2.17). The crude ORs (95% CI) for the risk of High TC and High LDL-C increased progressively in both genders. However, after adjusting for covariates, the trend of significance was only present in females. Finally, the association between total daily iron intake and the four types of dyslipidemia was examined, revealing that the risk of High TG in the third quartile of the total daily iron intake was 2.16 times greater in females (adjusted OR: 3.16, 95% CI: 1.38–7.23). SF concentrations were remarkably associated with dyslipidemia. In females, daily dietary iron intake was associated with High-TG dyslipidemia.

Abstract:Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a widely prevalent hepatic disorder resulting in a high risk of adverse prognosis, and its presence has been considered a cause or an outcome of metabolic syndrome. But the relative factors and mechanism of NAFLD are still unclear. The aim of this study is to explore the association between iron status indicators and NAFLD as well as liver fibrosis. Methods: This study evaluated whether serum iron status indicators are independently related to the risk of NAFLD. The independent variable was each one of the iron status indicators (iron intake, ferritin, iron, unsaturated iron binding force (UIBC), total iron binding capacity (TIBC), transferrin saturation, transferrin receptor, hemoglobin, and mean cell hemoglobin), and the dependent variables were NAFLD and advanced liver fibrosis. A multivariable logistic regression analysis and subgroup analysis were performed to evaluate the association between iron status indicators and NAFLD as well as liver fibrosis. Results: A total of 3727 patients were included. After adjusting for other covariates in multiple logistic regression models, the serum ferritin, UIBC, TIBC, and hemoglobin had a significant positive association with the NAFLD (odds ratio [OR] = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.09, 1.23; 1.31, 95% CI: 1.06, 1.62; 1.82, 95% CI: 1.23, 2.67; 2.67, 95% CI: 1.48, 4.82, separately), and the risk of NAFLD diagnosed by VCTE or ALT/AST further increased in the fourth quartile group of serum ferritin (diagnosed by VCTE OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.49, 2.50; diagnosed by ALT/AST OR = 5.76, 95% CI: 3.96, 8.38). Moreover, the main positive correlation between serum ferritin and NAFLD was found in females, participants aged >41 years, with no diabetes. Conclusion: Our results indicated that iron status indicators were closely associated with the occurrence of advanced liver fibrosis, which may indicate that iron status indicators could be potential biomarkers of NAFLD and advanced liver fibrosis.
Iron metabolism biomarkers and mortality risk in U.S. patients with congestive heart failure: NHANES 1999-2018 analysis

Abstract:Background and aims: Iron deficiency is a major public health concern. We aimed to assess the predictive capability of 4 iron metabolism biomarkers for all-cause and cardiovascular disease-specific mortality in U.S. patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Methods and results: 1904 CHF patients aged ≥20 years were enrolled from NHANES, 1999-2000 to 2017-2018. All analyses were weighted to provide nationally representative estimates. Among 1905 CHF patients, mean age was 71 years, and 1024 (53.8%), 459 (24.1%), 206 (10.8%), and 216 (11.3%) were Non-Hispanic Black, Non-Hispanic White, Hispanic-Mexican American, and Hispanic-Other Hispanic, respectively. During follow-ups, 1080 deaths occurred. Median follow-up time was 5.08 years. Per-unit increase in natural-logarithmic-transformed iron and transferrin saturation decreased all-cause mortality risk separately by 33.0% (adjusted hazard ratio: 0.670, 95% confidence interval: 0.563 to 0.797, P < 0.001) and 32.6% (0.674, 0.495 to 0.917, 0.013), and per-unit increase in transferrin receptor increased mortality risk by 33.7% (1.337, 1.104 to 1.618, 0.004). Two derivates from 3 significant iron biomarkers were generated - transferrin receptor to natural-logarithmic-transformed iron ratio (TRI) and transferrin receptor to natural-logarithmic-transformed transferrin saturation ratio (TRTS), which were significantly associated with all-cause mortality, with per-unit increase corresponding to 2.692- and 1.655-fold increased all-cause mortality risk (P: 0.003 and 0.023). Only iron and TRTS were associated with the significant risk of cardiovascular disease-specific mortality (P: 0.004 and 0.017). Conclusions: Our findings identified 3 iron metabolism biomarkers that were individually, significantly, and independently associated with all-cause mortality in patients with CHF, and importantly 2 derivates generated exhibited stronger predictive capability.
Higher serum ferritins are associated with higher blood pressure: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the association between serum ferritin and hypertension among American adults from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2018. A total of 16,125 participants were included. Weighted logistic regression and subgroup analyses were performed to explore the association. We found that serum ferritin was closely correlated to hypertension. Individuals with high serum ferritin were more likely to have higher systolic or diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBP) than those with lower serum ferritin. Restricted cubic spline showed a significant non-linear association between serum ferritin and SBP/DBP. Higher level of serum ferritin (Q3 74.1–147 μg/L and Q4 > 147 μg/L) was found to have positive association with high SBP [Q3 (OR: 1.246, 95% CI:1.020–1.523), Q4 (OR: 1.354, 95% CI:1.096–1.674)], and hypertension [Q3 (OR: 1.283, 95% CI:1.099–1.499), Q4 (OR: 1.424, 95% CI:1.197–1.63)] in the whole population. In people aged between 20 and 60, subjects with high serum ferritin were significantly associated with a higher risk of hypertension, but in those over 60, the relationship between serum ferritin level and hypertension is negative. A non-linear association between serum ferritin and SBP, as well as DBP, was discovered. There was age difference in association between serum ferritin and hypertension in American adults, and further researches were needed to understand the mechanisms behind the difference.

Abstract:Background Excess iron levels can induce oxidative stress and could therefore affect telomere attrition. However, little is known about the impact of body iron status on telomere length. Objective Our aim was to examine the association between serum ferritin concentrations, an indicator of body iron status, and leukocyte telomere length in US adults. Design We conducted a nationwide, population-based, cross-sectional study. Participants/setting We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2002. We included 7,336 adults aged 20 years or older who had available data on serum ferritin levels and telomere length. High ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level >200 ng/mL (449.4 pmol/L) in women and >300 ng/mL (674.1 pmol/L) in men. Low ferritin levels were defined as a serum ferritin level <30 ng/mL (67.4 pmol/L). Main outcome measures Leukocyte telomere length was assayed using the quantitative polymerase chain reaction method. Statistical analyses Linear regression with survey weights was performed to estimate the association between serum ferritin levels and telomere length. Results The prevalence of adults with high and low serum ferritin levels was 10.9% and 17.6%, respectively. High ferritin levels were inversely associated with telomere length compared to normal ferritin levels. After adjustment for demographic, socioeconomic and lifestyle factors, body mass index, C-reactive protein, and leukocyte cell type composition, the beta coefficient for log-transformed telomere length was -0.020 (standard error [SE]=0.009; P=0.047). The association was stronger in adults aged 65 years or older (beta coefficient -0.081, SE-0.017; P<0.001) than in adults 20 to 44 years old (beta coefficient -0.023, SE-0.019; P=0.24) or adults aged 45 to 64 years old (beta coefficient 0.024, SE-0.015; P=0.10) (beta for interaction 0.003). Low ferritin levels were not significantly associated with telomere length compared with normal ferritin levels. Conclusions In a US nationally representative population, high body iron status was associated with shorter telomeres, especially in adults aged 65 years or older.

Abstract:Background: Several studies have shown that serum copper levels are related to coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. However, the association of serum copper levels with all-cause, cause-specific [including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer] mortality remains unclear. Objectives: This study aimed to prospectively examine the association of copper exposure with all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality among US adults. Methods: The data for this analysis was obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2011 and 2014. Mortality from all-causes, CVD, and cancer mortality was linked to US National Death Index mortality data. Cox regression models were used to estimate the association between serum copper levels and all-cause, CVD, and cancer mortality. Results: A total of 2,863 adults were included in the main study. During the mean follow-up time of 81.2 months, 236 deaths were documented, including 68 deaths from cardiovascular disease and 57 deaths from cancer. The weighted mean overall serum copper levels was 117.2 ug/L. After adjusting for all of the covariates, compared with participants with low (1st tertile, <103 μg/L)/medium (2st tertile, 103–124 μg/L) serum copper levels, participants with high serum copper levels (3rd tertile, ≥124 μg/L) had a 1.75-fold (95% CI, 1.05–2.92)/1.78-fold (1.19,2.69) increase in all-cause mortality, a 2.35-fold (95% CI, 1.04–5.31)/3.84-fold (2.09,7.05) increase in CVD mortality and a 0.97-fold (95% CI, 0.28–3.29)/0.86-fold (0.34,2.13) increase in cancer mortality. In addition, there was a linear dose-response association between serum copper concentration with all-cause and CVD mortality ( P for nonlinear > 0.05). Conclusions: This prospective study found that serum copper concentrations were linearly associated with all-cause and CVD mortality in US adults. High serum copper levels is a risk factor for all-cause and CVD mortality.

Abstract:The dental status of 50 patients undergoing total hip replacement (THR) was evaluated. Fourteen of the patients had no teeth. The teeth of the remaining 36 patients were in poor condition. Decay was severe in 12. Periapical infectious foci were evident in the panoramic radiographs of 24 patients. Nearly all of the 36 patients with teeth had advanced periodontal disease, as evidenced by horizontal and vertical destruction of alveolar bone. Thirty-four of the 36 dentate patients were considered to be at risk of bacteraemia because of their dental condition. The study shows the value of preoperative dental examination and treatment of patients undergoing THR. It is not clear if prophylatic antibiotic treatment is needed when patients who have undergone THR receive dental treatment.
