Abstract:The global prevalence of microplastics (MPs) poses a potential threat and unpredictable risk to the function and health of environmental systems. However, the research progress of soil MPs is restricted by the inherent technical inconformity and difficulties in analyzing particles in complex matrices. Here, we reviewed a selection of papers and then extrapolated a tentative standardized method for such analyses. The multiple sources of soil MPs in soil need to be quantified. Global monitoring data of soil MPs is far from sufficient. The interaction between MPs and different properties and environmental factors controls the migration and retention of MPs in soil. The migration behavior and key mechanisms of MPs in real-world environments remain to be determined. The presence of MPs threatens soil microbial-plant-animal ecosystem function and health, and may enter the human body through the food chain, although the extent of these hazards is currently debated. In particular, attention should be paid to the potential transport and ecotoxicological mechanisms of contaminants derived and adsorptive from MPs and of harmful microorganisms (such as pathogens) attached as biofilms. Although there exist preliminary studies on soil MPs, it is urgent to consider the diversity of MPs as a suite of contaminants and to systematically understand the sources, flux and effects of these artificial pollutants in time and space from the perspective of plastic environmental cycle. More comprehensive quantification of their environmental fate is undertaken to identify risks to global human and ecological systems. From the perspective of controlling soil MP pollution, the responsibility assignment of government manage-producer-consumer system and the strategy of remediation should be implemented. This review is helpful for providing an important roadmap and inspiration for the research methods and framework of soil MPs and facilitates the development of waste management and remediation strategies for regional soil MP contamination.

Abstract:Soil is the source and sink of microplastics (MPs), which is more polluted than water and air. In this paper, the pollution levels of MPs in the agriculture, roadside, urban and landfill soils were reviewed, and the influence of MPs on soil ecosystem, including soil properties, microorganisms, animals and plants, was discussed. According to the results of in vivo and in vitro experiments, the possible risks of MPs to soil ecosystem and human health were predicted. Finally, in light of the current status of MPs research, several prospects are provided for future research directions to better evaluate the ecological risk and human health risk of MPs. MPs concentrations in global agricultural soils, roadside soils, urban soils and landfill soils had a great variance in different studies and locations. The participation of MPs has an impact on all aspects of terrestrial ecosystems. For soil properties, pH value, bulk density, pore space and evapotranspiration can be changed by MPs. For microorganisms, MPs can alter the diversity and abundance of microbiome, and different MPs have different effects on bacteria and fungi differently. For plants, MPs may interfere with their biochemical and physiological conditions and produce a wide range of toxic effects, such as inhibiting plant growth, delaying or reducing seed germination, reducing biological and fruit yield, and interfering with photosynthesis. For soil animals, MPs can affect their mobility, growth rate and reproductive capacity. At present epidemiological evidences regarding MPs exposure and negative human health effects are unavailable, but in vitro and in vivo data suggest that they pose various threats to human health, including respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system, nervous system, and circulation system. In conclusion, the existence and danger of MPs cannot be ignored and requires a global effort.

Abstract:Increasing production of synthetic plastics and poor management of plastic wastes have dramatically increased the amount of plastics in the environment. In 2014, at the first United Nations Environment Assembly, marine plastic waste pollution was listed as one of the 10 most pressing environmental issues. In addition, there is much plastic waste in terrestrial ecosystems due to substantial residues from agricultural mulching and packing. As a recently recognized pollutant, microplastics (MPs) have attracted significant attention from the public and various governments. Concentrations of MPs in the environment vary among locations, from 1 × 106 particles per cubic meter. Many studies have addressed the impacts and potential mechanisms of MPs on the environment and organisms. Humans and other organisms can ingest or carry MPs in a variety of passive ways and these MPs can have a range of negative effects on metabolism, function, and health. Additionally, given their large surface area, MPs can sorb various pollutants, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, with serious implications for animals and human wellbeing. However, due to their complexity and a lack of accurate determination methods, the systematic impacts of MP pollution on whole foodwebs are not clearly established. Therefore, this review summarizes current research advances in MP pollution, particularly the impact of MPs on soils, plants, and animals, and proposes potential future research prospects to better characterize MPs.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), as a kind of emerging pollutants, have arouse widespread concern with significant impact on ecosystems. Great attempts have been made to remove MPs from natural environments, yet they were still commonly detected with increasing concentration in various environmental media. The ultimate effectiveness of current remediation measures for MP pollution remained largely unexplored. Furthermore, with irreversibility and non-biodegradation, these MPs enriched in environments, exposed to various abiotic and biotic stress for a long-term. Natural aging processes change physicochemical properties and then environmental fate of MPs, inducing potential harm to ecosystems and human health. However, our understanding of aging behavior of MPs remains to be actually interpreted. This review summarized the latest progress in alleviating MP pollution and assessed their usability, especially for the controversial application of biodegradable plastics. The typical abiotic and biotic aging processes of MPs were also discussed. Giving that abiotic processes such as photo-aging are usually considered as prior to biodegradation, we reasonably assume MPs would undergo a prolonged aging process, but not a thorough degradation to a great extent due to their fairly slow degradation rate. This process might aggravate potential risk, especially aged MPs providing more ideal interfaces for the colonization of viral microbes deserves more attention in the future. This article conducts a systematical analysis and summary of long-term environmental behavior of MPs. Future research is encouraged to comprehensively strengthen the removal of MPs in ecosystems through source control and more targeted process treatment.
A Review of the Distribution, Characteristics and Environmental Fate of Microplastics in Different Environments of China

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitously present in different environmental media that can lead to potential hazards to the global ecosystem and human health. As the largest producer and user of plastics in the world, the abundance and characteristics of MPs contamination in various environmental media in China deserve to be paid more attention. To assess the ecological and environmental risks of MPs, their abundance, sources and contamination characteristics in different environmental media in China were investigated. In this review, MPs data from 1862 sampling sites in six environmental media in China have been collected. The mean abundance of MPs in different environmental media was then summarized and analyzed, which was 160.35 ± 114.68 items m −3 in seawater, 413.91 ± 216.02 items kg −1 in seawater sediments, 3546.38 ± 382.61 items m −3 in inland water, 1297.71 ± 910.47 items kg −1 in inland water sediments, 1987.86 ± 1004.31 items kg −1 in soils, and 119.68 ± 85.40 items m −2 d −1 in atmospheric fallout, respectively. The sizes of MPs were mainly < 1 mm, and the types of MPs were mainly polypropylene, polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate. In addition, we discussed the challenges posed by the inadequacy of MPs detection methods for the analysis of MPs contaminated areas and provided prospects on future research on MPs contamination. This review can improve our understanding of the pollution characteristics of MPs in China, illustrate the migration and transformation patterns of MPs in the overall environment, and provide reliable reference data for the development of MPs detection standards.

Abstract:Microplastics (<5 mm) (MPs) are widely distributed throughout the world, and their accumulation and migration in the environment have caused health and safety concerns. Currently, most of the reviewed literatures mainly focus on the distribution in various environmental media, adsorption mechanisms with different pollutants, and characterization of MPs. Therefore, the present review mainly highlights the characterization techniques of MPs and the underlying mechanisms of their combination with conventional coexisting substances (heavy metals, organic pollutants, and nutrients). We observed that massive MP pollution has been found in many areas, especially in Africa, Asia, India, South Africa, North America and Europe. The separation methods of MPs in different environmental media are basically similar, including sampling, pre-treatment, flotation, filtration and digestion. The combination of multiple characterization technologies can more precisely identify the shape, abundance, colour, and particle size of MPs. Notably, although recent reports have confirmed that MPs can act as carriers of heavy metals and carry them into organisms to cause harm, MPs have different adsorption and desorption characteristics for various heavy metals. The adsorption capacity of organic pollutants onto MPs is closely related to their hydrophobicity, specific surface area and functional group characteristics. The relative abundance of MPs in sediments and lakes had a significantly positive correlation with the mass concentration of total nitrogen in lake water, but this finding still needs to be further verified. Based on current research, we suggest that future MP research should focus on characterization technology, environmental migration, ecological effects, health risks and degradation methods.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive across ecosystems, presenting substantial risks to human health. Developing a comprehensive review of MPs is crucial due to the growing evidence of their widespread presence and potential harmful effects. Despite the growth in research, considerable uncertainties persist regarding their transport dynamics, prevalence, toxicological impacts, and the potential long-term health effects they may cause. This review thoroughly evaluates recent advancements in research on MPs and their implications for human health, including estimations of human exposure through ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. It also quantifies the distribution and accumulation of MPs in various organs and tissues. The review discusses the mechanisms enabling MPs to cross biological barriers and the role of particle size in their translocation. To ensure methodological rigor, this review adheres to the PRISMA guidelines, explicitly detailing the literature search strategy, inclusion criteria, and the quality assessment of selected studies. The review concludes that MPs pose significant toxicological risks, identifies critical gaps in current knowledge, and recommends future research directions to elucidate the prolonged effects of MPs on human health. This work aims to offer a scientific framework for mitigating MP-related hazards and establishes a foundation for ongoing investigation.

Abstract:The rise of plasticulture as mulching material in farming systems has raised concerns about microplastics (MPs) in the agricultural landscape. MPs are emerging pollutants in croplands and water systems with significant ecological risks, particularly over the long term. In the soil systems, MPs polymer type, thinness, shape, and size induces numerous effects on soil aggregates, dissolved organic carbon (C), rapidly oxidized organic C, microbial biomass C, microbial biomass nitrogen (N), microbial immobilization, degradation of organic matter, N cycling, and production of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), thereby posing a significant risk of impairing soil physical and biochemical properties over time. Further, toxic chemicals released from polyethylene mulching (PMs) might indirectly harm plant growth by affecting soil wetting-drying cycles, releasing toxic substances that interact with soil matrix, and suppressing soil microbial activity. In the environment, accumulation of MPs poses a risk to human health by accelerating emissions of GHGs, e.g., methane and carbon dioxide, or directly releasing toxic substances such as phthalic acid esters (PAEs) into the soils. Also, larger sizes MPs can adhere to root surface and block stomata could significantly change the shape of root epidermal cells resulting in arrest plant growth and development by restricting water-nutrient uptake, and gene expression and altering the biodiversity of the soil pollutants. In this review, we systematically analyzed the potential risks of MPs to the soil-plant and human body, their occurrence, abundance, and migration in agroecosystems. Further, the impacts of MPs on soil microbial function, nutrient cycling, soil C, and GHGs are mechanistically reviewed, with emphasis on potential green solutions such as organic materials amendments along with future research directions for more eco-friendly and sustainable plastic management in agroecosystems.

Abstract:The term "microplastics" (MPs) refers to fine plastics less than 5 mm in size and includes primary sources from the original production of small-sized particles and secondary sources from the degradation or fragmentation of large plastics. MPs have been widely detected in marine (estuaries, bays, coastal zones. deep seas. ocean waters and sediments), soils (farmlands, urban soils, wetlands, landfill and polar areas). freshwater (lakes, rivers, reservoirs. snow and ice, and sewage treatment plants) and sediments. atmosphere (outdoor and indoor airs), living organisms (plants, animals, microorganisms, human and pet faeces), and foods (table salts, drinking waters. beers. vegetables and pet foods). Besides, MPs could be acted as the vector for many environmental pollutants, pathogens and even antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Moreover, MPs can be taken up by various terrestrial and aquatic organisms and transfer along the food chain at various trophic levels. Thus, environmental MP pollution is becoming one of the most serious threats to the Earth's surface ecosystems which has attracted serious concern and extensive research by many governments and the scientific community worldwide. Up to now, comprehensive studies and reports on the latest multidisciplinary research progress on microplastics in multiple environmental media remain limited. From the perspectives of earth sciences. chemistry, biology, and management, this article systematically reviews the research progress on the abundance, distribution and sources of microplastics in the waters. soils, atmosphere, sediments and organisms; the separation and analytical methods of microplastics in multiple environmental media; the migration and prediction of microplastics in terrestrial. marine and atmospheric environments; the surface changes and biofilm formation on microplastics and their adsorption characterization of environmental pollutants, pathogens and ARGs; the biological uptake, accumulation and ecological risks of MPs; the food chain transfer and health risks of MPs; the physico-chemical fragmentation and biodegradation of MPs in the environment and their risk reduction strategies and techniques. Finally, the key scientific issues and future research directions of environmental microplastics are also proposed in this review. such as methdology breakthroughs in separation and identification of submicron and nanoscale microplastics; comprehensive study on the distribution, migration. transport and flux of microplastics in environmental multi-media at cross-reginal and global scale; comprehensive monitoring. quantitative characterization and long-term evaluating the impacts of environmental microplastics on ecosystems; and the systematic assessment of human health risks of microplastics to different populations.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are small plastic particles with size < 5 mm. In recent years, MPs have received increasing public attention across the world because they are widely distributed in the environment, which has posed a potential threat to ecosystem and human health. This paper systematically reviewed the analysis methods of MPs including physical characterization (visual inspection, optical and electron microscopy) and chemical characterization (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and thermal analysis). To better grasp the research status and development trend of MPs, the characteristics, application range and a pros and cons of each analysis method were analyzed and compared. Aiming at the problems and shortcomings of analysis methods at present, further research needs were put forward. Furthermore, this critical review also covered current knowledge and research findings on the sources, distribution, environmental impacts of MPs in the soil, atmosphere and water. We found that current research of MPs was mainly focused on the aquatic environment. Based on research gaps, main recommendations for future research were proposed as well.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging as environmental pollutants and are widely distributed in aquatic environments. They are characterized by long life cycles, ease of migration, ability to adsorb other environmental pollutants, small size, and ease of ingestion by aquatic organisms, thereby threatening the growth, life, and health of aquatic organisms. MPs are biologically transferable and can accumulate in organisms at high trophic levels via food chains, thereby negatively impacting the ecological environment and human health. Moreover, the bioaccumulation of MPs is an important parameter for scientific risk assessments. This paper reviews the current status of MP pollution and its bioaccumulation in marine, freshwater, and other water environments. Furthermore, it proposes relevant recommendations for future research on the bioaccumulation of MPs in conjunction with previous studies to provide basic support for risk assessment and environmental management.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution (MPs, plastics with a particle size < 5 mm) has attracted worldwide attention. In the last five years, increased literature has pointed out that humans may unconsciously uptake a large number of MPs in daily life. However, the specific risks of MPs to humans and the biological mechanisms that underlie such effects remain to explore. This review categorizes MPs' potential health risks by focusing on the three primary pollution sources. An in-depth analysis of the pharmacokinetics (absorption-distribution-metabolism-excretion process), toxicity potential, and biological mechanism of MPs in the human body is then carried out, aiming to fill the gaps in knowledge regarding the toxicity of MPs on human health as well as provide ideas for scientists in the field of life science to repair the damage caused by MPs to the human body. Besides, chemical, physical, and biological factors that might influence the toxicity of MPs will be summarized and discussed further. This review will also propose control mechanisms and management strategies that could minimize such risk, which might cause a new round of technological changes in the polymer/plastic industries.

Abstract:Microplastic (MPs) pollution has become a global environmental concern with significant impacts on ecosystems and human health. Although MPs have been widely detected in aquatic environments, their presence in terrestrial ecosystems remains largely unexplored. This review examines the multifaceted issues of MPs pollution in terrestrial ecosystem, covering various aspects from additives in plastics to global legislation and sustainable solutions. The study explores the widespread distribution of MPs worldwide and their potential antagonistic interactions with co-occurring contaminants, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of their environmental implications. The influence of MPs on soil and plants is discussed, shedding light on the potential consequences for terrestrial ecosystems and agricultural productivity. The aging mechanisms of MPs, including photo and thermal aging, are elucidated, along with the factors influencing their aging process. Furthermore, the review provides an overview of global legislation addressing plastic waste, including bans on specific plastic items and levies on single-use plastics. Sustainable solutions for MPs pollution are proposed, encompassing upstream approaches such as bioplastics, improved waste management practices, and wastewater treatment technologies, as well as downstream methods like physical and biological removal of MPs. Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have become a global environmental concern because of their ubiquitous presence. While extensive microplastic researches have focused on the marine environment, pervasive MPs contamination in soil and their detrimental impacts have been largely overlooked. Excessive concentrations of MPs and additives have been found in soil derived from the use of plastic mulches and the application of sewage sludge to fields. They may pose directly or indirectly as adverse effects on flora and fauna. The objectives of this review are (1) to summarize the abundance, sources, and properties of MPs in soil; (2) to analyze combined effects of MPs and various other environmental pollutants on soil system; and (3) to discuss the possible risks posed by MPs to soil biodiversity, food safety and human health. This review will highlight key future research areas for scientists and policymakers, and increase overall understanding of soil MPs pollution and its potential environmental impacts.

Abstract:The global pollution of microplastics (MPs) has attracted widespread attention, and the atmosphere was an indispensable media for the global transmission of MPs. With the growing awareness of MPs, atmospheric microplastics (AMPs) have been proposed as a new topic in recent years. Compared with the extensive studies on MPs in Marine and terrestrial environments, the studies of AMPs remain limited. In this study, sampling and analysis methods, occurrence, source analysis and health risk of AMPs were summarized and discussed. According to the different sampling methods, AMPs can be divided into suspension microplastics (SAMPs) and deposition microplastics (DAMPs). Previous studies have shown that SAMPs and DAMPs differ in composition and abundance, with SAMPs generally having a higher fraction of fragments. The mechanism of the migration of AMPs between different media was not clear yet. We further collated global data on the composition characteristics of MPs in soil and fresh water, which showed that the fragment MPs in soil and fresh water was higher than that in the atmosphere. Polymers in soil and fresh water were mainly PP and PE, while AMPs in the atmosphere were mainly PET. The shape composition of the MPs in both atmospheric and freshwater systems suggests that there may be the same dominant factor. The transport of AMPs and source apportionment were the important issues of current research, but both of them were at the initial stage. Therefore, AMPs needs to be further studied, especially for the source and fate, which would be conducive to understand the global distribution of AMPs. Furthermore, a standardized manual on sampling and processing of AMPs was also necessary to facilitate the comparative analysis of data between different studies and the construction of global models.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), particles under 5 mm, pervade water, soil, sediment, and air due to increased plastic production and improper disposal, posing global environmental and health risks. Examining their distribution, quantities, fate, and transport is crucial for effective management. Several studies have explored MPs' sources, distribution, transport, and biological impacts, primarily focusing on the marine environment. However, there is a need for a comprehensive review of all environmental systems together for enhanced pollution control. This review critically examines the occurrence, distribution, fate, and transport of MPs in the following environments: freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. The concentration of MPs is highly variable in the environment, ranging from negligible to significant amounts (0.003–519.223 items/liter in water and 0–18,000 items/kg dry weight sediment, respectively). Predominantly, these MPs manifest as fibers and fragments, with primary polymer types including polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. A complex interplay of natural and anthropogenic actions, including wastewater treatment plant discharges, precipitation, stormwater runoff, inadequate plastic waste management, and biosolid applications, influences MPs' presence and distribution. Our critical synthesis of existing literature underscores the significance of factors such as wind, water flow rates, settling velocities, wave characteristics, plastic morphology, density, and size in determining MPs' transport dynamics in surface and subsurface waters. Furthermore, this review identifies research gaps, both in experimental and simulation, and outlines pivotal avenues for future exploration in the realm of MPs.

Optimization of technetium-99m Sestamibi single-photon emission tomography to define multidrug resistance with confidence

Abstract:BackgroundThe efflux rate of technetium-99m Sestamibi (99mTc-Sestamibi) is a kinetic phenomenon related to the response of cancer cells to chemotherapy, and may be used to determine drug resistance. Measurement of the efflux rate requires accurate quantitative single-photon emission tomography (SPET) imaging within the time constraints imposed by the kinetics of the process. MethodsA phantom study, at activity concentrations typically found with 99mTc-Sestamibi in vivo, was undertaken to optimize the SPET parameters and, in particular, to determine whether 180° acquisition arcs with heads in ‘L’ configuration could be used for accurate quantification. Following the development of the most appropriate SPET protocol, a small patient pilot study was undertaken. ResultsStudies designed to evaluate statistical uncertainty (noise), contrast restitution and spatial resolution of the data sets, using different acquisition and reconstruction parameters, showed that 180° SPET using a 64×64 matrix, 6° angular sampling and iterative reconstruction was optimal. Finer linear and/or angular sampling afforded negligible improvement in resolution, but markedly increased the statistical uncertainty. Comparison of 360° and 180° acquisitions, utilizing conventional filtered backprojection and iterative reconstruction algorithms, demonstrated that the statistical uncertainty was reduced to a greater extent for 180° data collection. For 360° (64×64) data acquisition, statistical uncertainty decreased from 15% to 11% using the iterative algorithm, whilst the 180° (64×64) data showed a reduction from 20% to 7%, and approached values obtained by planar imaging. The efflux measurements obtained in the patient pilot study were consistent with the observed chemotherapy response. ConclusionOur study shows that 180° acquisition arcs are a practical option for accurate quantitative SPET kinetic imaging for potential studies of chemotherapy response in patients with lung cancer.
Microplastic pollution and ecological risk assessment of Yueqing Bay affected by intensive human activities

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a widespread environmental problem posing ecological risks in the ocean. We investigated the abundance, spatial distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of MPs in surface seawater, sediments and organisms in Yueqing Bay, China. MPs were detected in both environmental media and organisms. The overall abundance (0.24 items/m 3 seawater, 6.13 items/kg dry sediment, 0.77 items/individual in organisms) was low to medium compared with other coastal areas. The MPs were mainly derived from the high-intensity mariculture and shipping in the bay, as well as industrial and human activities along the surrounding coast. The abundance of MPs in water of the left (western) bay (0.39 items/m 3 ) was considerably higher than that of the right (north-eastern) bay (0.07 items/m 3 ) due to the different levels of population and economic development on the left and right coasts. The ecological risk assessment showed generally low to medium risk from MPs pollution in Yueqing Bay, with higher ecological risk index ( H ) and potential ecological hazards ( RI ) of MPs polymers in water samples. These data emphasize the need for timely and effective action to reduce the contribution of intensive human activities to MPs pollution and provide information for further ecotoxicological studies, pollution control, and policy development of MPs. Environmental Implication Microplastics are widespread and have become an environmental problem that poses certain ecological risks. Some studies have investigated microplastic pollution in the ocean, but fewer have assessed the ecological risk. To fill this gap, we used the ecological risk assessment method to assess and warn of microplastic pollution in water, sediment and organisms. The sources and differential distribution of microplastics were also analysed and assessed from different aspects and perspectives, including human activities, land use types, population and economic development levels. Our study can provide effective information for subsequent ecotoxicological studies, pollution control and policy formulation on microplastics.

Abstract:The extensive application of plastic in human life brings about microplastic (MP) pollution in the environment. Identifying the potential sources of MPs is necessary to diminish its pollution. In this study, the occurrence, composition and distribution of MPs in the influents and effluents from 9 domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), 5 industrial WWTPs, wastewater of 10 industrial plants, 4 livestock farms and 4 fish ponds in China were investigated. Water samples were enzymatically treated followed by digestion with hydrogen peroxide and density separation. MPs were characterized using micro-Raman spectroscopy and were categorized by shape, size and color. Results showed that MP abundance in the influents and effluents of domestic WWTPs was 18-890 and 6-26 n·L-1, respectively, with the removal efficiency ranging from 35 to 98%. The effluents of industrial WWTPs contained 6-12 n·L-1 and the levels of MPs in the wastewater of industrial plants, livestock farms and fish ponds were in the range of 8-23, 8-40 and 13-27 n·L-1, respectively. No significant differences of MP abundance were demonstrated among effluents or wastewater of different sources, indicating they all constitute sources of MP pollution. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) made up almost 83% of the total MPs. Fragment and film were the most abundant shapes and the majority of MPs were smaller than 500 μm. Polymer type and shape in different sources did not vary statistically, however, there were slight differences among different sources concerning size and color of MPs. This study could fill MP data gaps regarding different sources, guide future monitoring work and policy making.
