Preparation and Piezoelectric Catalytic Performance of HT-Bi2MoO6 Microspheres for Dye Degradation

Abstract:HT-Bi2MoO6 microspheres were prepared by hydrothermal method and applied in piezoelectric catalytic degradation of dye. The crystallinity, morphology, optical property, and the surface chemical state of Bi2MoO6 catalyst were characterized by XRD, SEM, UV-vis and XPS techniques, respectively. The effects of catalyst preparation method, catalyst amount, dyes type and reaction conditions were investigated on the piezoelectric catalytic performance. The highest degradation ratio of 98.9% was achieved with 10 mg of HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst after 45 min of piezoelectric catalytic vibration. In addition, a possible piezoelectric catalytic mechanism over HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst has been proposed by active species trapping experiment. center dot O-2 and h(+) are suggested to be the main active species in the piezoelectric catalytic process. These research results show that the HT-Bi2MoO6 catalyst with flower-like microspheres morphology consisting of nanosheets can effectively transform mechanical energy into electrical energy by vibration to generate reactive species for the degradation of dyes. Highly efficient piezocatalytic degradation of organic dye over few-layer MoS 2 /carbon sponge composite boosted by mild mechanical stimuli

Abstract:Piezocatalysis is a burgeoning sustainable technology due to its attractive potential in solving environmental and resource issues with various mechanical energies. Herein, a high-performance freestanding composite piezocatalyst was synthesized by combining few-layer MoS 2 nanosheets with highly porous flexible carbonaceous matirx derived from melamine sponge (CMS), which can greatly harvest mild mechanical energies to trigger off piezoelectric effect for efficient dye degradation. Under mechanical stirring, the developed MoS 2 /CMS showed distinguished piezocatalytic degradation efficiency (99.8% within 10 min) for Rhodamine B (Rh B) dye solution. Besides, as a brick-shaped piezo-active platform, the MoS 2 /CMS is easy to be recycled and can remain excellent stability with over 90% degradation rate after 7 cycles of repeated catalytic reactions. To investigate its practical application potential, the MoS 2 /CMS was mounted in the pipeline of a homemade circulatory system, which was completely decolored 2.0 L Rh B aqueous solution after 2 h under a circulating flow of 30 mL min −1 . Overall, this work presents an efficient and extensible strategy for construction of high-performance piezocatalytic materials with not only a desired integrated structure to produce sensitive deformations under mild mechanical stimuli, but also a freestanding form with excellent recyclability to alleviate secondary pollution. This research would provide viable guidance for promoting piezoelectric materials towards practical applications for wastewater decontamination.

Abstract:Incorporating piezo-response into photocatalysis holds great promise for eco-friendly strategies in environmental remediation and sustainable energy conversion. Herein, flexible N -defect nanoporous g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (NPCNs) was prepared via one-step method, then whose surface was protonated. And existed dense 1T/2H phase and vertical interfaces in non-layer-dependent-piezo-response sailboat-like-MoS 2 (Sv-MS) formed by in-situ stresses during nucleation and growth by experiments and MD-simulations. Noble-metal-free Z-scheme PC/VM heterojunction with broad-spectrum absorption, enhanced piezo-response and intimate triple-interface was established by electrostatic self-assembly, performing efficient hybrid-driven piezo-photocatalysis. With a systematic modification of morphology, grain size, phase composition, and surface condition of the components, the optimal PC(3.6H)/VM(u2) exhibited high piezo-photocatalytic rates for degradation of organic dyes and antibiotic (RhB (0.565 min - 1 ), MO (0.052 min - 1 ), MB (1.557 min - 1 ), TC (0.062 min - 1 )) and hydrogen evolution (3528 μmolg -1 h - 1 ) under visible-light and ultrasonic-wave, with maintenance under NIR-light (λ max = 1000 nm) attributed to up-conversion effect (RhB: 0.212 min - 1 , H 2 : 2355 μmolg -1 h - 1 ). Furthermore, the piezo-photocatalytic mechanism was proposed by experiments and DFT-calculations for effective triple-interface Z-Scheme charge migration. This work provides a rational protocol for constructing diverse-energy-triggered, multiple-interfaces and broad-solar-spectrum (UV–Vis-NIR) piezo-photocatalysts in degradation and hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The piezocatalytic effect is a promising approach for the efficient degradation of organic pollutants. However, directly dispersing such catalysts in aqueous media introduces other issues including media purification (since it constitutes a secondary pollutant), and catalyst recyclability. In this work, a highly recyclable hierarchical composite material, MoS 2 decorated onto carbon felt with further coated by Nafion (Nf-MSCF), was demonstrated to be an efficient piezocatalyst for organic pollutants degradation. The hierarchical Nf-MSCF catalyst structure designed in this way exhibited strong piezocatalytic performance as well as stability and durability. It achieved a high efficiency of removing 98% of Rhodamine B (RhB) pollutants in water after 4 minutes under ultrasound and this efficiency was maintained even after 300 minutes of ultrasound. Such excellent properties were attributed to the combined effects of high piezocatalytic activity of MoS 2 nanosheets, high specific surface area of carbon felt, and improved cation adsorption as well as stability resulting from surface modification by the Nafion layer. The reactive oxygen species generated was verified and analyzed by electron spin resonance measurements and radical trapping experiments. The Zeta potentials were measured to confirm the more negatively charged surface brought about by Nafion modification. Finally, combining COMSOL Multiphysics simulation and piezoelectric voltage measurement with energy band theory, the possible piezocatalytic mechanism of the structure was proposed. This work provides a facile strategy to prepare recyclable and high efficiency piezocatalysts, and further promotes the practical applications of piezocatalysis.

Crystalline‐Amorphous Hybrid of MoS2 for Enhanced Piezo‐catalytic Activation of Peroxomonosulfate Toward Organic Pollutants Degradation

Abstract:This work synthesizes MoS2 catalysts with different crystallinities and assessed their performance in the piezo‐activated peroxomonosulfate system. The MoS2 annealed at 700 °C (M‐700) with a crystallinity of 60.4% achieves 99.6% bisphenol A degradation in 30 min. It reveals a positive correlation among crystallinity, piezoelectric properties (d33), and catalytic activity, with crystalline‐amorphous hybrid structure optimizing charge transfer for enhanced peroxomonosulfate activation. Despite the promising potential of piezo‐catalysis in environmental remediation applications, the performance of various piezoelectric materials still suffer from low carrier concentrations, limited carrier mobility, and rapid recombination of electron‐hole pairs, and the reported modification strategies are quite intricate and challenging to implement. Herein, MoS2 with varying degrees of crystallinity is synthesized through drying and thermal treatment processes, and the effect of crystal engineering on the performance of the piezo‐activated peroxomonosulfate (PAP) system is investigated. The MoS2 annealed at 700 °C (M‐700) with a crystallization of 60.4% exhibited superior performance in the PAP system, which can degrade 99.6% of bisphenol A within 30 min with a mineralization rate of 57.0%. The positive correlation among the crystallinity of piezoelectric catalysts, the parameters of piezoelectric performance (d33) and piezo‐catalytic performance within a certain range is proposed. From the density functional perturbation theory (DFPT), the crystalline‐amorphous hybrid of M‐700 provided an appropriate charge transfer rate, electron concentration, and mechanical strength, which is more conducive to stimulate the active species chain reaction of PMS. This study provides a novel method for improving the piezo‐catalytic activities and holds great promise for water pollution treatment.

Enhanced Non-Layer-dependent Piezo-Response in Sailboat-Like Vertical Molybdenum Disulfide Nanosheets for Piezo-Catalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Dye Degradation: Effect of Microstructure and Phase Composition

Abstract:The piezo-response of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide(MoS2) only exists at the edge of oddnumber layers. It's crucial to design reasonable micro/nano-structures and construct tight interfaces to weaken layer-dependence, enhance energy harvesting, charge transfer and active sites exposure to improve piezoelectricity. The novel sailboat-like-vertical-MoS2-nanosheets(SVMS), in which abundant vertical MoS2 nanosheets(-20 nm, 1-5 layers) are uniformly distributed on horizontal substrate of MoS2, with abundant vertical interfaces and controllable phase composition are prepared by facile method. The larger geometric-asymmetry enhances mechanical energy capture. Experiment and theory revealed the enhanced in-/out-of-plane polarization, higher piezo-response in multi-directions and abundant active edge sites of SVMS, thereby eliminating the layer-dependence and generating higher piezopotential. Cooperating with the Mo-S bonds at vertical interfaces, free electrons-holes are efficiently separated and migrated. The piezo-degradation of Rhodamine B(RhB) and hydrogen evolution rate under ultrasonic/stirring are 0.16 min-1 and 1598 lmolg ?1h-1 for SVMS(2H) with the highest piezo-response (under ultrasonic wave, stirring and water flow), which are over 1.6 and 3.1 times than few-layer MoS2 nanosheets. 94% RhB(500 mL) is degraded under water-flow(60 min). The mechanism was proposed. Overall, the design of SVMS with enhanced piezoelectricity was studied and modulated by regulating microstructure and phase composition, which has excellent application potential in fields of environment, energy and novel materials. & COPY; 2023 Elsevier Inc. Oxygen-incorporated MoS2 catalyst for remarkable enhancing piezocatalytic H2 evolution and degradation of organic pollutant

Abstract:A highly efficient piezocatalyst of oxygen-incorporated MoS 2 (O-MoS 2 ) was designed and successfully synthesized via facile modulation of hydrothermal process temperature method. Remarkably, a superior piezocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 46.1 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 in pure water and 921.0 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 in methanol solution is obtained on optimal O-MoS 2 -180 (with a hydrothermal process temperature of 180 °C), outperforming pristine MoS 2 and most of the reported other catalysts. Moreover, piezocatalytic activity of O-MoS 2 toward the degradation of organic pollutants depends on hydrothermal temperatures. The suitable temperature of O-MoS 2 -180 presents dramatically excellent piezocatalytic capacity compared with the pristine MoS 2 for degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The reaction rate constant of O-MoS 2 -180 reaches to 54.6 × 10 −3 min −1 , which is nearly 18 and 4-folds in contrast with pristine MoS 2 and O-MoS 2 -140 (with a hydrothermal process temperature of 140 °C), respectively. Simultaneously, it also manifests that O-MoS 2 -180 endows relatively high degradation efficiency (84.6% within 30 min) and excellent stability. Moreover, it is also demonstrated that optimal O-MoS 2 can dramatically promote charge carriers transport and separation. Furthermore, our theoretical calculation results suggest that the oxygen-incorporated can modulate the surface electronic state, enhance active sites as well as optimize the hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy of MoS 2 , thus extremely boosting piezocatalytic efficiency. Ultimately, an innovative piezocatalytic mechanism is proposed to reveal and expound the relationship between piezocatalytic property and oxygen-incorporated role.

Abstract:Developing and designing an excellent environmental cleanup piezocatalyst remains a considerable challenge for realizing a highly effective conversion of mechanical vibration energy into the chemical activity. Herein, the 2D/2D heterojunctions of ferro-/piezoelectric KNbO 3 /MoS 2 nanosheets were rationally designed and constructed to satisfy this goal. Under ultrasonic vibration, the 2D/2D KNbO 3 /MoS 2 heterojunction could simultaneously remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and Rhodamine B (RhB). After 30 min of piezocatalysis, the reaction rate constants ( k ) were 0.085 min −1 and 0.092 min −1 for TC and RhB, which were near 17.0 and 6.1 times higher than that of pristine KNbO 3 , respectively. Additionally, the antibacterial properties of the 2D/2D heterojunction reached more than 99.77% against Escherichia coli and 60.03% against Staphylococcus aureus within 10 min ultrasound treatment, respectively. The strong piezocatalytic activity was attributed to: (1) the polarization-modulated interfacial electric-fields were realized through the desirable ferro-/piezoelectric 2D/2D nanostructures, (2) intimate and large interfaces were constructed between KNbO 3 and MoS 2 nanosheets, which created unique opportunities for facilitating free charges transfer, (3) KNbO 3 /MoS 2 heterojunctions represented two reactive oxygen species of •O 2 - and •OH were greatly enhanced in contrast to bare KNbO 3 and MoS 2 , supporting the observation of efficiently piezocatalytic activity. Overall, this research illustrates the effect of a wonderful and stable catalyst for environmental remediation and brings new inspirations for engineers to develop high-efficiency piezocatalysis for multifunctional environmental applications.

Abstract:Piezocatalysis technology is emerging as a promising strategy for removing organic pollutants from water by harvesting mechanical energy from the surrounding environment. Herein, 2H-MoS 2 flower-like nanosheets with tunable S vacancies was synthesized via a hydrothermal method by adjusting pH of the precursor solution, Mo and S molar ratio, reaction time and temperature. The results showed that the presence of S vacancy leads to significantly enhanced piezoelectric response in the MoS 2 nanosheets, as confirmed by both theoretical calculation using first-principle based density functional theory and probe force microscopy (PFM) measurements. As a result, the as-obtained MoS 2 nanoflower piezocatalyst exhibited excellent degradation efficiency for Orange II solution (removal rate >95% in 1 h) under ultrasonic vibration (40 kHz and 110 W). Importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that the piezocatalytic performance was tightly related with the water level in ultrasonic cleaner. The present work not only reports a simple and effective strategy for improving the piezocatalytic degradation activity of MoS 2 by introducing vacancy, but also provides new insights and deeper understanding on the underlying mechanism.

Abstract:In the recent years, piezocatalysis process is attracting extensive attention as an emerging technology to remove persistent organic pollutants. Its advantage is that it relies on mechanical energy and is independent of electricity and light source, unlike electrocatalysis or photocatalysis processes. In this research, 2H-MoS 2 /g-C 3 N 4 heterojunction materials were successfully fabricated via the hydrothermal method and utilized as piezocatalyst in the treatment of Rhodamine B. This material exhibited a highly efficient piezo-catalyst effect, with the piezo-response amplitudes of 78.8 mV, almost doubled compared to 39.8¬†mV of 2H-MoS 2 . The degradation of Rhodamine B by ultrasonic irradiation could reach 75.4% only after 5 s and then 94.9% in 60 s without light assistance. This ultra-rapid degradation rate is attributed to the electron‚Äďhole pairs and transfer of the charge-carriers on the surface of 2H-MoS 2 and g-C 3 N 4 via S-scheme heterojunction model, which was confirmed by density functional theory study. The piezo-catalytic ability of the material can still be improved for better treatment of other organic pollutants in aqueous environment.

Abstract:Efficient spatial charge separation plays a crucial role in improving the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, 1T/2H MoSe2/BiOCl (1T/2H MS/BOC) and 2H MoSe2/BiOCl (2H MS/BOC) piezo-photocatalysts are synthesized. Combining piezoelectric catalysis and photocatalysis, a highly active piezo-photocatalytic process is realized. The optimizing 1T/2H MS/BOC piezo-photocatalyst displays superior diclofenac (DCF) degradation and hydrogen (H2) evolution activity under the combined action of ultrasonic and light. Specially, the DCF degradation kinetic constant (k) of optimal 0.5% 1T/2H MS/BOC under synergistic effect of ultrasonic and light is 0.057 min−1, which is 8.1 and 6.3 times higher than that of BiOCl (0.007 min−1) and 0.5% 2H MS/BOC (0.009 min−1). Moreover, the H2 evolution rate of 0.5% 1T/2H MS/BOC is 122.5 μmol·g-1·h-1, which is also faster than that of BiOCl (45.8 μmol·g-1·h-1) and 2H MS/BOC (49.5 μmol·g-1·h-1). The dramatic improvement in DCF degradation and H2 evolution piezo-photocatalytic performance over 1T/2H MS/BOC catalysts is ascribed to built-in polarization electric field and abundance of active sites of 1T/2H MS/BOC as well as advantageous band structure between BiOCl and 1T/2H MoSe2. Additionally, three probable degradation pathways of DCF were put forward by the results of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LCMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study provides a design strategy of high efficiency piezo-photocatalysts in environmental purification and energy-generation fields based on phase and band structure engineering.

Piezo-enhanced Photocatalysis of MoS 2 /bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PVDF-HFP Film for Wastewater Purification

Abstract:To date, the piezoelectric field has been demonstrated as a promising approach to inhibit the recombination of photogenerated carrier in photocatalyst applications. Herein we propose a MoS 2 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 /PVDF-HFP piezophotocatalytic film in the organic pollutants remediation. MoS 2 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 as the photocatalytic material is incorporated to poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene)(PVDF-HFP) as the supporting layer via a simple phase transition method. The polarised electric field generated on PVDF-HFP and MoS 2 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 under aeration synergised with the built-in electric field formed between MoS 2 /Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 Z -scheme heterojunction to promote the interfacial charge transfer. The degradation rates of rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) under aeration and visible light irradiation in 60 min reached 98.9% and 92.2%, respectively. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations (DFT) further demonstrated the effective charge separation and transfer induced by the Z -scheme charge transfer mechanism constructed by MoS 2 composite with Bi 4 O 5 Br 2 , as well as the synergistic effect of the double electric field in favour of suppressing carrier recombination. This work provides an interesting solution for effectively combining piezoelectric catalysis with photocatalysis.
Preparation and application of wood-supported piezocatalyst with high efficiency and stability via partial hydrolysis of wood cellulose and hemicellulose with Lewis acid

Abstract:The conveniently recoverable piezocatalyst with self-floating and stable performance has drawn wide attention. Herein, MoS2 was anchored on 1-cm-square eucalyptus wood blocks via a facile hydrothermal/solvothermal process to fabricate two floating piezocatalysts, i.e., MoS2/unpretreated wood (MUW) and MoS2/pretreated wood (MPW). FeCl3 solution was used as a Lewis acid to pretreat the wood through partial hydrolyzing cellulose and hemicellulose for an purpose to creat rich micropores for MoS2 loading in the wood and to form MoFe heterojunction. The piezocatalytic properties and performance of the prepared wood were systematically studied. The scanning electron microscopy confirms MoS2 was anchored on wood surface. The macroscopic photos show that MoS2 penetrated through the MPW interior whereas it was only loaded on the wood surface layer. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the shift of Mo 3d and S 2p, verifying the heterojunction formation of MPW. The Fourier transform infrared spectra prove the partial hydrolysis of wood matrix. In comparison to MUW, MPW had excellent piezocatalytic property, wide pH adaptability, convenient recyclability and high stability. Sildenafil and Cr6+ ions could be completely removed in 20 and 15 min, respectively, by MPW. Contrastly, the removal efficiency of sildenafil and Cr6+ by MUW was 78.6 % and 68.3 % in 20 and 15 min, respectively. After five cycles of use, the removal ratio of sildenafil was 62.4 % by MUW and 90.5 % by MPW in 20 min. The mineralization efficiency of sildenafil reached 99.2 % in 30 min by MPW, and various types of N/S-containing intermediates were effectively degraded. The electron spin resonance characterization and active species scavenging experiments displayed that e- and •O2- were major active species responsible for Cr6+ piezoreduction by MUW and MPW, while •O2- and •OH were the dominant species accounting for sildenafil degradation by MUW and MPW, respectively. And •OH was not generated in the MUW piezocatalysis process. MPW had higher piezoelectric current and lower resistance at the electron transfer interface than MUW. Conclusively, this study paves a new pathway for preparing new floating piezocatalysts with easy recyclability and high stability from biomass for wastewater treatment.
Carbon quantum dots modified MoS 2 for high-efficiency and long-endurance persulfate activation: Enhanced electron transfer and piezoelectricity

Abstract:Persulfate (PS) or peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated sulfate radicals can significantly enhance advanced oxidation processes owing to their high oxidation potentials. However, highly efficient and continuous activation of PS or PMS has been limited owing to the sluggish redox cycle. Herein, a photo-piezoelectric synergistic catalyst, Carbon quantum dots modified MoS 2 nanosheets (MoS 2 /C-dots), has been developed to boost the electron transfer for PMS activation, and achieved significant antibiotics degradation (85.06 % degradation under weak visible-light and simulated water flow within 10 min, which is 3.83 times higher than that with PMS). The advance of MoS 2 /C-dots fabrication is four-fold: a. the attached C-dots on MoS 2 improved the asymmetry of MoS 2 and enhanced its piezoelectricity, which accelerated the photogenerated e − and hole separation, and hence, improved its piezo-photocatalytic activity; b. C-dots surface charge promotes the electron transfer to MoS 2 , and provides e − for PMS activation; c. C-dots may act as e − banks for continuous PMS activation, hence, improving the PMS activation endurance; d. the photo-piezocatalysts can synergistically utilize the abundant weak visible light and the natural mechanical energy such as tide and water flow for highly efficient pollution degradation in wastewater and also exhibit good cycling stability. In addition, free radical trapping experiments were employed to reveal the PMS activation mechanism, and the results showed that h + , 1 O 2 , SO 4 ·− , and ·OH were the main active species and a possible reaction pathway has been proposed. This work provides a rational piezo-photocatalyst design strategy for high-efficiency PS or PMS activation.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials have promising potential for converting mechanical energy into chemical energy (i.e. piezocatalysis) by coupling the piezotronic effect with electrochemical processes. Herein, piezocatalytic water splitting and degradation of organic pollutants have been realized in three few-layer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) (namely MoS2, WS2, and WSe2). We showed that the H-2 evolution rate reached 29.1, 15.4, and 11.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) for MoS2, WS2, and WSe2 nanosheets respectively, under mechanical force provided by ultrasonic vibration. Moreover, their piezocatalytic activities can be further promoted by loading with heavy metal (e.g. Pt and Au) nanoparticles. In addition, all the samples exhibited good piezocatalytic degradation efficiency and reusability toward different organic pollutants (e.g. tetracycline and Rhodamine B). We also provided a systematic investigation on the piezoelectricity by piezoresponse force microscopy and piezoelectric stress coefficients (e(11)) by first-principle calculations of these three studied compounds, which are accordant with the piezocatalytic results. The present work clearly demonstrates a high correlation between piezoelectricity and mechanical vibration induced catalytic reactions in few-layer TMDs and may provide insight into the mechanisms of piezocatalytic effect.
Regulating interlayer charge transfer in MoS 2 via in-situ loading of Pd-metallene to enhance piezo-catalytic degradation efficiency: Contributions of low free energy

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is a promising piezoelectric catalytic material that has garnered considerable research attention. However, its application in the water treatment field is hindered by electron/hole recombination, leading to relatively low piezoelectric efficiency. This study proposes a strategy of establishing interlayer electron bridges by anchoring Palladium metallene (Pd-ene) with ultra-high conductivity and high longitudinal strain response into MoS 2 , aiming to accelerate carrier migration. The Pd-ene/MoS 2 -3 catalyst exhibited outstanding piezoelectric catalytic activity, achieving a tetracycline degradation efficiency of 96.51 % and a Cr 6+ reduction efficiency of 90.45 % within 30 min. PFM and d 33 measurements indicated that the piezoelectric response signal and piezoelectric coefficient were 2.17 times and 6.4 times higher, respectively, compared to pure MoS 2 . Electrochemical tests revealed that the improved piezoelectric performance is primarily due to enhanced transient piezoelectric current response, reaching 5.9 mA/cm 2 . The presence of Pd-ene significantly boosts the catalyst's performance in terms of current density, electrochemically active surface area, and impedance when compared to MoS 2 alone. Notably, the theory calculations and quantitative experiments on radicals showed a reduction in the band gap width from 2.62 eV to 1.31 eV, creating favorable conditions for lowering the system's free energy and facilitating the formation of H 2 O 2 . Among them, the free energy of H 2 O adsorption, dissociation to 2OH*, deprotolation to 2O* and desorption to O 2 path decreased by 5.21, 4.96, 2.64 and 4.15 eV, respectively. This study presents an innovative strategy for enhancing the piezocatalytic activity of MoS 2 and explores the application of metallene in the field of piezoelectronics.

Abstract:This paper synthesized a new type of ternary piezoelectric catalyst MoOx/ZnS/ZnO (MZZ) by a one-step method. The catalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) solution (10 µg/g, pH = 7.0) shows that the composite catalyst has excellent piezoelectric catalytic activity under ultrasonic vibration (40 kHz). The piezoelectric degradation rate of the optimal sample reached 0.054 min-1, which was about 2.5 times that of pure ZnO. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technologies were used to analyze the structure, morphology, and interface charge transfer properties of the MZZ piezocatalysts. The results showed that the composite catalyst may have a core-shell structure. ZnS is coated on the surface of ZnO, while MoOx adheres to the surface of ZnS. This structure endowed MZZ larger specific surface area than ZnO, which benefits the RhB adsorption. More importantly, the formed heterojunction structure between ZnS and ZnO promotes the separation of positive and negative charges induced by the piezoelectric effect. MoOx species may act as a charge trap to further promote more carriers to participate in the reaction. In addition, MoOx may also be beneficial in adsorbing dyes. Active species capture experiments show that superoxide radicals and holes are the main active species in piezoelectric catalytic reactions on MZZ catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic activity has been investigated in 2D materials, and the unique structural and electronic properties contribute to their success in conventional heterogeneous catalysis. Heterojunction‐based piezocatalysis has attracted increasing attention due to the band‐structure engineering and the enhanced charge carrier separation by prominent piezoelectric effect. However, the piezocatalytic behavior of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is still unknown, and the finite active sites, catalyst poisoning, and poor conductivity are challenges for developing good piezocatalysts. Herein, a reduced graphene oxide (rGO)‐MoS2 heterostructure is rationally designed to tackle these challenges. The heterostructure shows a record‐high piezocatalytic degradation rate of 1.40 х 102 L mol−1 s−1, which is 7.86 times higher than MoS2 nanosheets. Piezoresponse force microscope (PFM) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveal that the coupling between semiconductive and piezoelectric properties in the vdW heterojunction is vital to break the metallic state screening effect at the MoS2 edge for keeping the piezoelectric potential. The dynamic charges generated by MoS2 and the fast charge transfer in rGO activate and maintain catalytically active sites for pollutant degradation with ultra‐fast rate and good stability.
