Abstract:lored surgical approaches due to complex cardiovascular pathologies and anatomy, 3D printing models are useful tools for preoperative planning and might be superior to other imaging data. Meanwhile, it is difficult to define appropriate indications for 3D printing models because surgeons and interventionalists are still gaining experience in this aspect. After all, the medical application of 3D printing technology is a newly emerging industry. In our cases, patients selected by the interventionalist to have left atrial appendage closure were included in our study to fabricate a 3D model. In the future, it is likely that some groups will be able to develop standard criteria for the fabrication of 3D printing models [3] . The data acquired from CT and MRI scans have generally been employed to generate 3D anatomic cardiac models for printing [4] . These imaging methods may involve intravenous contrast, sedation, and ionizing radiation [5] . As mentioned by Luo [1] , if we required patients to have CT scans for the sole purpose of 3D printing, it would certainly increase their radiation exposure. This is why so many researchers use echocardiographic data to fabricate 3D printing models. This might be quite promising because echocardiographs are nonradiative. In fact, 3D echocardiographic images have been optimized by new ultraWe read with interest the letter from Luo [1] concerning our previous paper [2] . Here we offer our response, and hope that our experience will be helpful. The first concern raised relates to the indications of three-dimensional (3D) printing. For our team, the preferred candidates are patients whose morphological variations of left atrial appendage are substantial, especially those whose left atrial appendage opening is oblate and wide, with obvious lobulation, and a shallow depth. In 3D printing, 3D transesophageal echocardiography is adopted to obtain the data needed to construct a 3D left atrial appendage model. Different types of occluders are placed in the left atrial appendage 3D model to directly block the opening before operation, which can help the surgeon perform more direct and accurate preoperative surgery, and improve the efficacy and safety of the operation. The fabrication of 3D printing models is neither necessary nor possible in every patient undergoing a cardiovascular procedure. Considering that the fabrication of a model still takes several hours, only elective procedures are eligible. Furthermore, the material for a model is expensive (costing several hundred Renminbi). Therefore, a cost-benefit analysis is necessary for each replica.
