Abstract:Background: The NLRP3 inflammasome plays an important role in mediating podocyte injury in various kidney diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate whether NLRP3 expression associated with podocyte injury was involved in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN). Methods: NLRP3 inflammasomes and macrophage marker (F4/80) were detected in the renal tissues of IgAN patients. Association between kidney NLRP3 levels and the clinical feature of IgAN patients was analyzed. Podocytes were incubated with serum containing dys-glycosylated IgA1 protein isolated from IgAN patients. Expression of NLRP3 inflammasomes, F4/80, inflammatory cytokine and renal fibrosis marker were measured using RT-PCR and Western blotting. Results: Renal NLRP3 inflammasome expression was significantly increased in IgAN patients compared to normal control tissues. Moreover, co-expression of NLRP3 and F4/80 could be observed in the podocytes of IgAN patients. Patients with eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 had remarkably higher tubular NLRP3 expression (P < 0.05), while patients with gross proteinuria (≥ 3.5 g/day) had a significantly higher glomerular NLRP3 expression (P < 0.05). Further analysis indicated that dys-glycosylated IgA1 isolated from IgAN patient serum could induce podocyte expression of NLRP3 and the macrophage marker F4/80, which could lead to induction of an inflammatory reaction (increased expression of ICAM-1) and fibrosis (increased expression of α-SMA). Conclusion: Dys-glycosylated IgA1 isolated from IgAN patient serum could induce NLRP3 expression in podocytes and initiate podocyte macrophage transdifferentiation (PMT). After PMT, podocytes secrete proinflammatory cytokines that can contribute to the inflammation cascade and renal fibrosis changes associated with IgAN.
Activation of the Nlrp3 inflammasome by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species: a novel mechanism of albumin-induced tubulointerstitial inflammation

Abstract:Albuminuria is not only an important marker of chronic kidney disease but also a crucial contributor to tubulointerstitial inflammation (TIF). In this study, we determined whether activation of the Nlrp3 inflammasome is involved in albuminuria induced-TIF and the underlying mechanisms of inflammasome activation by mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mROS). We established an albumin-overload induced rat nephropathy model characterised by albuminuria, renal infiltration of inflammatory cells, tubular dilation and atrophy. The renal expression levels of the Nlrp3 inflammasome, IL-1β and IL-18 were significantly increased in this animal model. In vitro, albumin time- and dose-dependently increased the expression levels of the Nlrp3 inflammasome, IL-1β and IL18. Moreover, the silencing of the Nlrp3 gene or the use of the caspase-1 inhibitor Z-VAD-fmk significantly attenuated the albumin-induced increase in IL-1β and IL-18 expression in HK2 cells. In addition, mROS generation was elevated by albumin stimulation, whereas the ROS scavenger N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) inhibited Nlrp3 expression and the release of IL-1β and IL-18. In kidney biopsy specimens obtained from patients with IgA nephropathy, Nlrp3 expression was localised to the proximal tubular epithelial cells, and this result is closely correlated with the extent of proteinuria and TIF. In summary, this study demonstrates that albuminuria may serve as an endogenous danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) that stimulates TIF via the mROS-mediated activation of the cytoplasmic Nlrp3 inflammasome.

Abstract:Macrophages are exceptionally diversified cell types and perform unique features and functions when exposed to different stimuli within the specific microenvironment of various kidney diseases. In instances of kidney tissue necrosis or infection, specific patterns associated with damage or pathogens prompt the development of pro-inflammatory macrophages (M1). These M1 macrophages contribute to exacerbating tissue damage, inflammation, and eventual fibrosis. Conversely, anti-inflammatory macrophages (M2) arise in the same circumstances, contributing to kidney repair and regeneration processes. Impaired tissue repair causes fibrosis, and hence macrophages play a protective and pathogenic role. In response to harmful stimuli within the body, inflammasomes, complex assemblies of multiple proteins, assume a pivotal function in innate immunity. The initiation of inflammasomes triggers the activation of caspase 1, which in turn facilitates the maturation of cytokines, inflammation, and cell death. Macrophages in the kidneys possess the complete elements of the NLRP3 inflammasome, including NLRP3, ASC, and pro-caspase-1. When the NLRP3 inflammasomes are activated, it triggers the activation of caspase-1, resulting in the release of mature proinflammatory cytokines (IL)-1β and IL-18 and cleavage of Gasdermin D (GSDMD). This activation process therefore then induces pyroptosis, leading to renal inflammation, cell death, and renal dysfunction. The NLRP3–ASC–caspase-1–IL-1β–IL-18 pathway has been identified as a factor in the development of the pathophysiology of numerous kidney diseases. In this review, we explore current progress in understanding macrophage behavior concerning inflammation, injury, and fibrosis in kidneys. Emphasizing the pivotal role of activated macrophages in both the advancement and recovery phases of renal diseases, the article delves into potential strategies to modify macrophage functionality and it also discusses emerging approaches to selectively target NLRP3 inflammasomes and their signaling components within the kidney, aiming to facilitate the healing process in kidney diseases.

Abstract:The cytoplasmic oligomer NLR Family Pyrin Domain Containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has been implicated in most inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Here, we highlight the significance of NLRP3 in diverse renal disorders, demonstrating its activation in macrophages and non-immune tubular epithelial and mesangial cells in response to various stimuli. This activation leads to the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, contributing to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic renal injury, or fibrosis. In AKI, NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptotic renal tubular cell death is driven by contrast and chemotherapeutic agents, sepsis, and rhabdomyolysis. Nevertheless, inflammasome is provoked in disorders such as crystal and diabetic nephropathy, obesity-related renal fibrosis, lupus nephritis, and hypertension-induced renal damage that induce chronic kidney injury and/or fibrosis. The mechanisms by which the inflammatory NLRP3/ Apoptosis-associated Speck-like protein containing a Caspase recruitment domain (ASC)/caspase-1/interleukin (IL)-1β & IL-18 pathway can turn on renal fibrosis is also comprehended. This review further outlines the involvement of dopamine and its associated G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), including D1-like (D1, D5) and D2-like (D2-D4) subtypes, in regulating this inflammation-linked renal dysfunction pathway. Hence, we identify D-related receptors as promising targets for renal disease management by inhibiting the functionality of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Abstract:Background: Chronic kidney disease often leads to kidney dysfunction due to renal fibrosis, regardless of the initial cause of kidney damage. Macrophages are crucial players in the progression of renal fibrosis as they stimulate inflammation, activate fibroblasts, and contribute to extracellular matrix deposition, influenced by their metabolic state. Nucleotide-binding domain and LRR-containing protein X (NLRX1) is an innate immune receptor independent of inflammasomes and is found in mitochondria, and it plays a role in immune responses and cell metabolism. The specific impact of NLRX1 on macrophages and its involvement in renal fibrosis is not fully understood. Methods: To explore the specific role of NLRX1 in macrophages, bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) extracted from wild-type (WT) and NLRX1 knockout (KO) mice were stimulated with pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic factors to induce M1 and M2 polarization in vitro. The expression levels of macrophage polarization markers (Nos2, Mgl1, Arg1, and Mrc1), as well as the secretion of transforming growth factor β (TGFβ), were measured using RT-PCR and ELISA. Seahorse-based bioenergetics analysis was used to assess mitochondrial respiration in naïve and polarized BMDMs obtained from WT and NLRX1 KO mice. In vivo, WT and NLRX1 KO mice were subjected to unilateral ureter obstruction (UUO) surgery to induce renal fibrosis. Kidney injury, macrophage phenotypic profile, and fibrosis markers were assessed using RT-PCR. Histological staining (PASD and Sirius red) was used to quantify kidney injury and fibrosis. Results: Compared to the WT group, an increased gene expression of M2 markers-including Mgl1 and Mrc1-and enhanced TGFβ secretion were found in naïve BMDMs extracted from NLRX1 KO mice, indicating functional polarization towards the pro-fibrotic M2 subtype. NLRX1 KO naïve macrophages also showed a significantly enhanced oxygen consumption rate compared to WT cells and increased basal respiration and maximal respiration capacities that equal the level of M2-polarized macrophages. In vivo, we found that NLRX1 KO mice presented enhanced M2 polarization markers together with enhanced tubular injury and fibrosis demonstrated by augmented TGFβ levels, fibronectin, and collagen accumulation. Conclusions: Our findings highlight the unique role of NLRX1 in regulating the metabolism and function of macrophages, ultimately protecting against excessive renal injury and fibrosis in UUO.

Abstract:Inflammatory and innate immune responses triggered by pathogen-associated and other danger-associated signals emerging during infections, results in the activation of cytosolic inflammasomes. The nod-like receptor pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) is one of the inflammasomes mediating such responses through the activation of caspase-1, which increases the production and release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β and IL-18 and induces programmed cell death through pyroptosis. NLRP3 is thought to play a crucial role in the underlying inflammatory responses in many lifestyles related chronic diseases. Consequently, research on the NLRP3 inflammasome has expanded dramatically in recent years. Although several studies have investigated the role of NLRP3 activation in chronic kidney disease (CKD), few studies have evaluated strategies to modulate its activation by means of interventions using non-pharmacological strategies. This review discusses some nutritional strategies (bioactive compounds, probiotics and caloric restriction) that have been shown to influence NLRP3 in experimental models of renal disease, and in CKD. It discusses how nutritional interventions could potentially dampen NLRP3 associated inflammatory burden, as part of nutritional strategies to prevent and treat CKD and its complications.

AKI induces the activation of the immune system being the connection with the disturbance in remote organs as the heart. In response to tissue damage, different inflammatory pathways are activated. In this sense, activation of cardiac nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor (NLR) family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome has been studied in several cardiac pathologies. Nevertheless, the role of cardiac NLRP3 in ventricular cardiomyocytes as a consequence of renal damage is unknown. Purpose The overall aim of this study was to analyse the involvement of NLRP3 in AKI-induced cardiac damage in CRS3. Firstly, we evaluated the predictive value for mortality of the inflammatory component associated with the NLRP3 in a cohort of AKI patients. Then, we studied whether cardiac NLRP3 activation takes place after AKI induction and whether this may be associated with functional alterations in ventricular cardiomyocytes related to cardiac dysfunction and predisposition to ventricular arrhytmia. Methods We have studied cardiac alterations resulting from AKI induced by folic acid (FA, 250 mg/Kg) after 72 hours in wild-type (WT), Nlrp3-/- and WT AKI mice treated with the NLRP3 inhibitor MCC950 (10 mg/Kg). We examined plasma, renal and cardiac inflammatory components associated with NLRP3, as well as cardiomyocyte intracellular Ca2+ handling by confocal microscopy in all experimental groups. In AKI patients, we analysed systemic NLRP3-related cytokine levels and their possible relationship with markers of renal and cardiac damage and the prediction of mortality. Results FA-induced AKI caused a worsening of contractile function in WT cardiomyocytes due to decreased systolic Ca2+ release after 72 hours. It was accompanied by impaired Ca2+ reuptake via SERCA2a. Nevertheless, in both MCC950-treated and NLRP3-/- mice, these alterations were significantly prevented. During diastole, significant Ca2+ leakage from the sarcoplasmic reticulum was observed after 72 hours of AKI-induction, as well as increased pro-arrhythmogenic events. These alterations were prevented in both NLRP3-/- and MCC950-treated AKI mice. In AKI patients, we found that NLRP3-related cytokines increased from the time of admission to 72 hours, significantly associated with biomarkers of renal and cardiovascular damage, and exhibited a high potential to predict mortality. Conclusions AKI impairs the cytosolic Ca2+ handling in ventricular cardiomyocytes that are translated into contractile dysfunction and increased occurrence of pro-arrhythmogenic events. These cardiac alterations are strongly prevented under NLRP3 blockade, demonstrating the deleterious role of its cardiac activation in CRS3. In addition, results from AKI patients point to NLRP3 as relevant prognostic target in AKI patients at the time of admission to hospital.

Abstract:The NLRP3 inflammasome is an intracellular platform that converts the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18 to their active forms in response to 'danger' signals, which can be either host or pathogen derived, and mediates a form of inflammatory cell death called pyroptosis. This component of the innate immune system was initially discovered because of its role in rare autoinflammatory syndromes called cryopyrinopathies, but it has since been shown to mediate injurious inflammation in a broad range of diseases. Inflammasome activation occurs in both immune cells, primarily macrophages and dendritic cells, and in some intrinsic kidney cells such as the renal tubular epithelium. The NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of renal conditions, including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy and crystal-related nephropathy. The inflammasome also plays a role in autoimmune kidney disease, as IL-1β and IL-18 influence adaptive immunity through modulation of T helper cell subsets, skewing development in favour of Th17 and Th1 cells that are important in the development of autoimmunity. Both IL-1 blockade and two recently identified specific NLRP3 inflammasome blockers, MCC950 and β-hydroxybutyrate, have shown promise in the treatment of inflammasome-mediated conditions. These targeted therapies have the potential to be of benefit in the growing number of kidney diseases in which the NLRP3 inflammasome has been implicated.

Abstract:Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospitalized patients and is associated with high mortality. Inflammation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of AKI. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are increasingly recognized as regulators of the inflammatory and immune response, but its role in AKI remains unclear. Methods We explored the role of lncRNA Neat1 in (1) a cross-sectional and a longitudinal cohort of AKI in human; (2) three murine models of septic and aseptic AKI and (3) cultured C1.1 mouse kidney tubular cells. Results In human, hospitalized patients with AKI (n=66) demonstrated significantly increased lncRNA Neat1 levels in urinary sediment cells and buffy coat versus control participants (n=152) from a primary care clinic; and among 6 kidney transplant recipients, Neat1 levels were highest immediately after transplant surgery followed by a prompt decline to normal levels in parallel with recovery of kidney function. In mice with AKI induced by sepsis (via LPS injection or cecal ligation and puncture) and renal ischemia-reperfusion, kidney tubular Neat1 was increased versus sham-operated mice. Knockdown of Neat1 in the kidney using short hairpin RNA preserved kidney function, suppressed overexpression of the AKI biomarker NGAL, leukocyte infiltration and both intrarenal and systemic inflammatory cytokines IL-6, CCL-2 and IL-1β. In LPS-treated C1.1 cells, Neat1 was overexpressed via TLR4/NF-κB signaling, and translocated from the cell nucleus into the cytoplasm where it promoted activation of NLRP3 inflammasomes via binding with the scaffold protein Rack1. Silencing Neat1 ameliorated LPS-induced cell inflammation, whereas its overexpression upregulated IL-6 and CCL-2 expression even without LPS stimulation. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate a pathogenic role of Neat1 induction in human and mice during AKI with alleviation of kidney injury in 3 experimental models of septic and aseptic AKI after knockdown of Neat1. LPS/TLR4-induced Neat1 overexpression in tubular epithelial cells increases the inflammatory response by binding with the scaffold protein, Rack1, to activate NLRP3 inflammasomes.

Abstract:Nephrocalcinosis, acute calcium oxalate (CaOx) nephropathy, and renal stone disease can lead to inflammation and subsequent renal failure, but the underlying pathological mechanisms remain elusive. Other crystallopathies, such as gout, atherosclerosis, and asbestosis, trigger inflammation and tissue remodeling by inducing IL-1β secretion, leading us to hypothesize that CaOx crystals may induce inflammation in a similar manner. In mice, intrarenal CaOx deposition induced tubular damage, cytokine expression, neutrophil recruitment, and renal failure. We found that CaOx crystals activated murine renal DCs to secrete IL-1β through a pathway that included NLRP3, ASC, and caspase-1. Despite a similar amount of crystal deposits, intrarenal inflammation, tubular damage, and renal dysfunction were abrogated in mice deficient in MyD88; NLRP3, ASC, and caspase-1; IL-1R; or IL-18. Nephropathy was attenuated by DC depletion, ATP depletion, or therapeutic IL-1 antagonism. These data demonstrated that CaOx crystals trigger IL-1β-dependent innate immunity via the NLRP3/ASC/caspase-1 axis in intrarenal mononuclear phagocytes and directly damage tubular cells, leading to the release of the NLRP3 agonist ATP. Furthermore, these results suggest that IL-1β blockade may prevent renal damage in nephrocalcinosis.
Severe Oxalosis Secondary to Acute Kidney Disease Contributes to Delayed Early Recovery of Renal Function

Abstract:Abstract Backgrounds: This study aimed to summarize and analyze the clinicopathological features of acute kidney disease patients with renal oxalosis, to improve understanding of the disease characteristics. Methods: Data for patients with acute kidney disease (AKD) diagnosed from January 2011 to October 2018 and confirmed by renal biopsy showing oxalate crystal deposition were collected. The underlying diseases, dietary habits before disease onset, pathological characteristics of newly emerging kidney disease, renal oxalosis, and causes of AKD were analyzed. Urine volume, serum creatinine, uric acid, and electrolyte clearance were recorded. The long-term renal prognosis was observed. Results: A total of 23 patients with AKD and renal oxalosis were included. The patients comprised 18 men (78.3%) and 5 women (21.7%) with a mean age of 51.6 ± 15.9 years. The peak serum creatinine was 669.9 ± 299.8 μmol/L, and 95.7% of patients had stage 3 acute kidney injury. Drug-induced AKD was the most common cause (65.2%), followed by severe nephrotic syndrome (17.4%). Other causes included severe glomerulonephritis, and infection. All patients had pathological changes indicating tubulointerstitial disease (TIN), and 11 patients were complicated with newly emerging glomerular disease (GD). Oxalate deposits caused by increased enterogenous oxalate absorption accounted for 26.1%, and most of the causes came from new kidney diseases. Oxalate crystals were located in the renal tubule. The majority (75%) of moderate to severe oxalate crystal deposition occurred in patients without GD. There were no significant differences in the total score for acute tubulointerstitial injury, score for tubular injury (T-IS), and score for interstitial inflammation in patients with different severities of renal oxalosis. Rate of serum creatinine decrease (ΔScr%) was negatively correlated with severity of oxalosis (R = −0.542, P = 0.037), score for acute tubular injury (R = −0.553, P = 0.033), and age (R = −0.736, P = 0.002). ΔScr% at week 4 was correlated with T-IS (R = −0.433, P = 0.050), but was not correlated with severity of oxalosis. Conclusions: The present findings revealed that 95.7% of AKD cases with renal oxalosis occurred in critically ill patients, secondary to kidney injury with tubular injury, and that drug-induced AKD was the most common cause. Severe oxalosis contributed to delayed early recovery of renal function.
Interleukin-22 Attenuated Renal Tubular Injury in Aristolochic Acid Nephropathy via Suppressing Activation of NLRP3 Inflammasome

Abstract:Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN), as a rapidly progressive interstitial nephropathy due to excessive ingestion of aristolochia herbal medications, has recently raised considerable concerns among clinicians and researchers as its underlying pathogenic mechanisms are largely unclear. In the current study, we identified NLRP3 inflammasome activation as a novel pathological mechanism of AAN. We found that NLRP3 inflammasome was aberrantly activated both <i>in vivo</i> and <i>in vitro</i> after AA exposure. Blockade of IL-1β and NLRP3 inflammasome activation by IL-1Ra significantly attenuated renal tubular injury and function loss in AA-induced nephropathy. Moreover, NLRP3 or Caspase-1 deficiency protected against renal injury in the mouse model of acute AAN, suggesting that the NLRP3 signaling pathway was probably involved in the pathogenesis of AAN. We also found that administration of IL-22 could markedly attenuate renal tubular injury in AAN. Notably, IL-22 intervention significantly alleviated renal fibrosis and dysfunction in AA-induced nephropathy. Furthermore, IL-22 largely inhibited renal activation of NLRP3 inflammasome in AA-induced nephropathy. These results indicated that IL-22 ameliorated renal tubular injury in AAN through suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation. In summary, this study identified renal activation of NLRP3 inflammasome as a novel mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of AAN, thus providing a potential therapeutic strategy for AAN based on suppression of NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

Abstract:Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a group of complex metabolic disorders syndrome, which refers to the pathological state of metabolism disorder of protein, fat, carbohydrate and other substances in human body. The kidney is an important organ of metabolism, and various metabolic disorders can lead to the abnormalities in the structure and function of the kidney. The recognition of pathogenesis and treatment measures of renal damage in MS is a very important part for the renal function preserve. Inflammatory response caused by various metabolic factors is a protective mechanism of the body, but persistent inflammation will become a harmful factor and aggravate kidney damage. Inflammasomes are sensors of the innate immune system that play crucial roles in initiating inflammation in response to acute infections and chronic diseases. They are multiprotein complex composed of cytoplasmic sensors (mainly NLR family members), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC or PYCARD) and pro-caspase-1. After receiving exogenous and endogenous stimuli, the sensors begin to assemble inflammasome and then promote the release of inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-18, resulting in a special way of cell death named pyroptosis. In the kidney, NLRP3 inflammasome can be activated by a variety of pathways, which eventually leads to inflammatory infiltration, renal intrinsic cell damage and renal function decline. This paper reviews the function and specific regulatory mechanism of inflammasome in kidney damage caused by various metabolic disorders, which will provide a new therapeutic perspective and targets for kidney diseases.

Abstract:We have previously showed that IL-1β is involved in the pathogenesis of both spontaneously occurring and passively induced IgA nephropathy (IgAN) models. However, the exact causal-relationship between NLRP3 inflammasome and the pathogenesis of IgAN remains unknown. In the present study, we showed that [1] IgA immune complexes (ICs) activated NLRP3 inflammasome in macrophages involving disruption of mitochondrial integrity and induction of mitochondrial ROS, bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) and renal intrinsic cells; [2] knockout of NLRP3 inhibited IgA ICs-mediated activation of BMDCs and T cells; and [3] knockout of NLRP3 or a kidney-targeting delivery of shRNA of NLRP3 improved renal function and renal injury in a mouse IgAN model. These results strongly suggest that NLRP3 inflammasome serves as a key player in the pathogenesis of IgAN partly through activation of T cells and mitochondrial ROS production and that a local, kidney-targeting suppression of NLRP3 be a therapeutic strategy for IgAN.

Abstract:BackgroundNucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptors (NLRs) are intracellular sensors of pathogens and molecules from damaged cells to regulate the inflammatory response in the innate immune system. Emerging evidences suggested a potential role of NLRs in anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (AAV). This study aimed to investigate the expression of nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain containing protein 2 (NOD2), NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and NOD-like receptor family CARD domain containing 5 (NLRC5) in kidneys of AAV patients, and further explored their associations with clinical and pathological parameters.MethodsThirty-four AAV patients in active stage were recruited. Their renal specimens were processed with immunohistochemistry to assess the expression of three NLRs, and with double immunofluorescence to detect NLRs on intrinsic and infiltrating cells. Analysis of gene expression was also adopted in cultured human podocytes. The associations between expression of NLRs and clinicopathological parameters were analyzed.ResultsThe expression of NOD2, NLRP3 and NLRC5 was significantly higher in kidneys from AAV patients than those from normal controls, minimal change disease or class IV lupus nephritis. These NLRs co-localized with podocytes and infiltrating inflammatory cells. The mean optical density of NOD2 in glomeruli was significantly higher in crescentic class than non-crescentic class, and correlated with levels of proteinuria and serum creatinine at renal biopsy. The mean optical density of NLRC5 in glomeruli was significantly higher in crescentic class than non-crescentic class, and correlated with proteinuria level, Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score and the proportion of crescents in the renal specimen.ConclusionsThe expression of three NLRs was upregulated in kidneys of AAV patients. The expression of NOD2 and NLRC5 was associated with the severity of renal lesions in AAV.
