Abstract:Background Whether perceived stress is associated with loneliness and depressive symptoms in general adults, and to what extent sleep quality mediates the associations, remains unknown. The aim of this study was to estimate the associations of perceived stress with loneliness and depressive symptoms, and the mediating role of sleep quality in these associations. Methods Cross-sectional data on 734 participants (aged 18–87 years) were analyzed. Perceived stress was assessed using the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10; range 0–40). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI; range 0–21). Loneliness was assessed using the three-item short form of the Revised University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) loneliness scale (range 3–9). Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CESD-10) Scale (range 0–30). General linear regression models, multivariable logistic regression models, and formal mediation analysis were performed. Results After adjustment for age and sex, we found that with each 1-point increment in the perceived stress score, both the loneliness score (β = 0.07; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.06, 0.08) and depression score (β = 0.45; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.49) increased significantly. Robust results were observed when adjusting for more confounders. Furthermore, sleep quality mediated 5.3% (95% CI: 1.3%, 10.0%; P = 0.014) and 9.7% (95% CI: 6.2%, 14.0%; P < 0.001) of the associations of perceived stress score with loneliness score and depression score, respectively. Conclusions In general Chinese adults, perceived stress was positively associated with loneliness and depressive symptoms, and sleep quality partially mediated these associations. The findings reveal a potential pathway from perceived stress to mental health through sleep behaviors, and highlight the importance of implementing sleep intervention programs for promoting mental health among those who feel highly stressed.
Sleep Was Associated with Depression and Anxiety Status During Pregnancy: a Prospective Longitudinal Study

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to reveal the cross-sectional and longitudinal association of sleep with depression and anxiety among Chinese pregnant women. Pregnant women were recruited in Zhoushan Pregnant Women Cohort at Zhoushan Maternal and Child Care Hospital from 2011 to 2015. Self-rating depression scales (SDS) and self-rating anxiety scales (SAS) were used for evaluating depression and anxiety status at each trimester; corresponding sleep quality and duration were reported by pregnant women. Ordinary or multilevel linear and logistic regression model were used to estimate the cross-sectional or longitudinal association of sleep with depression and anxiety. The prevalence rates were 35.64, 24.23, and 26.24% for depression and 22.57, 17.41, and 21.04% for anxiety at 1st (T1), 2nd (T2), and 3rd trimester (T3), respectively. Controlling for potential confounders, it revealed significant cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of sleep with depression and anxiety status. In cross-sectional analysis, women who slept less than 8 h/day had higher risk of depression (T1: OR (95%CI) = 1.75 (1.39, 2.20); T2: 1.52 (1.26, 2.05); T3: 1.60 (1.18, 2.05)) and anxiety (T1: 2.00 (1.57, 2.55); T2: 1.86 (1.37, 2.54); T3: 1.33 (0.99, 1.79)). In the longitudinal analysis, multilevel model revealed that women with subjective “fair” or “bad” sleep quality had elevated risk of depression (OR ranging from 1.54 to 3.71) and anxiety (2.38 to 7.53) during pregnancy. Prenatal depression and anxiety status were prevalent in pregnant women. Sleep quality was associated with depression and anxiety status in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, implying that improving sleep quality should benefit for mental health of pregnant women.
Mediating effects of depressive symptoms on social support and quality of life among rural older Chinese.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:It is not well clear how psychosocial factors like depressive symptoms, social support affect quality of life in rural elderly in China. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the association between social support and quality of life. METHODS:Cross-sectional data of 420 rural elderly were taken from four villages in Hangzhou City. They were interviewed with a demographic questionnaire, the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression, the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) for social support, and the short version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment (WHOQOL-BREF) for quality of life. Mediation was examined by a nonparametric Bootstrapping method, controlling for socioeconomic variables. RESULTS:Poor quality of life was associated with low social support and increased depressive symptoms. A significant indirect effect of social support existed through depression in relation to quality of life (ab = 0.0213, 95% CI [0.0071, 0.0421]), accounting for 9.5% of the effect of social support on quality of life. Approximately 4.8% of the variance in QOL was attributable to the indirect effect of social support through depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS:Depressive symptoms mediated the impact of social support on quality of life among rural older adults.
The relationship between self-assessment living standard and mental health among the older in rural China: the mediating role of sleep quality

Abstract:Abstract Background and objective Mental health imbalance are the main cause of anxiety, depression and happiness reduction in the older. Self-assessment living standard and sleep quality are both influencing factors of mental health. Meantime, self-assessment living standard has an impact on sleep quality. But there’s no research on the relationship between the three, we conducted this study to explore the relationship between self-assessment living standard and mental health and the mediating role of sleep quality among the older in rural areas of China. Methods Using typical field sampling method, M County, Anhui Province was selected as the investigation site, and a total of 1223 respondents were selected. With the help of questionnaires enclosing respondents’ sociodemographics information, 12 Items General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Scale (PSQI), face-to-face interviews were used to collect data. Bootstrap test was used for data analysis. Results The results showed that the age of the respondents ranged from 60 to 99 years, with an average age of (66.53 ± 6.77) years, the proportion of the older with a tendency to mental health problems was 24.7%. Most of the older people’s self-assessment living standard was normal (average score was 2.89 ± 0.726), accounting for 59.3% of the total. The average sleep quality score was (6.97 ± 4.066), and 2.5% of the respondents reported serious sleep problems. older with low self- assessment living standards were more likely to report a higher propensity for psychological problems ( β = 0.420, P < 0.001) and poorer sleep quality ( β = 0.608, P < 0.001) than older with high self- assessment living standards. Mental health of the older may be related to sleep quality ( β = 0.117, P < 0.001). In addition, the effect of self- assessment living standard on mental health was significantly mediated by sleep quality ( β = 0.071, P < 0.001). Conclusion Mental health is associated with self-assessment living standard, with this association mediated by sleep quality. A reasonable mechanism needs to be established to improve self-assessment living standard and sleep quality.

Abstract:Background: The relationship between age-friendliness of community (AFC), mental health and sleep quality is still unclear. Method: Using a sample of Chinese older adults aged ≥60 years (N = 3099), this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the serial mediating roles of resilience and depressive symptoms between AFC and sleep quality through structural equation modeling. Additionally, this study examined the association between each AFC dimension and sleep quality stratified by mental health, using the multivariable linear regression models. Mental health was categorized based on levels of resilience and depressive symptoms. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The AFC dimensions included housing, transportation, built environment, social participation, as well as social inclusion and health services. Results: Resilience and depressive symptoms completely mediated the relationship between AFC and sleep quality through three paths: (1) the independent mediating role of resilience or (2) depressive symptoms, and (3) the serial mediating roles of resilience and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, higher AFC and higher age-friendliness in transportation dimension as well as social inclusion and health services dimension were associated with better sleep quality among older adults with high levels of mental health. Conclusions: Resilience and depressive symptoms played serial mediating roles in the relationship between AFC and sleep quality. For older adults with low or medium levels of mental health, a community-based approach may not be recommended. Limitations: This cross-sectional study used self-reported sleep measures and could not make cause inferences.
Serial mediation effect of physical activity and sleep quality between dietary behaviour and depression symptoms: A nationwide cross-sectional survey

Abstract:Background: Substantial studies have revealed the potential mechanisms underlying the link between dietary behaviour and depression symptoms. This study investigated the relationship between depression symptoms and dietary behaviour, physical activity, and sleep quality in a nationwide sample of Chinese residents.Methods: A total of 18 819 Chinese Residents completed the dietary behaviour, patient health questionnaire, international physical activity questionnaire, and Pittsburgh sleep quality index. We used the Hayes' serial mediation model to investigate the correlation between the variables.Results: Among the participants, 85.5% were aged between 18 and 59, 41.2% were male, and 73.8% were urban residents. There is a negative correlation between dietary behaviour and physical activity (r = -0.038, P < 0.001), while there is a positive correlation with depression symptoms (r = 0.238, P < 0.001) and sleep quality (r = 0.115, P < 0.001). Additionally, depression shows a positive correlation with physical activity (r = 0.024, P < 0.001) and sleep quality (r = 0.298, P < 0.001), while there is a negative correlation between physical activity and sleep quality (r = -0.035, P < 0.001). Dietary behaviour was found to be connected with depression symptoms via three mediation pathways: (1) physical activity (B = -0.003, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.016, -0.007), (2) sleep quality (B = 0.034, 95% CI = 0.126, 0.164), and (3) physical activity and sleep quality (B = 0.001, 95% CI = 0.001, 0.003).Conclusions: These findings highlight the significance of psychological and physical factors in exploring the mechanisms through which dietary behaviour is related to depression symptoms. Overall, this study showed the important role of lifestyle factors in depression symptoms, suggesting that appropriate dietary behaviours, appropriate physical activity, and good sleep quality are necessary for the avoidance or improvement of depression symptoms.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Physical inactivity exacerbates poorer sleep quality, but potential underlying mechanisms of this association remain unknown. The present study aims to disentangle the pathways linking psychical activity to sleep quality through the serial mediation effect of anxiety and depression in a Chinese population.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Data analyzed were from Guangdong Sleep and Psychosomatic Health Survey, a cross-sectional population-based study with a representative sample of adult inhabitants aged 18-85 years living in Guangdong province, China. A total of 13,768 participants were included with the response rate of 80.4%. Singe and serial mediation analyses were conducted to examine whether anxiety and depression mediated the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality, independently and jointly.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Both direct and indirect effects of physical activity on sleep quality were found. As predicted, anxiety and depression mediated the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality (B <sub>Anxiety</sub> = -0.17, 95% bootstrap CI: -0.20 to -0.15; B <sub>Depression</sub>= -0.25, 95% bootstrap CI: -0.28 to -0.21), respectively. In addition, serial mediation analyses indicated that the association of physical activity and sleep quality is mediated by anxiety and depression in a sequential manner (B = -0.13, 95% bootstrap CI: -0.15 to -0.11).</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Limitations</h3><p>The primary limitation of the study is the cross-sectional design, which limits the causal inference ability.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>These findings highlight the role of anxiety and depression as serial mediators of the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality. Thus, exercise-based programs focusing on improving sleep could benefit from a multi-faceted approach therapeutically targeting psychiatric disorders.</p>

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to explore the relationship between sleep patterns and depressive symptoms among adolescents, examining variations in depressive symptoms across different sleep qualities, durations, and habits. Method: A cross-sectional survey was conducted, gathering data from 8,775 Chinese adolescents on their demographics, lifestyle habits, sleep quality and duration, and depressive symptoms. The association between sleep parameters and depressive symptoms was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. Findings: The findings reveal a significant correlation between sleep quality/duration and depressive symptoms. Specifically, adolescents with poor sleep quality had higher depressive scores (mean score = 14.62, standard deviation = 5.71), significantly exceeding those with better sleep quality (mean score = 11.54, standard deviation = 4.69). Adolescents with shorter sleep duration also showed significantly higher depressive scores than those with moderate sleep duration. Importantly, adolescents experiencing both poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration were at a significantly increased risk of depressive symptoms (OR = 4.04, 95% CI: 3.53–4.62, P < 0.001). Further analysis indicated that older age and lower family economic status were independent predictors of a higher risk of adolescent depression (OR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.08–1.38, P = 0.001), whereas factors such as gender, ethnicity, residence, being an only child, and parental education levels were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Among Chinese adolescents, poor sleep quality and shorter sleep duration are independent predictors of higher depressive symptom scores. Adolescents experiencing both of these conditions simultaneously have a significantly increased risk of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, older age and lower family economic status are also significantly related to an increased risk of depression in adolescents. These findings emphasize the importance of improving sleep quality and optimizing sleep duration for the prevention of adolescent depression. They also suggest the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses the multifaceted factors influencing adolescent mental health, including sleep patterns and socioeconomic disparities.

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression in Northwest China. Method: Depression was diagnosed at the hospital and self-reported by the participants in the baseline survey. Sleep duration and problems, including difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, early morning awakening, daytime dysfunction, use of sleeping pills or drugs, and any sleep problems, were obtained by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for exploring the association between sleep duration, sleep problems, and depression, adjusting for demographic and socioeconomic characteristics and health behaviors. The association between depression and sleep duration was also evaluated continuously with restricted cubic spline curves based on logistic models. Results: 36,515 adults from Regional Ethnic Cohort Study in Northwest China were included. About 24.04% of participants reported short sleep duration (<7 h), and 15.64% reported long sleep duration (≥9 h). Compared with standard sleep duration (7–9 h), short sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of depression (OR: 1.69, 95%CI: 1.26–2.27, p = 0.001). Self-reported sleep problems were also related to four times depression risk increased (OR: 4.02, 95%CI: 3.03–5.35, p < 0.001) compared with no sleep problems. In addition, a nonlinear relationship was found between sleep duration and depression after adjusting covariates ( p = 0.043). Conclusion: Sleep duration and sleep problems are associated with depression. Enough sleep time and healthy sleep habits in life course might be a practical health promotion approach to reduce depression risk in Northwest Chinese adults. A further study from cohort study is needed to verify the temporal association.

The role of mental health and physical activity in the association between sleep quality and quality of life among rural elderly in China: A moderated mediation model

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Several studies have found that poor sleep quality appeared to be negatively associated with quality of life in older adults, but the mechanism underlying this association remained unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine whether mental health mediated the association between sleep quality and quality of life among rural elderly and to explore the moderated role of physical activity between mental health and quality of life.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Data were extracted from the baseline survey of rural elderly household health services in Shandong province, in which 3,243 older adults aged 60 years and above were included. The moderated mediation models were examined using SPSS PROCESS Version 3.4 software, in which the mediation variable was mental health, and the moderation variable was physical activity.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>We found that mental health partially mediated the effect of sleep quality on quality of life [indirect effect = -0.158, 95% confidence intervals (CI) = -0.185, -0.133], with the mediating effect accounting for 51% of the total effect. The indirect effect was moderated by physical activity (<em>β =</em> 0.056, <em>p</em> < 0.001), and a greater effect was observed among older adults with lower level of physical activity.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Limitations</h3><p>We included two mediators in one model, and interpretation of the observed associative direction was limited.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>Physical activity moderated the indirect effect of mental health on association between sleep quality and quality of life. Encouraging the rural elderly to increase physical activity appropriately might improve the quality of life for the elderly with poor sleep quality and mental health problems.</p>

Effect of Sleep Quality on Anxiety and Depression Symptoms among College Students in China’s Xizang Region: The Mediating Effect of Cognitive Emotion Regulation

Abstract:Background: While the exact mechanisms are not fully understood, there are significant links between sleep quality, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and cognitive emotion regulation. This research examines how sleep quality affects anxiety and depressive symptoms, as well as the potential of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) to moderate the impact of sleep quality on these symptoms. Methods: The Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (CPSQI), the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ), the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) were all completed online by students from two colleges in China’s Xizang region. Results: The study included 4325 subjects. The prevalence of poor sleep quality, anxiety symptoms, and depression symptoms was 45.69%, 36.81%, and 51.86%, respectively. We observed significant direct effects on poor sleep and severity of anxiety/depression: c’1 = 0.586 (0. 544–0.628), and c’2 = 0.728 (0.683–0.773). Adaptive CERS only had a mediating effect on the relationship between sleep quality and depression symptoms, with a1b3 = −0.005 (−0.011–−0.001). The link between poor sleep quality and the intensity of anxiety and depression was significantly affected by the indirect effects of maladaptive CERS: effect a2b2 = 0.126 (0.106–0.147), and effect a2b4 = 0.145 (0.123–0.167). Conclusions: Individuals who experience poor sleep quality are more likely to have increased levels of anxiety and depression. However, enhancing sleep quality led to a decrease in anxiety and depression levels. Adaptive CERS did not predict anxiety, but they did predict depression. Multiple maladaptive CERS could increase levels of anxiety and depression. To prevent mental stress, it is crucial to examine sleep problems among college students, understand their cognitive strategies, promote the adoption of adaptive CERS, and reduce the reliance on maladaptive CERS.

Abstract:Background: Depressive status of medical personnel worldwide and especially in China is an important public health and social problem. There is a strong relationship between education and depression, but no studies have studied grouping healthcare workers (HCWs) with different educational degree to discuss whether there are differences in the factors that affect depression. This study aims to examine the role of job satisfaction and sleep quality in the relationship between work stress and depression among Chinese HCWs, and teste whether the mediation models are differed by the differences of educational degree. Methods: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scale was used to test depression. Work stress was assessed using the Challenge-blocking stress scale (CBSS). Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). HCWs' satisfaction with their current work was assessed using the Job Satisfaction Index (JSI). The representative sample of HCWs was chosen using a multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling procedure and 844 HCWs were utilized to the statistical analysis of the study. Results: In the overall sample, sleep quality could mediate the relationship between work stress and depression in healthcare workers (p < 0.001, CMIN/DF = 3.816, GFI = 0.911, AGFI = 0.886, IFI = 0.943, TLI = 0.933, CFI = 0.942, RMSEA = 0.058, SRMR = 0.055, AIC = 1039.144), and the mediating effect accounted for 36.5%. After grouping educational qualifications, the model with sleep quality and job satisfaction as mediating variables reported a better fit in the group with low educational qualifications. The intermediary effect accounted for 50.6 and 4.43%, respectively. The highly educated group only has sleep quality as an intermediary variable in the structural model, and the mediating effect accounted for 75.4% (p < 0.001, CMIN/DF = 2.596, GFI = 0.887, AGFI = 0.857, IFI = 0.937, TLI = 0.926, CFI = 0.937, RMSEA = 0.044, SRMR = 0.056, AIC = 1481.322). Conclusion: In the overall sample, sleep quality could mediate the relationship between work stress and depression in HCWs. Among HCWs with technical secondary school education and below, job satisfaction can mediate the positive relationship between work stress and depression, while this mediating effect is not significant among HCWs with college degree and above.
Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury and suicidal attempt among Chinese adolescents: The mediation role of sleep quality

Abstract:Background: Associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicide attempt (SA) are not well understood. We aimed to examine these associations among Chinese adolescents, and whether any potential association is mediated through sleep quality. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 1,771 (994 boys [56.1%] and 777 girls [43.9%], mean [SD] age was 12.9 [0.6] years) adolescents who participated in the baseline survey of the Chinese Adolescent Health Growth Cohort (CAHGC) study. Depressive symptoms, anxiety symptoms, NSSI, SA and sleep quality were measured by validated questionnaire. Logistic regression models were employed to estimate the associations of depression and anxiety with NSSI and SA. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore the mediate effect of sleep quality. Results: The 12-month prevalence of NSSI and SA was 17.1 and 8.3%, respectively. Depressive and anxiety symptoms were significantly associated with NSSI (the adjusted odds ratio [aOR] was 1.89 [95% CI 1.34–2.65] for depressive symptoms and 2.84 [95% CI 2.05–3.94] for anxiety symptoms) and SA (the aOR was 3.20 [95% CI 2.03–5.05] for depressive symptoms and 2.98 [95% CI 1.84–4.84] for anxiety symptoms). No significant gender differences were found in the associations. The mediation proportion of sleep quality on the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI, as well as depressive and anxiety symptoms with SA were 21.1, 13.9, 13.6, and 14.7, respectively. Conclusion: Independent associations of depressive and anxiety symptoms with NSSI and SA were observed in Chinese adolescents, and there were no significant gender differences in the associations. Moreover, these associations were partially mediated through sleep quality. Targeted interventions for adolescents' NSSI and SA should focus on those who have depressive and anxiety symptoms, and poor sleep quality.

Abstract:Objective: Sleep problems and their detrimental effects on adolescents' physical and mental health have received substantial attention. Prior studies have focused mainly on the direct association between sleep and mental health; however, little is known about the underlying mediating mechanism. To address this gap, the present study constructed a chain mediation model to examine the association between sleep deficiency and mental health status in adolescents, by introducing two mediating variables-physical health perception and school adjustment. Methods: A sample of 7530 senior high school students completed a battery of self-report questionnaires measuring their sleep duration, mental health status, physical health perception, and school adjustment. Data were collected from the Database of Youth Health at Shandong University. All the measures showed good reliability and validity in the present study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and the SPSS PROCESS. Results: The results were as follows: (1) Sleep duration was significantly associated with physical health perception and mental health. (2) Physical health perception partially mediated the association between sleep and mental health. (3) Physical health perception and school adjustment played a chain mediating role between sleep and mental health. In conclusion, sleep not only directly associated with mental health among adolescents, but also influences mental health by the chain mediating effect of perception of physical health and school adjustment. Conclusion: These findings in the present study contribute to understanding the mechanisms underlying the association between sleep and mental health and have important implications for interventions aimed at improving mental health status among adolescents in China. Our results indicated that promoting adequate sleep duration and improving sleep quality are possible key mental health promotion strategies for adolescents.
Associations between Sleep Quality, Depression, and Mild Cognitive Impairment in Community-dwelling Older Persons

Abstract:Abstract Background Few studies have examined the trilateral relationships among sleep quality, depression, and cognitive function. Therefore, this study aimed to explore these relationships in an older population. Furthermore, we examined mediation models for sleep quality, depression, and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods From December 2020 to July 2021, a cross-sectional survey was conducted among 5000 older people 60 years and over in Shanghai communities, of whom 4897 (97.9%) provided responses, using a random cluster sampling method. Sleep quality and depression status were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and 30-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30), respectively. The Barthel Index (BADL) and Ascertain Dementia 8 (AD-8) scales were combined to assess cognitive function. T-tests and chi-square tests were used to compare the sociodemographic characteristics of the participants. Pearson’s correlations were used to determine the direction and strength of the relationships between the primary variables. We further assessed the mediating role of sleep quality and depression. Results The prevalence of MCI was 21.7%. After adjusting for covariates, there were bidirectional relationships between sleep quality and depression and between MCI and depression. The significant mediating effect of sleep quality on the association between depressive symptoms and cognition function (95% CI: 0.0011 to 0.0026, p = 0.001) and mediated19.29% of the total effect of depressive symptoms on cognitive function. The mediation analysis showed that sleep quality had an indirect effect on cognitive function through the mediating variable of depression (95% CI: 0.0030 to 0.0050, p = 0.001) and mediated 36.50% of the total effect of sleep quality on cognitive function. Meanwhile, sleep quality partially mediated the relationship between cognitive function and depression symptoms (95% CI: 0.4594 to 0.7643, p = 0.001) and mediated26.77% of the total effect of cognitive function on depression. Conclusion Sleep quality and depression had significant direct (independent) and indirect (as a mediator) effects on MCI. We believe that improving screening for depression and sleep quality among older persons could significantly contribute to their health and well-being.

Abstract:•Individuals who slept ≤6h per night (OR=2.67, 95% CI 1.88–3.79) and who slept poorly (OR=2.91, 95% CI 2.16–3.91) were more likely to suffer from life dissatisfaction compared with those who slept 7–8h among Chinese adults aged 70–84 years.•The aforementioned associations were partially mediated by depression, with mediating effects of 13.9% and 13.3% for short sleep duration and sleep quality, respectively.•Appropriate sleep duration and good sleep quality are beneficial to LS among older adults.•Reducing the occurrence of depression, an additional goal of maintaining a good sleep status, also improves LS.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigated the association between social anxiety and sleep quality and further explored the potential mediating role of internet addiction in depressed adolescents. Methods: This study included 440 Chinese depressed adolescents (mean age = 15.0 years, SD = 2.0). Participants completed questionnaires, including Social Avoidance and Social Distress Scale, Internet Addiction Test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. A structural equation model was used to analyze the association between social anxiety and sleep quality, with internet addiction as a mediator. Gender differences were examined by multi-group analysis. Results: Among participants, 61.8% reported poor sleep quality. The sleep quality was significantly different on the level of gender ( p = 0.016), education level ( p = 0.043), and family history ( p = 0.002). Sleep quality was positively associated with social anxiety ( p < 0.001) and internet addiction ( p < 0.001). Furthermore, internet addiction partially mediated the relationship between social anxiety and sleep quality, and the mediation effect ratio was 16.1% ( p < 0.001). Finally, no significant differences were found in this mechanism. Conclusion: We concluded that both social anxiety and internet addiction were risk factors for depressed adolescents' poor sleep quality. Social anxiety further affected sleep quality through internet addiction.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the mediating effects of ADL and depression on the relationship between sleep quality and HRQOL among older people in rural China, while also exploring the moderating impact of loneliness. The study gathered data from a household survey conducted among 1587 Chinese rural older adults (mean age = 73.63 years). The collected data was analyzed using SPSS version 23.0 software (IBM, New York, USA) and the PROCESS macro version 4.0 program. The findings indicated a significant correlation between sleep quality, ADL, depression, loneliness and HRQOL. ADL and depression exhibited a chain mediation effect on the relationship between sleep quality and HRQOL. Notably, the association between sleep quality and HRQOL was entirely mediated by ADL and depression. Additionally, loneliness acted as a moderator in the relationship between ADL and HRQOL. The findings of this study suggest that interventions focusing on sleep quality should prioritize strategies for enhancing older adults' ADL and depression as integral components of promoting older adults' HRQOL.
