Abstract:Luminescent materials with aggregation-induced emission (ME) property have attracted considerable interests for their promising applications in light-emitting and display devices and fluorescent probes for chemo- and biosensors. Tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivatives are the most attractive species for their notable AIE performance, facile synthesis, and flexible structure modification. To study the effects of donor and acceptor substitutions and extend the applications of TPE-based materials, three TPE kindred, TTPE, BTPEFN, and BATPEFN, are employed. TTPE film displays efficient green fluorescence (lambda(em), = 494 nm, Phi(F) = 100%), evident AIE characteristic (alpha(AIE) 154), and reversible mechanochromism by grinding-fuming: from blue (lambda(em), = 472 nm) to green emission (lambda(em) = 505 nm). Replacing two phenyls by two cyano (A) groups on the central TPE moiety derives BTPEFN, whose film shows efficient orange fluorescence (lambda(em) = 575 nm, Phi(F) = 100%) and evident ATE (alpha(AIE) = 13). The mechanochromic behavior of BTPEFN (from yellow to orange emission, lambda(em) from 541 to 563 nm) is reversible by repeating both the grinding-fuming and grinding-annealing processes. The cyano groups bestow BTPEFN with evident intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) property, the emission color can be tuned from green to red-orange by changing solvent from hexane to THF, while the emission of TTPE shows much less response to solvent polarity. Cyanos also endow BTPEFN with better self-assemble ability in proper conditions, and the obtained regular microribbons emit bright green fluorescence. Further decoration of BTPEFN with N,N-diethyamino (D) groups results in BATPEFN. Due to the cooperative effects of D and A groups, BATPEFN shows dramatic red-shifted fluorescence (lambda(em) = 713 nm), evident ICT process, and enhanced solvatochromism (from red to infrared).

Abstract:In this current research, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/polyethylene glycol (PEG)/methylcellulose (MC), (PVA-PEG-MC), (8:1:1) blend composite films reinforced with varying loadings of Eriochrome Black T dye were formed via a solution casting methodology. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy were applied to examine the influence of EBT dye packing on (PVA-PEG-MC) properties, especially optical ones. From XRD investigations, it became apparent that the incorporated EBT dye interrupted the crystallinity phase of the blend matrix. Furthermore, in the FTIR spectra, considerable band shifting and decreases in transmittance intensity for the doped samples were seen, which confirmed the development of the H-bond between the matrix and the dopant. The UV–Vis absorption and transmittance spectra are moved to longer wavelengths, suggesting the importance of these composites in light shielding devices. The indirect allowed transition was prominent in all studied samples, according to three effective approaches involving Tauc's equation, the ASF model, and the εi−hν plot, where increasing the addition of EBT dye resulted in a drop of two optical energy band gap ( Eg(1)ind ) and ( Eg(2)ind ) values. Tailing in the band gap was shown to follow the Urbach rule. Six distinct models were utilized to determine the approximate values of the linear refractive index ( n ) using the estimated gap energies values, where the mean (average) value of the refractive index for the pristine (PVA- PEG-MC) matrix was 2.082. In contrast, it was 2.28 for the EBT dye composite film. Additionally, several other optical parameters were identified, including the extinction coefficient (K), optical dielectric parameters, energy loss functions for surfaces and volumes, optical and electrical conductivity. Nonlinear optical parameters χ(3) , χ(1) and n2 were calculated and analyzed for the EBT dye/(PVA-PEG-MC) composite films under examination. The optical limiting features revealed that the high amount of EBT dye incorporated in the ternary (PVA- PEG-MC) blend matrix reduces the output and normalized power utilizing different wavelength laser sources, which is suitable for optical limiting and laser attenuation in optoelectronic instruments. The unique results in the current work suggest applications for EBT dye/(PVA-PEG-MC) composite films in linear and nonlinear optical systems.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on through-space donor and acceptor interactions constitute a recent and promising approach to develop efficient TADF emitters. Novel TADF isomers using a dithia[3.3]-paracyclophane building block as a versatile 3D platform to promote through-space interactions are presented. Such a 3D platform allows to bring together the D and A units into close proximity and to probe the effect of their orientation, contact site and distance on their TADF emission properties. This study provides evidence that the dithia[3.3]paracyclophane core is a promising platform to control intramolecular through-space interactions and obtain an efficient TADF emission with short reverse-intersystem crossing (RISC) lifetimes. In addition, this study demonstrates that this design can tune the energy levels of the triplet states and leads to an upconversion from (CT)-C-3 to (LE)-L-3 that promotes faster and more efficient RISC to the (CT)-C-1 singlet state.

Abstract:Rhodamine 6G – polymethylmethacrylate/polycarbonate (Rh6G–PMMA/PC) were prepared by a casting method at room temperature with diverse volume ratios of Rh6G dye solution (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25) ml. The as-prepared films were categorised via UV–Vis spectrophotometer, and the optical properties were investigated in the wavelength range of (200-800) nm. The absorption peaks for pure PMMA/PC film were affected by inserting Rh6G dye solution, the wavelength of absorption peak of pure PMMA/PC film is at 300 nm and 340 nm while there are different behaveior at different concentration of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films; there are red shift for concentrations (10 and 25 ml) of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films by appear another peaks at 530 nm and 535 nm respectively. In addition, there is a blue shift for concentrations (15 and 20 ml) of RG6 after mixing with PMMA/PC films, as evidenced by the appearance of new peaks at wavelength 265 nm. Furthermore, new peaks appeared and were absorbed while the energy band gap was influenced, with values ranging from 4.3 eV for pure PMMA/PC film to 4.18 eV for mixtures 10 and 25 ml concentration of Rh6G/ PMMA/PC belonging to the red shift to 4.9 eV and 4.85 eV for mixtures 15 and 20 ml concentration of Rh6G/ PMMA/PC belonging to the blue shift.

Abstract:Various dyes mixtures consisting of perylene red (P-red), pyrromethene 567 (PM567) and coumarin dyes are incorporated into vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES)-derived gel glasses, respectively. Energy transfer processes among dyes are investigated by measuring the time-resolved and steady-state emission spectra, and fluorescence lifetime of each dye. The energy transfer mechanisms are discussed with 4 categories of dye pairs and extended fluorescence lifetime of PM567 and P-red are observed. The radiative and non-radiative nature of the energy transfer processes and their dependence on the donor dye concentration are estimated, paving the way for highly efficient, stable and broadly tunable solid-state dye laser materials.

Abstract:In this text, by linking a phenoxazine donor (D) into different positions of the 11,12-diphenyldipyrido[3,2-a:2′,3′-c]phenazine acceptor (A), Two novel red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) isomers, PPZBP and BPZPP, were designed and synthesized. The different connection modes bring different steric hindrance between D and A segments, which lead to tunable conjugation of the whole molecule, resulting in the change of locally excited triplet (3LE) state. Beneficial from the suitable conjugation, PPZBP shows better energy level alignments than BPZPP for superior triplet up conversion. PPZBP-based red organic light-emitting diode realizes a higher EQE of 22.0% than that (14.8%) of the BPZPP-based one. This work not only demonstrates the importance of controlling D-A conjugations on the 3LE states and the resultant influences on RISC rates, it also gives a deep insight into preferred design strategies for high-efficiency red TADF emitters.

Abstract:Three novel organic dyes containing 2,6-dicarbonyl-pyridine as the central electron acceptor with different end-caped amino groups as donors in the D-pi-A-pi-D arrangement are designed and synthesized. All three molecules exhibit large TPA cross-sections (delta > 1000 GM). The cooperative effects of donor strength, conjugation length and solvent polarity on the TPA activity are studied. The conjugated system plays an important role on the enhancement of delta in the highly polar solvent, while donor strength has more impact on TPA properties. The influence of the solvent polarity on TPA properties is studied by two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) measurement. The result shows a nonmonotonic relationship between the TPA cross-section and the solvent, and the maximum of delta is found in solvents with moderate polarity. The delta of molecules with stronger donor reaches the maximum in more polar solvents. The highest delta is found to be 5250 GM in CHCl3. All compounds exhibit large Stokes shifts due to the strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) effect. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Polymer blends of poly(methyl acrylate) and modified polystyrene (PS(OH)) with introduced strong proton-donating hydroxyl groups have been studied by non-radiative energy transfer fluorescence. As the content of hydroxyl in PS(OH) increases from 0 to 1.6 mol%, the efficiency of energy transfer increases gradually. This modification corresponds to the morphological change observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) from the completely phase-separated state to the single-phase state. Blends with hydroxyl contents in PS(OH) > 7 mol% show much higher efficiency of energy transfer than miscible blends, indicating a certain structural change which cannot be detected by TEM. The effect of the formation rate of the toluene cast films on morphology and the effect of chromophore concentration on efficiency of energy transfer are also discussed.

Abstract:This study is aimed to shed light on the electronic absorption and emission spectra of DBDMA (2-(1-(difluoroboraneyl)-1,2-dihydroquinolin-2-yl)-2-(1-methylquinoxalin-2-ylidene) acetonitrile) in different solvents. Both types of spectra were obtained theoretically and produced experimentally in different solvents. The photostability of dye was tested, and its energy transfer behavior in the presence of oxygen and hydrated copper sulfate quenchers was investigated. We also gave a qualitative estimation of the effect of acidic media on the absorption and emission spectra. There is good compatibility between the calculated and measured values of many photophysical parameters. DBDMA has a low chemical quantum yield in solvents of different polarities, and the fluorescence quantum yield is high enough, which confirms, together with the low values of the excited state lifetime, its efficiency as laser emitting dye in the range of wavelength emission maxima. The rigidity of the DBDMA molecule is the main reason for the photochemical stability and the absence of a considerable shift as a result of the change in the polarity of the solvents. Geometries of ground and excited states were optimized using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), respectively. Upon using the TD-DFT method, the UV-Vis absorption and emission spectra of the DBDMA molecule in different solvents were illustrated. A slight change is observed in the position of the maximum emission and absorption wavelength with the change of the solvent due to the rigidity of the compound. There was no apparent effect of quenching by oxygen. Besides, no intersystem crossing (ISC) was observed for the excited state of the DBDMA as a result of aeration of a solution with O2 for 20 min, which was an explanation of the stability of peak emission intensity of dye after exposure to oxygen gas. The energy transfer rate constant has been calculated as well.

Abstract:A series of hemicyanine dyes, including monomer ([(E)-N-methyl-4-(2-(4-N,N-dimethyl phenyl) ethenyl) pyridinium] iodide; M) and dimers (1,n-Bis [(E)- 4-(2-(4-N,N-dimethyl phenyl) ethenyl) pyridinyl]-alkane dibromide; n = 3, alkane = propane, B3: n = 5, alkane = pentane, 135; n = 12, alkane = dodecane, 1312), are synthesized and their ultrafast fluorescence up-conversion behaviors are studied. The fluorescence decay curves of these dyes can be well fitted by the sum of several exponential decays in the shorter wavelengths and by the sum of the exponential rise's) with decay(s) in the longer wavelengths. The fact that the values of longest lifetime component at longer wavelengths tend to be a constant proves the existence of a "sink" region on the potential energy surface of excited state. This sink region is around the TICT state, by which the nonradiative transition dominates the deactive decay paths of excited state. The time dependent Stokes shift function analysis of these four dye molecules in methanol indicates that the B5's unique "solvation" behavior is different from others. This difference is contributed by the increased difficulty of the TICT formation of 135 originated from its folded conformation. The time dependent Stokes shifts of M, B3, and B12 are due to not only solvation dynamics but also TICT formation. Detailed analysis is presented in the frame of a "two-state three-mode" model.
Tuning Energy Transfer Efficiency in Quantum Dots Mixture by Controling Donor/acceptor Ratio

Abstract:Improving the emission performance of colloidal quantum dots (QDs) is of paramount importance for their applications on light-emitting diodes (LEDs), displays and lasers. A highly promising approach is to tune the carrier recombination channels and lifetime by exploiting the energy transfer process. However, to achieve this precise emission optimization, quantitative modulation on energy transfer efficiency is highly desirable but still challenging. Here, we demonstrate a convenient approach to realize tunable energy transfer efficiency by forming QDs mixture with controllable donor/acceptor (D/A) ratio. With the mixing ratio ranging from 16/1 to 1/16, the energy transfer efficiency could be effectively tuned from near zero to ∼ 70%. For the high mixing ratio of 16/1, acceptors obtain adequate energy supplied by closely surrounding donors, leading to ∼ 2.4-fold PL enhancement. While for the low mixing ratio, the ultrafast and efficient energy extraction process directly suppresses the multi-exciton and Auger recombination in the donor, bringing about a higher threshold. The facile modulation of emission performance by controllably designed mixing ratio and quantitatively tunable energy transfer efficiency will facilitate QD-based optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications.
Investigating functional performance and substituent effect in modelling molecular structure, UV-visible spectra, and optical properties of D-π-A conjugated organic dye molecules: a DFT and TD-DFT study

Abstract:The molecular structure, UV-visible spectra, and optical properties of D-π-A conjugated organic dye molecules (Disperse Red 1 (DR1) and Disperse Red 73 (DR73)) were analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and compared with azobenzene molecule to study the effect of donor and acceptor substituents on the molecular properties. The performance of DFT functionals is investigated using B3LYP hybrid functional and three long-range corrected functionals (CAM-B3LYP, LC-ω PBE, and ω B97XD) in conjunction with 6-31G(d,p) basis set. Using TD-DFT, we calculate the vertical excitation energies and transition dipole moment values for 100 excited states. These values were further utilized to calculate frequency dependent polarizability under sum-over-states (SOS) formalism and refractive index of these molecular systems. We observe that for azobenzene and DR1 molecules, ω B97XD predicted wavelengths corresponding to peak absorbance closest to the experimental results, while for DR73 molecule, B3LYP gave better prediction. Large polarizability response is also observed for these molecules (DR1 and DR73) in comparison to parent azobenzene structure due to charge transfer between donor and acceptor groups. For DR1 and DR73 molecules, αxx component of polarizability dominates in contrast to azobenzene where αyy dominates. The HOMO → LUMO transition during excitation contributes to the peak molecular response in simulated UV-visible spectra. The high polarizability response of selected D-π-A conjugated molecules in comparison to parent molecule suggests that these molecules are promising candidates for tailor-made photonic and optoelectronic device development.Graphical Functional and substituent effect on the optical response of D-π-A conjugated molecules modelled using DFT and TDDFT.

Abstract:This manuscript presents research on the optoelectronic and energy transfer properties of conjugated polymer poly ( N , N′ -bis-4-butylphenyl-N,N'-bisphenyl)benzidine (poly-TPD) and laser dye Fluorol 7GA (F7GA) hybrid thin films prepared via solution blending technique. Various weight ratios of F7GA were added to a fixed concentration of poly-TPD to form homogeneous hybrids. The hybrid thin films were characterized using absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results showed enhanced absorption, widened optical bandgaps, slight blue-shifted emission, and decreased refractive index in the hybrid films compared to pristine poly-TPD. The significant spectral overlap between the emission spectrum of poly-TPD and the absorption spectrum of F7GA, allowing for efficient Förster resonance energy transfer. Parameters including efficiency, distance, lifetime, and probability of energy transfer were calculated to quantitatively analyze energy transfer. Modulation of F7GA content led to tunable emission colors across the visible spectrum. Overall, the successful energy transfer demonstrated in this study paves the way for exciting future directions in the field of poly-TPD/F7GA hybrid materials for advanced optoelectronic applications.

Management of triplet excitons transition: fine regulation of Förster and dexter energy transfer simultaneously

Abstract:Abstract Understanding and management of triplet excitons transition in the same molecule remain a great challenge. Hence, for the first time, by host engineering, manageable transitions of triplet excitons in a naphthalimide derivative NDOH were achieved, and monitored through the intensity ratio (I TADF /I RTP ) between thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP). Energy differences between lowest triplet excited states of host and guest were changed from 0.03 to 0.17 eV, and I TADF /I RTP of NDOH decreased by 200 times, thus red shifting the afterglow color. It was proposed that shorter conjugation length led to larger band gaps of host materials, thus contributing to efficient Dexter and inefficient Förster energy transfer. Interestingly, no transition to singlet state and only strongest RTP with quantum yield of 13.9% could be observed, when PBNC with loosest stacking and largest band gap acted as host. This work provides novel insight for the management and prediction of triplet exciton transitions and the development of smart afterglow materials.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have been widely investigated in organic light emitting diodes, etc. Small singlet-triplet energy gap and high radiative constants are desired. The prevalent TADF molecules are via donor-acceptor molecular design, which is at the expense of reducing radiative constants. Herein, we demonstrated a new singlet-triplet energy gap modulation approach to construct TADF with high radiative constant, based on triplet blocking effect, i.e., the extension of conjugation of a triplet constrainer (IB) leads to a gradually red-shifted singlet but a constant triplet energy, and therefore reduced singlet-triplet energy gap controlled from monomer (IB), monomer-linker (IB-BF2), to dimer of IB-BF2-IB. The natural transition orbital analysis indicates that singlet state is delocalized while triplet state is localized as confirmed by time resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Therefore, the singlet-triplet energy gap is reduced from 0.60 eV, 0.46 eV to 0.25 eV, while keeping faster radiation rate (around 10^8/s) than that of conventional donor-acceptor molecules (10^6 ~ 10^7/s). As a result, the emission mechanisms are regulated from fluorescence for IB, phosphorescence/TADF dual emissions for IB-BF2 to TADF for IB-BF2-IB. This paper proposed a new approach of singlet-triplet energy gap modulation, which is crucial for fundamental photophysics and material science.

Transparent Near‐IR Dye‐Sensitized Solar Cells: Ultrafast Spectroscopy Reveals the Effects of Driving Force and Dye Aggregation

Abstract:Abstract In the context of developing transparent near‐IR absorbing dye‐sensitized solar cells, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) cyanine dyes have recently emerged as an alternative to strongly aggregating linear cyanines. In our efforts to increase both the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the average visible transmittance (AVT), a thienylated version, called TB202 , that shows a red‐shifted absorption with respect to our champion dye TB207 was designed. However, the lower energy LUMO level of TB202 brings along a lower driving force (−ΔG) for carrier injection, which we recently identified as the main parameter limiting the PCE to 1.5 % in the best device conditions. In the present paper, we publish a detailed account of the effect of the de‐aggregating cheno‐deoxycholic acid (CDCA) for both TB207 and TB202 . Both transient absorption (TAS) and fluorescence up‐conversion (FLUPS) data are presented, which allow to quantitively compare the effect of −ΔG and the CDCA concentration, in terms of the kinetic competition of ensemble averaged carrier injection and monomer‐to‐aggregate energy transfer (ET) rates. A comprehensive picture emerges on how ET is reduced by higher CDCA concentrations, leading in the best device conditions to injection efficiencies in the range of 65 % for TB207 and only 35 % for TB202 .

Abstract:In this study, the spectroscopic properties and optoelectronic parameters of a ternary composite containing poly(L-Tryptophane): P(TER-CO-TRI) and Sudan dye were thoroughly investigated. Poly(L-Tryptophane) and P (TER-CO-TRI), the electron acceptor and donor, were solution processed and doped with different ratios of Sudan dye to form ternary composite systems. The FTIR technique, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were utilized to study the broad properties of the samples. Results showed that with the help of dye doping, the non-dispersive refractive index and energy gap of the ternary system were increased to 2.00 and decreased to 2.11 eV, respectively. The optical band gap, refractive index, dielectric constant, and optical conductivity of the samples were elaborated. The nature of the electronic transition in the studied samples was found to be a direct allowed transition, which was derived from the application of Tauc’s equation. The combination of CV test and absorption spectroscopy was successfully used to determine the molecular energy levels, HOMO and LUMO of the polymer samples.
Photophysical properties of intramolecular charge transfer in two newly synthesized tribranched donor-π-acceptor chromophores

Abstract:The nature of optical excitation and the degree of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) as well as the dynamics of excited ICT states of two new tribranched donor-pi-acceptor molecules with acceptor-terminated (DA(3)) and acceptor-centered (AD(3)) geometries have been investigated by steady-state and femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission fluorescence depletion (FS TR-SEP FD) measurements in different polar solvents. The interpretation of the experimental results is based on the comparative investigation of the two D-pi-A compounds with respect to the model monomer counterpart (DA). The larger solvatochromic effects and stronger solvent dependence of spectral properties of DA(3) than that of AD(3) indicate that the excited ICT state of DA(3) possesses higher polarity and larger dipole moments compared to those of AD(3). The similarity of absorption and strong solvent-dependent fluorescence spectra of DA(3) and DA reveals that the excited-state properties of DA(3) are identical to that of the model DA, which localized on one of the branches in DA(3). In contrast to DA(3), the large red shift in the absorption and the small Stokes shift of AD(3) suggest the formation of a delocalized ICT state to a certain extent in the excited state of AD(3). The dynamic behavior of excited ICT states for all three compounds are also investigated by femtosecond time-resolved stimulated emission depletion (FS TR-SEP FD) measurements, where the excited-state relaxations are highly dependent on both solvent polarity and the polar degree of the excited ICT states. Furthermore, the steady-state fluorescence excitation anisotropy shows that the intramolecular excitation transfer among the three disorder-induced localized ICT states with nondegenerate transition dipole moments is involved within DA(3). Compared to DA(3), a substantial red shift in the absorption of AD(3) results from the formation of a delocalized ICT state, where the specific excitation anisotropy spectrum shows that the excitation energy is mainly redistributed between the localized ICT state and the delocalized ICT state.
Tuning Chromaticity Based on Energy Transfer from the Conjugated Polymer to the Eu(TTA)3 Moiety

Abstract:The conjugated polymer P-1 was synthesized by the polymerization of 5,5'-divinyl-2,2'-bipyridine (M-1) and N,N'-bis(octyl)-1,7-dibromoperylene diimide (M-2) via Heck cross coupling. The bipyridyl moiety in P-1 can further incorporate Eu(TTA)(3)center dot 2H(2)O/Gd(TTA)(3)center dot 2H(2)O to generate polymer complexes P-2 and P-3, respectively. Interestingly, P-2 exhibits exceptional emissive properties which can be tuned by excitation wavelengths. For example, a green fluorescence can be obtained when P-2 is excited at 440 nm, whereas a red emission with a huge Stokes shift of 248 nm is observed when it is excited at 365 nm. The red fluorescence can be attributed to Eu(III) (D-5(0)-> F-7(2)), which is caused by an effective photoinduced energy transfer process between P-1 and the Eu(TTA)(3) moiety. However, P-3 only emits green fluorescence, and emission intensities depend on the selected excitation wavelengths. The rare excitation induced emission color change of P-2 has led to a better understanding the correlation of photophysical properties between perylenyl moiety and Eu(TTA)(3) moiety.

Abstract:A photorefractive composite composed of 8-pertyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (80CB)/N,N'-diphenyl-N,N'-bis(3-methylphenyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diamine (TPD)/2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF)/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium (Alq(3))/polycarbonate plastic was fabricated. The additive of Alq3 in the composite leads to a larger two-beam coupling coefficient Gamma and shorter response time. Gamma over 330 cm(-1) at an applied electric field of 26 V mum(-1) was measured while Gamma of the sample without Alq(3) was only 213 cm(-1). It is presumed that the electron-injecting material Alq(3) and charge-transporting material TPD form more effective traps in the composite, which leads to the improvement in the PR performance.
