Abstract:Organic dyes that are extensively released in wastewater from various industries remain the priority concern in the modern world. Therefore, a novel catalyst, bismuth–iron selenide, was prepared through the solvothermal process for photocatalytic degradation of a carcinogenic crystal violet dye. The catalyst was supported with chitosan to form iron–bismuth selenide–chitosan microspheres (BISe-CM). The synthesized catalyst was composed of iron, bismuth, and selenium in a definite proportion based on EDX analysis. FTIR analysis confirmed the synthesis of BISe-CM from characteristic bands of metal selenium bond as well as the typical bands of chitosan. SEM analysis illustrated the average diameter of the barren catalyst to be 54.8 nm, while the average size of the microspheres was 982.5 um. The BISe-CM has the surface of a pore with an average size of 0.5 um. XRD analysis revealed that the synthesized catalyst was composed of Fe3Se4 and Bi2Se3. The prepared catalyst showed better degradation efficiency for crystal violet dye at optimized conditions under solar irradiation. Employing 0.2 g of BISe-CM resulted in complete degradation for 30 ppm of crystal violet dye in 150 min at pH 8.0. The reusability of the catalyst up to four consecutive times makes it a more attractive and practical candidate. Moreover, the catalyst followed pseudo-first-order kinetics in the decontamination of crystal violet. Conclusively, the novel photocatalyst showed the best decolorizing property of crystal violet under sunlight irradiation and could be a suitable alternative for dye decontamination from wastewater.

Abstract:Wastewater from many sectors that contains hazardous organic pollutants exacerbates environmental contamination. Consequently, outstanding photocatalytic substances that can successfully degrade hazardous substances are needed to provide pollution-free water. From this perspective, zinc oxide/g-C3N4-based composites are desirable due to their low cost, strong reactivity, and environmental friendliness. So, in the current investigation, sequences of Mn/g-C3N4/ZnO (Mn/GZ) and Ni/g-C3N4/ZnO (Ni/GZ) nanocomposites (NCs) containing different concentrations (wt.%) of g-C3N4 were made via the co-precipitation process. The chemical makeup and morphological characteristics of the produced composites were ascertained via the techniques of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), photoluminescence (PL), and UV spectrophotometry. Methyl orange (MO) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dyes were used as target pollutants to assess the composite materials' photocatalytic effectiveness. Compared to g-C3N4/ZnO and g-C3N4, the produced Mn/GZ and Ni/GZ NCs displayed better photocatalytic activity. The improved photocatalytic efficiency of the Ni/GZ and Mn/GZ NCs might be credited to synergistic interactions at the g-C3N4 and ZnO interface that result in a more efficient separation and conduction of photo-induced charges. Furthermore, the Ni/Mn atoms act as the facilitators to improve electron–hole pair separation and conduction in NCs. The nanocomposites were found to be incredibly stable, with consistently high dye decoloration efficiency over five catalytic cycles. Hence, Ni/GZ and Mn/GZ could potentially be very effective and adaptable photocatalysts for the photocatalytic decoloration of wastewater pollutants.

Abstract:The advancement of economical, facile and non-toxic approaches towards waste water treatment is a promising research area currently among scientific community. In this regard photocatalysis has specifically received significant attention due to its application in the eradication of toxic elements from wastewater. Hence, in the present study Ce-doped FeSe 2 photocatalysts were prepared employing the simple, inexpensive and ecofriendly hydrothermal method. The prepared Ce-FeSe 2 nanomaterial was subjected to different characterization techniques like x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and UV–visible spectroscopy to explore the characteristic properties of the prepared nanomaterials. XRD results revealed good crystallinity and purity of all synthesized Ce-FeSe 2 nanomaterials. Surface morphology and elemental composition of the prepared nanomaterials was determined by FE-SEM and EDS spectroscopy. UV-Visible spectroscopy was used to explore the optical characteristic of the prepared photocatalysts. The results of optical absorption spectrum confirmed that increasing dopant percentage shows an improvement towards optical properties. The photocatalytic ability of the prepared Ce-FeSe 2 nanomaterials was examined against the potentially toxic industrial dyes like Rhoadmine B (RB). The photocatalytic results show that 95.21% of dye degradation was exhibited by 7% Ce- doped FeSe2 nanomaterial under UV-visible light illumination duration of 120 min. Findings of the photocatalytic degradation process fitted well with pseudo first order reaction kinetics for RB dye.

Abstract:Both human health and aquatic environments are at risk of contamination by industrial wastewater. These contaminants, which are hazardous organic dye pollutants, can cause extreme harm if not addressed effectively. Therefore, addressing the degradation of hazardous organic dye pollutants is crucial. Using the co-precipitation technique, manganese nickel selenide-chitosan nanoparticles (MnNiSeCs-NPs) were prepared. The fabrication of the nanocomposites was verified by FTIR study. Using the SEM method, the average particle size was measured to be 74 nm. The elemental composition of the nanocomposites was further studied using EDX, which demonstrated the existence of Se, Mn, and Ni in the nanocomposite. For determining the crystalline structure, XRD was utilized, and the measured crystallite size was 24.2 nm. The photocatalyst exhibited a reduced bandgap of 2.3 eV. When subjected to sunlight irradiation by optimizing the reaction conditions, including a 75-min duration, 40 ppm dye solution of pH 7, and 0.1 g photocatalyst dosage, effective photodegradation of Alizarin red dye upto 98% was attained using the synthesized MnNiSeCs-NPs. Likewise, 96% degradation of tartrazine dye was accomplished with the same optimum parameters of time, pH, and ppm while only increasing the catalyst dosage to 0.2 g. Both reactions follow pseudo-first-order kinetic principles. Notably, the MnNiSeCs-NP catalyst exhibited recyclability in four sequential batches. These findings indicate that the MnNiSeCs-NPs are extremely efficient, economically viable, and useful photocatalysts for reducing pollutants in industrial effluent with great environmental remediation potential.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: With the development of the textile and dye industry, a large amount of dye wastewater has been discharged. Semiconductor photocatalysis has been widely used in the treatment of environmental pollution, so it is very important to study efficient, nontoxic and stable photocatalysts. RESULTS: In this study, a microspherical activated carbon/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite photocatalyst with high catalytic activity was synthesized using sol-gel and chemical precipitation methods. The photocatalyst was characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and photocurrent measurements, and the effects of the initial methylene blue (MB) concentration and pH on the catalytic performance of the photocatalyst were investigated. The results revealed that the MC/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite has large light absorbance, and it can effectively inhibit photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination. The catalyst exhibited high photocatalytic degradation activity, and the degradation efficiency of MB at 300 ppm and pH 7 reached 99% after 80 min of UV light irradiation. The photodegradation process conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Recyclability experiments showed that MC/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite has high stability, and the degradation rate of MB is > 70% after three repeat uses. Synthesis, Characterization, and Solar Photo-Activation of Chitosan-Modified Nickel Magnetite Bio-Composite for Degradation of Recalcitrant Organic Pollutants in Water

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a promising process for decomposing harmful organic pollutants in water. In this study, solar/photocatalytic degradation of two model azo dyes, i.e., methylene blue (MB) and methyl red (MR), in water usinga nanostructured chitosan-modified nickel magnetite (CS-NM) bio-composite was investigated. The CS-NM bio-composite was synthesized through a co-precipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), thermogravimetry (TGA), and UV‐Vis spectroscopy. FTIR analysis showed the uniform incorporation and conjugation of nickel magnetite (NM) into the chitosan (CS) polymer matrix. SEM showed that the average particle size was 0.5 μm. The TGA results revealed the good thermal stability of the prepared bio-composite at 300 °C. The point of zero charge was calculated as 7.5. The effect of water quality and process parameters, such as concentration of dyes, catalyst dose, solution pH, and temperatures, was investigated, for application purposes. The solar/CS-NM photocatalysis resulted in 99 and 96% degradation of individual MB and MR (C0 = 50 ppm), respectively, in 90 min. The degradation of MB and MR by solar/CS-NM photocatalysis followed pseudo-first-order kinetics, with observed rate constants (k) of 0.077 and 0.072 min−1, respectively. The CS-NM photocatalyst showed high recyclability, represented by only a 4–6% loss in the photocatalytic efficiency, after four cycles. The results showed that solar/CS-NM photocatalysis is an efficient technique for degrading recalcitrant organic pollutants, such as azo dyes, in water environments.

Designing, characterization, and evaluation of chitosan-zinc selenide nanoparticles for visible-light-induced degradation of tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes

Abstract:Employing dyes in different industrial sectors has produced a serious threat to the environment and living organisms of water bodies and land. For the decontamination of such toxic dyes, efforts have been made to develop an efficient, feasible, and low maintenance processes. In this context, chitosan-zinc selenide (CS-ZnSe) nanoparticles were prepared through chemical reduction method as the efficient photocatalysts for the decontamination of toxic dyes through photocatalysis. Photocatalyst's synthesis was confirmed with the help of FTIR spectroscopy. XRD indicated the hexagonal crystal structure of the CS-ZnSe with a crystallite size of 12 nm. SEM micrographs showed the average nano photocatalyst size as 25 nm. EDX analysis was employed to determine the elemental composition of the CS-ZnSe. An excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency for tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes was obtained using CS-ZnSe. The results showed a 98% and 97% degradation efficiency for tartrazine dye and sunset yellow (SY) dye at optimized conditions of time (3 h), pH (5), dye concentration (30 ppm), catalyst dosage (0.09 g and 0.01 g) , and at a temperature of 35 °C. Findings of the photocatalytic degradation process fitted well with first-order kinetics for both the dyes. Rate constant, 'K' value was found to be 0.001362 min-1 and 0.001257 min-1 for tartrazine and SY dyes, respectively. While value for (correlation coefficient, R2) was 0.99307 and 0.99277 for tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes, respectively. Recyclability of the photocatalyst was confirmed using it for consecutive cycles to degrade organic dyes. Results showed that the CH-ZnS possesses excellent efficiency in decontaminating organic dyes from industrial wastewater.
Comprehensive removal of various dyes by thiourea modified chitosan/nano ZnS composite via enhanced photocatalysis: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:Dyeing wastewater is a carcinogenic pollutant, which is widely known for its harmful effects on humans and marine organisms. In this study, a novel composite was prepared by blending thiourea modified chitosan with zinc sulfide nanoparticles (T-CS/ZnS) to comprehensively remove methyl orange (MO), rhodamine B (Rh B), and methylene blue (MB) effectively. Characterization results suggested that the synthesized composite has an irregular and rough surface that provided high specific surface area for adsorption process, while the strong optical response and low bandgap width contributed to the subsequent photocatalytic degradation of adsorbed dye molecules. Under optimum experimental conditions, the removal rates of MO, Rh B, and MB were 99.59 %, 99.49 %, and 91.04 %, respectively. Amino and hydroxyl groups provide electrons in photocatalytic reactions. The reaction process is consistent with the quasi-first-order kinetic model, and the material has good stability and regeneration potential. This study indicated that T-CS/ZnS composite is a highly effective material for the treatment of dyeing wastewaters.

Abstract:Biotreatment of wastewater has attracted considerable attention due to its low cost and eco-friendliness. This study developed a novel bionanocomposite comprised of Nanochitosan (NCS), Bentonite (Bt), and SnO 2 –ZnO nanocomposite prepared using Salvia officinalis extract as a reducing/stabilizing agent. The NCS/Bt/SnO 2 –ZnO bionanocomposite exhibited a rough surface with porous nature. EDX, XRD, and FTIR results confirmed the formation of the bionanocomposite. TGA indicated high thermal stability of the NCS/Bt/SnO 2 –ZnO. DRS results revealed that the bionanocomposite had a band gap of 2.60 eV. The surface area of NCS/Bt/SnO 2 –ZnO was found to be 32.54 m 2 g −1 with a 17.98 nm pore size. Adsorption of Fe(III) and Pb(II) ions and photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye using this bionanocomposite were studied. Under optimal conditions, the highest removal of Fe(III) (99.5%) and Pb(II) (91.5%) was achieved after 5 min and 40 min, respectively. The adsorption data fitted the Langmuir isotherm and indicated the removal capacity of 555.55 and 243.90 mgg −1 for Fe(III) and Pb(II), respectively. Also, the NCS/Bt/SnO 2 –ZnO showed the MB dye degradation efficiency of 99% within 30 min. Therefore, the NCS/Bt/SnO 2 –ZnO can be used as an environmentally friendly, cost-effective, thermally stable, and high-performance adsorbent/photocatalyst to remove heavy metal ions and dye molecules.

Sonophotocatalytic removal of organic dyes in real water environments using reusable BiSI@PVDF-HFP nanocomposite membranes

Abstract:Focusing on the uncontrolled discharge of organic dyes, a known threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems, this work employs a dual-functional catalyst approach, by immobilizing a synthesized bismuth sulfur iodide (BiSI) into a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymeric matrix for multifunctional water remediation. The resulting BiSI@PVDF nanocomposite membrane (NCM), with 20 wt% filler content, maintains a highly porous structure without compromising morphology or thermal properties. Demonstrating efficiency in natural pH conditions, the NCM removes nearly all Rhodamine B (RhB) within 1 h, using a combined sonophotocatalytic process. Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models describe the remediation process, achieving a maximum removal capacity (Qmax) of 72.2 mg/g. In addition, the combined sonophotocatalysis achieved a degradation rate ten and five times higher (0.026 min-1) than photocatalysis (0.002 min-1) and sonocatalysis (0.010 min-1). Furthermore, the NCM exhibits notable reusability over five cycles without efficiency losses and efficiencies always higher than 90%, highlighting its potential for real water matrices. The study underscores the suitability of BiSI@PVDF as a dual-functional catalyst for organic dye degradation, showcasing synergistic adsorption, photocatalysis, and sonocatalysis for water remediation.
Enhanced charge carriers separation/transportation via S-scheme ZnCeS–ZnWO heterostructure nanocomposite for photodegradation of synthetic dyes under sunlight

Abstract:Domestic wastage and liquid discharge from industries cause serious water pollution and severely damage the life cycle of living species. Therefore, it is necessary to construct efficient photocatalysts for the removal of toxic pollutants from water. Herein, a novel heterostructure ZnWO–ZnCeS nanocomposite was prepared by the sol-gel route and studied its physical and photocatalytic properties using various analytical techniques. Under sunlight irradiation, the ZnWO–ZnCeS photocatalyst eliminated 99.7, 99.1, 99.0 % rhodamine-B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and safranin-O (SO) dyes within 70 min with excellent performance higher than individual ZnWO and ZnCeS catalysts. The optimization tests exhibit the catalyst loading = 30 mg, dye content = 25 ppm, solution pH = 8 of ZnWO–ZnCeS against MB dye for practical application. The heterojunction of coupled ZnWO and ZnCeS leads to a synergistic effect that facilitates the charge transport and hampers the recombination of photo-induced charge carriers thereby leading to boosted photocatalytic performance. Furthermore, based on the scavenging test, the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals were the reactive species during the photodegradation reaction. The designed photodegradation reaction mechanism has proposed the formation of an S-scheme in ZnWO–ZnCeS that led to the accumulation of electrons at ZnCeS and holes at ZnWO, favoring the formation of reactive species for dye degradation. Moreover, this work provides a novel direction to synthesize S-scheme heterostructure photocatalysts for application in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Recently, semiconductor materials have attracted significant interest due to its remarkable catalytic activity. Heterogeneous catalysts play a crucial role in degrading organic dyes and their hazardous by-product, which threaten both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems when released into wastewater. In this study, we follow the co-precipitation technique to synthesize cobalt-ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) and nickel-ferrite (NiFe 2 O 4 ). Subsequently, produce five distinctive nanocomposite beads, decorated with chitosan: Chi-CoFe 2 O 4 − I, Chi-CoFe 2 O 4 − II, Chi-NiFe 2 O 4 − I, and Chi-NiFe 2 O 4 − II, all within an acidic aqueous environment. Different characterization was performed specially the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, to check the morphology of the synthesized beads. Most importantly, the synthesized novel beads were then utilized for the photo-degradation of Organic dyes, mostly used in industries, i.e., Eriochrome black T (EBT), and Congo red (CR). The remarkable results revealed a staggering 93% degradation of EBT dye after just 120 min under visible light exposure. Simultaneously, CR dye shows an impressive 93% degradation just within 120 min, through Chi-NiFe 2 O 4 − II. While, the TOF were 1257.5 kg −1 s −1 , 1287 kg −1 s −1 , 1318.18 kg −1 s −1 , 1363 kg −1 s −1 , and 1393 kg −1 s −1 . Furthermore, the turnover numbers were 2.26 × 10^7 kg −1 s −1 , 2.3 × 10^7 kg −1 s −1 , 2.37 × 10^7 kg −1 s −1 , 2.45 × 10^7 kg −1 s −1 , and 2.5 × 10^7 kg −1 s −1 for chitosan beads, Chi-CoFe 2 O 4 − I, Chi-CoFe 2 O 4 − II, Chi-NiFe 2 O 4 − I, and Chi-NiFe 2 O 4 − II respectively. This study shows the great potential of synthesized nanocomposite beads for degrading organic dyes from wastewater. This study will be a great addition to future environmental studies.

Calcaneal fractures: operative versus nonoperative treatment.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The purpose of this report is to compare the late results after operative and nonoperative treatment of intra-articular calcaneal fractures. METHODS From 1982 to 1992 we treated 250 calcaneal fractures of which 193 were intra-articular. Because of a change in operative indication, most fractures were treated nonoperatively before 1989 and operatively thereafter. Follow-up was possible at an average of 5.1 years for 124 intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Out of these, two groups of 33 nonoperatively and 30 operatively treated cases were formed matching each other with regard to prognostic parameters. Results were assessed by a clinical score considering pain, gait, footwear, and return to work. Pre- and postoperative tuber joint angle measurements were evaluated for their prognostic significance. RESULTS In this series of patients, the only statistically significant advantage of operative therapy was concerning return to work. There was no correlation between tuber joint angle and end results. Only when the extremes of the spectrum (nonoperative and operative cases with tuber joint angle < 0 degrees vs. > 25 degrees) were tested against each other was a significant advantage in the group with near normal joint angles found. Thus, open reduction and internal fixation of intra-articular calcaneal fractures can only be expected to benefit those patients with near anatomic reconstruction.
Development of Mn doped CeTe as an environmental purifier for photodegradation of noxious methylene blue dye in water

Abstract:Industrial chemicals like organic dyes are typically utilized in textiles to color things. These industries discard their effluent into the water without any prior treatment, endangering the ecosystem and aquatic life. However, different researchers investigated transition metals for the photodegradation of organic dyes to save aquatic lives. The rare transition metal chalcogenide has low photodegradation efficiency for organic dyes, and their performance is enhanced by doping of inner transition metals. In this study, the cerium telluride (CeTe) and Mn doped CeTe were fabricated with the simple hydrothermal method. Various spectroscopy and microscopy techniques are employed to determine the structural behavior of photocatalysts. The surface area study shows that Mn doped CeTe contains a specific surface area (SSA) of 76 m2 g−1 than CeTe (21 m2 g−1). The photocatalytic efficiency of CeTe and doped CeTe was determined with the photocatalytic destruction of MB dye. Their result shows that doped material exhibited a higher 96 % photodegradation rate than CeTe (85 %) at 120 min using visible light. The scavenger analysis exposed that the isopropanol has effectively suppressed the photodegradation of methylene blue up to 26 %. Our finding suggests that doped transition metal chalcogenide can act as a potential candidate for environmental purifiers to eliminate the toxic substances from water.

Abstract:Water pollution, arising from the presence of toxic dyes and chemicals, is a global challenge, urging the need for eco-friendly solutions in water decontamination. This study focused on the synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), and a bimetallic CuO-ZnO nanocomposite (CZ NC) through an environmentally friendly method employing Tragia involucrata L. leaf extract. Comprehensive analysis of structural and optical properties involved using various analytical techniques such as XRD, FT-IR, XPS, UV-DRS, PL, FE-SEM, EDAX, TEM, SAED, zeta potential, TGA, and BET. In comparison to pristine CuO and ZnO NPs, the CZ-NC demonstrated notably enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B dye (RhB). The optimum conditions for RhB degradation were found to be a pH of 9 and a catalyst dosage of 1 mg/mL for a concentration of 10 ppm. Under these conditions, CuO NPs, ZnO NPs, and CZ-NC demonstrated high efficiencies of 78%, 83%, and 96.1% respectively over 105 min. Through LC-HRMS, the identification of degradation products offered valuable insights into the pathway of photocatalytic degradation. Furthermore, toxicity analysis of intermediates, conducted through ECOSAR software, indicated the formation of non-toxic by-products (ChV/LC 50 /EC 50 > 100) after the completion of the reaction. Furthermore, the recycled catalysts exhibited sustained stability for up to 4 cycles, with only a minor decrease in activity of up to 6.8%. This confirms their catalytic efficacy in purifying polluted water. This research significantly contributes to the progress of environmentally friendly nanocomposites, enhancing their efficacy in the realm of environmental remediation.

Abstract:This study explores the effectiveness of Alginate-coated nano‑iron oxide combined with copper-based MOFs (Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4) composites for the sustainable and efficient removal of Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from wastewater through adsorption and photocatalysis. Utilizing various characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and TEM, we confirmed the optimal synthesis of this composite. The composites exhibit a significant surface area of approximately 160 m2 g-1, as revealed by BET analysis, resulting in an impressive adsorption capacity of 200 mg g-1 and a removal efficiency of 97 %. Moreover, their photocatalytic activity is highly effective, producing environmentally friendly degradation byproducts, thus underlining the sustainability of Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4 composites in dye removal applications. Our investigation delves into kinetics and thermodynamics, revealing a complex adsorption mechanism influenced by both chemisorption and physisorption. Notably, the adsorption kinetics indicate equilibrium attainment within 100 min across all initial concentrations, with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitting the data best (R2 ≈ 0.999). Furthermore, adsorption isotherm models, including Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich, elucidate the adsorption behavior, with the Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich models showing superior accuracy compared to the Langmuir model (R2 ≈ 0.98 and R2 ≈ 0.96, respectively). Additionally, thermodynamic analysis reveals a negative Gibbs free energy value (-6.40 kJ mol-1), indicating the spontaneity of the adsorption process, along with positive enthalpy (+24.3 kJ mol-1) and entropy (+82.06 kJ mol-1 K) values, suggesting an endothermic and disorderly process at the interface. Our comprehensive investigation provides insights into the optimal conditions for RhB adsorption onto Cu-BTC@Alg/Fe3O4 composites, highlighting their potential in wastewater treatment applications.

Abstract:Industrial wastewater containing different organic, inorganic, and biological components has become a major issue as far as the sustainable growth of society is concerned. The presence of organic dyes in the effluents causes several health issues for both human and aquatic life. Herein pristine inorganic nanocomposite consisting of g-C3N4 and MoS2 (1:1 wt%) have been synthesized by a facile calcination method for adsorptive removal of selective rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solutions. Different characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, XRD, BET, and Zeta potential have been studied to know the desired properties of the composite materials. The experiments were conducted by varying the dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH to investigate the optimum removal performance of RhB by the prepared composite material. The composite nanomaterial showed fast adsorption, achieving nearly 92.0% removal in the first 15 min which was much higher than individual bare nanomaterials. BET surface area of 41.59 m2/g, structural changes as shown in SEM and zeta potential (-19.03 mV) also support the probable causes for this fast removal. The highest adsorptive removal percentage of RhB was observed to be 97.1% in 90 min at a pH of 7 with 20 ppm initial RhB concentration, and 1.0 g/L adsorbent dosage for the engineered nanocomposite material. The synthesized composite displayed satisfactory reusability performance, achieving nearly 70% removal of contaminant after four cycles. The isotherm, kinetic, and thermodynamic studies were also performed to understand the adsorptive performance characteristics of the nanocomposite materials. The system satisfied the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9839) and second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9999) which may corroborate the chemisorption behavior with monolayer formation of RhB on the material. In addition, the thermodynamic study observed the endothermic nature and spontaneous reaction process of the system.

Abstract:In this study, mercaptosuccinic acid capped CdSe nanocrystals were successfully synthesized and used as photocatalyst for the effective removal of methylene blue (MB) inaqueous solution under visible light and sunlight irradiations including its analysis with statistical physics theory. Dye adsorption properties of these nanocrystals were investigated via experimental kinetics and equilibrium studies. These experimental data were modeled via the application of statistical physics theory to explain the corresponding adsorption mechanism and to characterize the steric and energetic parameters involved in the dye removal. A maximum adsorption capacity of 27.07 mg g-1 (80% of dye removal) was observed in 10 min using an initial concentration of 30 mg L-1. Statistical physics calculations indicated that the adsorption energy was lower than 40 kJ mol-1. It was also established that the dye adsorption was associated to the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding where dye aggregation and multi-molecular adsorption were expected. Overall, the dye removal was a spontaneous, feasible and exothermic. It was concluded that adsorption properties of CdSe-MSA nanocrystals improved the dye photo-catalytic degradation efficiency under visible light thus achieving up to 80% degradation efficiency in 60 min. The synergic effect of adsorption and photo-catalytic degradation performance was mainly due to the surface area (136.43 m2 g-1), small size (3.7 nm), and structural defects (selenium vacancies Se, interstitial of cadmium ICd) of CdSe nanocrystals, which enhanced both the response of these nanomaterials to visible light and their photo-catalytic activity. In summary, these nanocrystals are promising materials to be used in wastewater treatment under sunlight for the removal of organic compounds like dyes.

Abstract:To solve the problem of water pollution, using environment friendly and cost effective method in short time is the need of hour. In this work, chromium (Cr) and nitrogen (N) co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles were synthesized and were used for the photocatalytic degradation of dyes under visible light. The synergistic effect of metal and non-metal co-dopants added would result in appropriate reduction of band gap {from 3.2 eV of TiO2 to 2.67 eV}, decrease in recombination rate of charge carriers by trapping electrons and holes, and in better light harvesting capacity. Nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method and characterized using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and RAMAN spectroscopy. Eosin yellow (EY) and rose bengal (RB) were subjected to photocatalytic degradation under solar light to check the photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanoparticles. Effects of dye concentration, the concentration of nanoparticles, time, and pH were investigated to optimize the parameters. The results obtained were remarkable for 20 ppm EY solution took 10 min using 1 gL-1 NPs at pH 3 and 10 ppm RB solution took 5 min using 0.75 gL-1 NPs at pH 5.78 (original pH) for complete degradation. Kinetics studies were also performed and both dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with R2 values 0.99312 and 0.99712 for EY and RB, respectively. The study of degraded products was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) hyphenated with electron spray ionization mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS) (LC-MS) and possible degradation pathways were made for both dyes. A reusability test was also performed showing the efficiency of the particles was up to 88% after 3 cycles of use. These notable results can be attributed to the efficient removal of organic pollutants using the proposed dopants in this study.
