Abstract:Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is an innovative bio-electrochemical approach which converts biochemical energy inherent in wastewater into electrical energy, thus contributing to circular economy. Five electrogenic bacteria, Kocuria rosea (GTPAS76), two strains of Bacillus circulans (GTPO28 and GTPAS54), and two strains of Corynebacterium vitaeruminis (GTPO38 and GTPO42) were isolated from a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) and were used individually as well as in consortium form to run double chambered "H" type microbial fuel cell. Individually they could produce voltage in the range of 0.4-0.7 V in the MFC systems. Consortium developed using GTPO28, GTPO38, GTPAS54 and GTPAS76 were capable of producing voltage output of 0.8 V with 81.81 % and 64 % COD and BOD reduction, respectively. The EPS production capacity and electricity generation by the isolated bacteria correlated significantly (r = 0.72). Various parameters like, effect of preformed biofilm, length of salt bridge and its reuse, aeration, substrate concentration and external resistance were studied in detail. The study emphasizes on improving the commercialization aspect of MFC with repeated use of salt bridge and improving wastewater treatment potential after optimization of MFC system. Polarization curve and power density trends were studied in optimized MFC. A maximum power density and current density achieved were 18.15 mW/m2 and 370.37 mA/m2, respectively using 5 mM sodium benzoate. This study reports the use of sodium benzoate as a substrate along with reusing of the salt bridge in MFC study with promising results for BOD and COD reduction, proving it to be futuristic technology for bio-based circular ecosystem development.
Bioelectricity Generation From Synthetic Wastewater Treatment in a Membrane-Less Microbial Fuel Cell Using Methylene Blue and/or Neutral Red as Mediators

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a new method for treating wastewaters and simultaneously producing electricity (renewable energy (bioelectricity)) as innovative technologies. Feasibility of using synthetic wastewater as a substrate for electricity generation using anaerobic sludge as a source of microorganisms was investigated after a short acclimatization period of less than 10 days. among two different kind substrate (methanol and acetic acid) Significant reduction in COD of synthetic wastewater by 63% and 75% was observed at initial COD=2743 mg/l and 2560 mg/l respectively in Methanol and Acetic Acid indicated effective wastewater treatment in batch experiments. The present article deals with the studies of a two chambered salt bridge (membrane-less) MFC anode chamber [(with mediator; plain graphite electrode; acidified by ortho-posphoric acid (pH≈6)]; cathode chamber (50mM potassium ferricyanide [K3Fe(CN)6] in phosphate buffer; pH ≈7.5; plain graphite electrode) in the presence of mediators. The effect of Methylene Blue (MB) and Neutral Red (NR) as electron mediators and microelements inoculated to anolyte chamber on the power generation in MFCs are reported. The best performance was obtained in the case of Acetic Acid. Using methylene blue (MB) (0.2mM) as the electron mediator, the maximum power density and current density of 61.718 mW/m2 and 92.530 mA/m2 were obtained respectively with CE of 3.94%, which are found to be very promising. The maximum power density and current density of 58.820 mW/m2 and 89.940 mA/m2 were obtained respectively with CE of 8.05%. In the most cases, results show that MB has more effective role than NR. Efforts are being made to improve the performance and reduce the construction and operating costs of MFCs.
Performance of a Dual-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell Inoculated with Active Soil Microbes for Bioelectricity Generation

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems are promising technologies that pose as an efficient alternative renewable energy source. This study evaluated the performance of MFCs inoculated with active soil microorganisms and fed with crab meat processing wastewater, using different proton exchange membranes and different electrode materials, in the production of bioelectricity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. MFC’s performance were analysed in terms of power density, energy output and COD reduction. COD concentrations were measured using standard Hach® COD kit Method 8000 with high range mercury vials. MFC reactors using titanium mesh wire electrodes demonstrated high open circuit potential (OCP) with peak values of 967 mV and 960 mV for MFC with Nafion membrane (MFC-Nafion) and MFC with gelatinised tapioca starch (MFC-GTS), respectively. Average power density output in closed circuit conditions peaked to as high as 9,908.52 mW/m3 for MFC-GTS reactor using carbon fiber brush electrodes. Energy plotted peaked at 235.88 J for MFC-GTS as a function of time calculated from geometric areal power density. COD reduction in MFC-GTS reactor was 31.05% and 36.06% using titanium wire mesh and carbon fiber brush electrodes, respectively. These results revealed that MFCs inoculated with active soil microbes using organic GTS membrane is a promising technology for bioenergy generation and COD reduction.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCS) is a promising and expanding technology able to eliminate various pollutants of wastewater while converting its chemical energy into power energy using biocatalysts. The potential application of double-chamber microbial fuel cell (DC-MFC) for chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and generated power from wastewater in the different conditions is investigated. DC-MFC is operated with anaerobic sludge as an active biocatalyst in an anode section, an aerobic cathode section and a Nafion117 membrane as a separator. The performance of the bioreactor is determined with different concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) loadings in the MFC process, in terms of COD removal, power generation and columbic efficiencies. The results illustrated that COD removal efficiency increased at the high concentrations of organic matter. So that at COD concentration of 2000.0 mg/L the highest COD removal efficiency (84%) was obtained. But with increasing substrate initial concentration to 10000.0 mg/L the efficiency decreased to 79%. The important outputs of the system like the highest voltage, maximum generated power, current density, and energy efficiency with the 100,000 mg/L COD are 447 mV, 50.7 mW/m2, 570.0 mA/m2, and 18.6%, respectively. The optical density levels increased due to bacterial growth while pH severely decreased in the anode chamber when using high-concentration substrates in the MFC.

Abstract:The electricity production performance of two microbial fuel cells(MFC),which were inoculated with mashed anaerobic sludge supernatant and municipal wastewater respectively,was investigated.The MFC inoculated with mashed anaerobic sludge supernatant could produce electricity very well.The highest voltage reached 433 mV,and the power density was(117.5 mW·m~(-2)) when municipal wastewater taken from BWTP was used as the substrate solutions.The MFC inoculated directly with municipal wastewater could not produce electricity well without salt and nutrient solution.After dosed with the salt and nutrient solution,the performance of MFC was improved obviously.The highest voltage could reach 228.2 mV,and the highest power density was 35.2 mW·m~(-2).And the COD removal efficiencies for both inoculated MFCs were not very high when municipal wastewaters were used as the substrate solution.The maximum COD removal efficiency was only 39.7%,and the maximum Coulombic efficiency was 60.6%.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a method that is both effective and environmentally friendly for producing renewable electricity. Several studies have shown that one of the major challenges is the generation of electrons as a result of poor exploitation of organic substrates. One of the most talked about issues in modern molecular fusion is the reutilization of biological organic waste in an MFC. In this article, the effective utilization of domestic organic waste as an organic supply for bacterial species to generate energy was highlighted. The findings that were obtained corresponded to the one-of-a-kind MFC operation in which a voltage of 110 mV was generated in a time span of 12 days during operation with an external resistance of 500 ῼ. With an internal resistance of 117 ῼ, the maximum power density and the current density were recorded 0.1047 mW/m2 and 21.84 mA/m2, respectively. According to the results of the biological study, strains of bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter schindleri, and Pseudomonas nitroreducens are the ones responsible for producing energy. In addition, final remarks with proposals for the future have been enclosed.

Abstract:Photosynthetic microbial fuel cell (PMFC) is a novel technology, which employs organic pollutants and organisms to produce electrons and biomass and capture CO2 by bio-reactions. In this study, a new PMFC was developed based on Synechococcus sp. as a biocathode, and dairy wastewater was used in the anode chamber. Different experiments including batch feed mode, semi-continuous feed mode, Synechococcus feedstock to the anode chamber, Synechococcus-Chlorella mixed system, the feedstock of treated wastewater to the cathode chamber, and use of extra nutrients in the anodic chamber were performed to investigate the behavior of the PMFC system. The results indicated that the PMFC with a semi-continuous feed mode is more effective than a batch mode for electricity generation and pollutant removal. Herein, maximum power density, chemical oxygen demand removal, and Coulombic efficiency were 6.95 mW/m2 (450 Ω internal resistance), 62.94, and 43.16%, respectively, through mixing Synechococcus sp. and Chlorella algae in the batch-fed mode. The maximum nitrate and orthophosphate removal rates were 98.83 and 68.5%, respectively, wherein treated wastewater in the anode was added to the cathode. No significant difference in Synechococcus growth rate was found between the cathodic chamber of PMFC and the control cultivation cell. The heating value of the biocathode biomass at maximum Synechococcus growth rate (adding glucose into the anode chamber) was 0.2235 MJ/Kg, indicating the cell's high ability for carbon dioxide recovery. This study investigated not only simultaneous bioelectricity production and dairy wastewater in a new PMFC using Synechococcus sp. but also studied several operational parameters and presented useful information about their effect on PMFC performance.

Abstract:Summary In recent decades, shortage and crisis of energy being a serious issue of concern all over the world as the fossil fuel reserves have been diminishing. A particular emphasis has been given for bio‐energy harvesting from waste and cellulosic biomass by employing an efficient conversion system. Among these, microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems are an emerging promising technology for the effective wastewater treatment. However, the collective effect of waste substrates, inoculum composition, and catholyte concentrations on the performance of MFC system remains unclear. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the effect of electron acceptors under different set of parameters in response to its electrochemical performance inoculum chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentration and type of the electron acceptor on the performance of the electrochemical has been studied. A dual‐chamber MFC with 0.4 to 0.6 M values of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) and Ferricyanide K3[Fe(CN)6], (900‐2520 mgL−1) of COD values, and oxygen as a control substance were used. The experiments were carried out in a batch mode for 20 days of operation. The results reveal that MFC with 0.4 M KMnO4 provides an external output voltage of 310.09 ± 0.06 mV and external output power density value of 400.4 ± 0.46 mWm−2 while 0.4 M K3[Fe(CN)6] results an external output voltage of 252.18 ± 0.12 mV and an external output power density value of 380.28 ± 0.24 mWm−2. Analysis of variance was done using central composite design approach to support the significance of each experimental factors on the responses and the result shows that the confidence interval of 95% for all the parameters that were statistically significant.

Abstract:Abstract Electricity constitutes one of the basic energies of our everyday life and approximately 14 % of the global population does not have the access to electricity. An abundance of waste is generated daily wherein food waste constitutes 45 % of the composition. A mediator-less and membrane-less single-chambered microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) has the potential to serve as a cost-effective solution for food waste treatment and electricity power generation at no additional cost for the substrate. Food waste from E-Idaman Sdn. Bhd. Kedah was utilised in this study to generate electrical energy while focusing on the effect of different yeast extract concentrations on the performance of the ML-MFC. Electrogenic bacterial (EB) culture employed in this study acted as a catalyst for the power generation and was isolated from a previous ML-MFC study. The proximate analysis of food waste observed carbon constituting the greatest composition at 30.02 %. From the conducted preliminary study which compared three different strains of EB to be introduced in the ML-MFC, Bacillus subtillis sp . exhibited the highest specific growth rate, μ , (0.117 g. L −1 /h) and shortest doubling time, Td , (5.93 h). One-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) method was utilised to evaluate the performance of the ML-MFC. 15 g/L yeast extract concentration obtained the greatest power density (628.05 × 10 6 mW/m 2 ), substrate degradation efficiency (12.3 %), COD removal (99 mg/L) and biomass (44.32 mg/L). This showcased that the addition of extra yeast extract concentration into the food waste had boosted the efficiency of EB’s growth resulting in greater consumption of carbon source (removed COD value; bioremediation) in the food waste.

Abstract:SummaryThe present study investigated the potential of different concentrations of molasses wastewater to produce bioelectricity, reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and functionally active microbial community in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Five different MFC setups were compared in which three were fed with molasses (two at room and one at 35°C temperature), while fourth and fifth were used as control reactors fed with distilled water and acetate, respectively. During first, second and third phases of the experiment; 1, 3 and 5 g L−1 molasses in distilled water were used as 500, 1000 and 1500 mg L−1 COD loading rate, respectively. Analysis of different parameters including pH, total dissolved solids (TDS) and electrical conductivity performed after 3 days interval due to 3 days hydraulic retention time, while COD, current, the voltage after 24 hours interval. The maximum voltage (1011 mV) and current (0.91 mA) were produced in MCF‐3 when 5 g L−1 of molasses was used, while maximum power density 1570.68 mW L−1 was produced by MFC‐1. The highest COD removal (95%) was found in MFC‐3 at 500 mg L−1 influent COD, comparable with control MFC‐5 with acetate which exhibited 97% COD removal at the same loading rate of acetate. High throughput DNA sequencing showed Clostridium sensu stricto abundance was higher among all other genera in all MFCs, ranges between 11 and 17 in MFCs with molasses, 18.3 in MFC with acetate and a lower value of 5.8 in control MFC without molasses. Romboutsia found higher in MFCs with molasses and acetate, might be responsible for higher electricity generation in these MFCs. Higher Shannon diversity and low abundance were found in MFC4 with distilled water while low diversity with higher abundance due to enrichment of certain genera under specific substrates was found in MFC 2 and 5 fed with molasses and acetate, respectively. It was concluded that MFC with molasses concentration 5 g L−1 showed more efficient power generation as compared to acetate, hence can be used to generate electricity while COD removal efficiency was almost the same with molasses and acetate.

Abstract:The world is facing a crisis of insufficient energy to support human life, as the world's energy demand overgrows in parallel with the world's population rate and will continue to increase in the future. The usage of the microbial fuel cell (MFC) as a renewable energy tool is a collective solution to this crisis. This project aims to find a new renewable source of energy as well as to prove and demonstrate the generation of electricity from food waste using MFC. Several manipulated variables were selected to test the maximum power density produced using double chamber MFC such as the different type of food waste, the different pH value for the food waste, the different sizes of the electrode, and the different electrode positioning in the chamber. The experimental results indicate that the best performance of MFC can be attained using fruits that quickly release sugar with a more acidic pH level. The MFC should be prepared using small size electrodes with spaces that were arranged in a vertical position. Therefore, it is proved that energy can be harvest from food waste by using MFC.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is an emerging technology which has been immensely investigated for wastewater treatment along with electricity generation. In the present study, the treatment efficiency of MFC was investigated for hydrocarbon containing wastewater by optimizing various parameters of MFC. Mediator-less MFC (1·2 l) was constructed, and its performance was compared with mediated MFC with Escherichia coli as a biocatalyst. MFC with electrode having biofilm proved to be better compared with MFC inoculated with suspended cells. Analysis of increasing surface area of electrode by increasing their numbers indicated increase in COD reduction from 55 to 75%. Catholyte volume was optimized to be 750 ml. Sodium benzoate (0·721 g l-1 ) and actual common effluent treatment plant (CETP) wastewater as anolyte produced 0·8 and 0·6 V voltage and 89 and 50% COD reduction, respectively, when a novel consortium of four bacterial strains were used. Twenty MFC systems with the developed consortium when electrically connected in series-parallel connection were able to generate 2·3 V and 0·5 mA current. This is the first report demonstrating the application of CETP wastewater in the MFC system, which shows potential of the system towards degradation of complex organic components present in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are devices that use microorganisms to produce electricity from organic matter. In this study, the bacterium Delftia acidovorans spp was used to evaluate energy generation in a single-chamber MFC. In this evaluation, six MFCs were assembled with different exchange membranes: two with carbon fiber composite membrane, two with maghemite membrane and two with heat-treated maghemite. Synthetic maghemite was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements. Bioelectricity monitoring in the MFCs was conducted for 15 days, with data collected every 60 seconds. The cell that achieved the highest bioelectricity production was the one with heat-treated maghemite, reaching a production of 286.50mV. It used 100% leachate from fruit and vegetable waste as a substrate, starting with values of 365 mg/L of N-NH 4 , 96000 mg/L of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD 5) , 101500 mg/L of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and a pH of 4.11. In the results, the carbon fiber treatment had a higher removal efficiency percentage of up to 63.38% for BOD 5 and 69.67% for COD. For ammonium nitrogen removal, all cells showed good removal efficiency of up to 92.49%. The pH value increased in all treatments due to the degradation of organic matter, reaching a value of up to 5.96. Thus, the efficiency of Delftia acidovorans spp . and carbon fiber are a good alternative as an exchange membrane in purifying leachate contaminants within an MFC.
A cooperative microbial fuel cell system for waste treatment and energy recovery

Abstract:A cooperative microbial fuel cell (MFC) system was developed and investigated for its performance in waste treatment and bioenergy production. The system consisted of a conventional MFC and a dual-cathode MFC that was specially designed for nitrogen removal. Three feeding solutions, including a synthetic solution (acetate as an organic source), digested sludge and landfill leachate, were used as substrates. The MFC system removed more than 99% of chemical oxygen demand (COD) from the synthetic solution, and the organic removal mainly occurred in the anodes of the MFCs. Nitrogen, on the other hand, was removed in the cathodes of the MFC system, which achieved more than 98% removal of ammonium and 96% removal of total nitrogen. The MFC system also effectively treated the actual wastes and removed more than 85% of the total COD and 50-70% of the total nitrogen from the digested sludge and landfill leachate. The organic removal rates with the actual wastes were significantly higher than in other MFC systems. In general, the MFC system consumed less than 0.06 kWh/m3 or 0.1 kWh/kg COD, demonstrating that low energy consumption is a major advantage of MFC technology. The MFC system produced 0.1023 kWh/kg COD from the synthetic solution, much higher than the 0.0097 kWh/kg COD and 0.0019 kWh/kg COD from the actual wastes, resulting in a theoretically positive energy balance with the synthetic solution; however, the net energy with the actual wastes was negative.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising technology to generate bioelectricity from biomass feedstocks at mild operating temperature and pressure conditions. Despite promising progress in MFC systems, their commercialization has been a major challenge, mainly due to the high cost of components, limited power generation, and lower efficiency. Thus, developing economically viable and environmentally benign electrode and membrane materials that would substantially reduce the manufacturing cost and boost the performance of MFC systems is crucial. Hence, this review aims to highlight the opportunities of using abundantly available waste biomass resources to address the challenges of economic viability and low power productivity of MFC systems. In this stride, the potential of utilization of biomass waste as membrane constituents, electrode materials, and feedstock sources that would enable large-scale commercialization of MFC systems is discussed. Moreover, the study also reviews recent advances in systematic power management and optimization techniques to boost the overall power productivity and efficiency of MFC systems. Based on the comprehensive review made, it is observed that converting biomass waste resources to biochar or activated carbon for direct application as an electrode or electrode coating can decrease its cost by up to 90%. Furthermore, waste biomass-derived biochar can significantly lower the manufacturing costs of the membrane by up to 39 times. The optimum power management configurations are also proposed based on the analysis of the key factors, including the ability to boost low or ultra-low input voltage, the amount of output voltage, and the charging rate. The challenges and limitations of using waste biomass resources in MFC systems are outlined to enlighten future research directions in this domain.
Energy Production in Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) during the Biological Treatment of Wastewater from Soilless Plant Cultivation

Abstract:The management of drainage water (DW), which is produced during the soilless cultivation of plants, requires a high energy input. At the same time, DW is characterized by a high electrolytic conductivity, a high redox potential, and is also stable and putrefaction-free. In the present study, the natural properties of drainage water and a biotreatment method employing an external organic substrate in the form of citric acid (C/N 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) were utilized for energy recovery by a microbial fuel cell (MFC). The cathode chamber served as a retention tank for DW with a carbon felt electrode fixed inside. In turn, a biological reactor with biomass attached to the filling in the form of carbon felt served as the anode chamber. The filling also played the role of an electrode. The chambers were combined by an ion exchange membrane, forming an H letter-shaped system. They were then connected in an external electrical circuit with a resistance of 1k Ω. The use of a flow-through system eliminated steps involving aeration and mixing of the chambers' contents. Citric acid was found to be an efficient organic substrate. The voltage of the electric current increased from 44.34 ± 60.92 mV to 566.06 ± 2.47 mV for the organic substrate dose expressed by the C/N ratio ranging from 1.0 to 2.0. At the same time, the denitrification efficiency ranged from 51.47 ± 9.84 to 95.60 ± 1.99% and that of dephosphatation from 88.97 ± 2.41 to 90.48 ± 1.99% at C/N from 1.0 to 2.0. The conducted studies confirmed the possibility of recovering energy during the biological purification of drainage water in a biofilm reactor. The adopted solution only required the connection of electrodes and tanks with an ion-selective membrane. Further research should aim to biologically treat DW followed by identification of the feasibility of energy recovery by means of MFC.

[Electricity generation performance of two-chamber microbial full cell in the treatment of simulated wastewater]

Abstract:The start-up procedures, the degradation efficiency of organics at the anode and the removal efficiency of Cu2+ at the cathode of the cell were studied, based on which the performance of MFC (microbial fuel cell) in electricity generation and wastewater treatment was evaluated. A simple two-chamber microbial fuel cell was established with simulated molasses wastewater as substrate at the anode and simulated electroplating wastewater as an electron acceptor at the cathode. The results from a batch of experiments showed that the highest voltage output of 417.00 mV was obtained at an external resistance of 800 Omega, and that the maximum power density of 44.17 mW x m(-2) was obtained with an internal resistance of 293 Omega based on the polarization curve. In addition, COD removal rate reached its highest value (47.31%) in the fifth cycle, and the maximum removal rate (59.76%) for Cu2+ was recorded in the fourth cycle. In summary, the application of MFC in the treatment of organic wastewater and electroplating wastewater is feasible.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a budding technology for organic waste treatment with simultaneous bioelectricity generation. The present investigation explores the potential of pretreated sweet lime peel slurry as an anolyte with yeast and bacteria anode biocatalyst for bioenergy generation in MFCs. Sterilised cow urine was used as catholyte and Chlorella pyrenoidosa strain as cathode biocatalyst. Three H-shaped dual-chamber MFCs were fabricated using two plastic containers operating with no inoculum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae as only inoculum and co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae with isolated cellulolytic bacteria, respectively, in the anode chamber. The anode was prepared using a rectangular stainless-steel mesh; the cathode was a cylindrical graphite rod. The maximum open-circuit voltages achieved by co-culture of bacteria and S. cerevisiae were 792.33 ± 1.53 mV and 481.33 ± 3.51 mV, respectively. The maximum power densities in these two MFCs were found to be 22.20 ± 1.28 mW/m 2 (210.66 ± 6.11 mA/m 2 ) and 204.80 ± 1.28 mW/m 2 (640.0 ± 2.0 mA/m 2 ) correspondingly. Results noticeably disclosed that microorganisms consumed the carbon source available in sweet lime peel. Thus, the sweet lime peel can be an inexpensive alternative for operating MFCs.
