Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnOx) mediated ammonium (NH4+) oxidation in wetlands is receiving increased interest; however, the biochemical mechanisms of this process are vague due to only few studies have focused on terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, three subsurface flow constructed wetlands (CWs), high/low content of Mn-sand CW (HMn-CW/LMn-CW) and quartz sand CW (C-CWs), were set up to explore the extent of ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) removal and underlying mechanisms. According to the surface characteristics of Mn-sand, MnOx nanospheres were loaded as birnessite on the sand, while changes of the Mn/N contents indicated involvement of Mn-sand in NH4+-N removal. During the 120-day operation, higher extent of NH4+-N removal with decreased nitrous oxide (N2O) emission was achieved in the HMn-CW (76%) than in the LMn-CW (73%) and C-CW (67%). According to the distribution of nitrogen compounds and Mn2+, Mn-sand in the HMn-CW delayed oxidation of NH4+ and production of nitrate and nitrite. High abundance of Zooloea and Psychrobacter was observed in the Mn-sand layer of HMn-CW, corresponding to a higher observed NH4+-N removal. NH4+ oxidation to hydroxylamine and then to nitrite was enhanced in HMn-CW due to ammonia monooxygenase genes being promoted. The decrease of N2O emission was closely related to the genus TM7a, verified by Pearson correlation analysis. Our findings expand the knowledge of MnOx-mediated NH4+ oxidation in wetlands and support the potential application of manganese oxide for effective nitrogen removal in CWs.

Manganese oxides in Phragmites rhizosphere accelerates ammonia oxidation in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Phragmites reeds are widely used in constructed wetlands (CWs) for treating wastewater. The enrichment of microorganisms and Fe/Mn plaque in Phragmites rhizospheres largely contributes to pollutant removal. However, their interactions and potential synergistic roles in water purification are poorly understood. To address the issue, we first compared the microbial community traits in the Phragmites rhizosphere and adjacent bulk soil in six long-term operated CWs. Results showed that enriched microbes and functional genes in the Phragmites rhizosphere were largely involved in Mn oxidation, resulting in a two to three times enrichment of Mn oxides in the rhizosphere. In turn, the enriched Mn oxides played significant roles in driving microbial community composition and function. To further understand the biological manganese oxidation in the rhizosphere, we identified Mn-oxidizing bacteria using genome-centric analysis and found that 92% of identified Mn-oxidizing bacteria potentially participated in nitrogen cycling. We then conducted relationships between Mn-oxidizing genes and different nitrogen cycling genes and found Mn-oxidizing gene abundance was significantly correlated with ammonia oxidation gene amoA (R = 0.65). Remarkably, complete ammonia oxidation (comammox) Nitrospira, accounting for 39.11% of ammonia oxidizers, also positively correlated with Mn-oxidizing microbes. Based on the above observations, we inferred that the use of Mn oxides as a substrate in CWs may enhance ammonia oxidation. To apply this to actual engineering, we explored treatment performance in a pilot-scale Mn-amending CW. As expected, ammonia removal capacity improved by 23.34%, on average, in the Mn-amending CW. In addition, the abundance of amoA genes increased significantly in the Mn-amending CW, indicating improved biological processes rather than chemical reactions.
Plant-microbe involvement: How manganese achieves harmonious nitrogen-removal and carbon-reduction in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Carbon deficits in inflow frequently lead to inefficient nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands (CWs) treating tailwater. Solid carbon sources, commonly employed to enhance denitrification in CWs, increase carbon emissions. In this study, MnO 2 was incorporated into polycaprolactone substrates within CWs, significantly enhancing NH 4 + -N and NO 3 – -N removal efficiencies by 48.26–59.78 % and 96.84–137.23 %, respectively. These improvements were attributed to enriched nitrogen-removal-related enzymes and increased plant absorption. Under high nitrogen loads (9.55 ± 0.34 g/m 3 /d), emissions of greenhouse gases (CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O) decreased by 147.23–202.51 %, 14.53–86.76 %, and 63.36–87.36 %, respectively. N 2 O emissions were reduced through bolstered microbial nitrogen removal pathways by polycaprolactone and MnO 2 . CH 4 accumulation was mitigated by the increased methanotrophs and dampened methanogenesis, modulated by manganese. Additionally, manganese-induced increases in photosynthetic pigment contents (21.28–64.65 %) fostered CO 2 sequestration through plant photosynthesis. This research provides innovative perspectives on enhancing nitrogen removal and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in constructed wetlands with polymeric substrates.

Abstract:Insufficient provision of electron donors for denitrification often hinders nitrogen removal performance. While using a combination of iron and carbon can mitigate this problem, the surface passivation and limited electrical potential difference between Fe and C electrodes restricted the electron transfer efficiency. In this study, a manganese‑carbon carrier (Mn-C) was prepared and used for micro-electrolysis (Mn-C-ME) in conjunction with biological denitrification. Four constructed wetlands (CWs), including three Mn-amended CWs filled with low/middle/high content of Mn-C and one control, were established to investigate nutrient removal performance and underlying mechanisms under low C/N conditions. The results showed that Mn-amended CWs significantly enhanced total nitrogen removal from 31.01% to an optimal 91.06%. Nitrate was directly reduced by Mn(0), while Mn-C-ME generated inorganic electron donors ([H]/H2 and Mn2+) in situ for denitrification. The use of Mn ores oxidized ammonium and immobilized residual Mn2+ produced by Mn-C-ME. High-efficiency total phosphorus removal confirmed the formation of Mn-P precipitation. Moreover, the addition of Mn-C and Mn ores resulted in a noticeable difference in microbial community structures. Autotrophic denitrifying bacteria were abundant and positively correlated with Mn-oxidizing bacteria (MnOB) suggesting Mn(II)-driven autotrophic denitrification occurred. The high proportions of proteins, along with the detection of Mn2+ in extracellular polymeric substances, indicated biofilms might regulate the release of Mn2+ and supply a medium for Mn cycling, thus improving electron utilization. Our findings provide a new strategy to enhance nitrogen removal by coupling with multiple Mn-containing substrates.

Influence of application of manganese ore in constructed wetlands on the mechanisms and improvement of nitrogen and phosphorus removal

Abstract:Vertical up-flow constructed wetlands (CWs) with manganese ore (Mn ore) as media (M-CWs) were developed to treat simulated polluted river water. The results showed that the average removal efficiencies for NH4-N, NO3-N, TN and TP were 91.74%, 83.29%, 87.47% and 65.12% in M-CWs, respectively, which were only 79.12%, 72.90%, 75.85% and 43.23% in the CWs without Mn ore (C-CWs). Nutrient mass balance showed that nitrogen (N) removal was improved by enhanced microbial processes, media storage and plant uptake in M-CWs. Moreover, almost 50% of phosphorus (P) was retained by media storage because of the adsorption processes on Mn ore. It was found that addition of Mn ore enhanced denitrification as the relative abundance of denitrifying bacteria increased. The produced Mn(II) and more abundant Gammaproteobacteria confirmed alternative N removal pathways including anoxic nitrification coupled to Mn ore reduction and denitrification using Mn(II) as electron donor. Mn(II) concentration in the effluent of M-CWs was below the drinking water limit of 0.1 mg/L, which makes them environmentally-friendly.
Simultaneous enhanced ammonia and nitrate removal from secondary effluent in constructed wetlands using a new manganese-containing substrate

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used to treat secondary effluent. However, simultaneously removing ammonia (NH 4 + -N) and nitrate (NO 3 − –N) is challenging because of insufficient oxygen and carbon sources. In this study, a novel composite material (MPCM) comprising MnO 2 and polycaprolactone was developed as a substrate for CWs to enhance the synchronous removal of NH 4 + –N and NO 3 − –N. The CWs with a higher MPCM content (H-CW), lower MPCM content (L-CW), and controlled CW (C-CW) exhibited average NH 4 + –N removal efficiencies of 75.69%, 70.49%, and 52.40%, respectively. The 15 N isotope tracking technique showed that NH 4 + –N removal was attributed to anaerobic ammonia oxidation mediated by MnO 2 reduction (Mnammox), which accounted for 17.16%–27.24% of the NH 4 + –N removal in the composite material layers (0–20 cm) of the H-CW and L-CW. The richness of ammonia oxidizers in the upper layers (40–50 cm) of the H-CW and L-CW further facilitated NH 4 + –N removal. Moreover, the average total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of the H-CW and L-CW were 1.99 and 1.59 times that of C-CW, respectively, owing to enhanced denitrification by MPCM. Furthermore, N 2 O emissions were reduced by 81.31% and 70.83% in the H-CW and L-CW, respectively. This study provides an effective approach for improving nitrogen removal and reducing N 2 O emissions during the treatment of secondary effluent by CWs.

Abstract:The urgent need to address the severe issue of nitrogen pollution has prompted the search for a functional and easy recycling material. In this study, manganese oxides (MnO x ) were loaded on activated carbon (AC), resulting in a composite known as AC-MnO x , for efficient ammonium removal from aqueous solutions. The results indicated a remarkable 15.6-fold increase in ammonium removal efficiency and a fivefold enhancement in removal capacity for AC-MnO x (3.20 mg/g) compared to AC. Under specific conditions (initial NH 4 + -N concentration of 15 mg/L, adsorbent dose of 2.5 g, pH of 6.5, and temperature of 35 °C), the highest achieved ammonium removal efficiency reached 94.6%. Furthermore, the study distinguishes the contributions of catalytic oxidation and adsorption in the removal process. The adsorption process was effectively modeled using pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Interestingly, the amount of oxidation conversion ( N tur ) exhibited a linear relationship with the dosage when the initial ammonium concentration was sufficiently high, while the relationship between initial ammonium concentration and the ratio of N tur to adsorption capacity ( N sur ) followed a negative exponential trend. The removal mechanisms involved electrostatic interaction between ammonium and the negatively charged dehydrogenated hydroxyl groups (− OH sur ) or cation tunnel in crystal structures of MnO x , ion exchange adsorption, and the oxidation impact of MnO x . This research provides valuable insights into the application of immobilized MnO x media for ammonium removal. Moreover, filling AC-MnO x into constructed wetlands (CW) proved to be an effective method for reducing ammonium pollution, demonstrating its potential in the field of engineering wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Manganese(IV) (Mn(IV)) reduction coupled to anaerobic ammonium (NH4+-N) oxidation (Mnammox) is a recently identified metal oxide-mediated nitrogen (N) loss pathway, holding potential value for the efficient removal of NH4+-N from wastewater. However, little is known about the application of Mnammox in wastewater treatment. Here, a novel Mnammox bacterium Aromatoleum evansii (strain MAY27) was screened. Strain MAY27 can utilize MnO2 as an electron acceptor to achieve NH4+-N removal under a low C/N condition (C/N = 0.5). The influencing factors in the Mnammox process and the Mn(IV) reduction driving effect on NH4+-N oxidation were investigated. The physiological characteristics of strain MAY27 and differential metabolic pathways were identified through whole-genome sequencing and metabolomic analyses. A significant up-regulation of several key pathways upon the addition of MnO2, including glycolysis/gluconeogenesis, transmembrane transporter activity, and oxidoreductase activity. This study contributes to the advancement of biotechnological approaches for treating N-containing wastewater.
Enhancement of Micropollutant Biotransformation by Adding Manganese Sand in Constructed Wetlands

Abstract:Recent investigations have shown that the addition of manganese (Mn) sand to constructed wetlands (i.e., Mn-amended CWs) can improve the performance of organic micropollutants (MPs) removal. In addition to the direct oxidation and adsorption of Mn oxides, the indirect role of Mn oxides in MP biotransformation is crucial to the removal of MPs but has seldom been referred to. Herein, we constructed lab-scale CWs with or without the addition of natural Mn sand (∼35% Mn oxides) to decipher the influence of Mn oxides on the biotransformation of the six selected MPs which commonly existed in the wastewater. The experimental results showed that the addition of Mn sand to CWs can improve the removal of MPs (8.48% atrazine, 13.16% atenolol, and 6.27% sulfamethoxazole [pairwise Wilcoxon test p < 0.05]). Combining the detection of transformation products and metagenomic sequencing, we found that the enhanced removal of atrazine in the Mn-amended CWs was mainly due to the bioaugmented hydroxylation process. The enrichment of biotransformation-related genes and associated microbes of atenolol and sulfamethoxazole in Mn-amended CWs indicated that the addition of Mn sand to CWs can strengthen the biotransformation of MPs. Furthermore, we found that these MP-biodegrading microbes were widely present in the full-scale CWs. Overall, our research provides fundamental information and insights for further application of Mn-amended CWs in MP removal.
Hematite-facilitated microbial ammoxidation for enhanced nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely applied for decentralized wastewater treatment. However, achieving efficient removal of ammonia ( ) has proven challenging due to insufficient oxygen. In this study, natural hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) was employed as a CW substrate (H-CWs) for the first time to drive anaerobic ammonia oxidation coupled with iron(III) reduction (Feammox). Compared to gravel constructed wetlands (G-CWs), ammonia removal was enhanced by 38.14% to 54.03% and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions were reduced by 34.60% in H-CWs. The synergistic removal of ammonia and nitrate by H-CWs also resulted in the absence of ammoxidation by-products. Inhibitor and 15 N isotope tracer incubations showed that Feammox accounting for approximately 40% of all ammonia removal in the H-CWs. The enrichment of iron phosphate (Fe 3 Fe 4 (PO 4 ) 6 ) promoted the accumulation of the Feammox intermediate compound FeOOH. Microbial nanowires were observed on the surface of H-CW substrates as well, suggesting that the observed biological ammoxidation was most likely related to extracellular electron transfer (EET). Microbial and metagenomics analysis revealed that H-CWs elevated the integrity and enhanced the abundance of functional microorganisms and genes associated with nitrogen metabolism. Overall, the efficient ammonia removal in the absence of O 2 together with a reduction in N 2 O emissions as described in this study may provide useful guidance for hematite-mediated anaerobic ammonia removal in CWs.

The role and related microbial processes of Mn-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation in reducing methane emissions from constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell

Abstract:Anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) plays an important role in global carbon cycle and greenhouse gas emission reduction. In this study, an effective green technology to reduce methane emissions was proposed by introducing Mn-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (Mn-AOM) and microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology into constructed wetland (CW). The results indicate that the combination of biological methods and bioelectrochemical methods can more effectively control the methane emission from CW than the reported methods. The role of dissimilated metal reduction in methane control in CW and the biochemical process associated with Mn-AOM were also investigated. The results demonstrated that using Mn ore as the matrix and operating MFC effectively reduced methane emissions from CW, and higher COD removal rate was obtained in CW-MFC (Mn) during the 200 days of operation. Methane emission from CW-MFC (Mn) (53.76 mg/m2/h) was 55.61% lower than that of CW (121.12 mg/m2/h). The highest COD removal rate (99.85%) in CW-MFC (Mn) was obtained. As the dissimilative metal-reducing microorganisms, Geobacter (5.10%) was found enriched in CW-MFC (Mn). The results also showed that the presence of Mn ore was beneficial to the biodiversity of CW-MFCs and the growth of electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) including Proteobacteria (35.32%), Actinobacteria (2.38%) and Acidobacteria (2.06%), while the growth of hydrogenotrophic methanogens Methanobacterium was effectively inhibited. This study proposed an effective way to reduce methane from CW. It also provided reference for low carbon technology of wastewater treatment.
Characteristic and mechanism of biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal facilitated by biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) at various concentrations of Mn(II)

Abstract:Biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) have attracted considerable attention as active oxidants, adsorbents, and catalysts. However, characteristics and mechanisms of nitrification-denitrification in biological redox reactions mediated by different concentrations of BioMnOx are still unclear. Fate of nutrients (e.g., NH4+-N, TP, NO3--N) and COD were investigated through different concentrations of BioMnOx produced by Mn(II) in the moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). 34% and 89.2%, 37.8% and 89.8%, 57.3% and 88.9%, and 62.1% and 90.4% of TN and COD by MBBR were synchronously removed in four phases, respectively. The result suggested that Mn(II) significantly improved the performance of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) and TP removal based on manganese (Mn) redox cycling. Characteristics of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and electron transfer system activity (ETSA) were discussed, demonstrating that ROS accumulation reduced the ETSA and GSH-Px activities when Mn(II) concentration increased. Extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) function and metabolic pathway of Mn(II) were explored. Furthermore, effect of cellular components on denitrification was evaluated including BioMnOx performances, indicating that Mn(II) promoted the non-enzymatic action of cell fragments. Finally, mechanism of nitrification and denitrification, denitrifying phosphorus and Mn removal was further elucidated through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), high throughput sequencing, and fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR). This results can bringing new vision for controlling nutrient pollution in redox process of Mn(II).

Abstract:Up to date, no great breakthrough has been made in the research of anaerobic ammonium oxidation mediated by Mn(IV)-oxide reduction (termed Mnammox). Recently, the Feammox process has become a hot research topic in the study of nitrogen loss from soils. Interestingly, in this study, an alternative pathway of N loss was proposed in terrestrial ecosystems. Mnammox could produce NO2, NO3, and N-2 as end products. Here, our study demonstrated the occurrence of Mnammox, and direct evidence for Mnammox in agricultural drainage ditch soils with microbial Mn(IV) and Fe(III) reduction was obtained using the (NH4+)-N-15 isotopic tracing technique. The extent and rate of N-30(2) and N-29(2) production and Mn(IV) reduction were enhanced when amended with (NH4+)-N-15 and were further promoted when amended with (NH4+)-N-15+MnO2 . Moreover, although the Fe(III) reduction rate was stimulated with the addition of (NH4+)-N-15, the Fe(III) reduction rate greatly decreased when Mn0 2 was added. Mnammox rates ranged from 0.40 to 0.79 mg N kg(-1) d(-1), and an estimated 6.57-18.25 kg ha(-1) year(-1) N loss was associated with Mnammox in the examined soils. We revealed that the Mnammox reaction may be more efficient than the Feammox reaction, and the Feammox rates found in previous studies may have been overestimated. Overall, for the first time, this work provided key evidence for the existence of Mnammox in terrestrial ecosystems and suggested that Mnammox could be an important pathway for nitrogen loss in agricultural drainage ditch soils. A critical review of Mnammox coupled with the NDMO for innovative nitrogen removal

Abstract:In the context of increasing global nitrogen pollution, traditional biological nitrogen removal technologies like nitrification and denitrification are hindered by high energy consumption. Additionally, the deployment of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) technology is constrained due to the slow growth rate of Anammox bacteria and there is a bottleneck in nitrogen removal efficiency. To overcome these technical bottlenecks, researchers have discovered a revolutionary nitrogen removal technology that cleverly combines the redox cycling of manganese with nitrification and denitrification reactions. In this new process, manganese dependent anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Mnammox) bacteria can convert NH4+ to N2 under anaerobic conditions, while nitrate/nitrite dependent manganese oxidation (NDMO) bacteria use NO3-/NO2- as electron acceptors to oxidize Mn2+ to Mn4+. Mn4+ acts as an electron acceptor in Mnammox reaction, thereby realizing the autotrophic nitrogen removal process. This innovative method not only simplifies the steps of biological denitrification, but also significantly reduces the consumption of oxygen and organic carbon, providing a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution to the problem of nitrogen pollution. The article initially provides a concise overview of prevalent nitrogen removal technologies and the application of manganese in these processes, and discusses the role of manganese in biogeochemical cycles, including its discovery, mechanism of action, microbial communities involved, and its impact on these key factors in the process. Subsequently, metabolic principles, benefits, advantages, and environmental considerations of Mnammox coupled with the NDMO process are analyzed in detail. Finally, this article summarizes the shortcomings of current research and looks forward to future research directions. The goal of this article is to provide a valuable reference for researchers to fully understand the application of manganese in nitrogen removal processes.

Abstract:Iron ore and manganese ore were used as substrate of constructed wetlands (CWs) to enhance nitrogen (N) removal. However, the N purification performance in CWs filled with iron or manganese ore under antibiotics stress needs further study. In this study, three groups of CWs filled with river sand, limonite (a kind of iron ore), and manganese ore sand were constructed, which were named as C-CWs, Fe-CWs, and Mn-CWs, respectively. The effect and mechanism of the composite antibiotics sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) on N removal in CWs were investigated. While the addition of SMX and TMP inhibited about 40% nitrification and promoted about 25% denitrification in all CWs, Fe-CWs and Mn-CWs always had better N removal performance than C-CWs. Changes in microbial community structure in CWs indicated that the better N removal performance in Fe-CWs and Mn-CWs was attributed to the presence of more abundant and diverse N-associated bacteria, especially Fe- and Mn-driven autotrophic denitrifying bacteria. What’s more, the addition of iron ore or manganese ore contributed to the better N removal performance with highest relative abundance of N-transferring bacteria under antibiotics stress.

Abstract:The ANAMMOX process with sequential biocatalyst addition (SBA-ANAMMOX process) was developed in sequencing batch reactor (SBR) to enhance nitrogen removal from ammonium-rich wastewater containing glucose content up to 800 mgCOD/L. The nitrogen removal performance of the SBR operated with 800 mgCOD/L was significantly enhanced after sequential adding 0.5 gVSS/d of high-rate ANAMMOX granules (HASGs). Kinetics analyses showed that the HASGs possessed high nitrite affinity and strong resistance to organic matter, both of which contributed to the enhancement of autotrophic nitrogen removal. Consequently. ANAMMOX became the dominant reaction to metabolize nitrite under organic conditions; denitrification was limited due to the lack of electron acceptors (nitrite and nitrate); while sulfate reduction emerged as an important process for consumption of organic matter in the SBA-ANAMMOX system. It is suggested that employing the SBA-ANAMMOX process for treatment of organic ammonium-rich wastewater, the simultaneous removal of nitrogenous compounds as well as organic matter was quite possible. Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a pollutant treatment design inspired by natural wetlands and are widely utilized for the removal of common pollutants. The research focus lies in the circulation of manganese (Mn) in the environment to enhance pollutant removal within CWs. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in understanding the role and effects of Mn in chemical weapons, based on literature retrieval from 2002 to 2021. Ecological risk assessment and heavy metals within CWs emerge as current areas of research interest. Mn sources within CWs primarily include natural deposition, heavy metal wastewater, and intentional addition. The cycling between Mn(II) and Mn(IV) facilitates enhanced wastewater treatment within CWs. Moreover, employing a Mn matrix proves effective in reducing ammonia nitrogen wastewater, organic pollutants, as well as heavy metals such as Cd and Pb, thereby addressing complex pollution challenges practically. To comprehensively analyze influencing factors on the system's performance, both internal factors (biological species, design parameters, pH levels, etc.) and external factors (seasonal climate variations, precipitation patterns, ultraviolet radiation exposure, etc.) were discussed. Among these factors, microorganisms, pollutants, and temperature are the most important influencing factors, which emphasizes the importance of these factors for wetland operation. Lastly, this paper delves into plant absorption of Mn along with coping strategies employed by plants when faced with Mn poisoning or deficiency scenarios. When utilizing Mn for the regulation of constructed wetlands, it is crucial to consider the tolerance levels of associated plant species. Furthermore, the study predicts future research hotspots encompass high-efficiency catalysis techniques, matrix-filling approaches, and preparation of resource utilization methods involving Mn nanomaterials.

Abstract:In this study, Mn-C composites using different MnO 2 contents and solid carbon material were prepared to explore the synchronous removal performance of nutrients and SMX. Higher nitrate removal performance (97–98 %) with quickest nitrate removal rate (4.97 mg N L -1 h −1 ) was obtained in Mn_20 systems. The increased Mn content and Mn-P compound were observed via surface characteristics, indicating the involvement of MnOx in pollutants removal, particularly for higher phosphorus removal (84–89 %) via Mn-P precipitation and BioMnOx adsorption. Nevertheless, compared to systems based on Mn_0 composites (74 %), systems with Mn-C composites presented lower SMX reduction efficiency (34–51 %), which might be attributed to the large Mn(II) accumulation, impairing certain microbes and lower the MnOx function. Higher abundance of genera affiliated to Bacteroidetes_vadinHA17 and Rhodocyclaceae was observed in the Mn-C composites, as well as the gathering of Geobacter and Desulfovibrio as keystone taxa, responsible for the removal of nitrate and SMX and microbial interactions. Besides, the increase of sulfonamide ARGs was closely related to the predominant microbes in the Mn-C composites, which acted as the hosts of ARGs. This study broadens the knowledge of Mn-C composites in synergetic removal of nutrients and organics, and supports the potential application of manganese oxide in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In recent years, manganese (Mn) has emerged as an accelerator for nitrogen metabolism. However, the bioactivity of manganese is limited by the restricted contact between microbes and manganese minerals in the solid phase and by the toxicity of manganese to microbes. To enhance the bioactivity of solid-phase manganese, biomineralized manganese oxide (MnOx) modified by Lactobacillus was introduced. Nitrogen removal performance have confirmed the effective role of biomineralized MnOx in accelerating the removal of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). Metagenomic analysis has confirmed the enhancement of the nitrogen metabolic pathway and microbial extracellular electron transfer (MEET) in biomineralized MnOx treatment group (BIOA group). Additionally, the enrichment of manganese oxidation and denitrification genus indicates a coupling between nitrogen metabolism and manganese metabolism. One point of views is that biomineralized MnOx-mediated nitrogen transformation processes could serve as a substitute for traditional nitrogen removal processes.

Abstract:Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a global problem. Enhanced biological nitrate reduction by liquid organics combined with low-cost natural materials (as electron donors) can cost-effectively remove nitrate from groundwater. Dissolved Mn(II) as an electron donor has been thoroughly investigated to support microbial nitrate reduction. However, most Mn in soil and sediments is in solid form, and the ability of solid-phase natural manganese oxide ore (NMO) as electron donor and for supporting microbial nitrate reduction is unknown. Therefore, a microcosm experiment was conducted to bridge this gap in knowledge. The results demonstrated that microbial nitrate reduction (mainly converted to nitrite) was enhanced by NMO (rich in cryptomelane). The electrochemical and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses suggested that NMO may be oxidized by microbial metabolism. Illumina Miseq sequencing results indicated that Acidovorax spp. played a crucial role in NMO-supported nitrate reduction. Further Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States (PICRUSt) analyses indicated that bacterial extracellular electron transfer may be one of the mechanisms for the microbial NMO oxidation. The results of our study highlight the potential importance of NMO in nitrate reduction in the natural environment and may pave the way for NMO-assisted technology for nitrate removal from groundwater with less usage of organic electron donors.
