Abstract:Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) contained in sludge, such as carbamazepine, may be toxic to microorganisms and affect the biogenesis of methane during anaerobic digestion. In this study, different scales of anaerobic digesters were constructed to investigate the inhibitory effect of carbamazepine. Results showed that carbamazepine reduced methane production by 11.3 % and 62.1 % at concentrations of 0.4 and 2 mg/g TS, respectively. Carbamazepine hindered the dissolution of organic matter and the degradation of protein. Carbamazepine inhibited some fermentative bacteria, especially uncultured Aminicenantales , whose abundance decreased by 9.5–93.4 % under carbamazepine stress. It is worth noting that most prior studies investigated the effects of CECs only based on well-known microorganisms, ignoring the metabolisms of uncultured microorganisms. Genome-predicted metabolic potential suggested that 54 uncultured metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) associated with acidogenesis or acetogenesis. Therein, uncultured Aminicenantales related MAGs were proved to be acetogenic fermenters, their significant reduction may be an important reason for the decrease of methane production under carbamazepine stress. The toxicity of carbamazepine to microorganisms was mainly related to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species. This study elucidates the inhibition mechanism of carbamazepine and emphasizes the indispensable role of uncultured microorganisms in anaerobic digestion.

Abstract:The discharge of medical and domestic wastewater has resulted in increasing levels of pharmaceutical pollutants in water bodies. We combined dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) technology with an Fe3+/sodium sulfite oxidation system to address the limitations associated with traditional water treatment technologies in removing carbamazepine, exploring the application efficacy and mechanisms of this approach in carbamazepine degradation. Under optimized experimental conditions, our system achieved a 97% degradation efficiency for carbamazepine within 4 min, significantly outperforming both DBD and sodium sulfite standalone systems. Using response surface methodology to optimize experimental parameters, the effects of sodium sulfite concentration, pH, and Fe3+ concentration on degradation efficiency were assessed. Under optimal conditions, the system's degradation efficiency was 2.5 times higher than that of individual systems. Hydroxyl and sulfate radicals contributed 65% and 85%, respectively, to carbamazepine degradation, while superoxide radicals contributed only 30%. The study demonstrated that this system effectively breaks down the molecular structure of carbamazepine. Eight primary intermediate degradation products were identified, and, as degradation progressed, the concentrations of these intermediates gradually decreased, ultimately achieving a mineralization rate exceeding 85%. This study not only provides an effective technical solution for rapidly treating recalcitrant organic pollutants in water but also offers new insights for environmental protection and the sustainable use of water resources while providing theoretical and experimental data for future related research.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging technique presenting remarkable potential. In the current MFC, an electroactive biofilm anode was inoculated with activated sludge from a local municipal sewage treatment plant. The output voltage peaked at 0.60 V and 0.56 V in MFCs cultured with 2-chlorophenol (MFC-2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (MFC-2,4-DCP), respectively. The degradation and mineralization efficiency in MFC-2-CP were 100.0% and 82.0%, respectively. Based on the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, abundant Acinetobacter and Azospirillum existed during both the bioelectricity and biodegradation stages in MFC-2-CP, but different patterns were exhibited in MFC-2,4-DCP. The electrogenic bacteria relied on the electron transfer pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and terminal oxidase, while the electrons were transferred to the extracellular electrode by cytochrome C, riboflavin, degradation products of CPs and flagella. 2-CP and 2,4-DCP were biodegraded into less toxic cyclohexanol via dichlorination, hydroxylation, and hydrogenation; hereafter, the ring was opened to generate long-chain hydrocarbons, and finally mineralized into CO2 and H2O. This work provided a new strategy for MFCs in power generation and contaminant treatment.

Abstract:In this study, the attempt was made to enhance the degradation of the typical antibiotics, metronidazole (MNZ) by coupling three-electrode photocatalytic and microbial fuel cell systems (PMFC). The PMFC reactor was constructed, and the photocatalytic bioanode, attached with TiO 2 , was synthesized and characterized using SEM, EDS, XPS methods. The stability of microbial on bioanode was tested during acclimatization process. Electrochemical characteristics, including power density, CV and EIS curve, were analyzed to explore the advantage of power generation and higher electron transfer interaction in the PMFC. Compared with the traditional MFC system, the improved degradation and enhanced mineralization of MNZ were achieved, and the 1.30 and 1.24-fold increase in MNZ and TOC removal were realized, respectively. The three degradation pathways of MNZ were identified by LC-MS in the coupling PMFC, and the intermediates were more easily to further degrade and mineralize. The structure of the microbial community was demonstrated, and the functional species consisted of MNZ degradation bacteria, exoelectrogens, hydrocarbon removal bacterial, and nitrogen removal bacterial, were largely enriched in the PMFC, contributing to the improved electricity production, MNZ degradation and photoelectric effect. Moreover, the photoelectric played the selective role in the enrichment of functional microbial. The study provides a promising and environmentally approach for the treatment of containing antibiotics wastewater in the practical application.

Abstract:The use of nanomaterials to enhance bioprocessing for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has received increasing attention. Facing the increasing ecotoxicity effects of pharmaceuticals, carbamazepine was classified as medium to high-risk pollutants in wastewater treatment plant effluents and surface waters. However, the interactions between nanomaterials and microbial communities are unclear. This study reveals the potential and mechanism of synthesized octahedral molecular sieve and activated carbon fiber (OMS-2@ACF) composites in enhancing the aerobic microbial capacity of sequencing batch reactor (SBR) for the treatment of carbamazepine. In an SBR, a series doses of OMS-2@ACF at 0, 0.05, 0.25, and 1 g/L were introduced to the reactor to investigate their impact on the treatment of carbamazepine by activated sludge and recorded as S1, S2, S3, and S4, respectively. Furthermore, OMS-2@ACF demonstrated an enhancing effect on the carbamazepine removal performance, as the S4 reactor exhibited the most effective removal efficiencies between 67.8 % and 76.4 % of carbamazepine. Illumina high-throughput sequencing revealed that OMS-2@ACF material altered the composition of the microbial community in the SBR, identifying the Comamonas as the key genus contributing most significantly to the community response. Analysis indicated that the presence of OMS-2@ACF material increased metabolic pathways associated with contaminant degradation, resulting in improved treatment performance of the SBR. This study provides a promising method for the combination of nano-molecular sieve and activated carbon fiber during the pharmaceutical wastewater biotreatment process.

Abstract:Pharmaceutical wastes are considered to be important pollutants even at low concentrations. In this regard, carbamazepine has received significant attention due to its negative effect on both ecosystem and human health. However, the need for acidic conditions severely hinders the use of conventional Fenton reagent reactions for the control and elimination of carbamazepine in wastewater effluents and drinking water influents. Herein, we report of the synthesis and use of flexible bifunctional nanoelectrocatalytic textile materials, Fe3O4-NP@CNF, for the effective degradation and complete mineralization of carbamazepine in water. The nonwoven porous structure of the composite binder-free Fe3O4-NP@CNF textile is used to generate H2O2 on the carbon nanofiber (CNF) substrate by O2 reduction. In addition, ·OH radical is generated on the surface of the bonded Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) at low applied potentials (-0.345 V). The Fe3O4-NPs are covalently bonded to the CNF textile support with a high degree of dispersion throughout the fiber matrix. The dispersion of the nanosized catalysts results in a higher catalytic reactivity than existing electro-Fenton systems. For example, the newly synthesized Fe3O4-NPs system uses an Fe loading that is 2 orders of magnitude less than existing electro-Fenton systems, coupled with a current efficiency that is higher than electrolysis using a boron-doped diamond electrode. Our test results show that this process can remove carbamazepine with high pseudo-first-order rate constants (e.g., 6.85 h-1) and minimal energy consumption (0.239 kW·h/g carbamazepine). This combination leads to an efficient and sustainable electro-Fenton process.

Abstract:This study evaluated the feasibility of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for simultaneous electricity generation and degradation of phenolic compounds. The voltage generation was inhibited by 36.18-63.90%, but the degradation rate increased by 146.15-392.31% when the initial concentration of syringic acid (SA), vanillic acid (VA), and 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) increased from 0.3 to 3.0 g/L. The collaboration among the functional microbes significantly enhanced the degradation rate of parent compounds and their intermediates in MFCs systems, while the accumulated intermediates severely inhibited their complete mineralization in fermentative systems. High-throughput sequencing showed that the growth of fermentative bacteria prevailed, but electrogenic bacteria were inhibited in the anode microbial community (AMC) under high concentrations of phenolic compounds (3.0 g/L). These findings provide a better understanding of the dynamic shift and synergy effects of the AMC to evaluate its potential for the treatment of phenolic-containing wastewater.

Abstract:The present study focuses on the application of fungal-based microbial fuel cells (FMFC) for the degradation of organic pollutants including Acetaminophen (APAP), Para-aminophenol (PAP), Sulfanilamide (SFA), and finally Methylene Blue (MB). The objective is to investigate the patterns of degradation (both individually and as a mixture solution) of the four compounds in response to fungal metabolic processes, with an emphasis on evaluating the possibility of generating energy. Linear Sweep Voltammetry (LSV) has been used for electrochemical analysis of the targeted compounds on a Glassy Carbon Electrode (GCE). A dual chamber MFC has been applied wherein the cathodic compartment, the reduction reaction of oxygen was catalyzed by an elaborated biofilm of Trametes trogii, and the anodic chamber consists of a mixed solution of 200 mg L −1 APAP, PAP, MB, and SFA in 0.1 M PBS and an elaborated biofilm of Trichoderma harzianum . The obtained results showed that all the tested molecules were degraded over time by the Trichoderma harzianum . The biodegradation kinetics of all the tested molecules were found to be in the pseudo-first-order. The results of half-lives and the degradation rate reveal that APAP in its individual form degrades relatively slower (0.0213 h −1 ) and has a half-life of 33 h compared to its degradation in a mixed solution with a half-life of 20 h. SFA showed the longest half-life in the mixed condition (98 h) which is the opposite of its degradation as individual molecules (20 h) as the fastest molecule compared to other pollutants. The maximum power density of the developed MFC dropped from 0.65 mW m − 2 to 0.32 mW m − 2 after 45.5 h, showing that the decrease of the residual concentration of molecules in the anodic compartment leads to the decrease of the MFC performance.

Abstract:The Cu-Fe bimetallic composite carbon (CuFeO2@CR) was synthesized by using the waste cation exchange resins as the carbon source to degrade carbamazepine (CBZ) by activating peroxymonulfate (PMS). Results found that 91.3 % of CBZ was degraded under the optimal condition ([PMS] = 0.2 g/L, [CuFeO2@CR] = 0.3 g/L, T = 25degree celsius). CuFeO2@CR could efficiently degrade CBZ at pH 3.03-9.02 and maintain the degradation at 83.6 % in the fifth cycle. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) were SO4 center dot-, center dot OH, and O-1(2) with the relative contribution of 35 %, 29 %, and 36 %, respectively. DFT calculation demonstrated that CuFeO2@CR exhibited a preferential affinity for PMS and greater transfer electrons capacity than CR. Three reaction pathways were proposed in the CuFeO2@CR/PMS system, and the degradation could effectively reduce the toxicity into non-toxic. The continuous flow catalytic experiment indicated the promising application in the treatment of antibiotic wastewater. This work provides guidance and theoretical support for CBZ degradation mechanisms.
Enhanced chloramphenicol-degrading biofilm formation in microbial fuel cells through a novel synchronous acclimation strategy

Abstract:A novel synchronous acclimation strategy involving the continuous addition of sludge with chloramphenicol (CAP) was established to significantly enhance the formation of a highly efficient CAP-degrading anode biofilm in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The highest power density of 414.00 mW/m2 and CAP-tolerant concentration of 80 mg/L were obtained from the synchronous MFC, which were 2.05 and 1.67 times higher than those from the control MFC, respectively. The unique loose and porous biofilm with high permeability and cell viability supported by interwoven cobweb-shaped proteins facilitated mass and electron transfer, primarily leading to the improvements. Additionally, more bi-functional bacteria for electricity generation and CAP degradation (e.g., Pseudomonas and Enterococcus) were specifically selected, and more beneficial mutualism occurred among the microbes in the biofilm during the synchronous acclimation process. This study provides a possibility to improve the long-term operation efficiency of antibiotic-degrading electrode biofilms for bioelectrochemical technology through the use of a simple and efficient acclimation strategy.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology which has been immensely investigated for wastewater treatment along with electricity generation. In the present study, the treatment efficiency of MFC was investigated for hydrocarbon containing wastewater by optimizing various parameters of MFC. Mediator-less MFC (1·2 l) was constructed, and its performance was compared with mediated MFC with Escherichia coli as a biocatalyst. MFC with electrode having biofilm proved to be better compared with MFC inoculated with suspended cells. Analysis of increasing surface area of electrode by increasing their numbers indicated increase in COD reduction from 55 to 75%. Catholyte volume was optimized to be 750 ml. Sodium benzoate (0·721 g l-1 ) and actual common effluent treatment plant (CETP) wastewater as anolyte produced 0·8 and 0·6 V voltage and 89 and 50% COD reduction, respectively, when a novel consortium of four bacterial strains were used. Twenty MFC systems with the developed consortium when electrically connected in series-parallel connection were able to generate 2·3 V and 0·5 mA current. This is the first report demonstrating the application of CETP wastewater in the MFC system, which shows potential of the system towards degradation of complex organic components present in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Manganese ore substrate up-flow microbial fuel cell constructed wetland (UCW-MFC(Mn)) as an innovative wastewater treatment technology for purifying antibiotics and electricity generation with few antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) generation has attracted attention. However, antibiotic purifying effects should be further enhanced. In this study, a biofilm electrode reactor (BER) that needs direct current driving was powered by a Mn ore anode (UCW-MFC(Mn)) to form a coupled system without requiring direct-current source. Removal efficiencies of sulfadiazine (SDZ), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and the corresponding ARGs in the coupled system were compared with composite (BER was powered by direct-current source) and anaerobic systems (both of BER and UCW-MFC were in open circuit mode). The result showed that higher antibiotic removal efficiency (94% for SDZ and 99.1% for CIP) in the coupled system was achieved than the anaerobic system (88.5% for SDZ and 98.2% for CIP). Moreover, electrical stimulation reduced antibiotic selective pressure and horizontal gene transfer potential in BER, and UCW-MFC further reduced ARG abundances by strengthening the electro-adsorption of ARG hosts determined by Network analysis. Bacterial community diversity continuously decreased in BER while it increased in UCW-MFC, indicating that BER mitigated the toxicity of antibiotic. Degree of modularity, some functional bacteria (antibiotic degrading bacteria, fermentative bacteria and EAB), and P450 enzyme related to antibiotic and xenobiotics biodegradation genes were enriched in electric field existing UCW-MFC, accounting for the higher degradation efficiency. In conclusion, this study provided an effective strategy for removing antibiotics and ARGs in wastewater by operating a BER-UCW-MFC coupled system.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) can obtain electrical energy from extensive organic matter and complete wastewater treatment at the same time. The principal purpose of the research is to find a solution to the biodegradation of X-3B in a double tube MFC with graphite fiber brush as the anode and carbon cloth as the cathode. The anaerobic, aerobic, and electrochemical processes in the MFC were investigated. The effects of dye concentration and circuit connectivity on the performances of MFCs were explored. The degradation efficiency of X-3B in the anode region (85.56%) was higher than that in the cathode region (14.16%) within 24 h under the optimal voltage of 0.43 V, indicating a synergistic effect between electrode reaction and biodegradation. The power density increased from 12.12 mW/m3 to 60.45 mW/m3 with the addition of X-3B from 50 to 200 mg/L, because of the reduced ohmic and polarization resistance. Intermediate productions such as aniline were manufactured with the conjugated double bond of X-3B broken, and the intermediates were degraded into small molecular products like phenol during further degradation processes. Moreover, dye concentration and circuit connection had significant effects on the relative abundance of the microbial community at phylum and genus levels. In general, MFC is a good approach to energy generation and azo dye treatment at the same time.

Abstract:Due to environmental persistence and biotoxicity of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), it is urgent to develop potential technologies to remediate PBDEs. Introducing electrodes for microbial electricity generation to stimulate the anaerobic degradation of organic pollutants is highly promising for bioremediation. However, it is still not clear whether the degradation of PBDEs could be promoted by this strategy. In this study, we hypothesized that the degradation of PBDEs (e. g., BDE-209) would be enhanced under microbial electricity generation condition. The functional compositions and structures of microbial communities in closed-circuit microbial fuel cell (c-MFC) and open-circuit microbial fuel cell (o-MFC) systems for BDE-209 degradation were detected by a comprehensive functional gene array, GeoChip 4.0, and linked with PBDE degradations. The results indicated that distinctly different microbial community structures were formed between c-MFCs and o-MFCs, and that lower concentrations of BDE-209 and the resulting lower brominated PBDE products were detected in c-MFCs after 70-day performance. The diversity and abundance of a variety of functional genes in c-MFCs were significantly higher than those in o-MFCs. Most genes involved in chlorinated solvent reductive dechlorination, hydroxylation, methoxylation and aromatic hydrocarbon degradation were highly enriched in c-MFCs and significantly positively correlated with the removal of PBDEs. Various other microbial functional genes for carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycling, as well as energy transformation process, were also significantly increased in c-MFCs. Together, these results suggest that PBDE degradation could be enhanced by introducing the electrodes for microbial electricity generation and by specifically stimulating microbial functional genes.

Abstract:In this study, nickel–cobalt co-modified stainless steel mesh (Ni-Co@SSM) was prepared and used as the biocathode in microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) for sulfamethazine (SMT) degradation. The optimal electrochemical performance of the Ni-Co@SSM was obtained at the electrodeposition time of 600 s, electrodeposition current density of 20 mA cm−2, and nickel–cobalt molar ratio of 1:2. The removal of SMT in MEC with the Ni-Co@SSM biocathode (MEC-Ni-Co@SSM) was 82%, which increased by 30% compared with the conventional anaerobic reactor. Thirteen intermediates were identified and the potential degradation pathways of SMT were proposed. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Patescibacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, and Euryarchaeota are the dominant bacteria at the phylum level in the MEC-Ni-Co@SSM, which are responsible for SMT metabolism. Due to the electrical stimulation, there was an increase in the abundance of the metabolic function and the genetic information processing. This work provides valuable insight into utilizing MECs for effective treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Abstract:A rectangular double chamber with trivalent arsenic as the electron donor of the biological anode was constructed by microbial fuel cells (MFC), and the feasibility of the MFC simultaneous degradation of trivalent arsenic and nitrate was studied. Experimental results show that the co-matrix-coupled MFC reactor oxidizes trivalent arsenic in an anode chamber and degrades nitrate in the cathode chamber. The removal rate of trivalent arsenic is about 63.35%, and the degradation rate of nitrate is about 55.95% during the complete and stable operation period. MFC can continuously output electric energy, and the maximum output voltage is 388 mV. We compared and analyzed the main functional microflora of biofilm microorganisms in an anode chamber. In the long-term arsenic-polluted environment, the activity of Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas bacteria with arsenic resistance, was improved. It is inferred that a fraction of trivalent arsenic was oxidized to pentavalent arsenic by electrode-attached microorganisms. While remaining trivalent, arsenic was taken up by the suspended bacterial biomass and converted into stable arsenide. The results of this study have theoretical reference value for the expansion of the MFC application scope.

Abstract:Carbamazepine is an emerging contaminant and resistant to biodegradation, which cannot be effectively removed by the conventional biological wastewater treatment processes. In this study, the combined gamma irradiation and biodegradation was employed to remove carbamazepine from wastewater. The effect of dose on the removal of carbamazepine was studied at different doses (300, 600 and 800Gy). The results showed that the removal efficiency of carbamazepine increased with dose increasing during the irradiation process. The maximum removal efficiency was 99.8% at 800Gy, while the removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was only 26.5%. The removal efficiency of TOC increased to 79.3% after the sequent biological treatment. In addition, several intermediates and organic acids were detected. The possible degradation pathway of carbamazepine during the integrated irradiation and biodegradation was proposed. Based on the overall analysis, the combined gamma irradiation and biological treatment process can be an alternative for removing the recalcitrant organic pollutants such as carbamazepine from wastewater.

Abstract:A modified nickel-foam (Ni-FM) cathode coated with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Ni-FM/CNTs) was synthesized for carbamazepine (CBZ) highly energy-efficient degradation in penetrating electro-Fenton. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD) test proves that multi-walled CNTs were successfully coated on the surface of nickel foam. The linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) results revealed the greater electrochemical activity of Ni-FM/CNTs compared to Ni-FM. The H2O2 accumulation performance tests showed that NiFM/CNTs cathode had higher H2O2 accumulation performance than Ni-FM cathode, and the H2O2 yield of NiFM/CNTs was 5.7 times higher than that of Ni-FM after 1 h of electrolysis. The reaction rate of CBZ degradation in penetrating electro-Fenton process was 2.5 times that of planar electro-Fenton process because the flowthrough process enhanced O2 mass transfer and promoted the production of H2O2. The Box-Behnken Design response surface method was used to analyze the factors affecting the degradation efficiency of CBZ in the penetrating electro-Fenton process. The CBZ degradation efficiency could reach 100%, and electric energy consumption was 0.4356 Wh/L at current density of 9 mA/cm2, pH = 3, concentration of Fe2+ was 0.3 mM, and the through-flow velocity of 60 mL/min. The quenching experiment and EPR test results confirmed the degradation of CBZ was mainly the oxidation of & BULL;OH, and O2- & BULL;is the prerequisite for the production of & BULL;OH. Eight possible degradation products of CBZ degradation were identified and the probable degradation route was proposed. The ECOSAR program was used to predict the toxicities of CBZ and its degradation products, and the consequences revealed that the electro-Fenton process has a detoxification effect on CBZ, but may also produce more toxic organic compounds than the parent compound.

Abstract:As a novel electrochemical apparatus for synchronous electricity generation and decontamination, microbial fuel cell (MFC) provides a way to effectively deal with the refractory pollutant. A new method of electricity production by anodic biogas slurry coupling with cathodic triphenyltin chloride degradation was proposed based on the cathodic "Fenton" reaction in a typical dual-chamber MFC. The results showed that the maximum voltage was 50.32% higher and the stable time of the voltage was 2 times longer after biofilms domestication. In the end of the operation, the removal efficiency of COD, Total N and Total P of the biogas slurry were 85.35%±1.53%, 59.20%±5.24% and 44.98%±3.57%, respectively. Besides, the triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) degradation efficiency decreased with increasing initial concentration. In addition, when 100 μmol·L?1 TPTC was added to the cathodic chamber, the highest output voltage and the maximum power density of the MFC arrived at 280.2 mV and 145.62 mW·m?2, respectively. TPTC was removed after 14 d with the degradation of 91.88% and a rate of about 0.273 μmol·L?1·h?1. This study provided the foundational supports for simultaneously decomposing anodic organic effluent and cathodic organic pollution by MFC.
