Abstract:Objective To explore the mangnitude and distribution of wall pressure on the suface of intracraninal aneurysms and analysis the role of wall pressure in the process of growth and development of aneurysms.Methods The numerical simulation of hemodynamics in 20 patients with cerebral artery aneurysm including 8 bifurcation aneurysms and 12 sidewall aneurysms were processed with software of finite element method of computational fluid dynamics(CFD) according to DSA images.The mean value of static pressure on areas of the dome,neck and adjacent parent vessel were recorded respectively.The flow fields in the aneurysms were also caculated.Results There were no statistically significant difference among the neck region(618.89±431.09)Pa,the dome region(620.64±446.09)Pa and the parent artery(633.81±448.59)Pa in wall pressure.However,the bifurcation aneurysms and the sidewall aneurysms have satistical difference on the influence of pressure value.Conclusions There was no statistically significant difference between aneurysms and parent arteries.Local pressure may have little affects on the initiating phase of aneurysm.The distinct pressure value between bifuraction and sidewall aneurysms may be caused by the differences in flowfield.
Correlation between wall shear stress and the rupture of saccular intracranial aneurysms:the initial experimental results with patient-specific 3-D computational model

Abstract:Objective To find out the hemodynamic factors relating to the rupture of intracranial aneurysm by comparing the hemodynamic parameters of the asymptomatic intracranial aneurysms with that of symptomatic ones. Methods Eight intracranial aneurysms in five patients were discovered on DSA. By using rotational DSA, 3-D models of the intracranial aneurysms were established, and the numerical simulation of the hemodynamics parameters was performed with finite volume method. The hemodynamics parameters between the aneurysms and the parent arteries were statistically analyzed and compared. Results The average shear stress of the neck and the close parent artery in asymptomatic group was (5.54 ± 2.89) Pa and (6.6 ± 3.47) Pa respectively, while it was (4.78 ± 3.84) Pa and (7.30 ± 3.80) Pa respectively in symptomatic group. No significant difference in the average shear stress of both the aneurysmal neck and its close parent artery existed between two groups (P < 0.05). The low shear stress region of asymptomatic group and symptomatic group was (0.33 ± 0.57)% and (4.72 ± 5.31)% respectively, with a significant difference between the two (P < 0.05). Conclusion The size of low shear stress region of aneurysmal wall may be one of the main factors causing the rupture of the saccular intracranial aneurysms.
Numerical Simulation and Analysis on the Hemodynamics of an Elastic Aneurysm

Abstract:Intracranial aneurysms are pathological dilatations which endanger people's health. Hemodynamics is thought to be an important factor in the pathogenesis and treatment of aneurysms. To date, the bulk of investigations into hemodynamics have been conducted by making use of mathematically idealized models for rigid aneurysms and associated arteries. However the walls of aneurysms and associated arteries are elastic in vivo. This study shows the differences of the simulation between elastic and rigid wall models. The numerical simulation of elastic aneurysm model is made from a representative Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) image and calculated with CFD software to get the wall deformation and the velocity field. Then the results are analyzed. By comparing the simulation results of the two models from their velocity vectors and shear stress distribution, many differences can be noted. The main difference exists in the distribution of velocity magnitude at some sections, with one outlet having obviously off-center distribution for the elastic wall model. The currents of the distribution of wall shear stress along the wall of aneurysm simulated in rigid and elastic wall models were similar. But there were apparent differences between the two models on the values of wall shear stress especially at the neck of aneurysm. The off-center distribution of velocity magnitude affects the distribution of wall shear stress and the exchange of substance through the wall. The analysis demonstrated clearly that the results of 2-D elastic numerical simulation were in good agreement with the clinical and pathological practice. The results of this study play an important role in the formation, growth, rupture and prognosis of an aneurysm on clinic application.
Numerical investigation of hemodynamic pattern in carotid artery dynamic aneurysm on bifurcation region for early clinical decision making

Abstract:In this paper, a numerical estimation of wall shear stress (WSS) and study on hemodynamic pattern in carotid artery (CA) near the bifurcation region with dynamic growth of aneurysm using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for making early clinical decision is presented. Aneurysm in the carotid artery affects the blood supply to brain and if it is untreated at early stage may lead to sudden death. Computed tomography images of four different cases of stroke subjects scanned of 600 slices with 1 mm resolution with neighbouring layers from neck to head are considered for this study. Numerically a CA with bifurcation region is developed from these images and aneurysm is and allowed to grow dynamically from 10 to 20 mm. WSS and hemodynamic pattern is estimated numerically using Ansys platform at various region of interest in both rigid and compliant wall conditions. The arterial wall thinning was analytically estimated using thick cylinder theory to estimate the increase in aneurysm under various stress conditions (rest and exercise conditions). The findings show that WSS is found to reduce at the aneurysm region with a corresponding strong vortex pattern. Thus, the vortex pattern could be the cause of tissue damage and thinning rather than WSS. The corresponding increase in velocity gradient at the bifurcation region is also captured. This high gradient is the cause for higher WSS at the bifurcation region which is a possible cause for the formation of plaque and arteriosclerosis. It is interesting to note that the WSS did not change drastically for 10 and 15 mm aneurysm but a large change was seen from normal to 10 and 15–20 mm respectively. This study provides a better clinical insight on the effect of aneurysm in CA bifurcation region using a systematic approach to numerical modelling compared to traditional imaging modalities. It can be used as an adjunct tool for physicians and surgeons for planning necessary clinical interventions.

Abstract:Background: Inflammation and hemodynamics are interrelated risk factors for intracranial aneurysm rupture. This study aimed to identify the relationship between these risk factors from an individual-patient perspective using biomarkers of aneurysm wall enhancement (AWE) derived from high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-AIRI) and hemodynamic parameters by four-dimensional flow MRI (4D-flow MRI). Methods: A total of 29 patients with 29 unruptured intracranial aneurysms larger than 4 mm were included in this prospective cross-sectional study. A total of 24 aneurysms had AWE and 5 did not have AWE. A three-dimensional (3D) vessel model of each individual aneurysm was generated with 3D time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (3D TOF-MRA). Quantification of AWE was sampled with HR-MRI. Time-averaged wall shear stress (WSS) and oscillatory shear index (OSI) were calculated from the 4D-flow MRI. The correlation between spatial distribution of AWE and hemodynamic parameters measured at pixel-level was evaluated for each aneurysm. Results: In aneurysms with AWE, the spatial distribution of WSS was negatively correlated with AWE in 100% (24/24) of aneurysms, though 2 had an absolute value of the correlation coefficient <0.1. The OSI was positively correlated with AWE in 90.9% (22/24) of aneurysms; the other 2 aneurysms showed a negative correlation with AWE. in aneurysms with no AWE, there was no correlation between WSS (100%, 5/5), OSI (80%, 4/5), and wall inflammation. Conclusions: The spatial distribution of WSS was negatively correlated with AWE in aneurysms with AWE, and OSI was positively correlated with AWE in most aneurysms with AWE. While aneurysms that did not contain AWE showed no correlation between hemodynamics and wall inflammation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Hemodynamic changes accompany the initiation, development and rupture of middle cerebral artery (MCA) aneurysms. The complexity of the intraaneurysmal hemodynamic factors has not been completely clarified by the indirect measures and methods used in previous studies.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate correlations of intraoperative hemodynamic factors to initiation and rupture of MCA aneurysms.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: A case-control study was performed at the Department of Neurosurgery, Tiantan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, China between March and October 2008.PARTICIPANTS: A total of 12 consecutive patients diagnosed with MCA aneurysms (MCA aneurysms group) and five patients without middle cerebral artery aneurysms (with aneurysms located at other arteries, control group) were enrolled at the Department of Neurosurgery, Tiantan Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, China.METHODS: The proximal and distal arteries of MCA aneurysms were exposed visibly in the MCA aneurysm group. The M1 segment of MCA without the aneurysm and the aneurysm on other arteries were also exposed visibly in the control group. Hemodynamic indices were then measured using an intraoperative 16 MHz probe installed in a Multi-Dop TCD8X4 device.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Mean (time-averaged velocity) difference, maximum mean, pulsatility index difference, maximum pulsatility index, resistance index difference, maximum resistance index; correlation of development and rupture of MCA aneurysms to intraoperative hemodynamic factors of the parent artery.RESULTS: A total of 12 patients underwent microsurgery for treatment to occlude 15 MCA aneurysms. Of the 15 MCA aneurysms, 12 were located at the bifurcation, two at the M1 segment, and one at the M3 segment; eight of the aneurysms were unruptured and seven were ruptured. The whole indices with combination mean difference, maximum mean, and maximum pulsatility index of the aneurysms were important factors influencing the rupture of MCA aneurysms (t = 2.92, P = 0.03, constant). A higher velocity intraaneurismal flow at the bifurcation was identified (t = 3.48, P = 0.01, constant). After the aneurysm was completely occluded, global high-velocity flow could not be detected in the parent arteries (t = 2.57, P = 0.03, constant).CONCLUSION: When short-term high-velocity blood flow is present, aneurysms can be easily initiated and ruptured at the bifurcation of MCA.

Abstract:Hemodynamic factors such as the wall shear stress play an important role in the pathogenesis and treatment of cerebral aneurysms. In present study, we apply computational fluid–structure interaction analyses on cerebral aneurysms with two different constitutive relations for aneurismal wall in order to investigate the effect of the aneurismal wall mechanical properties on the simulation results. We carry out these analyses by using two patient-specific models of cerebral aneurysms of different sizes located in different branches of the circle of Willis. The models are constructed from 3D rotational angiography image data and blood flow dynamics is studied under physiologically representative waveform of inflow. From the patient models analyzed in this investigation, we find that the deformations of cerebral aneurysms are very small. But due to the nonlinear character of the Navier–Stokes equations, these small deformations could have significant influences on the flow characteristics. In addition, we find that the aneurismal-wall mechanical properties have great effects on the deformation distribution of the aneurysm, which also affects the wall shear stress distribution and flow patterns. Therefore, how to define a proper constitutive relation for aneurismal wall should be considered carefully in the hemodynamic simulation.

Abstract:Objective: The preoperative identification of thin-walled regions (TIWRs) and thick-walled regions (TKWRs) in cerebral aneurysms can contribute to enhancing surgical safety. Our recent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of cerebral aneurysms has demonstrated that the wall shear stress vector cycle variation (WSSVV) and the oscillatory shear index (OSI) can potentially predict TIWRs and TKWRs. This study aims to validate the accuracy of using WSSVV and the OSI to identify these areas and to report on their effectiveness in actual surgeries. Methods: Our cohort comprised 42 patients who underwent cerebral aneurysm clipping surgery at our hospital from January 2019 to September 2022. CFD analysis was performed using Hemoscope. We defined suspected TIWRs as blue regions and suspected TKWRs as red regions on both color maps. We evaluated the positive predictive value (PPV) by comparing these preoperative suspected areas with actual thin and thick areas determined intraoperatively under surgical microscopic observation. Results: Of the 42 patients, 15 were male and 27 were female. The average age was 63 years, and the average aneurysm size was 5.9 mm. The location of the aneurysms was the middle cerebral artery in 18 cases, the internal carotid artery in 15 cases, the anterior communicating artery in 8 cases, and the basilar artery in 1 case. WSSVV yielded a PPV of 83% for TIWRs and a PPV of 78% for TKWRs. In comparison, the OSI demonstrated a PPV of 77% for TIWRs and 76% for TKWRs. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed a strong correlation between WSSVV and the OSI; the correlation coefficient was 0.883 (p-value < 0.001). Conclusions: CFD analysis of unruptured cerebral aneurysms could be used to predict TIWRs and TKWRs using both WSSVV and the OSI with an accuracy of approximately 80%. The preoperative evaluation of the wall condition using CFD analysis appears to be highly reliable and is likely to contribute to the safety of cerebral aneurysm surgery.

Abstract:Objective To retrospectively investigate the hemodynamic stresses in initiating aneurysm formation on major cerebral arterial bifurcations with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Methods The cerebral 3D angiographic data of major cerebral arterial bifurcations of the internal carotid, middle cerebral, anterior cerebral, and basilar arteries in 80 patients harboring bifurcation aneurysms and 80 control subjects with no aneurysms were retrospectively collected for the CFD analysis of hemodynamic stresses associated with aneurysm formation. Results Bifurcation angles at major bifurcations in all patients were significantly positively ( P < 0.001) correlated with the age. At the center of direct flow impingement (CDFI) on the bifurcation wall, total pressure was the highest but dropped rapidly toward the branches. Wall shear stress, dynamic pressure, strain rate, and vorticity were lowest at the CDFI but they increased quickly toward the branches. The bifurcation angle was significantly ( P < 0.001) enlarged in patients with bifurcation aneurysms than those without them, for all major arterial bifurcations. Most aneurysms leaned toward the smaller arterial branch or the arterial branch that formed a smaller angle with the parent artery, where the hemodynamic stresses increased significantly ( P < 0.05), compared with those on the contralateral arterial branch forming a larger angle with the parent artery. Following the aneurysm development, all the hemodynamic stresses on the aneurysm dome decreased significantly ( P < 0.001) compared with those at the initiation site on the bifurcation wall after virtual aneurysm removal. With the decrease of bifurcation angles, all the hemodynamic stresses decreased. Conclusion The formation of intracranial aneurysms on major intracranial arterial bifurcations is significantly associated with locally abnormally augmented hemodynamic stresses, which must be reduced.

Abstract:The present research extensively investigates the significance of the sac centerline length of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) on aneurysm rupture risk. Hemodynamic factors influencing aneurysm rupture are assessed to identify critical regions prone to rupture. Wall shear stress is analyzed by modeling blood flow in three real saccular ACA cases with varying sac centerline lengths. A one-way fluid-solid interaction (FSI) model is employed to examine the interaction between blood flow and vessel deformation. The computational study reveals that wall shear stress on the ACA saccular aneurysm wall is significantly higher when the sac centerline length is shorter. Conversely, the mean oscillatory index changes with different sac centerline lengths, showing that an increase in sac centerline length leads to higher blood oscillation within the sac area in ACA cases.

Abstract:The mortality and morbidity rate due to the severe effect of intracranial aneurysm (IA) is increasing, which has driven research trend on aneurysm rupture risk. By understanding the nature and causes of the aneurysm rupture, preventive measures could be taken in avoiding rupture besides recommending proper treatments such as endovascular coiling. However, the presence of flow recirculation causes the aneurysm wall to degenerate and weakened. The weakened wall is due to the haemodynamic factors such as velocity, wall shear stress (WSS), time average WSS (TAWSS), OSI and RRT, which were analysed in this study. In the present study, the flow model simulated a human patient-specific aneurysm at the apex of the bifurcation in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in the transient state. Experimental results of full-scale models were collected on a median, side plane to study the flow behaviour and validation to the numerical simulation settings, which resulted in good agreement with only 8% difference. The simulation results obtained showed several interesting findings. The jet flow into the aneurysm led to complex vortex formation due to impinging flow behaviour within the aneurysm dome. Additionally, the area that recorded low velocity was at 30% of low TAWSS with only 1% of OSI that was more than 0.3, while the OSI critical value and 0.27% area exceeded RRT threshold, which caused the large oscillating blood flow direction and activated the atherosclerosis progression. These results suggest that the jet flow into the dome may cause further damage to the wall of the MCA aneurysm, which will help in providing an insight towards completing a guidance system assessment of rupture risk for medical practitioners in future work.
Associations between haemodynamics and wall enhancement of intracranial aneurysm

Abstract:Background and purpose Previous studies have reported about inflammation processes (IPs) that play important roles in aneurysm formation and rupture, which could be driven by blood flow. IPs can be identified using aneurysmal wall enhancement (AWE) on high-resolution black-blood MRI (BB-MRI) and blood flow haemodynamics can be demonstrated by four-dimensional-flow MRI (4D-flow MRI). Thus, this study investigated the associations between AWE and haemodynamics in unruptured intracranial aneurysms (IA) by combining 4D-flow MRI and high-resolution BB-MRI. Materials and methods Between April 2014 and October 2017, 48 patients with 49 unruptured IA who underwent both 4D-flow MRI and high-resolution BB-MRI were retrospectively included in this study. The haemodynamic parameters demonstrated using 4D-flow MRI were compared between different AWE patterns using the Kruskal-Wallis test and ordinal regression. Results The results of Kruskal-Wallis test showed that the average wall shear stress in the IA (WSS avg-IA ), maximum through-plane velocity in the adjacent parent artery, inflow jet patterns and the average vorticity in IA (vorticity avg-IA ) were significantly associated with the AWE patterns. Ordinal regression analysis identified WSS avg-IA (p=0.002) and vorticity avg-IA (p = 0.033) as independent predictors of AWE patterns. Conclusion A low WSS and low average vorticity were independently associated with a high AWE grade for IAs larger than 4 mm. Therefore, WSS and average vorticity could predict AWE and circumferential AWE.

Abstract:Background: Hemodynamics play an important role in intracranial aneurysm (IA) initiation, growth, and rupture. Yet there remains no definitive quantitative analysis between abnormal hemodynamics and geometrical risk of IA development. Objective: The present study aims to investigate whether abnormal hemodynamics in IA sacs can be predicted by surrogate geometric markers. Methods: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were performed on paraclinoid aneurysms derived from digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of 104 IAs in 104 patients. Four basic IA geometric parameters including maximum height, perpendicular height, maximum width, and neck diameter were measured. Abnormal hemodynamics were defined and quantified as the surface area exposed to low wall shear stress (WSS) and high oscillatory shear index (OSI) using objectively-defined thresholds. Relationships between abnormal hemodynamics and specific geometric parameters were analyzed via multiple linear regression. Results: Adjusting for age, sex, and other clinical characteristics, multiple linear regression revealed a significant relationship (p < 0.001) between abnormal hemodynamics and both maximum width (β ≈ 1.2) and neck diameter (β ≈ -0.4), but not maximum height or perpendicular height. These findings were shown to be independent of the choice of abnormal hemodynamic indicators and threshold levels. Conclusions: Maximum width and neck diameter of IA sacs are robust surrogates of exposure to abnormal hemodynamics. Risk of rupture may be increased with wider aneurysms with narrower necks for paraclinoid aneurysms.

Abstract:Background and Purpose: Intracranial aneurysms with daughter blebs appear to have a higher risk of rupture. Whether hemodynamic factors are involved in this phenomenon is not clear. Methods: 54 patient-specific aneurysms harboring 69 daughter blebs were divided into ruptured and unruptured groups based on their clinical history. Realistic models were retrospectively constructed and analyzed by a computational fluid dynamic method. Results: There were no differences in the aspect ratio and morphology type of the aneurysms, the size of blebs or other common risk factors between the two groups. The wall shear stress (WSS) was significantly lower while the oscillatory shear index (OSI) was higher in the daughter blebs than in the primary aneurysms. Bleb-bearing aneurysms with a rupture history displayed significantly lower WSS in the daughter bleb. Of the daughter blebs, 73.9% were localized to the impingement region of the inflow jet. Conclusion: These observations indicate that low WSS and high OSI in the daughter blebs might be involved in increasing the risk of rupture. The localized striking force caused by inflow jets may contribute to the development of daughter blebs. Abstract:BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:Hemodynamics factors play an important role in the rupture of cerebral aneurysms. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of hemodynamic factors on the rupture of the MANs with 3D reconstruction model CFD simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS:RDSA was performed in 9 pairs of intracranial MANs. Each pair was divided into ruptured and unruptured groups. The hemodynamic factors of the aneurysms and their parent arteries were compared. RESULTS:There was a significant difference in the WSS at peak systole between the regions of the aneurysms and their parent arteries in the ruptured group (ie, 6.49 ± 3.48 Pa versus 8.78 ± 3.57 Pa, P =.015) but not in the unruptured group (ie, 9.80 ± 4.12 Pa versus 10.17 ± 7.48 Pa, P =.678). The proportion of the low WSS area to the whole area of the aneurysms was 12.20 ± 18.08% in the ruptured group and 3.96 ± 6.91% in the unruptured group; the difference between the 2 groups was statistically significant (P =.015). The OSI was 0.0879 ± 0.0764 in the ruptured group, which was significantly higher than that of the unruptured group (ie, 0.0183 ± 0.0191, P =.008). CONCLUSIONS:MANs may be a useful disease model to investigate possible causes linked to ruptured aneurysms. The ruptured aneurysms manifested lower WSS compared with their parent arteries, a higher proportion of the low WSS area to the whole area of aneurysm, and higher OSI compared with the unruptured aneurysms.

Abstract:Objective To explore the hemodynamic and morphological differences between ruptured and unruptured intracranial aneurysms,and analyze the risk factor for ruptured aneurysms.Methods Clinical data of 8 patients with mirror posterior communicating artery aneurysms with one side ruptured and the other side unruptured were analyzed retrospectively.3D-DSA was performed in 8 patients and numerical model was established.Sixteen aneurysms were divided into ruptured group and unruptured group,and morphological and hemodynamic parameters were analyzed.Results The mean wall shear stress(WSS) of the aneurysm in ruptured group was significantly lower than that in unruptured group(P < 0.05).The low wall shear stress area ratio and aneurysm ratio(AR) in ruptured group were higher than those in unruptured group(P < 0.05).However,there were no significant differences between the two groups in the parameters such as oscillatory shear index(OSI),aneurysm size,size ratio,vessel angle and aneurysm inclination angle(P < 0.05).Conclusions The mirror posterior communicating artery aneurysms may be an ideal model to investigate the risk factors for aneurysm rupture.Hemodynamics is as important as morphology in judging the risk of aneurysm rupture.

Abstract:It is a general agreement that hemodynamics plays very important role in the initiation, growth, and rupture of cerebral aneurysms and hemodynamics in the anterior communicating artery aneurysms is considered the most complex in all cerebral aneurysms and it is difficult to find some reasonable relationship between the hemodynamics parameters and the rupture risk. In this paper, the 3D geometries of four anterior communicating artery aneurysms were generated from the CTA data and the computational models with bilateral feeding arteries for the four aneurysms were constructed. The blood flow was simulated by computational fluid dynamics software and the hemodynamics parameters such as velocity, wall shear stress, and oscillatory shear index were calculated. The following results were observed: one of the four models only needs the left feeding artery; the max normalized wall shear stress locates at the aneurysmal neck of the largest aneurysm; themax oscillatory shear index locates at the aneurysmal sac of the largest aneurysm. The conclusion was drawn that the anterior communicating artery aneurysm has higher rupture risk from the hemodynamics viewpoint if the max wall shear stress locates at the neck and the max oscillatory shear index locates at the dome.
Non-Newtonian Computational Hemodynamics in Two Patient-Specific Cerebral Aneurysms with Daughter Saccules

Abstract:Hemodynamic factors play important roles in the formation, progression and rupture of cerebral aneurysms, and the Wall Shear Stress (WSS) and Oscillatory Shear Index (OSI) on the aneurysms are considered to be correlated with their growth and rupture. In this article, two computational models based on patient-specific cerebral aneurysms with daughter saccule are constructed from 3D-RA image data, one is lateral aneurysm located in middle cerebral artery (CA1) and the other is terminal aneurysm located in anterior communicating artery (CA2), The corresponding models of the two aneurysms by removing daughter saccule are established in order to investigate the initiation and growth of the daughter saccule. The flow patterns and the distributions of hemodynamic factors in the two aneurysms before and after daughter saccule is removed are obtained by solving the governing equations with the commercial CFD software Ansys CFX11.0 under the non-Newtonian fluid assumption. By analyzing the flow patterns, it is concluded that the aneurysms with daughter saccules have more complex and unstable flow patterns and hence are prone to rupture. By comparing the distribution of OSI, a hypothesis that a high OSI causes the growth of the daughter saccule is presented.

Abstract:Vascular geometry was proposed to be one risk factor of atherosclerosis (AS). When developing this hypothesis, the discussion of geometry-wall shear stress (WSS) has often been included. However, further exploration on how various geometric parameters were affecting WSS was needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence degree of vessel geometric parameters and blood velocity on WSS. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analyses of the vertebral and basilar arteries (VA and BA, respectively) was used. Twenty patients with no plaques or vessel wall thickening at the VA and BA were included. CFD analyses using both specific vessel models and flow conditions measured by ultrasound Doppler were performed. Subsequently, CFD results were post-processed with multiple linear regression to investigate numerical correlations between geometrical and flow parameters and WSS. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis further demonstrated that the BA proximal velocity was the most influential factor positively influencing BA WSS. The lower the WSS was, the stronger the influence brought by BA average diameter would be. The regression demonstrated that the contributions brought by average diameter and proximal velocity in lower WSS regions were lower than that in higher WSS regions. Tortuosity was only positively correlated with 97.5th WSS percentile, and vessel length and curvature showed no correlation with WSS. This study quantified the influence degree of BA morphology and flow velocity on WSS, which may have practical implications for predicting hemodynamic risks.
