Abstract:The presence of dyes as pollutants in wastewater sources from textile industries can cause significant health issues if they are not adequately treated. Dye adsorption to entrap contaminants in nanoparticle pores has created considerable attention in recent years due to the environmental concerns occurring as a result of spillage of dyes in water bodies. In efforts to understand adsorption capability UiO-66, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were developed and examined for the separation of four pollutant dyes containing methyl red (MR), methyl orange (MO), malachite green (MG), and methylene blue (MB), which are widely used in textile industries. The adsorbent structural stability in water, chloroform, and dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied for one year period to understand their chemical stability. The UiO-66 crystalline structure remained unchanged in water and chloroform, while XRD patterns of UiO-66 aged in DMF showed only a minor change, which might be due to the partially exterior framework collapse. The maximum adsorption capacities of pristine UiO-66 for anionic methyl red (MR) (384 mg/g) and methyl orange (MO) (454 mg/g) dyes were slightly higher than those of the cationic malachite green (MG) (133 mg/g) and methylene blue (MB) (370 mg/g) dyes, particularly at lower pH values. The partition coefficients of pristine UiO-66 for MR, MO, MG, and MB dyes were found to be 1.137, 2.208, 0.070, and 1.345 mg/g µM, respectively, which indicated that pristine UiO-66 had a good affinity to MO dye. The adsorption results perfectly matched the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The MR, MO, and MB adsorption isotherms have matched the Langmuir model, while MG isotherms are in line with the Freundlich model. The distinctive features of the UiO-66 framework make it potentially applicable for the treatment of wastewater.

Abstract:The exceptional structural stability of UiO-66 metal–organic framework (MOF) and ligands' functional groups render UiO-66 as a versatile candidate for multiple applications, including wastewater treatment. The possibility of a broad spectrum of post-synthetic modification of UiO-66 further expands its prospective uses. However, commercial applications of UiO-66 have been hindered by the polycrystalline nature of the powder. In this research, modification to obtain UiO-66-NH 2 and post-processing with nanofibers comprising chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were applied to faciliate deployment as a suitable option for water decontamination. MOF nanoparticles were post-synthetically modified with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine (TCT) and 5-phenyl-tetrazole (PT) to produce high-amine containing UiO-66, thus introducing active nitrogen-containing functional groups that enhanced the removal efficiency of targeted molecules from aqueous media. A systematic study was undertaken to optimize the supporting nanofibers and to demonstrate that even a low MOF functionalization, of up to 7- wt%, offered a maximum methyl orange adsorption capacity of 619 mg/g, superior to most adsorbents reported so far. Furthermore, selectivity, regeneration ability, and the effect of ambient conditions were demonstrated.

Abstract:A succession of Zr-based porphyrinic metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are synthesized with metalation and utilized as adsorbents for removal of the cationic dye malachite green (MG) and the anionic dye methyl orange (MO). Results show the optimal adsorbent is MOF-525(Co) and the removal efficiencies for MG and MO by MOF-525(Co) are 99.0% and 90.5% at 60 min as the initial dye concentration is 100 mg L −1 . The N 2 adsorption/desorption results indicate the high surface area, micropore of MOF-525(Co); the FT-IR spectra and adsorption thermodynamics results demonstrate that the adsorption mechanisms of both MG and MO by MOF-525(Co) belong to the π-π stacking interactions of physical adsorption, and the hydrogen bonds and Co–O bond of chemical adsorption. Additionally, the optimal pH of dye adsorption is 7.0 for MG and 3.0 for MO, and the adsorption capacities of MG and MO decrease in saline solution. The adsorption kinetics reveal that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model is better for illustrating the adsorption performances of both dyes by MOF-525(Co); the adsorption isotherm models suggest that the Freundlich model is fitted for MG adsorption but the Langmuir is fitted for MO. Furthermore, the adsorption processes can be demonstrated as spontaneous, exothermic for MG but endothermic for MO, and with negative entropy by thermodynamics data. In conclusion, MOF-525(Co) possesses a significant adsorption ability and excellent reusability for MG, and it could be a promising adsorbent for MG removal.

Abstract:To address the limitations of gel-based adsorbents, such as inadequate mechanical strength, low adsorption capacity, and limited reusability, this study presents an innovative approach employing a dual network gel. The dual network consists of calcium alginate (CA) ionic crosslinked organic networks, and vinyl silica-based nanoparticles (VSNP) as crosslinking agents in acrylic acid (AA) free radical polymerization networks (denoted as P (AA- co -VSNP), abbreviated as PAV). After freeze-drying, ultimately yielding an organic/inorganic hybrid dual network gel (referred to as CA/P(AA-co-VSNP), abbreviated as CPAV), enriched with abundant functional groups, thereby enhancing material reusability. To further enhance the adsorption capacity, CPAV undergoes hydrothermal reactions to obtain metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composite dual network gel adsorbent (UiO-66@CPAV). UiO-66@CPAV exhibited a density of 0.165 g/cm 3 and showcased a unique pore structure with nested macropores and mesopores, featuring a uniform distribution of pore holes. Notably, the specific surface area was measured at 96.3 m 2 /g, and an average pore diameter was 17.9 nm. Most impressively, the actual maximum adsorption capacity reached 841.7 mg/g, and even after 10 cycles of use, the adsorption capacity remained 91.9 % of its initial value. Overall, this research introduced a novel methodology for the development of dual network MOFs@gel adsorbents, showcasing promising advancements in the field.

Abstract:UiO-66-NH 2 is an efficient material for removing pollutants from wastewater due to its high specific surface area, high porosity and water stability. However, recycling them from wastewater is difficult. In this study, the cellulose nanofibers mat deacetylated from cellulose acetate nanofibers were used to combine with UiO-66-NH 2 by the method of in-situ growth to remove the toxic dye, rose bengal. Compared to previous work, the prepared composite could not only provide ease of separation of UiO-66-NH 2 from the water after adsorption but also demonstrate better adsorption capacity (683 mg·g −1 ( T = 25 °C, pH = 3)) than that of the simple UiO-66-NH 2 (309.6 mg·g −1 ( T = 25 °C, pH = 3)). Through the analysis of adsorption kinetics and isotherms, the adsorption for rose bengal is mainly suitable for the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Freundlich model. Furthermore, the relevant research revealed that the main adsorption mechanism of the composite was electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π — π interaction. Overall, the approach depicts an efficient model for integrating metal-organic frameworks on cellulose nanofibers to improve metal-organic framework recovery performance with potentially broad applications.

Abstract:In the present work, UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite adsorbent was fabricated using the in-situ crosslinking-gelation method, characterized by different techniques, and finally used for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution. Adsorption studies were performed using batch experiments and the influencing operational parameters such as contact time, initial pH solution, temperature, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH PZC , swelling, regeneration, and reuse of the adsorbent were investigated. The various kinetic models (pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, Elovich, and intraparticle diffusion) and isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich) were used to analysis of the experiment results. The results were best fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacity of dye on the adsorbent was obtained at 9.96 mg/g at pH = 11. The value of pH PZC for the adsorbent was obtained at about 8. According to thermodynamic parameters, the dye adsorption was found as spontaneous and endothermic due to the negative value of the ΔG° and ΔH°. After 4 times of reusability cycles, the adsorption efficiency remained above 86 %, which represented a certain regeneration ability. As a result, this research indicates that UiO-66/xanthan gum/alginate bionanocomposite can be utilized as a promising bio-adsorbent for azo dye removal from contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:The striped bass, Morone saxatilis (Walbaum), once represented an important resource for fisheries in the St Lawrence River (Quebec, Canada). A restoration programme, involving captive propagation, was implemented with the objective of restocking the population, which had disappeared in the late 1960s. An unusually high rate of mortality was observed during the winter of 2006 in captive-raised fingerlings that were originally collected from the Miramichi River (New Brunswick, Canada) the previous summer. Post-mortem examinations revealed extensive granulomatous and hyperplastic peritonitis associated with numerous nematodes of the genus Philometra. Given the severity of the lesions, high intensity of infection by Philometra sp. was presumed to be the primary factor in the unusual mortalities reported that winter. Observations suggest that this nematode, which was acquired in the wild, cannot establish itself in a captive environment, most likely because of the absence of the obligate intermediate host. Examination of archived specimens of striped bass showed that this parasite was probably present in the St Lawrence River population prior to its extirpation. Consequently, the introduction of infected fish into this ecosystem should not be a concern. Nevertheless, infection-related mortalities of fingerlings might affect dynamics of wild striped bass populations.
Efficient dye removal using fixed-bed process based on porous montmorillonite nanosheet/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate hydrogel beads

Abstract:In this study, Montmorillonite nanosheet/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/sodium alginate hydrogel beads with high handle capacity towards dyes effluent was investigated. Montmorillonite nanosheet cooperated with acrylamide and acrylic acid via hydrogen bond, amidation and polymerization interaction first, then crosslinked with sodium alginate by intertwining interaction to form 3D network structure, achieving free entrance and rapid adsorption for dye molecules. Batch adsorption tests revealed a multilayer and heterogeneous adsorption of methylene blue (MB) onto hydrogel beads according to pseudo two-order kinetic model and Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption capacity of MB was controlled by the amount of adsorption sites in hydrogel beads, which could reach maximum of 530.7 mg/g. The adsorption mechanism is attributed to Ca ion-exchange and chemical bonding of COOH and OH groups with MB. Column tests showed an excellent dynamic adsorption performance of hydrogel beads towards MB wastewater compared with the traditional commercial adsorbents of granular active carbon and cation exchange resin, which achieved 380 bed volume (BV) of treated sewage to meet the emission standards using the single column. Moreover, 1625 BV and more treated dye effluent was achieved to be safety discharged via double column series in 5 circulation-regeneration, indicating the great potential of hydrogel beads in practical application. Such hydrogel realized the performance promotion of macromolecule polymers and nanoclay in materials design, and green application in water treatment.

Abstract:Organic dye contaminants pose increasing threats to water ecological systems and global sustainability. Rational development of functional particles with adsorption-catalysis synergy is envisioned as a powerful route for enhanced water remediation. Here, hierarchical porous MOF-integrated alginate particles with synergized adsorption and photocatalytic degradation is developed for effective water remediation. The particles exhibit unique mesh-like Ca-alginate (CaAlg) networks with incorporated macro-/micro-porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles, both modified with negatively-charged tannic acid (TA). The TA-modified mesh-like CaAlg (CaAlg@TA) networks serve as highly porous absorbents, while the TA-modified ZIF-8 (ZIF-8@TA) nanoparticles serve as both hierarchical porous nano-absorbents and photoactive nano-catalysts. This combination simultaneously harnesses the advantages of CaAlg@TA networks and ZIF-8@TA nanoparticles to achieve adsorption-photocatalysis synergy for efficient water remediation. As demonstrated by removal of toxic and carcinogenic dye methylene blue (MB), these particles show much higher performances with fast adsorption and high capacity (1277 mg g −1 ), as compared to control group particles without adsorption-photocatalysis synergy. Meanwhile, the adsorption-photocatalysis synergy largely suppresses undesired secondary water contamination from the MB-adsorbed particles, and benefits particle regeneration to achieve good reusability for repeated MB removal (>95.5 % for 10 cycles). This work provides a simple and flexible route for rational fabrication of MOF-integrated particles with adsorption-photocatalysis synergy, and thus may open up new horizons for developing advanced functional particles for effective water remediation.

Abstract:The vast discharge of methylene blue (MB) dye in industrial effluent, risks the ecological environment, thus making its removal unavoidable. Recently, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) due to their larger pore volume, surface area and easy synthesis have proved to be exceptionally promising materials for contaminant treatment. Based on 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) as a modifier, a new composite material consisting of BTC and Zr-based MOF (UIO-66-BTC) was fabricated for the effective removal of MB from the effluent. Its synthesis and efficient application has been confirmed by characterization analysis. The influencing factors, adsorption isotherms, and adsorption kinetics of MB adsorption by adsorbent were studied. It was demonstrated that the removal rate of MB adsorption by UIO-66-BTC reached 98.45% and the adsorption amount reached 393.80 mg g-1 at temperature (298 K), pH 7, adsorbent dosage (0.5 g L-1), MB initial concentration (200 mg L-1), and contact time of 720 min, respectively. The maximum adsorption of MB by UIO-66-BTC was 20.827 times higher than that of UIO-66 (18.908 mg g-1). The experimental data fits with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm, implying that the adsorption process is a monolayer chemisorption process. The thermodynamic and regeneration experiments showed that the spontaneous process enhanced the adsorption of MB at lower temperatures and the adsorption efficiency of MB remained above 68% after five successive cycles. The mechanism of MB adsorption on adsorbents is mainly based on electrostatic interactions, pore filling, hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions. It is concluded that this new adsorbent can be effectively used to treat MB in effluents.
Lignin-modified metal–organic framework as an effective adsorbent for the removal of methyl orange

Abstract:Herein, lignin-modified metal–organic frameworks (NH 2 -UIO@L) are prepared using a one-step synthesis as sorbents for the removal of organic dyes from water. The introduction of lignin improved the adsorption sites. NH 2 -UIO@L 2 adsorption of MO conforms to Langmuir model, and the adsorption capacity of NH 2 -UIO@L 2 on MO was 214.13 mg·L −1 with an adsorption efficiency up to 99.28 %, which was significantly higher than values for other adsorbents. Due to hydrogen bonds, π – π interactions and electrostatic interactions, MO was effectively removed by NH 2 -UIO@L 2 and its adsorption efficiency is maintained at 90.55 % after six cycles. The adsorption kinetics showed that the NH 2 -UIO@L 2 adsorption of MO was chemical adsorption and controlled by intraparticle diffusion and external mass transfer. Further, the adsorption performance of NH 2 -UIO@L 2 on MO and MB in mixed MO/MB solution was investigated. The adsorption capacity of NH 2 -UIO@L 2 in mixed MO/MB solution was 207.04 mg·L −1 for MO and 243.31 mg·L −1 for MB; the adsorption of NH 2 -UIO@L 2 on MO followed the Dubinin-Radushkevich and pseudo-second-order models, and the adsorption on MB followed the Temkin and pseudo-second-order models. Hydrogen bonds, π – π interactions, and pore filling are all implicated in the removal of MO and MB. In particular, the electrostatic attraction between MB and MO improves the adsorption efficiency of NH 2 -UIO@L 2 on MB. NH 2 -UIO@L 2 has good reusability, maintaining an adsorption efficiency of 97.66 % for MO and up to 99.15 % for MB after six cycles. Its simple preparation and superior adsorption suggest that NH 2 -UIO@L 2 has considerable potential to remove organic dyes from wastewater.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOF) have attracted great attention in the field of wastewater treatment. When MOF nanoparticles are used for adsorption applications, the nanoparticles normally have to be separated from the dispersed suspension by filtration or centrifugation for regeneration or recycling. In order to avoid this costly and time consuming process, MOF (NH2-MIL-125) nanofibrous hybrid membranes with photocatalytic properties were successfully fabricated in this study. The MOF membranes were characterized by using XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA, BET, and UV–Vis. The adsorption (including capacity, mechanism, dynamic, and isotherm) of dyes by the membranes is studied in great detail. The membranes exhibit great adsorption capacity to methylene blue and sodium fluorescein, and the adsorption is dominated by steric hindrance of dye molecule, not the π–π interactions and the zeta potential. Most importantly, the MOF membranes could be easily separated from the dyes solution and regenerated via a visible light catalytic degradation process for recycling, and the photocatalytic mechanism is discussed.

Abstract:The water stability of typical metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) limits the practical applications in water, such as pollutants adsorption. In this work, through the pre-functionalization of hydrophobic methyl groups on the ligand, anionic Bio-MOF-1 was transformed into Bio-MOF-2Me which has excellent water stability, even in acidic and boiling water environments. Bio-MOF-2Me also keeps the negative Zeta potential, enabling it to efficiently adsorbing and separating targeted dyes in mixed aqueous solution of cationic/anionic dyes, with high removal rates of around 99%. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity of Bio-MOF-2Me for cationic methyl violet could reach up to 310.2 mg⋅g −1 . In order to improve the portability and recyclability of Bio-MOF-2Me-based adsorbents, a mixed matrix membrane (MMM) of Bio-MOF-2Me (Bio-MOF-2Me-MMM) was manufactured. Bio-MOF-2Me-MMM inherits the preferential adsorption and separation properties of Bio-MOF-2Me, which has a maximum adsorption capacity of 157.1 mg⋅g −1 for cationic methyl violet. The adsorption abilities of both Bio-MOF-2Me and Bio-MOF-2Me-MMM own good cyclic reversibility, and the removal efficiency respectively retained 82% (Bio-MOF-2Me) and 72% (Bio-MOF-2Me-MMM) even after five adsorption–desorption cycles. The water stability, good adsorption/separation ability, portability and reusability make ionic Bio-MOF-2Me-MMM a promising candidate for dye wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are characterised by high porosity levels and controllable structures, making them ideal adsorbents for wastewater. However, obtaining substrate materials with mechanical stability, excellent pore accessibility, and good processability for compositing MOF crystal powders to adsorb multiple pollutants in complex aqueous environments is challenging. In this study, porous MOFs@ modified cellulose sponge (MCS) composites were fabricated using MCS as a scaffold to provide anchoring sites for the coordination of Zr 4+ ions and further in situ synthesis of MOFs, namely UiO-66@MCS and UiO-66-NH 2 @MCS, which effectively removed heavy metal ions and organic dyes. MOFs@MCS composites exhibit excellent water and dimensional stability, maintaining the pore structure by ambient drying during reuse. Compared with UiO-66@MCS composite, UiO-66-NH 2 @MCS composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity of 224.5 mg·g −1 for Hg 2+ and 400.9 mg·g −1 for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption of Hg 2+ onto the MOFs@MCS composites followed the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models, whereas the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order models were more suitable for MB adsorption. Moreover, the MOFs@MCS composites exhibited excellent reusability and were selective for the removal of Hg 2+ . Overall, this approach effectively combines Zr-based MOFs with mechanically and dimensionally stable porous cellulose sponges, rendering the approach suitable for purifying complex wastewater.

Abstract:The existence of organic dyes wastewater had caused serious harm to the environment and human beings. Herein, in this study, a simple and efficient method was selected to synthesize sodium alginate gel beads adsorbent (CPS-Bead) with porous structure and high adsorption performance. Interestingly, the addition of polyamino-modified 3D carbon materials (GO-CNT) enhanced the related properties of gel beads. Moreover, the well-designed adsorbent was used to remove methylene blue (MB), malachite green (MG), crystal violet (CV), and congo red (CR) from dyes wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of CPS-Bead on MB, MG, CV and CR could reach the highest of 2191.39 mg/g, 2201.69 mg/g, 1669.11 mg/g and 2096.04 mg/g at 318 K, respectively. The kinetic behavior and the isotherm behavior of CPS-Bead was more consistent with the nonlinear model of pseudo-second-order dynamics and the Langmuir isotherm model, and the thermodynamic data showed that the adsorption process of the four dyes was automatic. In addition, CPS-Bead also demonstrated excellent adsorption performance in cyclic experiments, selectivity experiments and adsorption column experiments, which could selectively and continuously adsorb different dyes. Overall, the prepared gel beads not only showed outstanding adsorption capacity, but also the had an excellent reusability, besides, CPS-Bead had great potential industrial applications.

Rivaroxaban for Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis in Abdominoplasty: A Multicenter Experience.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Abdominoplasty, a commonly performed aesthetic procedure, is considered to have an increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) events. At present, routine VTE chemoprophylaxis following abdominoplasty remains controversial. OBJECTIVES This study evaluates the authors' experience with rivaroxaban, an oral Factor Xa inhibitor, for VTE prophylaxis in abdominoplasty patients. METHODS A retrospective case series was conducted. All patients who underwent abdominoplasty and received rivaroxaban were included. The prophylactic dose was 10 mg daily for 7 days, beginning 12 hours postoperatively. Patient demographics, comorbidities, and type of surgery were recorded. The primary outcome measured was hematologic complication, including VTE, hematoma requiring operative evacuation, and need for blood transfusion. RESULTS From September 2012 until July 2014, 132 patients (122 women and 10 men) underwent abdominoplasty surgery and received rivaroxaban postoperatively. Mean patient age was 43.7 years, and mean body mass index was 27.1. One hundred twenty-five patients also underwent abdominal muscle plication. Eleven patients underwent a fleur de lis vertical skin resection component. One hundred patients underwent concomitant abdominal liposuction, while 79 patients also had back liposuction. Only 1 patient had a symptomatic VTE event. Three patients had a hematoma requiring operative evacuation, and all went on to heal without sequelae. Two patients received a blood transfusion for anemia during their course of rivaroxaban. CONCLUSIONS Oral rivaroxaban administration for chemoprophylaxis in abdominoplasty patients is safe, with low rates of symptomatic VTE and hematoma formation. The authors continue routine use of the medication for patients at increased risk for VTE events. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE 4: Risk.
Preparation, characterization, and adsorption kinetics of methylene blue dye in sodium alginate hydrogel with improved stability

Abstract:Dye-related water pollution is a worldwide problem. This work describes a facile fabrication of the super-absorbent sodium alginate hydrogel (SA-Ca hydrogel) with improved chemical stability and biocompatibility. By combining the freeze–thaw process with calcium crosslinking, hydrogel with nanopores ranging from 10 to 200 nm was prepared. The SA-Ca hydrogel presents a swelling ratio of 90.6 g·g −1 . The effects of pH, initial concentration of the methylene blue (MB) concentration, amounts of absorbents, and temperature on adsorption capacity are investigated. At optimized conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 2986 mg·g −1 . The adsorption kinetics are analyzed using different models, and the pseudo-second-order model can be used to describe the kinetic profile. According to the thermodynamic parameters, the MB adsorption processes using SA-Ca hydrogel are favorable, spontaneous, and endothermic. The proposed SA-Ca hydrogel is expected to be an effective absorbent for water treatment without extra pollution.

Abstract:Wastewater contaminated by dye produced by the rapid industrialization is a global problem. One type of the dyes used in the industry is malachite green (MG). In this study, we reported the results of designing and synthesizing the Ca-Alginate (Metal Organic Framework (MOF)) as well as its application as an adsorbent to reduce the amount of MG in wastewater. The alginate used for the synthesis of Ca-Alginate was first obtained by extracting it from brown algae using sodium carbonate as a solvent. In this study, Ca-Alginate was obtained by ion exchange process using calcium chloride solution and calcination at a temperature of 900 °C. Based on the characterization data, it was found that the adsorbent has a macropore structure with a specific surface area of 0.614 m2/g and a total pore volume of 1.744 × 10−3 cc/g. The result of the FTIR characterization showed the presence of hydroxyl groups, symmetrical and asymmetrical carboxyl groups, and mannuronic and guluronic groups. These groups indicated the presence of alginate. The adsorption ability test on the MG dye was performed at various changes in contact time and concentration of the adsorbent, while the MG concentration on the adsorption process was examined using the batch system. The results showed that the highest reduction in MG occurred at the contact time of 120 min, 0.06 g/L of adsorbent dosage and 0.0055 g/L of initial MG concentration. Under these conditions the Ca-Alginate could adsorb up to 84.47% of MG. The adsorption kinetic of MG onto Ca-Alginate obeyed the modified pseudo-first-order (MPFO) model.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Zirconium‐based metal‐organic frameworks (Zr‐MOFs) represent an important class of MOFs with high stability and outstanding properties, the green preparation and shaping of which are still challengeable works to hinder their real‐world applications. In this presentation, UiO‐66‐NH2 MOFs were in‐situ grown accompanied by alginate (Alg) hydrogelation under aqueous conditions, achieving UiO‐66‐NH2/Alg composite hydrogels. Relevant characterizations demonstrate the in‐situ generated UiO‐66‐NH2 MOFs were evenly distributed in hydrogel networks by attaching on Alg fiber surfaces. The network structure became denser, but both specific surface area and pore volume were augmented due to the presence of MOFs, which in turn increased active sites to interact with adsorbates. Thus, the adsorption capacity to methylene blue (MB) of composite hydrogels became higher with more dosage of MOF ligand, and the pH sensitivity of Alg adsorption to MB in the pH range of 4 to 10 was eliminated. Furthermore, the study of adsorption kinetics and isotherm reveals MB adsorption on the obtained hydrogels belong to rate controlling chemisorption mechanism. In summary, this manuscript presents a facile approach to realizing the green synthesis and shaping of Zr‐MOFs by one‐step compositing of UiO‐66‐NH2 with Alg‐based hydrogels in aqueous system, achieving MOFs‐based composite hydrogels with enhanced dye adsorption.

Abstract:The adsorptive removal of dyes from industrial wastewater using commercially available adsorbents is not significantly efficient. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer outstanding properties which can boost the separation performance over current commercial adsorbents and hence, these materials represent a milestone in improving treatment methods for dye removal from water. Accordingly, in this paper, the recent studies in the modification of MOF structures in dye removal from the aquatic environment have been discussed. This study aims to elaborate on the synthetic strategies applied to improve the adsorption efficiency and to discuss the major adsorption mechanisms as well as the most influential parameters in the adsorptive removal of dyes using MOFs. More particularly, the advanced separation performance of MOF-based adsorbents will be comprehensively explained. The introduction of various functional groups and nanomaterials, such as amine functional groups, magnetic nanoparticles, and carbon-based materials such as graphene oxide and CNT, onto the MOFs can alter the removal efficiency of MOF-based adsorbents through enhancing the water stability, dispersion in water, interactions between the MOF structure and the contaminant, and the adsorption capacity. Finally, we summarize the challenges experienced by MOF-based materials for dye removal from water and propose future research outlooks to be considered.
