Abstract:Background: Microbiologists are valued for their time-honed skills in image analysis, including identification of pathogens and inflammatory context in Gram stains, ova and parasite preparations, blood smears and histopathologic slides. They also must classify colony growth on a variety of agar plates for triage and assessment. Recent advances in image analysis, in particular application of artificial intelligence (AI), have the potential to automate these processes and support more timely and accurate diagnoses. Objectives: To review current AI-based image analysis as applied to clinical microbiology; and to discuss future trends in the field. Sources: Material sourced for this review included peer-reviewed literature annotated in the PubMed or Google Scholar databases and preprint articles from bioRxiv. Articles describing use of AI for analysis of images used in infectious disease diagnostics were reviewed. Content: We describe application of machine learning towards analysis of different types of microbiologic image data. Specifically, we outline progress in smear and plate interpretation as well as the potential for AI diagnostic applications in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Implications: Combined with automation, we predict that AI algorithms will be used in the future to prescreen and preclassify image data, thereby increasing productivity and enabling more accurate diagnoses through collaboration between the AI and the microbiologist. Once developed, image-based AI analysis is inexpensive and amenable to local and remote diagnostic use.
[A novel reporter system monitoring sortase A catalyzed protein ligation efficiency].

Abstract:Efforts on directed evolution of sortase A to optimize its catalytic properties have been undertaken and shown the promise. To facilitate screening of sortase A mutants with expected catalytic properties, a novel ligation efficiency monitoring system, including reporter substrates GFP-LPETG and GGGYK-Biotin, was developed. GFP-LPETG, wild type sortase A, and a recently reported high activity sortase A mutant were prepared recombinantly from Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3). Taking advantage of the newly designed reporter system, the ligation efficiency catalyzed by wild type and mutant form of sortase A could be sensitively monitored via SDS-PAGE directly. Consistent with previous report, the mutant sortase A displayed much higher catalytic activity compared to wild type enzyme, indicating the new reporter system is easily and fast handled and sensitive. The application of this reporter system into systemic screening will facilitate future directed optimization of sortase A.

Further, AI incorporated machines are specifically designed to function with different degrees of autonomy. Also characterized as a system that operates on machines and is capable of making predictions, recommendations, or judgements that have an impact on either physical or digital surroundings. In addition, the usage of big data analysis by AI tools is increasingly prevalent across various sectors, including the healthcare, to enhance the operational efficiency of relevant data. AI has proven to be highly advantageous in the realm of diagnosing infectious diseases. AI can also be used for expeditiously analysing data and making informed decisions about the optimal allocation of resources in combating infectious diseases. Abstract:BACKGROUND The rate of cesarean section is increasing and in the United States recently exceeded 30% of all deliveries. Birth injuries during CS are relatively rare. Femur fractures have a very low incidence during both vaginal delivery and CS. OBJECTIVES To assess our 10 year experience (2008-1997) in managing fractured femur during CS, including a typical case. METHODS We reviewed the prevalence of femur fractures in two tertiary, academic, level one trauma center hospitals in Israel (Hadassah in Jerusalem and Soroka in Beer Sheva). RESULTS During the study period 221,939 deliveries occurred in both hospitals. Of these, 17.6% were cesarean sections (38,990 CS). Of the total number of deliveries, the incidence of femur fracture was 0.077 per 1000 deliveries (17 fractures), and the incidence of femur fracture during CS was 0.308 per 1000 CS (12 fractures). CONCLUSIONS Cesarean section increases the risk of femur fractures (P < 0.001) with an odds ratio of 11.26 (confidence interval 3.97-31.97).

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) and infectious diseases prediction have recently experienced a common development and advancement. Machine learning (ML) apparition, along with deep learning (DL) emergence, extended many approaches against diseases apparition and their spread. And despite their outstanding results in predicting infectious diseases, conflicts appeared regarding the types of data used and how they can be studied, analyzed, and exploited using various emerging methods. This has led to some ongoing discussions in the field. This research aims not only to provide an overview of what has been accomplished, but also to highlight the difficulties related to the types of data used, and the learning methods applied for each research objective. It categorizes these contributions into three areas: predictions using Public Health Data to prevent the spread of a transmissible disease within a region; predictions using Patients' Medical Data to detect whether a person is infected by a transmissible disease; and predictions using both Public and patient medical data to estimate the extent of disease spread in a population. The paper also critically assesses the potential of AI and outlines its limitations in infectious disease management.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has been described as one of the extremely effective and promising scientific tools available to mankind. AI and its associated innovations are becoming more popular in industry and culture, and they are starting to show up in healthcare. Numerous facets of healthcare, as well as regulatory procedures within providers, payers, and pharmaceutical companies, may be transformed by these innovations. As a result, the purpose of this review is to identify the potential machine learning applications in the field of infectious diseases and the general healthcare system. The literature on this topic was extracted from various databases, such as Google, Google Scholar, Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The articles having important information were selected for this review. The most challenging task for AI in such healthcare sectors is to sustain its adoption in daily clinical practice, regardless of whether the programs are scalable enough to be useful. Based on the summarized data, it has been concluded that AI can assist healthcare staff in expanding their knowledge, allowing them to spend more time providing direct patient care and reducing weariness. Overall, we might conclude that the future of “conventional medicine” is closer than we realize, with patients seeing a computer first and subsequently a doctor.

Abstract:Introduction The utility of non-contact technologies for screening infectious diseases such as COVID-19 can be enhanced by improving the underlying Artificial Intelligence (AI) models and integrating them into data visualization frameworks. AI models that are a fusion of different Machine Learning (ML) models where one has leveraged the different positive attributes of these models have the potential to perform better in detecting infectious diseases such as COVID-19. Furthermore, integrating other patient data such as clinical, socio-demographic, economic and environmental variables with the image data (e.g., chest X-rays) can enhance the detection capacity of these models. Methods In this study, we explore the use of chest X-ray data in training an optimized hybrid AI model based on a real-world dataset with limited sample size to screen patients with COVID-19. We develop a hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Random Forest (RF) model based on image features extracted through a CNN and EfficientNet B0 Transfer Learning Model and applied to an RF classifier. Our approach includes an intermediate step of using the RF's wrapper function, the Boruta Algorithm, to select important variable features and further reduce the number of features prior to using the RF model. Results and discussion The new model obtained an accuracy and recall of 96% for both and outperformed the base CNN model and four other experimental models that combined transfer learning and alternative options for dimensionality reduction. The performance of the model fares closely to relatively similar models previously developed, which were trained on large datasets drawn from different country contexts. The performance of the model is very close to that of the “gold standard” PCR tests, which demonstrates the potential for use of this approach to efficiently scale-up surveillance and screening capacities in resource limited settings.

In recent years, the advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has ushered in a revolutionary era in the realm of infectious disease prevention and control. This evolution encompasses early warning of outbreaks, contact tracing, infection diagnosis, drug discovery, and the facilitation of drug design, alongside other facets of epidemic management. This article presents an overview of the utilization of AI systems in the field of infectious diseases, with a specific focus on their role during the COVID‐19 pandemic. The article also highlights the contemporary challenges that AI confronts within this domain and posits strategies for their mitigation. There exists an imperative to further harness the potential applications of AI across multiple domains to augment its capacity in effectively addressing future disease outbreaks.

Abstract:In December 2019, a novel virus called COVID-19 had caused an enormous number of causalities to date. The battle with the novel Coronavirus is baffling and horrifying after the Spanish Flu 2019. While the front-line doctors and medical researchers have made significant progress in controlling the spread of the highly contiguous virus, technology has also proved its significance in the battle. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence has been adopted in many medical applications to diagnose many diseases, even baffling experienced doctors. Therefore, this survey paper explores the methodologies proposed that can aid doctors and researchers in early and inexpensive methods of diagnosis of the disease. Most developing countries have difficulties carrying out tests using the conventional manner, but a significant way can be adopted with Machine and Deep Learning. On the other hand, the access to different types of medical images has motivated the researchers. As a result, a mammoth number of techniques are proposed. This paper first details the background knowledge of the conventional methods in the Artificial Intelligence domain. Following that, we gather the commonly used datasets and their use cases to date. In addition, we also show the percentage of researchers adopting Machine Learning over Deep Learning. Thus we provide a thorough analysis of this scenario. Lastly, in the research challenges, we elaborate on the problems faced in COVID-19 research, and we address the issues with our understanding to build a bright and healthy environment.

Abstract:The rapid emergence and global spread of infectious diseases pose significant challenges to public health. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have shown great potential in enhancing our ability to prevent, detect, and control infectious disease outbreaks. However, as a growing interdisciplinarity field, a gap exists between AI scientists and infectious disease biologists, limiting the full potential of AI in this field. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the applications of AI in infectious diseases, focusing on the progress along the four stages of outbreaks: pre-pandemic, early pandemic, pandemic, and periodic epidemic stages. We discuss AI methods in early detection and risk assessment, outbreak surveillance, diagnosis and control, and understanding pathogenic mechanisms. We also propose the primary limitations, challenges, and potential solutions associated with AI tools in public health contexts while examining crucial considerations for future enhanced implementation. By harnessing the power of AI, we can develop more precise and targeted strategies to mitigate the burden of infectious diseases and improve global health.

Abstract:Abstract With the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), the field of infectious diseases (ID) faces both innovation and disruption. AI and its subfields including machine learning, deep learning and large language models can support ID clinician’s decision making and streamline their workflow. AI models may help ensure earlier detection of disease, more personalized empiric treatment recommendations, and allocation of human resources to support higher yield antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention strategies. AI is unlikely to replace the role of ID experts, but instead augment it. However its limitations will need to be carefully addressed and mitigated to ensure safe and effective implementation. ID experts can be engaged in AI implementation by participating in training and education, identifying use cases for AI to help improve care for their patients, designing, validating and evaluating algorithms, and continuing to advocate for their vital role in patient care.

Abstract:Up to 7.4% (w/w) of the sulfonated polyaniline, poly(2-methoxyaniline-5-sulfonic acid) (PMAS) can be absorbed onto nanostructured calcium silicates. Spectroscopic and leaching studies on the novel PMAS-silicate nanocomposites obtained indicate that attachment of the PMAS occurs via electrostatic binding of PMAS sulfonate groups to Ca2+ sites on the silicates. The surface area and pore volume of the nanocomposites are comparable to those of pure silicate and increase the surface area of the PMAS polymer by several orders of magnitude. The PMAS emeraldine salt in the nanocomposites retains its chemical reactivity, being readily oxidised and reduced to its pernigraniline and leucoemeraldine forms, respectively. The conductivity of the composite is comparable to that of the pure PMAS, several orders of magnitude higher than that of dried nanostructured calcium silicate.

Abstract:Abstract Background Infective and infectious dermatological diseases, which range from minor diseases like impetigo to serious diseases like deep fungal infections, pose significant public health issues. Given the growth of drug‐resistant microorganisms, it is critical to investigate novel techniques in dermatology. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown promising results in improving the diagnosis, treatment, and management of infectious skin disorders. This has the potential to significantly improve dermatological treatment by combining physician experience with data‐driven insights. Objective This review will look into the existing uses and future possibilities of AI technologies in infectious dermatology, including machine learning and deep learning. Its goal is to highlight major advances, identify gaps in understanding and technical advancement, and recommend viable future research directions. Methods A comprehensive literature search of the scientific literature was performed using well‐known databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase. A specific set of phrases relevant to AI and infectious dermatology was used to ensure a thorough search. Articles were picked based on their relevance, timeliness, and quality, with a particular emphasis on research demonstrating how AI is being utilized to prevent, detect, diagnose, or manage infectious skin disorders. Results AI has made significant contributions to the management of infection in dermatology. It has improved diagnostic accuracy, predictive modeling of drug resistance, and individualized care regimens. Deep learning is used to evaluate clinical images, predictive models are developed to forecast antibiotic resistance, and AI‐powered diagnostic tools for uncommon infections. The assessment also throws light on AI's role in pandemic preparedness and response.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various domains of our society. By applying algorithms to robust datasets, AI has made breakthroughs in image recognition, image generation, and generative chatbots. In each case, the success of AI invariably relies on the availability of comprehensive datasets, such as ImageNet 1 , DALL·E 2 2 , and vast amounts of internet data. Similarly, in the field of biology, AI has recently made significant advances in protein structure prediction 3 through the use of high-quality datasets, including the protein data bank (PDB) 4 . Other areas, such as antibiotic discovery and infectious diseases, have also seen significant progress 5-15 . However, despite these advancements, the application of AI to the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases is still in its infancy. The main obstacle is the scarcity of reliable datasets necessary to train AI algorithms. Datasets containing data points collected under standardized conditions are, thus, urgently needed.

Abstract:Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are the most common adverse events in healthcare and constitute a major global public health concern. Surveillance represents the foundation for the effective prevention and control of HAIs, yet conventional surveillance is costly and labor intensive. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have the potential to support the development of HAI surveillance algorithms for the understanding of HAI risk factors, the improvement of patient risk stratification as well as the prediction and timely detection and prevention of infections. AI-supported systems have so far been explored for clinical laboratory testing and imaging diagnosis, antimicrobial resistance profiling, antibiotic discovery and prediction-based clinical decision support tools in terms of HAIs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the current literature on AI applications in the field of HAIs and discuss the future potentials of this emerging technology in infection practice. Following the PRISMA guidelines, this study examined the articles in databases including PubMed and Scopus until November 2023, which were screened based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in 162 included articles. By elucidating the advancements in the field, we aim to highlight the potential applications of AI in the field, report related issues and shortcomings and discuss the future directions.
