Abstract:The fundamental understanding of electrochemistry urges accurate knowledge of all interfacial properties at the molecular level, but the retrieval of such information is a real challenge. Optical spectroscopies facilitated by surface plasmon enhancement can shed light on this field, yet past studies relied on either highly inhomogeneous "hot spots" or planar plasmon modes with limited enhancement. Here we report an in situ sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy scheme using plasmonic nanogratings, which enable strong, coherent surface plasmon excitation even on planar electrodes. With two classical reactions, the gold oxidation and pyridine adsorption in water, we demonstrate the realization of coherent vibrational spectroscopy in the strong absorption region, revealing the polar orientation and ordering of interfacial species that are crucial toward the mechanistic understanding of electrochemical phenomena.

Abstract:Carbon sphere with uniform size is prepared through a simple and green hydrothermal method. Ag particles are loaded on the carbon sphere surface to form a novel plasmonic photocatalyst C@Ag. C@Ag shows two times activity than single Ag component in de-coloration of rhodamine B (Rh.B), and indicates higher performance than P25-N. 85% Rh. B was decolored after 180 minutes. Carbon sphere not only enhances the photocatalytic activity, but also reduces the cost of noble Ag metal. In addition, hydroxyl radical is detected and it acts as important active species during plasmonic photocatalytic reaction.
Accelerating Photoelectric CO2 Conversion with a Photothermal Wavelength-Dependent Plasmonic Local Field

Abstract:The fabrication of an efficient and low-cost photocathode still remains a big challenge. We herein report a Ag/ CuxO@rGO/Mo photocathode for CO2 conversion. A unique wavelength-dependent performance is found to enhance the formation of the key intermediate groups by exciting photothermal local surface plasmonic resonance (LSPR) using the lights with wavelengths ranging from 550 to 600 nm. CO, H2 and CH4 can be stably produced with dual photoelectrodes using a neutral solution. An unbiased solar-to-gaseous-carbon-fuel efficiency (SGCF) of 0.51 % has been achieved, which sets a record for carbon gas fuel production with binary photoelectrodes. In addition, the CO/H2 ratio could be tuned in the range from 0.65 to 1.84, which makes it possible to fine tune the syngas production. The excellent PEC CO2 reduction capability achieved by the new wavelengthdependent catalytic route may shine some lights for the future design and development of the next-generation PEC materials and devices.
Unraveling Surface Plasmon Decay in Core-Shell Nanostructures Toward Broadband Light-Driven Catalytic Organic Synthesis.

Abstract:Harnessing surface plasmon of metal nanostructures to promote catalytic organic synthesis holds great promise in solar-to-chemical energy conversion. High conversion efficiency relies not only on broadening the absorption spectrum but on coupling the harvested energy into chemical reactions. Such coupling undergoes hot-electron transfer and photothermal conversion during the decay of surface plasmon; however, the two plasmonic effects are unfortunately entangled, making their individual roles still under debate. Here, we report that in a model system of bimetallic Au-Pd core-shell nanostructures the two effects can be disentangled through tailoring the shell thickness at atomic-level precision. As demonstrated by our ultrafast absorption spectroscopy characterizations, the achieved tunability of the two effects in a model reaction of Pd-catalyzed organic hydrogenation offers a knob for enhancing energy coupling. In addition, the two intrinsic plasmonic modes at 400-700 and 700-1000 nm in the bar-shaped nanostructures allow for utilizing photons to a large extent in full solar spectrum. This work establishes a paradigmatic guidance toward designing plasmonic-catalytic nanomaterials for enhanced solar-to-chemical energy conversion.
Ultrafast Dynamics of Plasmon-Exciton Interaction of Ag Nanowire-Graphene Hybrids for Surface Catalytic Reactions

Abstract:Using the ultrafast pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy, the femtosecond-resolved plasmon-exciton interaction of graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids is experimentally investigated, in the VIS-NIR region. The plasmonic lifetime of Ag nanowire is about 150 femtosecond (fs). For a single layer of graphene, the fast dynamic process at 275 fs is due to the excitation of graphene excitons, and the slow process at 1.4 picosecond (ps) is due to the plasmonic hot electron interaction with phonons of graphene. For the graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids, the time scale of the plasmon-induced hot electron transferring to graphene is 534 fs, and the metal plasmon enhanced graphene plasmon is about 3.2 ps in the VIS region. The graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids can be used for plasmon-driven chemical reactions. This graphene-mediated surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate significantly increases the probability and efficiency of surface catalytic reactions co-driven by graphene-Ag nanowire hybridization, in comparison with reactions individually driven by monolayer graphene or single Ag nanowire. This implies that the graphene-Ag nanowire hybrids can not only lead to a significant accumulation of high-density hot electrons, but also significantly increase the plasmon-to-electron conversion efficiency, due to strong plasmon-exciton coupling.

Uncovering Photoelectronic and Photothermal Effects in Plasmon‐Mediated Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Abstract:Plasmon-mediated electrocatalysis that rests on the ability of coupling localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and electrochemical activation, emerges as an intriguing and booming area. However, its development seriously suffers from the entanglement between the photoelectronic and photothermal effects induced by the decay of plasmons, especially under the influence of applied potential. Herein, using LSPR-mediated CO2 reduction on Ag electrocatalyst as a model system, we quantitatively uncover the dominant photoelectronic effect on CO2 reduction reaction over a wide potential window, in contrast to the leading photothermal effect on H2 evolution reaction at relatively negative potentials. The excitation of LSPR selectively enhances the CO faradaic efficiency (17-fold at −0.6 VRHE) and partial current density (100-fold at −0.6 VRHE), suppressing the undesired H2 faradaic efficiency. Furthermore, in situ attenuated total reflection-surface enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) reveals a plasmon-promoted formation of the bridge-bonded CO on Ag surface via a carbonyl-containing C1 intermediate. The present work demonstrates a deep mechanistic understanding of selective regulation of interfacial reactions by coupling plasmons and electrochemistry.

Abstract:Plasmonic photocatalysis demonstrates great potential for efficiently harnessing light energy. However, the underlying mechanisms remain enigmatic due to the transient nature of the reaction processes. Typically, plasmonic photocatalysis relies on the excitation of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) in plasmonic materials, such as metal nanoparticles, leading to the generation of high-energy or "hot electrons", albeit accompanied by photothermal heating or Joule effect. The ability of hot electrons to participate in chemical reactions is one of the key mechanisms, underlying the enhanced photocatalytic activity observed in plasmonic photocatalysis. Interestingly, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy allows the analysis of chemical reactions driven by hot electrons, as both SERS and hot electrons stem from the decay of SPR and occur at the hot spots. Herein, we propose a highly efficient SERS substrate based on cellulose paper loaded with either Ag nanoplates (Ag NPs) or AgPd hollow nanoplates (AgPd HNPs) for the in situ monitoring of C-C homocoupling reactions. The data analysis allowed us to disentangle the impact of hot electrons and the Joule effect on plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis. Computational simulations revealed an increase in the rate of excitation of hot carriers from single/isolated AgPd HNPs to an in-plane with a vertical stacking assembly, suggesting its promise as a photocatalyst under broadband light. In addition, the results suggest that the incorporation of Pd into an alloy with plasmonic properties may enhance its catalytic performance under light irradiation due to the collection of plasmon-excitation-induced hot electrons. This work has demonstrated the performance-oriented synthesis of hybrid nanostructures, providing a unique route to uncover the mechanism of plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have been proved effective not only in catalyzing chemical reactions, but also in improving the activity of non-plasmonic photocatalysts. It is essential to reveal the synergy between the plasmonic structure and the non-plasmonic metal photocatalyst for expounding the underlying mechanism of plasmon-enhanced catalysis. Herein, the enhancement of resazurin reduction at the heterostructure of silver nanowire (AgNW) and palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) is observed in situ by single-molecule fluorescence microscopy. The catalysis mapping results around single AgNW suggest that the catalytic activity of PdNPs is enhanced for ∼ 20 times due to the excitation of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the vicinity of the AgNW. This catalysis enhancement is also highly related to the wavelength and polarization of the excitation light. In addition, the palladium catalysis is further enhanced by ∼ 10 times in the vicinity of a roughened AgNW or a AgNW-AgNW nanogap because of the improvement of catalytic hotspots. These findings clarify the contribution of plasmon excitation in palladium catalysis at microscopic scale, which will help to deepen the understanding of the plasmon-enhanced photocatalysis and provide a guideline for developing highly efficient plasmon-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Plasmonic semiconductors with both features of metals and semiconductors are expected materials for solar light harvesting. Here, plasmonic semiconductor heterostructures were constructed by coupling pyroelectric black phosphorus (BP) and plasmonic tungsten oxides (WO) as photocatalyst for CO2 reduction. Intriguingly, under visible and near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, the plasmonic BP/WO heterostructures with optimal composition exhibit high-selective 26.1 μmol g-1h−1 CO generation (98 %), which is 7- and 17-fold higher than those of plasmonic WO and pyroelectric BP, respectively. The interface bonds (P-O-W) were detected by FTIR spectra and demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations as dominant channels for electron transfer from BP to WO. Plasmonic thermal effect of WO can increase the local temperature to 86 °C under visible and NIR light irradiation, triggering pyroelectric effect of BP and generating pyroelectric carriers, which enhance the electron transfer from BP to WO. Therefore, continuous electron injection from pyroelectric BP to WO enhances surface plasmon resonance for high-selective CO2 reduction. This work provides clear proofs to demonstrate that constructing pyroelectric effect on plasmonic heterostructures is one useful strategy to promote NIR-harvesting for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Plasmonic photo-electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is more efficient for converting CO2 into valuable chemicals than traditional photo and electrocatalysis. Advanced photo catalysts offer unique benefits of harvesting visible light while regulating the catalytic properties via optimized size, morphology, or composition. In this regard, exploring photoelectric synergistic catalysis with high activity and selectivity is critical. In addition to photoelectrochemical properties, suppressing side reactions like hydrogen evolution reaction is the main bottleneck in exploring CO2 reduction on the plasmonic photoelectrode for enhanced selectivity. This review concentrates on plasmonic materials towards electrochemical CO2 reactions, which provides a new strategy for CO2 conversion via synergy between visible light and electrocatalysis. The spatial visible light absorption of plasmonic nanomaterials for CO2 conversion in various sizes and shapes and composites with other metals or semiconductors is highlighted in detail. To further comprehend the mechanism and design more efficient plasmonic catalysts, operando/in-situ spectroscopy studies are presented to identify intermediate species during photo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction on the photoelectrode. We anticipate that this work will provide insights into understanding the mechanism of plasmonic photo-electrocatalytic CO2 conversion and fabrication of advanced catalysts.

Light-Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Activation and Conversion by Effective Plasmonic Coupling Effect of Pt and Au Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is attractive for the production of valuable fuels and mitigating the influence of greenhouse gas emission. However, the extreme inertness of CO2 and the sluggish kinetics of photoexcited charge carrier transfer process greatly limit the conversion efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we report that the plasmonic coupling effect of Pt and Au nanoparticles (NPs) profoundly enhances the efficiency of CO2 reduction through dry reforming of methane reaction assisted by light illumination, reducing activation energies for CO2 reduction ∼30% below thermal activation energies and achieving a reaction rate 2.4 times higher than that of the thermocatalytic reaction. UV-visible (vis) absorption spectra and wavelength-dependent performances show that not only UV but also visible light play important roles in promoting CO2 reduction due to effective localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) coupling between Pt and Au NPs. Finite-difference time-domain simulations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy further reveal that effective coupling LSPR effect generates strong local electric fields and excites high concentration of hot electrons to activate the reactants and intermediate species, reduce the activation energies, and increase the reaction rate. This work provides a new pathway toward the efficient plasmon-enhanced chemical reactions via reducing the activation energies by utilizing solar energy.

Abstract:Local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a novel catalytic technique that has emerged in recent years, especially in the catalysis of aromatic amine compounds. However, the response process and mechanism are still unclear in current study. In the current field of study, the response process and mechanism are still unclear. In this work, the gas–liquid-solid three-phase interface (GLSTI) was innovatively utilized in this study to validate the reaction mechanism by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. P-Aminothiophenol (PATP) and P-Phenylenediamine (PDA) underwent a surface plasmon-catalyzed reaction by using a silver nano-dendrites substrate with strong SERS activity. The GLSTI significantly facilitates the occurrence of surface plasmon catalytic reactions, which can supply enough oxygen by providing three-phase points. In situ SERS and EC-SERS technologies were combined in this study for the explorations. Therefore, this work is dedicated to deepening the exploration and expanding into new directions in plasmon-induced catalytic reactions.

Abstract:Converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into high-value-added chemicals using solar energy is a promising approach to reducing carbon dioxide emissions; however, single photocatalysts suffer from quick the recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs and poor photoredox ability. Herein, silver (Ag) nanoparticles featuring with localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are combined with g-C3N4 to form a Schottky junction for photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction. The Ag/g-C3N4 exhibits higher photocatalytic CO2 reduction activity under UV-vis light; the CH4 and CO evolution rates are 10.44 and 88.79 μmol·h−1·g−1, respectively. Enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction performances are attributed to efficient hot electron transfer in the Ag/g-C3N4 Schottky junction. LSPR-induced hot electrons from Ag nanoparticles improve the local reaction temperature and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. The charge carrier transfer route was investigated by in situ irradiated X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method verified the strong electromagnetic field at the interface between Ag and g-C3N4. The photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction pathway of Ag/g-C3N4 was investigated using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra (DRIFTS). This study examines hot electron transfer in the Ag/g-C3N4 Schottky junction and provides a feasible way to design a plasmonic metal/polymer semiconductor Schottky junction for photothermal catalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Abstract Highly efficient plasmon-driven catalysis and excellent surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) performance are proportional to the square of the local electromagnetic field (hot spot). However, a proven way to realize the enhancement in intensity and density of “hot spot” still needs to be investigated. Here, we report on multilayered Ag nanoparticle (Ag NP)/graphene coupled to an underlying Cu film system (MAgNP-CuF) which can be used as an effective SERS substrates realizing ultra-sensitive detection for toxic molecules and in situ monitoring the plasmon-driven reaction for p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) to p,p′-dimercaptobenzene (DMAB) conversion. The mechanism of ultra-sensitive SERS response and catalytic reaction is investigated via Ag NP/graphene layer-dependent experiments combined with theoretical simulations. The research found that the intensity and density of “hot spot” can be effectively manipulated by the number of plasmonic layers, and the bottom Cu film could also reflect the scattered and excitation beam and would further enhance the Raman signals. Moreover, the MAgNP-CuF exhibits outstanding performance in stability and reproducibility. We believe that this concept of multilayered plasmonic structures would be widely used not only in the field of SERS but also in the wider research in photocatalysis.

Abstract:Chemical processes driven by nonthermal energy (e.g., visible light) are attractive for future approaches to energy conversion, synthesis, photocatalysis, and so forth. The growth of anisotropic metal nanostructures mediated by excitation of a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is a prototype example of such a reaction. Important aspects, notably the growth mechanism and a possible role of plasmonic "hot spots" within the metal nanostructures, remain poorly understood. Here, we use in situ electron microscopy to stimulate and image the plasmon-mediated growth of triangular Ag nanoprisms in solution. The quantification of the time-dependent evolution of the lateral size and thickness of the nanoprisms, enabled by nanometer-scale real-time microscopy in solution, shows a transition from an early stage of uniform Ag0 incorporation exclusively in the prism side facets to a size regime with accelerated growth in thickness. Differences in attachment rate at this advanced stage correlate with local plasmonic field enhancements, which allows determining the range over which charge carriers transferred from plasmonic hot spots can drive chemistry. Such data support the development of nonthermal chemical processes that depend on plasmonic light harvesting and the transfer of nonequilibrium charge carriers.

Abstract:In the realm of plasmonic catalytic systems, much attention has been devoted to the plasmon-derived mechanisms, yet the influence of nanoparticles' crystal facets in this type of processes has been sparsely investigated. In this work, we study the plasmon-assisted electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction using three different shapes of plasmonic Au nanoparticles - nanocube (NC), rhombic dodecahedron (RD) and octahedron (OC) - with three different exposed facets: {100}, {110} and {111}, respectively. These particles were synthesized with similar sizes and LSPR wavelengths to reveal the role of the facet more than other contributions to the plasmon-assisted reaction. Upon plasmon excitation, Au OCs exhibited nearly a doubling in the Faradaic efficiency of CO (FE(CO)) and a remarkable threefold enhancement in the partial current density of CO (j(CO)) compared to the non-illuminated response, NCs also demonstrated an improved performance under illumination. In contrast, Au RDs showed nearly the same performance in dark or light conditions. Temperature-dependent experiments ruled out heat as the main factor in the enhanced response of Au OCs and NCs. Large-scale atomistic simulations of the nanoparticles' electronic structure and electromagnetic modeling revealed higher hot carrier abundance and electric field enhancement on Au OCs and NCs compared to RDs. Abundant hot carriers on edges facilitate molecular activation, leading to enhanced selectivity and activity. Thus, OCs with the highest edge/facet ratio exhibited the strongest enhancement in FE(CO) and j(CO) upon illumination. This observation is further supported by plasmon-assisted H2 evolution reaction experiments. Our findings highlight the dominance of low coordinated sites over facets in plasmonic catalytic processes, providing valuable insights for designing more efficient catalysts for solar fuels production.

Abstract:Surface Plasmon Resonance can be used to activate zinc oxide/copper catalysts in order to perform the carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction by means of light energy, avoiding high-temperature processes. The synthesis and impregnation methods have been designed to fill glass microreactors with ZnO/Cu nanoparticles supported on transparent silica aerogels to maximize the light absorbed by the catalyst. A LED device surrounding the glass microreactors provided white light to activate the catalyst homogeneously throughout the reactor. Temperature, pressure, amount of catalyst and gases flow were studied as possible variables to enhance the process trying to maximize CO2 conversion rates, achieving the best results working at high pressures. The use of transparent SiO2 Aerogels as supports for photocatalytic gas phase reactions even under high-pressure conditions is demonstrated.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures can produce the surface plasmon resonance under appropriate photoexcitation, which can be used to promote or facilitate chemical reactions, as well as photocatalytic materials, due to their strong plasmon resonance in the visible light region. In the current work, Ag/Au nanoislands (NIs) and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were designed, and their thermocatalysis performance was investigated using luminescence of Eu3+ as a probe. Compared with Ag NIs, the catalytic efficiency and stability of surface plasmons of Ag/Au NIs and Ag NIs/Au film composite systems were greatly improved. It was found that the metal NIs can also generate strong localized heat at low temperature environment, enabling the transition of NaYF4:Eu3+ to Y2O3: Eu3+, and anti-oxidation was realized by depositing gold on the surface of silver, resulting in the relative stability of the constructed complex.

Abstract:The application of surface plasmons in heterogeneous catalysis has attracted widespread attention due to their promising potential for harvesting solar energy. The effect of surface adsorbates on catalysts has been well documented in many traditional reactions; nonetheless, their role in plasmonic catalysis has been rarely studied. In this study, an in situ electrochemical surface cleaning strategy is developed and the influence of surface adsorbates on plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry is investigated. Taking Au nanocubes as an example, plasmonic catalysts with clean surfaces are obtained by Cu 2 O coating and in situ electrochemical etching. During this process, the surface adsorbates of Au nanocubes are removed together with the Cu 2 O shells. The Au nanocubes with clean surfaces exhibit remarkable performance in plasmon-enhanced electrooxidation of glucose and an enhancement of 445% is demonstrated. The Au NCs with clean surfaces can not only provide more active sites but also avoid halides as hole scavengers, and therefore, the efficient utilization of hot holes by plasmonic excitation is achieved. This process is also generalized to other molecules and applied in electrochemical sensing with high sensitivity. These results highlight the critical role of surface adsorbates in plasmonic catalysis and may forward the design of efficient plasmonic catalysts for plasmon-enhanced electrochemistry.
