Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the acaricidal potential of the essential oils of Cananga odorata L. (ylang-ylang), Illicium verum (star anise), and Foeniculum vulgare (sweet fennel) in Rhipicephalus microplus engorged females. The essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation, and the females were immersed in each essential oil at concentrations ranging from 10 μL/mL to 50 μL/mL, using 10% dimethyl sulfoxide as a solvent. Tick mortality was evaluated after seven and 14 days, and the following parameters were determined: female weight before oviposition, preoviposition period, egg mass weight, egg production index, incubation period, hatching rate, fecundity, percentage of reduction in oviposition, percentage of reduction in hatching and product efficacy. Lethal concentration (LC50) values were 34.42 μL/mL (28.34-40.86) for C. odorata and 40.60 μL/mL (32.58-58.21) for F. vulgare. This parameter was not calculated for I. verum because there was insufficient mortality at the concentrations evaluated. The greatest efficacy was observed in the group treated with 40 μL/mL F. vulgare essential oil (97.17%), followed by I. verum (91.35%) and C. odorata (86.19%) at the same concentration. Efficacy results were associated with a greater reduction in egg mass weight and lower hatching rates. Although the essential oils caused a slight acaricidal impact, they showed significant effects on the reproductive performance of R. microplus engorged females. Thus, the results of this study indicate that these essential oils can be used in the development of new acaricidal formulations.
Acaricidal potential of essential oils on Rhipicephalus linnaei: Alternatives and prospects

Abstract:The acaricidal potential of various essential oils (EOs) has been evaluated based on their benefits in tick control. This study aimed to investigate the tick-killing activity of Pogostemon cablin "patchouli," Cymbopogon martinii "palmarosa," and Cymbopogon flexuosus "lemongrass" EOs on Rhipicephalus linnaei. Engorged females were collected from domiciled and non-domiciled dogs from Jataí city, Goiás state, to obtain larvae and nymphs in a controlled environment. Two commercial EOs brands were used in this study in different EOs concentrations (2.5, 5, 10, and 20 mg/mL), and was tested by immersion of larvae and nymphs. In the in vitro evaluation of EOs toxicity against R. linnaei larvae, 100 % mortality was achieved with 10 mg/mL of P. cablin oil, whereas mortality rates greater than 98 % were observed with 20 mg/mL of C. martinii and C. flexuosus. In nymphs, high sensitivity was observed, with 100 % mortality achieved using 5 mg/mL of P. cablin and 20 mg/mL of C. martinii and C. flexuosus. The EO of P. cablin "patchouli" demonstrated in vitro toxicity at a lower concentration than the other oils in the two development stages of R. linnaei, and was considered the most efficient and with verified acaricidal activity. Oils of C. martinii "palmarosa" and C. flexuosus "lemongrass" achieved mortality greater than 95 % in larvae and nymphs only at the highest concentration. Therefore, the acaricidal effects of the tested EOs are promising, especially of patchouli oil, which promoted high mortality at a low concentration (LC90 of 2.21 mg/mL).
The contact toxicity and toxic mechanism of essential oils from Pimenta racemosa and Eugenia caryophyllata against Haemaphysalis longicornis (Acari: Ixodidae)

Abstract:Haemaphysalis longicornis, which is widely distributed in China, can transmit various tick-borne diseases such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome, babesiosis, rickettsia disease and so on, and do great harm to human health and the development of animal husbandry. Chemical acaricides are the most traditional tick control method, but because of its many shortcomings, there is an urgent need to find a substitute with high efficiency, environmental protection and low toxicity. It has been found that some plant essential oils (EOs) have good insecticidal activity and environmental safety. In this study, the components of EOs from Pimenta racemosa and Eugenia caryophyllata were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and their potential for application in the control of Haemaphysalis longicornis were studied. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed that the main components of P. racemosa EO were eugenol (64.07%), those of E. caryophyllata EO were Hexadecanoic acid, 2-methylpropyl ester (51.84%) and eugenol (39.76%). Larval packet test showed that the EOs of P. racemosa and E. caryophyllata had significant acaricidal activity against unfed larvae of H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 1.20 mg/mL and 0.47 mg/mL and LC90 values of 8.76 mg/mL and 2.91 mg/mL, respectively. The P. racemosa EO, E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol showed significant acaricidal activity against unfed nymph H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 1.65 mg/mL, 2.29 mg/mL and 0.93 mg/mL and LC90 values of 5.03 mg/mL, 11.01 mg/mL and 4.77 mg/mL, respectively. The P. racemosa EO, E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol showed significant acaricidal activity against unfed adults H. longicornis, with LC50 values of 0.51 mg/mL, 2.57 mg/mL and 1.83 mg/mL and LC90 values of 2.44 mg/mL, 11.44 mg/mL and 2.54 mg/mL, respectively. Enzyme assays revealed that the E. caryophyllata EO and eugenol significantly inhibited the activity of carboxylesterase (CarE), eugenol significantly inhibited the activity of catalase (CAT), and two EOs and eugenol had no significant effect on acetylcholinesterase (AchE) (p < 0.05). The above results suggest that the essential oils from P. racemosa and E. caryophyllata have great potential for use as alternatives to synthetic acaricides for tick control.
Comparative toxicity of three variant oils and their nanoemulsions on the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus

Abstract:Tick control mainly depends on using chemical acaricides that have led to the emergence of resistant tick populations along with environmental hazards. Natural alternatives including essential oils are now widely used to avoid the undesirable effects of chemicals on human, animals and environment. In this study, three commercial oils (myrrh, patchouli, and cypress) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) were tested against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato unfed adults. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the nanoemulsions. Four concentrations with three replicates were used in the bioassay of oils and NEs against ticks using an adult immersion test. Furthermore, a toxicity study of the three oils and their NEs using normal fibroblast cells (BJ-1) was performed. TEM revealed particle size ranges from 29 to 211 nm with spherical droplets. The droplet size and polydispersity index were (29.30 nm & 0.367), (211.6 nm & 0.221) and (164.2 nm & 0.237) for myrrh NE, patchouli NE, and cypress NE, respectively. Myrrh and patchouli oils recorded high acaricidal activity followed by cypress oil with LC 50 value 5 days after treatment of 9.01, 12.40, and 15.21%, respectively. The acaricidal efficacy of oil was potentiated in the NEs form which was proved by the reduction in LC 50 values that were recorded 7 days after treatment 4.17, 8.57, and 5.04%, for myrrh, patchouli, and cypress NE, respectively. As an alternative for lab animals, we applied the cytotoxicity of myrrh, patchouli, and cypress on normal fibroblast cells. The oils showed low cytotoxic activity of 10.6, 21.5, and 23.6% for Myrrh, Patchouli, and Cypress, respectively. The nanoemulsion was revealed to be safe for normal cells up to a concentration of 0.62% (cytotoxicity%= 24.4, 34.4, and 16.3%, respectively), and the moderate cytotoxic effect appeared at around a concentration of 1.25% (cytotoxicity%= 42.2%, 57.0%, and 36.8% respectively). In conclusion, the three oils and their NEs have good acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus sanguineus unfed adults. Further toxicity studies on mammals are needed to ensure the safe use of these formulations for the control of ticks on infested animals.

Abstract:Abstract The ixodicidal activity of the methanolic extracts of Artemisia ludoviciana (Astereceae), Cordia boissieri (Boraginaceae) and Litchi chinensis (Sapindaceae) against two field populations of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus from the state of Nuevo Leon (NL) and Veracruz (VER) was evaluated. The extract of L. chinensis in the concentration of 150 mg/ml showed efficacies of 100% and 99% against engorged females and mortalities of 98% and 99% against larvae. C. boissieri in the same concentration showed efficacies of 71% and 37% against engorged adults and mortalities of 33.04% and 10.33% against larvae and A. ludoviciana had efficacies of 94% and 83% in adults and mortalities of 89.39% and 89.21% against larvae in both populations respectively. The enzymatic activity of Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Carboxylesterase (CaE), Glutathione-S-Transferase (GST) and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) was measured in both populations of ticks. As a result, a significant difference between both populations was shown, being the VER population the one that exhibited a higher enzymatic activity (p ≤ 0.05). It can be concluded that the methanolic extract of the seed of L. chinensis shows potential ixodicidal activity and can be used as an alternative source of tick control, however, prior characterization, toxicity and formulation studies are necessary.

Subclavian Central Venous Catheters and Ultrasound Guidance: Policy vs Practice

Abstract:Purpose Policy statements recommend the use of ultrasound guidance (USG) to improve patient safety during placement of central venous catheters (CVCs). Studies have conclusively demonstrated greater success rates and fewer complications with the use of USG in catheter placement using the internal jugular vein approach. Data supporting the use of USG for the subclavian vein (SCV) approach, however, have been less conclusive, and USG for SCV cannulation is rarely used in clinical practice. We compared USG placement versus anatomic placement during subclavian insertion of a CVC. Methods A prospective randomized study was performed in March 2010 using a simulation model. Results Ultrasound guidance did not provide a statistically significant benefit for successful cannulation of the SCV (93.3% with USG and 100% without; P=0.15 or 2) or for rate of inadvertent arterial puncture (3.3% with USG and 0% without; P=0.31). Conclusions The use of USG to access the SCV utilizing a task trainer did not improve time to cannulation or success rates. Further study is required to delineate why USG for SCV cannulation has not been widely adopted in clinical practice.
Alpha- and beta-pinene isomers act differently to control Rhipicephalus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae)

Abstract:The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is an ectoparasite of high importance in veterinary medicine and public health. Since synthetic chemicals used to control these ticks can select resistant strains and cause toxic effects in their hosts, there is a need to identify effective substances with fewer adverse effects. For this reason, we investigated the effects of alpha- and beta-pinene, known for their various biological effects, on the mortality and reproductive performance of R. microplus engorged female ticks. The products were diluted in a 2% Tween 80 aqueous solution. The ticks were first weighed and then immersed in the test solutions for five minutes. Then, they were dried with paper towels and fixed dorsoventrally in Petri dishes, totalling five treatment groups for each pinene and a control group treated with the solvent alone. The ticks were monitored daily for mortality, and their eggs were collected and weighed. The larval hatching rate was estimated, and the pre-oviposition and incubation periods were determined. From these data, the following parameters were calculated: egg production index, fertility rate, estimated reproduction rate, percentages of reduction in oviposition and hatching, and product efficacy. Alpha-pinene showed better results at higher concentrations, unlike beta-pinene, which was more effective at lower concentrations. The effectiveness of alpha-pinene was 74% at a concentration of 14.0 μL/mL, while beta-pinene showed 78% efficacy at 2.0 μL/mL. The results indicated for the first time different effects of two isomers in ticks, suggesting that these compounds act on R. microplus females in different ways.

Chemical composition and larvicidal activity of essential oil from Mentha spicata (Linn.) against three mosquito species

Abstract:Mosquitoes are blood-feeding insects and serve as the most important vectors for spreading human diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, and filariasis. The continued use of synthetic insecticides has resulted in resistance in mosquitoes. Synthetic insecticides are toxic and affect the environment by contaminating soil, water, and air, and then natural products may be an alternative to synthetic insecticides because they are effective, biodegradable, eco-friendly, and safe to environment. Botanical origin may serve as suitable alternative biocontrol techniques in the future. Mentha spicata, an edible and medicinal plant, is chiefly distributed in Southeast Asia and South Asia. In the present study, the toxicity of mosquito larvicidal activity of leaf essential oil (EO) and their major chemical constituents from Mentha spicata against Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, and Anopheles stephensi. The chemical composition of the leaf EO was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). GC-MS revealed that the EO of M. spicata contained 18 compounds. The major chemical components identified were carvone (48.60%), cis-carveol (21.30%), and limonene (11.30%). The EO had a significant toxic effect against early third-stage larvae of C. quinquefasciatus, A. aegypti, and A. stephensi with LC(50) values of 62.62, 56.08, and 49.71 ppm and LC(90) values of 118.70, 110.28, and 100.99 ppm, respectively. The three major pure constituents extracted from the M. spicata leaf EO were also tested individually against three mosquito larvae. The LC(50) values of carvone, cis-carveol, and limonene appeared to be most effective against A. stephensi (LC(50) 19.33, 28.50, and 8.83 ppm) followed by A. aegypti (LC(50) 23.69, 32.88, and 12.01 ppm), and C. quinquefasciatus (LC(50) 25.47, 35.20, and 14.07 ppm). The results could be useful in search for newer, safer, and more effective natural larvicidal agents against C. quinquefasciatus, A. aegypti, and A. stephensi.
Preventing tick attachment to dogs using essential oils

Abstract:Preventing tick bites using repellents could make a valuable contribution to an integrated tick management programme for dogs. Here, the ability of a range of essential oils or active ingredients of commercially available repellents, to abolish the orientation and taxis of the tick Ixodes ricinus towards sebum extracted from dog hair was examined in laboratory bioassays. Substantial differences between oils were observed, but turmeric oil was both able to prevent a climbing response by ticks and had a longer residual activity than other oils. A blanket-drag field assay was then used to compare the attachment of ticks to blankets impregnated with one of: turmeric oil, DEET (positive control), orange-oil or excipient only (negative controls). In total, 899 ticks were counted, with an average of 23.3 (SD ± 21.3) ticks per blanket drag for excipient-only (n = 16), 26.9 (SD ± 28.6) for orange oil (n = 16), 2.6 (SD ± 2.0) for turmeric oil (n = 16) and 3.4 (SD ± 3.7) for DEET (n = 16). Finally, in a participatory in vivo trial, tick acquisition by 15 untreated control dogs was compared with 24 dogs sprayed with turmeric-oil and 16 dogs sprayed with orange oil (both 2.5% v/v diluted in water with a 1% coco glucoside excipient) before each walk in known tick infested areas. The percentage of dogs with ticks attached to the legs or belly of dogs sprayed with turmeric oil suspension (15% ± 19.4%) was significantly lower than that of ticks attached to the same areas of dogs sprayed with orange oil suspension (85% ± 19.4%) and unsprayed dogs (73% ± 26.2%) (P < 0.05). The data indicate that turmeric-oil may form a valuable component of a tick management programme for domestic dogs.
Evaluation of the possible use of genus Mentha derived essential oils in the prevention of SENLAT syndrome caused by Rickettsia slovaca

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Essential oils and essential oil bearing medicinal and culinary plants have a long tradition of being used to combat infection, treat various conditions, and promote and restore health. Mint oils are traditionally applied to repel insects and treat various conditions including wounds, skin infections, inflammation, eczema, urticaria, psoriasis, scabies and insect bites. They are among essential oils promoted as a natural way to prevent tick-borne diseases and recommended as ingredients in various homemade repellent mixtures and tick-bite treatments. Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of three most common mint oils - peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), cornmint (M. arvensis L.), and spearmint (M. spicata L.) on obligate intracellular tick-borne bacterium Rickettsia slovaca. Materials and methods: Influence of mint oils on R. slovaca replication in Vero cells initially infected by lower (106) or higher (108) number of rickettsial particles was tested during in vitro cultivation with daily change of medium. qPCR and RT-qPCR based growth curves and linear mixed effect models were applied to evaluate the growth inhibition. Peppermint oil was further tested in pilot in vivo study on experimentally infected ticks. Results: Two of the tested essential oils, peppermint and cornmint, significantly inhibited rickettsial growth. On average, peppermint oil reduced the amount of rickettsiae present on day 4 post infection up to 0.05% of the rickettsial load present in the respective controls. Cornmint oil decreased the amount of rickettsiae to 0.09% of control. Peppermint oil also significantly reduced the number of living rickettsiae in artificially infected ticks. Conclusions: Present study showed that essential oils with antimicrobial properties may also inhibit tick-transmitted bacteria, and thus their possible use as preventative measures against tick-borne diseases is worth further research.

Abstract:well known for its insecticidal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, anti-rheumatic and antibiotic properties, Turmeric ( Curcuma longa L .) Essential oil (EO), is effective in repelling and controlling many different pest species. The present study evaluates in vitro efficacy of turmeric EO against ectoparasitic tick, Rhipicephalus ( Boophilus)annulatus collected from their natural host, domesticated cows. Repellency and toxicity of the EO on ectoparasitic ticks was analyzed with petri dish choice bioassay and AIT (Adult immersion test) against adult engorged females and nymphal stages of ticks. The Repellency Concentration (RC 50 ) and Lethal Concentration (LC 50 ) reproductive index, inhibition of oviposition and egg hatchability of treated ticks were estimated. GC-MS analysis identified Ar-turmerone as the major phytochemical, which induces adulticidal and repellant properties of EO. The nymphal stages of the ticks exhibited greater repellency on application of EO than the adult stage. Also, EO induced effective mortality in adult ticks. Further, this lethal concentration is capable of producing a decreased output in reproductive parameters namely, fecundity, % of oviposition and egg hatchability in surviving ticks thereby considerably reducing Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) R(B). annulatus population on its host. This study reveals the potency C. longa EO to be used as an effective pest control agent against R (B). annulatus infestation that can serve as an alternative to synthetic pesticides.

Abstract:Ticks are a significant threat to livestock production, and the synthetic acarcides used to control them have had negative effects on the environment, non-target organisms and the animals being treated. As a solution to this problem, it is necessary to explore alternatives that are safer for humans, animals, and the environment. The use of medicinal plants offers a promising solution. In this study, the acaricidal efficacy of Momordica charantia, a medicinal plant, was evaluated using the adult immersion test (AIT). The aqueous extract and essential oil (EO) of M. charantia leaves were evaluated. A positive control (2% cypermethrin) and negative control (distilled water) were used. Different concentrations (2.5, 5, 10, and 20%) of both aqueous and EO of plant were tested with 10 ticks per group. Tick mortality, reproductive index (RI), and inhibition of oviposition (IO %) were measured at 24 hours, 7 days, and 14 days post-treatment (PT). Statistical analysis was conducted using the probit method, with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that both the aqueous extract and EO of M. charantia exhibited low acaricidal activity. Even at the highest EO concentration (20%), only 45% tick mortality was observed. The effect on oviposition was negligible, as the aqueous extract did not inhibit oviposition in live engorged female ticks. Consequently, M. charantia may not be a suitable alternative to synthetic acaricidal agents available on the market.

Abstract:Current vector control strategies based on synthetic chemicals are not eco-friendly against non-target organisms; hence, alternative approaches are highly required. Commercially purchased oil of Mentha spicata (Spearmint) and Eucalyptus citriodora (Citriodora) were examined against the medical pest Cx. quinquefasciatus (Say) and their non-toxicity on the aquatic species was evaluated. Chemical screening with gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS) analysis revealed a total of 14 and 11 compounds in Citriodora and Spearmint oils, respectively, with the highest peak (%) at carvone (70.44%) and isopulegol (30.4%). The larvicidal activity on the fourth instar larvae of Cx. quinquefasciatus showed dose-dependent mortality and significance at a 100 ppm concentration 48 h post-treatment with Citriodora (76.4%, P ≤ 0.001) and Spearmint (100%, P ≤ 0.001). Additionally, the photomicrograph of the fourth instar larvae revealed significant physical abnormalities in the head and midgut tissues post-exposure to Spearmint and Citriodora oils. Moreover, the histological assay revealed severe damage in the epithelial cells and gut lumen 2 to 24 h post-treatment. The repellency percentage of adult Culex mosquitoes was prominent across both oils at 150 ppm 210 min post-exposure. Non-target toxicity on the aquatic predator showed both essential oils (Spearmint oil (17.2%) and Citriodora oil (15.2%)) are safer at the maximum treatment (200 ppm) compared to temephos (75.4% at 1 ppm). The in silico screening of phyto-compounds derived by both essential oils with BeeTox (online server) showed no contact toxicity to the honey bee Apis mellifera . Overall, the present research revealed that Spearmint and Citriodora essential oils and their active phyto-compounds were toxic to Cx. quinquefasciatus and harmless to the aquatic predator and honey bee.

Abstract:The goal of this study is to explore the effects of lemongrass and peppermint essential oils, specifically at their LC50 concentrations, on the demographic parameters of two mite species: Oligonychus mangiferus (Rahman & Sapra) and its predatory mite counterpart, Cydnoseius negevi (Swirskii & Amitai). By evaluating these essential oils, the study aims to contribute to eco-friendly pest management strategies within integrated pest management (IPM) programs. The effects of these oils were assessed in terms of measuring the activity of antioxidant and detoxifying enzymes. GC–MS was used to identify the chemical components of these oils. The main compounds identified by GC–MS in lemongrass and peppermint essential oils were D-Limonene (45.06%), β-Citral (10.30%), α-Citral (9.90%)) and (Menthol (32.03%), Menthone (30.18%), p -Menthan-3-one (11.53%), respectively. The results showed that lemongrass and peppermint were more toxic to O. mangiferus than to C. negevi . Exposure of O. mangiferus to the LC 50 of these oils caused a significant increase in peroxidase and catalase enzymes, but it inhibited the detoxifying enzymes, α-esterase, β-esterase, and glutathione s-transferase. Also, these oils had disruptive effects on survival, longevity, and fecundity of O. mangiferus ; as they reduced its demographic parameters such as ( R 0 ) ( GRR ) ( r m ), and ( λ ). However, they did not show any substantial change in the development time and demographic parameters of C. negevi . On the contrary, they improved its enzymes activity. According to these findings, these essential oils can be used in combination with biological control agents in the integrated pest management strategies against the mango spider mite, O. mangiferus .

Abstract:Effective mosquito repellents can limit the transmission of vector-borne diseases to humans. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop mosquito control strategies that prioritize eco-friendly and cost-effective repellents. Essential oils (EOs) have enormous potential for mosquito repellency. Here, cinnamon, basil, eucalyptus, and peppermint EOs were investigated for adulticide and repellency properties against Culex pipiens as well on the oviposition behavior of gravid females from laboratory (lab test) and field (field test) populations. Cinnamon oil was an effective oviposition deterrent regardless of the population and had high adulticidal activity with toxicity index of 75.00% at 24 h of exposure, relative to deltamethrin. In addition, it exhibited effective repellency at 98.01% and 71.22% at 6.67 and 1.71 μl/cm 2 , respectively. Peppermint oil had the least adulticidal activity with toxicity index of 6.2% at 24 h, and it resulted in low repellency at 70.90% and 50.64% at 6.67 and 1.71 μl/cm 2 , respectively. On average, basil and eucalyptus oils showed some adulticidal efficiency, repellency, and oviposition deterrent activity. For all treatments, the oviposition deterrent index values of gravid females from natural populations (field test) were lower than those from lab-reared (lab test) females. Different ratios of monoterpenoids, phenylpropanoids, and fatty acids in the EOs tested likely account for the activity variations observed. Our results suggest cinnamon, basil, eucalyptus, and peppermint EOs, which are widely available, economical, and eco-friendly, with good potential for mosquito control strategies.

Abstract:In this study, the chemical compositions of essential oils obtained from three plants, namely Salvia officinalis, Lavandula angustifolia, and Mentha pulegium , along with their insecticidal activities and feeding deterrence against Plodia interpunctella , were investigated. The chemical composition of S. officinalis essential oil was majorly dominated by α-thujone (26.99%) and camphor (25.50%); on the other hand, limonene (66.12%), eucalyptol (66.12%), and camphor (14.31%) were the major compounds of L. angustifolia essential oil whereas for M. pulegium EO a dominance of pulegone (83.06%) was attained. M. pulegium essential oil showed important contact toxicity (100%) at 3 hours of exposure with the 0.25 μL/cm 2 concentration, followed by S. officinalis and L. angustifolia with 90% of mortality reported with the highest concentration of 0.50% within 3 hours. A relative growth rate (RGR) of 0.08 mg/mg/day and -0.31 mg/mg/day was recorded with S. officinalis and M. pulegium oils, respectively, with the highest concentration of 32 μL/pellet. With L. angustifolia the lowest RGR of -0.08 mg/mg/day was attained with the 16 μl/pellet concentration. The food deterrence index experienced an increase to 89% with S. officinalis and L. angustifolia oils for the three concentrations; with M. pulegium , 68.18% was recorded with the 32 μL/pellet. In conclusion, this study suggests that these essential oils could potentially serve as an effective contact toxicant and a potent eco-friendly inhibitory of the feeding behavior of Plodia interpunctella larvae.

Abstract:Tetradenia riparia (Hochst.) Codd (Lamiaceae) is a shrub, commonly known as ginger bush or false myrrh, and several studies have shown that T. riparia exhibits a variety of biological properties. This study aimed to determine the chemical composition of T. riparia essential oil and its fractions, investigate their anticholinesterase activity, and assess their larvicidal activity against the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus and the mosquito Aedes aegypti. Eleven essential oil fractions were obtained by fractionation and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Larvicidal activity against R. microplus and third-instar A. aegypti was assessed using a larval packet test and a larval immersion test, respectively. Anticholinesterase activity was determined by a bioautographic method. Forty-nine compounds were identified in the essential oil, of which the major classes were oxygenated sesquiterpenes (45.95%) and sesquiterpene hydrocarbons (35.20%) and the major components were isospathulenol (17.40%), β-caryophyllene (15.61%), 14-hydroxy-9-epi-caryophyllene (10.07%), 14-hydroxy-α-muurolene (8.32%), and 9β,13β-epoxy-7-abietene (5.53%). Bioassays showed that T. riparia essential oil (LC50 = 1.56 μg/mL) and FR3 (LC50 = 0.30 μg/mL) were the most active against R. microplus and A. aegypti larvae, respectively. The essential oil and FR1, FR2, and FR3 exhibited acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. These results indicate that T. riparia essential oil and its fractions hold promise in the development of novel, environmentally safe agents for the control of R. microplus and A. aegypti larvae.

Roles of α-Farnesene in the Behaviors of Codling Moth Females

Abstract:Reproduction and olfactory behavioral responses of codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), females to synthetic α-farnesene were observed in the laboratory as well as their reproduction behaviors in an apple orchard. Calling levels were lifted and ovipositional peaks were advanced in codling moth females at presence of 1μg and 0.1 μg of α-farnesene, respectively. Mated females of codling moth more actively responded to 0.01 μg α-farnesene with walking and wing-fanning while walking than to other doses (0.001, 0.1, 1, 10 μg ) and control. The results show that α-farnesene plays important roles in the behaviors of codling moth females. However, the differences between responses to α-farnesene and those to apple volatiles by codling moth females indicate that components other than α-farnesene in apple volatiles also have biological activities
