Abstract:Pilot operational behaviour directly affects aviation safety, and exploring pilot behaviour can help decode, model, and predict pilot behavioural decisions. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize pilots' states and predict the behaviours responsible for state changes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between pilot operating behaviour and brain activity. Using a flight simulator (DA42) and noninvasive functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), changes in physiological signals were measured in 25 pilot cadets during different turning tasks. Twenty-five pilot cadets completed left and right turning tasks in a flight simulator, and the changes in blood oxygen concentration during different turning behaviours were analysed and modelled using machine learning models. Feature samples with significant differences ( ) were extracted from the changes in oxyhaemoglobin concentration and selected for input into the SVM-linear classification model, the best results were achieved for the recognition of the pilot's turning behaviour. After stratification based on feature importance, the SVM-RBF classification model obtained the highest accuracy (92.6%) after training with inputs containing a subset of features (60%) with the highest importance. In addition, the different turning behaviours of the pilots were closely related to activity in Brodmann area 17 (BA 17), BA 18 and BA 46. These findings provide insight into the neuroscientific mechanisms of pilot behaviour and provide an important physiological reference for improving pilot training.

Detection of Pilots' Psychological Workload during Turning Phases Using EEG Characteristics

Abstract:Pilot behavior is crucial for aviation safety. This study aims to investigate the EEG characteristics of pilots, refine training assessment methodologies, and bolster flight safety measures. The collected EEG signals underwent initial preprocessing. The EEG characteristic analysis was performed during left and right turns, involving the calculation of the energy ratio of beta waves and Shannon entropy. The psychological workload of pilots during different flight phases was quantified as well. Based on the EEG characteristics, the pilots' psychological workload was classified through the use of a support vector machine (SVM). The study results showed significant changes in the energy ratio of beta waves and Shannon entropy during left and right turns compared to the cruising phase. Additionally, the pilots' psychological workload was found to have increased during these turning phases. Using support vector machines to detect the pilots' psychological workload, the classification accuracy for the training set was 98.92%, while for the test set, it was 93.67%. This research holds significant importance in understanding pilots' psychological workload.
Pilots' mental workload variation when taking a risk in a flight scenario: a study based on flight simulator experiments

Abstract:Pilots' operation behavior in flight is associated with their mental state variables such as workload, situation awareness, stress, etc. The objective of this study was to investigate the dynamic process of mental workload for pilots who perform a risky flight task in simulated scenarios. Two empirical experiments were conducted to address this issue. In experiment one, 19 trainee pilots divided into high-risk and low-risk groups performed a target-search task in a low-altitude visual flight. The results showed a statistically significant interaction between groups and segments for heart rate variability (HRV). The same pattern of physiological results was replicated among participants in experiment two, in which 19 airline pilots completed an approach with low visibility. These findings highlighted the relationship between mental workload variation and risk-taking behavior, which could be considered in improving pilot selection and training to improve flight safety.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Er:YAG laser and conventional periodontal therapy in the treatment of acute streptococcal gingivitis both clinically and microbiologically. BACKGROUND DATA This case report describes a 2-year follow-up of a 30-year-old, female, chronic periodontitis patient, presenting severe gingival inflammation, sensitivity, pain, and acute gingival lesions that were treated with Er:YAG laser and conventional hand and ultrasonic instruments. MATERIALS AND METHODS Before the initial periodontal treatment, microbiological samples were taken from the lesion sites with sterile paper points from the sulcuses bilaterally, and excisional biopsies were obtained from the lesions. Following diagnostic tests, the lesions were identified as acute streptococcal gingivitis. Following the measurement of clinical indices, initial periodontal therapy was performed with Er:YAG laser on the right side and conventional hand and ultrasonic instruments on the left side, which were performed as two sessions at weekly intervals. As an adjunct to mechanical periodontal therapy, 500 mg amoxicillin was prescribed t.i.d. for a week. RESULTS Microbiological samples grew mostly Streptococcus sp. and black pigmented obligate anaerobic bacteria. The histopathological examination revealed acanthosis, papillomatosis, and spongiotic lesions in the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium; infiltration of polymorphonuclear neutrophils, lymphocytes, and macrophages and plasma cells in the connective tissue; infiltration and accumulation of polymorphonuclear neutrophils in the epithelium, especially in the spongiotic lesions; and formation of microabscess-like clusters. After the initial periodontal treatment, clinical and microbiological measurements were repeated and reductions in clinical indices and the number of microorganisms were observed. both treatment modalities gave similar results, and no recurrences were observed during the 2-year follow-up. CONCLUSION Er:YAG laser seems to be promising and as effective as conventional periodontal therapy in the treatment of acute streptococcal gingivitis.

Abstract:Pilots of aircraft face varying degrees of cognitive workload even during normal flight operations. Periods of low cognitive workload may be followed by periods of high cognitive workload and vice versa. During such changing demands, there exists potential for increased error on behalf of the pilots due to periods of boredom or excessive cognitive task demand. To further understand cognitive workload in aviation, the present study involved collection of electroencephalogram (EEG) data from ten (10) collegiate aviation students in a live-flight environment in a single-engine aircraft. Each pilot possessed a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commercial pilot certificate and either FAA class I or class II medical certificate. Each pilot flew a standardized flight profile representing an average instrument flight training sequence. For data analysis, we used four main sub-bands of the recorded EEG signals: delta, theta, alpha, and beta. Power spectral density (PSD) and log energy entropy of each sub-band across 20 electrodes were computed and subjected to two feature selection algorithms (recursive feature elimination (RFE) and lasso cross-validation (LassoCV), and a stacking ensemble machine learning algorithm composed of support vector machine, random forest, and logistic regression. Also, hyperparameter optimization and tenfold cross-validation were used to improve the model performance, reliability, and generalization. The feature selection step resulted in 15 features that can be considered an indicator of pilots' cognitive workload states. Then these features were applied to the stacking ensemble algorithm, and the highest results were achieved using the selected features by the RFE algorithm with an accuracy of 91.67% (± 0.11), a precision of 93.89% (± 0.09), recall of 91.67% (± 0.11), F-score of 91.22% (± 0.12), and the mean ROC-AUC of 0.93 (± 0.06). The achieved results indicated that the combination of PSD and log energy entropy, along with well-designed machine learning algorithms, suggest the potential for the use of EEG to discriminate periods of the low, medium, and high workload to augment aircraft system design, including flight automation features to improve aviation safety.

Abstract:Effective mental workload recognition is of great significance for improving task performance and reducing accidents. Although prior research has achieved approximately 95% accuracy using electroencephalography (EEG), it is difficult to transplant into actual task scenarios due to the low portability of the device. Here, we introduce a mental workload recognition solution to give consideration to high recognition accuracy and portability. Heart rate variability (HRV) was extracted from the electrocardiogram (ECG) signals of 26 participants during simulated flight tasks, and the sensitive features were screened out using the generalized linear mixed model. Then, the three mental workload levels were classified and evaluated in combination with the machine learning method. Our solution achieved an accuracy of 98% for subject-independent mental workload recognition.

Abstract:Situational awareness (SA) and fatigue management are crucial aspects of aviation safety, particularly during demanding flight phases. This study introduces an innovative approach employing flight data, machine learning, and Continuous Performance Test (CPT) metrics to predict pilot performance and SA during instrument approaches under Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC). Data were collected from over 10 pilots across more than 40 flights in a high-fidelity Cessna 172 analog flight simulator. Significant correlations were observed between dynamic cognitive performance parameters and the exceedance shape factor, a novel measure of pilot sustained attention introduced in this research. Key variables identified through correlation analysis included variability, interstimulus change, and reaction time standard deviation. Importantly, commission scores and reaction time standard deviation emerged as key predictors in the machine learning model, specifically the Optimizable Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) model with a radial basis function kernel. The model achieved a validation R-squared of 0.90 and a test R-squared of 0.70. These systems could incorporate additional data sources, such as eye-tracking and scan pattern analysis, for a better assessment of pilot SA and fatigue levels. While post-flight measurements are inherently reactive, they are effective for monitoring the degradation of pilot CPT scores after each leg of high-frequency, short-duration flights. Notable limitations include the need to understand individual cognitive differences among pilots, such as age, experience, and cognitive style. The predictive model also requires validation in actual flight conditions to determine its ecological validity. Future research should aim to address these limitations, generalize the findings, and integrate CPT data with other sensor inputs to provide a more comprehensive understanding of pilot performance.

Abstract:High-risk operational tasks such as those in aviation require training environments that are realistic and capable of inducing high levels of workload. Virtual Reality (VR) offers a simulated 3D environment for immersive, safe and valid training of pilots. An added advantage of such training environments is that they can be personalized to enhance learning, e.g., by adapting the simulation to the user's workload in real-time. The question remains how to reliably and robustly measure a pilot's workload during the training. In this study, six novice military pilots (average of 34.33 flight hours) conducted a speed change maneuver in a VR flight simulator. In half of the runs an auditory 2-back task was added as a secondary task. This led to trials of low and high workload which we compared using the pilot's control input in longitudinal (i.e., pitch) and lateral (i.e., roll) directions. We extracted Pilot Inceptor Workload (PIW) from the stick data and conducted a binary logistic regression to determine whether PIW is predictive of task-induced workload. The results show that inputs on the stick along its longitudinal direction were predictive of workload (low vs. high) when performing a speed change maneuver. Given that PIW may be a task-specific measure, future work may consider (neuro)physiological predictors. Nonetheless, the current paper provides evidence that measuring PIW in a VR flight simulator yields real-time and non-invasive means to determine workload.

Abstract:Modern aircraft cockpit system is highly information-intensive. Pilots often need to receive a large amount of information and make correct judgments and decisions in a short time. However, cognitive load can affect their ability to perceive, judge and make decisions accurately. Furthermore, the excessive cognitive load will induce incorrect operations and even lead to flight accidents. Accordingly, the research on cognitive load is crucial to reduce errors and even accidents caused by human factors. By using physiological acquisition systems such as eye movement, ECG, and respiration, multi-source physiological signals of flight cadets performing different flight tasks during the flight simulation experiment are obtained. Based on the characteristic indexes extracted from multi-source physiological data, the CGAN-DBN model is established by combining the conditional generative adversarial networks (CGAN) model with the deep belief network (DBN) model to identify the flight cadets' cognitive load. The research results show that the flight cadets' cognitive load identification based on the CGAN-DBN model established has high accuracy. And it can effectively identify the cognitive load of flight cadets. The research paper has important practical significance to reduce the flight accidents caused by the high cognitive load of pilots. In our study, a highly accurate cognitive load identification model for flight cadets was established by using multi-source physiological data. Moreover, it provides a theoretical basis for identifying the cognitive load of pilots through wearable physiological devices. Our intent is to catalyse further research and technological development.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Human factors involved with visual attention mechanism and fatigue are critical causes of modern aviation accidents.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the connection between attention and flight fatigue, a mathematical model of pilot's visual attention allocation was established based on information processing channels. Multi-task condition and current psychophysical state were taken into account as well.METHODS: Sixteen participants were recruited to perform a long-term dual-task in a Boeing 737-800 flight simulator. The primary task was an envelope flight task and the secondary was an unusual attitude (UA) recovery task. Reaction time of the secondary task was recorded as a behavior performance index, while heart rate and respiration rate were measured as physiological indices as well as fixation distribution as attention allocation index.RESULTS: The experiment results showed a significant affect of experiment time that indicated the occurrence and influence of fatigue. Eye movement tracking also revealed good agreement with the predictable model and hence verified its effectiveness. Moreover, applicability of the model was validated under flight fatigue and multiple tasks condition.CONCLUSION: The current study provided a quantitative connection between pilot's visual attention allocation and flight fatigue, which was verified in the ergonomics experiment.

Abstract:Understanding the operator's cognitive workload is crucial for efficiency and safety in human-machine systems. This study investigated how cognitive workload modulates cardiac autonomic regulation during a standardized military simulator flight. Military student pilots completed simulated flight tasks in a Hawk flight simulator. Continuous electrocardiography was recorded to analyze time and frequency domain heart rate variability (HRV). After the simulation, a flight instructor used a standardized method to evaluate student pilot's individual cognitive workload from video-recorded flight simulator data. Results indicated that HRV was able to differentiate flight phases that induced varying levels of cognitive workload; an increasing level of cognitive workload caused significant decreases in many HRV variables, mainly reflecting parasympathetic deactivation of cardiac autonomic regulation. In conclusion, autonomic physiological responses can be used to examine reactions to increased cognitive workload during simulated military flights. HRV could be beneficial in assessing individual responses to cognitive workload and pilot performance during simulator training.

Abstract:Ramp controllers are required to manage their workloads effectively while handling complex operational tasks, a crucial part of improving aviation safety. The ability to detect their instantaneous workload is vital for ensuring operational effectiveness and preventing hazardous incidents. This paper introduces a novel methodology aimed at enhancing the evaluation of the ramp controller's cumulative workload by incorporating and optimizing the feature combination from eye movement, respiratory, and fatigue characteristics. Specifically, a 90-minute simulated experiment related to ramp control tasks, using real data from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, is conducted to collect multi-type data from 8 controllers. Following data construction and the extraction of multi-type, the workloads of all samples are categorized through unsupervised learning. Subsequently, supervised learning techniques are used to calculate feature weights and train classifiers after data alignment. The optimal feature combination is established by calculating feature weights, and the best classification accuracy is over 98%, achieved by the KNN classifier. Furthermore, numerical evaluation and threshold calculations for different workload levels are interpreted. It is promising to provide insights into future works towards human-centered data construction, processing, and interpretation to promote the progress of workload assessment within the aviation industry.

However, this part could still be huge and difficult to comprehend and thus diminish usefulness of program slicing. This is a serious problem in working with legacy codes for scientific computing. To address this problem, the Program Slice Browser (PSB) is designed as an interactive and integrated tool that is particularly valuable for extracting useful information from a complex program slice. PSB incorporates the following novel features: adaptable layout for convenient display of a slice, multi-level slice abstractions, integration with other software visualization components, and capabilities to support interaction and cross-referencing within different views of the software.

Abstract:Vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft do not require a prolonged runway, thus allowing them to land almost anywhere. In recent years, their flexibility has made them popular in development, research, and operation. When compared to traditional fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft, VTOLs bring unique challenges as they combine many maneuvers from both types of aircraft. Pilot workload is a critical factor for safe and efficient operation of VTOLs. In this work, we conduct a user study to collect multimodal data from 28 pilots while they perform a variety of VTOL flight tasks. We analyze and interpolate behavioral patterns related to their performance and perceived workload. Finally, we build machine learning models to estimate their workload from the collected data. Our results are promising, suggesting that quantitative and accurate VTOL pilot workload monitoring is viable. Such assistive tools would help the research field understand VTOL operations and serve as a stepping stone for the industry to ensure VTOL safe operations and further remote operations.

Abstract:In aviation, mental workload and stress are two major factors that can considerably impact a pilot's flight performance and decisions. Their consequences can be even more dramatic in single-pilot aircraft or with the forthcoming single-pilot operations where the pilot will fly alone and will not be able to be assisted in case of difficulty. An accurate and automatic monitoring of the pilot's mental state could help to prevent the potentially dangerous effects of an excess mental workload and stress. For example, some tasks could be allocated to automation or to a ground-based flight crew if a mental overload or significant stress is detected. In the current study, the brain activity of 20 private pilots was recorded with a fNIRS device during two realistic flight simulator scenarios. The mental workload was manipulated with the added difficulty of a secondary task and stress was induced by a social stressor. Our results confirmed the sensitivity of the fNIRS readings to variations in the mental workload, with increased HbO2 concentration in regions of the executive control network (ECN), in particular in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and in lateral parietal regions, when the difficulty of the secondary task was high. The social stressor also triggered an HbO2 increase in the ECN, especially when it was combined with high mental workload. This latter result suggests that mental workload and stress together can have cumulative effects, and coping with both factors is possible at the expense of an extra recruitment of the ECN. Finally, results also revealed a time-on-task effect, with a progressive reduction of the HbO2 signal in the ECN during the flight scenario, suggesting that these regions are sensitive to short term habituation to the tasks. Overall, fNIRS efficiently indexed mental load, stress, and practice effects.

Abstract:Pilot stress detection is a challenging task and it plays a vital role in improving flight performance and avoiding catastrophic accidents. Many deep learning models have been adopted for stress recognition. However, these models tend to ignore the dependencies between multimodal physiological signals, which can boost the model performance potentially. A transformer-based deep learning framework, which can obtain the position information of multimodal signals by combining a transformer network with a traditional convolutional neural network (CNN), is proposed for detecting pilot stress. The 14 pilots’ physiological data, including electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), electrodermal (EDA), respiration (RESP), and skin temperature (SKT), under different stress states are collected for training and validation, and evaluated among different state-of-the-art models. The results show that the proposed model achieves an accuracy of 93.28%, 88.75%, and 84.85% for two-, three-, and four-class classification tasks, respectively, showing faster integration and promising performance.

Abstract:The objective of pilot training is to equip trainees with the knowledge, judgment, and skills to maintain control of an aircraft and respond to critical flight tasks. The present research aims to investigate changes in trainees' cognitive control levels during a pilot training process while they underwent basic flight maneuvers. EEG microstate analysis was applied together with spectral power features to quantitatively monitor trainees' cognitive control under varied flight tasks during different training sessions on a flight simulator. Not only could EEG data provide an objective measure of cognitive control to complement the current subjective assessments, but the application of EEG microstate analysis is particularly well-suited for capturing rapid dynamic changes in cognitive states that may happen under complex human activities in conducting flight maneuvers. Comparisons were conducted between two types of tasks and across different training stages to monitor how pilot trainees' cognitive control responds to varied flight task types and training stages. The present research provides insights into the changes in trainees' cognitive control during a pilot training process and highlights the potential of EEG microstate analysis for monitoring cognitive control.

Abstract:Background: The aircraft cockpit is a highly intensive human-computer interaction system, and its design directly affects flight safety. Objective: To optimize the display interface design in complex flight tasks, the present study aimed to propose a dynamic conceptual framework and a timeline task analysis method for the quantization of the dynamic time effect of mental workload and the influencing factors of task types in the mental workload prediction model. Methods: The multi-factor mental workload prediction model based on attention resource allocation was integrated to establish the dynamic prediction model of mental workload. The ergonomics simulation experiment was carried out by recording the data on the performance of embedded subtasks, National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) subjective evaluation, and eye tracking. Results: The results indicated that the prediction model had a good prediction accuracy and effectiveness under different simulated interfaces and complex tasks, and the real-time monitoring of pilots' mental workload state was realized. Conclusion: In conclusion, the prediction model and the experimental method could be applied to avoid the overload of the pilot throughout the flight phase by optimizing the display interface and adjusting the flight task.
How a pilot’s brain copes with stress and mental load? Insights from the executive control network

Abstract:In aviation, mental workload and stress are two major factors that can considerably impact a pilot’s flight performance and decisions. Their consequences can be even more dramatic in single-pilot aircraft or with the forthcoming single-pilot operations where the pilot will fly alone and will not be able to be assisted in case of difficulty. An accurate and automatic monitoring of the pilot’s mental state could help to prevent the potentially dangerous effects of an excess mental workload and stress. For example, some tasks could be allocated to automation or to a ground-based flight crew if a mental overload or significant stress is detected. In the current study, the brain activity of 20 private pilots was recorded with a fNIRS device during two realistic flight simulator scenarios. The mental workload was manipulated with the added difficulty of a secondary task and stress was induced by a social stressor. Our results confirmed the sensitivity of the fNIRS readings to variations in the mental workload, with increased HbO2 concentration in regions of the executive control network (ECN), in particular in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and in lateral parietal regions, when the difficulty of the secondary task was high. The social stressor also triggered an HbO2 increase in the ECN, especially when it was combined with high mental workload. This latter result suggests that mental workload and stress together can have cumulative effects, and coping with both factors is possible at the expense of an extra recruitment of the ECN. Finally, results also revealed a time-on-task effect, with a progressive reduction of the HbO2 signal in the ECN during the flight scenario, suggesting that these regions are sensitive to short term habituation to the tasks. Overall, fNIRS efficiently indexed mental load, stress, and practice effects.
