Abstract:Background: Insomnia disorder is a common health condition; it has a role in increasing the possibility of developing other psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression. Anxiety and preoccupation with sleep are two examples of common cognitive factors that contribute to the development of chronic insomnia; thus, it is important to have a tool that assesses worry in insomnia. There is no comprehensive psychiatric measure to assess anxiety and preoccupation with sleep in Arabic. We conducted this study to translate, adapt, and validate the Arabic version of the Anxiety and Preoccupation about Sleep Questionnaire (APSQ), providing a reliable psychometric tool to assess concerns regarding sleep within Arabic-speaking communities. Methods: The translation process of the scale involved several steps, including forward and backward translation. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey completed by 523 participants from various Arabic-speaking countries. Psychometric analysis was performed utilizing the R software, including internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and confirmatory factor analysis. In addition, convergent and divergent against the Athens insomnia scale (AIS) and general anxiety disorder (GAD) were conducted. Results: The Arabic-translated form of the APSQ expresses excellent internal consistency with a value of 0.91 for both Cronbach's α and McDonald's ω. The test-retest reliability of a subsample showed an excellent coefficient of 0.93 (p<0.01). A good fit of the APSQ was observed by CFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.91, SRMR = 0.05, and RMSEA = 0.1. Convergent and divergent against AIS and GAD showed statistically significant correlations of 0.85 (p<0.01) and 0.69 (p<0.01), respectively. Our sample showed a mean APSQ score of 31.28 ± 8.31, and the mean age was 23.62 ± 7.5. Conclusion: The Arabic APSQ is reliable and valid for measuring anxiety and preoccupation with sleep in Arabic countries. Using translated APSQ for clinical diagnosis and research is currently trustworthy.

Although the PSAS is useful, an Arabic version of the scale has not yet been developed and validated. The current study aimed to translate the PSAS into Arabic language and evaluate its psychometric properties, such as reliability and validity, in an Arabic-speaking population. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 438 participants who completed the Arabic version of the PSAS, along with other validated measures of insomnia, anxiety, and sleep effort. Results: The results indicated that the Arabic version of the PSAS maintained the original scale's two-factor structure. The factor loadings for PSAS-Cognitive ranged from 0.57 to 0.75, and for PSAS-Somatic, from 0.45 to 0.70, with all loadings being statistically significant ( p < 0.001). The Arabic version of the PSAS exhibited high internal consistency (McDonald's ω = 0.86; Cronbach's α = 0.86; Guttman's λ 2 = 0.86; Greatest Lower Boun d = 0.90) and test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.88) over two weeks. The PSAS demonstrated good concurrent and convergent validity. We documented significant large differences between individuals with "no insomnia" and those with "insomnia" symptoms across cognitive, somatic, and total pre-sleep arousal (all p < 0.001). The insomnia group consistently scored higher scores for PSAP and its subscales. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the Arabic version of the PSAS is a reliable and valid tool for assessing pre-sleep arousal in Arabic-speaking individuals. Abstract:This mini-meta-analysis evaluated the internal consistency of the Anxiety and Preoccupation about Sleep Questionnaire (APSQ) across existing studies to assess its potential as an orthosomnia (an obsessive preoccupation with achieving perfect sleep) screening tool. A systematic literature search identified four studies with 2,506 participants using English, Swedish, Turkish, and Arabic versions. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.91 to 0.95 across studies. The APSQ demonstrated high overall internal consistency reliability (pooled Cronbach's alpha of the entire ASPQ = 0.93, 95% CI 0.91–0.94), suggesting utility for screening orthosomnia symptoms. The pooled Cronbach's alpha of the first and second factors of the ASPQ were: 0.91 (95% CI 0.89–0.93) and 0.87 (95% CI 0.84–0.89), respectively. APSQ demonstrated high overall internal consistency reliability; however, limited linguistic/cultural representation and significant heterogeneity across studies impact generalizability.

Abstract:Introduction The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is a self-administrated questionnaire most frequently used to assess insomnia in clinical and non-clinical populations. Objective To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Arabic ISI among patients diagnosed with chronic diseases. Methods A cross-sectional and descriptive correlational design was used. A total of 1,005 patients with chronic diseases completed the seven items of the Arabic ISI version. The scale was assessed in terms of acceptability, internal consistency, and validity. Construct validity was explored with the use of principal factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, to examine the dimensional structure of the ISI. Results The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the Arabic ISI was 0.82, which shows good reliability. The total ISI score did not have floor or ceiling effects. There was evidence of discriminate validity. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) indicated two factors (four items loading on Factor I and three items loading on Factor II). The construct validity of PCA in terms of two factors was explored by confirmatory factor analysis to examine the dimensional structure of the ISI. The confirmatory factor analysis showed an absolute fit for the two-factor model. Conclusion The results support the two-factor structure of ISI. The Arabic version of the ISI demonstrated good reliability and validity for assessing insomnia in patients diagnosed with chronic diseases.

Abstract:Background: Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies show that poor sleep is a health concern related to further psychological and physiological issues during adolescence. To assess subjective sleep quality and sleep patterns among adults, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a well and internationally established tool. Here, we established the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the PSQI for adolescents. Method: A total of 1477 adolescents (mean age: 15.47 years; 53.2% females) took part in the study. They completed a booklet on sociodemographic information, the Persian version of the PSQI for adolescents, and the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS). We relied on classical test reliability approaches of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Results: Classical exploratory factor analysis yielded the seven-factor solution, with concurrent confirmation and overlap with the dimensions of the ASHS, although correlation coefficients were small to medium. A further factor analysis yielded a four-factor solution, explaining 72% of the variance of the PSQI. Further, three out of these four factors predicted the ASHS overall score. Conclusions: The Persian version of the PSQI for adolescents showed satisfactory psychometric properties. It follows that the Persian PSQI is a suitable tool to assess sleep quality and sleep patterns among adolescents.

Abstract:Introduction: Sleep is necessary for maintaining adequate health and well-being. However, several behavioral and environmental factors, known as sleep hygiene, could affect sleep quality, contributing to the development of insomnia. Instruments to measure sleep hygiene such as the sleep hygiene index (SHI) have been developed, but only a few are available in the Arabic language. Therefore, this study was designed to translate and culturally adapt the SHI from English to Arabic. Methods: The SHI was translated from English to Arabic using the forward–backward translation method recommended by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research guidelines. Nine Arabic-speaking individuals of diverse educational and cultural backgrounds reviewed the Arabic SHI. The internal consistency reliability of the items contained in the Arabic SHI was determined. Results: The SHI was successfully translated and culturally adapted into the Arabic language. Minimal changes in the wording of some questions were required to ensure the cultural adaptability of the instrument. The Arabic version of the SHI was found to be simple, clear, and brief as reported by the participants during cognitive debriefing. The Arabic SHI has moderate internal consistency reliability with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.589. Conclusion: The Arabic SHI is a brief and easy-to-understand instrument for assessing sleep hygiene practices and behavior in Arabic-speaking population. Further assessment of the psychometric properties of the Arabic SHI is necessary to ensure the validity of this instrument in different populations.
Validation of the Arabic Version of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale among the Yemeni Medical Students

Abstract:The study was conducted with the aim to assess the psychometric measures of an adapted Arabic version of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) among medical students at Sana'a University, Yemen. The cross-sectional study targeted 360 students (males: 176; females: 184) from the preclinical 3rd year (N: 197) and the final clinical year (N: 163). Participants self-filled an Arabic and slightly modified version of the 8-item Epworth Sleepiness Scale. Exploratory Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Confirmatory Factor Analyses (CFA) were conducted on two equal subsets of the sample (N: 180 each). The PCA yielded a two-dimension model subsequently confirmed by factor analysis. The first dimension was grouped on three items while the second dimension had five items reflecting the respondents' propensity to sleep during "interactive situations" and "sitting and lying," respectively. The model had an acceptable goodness of fit measures for the overall ESS (CMINDF = 2.362, CFI = 0.91, IFI = 0.92) and acceptable reliability indicators (factor 1 α = 0.65, factor 2 α = 0.62). However, due to weak variance explanation (0.07) of item 6 (sitting and talking) in factor 1, analysis was repeated excluding this item. The 7-item model was also two-dimensional, valid, and reliable. The reliability indicators were acceptable with α = 0.65 for factor 1 (4 items of interactive situations) and 0.62 for factor 2 (3 items of sitting) and overall α = 0.68. Overall, the ESS is a useful tool. Factor analysis produced a two-factor model of 7 items with good validity and reasonable reliability that can be used in diagnosing daytime sleepiness among young Yemeni adults.
The diagnostic accuracy of the Arabic version of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire for screening for pediatric sleep-related breathing disorders in Saudi children

Abstract:Background: Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) is a valid, reliable tool for screening for sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs) translated into several languages since 2000. The diagnostic accuracy of an Arabic version of the PSQ has never been tested. Our aim was to translate the original version of PSQ into Arabic (Arabic-PSQ), validate it as a reliable screening tool, and compare it to the gold standard diagnostic method for SRBDs. Materials and methods: This was a prospective longitudinal study of 54 children (2-14 years) who were to undergo polysomnography (PSG). SRBD was assessed by administering the Arabic version of PSQ to the parents of these children. The validity and reliability of the Arabic-PSQ were assessed. Data were analyzed using Stata 16. Correlation between with polysomnographic indices and PSQ scores, as well as measurement of the diagnostic accuracy were determined. Receiver operating characteristic analysis between the mean PSQ scores and binary PSG results was done and the area under curve (AUC) value was calculated. Results: Thirty-four (63%) children were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea by PSG (Apnea-Hypopnea Index [AHI] ≥1), 26 of whom were accurately identified with the Arabic-PSQ (76.5%). Arabic-PSQ showed comparable validity and reliability. Using a cutoff of 0.33, the score showed a significant correlation with AHI: Rs: 0.30 (P = 0.029). The sensitivity was 76.5%, the specificity was 50%, the positive predictive was 72.2%, the negative predictive value was 55.6%, the positive likelihood ratio was 1.63, and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.37. Conclusions: The Arabic-PSQ is a valid tool for the screening of Arabic-speaking populations for SRBD. It is valuable for directing the diagnostic approach in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Abstract:The Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS) is the first published bedside clinical tool to specifically measure sleep disturbances in Parkinson's disease (PD). The objective of the present study was to carry out a metric analysis of a Spanish version (PDSS-SV) using a cross-sectional study of 100 PD patients who participated in the study. Usual measures for PD and mental status were applied by neurologists. Patients completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39 Items (PDQ-39), and PDSS-SV. PDSS internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha, 0.77; significant item-total correlation for 11 items) was satisfactory. PDSS showed high test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient for items, 0.79-0.99; for total score, 0.94). Standard error of measurement was 9.80 (crossover) and 5.01 (longitudinal). Scores were distributed uniformly, with low floor and ceiling effect (1%). PDSS scores were correlated significantly with depression (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, r(S) = -0.55; P < 0.0001) and quality of life (PDQ-39 Summary Index, r(S) = -0.26; P = 0.007), but not with clinical variables. Self-perception of mood disorder, pain, or hallucinations correlated individually with PDSS scores, and a factor explaining 65% of the variance was found. The assessment of PD sleep disorders with the PDSS met some basic standards required for health status measures.

Abstract:Background: Various studies have shown that insomnia is associated with computer use. The Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS) is an 8-item tool that has been widely used for screening insomnia. No studies have investigated the psychometric validity of AIS in occupational computer users. Objective: the current research aimed to test the psychometric properties of the AIS among occupational computer users. Materials and Methods: a sample of four hundred and twenty-four occupational computer users (age: 20–65 years and body mass index: 21.6 ± 3.5 kg/m2) completed an AIS and a socio-demographic questionnaire in this cross-sectional study. Results: a confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the three-factor model had an adequate fit (the goodness of fit index (0.95), incremental fit index (0.90) and χ2/df (2.61)). Evidence was found for configural, scalar and metric invariance of the 3-factor model across gender groups. A moderate level of internal consistency was implied by a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.66. Conclusion: the findings of the present research support the validity of AIS for screening insomnia, as demonstrated by the scale’s psychometric properties; its internal consistency, internal homogeneity, item discrimination, and factorial validity.

Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale

Abstract:Objective: We aimed to assess the validity and reliability of a Turkish adaptation of the Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale (GSES). Methods: We randomly divided the data into two: one set (n = 374) was used for exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the other (n = 373) for confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The psychometric properties were assessed using the item response theory approach. Reliability analyses were assessed. Convergent validity of the GSES with the Dysfunctional Beliefs and Attitudes About Sleep Scale-16 (DBAS-16), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) were explored. For the predictive validity, we used an independent-samples t-test for comparing the total score of the GSES between poor sleepers and good sleepers following the PSQI, and between clinical insomnia and non-clinical insomnia groups according to the ISI. The cut-off score of the GSES was examined. Results: A single factor structure explaining 49.2% of the total variance was detected using the EFA. The CFA also found single-factor good fit indices. Cronbach's alpha and omega values were 0.82 and 0.83, respectively. There were statistically significant correlations between the GSES and DBAS-16, ISI, PSQI, and DASS-21 in convergent validity. In the Graded Response Model, the GSES was more efficient and provided reasonable information at the -0.75 to 2.25 theta level. The GSES cut-off score was 6 points for clinical insomnia and 3 points for poor sleepers. Conclusions: The GSES is valid and reliable for measuring sleep effort among Turkish university students.

Abstract:Meta-analytic results have revealed a significant influence of stress on a wide array of psychological and behavioral markers, underscoring its considerable clinical importance. Providing a simple and cost-effective tool assessing stress for the Arabic-speaking population would be immensely beneficial. Therefore, our research objective was to examine the psychometric properties of an Arabic version of the Stress Numerical Rating Scale-11 (Arabic SNRS-11), including its reliability, and construct validity. 763 adolescents were recruited during November 2023. An anonymous self-administered Google Forms link was distributed via social media networks. The results of the EFA revealed two factors, which explained 66.43% of the common variance. When adding the SNRS-11, Bartlett's test of sphericity, χ 2 (55) = 4127.1, p < 0.001, and KMO (0.88) remained adequate. The two-factor solution obtained explained 63.28% of the variance. The same structure was obtained in both males and females separately. McDonald's ω and Cronbach's α were very good for all models. Both PSS and Arabic SNRS-11 scores correlated significantly and positively with each other, as well as with higher depression, anxiety and stress scores. Finally, no significant difference was found between males and females in terms of PSS (27.08 ± 6.43 vs. 27.72 ± 6.06; p = 0.163; Cohen's d = 0.102) and Arabic SNRS-11 (4.68 ± 2.56 vs. 4.97 ± 2.52; p = 0.125; Cohen's d = 0.113) scores. The findings indicate that the Arabic SNRS-11 is a cost-effective, valid, and reliable tool for assessing stress. Therefore, it is recommended to use this single item to assess momentary or day-to-day stress among Arabic-speaking adolescents in Arab clinical and research settings. To evaluate the practical effectiveness of the Arabic SNRS-11 and to further enhance the data on its construct validity, future studies should assess the measure in diverse contexts and among specific populations.

Abstract:Objectives: Evaluate the psychometric properties and structural validity of the Filipino version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) among Filipino domestic workers (FDWs). Methods: In Study 1, 131 FDWs completed PSQI and other scales, along with 10-day actigraphic assessment with accompanying electronic daily sleep dairy. A subsample of 61 participants completed follow-up assessment after 10 days. In Study 2, 1363 FDWs were recruited and randomized into two halves. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used in the two halves, respectively. Results: In Study 1, the Cronbach’s alpha of the PSQI was 0.63 at baseline and 0.67 at follow-up. Test-retest reliability for the PSQI global score based on intraclass correlation was 0.63. Convergent validity was supported by the significant associations between the PSQI global score, PSQI components scores, sleep patterns from the daily sleep diary, and measures of depression, anxiety, and rumination. Small correlations between the PSQI global score and measures of daytime sleepiness, social support, and self-reported height, supported discriminant validity. In Study 2, EFA yielded two PSQI factors with acceptable factor loadings. CFA established that this two-factor model, comprised of perceived sleep quality and sleep efficiency, evidenced better model fit than alternative models tested. The Cronbach’s alpha of two factors was 0.70 and 0.81, respectively. Conclusions: The PSQI demonstrated good internal consistency of two factors, and good convergent, and divergent validity. Results can be referenced in future studies to measure and screen sleep dysfunction among clinical and non-clinical populations in the Philippines.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: Sleep is one of the most significant of human behaviors, occupying roughly one third of human life. Sleep is a process the brain requires for proper functioning. Sleep hygiene can be described as practices to ease sleep and to avoid factors which decrease sleep quality. Inadequate sleep hygiene generally results in disturbance of daily life activities due to inability to sustain sleep quality and daytime wakefulness. Therefore, the importance of development and utilization of measures of sleep hygiene increases. The aim of the study was to assess psychometric properties of the Sleep Hygiene Index (SHI) in clinical and non-clinical Turkish samples.METHOD: Data were collected from 106 patients with major depression consecutively admitted to the psychiatry clinic of Yüzüncü Yıl University School of Medicine and 200 were volunteers recruited from community sample who were enrolled at the university. The SHI, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) were administered to the subjects. Factor structure of the SHI was evaluated with explanatory and multi-sample confirmatory factor analyses. Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients of the SHI with the PSQI, ISI and ESS were computed. Item analyses, internal consistency coefficients and intra-class correlations between two repeated applications in both patient and healthy subjects were calculated.RESULTS: The SHI revealed a unidimensional factor structure. Significant strong partial associations of the SHI with depression, insomnia and poor sleep quality and a modest partial association with sleepiness were detected. Cronbach's alphas for the SHI in community sample and patients with major depression were 0.70 and 0.71, respectively. Additionally, we found acceptable three-week temporal reliability in terms of intra-correlation coefficients of r=0.62, p<0.01 for the community sample and of r=0.67, p<0.01 among patients with major depression.CONCLUSION: The SHI revealed adequate validity and reliability to be used by researchers in Turkish sample. Current results were discussed in light of previous findings and theoretical considerations.

Abstract:Background: The Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS) is a well-known tool to design and monitor personalized sleep health promotion at an individual and population level. The lack of an established French version limits the development of effective interventions targeting these populations. Thus, the aim of this study was to validate the French version of the SBS in a representative sample of the general population. Methods: Quota sampling was used to recruit 1,004 participants (18–65 years, mean age: 43 years, 54% of female) who underwent an online survey to complete the SBS, and to assess sleep schedules, sleep quality and disorders, and mental health. Cronbach's α coefficient, confirmatory factor analysis, item-internal consistency (IIC), and item discriminant validity (IDV) of the SBS were computed to assess internal validity while bivariate associations with sleep schedules, sleep quality and disorders, and mental health were used to assess external convergent and discriminant validity. Results: The mean score on the SBS was 12.3 ± 4.9. Item 19 ("Quiet & Dark") showed the highest rate of correct answers ( n = 801, 79.8%), while item 20 ("Recovering sleep") showed the lowest rate of correct answers ( n = 246, 24.5%). Overall, the SBS showed satisfactory internal consistency ( α = 0.87) and confirmed the three-factor structure proposed by the original study. All items were found consistent (IIC > 0.4) and discriminant (IIC > IDV) except for item 20 ("recovering lost sleep by sleeping for a long time"). Females, older participants, and subjects with short time-in-bed, poor sleep quality, insomnia, and circadian rhythm disorder had higher SBS scores while participants with depressive symptoms had lower SBS scores. Conclusion: We successfully translated and validated the French version of the SBS in a representative sample, making it a reliable instrument for researchers and clinicians to assess and target sleep beliefs. Correct answers vary from 25 to 80% which underlines the importance of continuing sleep health promotion campaigns by targeting poorly understood behaviors. Our findings also shed light on the fickleness of beliefs that are prone to vary within individuals across time, in step with societal changes. Several associated factors were identified, thus contributing to our understanding of sleep beliefs and offering insights for personalized approaches to enhance sleep health and overall well-being.

Abstract:Background: The study aimed to assess the measurement properties of a simplified Chinese version of the Sleep Condition Indicator (SCI-SC) in the community. Methods: A psychometric evaluation through an observational cross-sectional survey design was conducted. Community residents (N = 751) in Hangzhou, China completed the SCI-SC and the simplified Chinese version of the Sleep Quality Questionnaire (SQQ) in July 2021. Data were randomly split into a development sample (N = 375) for model development by exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a holdout sample (N = 376) for validation by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Multi-group CFA (MGCFA) was used to assess configural, metric, scalar, and strict measurement invariance across gender, age, marital status, body mass index (BMI), napping habits, generic exercise, hobby, and administered survey. Moreover, statistical analyses were performed to determine the reliability (alpha and omega) and construct validity of the instrument. Results: Both factor analyses showed a stable solution with two dimensions of Sleep Pattern and Sleep-Related Impact. Good structural validity, robust internal consistency, and construct validity with the SQQ were demonstrated. There was evidence of strict invariance across gender, BMI, napping habits, generic exercise, hobby, and administered survey subgroups, but only metric and scalar invariances were established across age and marital status groups, respectively. Conclusions: The SCI-SC demonstrated promising psychometric properties, with high SQQ concordance and consistent structure of the original version. The SCI-SC can be used by sleep researchers as well as healthcare professionals in various contexts in detecting risks for insomnia disorder in the community.

Abstract:Background <i>Preoperative anxiety</i> is a frequent and challenging problem that may impact a patient's postoperative pain and satisfaction. The level of a patient's anxiety needs to be assessed through a valid and reliable instrument to prevent and treat preoperative anxiety effectively. One such reliable measurement scale is Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and information scale, which is based on a self-reported questionnaire but is still not validated in Arabic. Objective To validate the Arabic Version of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) for assessing preoperative anxiety in the Arabic population. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to translate and evaluate the validity of the APAIS in the Arabic version. The targeted population was Saudi adults undergoing surgery at the King Fahad Hospital in the Qassim region of Saudi Arabia. One hundred hospital patients were recruited and given the APAIS questionnaire to collect the data. The ethical considerations have been appropriately followed to protect the privacy of the patient's history. The collected data was qualitative and quantitative, which were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results The questionnaire showed high internal consistency on the anxiety scale (Cronbach's alpha: 0.851) and a strong correlation between age, chronic diseases, and surgery. While Cronbach's alpha for the information scale is 0.827. The gold standard curve between the worried and afraid two variables showed good efficiency during the configuration. In addition, the Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) model of the Arabic version is a two-factor model to evaluate the validity of the Arabic version. Conclusion The Arabic Version of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and information scale (APAIS) is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing preoperative anxiety. Using this validated scale for Arabic patients is feasible and shows promising results.
Validation of the Japanese version of the Sleep Hygiene Practice Scale

Abstract:Objective: This study sought to validate the Japanese version of the Sleep Hygiene Practices Scale (SHPS-J). Patients/methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted via the internet. In total, 854 participants (435 men, 419 women; mean age, 42.91 ± 11.54 years) were asked to complete all scales, and 283 of them were asked to complete the same scales two weeks later. The survey consisted of the SHPS-J, the Japanese version of the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI-J), and the Japanese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-J). The SHPS-J was developed according to the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Task Force for Translation and Cultural Adaption. For the analysis, participants were divided into three groups: insomnia syndrome, insomnia symptoms, and good sleep groups. Results: The SHPS-J had good test-retest reliability (ICC: 0.55-0.76) and adequate internal consistency (α = 0.54-0.74), except with regard to eating/drinking behaviors. The factorial validity of the four-factor structure was confirmed through a confirmatory factor analysis; however, one item related to eating/drinking behaviors had no significant factor loading. The construct validity was confirmed through a correlation analysis between each domain of the SHPS-J and ISI-J (r = 0.19-0.60, p < 0.01). The results of clinical validation confirmed that all domains of the SHPS-J were significantly higher for individuals with insomnia than for good sleepers. Conclusions: This study confirmed both the reliability and validity of the SHPS-J.
