Abstract:Nanopesticides are considered to be a promising alternative strategy for enhancing bioactivity and delaying the development of pathogen resistance to pesticides. Here, a new type of nanosilica fungicide was proposed and demonstrated to control late blight by inducing intracellular peroxidation damage to Phytophthora infestans, the pathogen associated with potato late blight. Results indicated that the structural features of different silica nanoparticles were largely responsible for their antimicrobial activities. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) exhibited the highest antimicrobial activity with a 98.02% inhibition rate of P. infestans, causing oxidative stress responses and cell structure damage in P. infestans. For the first time, MSNs were found to selectively induce spontaneous excess production of intracellular reactive oxygen species in pathogenic cells, including hydroxyl radicals (•OH), superoxide radicals (•O2-), and singlet oxygen (1O2), leading to peroxidation damage in P. infestans. The effectiveness of MSNs was further tested in the pot experiments as well as leaf and tuber infection, and successful control of potato late blight was achieved with high plant compatibility and safety. This work provides new insights into the antimicrobial mechanism of nanosilica and highlights the use of nanoparticles for controlling late blight with green and highly efficient nanofungicides.
Zinc oxide and copper oxide nanoparticles as a potential solution for controlling Phytophthora infestans, the late blight disease of potatoes

Abstract:Late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans, is a major potato disease globally, leading to significant economic losses of $6.7 billion. To address this issue, we evaluated the antifungal activity of ZnO and CuO nanoparticles (NPs) against P. infestans for the first time in laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Nanoparticles were synthesized via a chemical precipitation method and characterized using various techniques. The XRD results revealed that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles had a pure hexagonal wurtzite crystalline structure, whereas the CuO NPs had a monoclinic crystalline structure. TEM images confirmed the synthesis of quasi-spherical nanoparticles with an average size of 11.5 nm for ZnO NPs and 24.5 nm for CuO NPs. The UV-Vis Spectral Report showed peaks corresponding to ZnO NPs at 364 nm and 252 nm for CuO NPs.In an in vitro study, both ZnO and CuO NPs significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited the radial growth of P. infestans at all tested concentrations compared to the untreated control. The highest inhibitory effect of 100% was observed with ZnO and CuO NPs at 30 mg/L. A lower inhibition of 60.4% was observed with 10 mg/L CuO NPs. Under greenhouse conditions, 100 mg/L ZnO NPs was the most effective treatment for controlling potato late blight, with an efficacy of 71%. CuO NPs at 100 mg/L followed closely, with an efficacy of 69%. Based on these results, ZnO and CuO NPs are recommended as promising eco-friendly fungicides for the management and control of potato late blight after further research.

Abstract:Potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans is a devastating disease worldwide. Unlike other plant pathogens, double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) is poorly taken up by P. infestans , which is a key obstacle in using dsRNA for disease control. Here, a self-assembled multicomponent nano-bioprotectant for potato late blight management is designed based on dsRNA and a plant elicitor. Nanotechnology overcomes the dsRNA delivery bottleneck for P. infestans and extends the RNAi protective window. The protective effect of nano-enabled dsRNA against infection arises from a synergistic mechanism that bolsters the stability of dsRNA and optimizes its effective intracellular delivery. Additionally, the nano-enabled elicitor enhances endocytosis and amplifies the systemic defense response of the plants. Co-delivery of dsRNA and an elicitor provides a protective effect via the two aspects of pathogen inhibition and elevated plant defense mechanisms. The multicomponent nano-bioprotectant exhibits superior control efficacy compared to a commercial synthetic pesticide in field conditions. This work proposes an eco-friendly strategy to manage devastating plant diseases and pests.

Abstract:Background: Phytophthora infestans is a late blight-causing oomycetes pathogen. It rapidly evolves and adapts to the host background and new fungicide molecules within a few years of their release, most likely because of the predominance of transposable elements in its genome. Frequent applications of fungicides cause environmental concerns. Here, we developed target-specific RNA interference (RNAi)-based molecules, along with nanoclay carriers, that when sprayed on plants are capable of effectively reducing late blight infection. Results: Targeted the genes unique to sporulation, early satge infection and the metabolism pathway stages based on in an our own microarray data. We used nanoclay as a carrier for sorbitol dehydrogenase, heat shock protein 90, translation elongation factor 1-α, phospholipase-D like 3 and glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored acidic serine-threonine-rich HAM34-like protein double-stranded (ds)RNAs, which were assessed by culture bioassay, detached leaf assay and spray methods, and revealed a reduction in growth, sporulation and symptom expression. Plants sprayed with multigene targeted dsRNA-nanoclay showed enhanced disease resistance (4% disease severity) and less sporulation (<1 × 103 ) compared with plants sprayed with dsRNA alone. Conclusion: The use of nanoclay with multigene targeted dsRNA was assumed to be involved in effective delivery, protection and boosting the action of RNAi as a spray-induced gene silencing approach (SIGS). A significant reduction in growth, sporulation, disease severity and decreased gene expression authenticates the effects of SIGS on late blight progression. This study demonstrated as a proof of concept the dsRNA-nanoclay SIGS approach, which could be used as an alternative to chemical fungicides and transgenic approaches to develop an environmentally friendly novel plant protection strategy for late blight. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:The biosynthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) offers great potential for plant disease management due to their potent antimicrobial properties and environmental safety. However, the precise mechanisms underlying their antifungal mode of action and role in suppressing mycotoxins remain unclear. This study aims to elucidate the mechanisms by which ZnONPs suppress the pathogenic fungus Fusarium graminearium, known to cause Fusarium head blight in wheat. Additionally, it investigates how ZnONPs mitigate the production of mycotoxins, which pose risks to humans and ruminants. The study demonstrates that ZnONPs, bioproduced by Pseudomonas poae (P. poae), inhibit not only fungal growth, colony formation, and spore germination, but also significantly reduce mycotoxin production of F. graminearium by inhibiting the synthesis of deoxynivalenol (DON), downregulating the FgTRI gene, and causing morphological alterations of the toxisomes. The results also highlight that ZnONPs exert significant effects on fungi through multiple mechanisms, including cell wall damage and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, ZnONPs effectively inhibit F. graminearium in wheat leaves and coleoptiles. Fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical microscopy all show that ZnONPs stop F. graminearium from getting into wheat plants and colonising them. Overall, the findings of this study provide evidence that ZnONPs are highly effective in reducing F. graminearium colonization in wheat plants and effectively decreasing mycotoxin production through multiple pathways.

Abstract:Phytophthora infestans is the most devastating pathogen of potato. Considering the increasing demand for reducing inputs of synthetic and copper-based fungicides, and regarding the emergence of novel fungicide-resistant strains, alternative control methods are a necessity. The present review describes the features of P. infestans that make it such a daunting challenge to agriculture and summarizes the current literature regarding the biocontrol of the phytopathogenic P. infestans using antagonistic microorganisms. Several studies report the evaluation of Trichoderma harzianum , Chaetomium globosum , Trichoderma viride , yeasts, and bacteria from the genera Bacillus , Pseudomonas , and Xenorhabdus as biocontrol agents in the management of potato late blight disease. Overall, the results confirmed that some biosurfactants (such as surfactin and fengycin B) produced by isolates of Bacillus and Pseudomonas bacteria have a high efficiency effect to control the sporulation and release of P. infestans zoospores reaching a rate of 100%. Besides bacterial compounds, the combination of biological control agents with each other with compost or copper at low dose was very promising in the effective control of P. infestans.

Abstract:Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli are seed-borne rice pathogens that cause bacterial panicle blight (BPB) disease, resulting in huge rice yield losses worldwide. However, the excessive use of chemical pesticides in agriculture has led to an increase in environmental toxicity. Microbe-mediated nanoparticles (NPs) have recently gained significant attention owing to their promising application in plant disease control. In the current study, we biologically synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) from a native Bacillus cereus RNT6 strain, which was taxonomically identified using 16S rRNA gene analysis. The biosynthesis of ZnONPs in the reaction mixture was confirmed by using UV–Vis spectroscopy. Moreover, XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, and TEM analysis revealed the functional groups, crystalline nature, and spherical shape of ZnONPs with sizes ranging from 21 to 35 nm, respectively. Biogenic ZnONPs showed significant antibacterial activity at 50 µg mL−1 against B. glumae and B. gladioli with a 2.83 cm and 2.18 cm zone of inhibition, respectively, while cell numbers (measured by OD600) of the two pathogens in broth culture were reduced by 71.2% and 68.1%, respectively. The ultrastructure studies revealed the morphological damage in ZnONPs-treated B. glumae and B. gladioli cells as compared to the corresponding control. The results of this study revealed that ZnONPs could be considered as promising nanopesticides to control BPB disease in rice.

Abstract:BACKGROUND In order to address the challenges of food security for the ever-increasing population, the emergent of nanotechnology is an alternate technology of choice which recently accounts for the production of safer pesticides and as a substitute for conventional fertilizer. The antidrug resistance of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and build-up of chemicals in the environment has made it necessary to find alternate safe measures that are effective in diseases management. Hence, in this study, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) was green synthesized by Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. flower extract. RESULTS The characterization of CuONPs using UV - Vis spectrophotometer, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with Energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) ascertained the presence of CuONPs which were nanorods of 28.1 nm. CuONPs significantly obstructed growth and biofilm development of Xoo by 79.65 and 79.17 % respectively. Antibacterial mechanism of CuONPs was found to be as a result of wounding cell membrane, hence, giving rise to exodus of intracellular content and generation of oxidative reactive oxygen species which invariably, inhibited Xoo respiration and growth. The toxicity study under greenhouse conditions revealed that CuONPs significantly increased growth variables and biomass of rice and reduced bacterial leaf blight. Application of CuONPs on Arabidopsis improved the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters; the ΦPSII was significantly increased by 152.05 % in comparison to control. CONCLUSION Altogether, this result suggests that CuONPs in low concentration (200.0 μg/ml) are not toxic to plants and can serve as nano-fertilizers and nano-pesticides. Abstract:Plant diseases are caused by various pathogenic microorganisms, leading to substantial economic losses and food insecurity worldwide. However, the extensive use of chemical-based nanopesticides has adverse effects on plants, soil, and environmental systems. There is increasing interest in developing eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives to manage plant diseases. Recently, microbe-mediated nanoparticles (NPs) as nanopesticides have attracted the interest of cultivators, specifically in plant disease management, compared to traditional physical and chemical approaches. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art formulations of nanopesticides by using microorganisms against bacterial and fungal phytopathogens. The article discusses the various mechanisms through which these microbes contribute to the enhanced effectiveness of NPs, including the production of bioactive compounds, improved nanoparticle synthesis, and the facilitation of targeted delivery. The review also highlights the advantages of using microbe-mediated nanopesticides, such as reduced environmental toxicity, increased biodegradability, and the potential to manage pesticide-resistant pathogens. Overall, the use of microbe-mediated NPs is an inexpensive, reliable, and eco-friendly approach for plant disease management.
The association between daytime attendance and out-of-hours frequent attendance among adult patients in general practice.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Frequent attenders (FAs) account for a large proportion of daytime consultations in general practice. However, no studies have so far been conducted to establish whether daytime FAs are also out-of-hours FAs. AIM To analyse the association between daytime attendance and out-of-hours frequent attendance. DESIGN OF STUDY A registry-based study of individual face-to-face contacts with general practice during daytime and out of hours, based on National Health Insurance files. SETTING General practices in Aarhus County, Denmark (630,000 inhabitants). METHOD A total of 416,172 adults, i.e. all adults registered with a general practice during a 12-month period from November 1997 to October 1998 were included. Odds ratios (OR) for frequent attendance out of hours were stratified for age, sex, and frequency of contacts during daytime were calculated. RESULTS A strong association was observed between daytime level of attendance and out-of-hours level of attendance (OR = 2.9-6.3 among patients with low daytime attendance, OR = 33.7-99.8 among daytime FAs). Daytime FAs accounted for one-third of the daytime contacts, one-third of the out-of-hours contacts, and 42% of out-of-hours FAs. More than half of the daytime FAs did not attend out of hours. Two per cent of the out-of-hours FAs had no contacts during the daytime. CONCLUSION Frequent attendance in daytime was very strongly associated with frequent attendance out of hours, and daytime FAs accounted for a large proportion of all contacts with general practice.

Abstract:The present work mechanistically addressed the problem of arsenic (As) contamination in agricultural soils by using locally isolated Bacillus sp. strain ZH16 and biogenic molybdenum nanoparticles (MoNPs) simultaneously for the first time. The interactions of MoNPs with strain ZH16 and ZH16-inoculated wheat plants were examined under As non-spiked and spiked conditions. The biogenic MoNPs showed efficient biocompatibility with strain ZH16 by promoting indole-3-acetic acid synthesis, phosphate solubilization and ACC deaminase activity without and with As stress. The results from greenhouse experiment revealed that co-application of biogenic MoNPs and bacterial strain ZH16 significantly promoted the morphological parameters, nutrients content and ionic balance of wheat plants under normal and As spiked conditions. Furthermore, combining the bacterial strain ZH16 with biogenic MoNPs dramatically reduced As translocation in plants (30.3%) as compared to ZH16-inoculated wheat plants. Conclusively, our results elucidate the importance of synergistic application of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biogenic MoNPs to counteract global food safety issues in a sustainable manner. The biogenic NPs could serve as stabilizing agent for PGPR by facilitating their colonization in plant holobiont regardless of environmental conditions. These novel advancements will provide new insights into nano-oriented PGPR research in the agricultural sector.

Abstract:Late blight (LB), caused by the oomycete pathogen Phytophthora infestans , is a devastating disease of potato that is necessary to control by regularly treatment with fungicides. Silicon (Si) has been used to enhance plant resistance against a broad range of bacterial and fungal pathogens; however, the enhanced LB resistance and the molecular mechanisms involving the plant hormone pathways remain unclear. In this study, Si treatment of potato plants was found to enhance LB resistance in both detached leaves and living plants accompanied by induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and pathogenesis-related genes expression. Regarding the hormone pathways involved in Si-mediated LB resistance, we found a rapidly increased content of ethylene (ET) 15 min after spraying with Si. Increased jasmonic acid (JA) and JA-Ile and decreased salicylic acid (SA) were identified in plants at 1 day after spraying with Si and an additional 1 day after P. infestans EC1 infection. Furthermore, pretreatment with Me-JA enhanced resistance to EC1, while pretreatment with DIECA, an inhibitor of JA synthesis, enhanced the susceptibility and attenuated the Si-mediated resistance to LB. Consistent with these hormonal alterations, Si-mediated LB resistance was significantly attenuated in StETR1 -, StEIN2 -, StAOS -, StOPR3 -, StNPR1 -, and StHSP90- repressed plants but not in StCOI1- and StSID2- repressed plants using virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS). The Si-mediated accumulation of JA/JA-Ile was significantly attenuated in StETR1 -, StEIN2 -, StOPR3- and StHSP90 - VIGS plants but not in StCOI1 -, StSID2- and StNPR1-VIGS plants. Overall, we reveal that Si can be used as a putative alternative to fungicides to control LB, and conclude that Si-mediated LB resistance is dependent on the ET/JA-signaling pathways in a StHSP90- and StNPR1- dependent manner.

Abstract:Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using endophytic bacteria is a safe alternative to the traditional chemical method. The purpose of this research is to biosynthesize AgNPs using endophytic bacterium Bacillus endophyticus strain H3 isolated from onion. The biosynthesized AgNPs with sizes from 4.17 to 26.9 nm were confirmed and characterized by various physicochemical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in addition to an energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) profile. The biosynthesized AgNPs at a concentration of 40 mu g/mL had a strong antifungal activity against rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae with an inhibition rate of 88% in mycelial diameter. Moreover, the biosynthesized AgNPs significantly inhibited spore germination and appressorium formation of M. oryzae. Additionally, microscopic observation showed that mycelia morphology was swollen and abnormal when dealing with AgNPs. Overall, the current study revealed that AgNPs could protect rice plants against fungal infections.

Abstract:Controlled fungicide delivery in response to the specific microenvironment produced by fungal pathogens is an advisable strategy to improve the efficacy of fungicides. Herein, the authors construct a smart fungicide nanoplatform, using mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as nanocarriers loaded with eugenol (EU) and Ag+ coordinated polydopamine (Ag+ -PDA) as a coating to form Ag+ -PDA@MSNs-EU NPs for Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea) control. As a botanical fungicide, EU offers an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fungicides and can upregulate several defense-related genes in the tomato plant. The Ag+ -PDA coating can lock the EU inside the nanocarriers and respond to the oxalic acid produced by B. cinerea to corelease the loaded EU and Ag+ . The results demonstrate that Ag+ -PDA@MSNs-EU NPs can effectively inhibit the mycelial growth of B. cinerea on detached and potted tomato leaves. The construction of such a smart fungicide nanoplatform provides new guidance to design controlled fungicides release systems, which can respond to the microenvironment associated with plant pathogen to realize fungus control.

Abstract:Xenorhabdus nematophilus (three strains), Xenorhabdus bovienii (one strain), and Photorhabdus luminescens (one strain) showed both exo- and endochitinase activity using p-nitrophenyl-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminide and p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-N,N',N'-triacetylchitotriose, respectively, as substrates. One to three bands were detected on PAGE gel with glycol chitin after electrophoresis. Variation in exo- and endochitinase activity among different species and strains was detected with the strongest activity in X. nematophilus and the weakest in P. luminescens. The primary form of X. bovienii had significantly greater chitinase activity than the secondary form, whereas their growth rate and total protein released into culture medium were similar. The partially purified chitinase of X. bovienii showed significant antimycotic activity against conidial germination and germ tube elongation of Botrytis cinerea.
Silica nanoparticles protect rice against biotic and abiotic stresses

Abstract:Abstract Background By 2050, the world population will increase to 10 billion which urged global demand for food production to double. Plant disease and land drought will make the situation more dire, and safer and environment-friendly materials are thus considered as a new countermeasure. The rice blast fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae , causes one of the most destructive diseases of cultivated rice worldwide that seriously threatens rice production. Unfortunately, traditional breeding nor chemical approaches along control it well. Nowadays, nanotechnology stands as a new weapon against these mounting challenges and silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) have been considered as potential new safer agrochemicals recently but the systematically studies remain limited, especially in rice. Results Salicylic acid (SA) is a key plant hormone essential for establishing plant resistance to several pathogens and its further affected a special form of induced resistance, the systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which considered as an important aspect of plant innate immunity from the locally induced disease resistance to the whole plant. Here we showed that SiO 2 NPs could stimulate plant immunity to protect rice against M. oryzae through foliar treatment that significantly decreased disease severity by nearly 70% within an appropriate concentration range. Excessive concentration of foliar treatment led to disordered intake and abnormal SA responsive genes expressions which weaken the plant resistance and even aggravated the disease. Importantly, this SA-dependent fungal resistance could achieve better results with root treatment through a SAR manner with no phytotoxicity since the orderly and moderate absorption. What’s more, root treatment with SiO 2 NPs could also promote root development which was better to deal with drought. Conclusions Taken together, our findings not only revealed SiO 2 NPs as a potential effective and safe strategy to protect rice against biotic and abiotic stresses, but also identify root treatment for the appropriate application method since it seems not causing negative effects and even have promotion on root development. Abstract:About 45% of the world’s fruit and vegetables are wasted, resulting in postharvest losses and contributing to economic losses ranging from $10 billion to $100 billion worldwide. Soft rot disease caused by Rhizopus stolonifer leads to postharvest storage losses of sweet potatoes. Nanoscience stands as a new tool in our arsenal against these mounting challenges that will restrict efforts to achieve and maintain global food security. In this study, three nanomaterials (NMs) namely C60, CuO, and TiO2 were evaluated for their potential application in the restriction of Rhizopus soft rot disease in two cultivars of sweet potato (Y25, J26). CuO NM exhibited a better antifungal effect than C60 and TiO2 NMs. The contents of three important hormones, indolepropionic acid (IPA), gibberellic acid 3 (GA-3), and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) in the infected J26 sweet potato treated with 50 mg/L CuO NM were significantly higher than those of the control by 14.5%, 10.8%, and 24.1%. CuO and C60 NMs promoted antioxidants in both cultivars of sweet potato. Overall, CuO NM at 50 mg/L exhibited the best antifungal properties, followed by TiO2 NM and C60 NM, and these results were further confirmed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The use of CuO NMs as an antifungal agent in the prevention of Rhizopus stolonifer infections in sweet potatoes could greatly reduce postharvest storage and delivery losses.

Abstract:Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, the oomycotic pathogen responsible for potato late blight, is the most devastating disease of potato production. The primary pesticides used to control oomycosis are phenyl amide fungicides, which cause environmental pollution and toxic residues harmful to both human and animal health. To address this, an antimicrobial peptide, NoPv1, has been screened to target Plasmopara viticola cellulose synthase 2 (PvCesA2) to inhibit the growth of Phytophthora infestans (P. infestans). In this study, we employed AlphaFold2 to predict the three-dimensional structure of PvCesA2 along with NoPv peptides. Subsequently, utilizing computational methods, we dissected the interaction mechanism between PvCesA2 and these peptides. Based on this analysis, we performed a saturation mutation of NoPv1 and successfully obtained the double mutants DP1 and DP2 with a higher affinity for PvCesA2. Meanwhile, dynamics simulations revealed that both DP1 and DP2 utilize a mechanism akin to the barrel-stave model for penetrating the cell membrane. Furthermore, the predicted results showed that the antimicrobial activity of DP1 was superior to that of NoPv1 without being toxic to human cells. These findings may offer insights for advancing the development of eco-friendly pesticides targeting various oomycete diseases, including late blight.

Abstract:The use of nanotechnology to suppress crop diseases is gaining increasing interest in agriculture. Copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) were synthesized at 1 : 1 and 1 : 4 ratios of Cu and S and their respective antifungal efficacy was evaluated against the pathogenic activity ofGibberella fujikuroi(bakanae disease) in rice (Oryza sativaL.). In a 2 din vitrostudy, CuS (1 : 1) and CuS (1 : 4) NPs at 50 mg L(-1)decreasedG. fujikuroicolony-forming units (CFU) by 35.7 and 33%, respectively, compared to controls; commercial CuO NPs caused an 18.7% inhibition. In a greenhouse study, treating with both types of CuS NPs at 50 mg L(-1)at the seed stage significantly decreased disease incidence on rice by 35.1 and 45.9%, respectively. Comparatively, CuO NPs achieved only 8.1% disease reduction, and the commercial Cu-based pesticide Kocide 3000 had no impact on disease. Foliar-applied CuO NPs and CuS (1 : 1) NPs decreased disease incidence by 30.0 and 32.5%, respectively, which outperformed CuS (1 : 4) NPs (15%) and Kocide 3000 (12.5%). Notably, CuS (1 : 4) NPs also modulated the shoot salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) production to enhance the plant defense mechanisms againstG. fujikuroiinfection. These findings provide useful information for improving the delivery efficiency of agrichemicalsvianano-enabled strategies while minimizing their environmental impact, and advance our understanding of the defense mechanisms triggered by the NPs presence in plants.
High inhabitation activity of CMCS/Phytic acid/Zn 2+ nanoparticles via flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) for bacterial and fungal infections

Abstract:Plant diseases prompted by fungi and bacteria are one of the most serious threats to global crop production and food security. The destruction of these infections posed a major challenge to plant protection by chemical control. Herein, we develop CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ nanoparticles (NPs) using carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), phytic acid (PA) and metal ions (Zn 2+ ) via flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) strategy. Metal complexes of PA with specified antibacterial and antifungal activities are expected to hold the potential and play a significant role in antimicrobial treatment. The size and size distribution of NPs was confirmed through Dynamic and Static Light Scatterer (DSLS). In acidic-infection microenvironment, the CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ NPs can disintegrate and release Zn 2+ in situ thus stimulated the corresponding antimicrobial activity. These CMCS/PA/Zn 2+ NPs showed outstanding antibacterial efficacy (98 %) against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria in vitro, as well as an impressive antifungal efficacy of 98 % and 81 % against R. solani and B. cinerea at 50 μg/mL respectively. This study contributes a prospective idea to the development of organic-inorganic hybrid NPs as environmentally-friendly and safe agricultural antimicrobials.
