Abstract:Introduction During the last two years, many young people and adolescents in the Kyrgyz Republic started to visit specialists due to Non-suicidal self-harm. A significant rise in the amount of such cases allowed specialists from the Republican Center of Psychiatry in Bishkek to think about an "epidemic "of self-harming behavior. Non-suicidal self-harm (NSSH) is defined as repeated, deliberate, direct injury to the body without suicidal intent that is not socially acceptable (Nixon et al., 2002) to reduce psychological discomfort in the absence of a conscious intention to take one's life (ICD-10 codes X60-X84, and ICD-11 codes PB80-PD3Z). Objectives To determine the causes of NSSH among adolescents and young adults who approached specialists in mental health sphere at Institute of Behavioral Health at the American University of Central Asia. Methods Over two years, forty-five adolescents and young adults under twenty-five who had committed self-harm visited specialists from the Behavioral Health Institute at the American University of Central Asia. All the patients received either dialectical behavioral treatment or cognitive processing treatment, medication (paroxetine) was used in three cases. Results Thirty patients were girls under twenty-one, and fifteen were boys and young male adults. The overwhelming majority (40 people) had self-inflicted cuts, two had imposed burns with matches and cigarettes, and one had used self-suffocation without a bond. Reasons for self-harm were the following: releasing internal tension and anxiety, getting some rest from intrusive thoughts, relieving the inner pain, and a desire to "feel as a whole person." All the patients underlined that they did not want to attract attention from their family members; moreover, they tried to hide the consequences of self-harm. Teens and young adults (twelve patients) from Kyrgyz traditional families visited a consultant or psychiatrist after a long drive through conventional or religious healers. All of the patients knew that they were addicted to self-harm, wanted to stop a problematic behavior, and could not stop it on their own. Ten patients have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Two of them also had eating disorders. Five patients had PTSD, and five had social phobia. The others had recognizable anxiety symptoms. Conclusions The enormous rise of non-suicidal self-harm is a phenomenon that needs further research. Abstract:Suicidal ideation and self-harm behaviors have been found to be important risk factors for suicide. The aim of this study was to explore the rates of psychiatric disorders among different groups of patients with suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and non-suicidal self-harm behaviors and to identify the associated socio-demographic and clinical variables. We conducted a cross-sectional study with emergency-admitted patients presenting with non-suicidal self-harm behaviors, suicide attempts, or suicidal ideation to the emergency room of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Data were collected from the patients’ charts using a questionnaire that contained socio-demographic and clinical variables. A total of 95 patients aged between 6 and 18 years were included in the study. Ingesting medication and cutting were the most frequently used methods to attempt suicide. Depression and mixed affective and conduct disorders were the diagnoses most commonly associated with suicidal behavior. Girls with depressive symptoms were more probable to have suicide attempts than boys, and girls with depressive symptoms and behavioral problems registered more self-harm behaviors. Further research should systematically examine the relationship between self-harm behaviors and suicide attempts and the profile of patients at risk of future suicide attempts.

Abstract:The article deals with the issue of suicidal behavior in children and adolescents in the context of the realities of modern society. There has been an increase in juvenile suicides in Russia in recent years, with an overall average decrease in suicide rates. An attempt is made to consider these facts in the context of social and biological aspects affecting the formation of behavioral disorders. The phenomenon of «fragmentary» or «clip» thinking, characteristic of the modern youth subculture, as well as the role of social and neurobiological factors in the formation of suicidal behavior, is discussed. The results of a retrospective analysis of complex posthumous forensic psychological and psychiatric examinations of completed suicides of children and adolescents in the Republic of Buryatia for the period 2012–2016 are presented. It has been found that male teenagers (15–17 years old) who lived in rural areas, were brought up in single-parent families, and studied at a secondary school predominate. In 21.8 % of cases, there was a history of suicide in close relatives and every fifth suicidal child had signs of suicidal behavior earlier (suicidal statements, attempts, interest in the topic of suicide). In most of the studied cases, family conflicts were the probable causes of suicidal behavior. It is concluded that in order to analyze the issue of suicide in children and adolescents, a comprehensive assessment of social, ethno-cultural, and biological factors is necessary.
Clinical and psychosocial characteristics related to self-harm in adolescent admitted to psychiatric wards in Korea: a retrospective chart review

Abstract:Background: Self-harm is an important public health problem with increasing incidences among adolescents for over a decade. This study aimed to identify factors associated with self-harm in adolescent psychiatric inpatients in Korea. We also investigated clinical characteristics associated with nonsuicidal self-injury disorder (NSSI-D) and suicidal behavior disorder (SBD) according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 criteria.Methods: This retrospective study included 215 adolescents aged between 12 to 18 years, who were admitted to the psychiatric ward of Samsung Medical Center, Seoul, Korea, from January 2014 to February 2021. Participants were divided into three groups according to NSSI-D and SBD diagnostic criteria. Collected data were analyzed using chi-square test and analysis of variance test.Results: Overall, 57.7% of the participants (n=124) reported self-harm at least once in their lives. Patients with self-harm were more likely to have experienced parental conflict, parent-child relational problems, and verbal, physical, or sexual abuse. Among the three groups divided according to NSSI-D and SBD diagnostic criteria, patients with both NSSI-D and SBD were more likely to have experienced parent-child relational problems than those with either NSSI-D only or SBD only.Conclusion: This study shows that parent-child relational problem is associated with high incidences of selfharm. Especially, the parent-child relational problem seemed to be a risk factor for SBD among patients with NSSI-D. These are important findings that provide an understanding of the self-harm characteristics and therefore improve prevention and treatment strategies in psychiatric adolescent patients.

Abstract:Suicide and self-harm are major public health concerns for adolescents globally, but there is a dearth of related research in West Africa. This study aims to examine the prevalence and associated factors for self-harm, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among adolescents in the West African country of Mali. A questionnaire survey was conducted among adolescents attending school or university in August 2019 in Bamako, the capital of Mali. Logistical constraints necessitated convenience sampling. Outcome measures were self-harm and suicide ideation and attempts. Predictor variables included sociodemographic characteristics, bullying and mental health problems. There were 606 respondents who completed questionnaires; their mean age was 16.1 (SD = 2.4); 318 (52.5%) were identified as male; and 44.4% reported self-harm at some point in their life, with 21% reporting suicide ideation and 9.7% actual suicide attempts. For all three outcomes, older age, knowing somebody personally who had experienced self-harm or taken their own life, moderate to severe depression or anxiety, and being a victim of bullying were highly significant risk factors for self-harm, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in these adolescents, while high self-esteem decreased the risk. The study suggests that self-harm and suicidal behaviour are relatively common in Malian adolescents who are still in education. However, much more research is needed to better understand this phenomenon.

Abstract:Suicidality (meaning ideation, self-harm and attempt to suicide) are major public health problems in adolescence and represent a worldwide public health concern. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), often simply called self-injury, is the act of harming your own body on purpose, for example by cutting or burning yourself. NNSI is a common mental health threat among adolescents and it's usually not meant as a suicide attempt. Unfortunately, suicide is the second most common cause of death in young people worldwide and represents a public health problem. For this reason, we analyzed retrospective data from patients admitted in the Psychiatric Hospital from July 1st 2023 to June 30th 2024 to identify clinical features, risk factors of suicidality by analyzing the assessment we administered at time of hospitalization: Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Ask Suicide Questionnaire (ASQ), G.T. MSRS scale. Within the 50 subjects of the sample, 30 patients attempt to suicide (60%); the large majority (90%) met the criteria for mixed state. This study shows that there is a high prevalence of mixed states in the inpatient unit admission, which is demonstrated both from the prescription of mood stabilizers, and confirmed by the diagnosis of mixed states rated with the scale. The use of structured interview with patient and families add on assessment suicide risk scale are fundamental, in order to guide a tailored psychopharmacological treatment, and improve prognosis.
The epidemiology of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior, a non-systematic narrative review

Abstract:В ackground : Non-suicidal self-injury, as a type of auto-aggression, is a widespread behavioral problem among adolescents. Researchers have noted an increase in the number of self-harm in recent years. The aim of the work : to conduct a narrative review of the scientific literature on the epidemiology of auto-aggression and non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. Method : The article presents a narrative review of domestic and foreign literature on the epidemiology of non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (NSSI). Articles were selected and analyzed in the databases MEDLINE/PubMed, Elibrary.ru, Scopus. To obtain basic information, publications from 2015 to 2022 were used, in international medical journals, as well as relevant references in the reference lists of the analyzed sources. At the same time, early publications on the subject were included for general information, definitions, and historical hindsight. The search was conducted using various variations of the specified keywords. Results : NSSI is most common in adolescents and young adults, and the age of onset has been reported to be most common between 12 and 14 years of age. There is no unambiguously accurate estimate of the prevalence of NSSI, when studying the literature, the prevalence is estimated to be in a wide range from 7.5 to 46.5% among adolescents. According to foreign meta-analyses, at present the average percentage of adolescents who have resorted to self-harm is from 16.9% to 19.5% and tends to increase. The prevalence of the phenomenon has increased greatly with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Conclusion : Auto-aggressive behavior, self-injurious behavior, and non-suicidal self-harm are now common among adolescents. It should be noted that the prevalence rates of this phenomenon remain insufficiently studied and are presented by studies for Western countries, there is still a lack of data in studies of the adolescent population of the Russian Federation due to the low level of knowledge of the phenomenon in the country.

Abstract:Purpose . To identify the aspects of suicide mortality of the child population of the Russian Federation and to propose directions for its prevention. Materials and methods . An analysis of official data on the incidence of suicide deaths and injuries with uncertain intentionsin children of various age groups and in the context of the Russian Federation constituent entities was carried out. Special attention of suicide death age structure was paid to adolescents aged 15–17 years. The proportion of suicides among children due to external causes of death was determined. Results . The incidence of suicide in children and adolescents depends on age, gender, and place of residence: in general, boys and urban residents dominated among the dead; suicide cases were recorded starting from the age group 5–9 years, more than two thirds of them were in the 15–17 age group; suicide rates among external causes of child death increased with age, were higher in girls and in rural areas; all the indicators studied had regional characteristics. Suicide mortality of children higher than the all-Russian level was recorded in the Volga, Siberian and Far Eastern, and at the age of 15–17 years — in the Southern, North Caucasus and Ural Federal Districts. Conclusion . The characteristics of suicide mortality of children its social conditionality should be taken into account in the preventive measures’ formation. An analysis of inaccurate and unspecified causes of children death is important; intensive development of medical and social assistance and introduction of modern technologies of medical and social support for children and adolescents; using the principles of intersectoral and interdepartmental interaction to identify and strengthen State control over improper parenting; raising the social responsibility of parents.
Analysis of risk factors of non-suicidal self-harm behavior in adolescents with depression

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Adolescents are a high-risk group for non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which seriously affects their physical and mental health. This study aimed to explore the risk factors for depressive adolescents with NSSI.METHODS: A total of 153 adolescents with depression were divided into the NSSI group (n=65) and non-NSSI group (n=88) according to the criteria stipulated by Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5). The Beck scale for suicidal ideation (BSS), adolescent self-rating life events checklist (ASLEC), family adaptability and cohesion evaluation scale II-Chinese version (FACES II-CV), childhood trauma questionnaire short form (CTQ SF), and multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) were applied to evaluate suicidal ideation, frequency and intensity of stressful life events, family functions, childhood trauma, and perceived support, respectively. We applied two-dimensional logistic regression to identify risk factors for NSSI.RESULTS: Female gender ratio, suicidal ideation, and attempted suicide were significantly higher in the NSSI group than in the non-NSSI group (all P<0.05). Scores of interpersonal relationships in ASLEC, emotional abuse, and emotional neglect in the CTQ-SF were significantly higher in the NSSI group than those in the non-NSSI group (all P<0.001). The scores of family cohesion (P=0.001) and family adaptability (P=0.01) were significantly lower in the NSSI group than in the non-NSSI group. The MSPSS was used to assess support from the family, and the index was significantly lower in the NSSI group (P<0.001). After adjusting for age and gender, BSS score, interpersonal relationship score, emotional abuse score, and emotional neglect score were identified as independent risk factors for NSSI.CONCLUSIONS: The rate of NSSI in adolescents with depression is high. Higher scores of BSS, interpersonal relationship, emotional abuse, and neglect were independently associated with NSSI.

Abstract:Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant predictor of completed suicide and is increasingly recognized as a serious public health concern. Multiple factors, including social, familial, mental, and genetic factors could influence the occurrence of this behavior. Identifying the early risk factors is important for screening and preventing this behavior. Methods: Here, we recruited a total of 742 adolescent inpatient participants from a mental health center and conducted a series of diagnostic interviews and questionnaires to assess NSSI behavior and other events. Bivariate analysis was used to detect differences between groups in NSSI and non-NSSI. Then, binary logistic regression was fitted to identify predictors of NSSI as a function of these questionnaire scores. Results: Of the 742 adolescents examined, a total of 382 (51.5%) participants engaged in NSSI. Bivariate analysis showed that age, gender, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and childhood trauma was significantly associated with NSSI. Logistic regression results suggested that females had 2.43 higher odds of engaging in NSSI when compared to their male counterparts (OR = 3.43, 95%CI = 2.09–5.74, p = 1.70 × 10 −6 ). Depression was a primary risk predictor for NSSI with each additional increase in symptoms of depression increasing the odds of engaging in NSSI by 18% (OR = 1.18, 95%CI = 1.12–1.25, p = 2.25 × 10 −8 ). Conclusion: More than half of the adolescent inpatients with psychiatric disorders have NSSI experience. Depression and gender were the risk factors for NSSI. Age at a specific range had a high prevalence of NSSI.

Abstract:Background : suicidal behavior, intentional self-harm and non-suicidal self-harm are important precursors of suicide in children and adolescents. The objective : to determine the prevalence and structure of non-suicidal self-harm, as well as the relationship of non-suicidal self-harming behavior with aggression, anxiety and depression in a non-clinical group of young men of military age. Participants and methods : the object of the study was 507 young men (from 18 to 27 years old). The average age of the examined was 19.32 years (± 2.35). Assessment of non-suicidal self-harm was carried out using a clinical interview and the scale of self-harming behavior (Polskaya N.A., 2014). The analysis of patterns of aggressive behavior was carried out with the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) to identify the propensity to aggression, the assessment of anxiety and depression level was assessed on Beck Anxiety and Depression Scales (BAI; BDI). Results : the study showed a high prevalence of non-suicidal selfharm in the non-clinical population of young people (33.9%). Instrumental self-harm was committed at least once in a lifetime by 14.7% of the surveyed, somatic — 19.2%. The most common acts of instrumental self-harm are blows with a fist, foot, head or body body on hard surfaces and cuts with cutting objects. From somatic — biting nails and lips, biting cheeks and tongue, combing the skin and creating obstacles to wound healing were the most frequent. As a result of the correlation analysis of the links of acts of self-harm with the domains of the scale of propensity to aggression from instrumental self-harm, a significant positive correlation was found in relation to self-burns. Punching your body and pulling out your hair turned out to be associated with all domains of the aggression scale. Self-harming was accompanied by depressive symptoms. Symptoms of anxiety correlate with somatic self-harm — punching your body, scratching your skin and biting your cheeks or tongue. Conclusion : non-suicidal self-harm showed positive correlations with manifestations of aggression, anxiety and depression. Effective and evidence-based prevention programs can be implemented at the population, subpopulation and individual levels to timely identify self-harming behavior. At the stage of psychiatric examination of young people, it is advisable to include in the complex of psychodiagnostic methods scales aimed at identifying self-harm, anxiety, depression and aggressive behavior.

Abstract:Objective: This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the global lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal behavior, deliberate self-harm and non-suicidal self-injury in children and adolescents. Methods: A systematic search for relevant articles published between 1989 to 2018 was performed in multiple electronic databases. The aggregate 12-month and lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior, deliberate self-harm, and non-suicidal self-injury were calculated based on the random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were performed to compare the prevalence according to school attendance and geographical regions. Results: A total of 686,672 children and adolescents were included. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicide attempts was 6% (95% CI: 4.7–7.7%) and 4.5% (95% CI: 3.4–5.9%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal plan was 9.9% (95% CI: 5.5–17%) and 7.5% (95% CI: 4.5–12.1%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of suicidal ideation was 18% (95% CI: 14.2–22.7%) and 14.2% (95% CI: 11.6–17.3%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury was 22.1% (95% CI: 16.9–28.4%) and 19.5% (95% CI: 13.3–27.6%) respectively. The aggregate lifetime and 12-month prevalence of deliberate self-harm was 13.7% (95% CI: 11.0–17.0%) and 14.2% (95% CI: 10.1–19.5%) respectively. Subgroup analyses showed that full-time school attendance, non-Western countries, low and middle-income countries, and geographical locations might contribute to the higher aggregate prevalence of suicidal behaviors, deliberate self-harm, and non-suicidal self-injury. Conclusions: This meta-analysis found that non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal ideation, and deliberate self-harm were the three most common suicidal and self-harm behaviors in children and adolescents.

Abstract:BACKGROUND. Although previous studies have shown that deviant predisposition is an important risk factor for non-suicidal self-harming behavior, the reasons for this relationship are unclear. AIM. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of deviant behavior, the level of depression and the desire to search for new sensations in adolescents with non-suicidal self-harming behavior. MATERIALS AND METHODS. At the first stage, 154 adolescents with a history of self-harming behavior were examined. At the second stage, using the Colombian Scale of Severity of suicidal Intentions, 149 adolescents with only non-suicidal self-harming behavior were selected from the entire sample (31.50% of them boys and 68.50% of girls, the average age was 16.35 years; SD=1.15). The study excluded 5 adolescents who had self-harmed for suicidal purposes. Columbia Scale of severity of suicidal intentions, Razuvaeva Suicide Risk Questionnaire, Bass–Perry Aggression Level Questionnaire, Diagnostic questionnaire to identify the propensity to various forms of deviant behavior for students of general education institutions, A. Beck’s depression questionnaire, Diagnosis of the needs of new sensations by M. Zuckerman, methods of descriptive statistics, r-Spearman correlation analysis. RESULTS. Persons prone to aggressive behavior in general are more likely to show inconsistency, demonstrativeness, poorly developed time perspective and uniqueness. Teenagers who have a poor idea of the future (a weak time perspective) are characterized by a high level of general aggressiveness, hostility, physical aggression, as well as a desire to search for sensations. Adolescents with depressive syndrome with feelings of insolvency, helplessness, are prone to deviant behavior in general, and to the search for new sensations. CONCLUSION. The correlation analysis revealed statistically significant correlations of aggression, autoaggression, deviant behavior, desire for sensation seeking and depression in adolescents. The results of our study provide the basis for an intervention aimed at preventing and reducing adolescent NSSP and deviant behavior in general.

Clinical Characteristics and Self-Harm in Forensic Psychiatric Patients

Abstract:Self-harm, comprising non-suicidal self-injury, and suicide attempts, is a serious and potentially life-threatening behavior that has been associated with poor life quality and an increased risk of suicide. In forensic populations, increased rates of self-harm have been reported, and suicide is one of the leading causes of death. Aside from associations between self-harm and mental disorders, knowledge on self-harm in forensic psychiatric populations is limited. The purpose of this study was to characterize the clinical needs of a cohort of forensic psychiatric patients, including self-harm and possible risk factors thereof. Participants ( N = 98) were consecutively recruited from a cohort of forensic psychiatric patients in Sweden from 2016 to 2020. Data were collected through file information, self-reports, and complemented with semi-structured interviews. Results showed that self-harm was common among the participants, more than half (68.4%) of whom had at some point engaged in self-harm. The most common methods of non-suicidal self-injury were banging one's head or fist against a wall or other solid surface and cutting, and the most common method of suicide attempt was hanging. The most prominent functions of non-suicidal self-injury among the participants were intrapersonal functions such as affect regulation, self-punishment, and marking distress. Self-harm in general was associated to neurodevelopmental disorders ( p = 0.014, CI = 1.23–8.02, OR = 3.14) and disruptive impulse-control and conduct disorders ( p = 0.012, CI = 1.19–74.6, OR = 9.41), with reservation to very wide confidence intervals. Conclusions drawn from this study are that self-harm was highly prevalent in this sample and seems to have similar function in this group of individuals as in other studied clinical and non-clinical groups.

Abstract:Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a major public health concern among adolescents. Further research is needed into contributors to this behavior, in particular among adolescents with psychiatric disorders. The aim of the present study was to explore the impact of life events and emotional stress on NSSI among hospitalized psychiatric adolescents. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 505 Chinese psychiatric adolescent inpatients 10–19 years old completed questionnaires about sociodemographic characteristics and NSSI as well as the Adolescent Self-Rating Life Events Checklist (ASLEC), the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. Chi-square test was used to compare the incidence of NSSI in psychiatric adolescent patients with different sociodemographic. T -test was used to compare the total scores and dimension scores of the ASLEC, STAI-Y, and CES-D between the NSSI group and the non-NSSI group. A binary logistic regression model was built to explore the relationships among sociodemographic characteristics, questionnaire scores and NSSI. Results: Most psychiatric adolescent inpatients (393, 77.8%) reported NSSI behavior. The higher risk for NSSI was observed among female (odds ratio [OR] 2.665, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.575–4.510), younger adolescents (10–14 years; OR 2.021, 95% CI 1.258–3.245), with a suicide history (OR 2.479, 95% CI 1.549–3.967), or with depression symptom (OR 3.217, 95% CI 1.572–6.582) and those with higher scores of ASLEC (OR 1.019, 95% CI 1.010–1.029). Conclusion: Our study in China is one of the first to apply to adolescent inpatients the diagnostic criteria of NSSI in the latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders . Our analysis suggests that NSSI prevalence is disturbingly high among adolescents with mental illness in China. A better understanding of contributing factors, especially negative life events and negative emotions, may guide interventions that can reduce its prevalence.

Abstract:Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has attracted more and more attention from schools, mental health workers and even the whole society in China. The aim of this study was to explore influencing factors and clinical characteristics of NSSI in adolescent psychiatric patients in China, and provide valuable information for the intervention and treatment of NSSI. Methods: The sample included 157 adolescents, 114 were female (72.6%), aged 12–18 years ( M = 15.39, SD = 1.81). Assessments were performed using Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form, the Revised Olweus Bully/Victim Questionnaire, the modified version of Adolescents Self-Harm Scale, Montgomery–Asberg Depression Rating Scale, Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Clinical characteristics were collected from electronic medical record system. Results: Adolescent patients with NSSI experienced more adverse life events including peer bullying, childhood trauma and romantic relationship trouble. They had more times of hospitalization, higher dosage of psychotic medication, and more severe depressive symptoms. Conclusions: It is very necessary to evaluate negative life events, including childhood trauma, peer bullying etc., in adolescent patients with NSSI. It has important clinical implications for evaluating the risk factors of NSSI and giving effective intervention treatment. Timely and effective treatment of these patients' depressive symptoms will also contribute to the relief of NSSI.

Self-harm and suicide death in the three years following hospitalization for intentional self-harm in adolescents and young adults: A nationwide study

Abstract:Self-harm is frequent in youths. This study aimed to assess the risk of self-harm and mortality over a three-year period following self-harm hospitalization. Data were extracted from national databases in France. All patients aged 12 to 24 years and hospitalized for self-harm in 2013–2014 were included and compared to age- and sex-matched individuals with no self-harm hospitalization during this period. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used. Overall, 34,533 individuals were hospitalized for self-harm in 2013–2014 (70.8 % females, 79.6 % self-poisoning), with a peak among females aged 14–16. Comparison with 103,599 matched controls showed significantly higher rates of past self-harm, somatic and psychiatric disorders, and dispensed drugs in youth hospitalized for self-harm. During follow-up, they significantly more often repeated self-harm (20.9 vs. 0.1 %), died from any cause (0.6 vs 0.03 %) and from suicide (0.2 vs 0.01 %), particularly during the first year. The choice of a violent self-harm means at inclusion increased the risk of suicide during follow-up. Psychiatric disorders were a significant risk factor for all outcomes. In conclusion, at least one in five youths will self-harm, and one in two hundred will die in the three years following hospitalization for self-harm. Reinforced follow-up care is necessary in this population.
