Abstract:The global patterns and drivers of relative contributions of denitrification, anammox, and DNRA to soil or sediment nitrate reduction remain unknown, limiting our understanding of global nitrogen balance and sustainable nitrogen management. Our meta‐analysis indicated that denitrification contributed up to 66.1% of total nitrate reduction globally, being significantly greater in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Anammox and DNRA accounted for 12.7% and 21.2% of total nitrate reduction, respectively. The local environmental factors controlling the relative contributions of these nitrogen cycling processes to nitrate reduction included the concentrations of soil organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate, and ferrous iron. Denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are three competing processes of microbial nitrate reduction that determine the degree of ecosystem nitrogen (N) loss versus recycling. However, the global patterns and drivers of relative contributions of these N cycling processes to soil or sediment nitrate reduction remain unknown, limiting our understanding of the global N balance and management. Here, we compiled a global dataset of 1570 observations from a wide range of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. We found that denitrification contributed up to 66.1% of total nitrate reduction globally, being significantly greater in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Anammox and DNRA could account for 12.7% and 21.2% of total nitrate reduction, respectively. The contribution of denitrification to nitrate reduction increased with longitude, while the contribution of anammox and DNRA decreased. The local environmental factors controlling the relative contributions of the three N cycling processes to nitrate reduction included the concentrations of soil organic carbon, ammonium, nitrate, and ferrous iron. Our results underline the dominant role of denitrification over anammox and DNRA in ecosystem nitrate transformation, which is crucial to improving the current global soil N cycle model and achieving sustainable N management.

Importance of Denitrification Driven by the Relative Abundances of Microbial Communities in Coastal Wetlands.

Abstract:Excessive nitrogen (N) loadings from human activities have led to increased eutrophication and associated water quality impacts in China's coastal wetlands. Denitrification accounts for significant reduction of inorganic N to nitrous oxide (N2O) or dinitrogen gas (N2), and thereby curtails harmful effects of N pollution in coastal and marine ecosystems. However, the molecular drivers and limiting steps of denitrification in coastal wetlands are not well understood. Here, we quantified the abundances of functional genes involved in N cycling and determined denitrification rates using 15N paring technique in the coastal wetland sediments of Bohai Economic Rim in eastern China. Denitrification accounting for 80.7 ± 12.6% of N removal was the dominant pathway for N removal in the coastal wetlands. In comparison, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) removed up to 36.9 ± 7.3% of inorganic N. Structural equation modeling analysis indicated that the effects of ammonium on denitrification potential were mainly mediated by the relative abundances of nosZ/nirS, nirS/(narG + napA) and amoA/nirK. Denitrification was limited by the relative strength of two steps, namely N2O reduction to N2 and nitrite (NO2-) reduction to nitric oxide (NO). Our results suggest that the relative abundances of functional genes which are more stable than sediment chemical compounds in the context of environmental changes are indictive of denitrification potential in coastal wetlands.
Global variations and controlling factors of anammox rates

Abstract:Soil anammox is an environmentally‐friendly way to eliminate reactive nitrogen (N) without generating nitrous oxide. Nevertheless, the current earth system models have not incorporated the anammox due to the lack of parameters in anammox rates on a global scale, limiting the accurate projection for N cycling. A global synthesis with 1212 observations from 89 peer‐reviewed papers showed that the average anammox rate was 1.60 ± 0.17 nmol N g‐1 h‐1 in terrestrial ecosystems, with significant variations across different ecosystems. Wetlands exhibited the highest rate (2.17 ± 0.31 nmol N g‐1 h‐1), followed by croplands at 1.02 ± 0.09 nmol N g‐1 h‐1. The lowest anammox rates were observed in forests and grasslands. The anammox rates were positively correlated with the mean annual temperature, mean annual precipitation, soil moisture, organic carbon (C), total N, as well as nitrite and ammonium concentrations, but negatively with the soil C:N ratio. Structural equation models revealed that the geographical variations in anammox rates were primarily influenced by the N contents (such as nitrite and ammonium) and abundance of anammox bacteria, which collectively accounted for 42% of the observed variance. Furthermore, the abundance of anammox bacteria was well simulated by the mean annual precipitation, soil moisture, and ammonium concentrations, and 51% variance of the anammox bacteria was accounted for. The key controlling factors for soil anammox rates differed from ecosystem type, e.g., organic C, total N, and ammonium contents in croplands, versus soil C:N ratio and nitrite concentrations in wetlands. The controlling factors in soil anammox rate identified by this study are useful to construct an accurate anammox module for N cycling in earth system models.

Abstract:Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), the nearly forgotten process in the terrestrial nitrogen (N) cycle, can conserve N by converting the mobile nitrate into non-mobile ammonium avoiding nitrate losses via denitrification, leaching, and runoff. However, global patterns and controlling factors of soil DNRA are still only rudimentarily known. By a meta-analysis of 231 observations from 85 published studies across terrestrial ecosystems, we find a global mean DNRA rate of 0.31 ± 0.05 mg N kg-1 day-1, being significantly greater in paddy soils (1.30 ± 0.59) than in forests (0.24 ± 0.03), grasslands (0.52 ± 0.15), and unfertilized croplands (0.18 ± 0.04). Soil DNRA was significantly enhanced at higher altitude and lower latitude. Soil DNRA was positively correlated with precipitation, temperature, pH, soil total carbon, and soil total N. Precipitation was the main stimulator for soil DNRA. Total carbon and pH were also important factors, but their effects were ecosystem-specific as total carbon stimulates DNRA in forest soils, whereas pH stimulates DNRA in unfertilized croplands and paddy soils. Higher temperatures inhibit soil DNRA via decreasing total carbon. Moreover, nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were negatively related to soil DNRA. Thus, future changes in climate and land-use may interact with management practices that alter soil substrate availability and/or soil pH to enhance soil DNRA with positive effects on N conservation and lower N2O emissions.
Seeking the hotspots of nitrogen removal: A comparison of sediment denitrification rate and denitrifier abundance among wetland types with different hydrological conditions

Abstract:Wetlands play a vital role in removing nitrogen (N) from aquatic environments via the denitrification process, which is regulated by multiple environmental and biological factors. Until now, the mechanisms by which environmental factors and microbial abundance regulate denitrification rates in wetlands under different hydrological conditions remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated sediment potential denitrification rate (PDR) and unamended denitrification rate (UDR), and quantified denitrifier abundance (nirS, nirK, and nosZ genes) in 36 stream, river, pond, and ditch wetland sites along the Dan River, a nitrogen-rich river in central China. The result indicated that ditches had the highest denitrification rates and denitrifier abundance. Both PDR and UDR showed strong seasonality, and were observed to be negatively correlated with water velocity in streams and rivers. Moreover, denitrification rates were significantly related to denitrifier abundance and many water quality parameters and sediment properties. Interestingly, PDR and UDR were generally positively associated with N and carbon (C) availability in streams and rivers, but such correlations were not found in ponds and ditches. Using a scaling analysis, we found that environmental parameters, including Reynolds number, sediment total C ratio, and interstitial space, coupled with relative nirS gene abundance could predict the hotspots of denitrification rates in wetlands with varying hydrologic regimes. Our findings highlight that hydrological conditions, especially water velocity and hydrologic pulsing, play a nonnegligible role in determining N biogeochemical processes in wetlands.

Abstract:The denitrification process profoundly affects soil nitrogen (N) availability and generates its byproduct, nitrous oxide, as a potent greenhouse gas. There are large uncertainties in predicting global denitrification because its controlling factors remain elusive. In this study, we compiled 4301 observations of denitrification rates across a variety of terrestrial ecosystems from 214 papers published in the literature. The averaged denitrification rate was 3516.3 ± 91.1 µg N kg-1 soil day-1 . The highest denitrification rate was 4242.3 ± 152.3 µg N kg-1 soil day-1 under humid subtropical climates, and the lowest was 965.8 ± 150.4 µg N kg-1 under dry climates. The denitrification rate increased with temperature, precipitation, soil carbon and N contents, as well as microbial biomass carbon and N, but decreased with soil clay contents. The variables related to soil N contents (e.g., nitrate, ammonium, and total N) explained the variation of denitrification more than climatic and edaphic variables (e.g., mean annual temperature (MAT), soil moisture, soil pH, and clay content) according to structural equation models. Soil microbial biomass carbon, which was influenced by soil nitrate, ammonium, and total N, also strongly influenced denitrification at a global scale. Collectively, soil N contents, microbial biomass, pH, texture, moisture, and MAT accounted for 60% of the variation in global denitrification rates. The findings suggest that soil N contents and microbial biomass are strong predictors of denitrification at the global scale.

Denitrifier abundance and community composition linked to denitrification potential in river sediments

Abstract:Denitrification in river sediments plays a very important role in removing nitrogen in aquatic ecosystem. To gain insight into the key factors driving denitrification at large spatial scales, a total of 135 sediment samples were collected from Huaihe River and its branches located in the northern of Anhui province. Bacterial community composition and denitrifying functional genes (nirS, nirK, and nosZ) were measured by high-throughput sequencing and real-time PCR approaches. Potential denitrification rate (PDR) was measured by acetylene inhibition method, which varied from 0.01 to 15.69 μg N g-1 h-1. The sequencing results based on 16S rRNA gene found that the main denitrification bacterial taxa included Bacillus, Thiobacillus, Acinetobacter, Halomonas, Denitratisoma, Pseudomonas, Rhodanobacter, and Thauera. Therein, Thiobacillus might play key roles in the denitrification. Total nitrogen and N:P ratio were the only chemical factors related with all denitrification genes. Furthermore, nirS gene abundance could be more susceptible to environmental parameters compared with nirK and nosZ genes. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that NO3-, NO2-, NH4+ and IP had the significant impacts on the nirS-encoding bacterial community and spatial distributions. There was a significantly positive correlation between Thiobacillus and nirS gene. We considered that higher numbers of nosZ appeared in nutrient rich sediments. More strikingly, PDR was positively correlated with the abundance of three functional genes. Random forest analysis showed that NH4+ was the most powerful predictor of PDR. These findings can yield practical and important reference for the bioremediation or evaluation of wetland systems.
Biotic Factors Drive Distinct DNRA Potential Rates and Contributions in Typical Chinese Shallow Lake Sediments.

Abstract:Dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonia (DNRA) is an important nitrate reduction pathway in lake sediments; however, little is known about the biotic factors driving the DNRA potential rates and contributions to the fate of nitrate. This study reports the first investigation of DNRA potential rates and contributions in lake sediments linked to DNRA community structures. The results of N-15 isotope-tracing incubation experiments showed that 12 lakes had distinct DNRA potentials, which could be clustered into 2 groups, one with higher DNRA potentials (rates varied from 2.7 to 5.0 nmol N g(-1) h(-1) and contributions varied from 27.5% to 35.4%) and another with lower potentials (rates varied from 0.6 to 2.3 nmol N g(-1) h(-1) and contributions varied from 8.1% to 22.8%). Sediment C/N and the abundance of the nrfA gene were the key abiotic and biotic factors accounting for the distinct DNRA potential rates, respectively. A high-throughput sequencing analysis of the nrfA gene revealed that the sediment C/N could also affect the DNRA potential rates by altering the ecological patterns of the DNRA community composition. In addition, the interactions between the DNRA community and the denitrifying community were found to be obviously different in the two groups. In the higher DNRA potential group, the DNRA community mainly interacted with heterotrophic denitrifiers, while in the lower DNRA potential group, both heterotrophic and sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrifiers might cooperate with the DNRA community. The present study highlighted the role of the sulfur-driven nitrate reduction pathway in C-limited sediments, which has always been overlooked in freshwater environments, and gave new insights into the molecular mechanism influencing the fate of nitrate. Abstract:Nitrogen (N) cycling in rivers is particularly active and dynamic due to excess nutrient inputs worldwide. However, the multidimensional spatial patterns of the activity and community structure of N-cycling microorganisms in rivers remain unclear, limiting our understanding of river ecological functions, especially N removal capacity. Here, we measured the nitrification and denitrification rates and identified nitrifying and denitrifying microorganisms using high-throughput sequencing of archaeal amoA , bacterial amoA, nirK , and nirS genes in channel sediments, riparian rhizosphere soils, and riparian bulk soils of 30 N-polluted rivers across China. Results showed that in the lateral dimension, nitrification rates in sediments did not differ significantly from those in rhizosphere and bulk soils, but denitrification rates were higher in sediments than in bulk soils. However, the archaeal amoA gene abundance in sediments was considerably lower than that in rhizosphere and bulk soils, and bacterial amoA gene abundance in sediments was greater than that in rhizosphere soils. In the vertical dimension, both nitrification and denitrification rates in riparian bulk soils decreased with soil depth, and topsoils harbored more nitrifying and denitrifying microbes than subsoils. Denitrification but not nitrification rates increased with latitude and altitude but decreased with increasing mean annual temperature and precipitation. Overall, these results provide new insights into the multidimensional spatial patterns of river N cycling at a large scale, which is crucial to evaluating the N removal function of global rivers.

Abstract:Soil nitrification, an important pathway of nitrogen transformation in ecosystems, produces soil nitrate that influences net primary productivity, while the by‐product of nitrification, nitrous oxide, is a significant green‐house gas. Although there have been many studies addressing the microbiology, physiology, and impacting environment factors of soil nitrification at local scales, there are very few studies on soil nitrification rate over large scales. We conducted a global synthesis on the patterns and controlling factors of soil nitrification rate normalized at 25°C by compiling 3140 observations from 186 published articles across terrestrial ecosystems. Soil nitrification rate tended to decrease with increasing latitude, especially in the north hemisphere, and varied largely with ecosystem types. The soil nitrification rate significantly increased with mean annual temperature, soil nitrogen content, microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, soil ammonium, and soil pH, but decreased with soil carbon:nitrogen and carbon:nitrogen of microbial biomass. The total soil nitrogen content contributed the most to the variations of global soil nitrification rate (total coefficient = 0.29) in structural equation models. The microbial biomass nitrogen (total coefficient = 0.19) was nearly of equivalent importance relative to mean annual temperature (total coefficient = 0.25) and soil pH (total coefficient = 0.24) in determining soil nitrification rate, while soil nitrogen and pH influenced soil nitrification via changing soil microbial biomass nitrogen. Moreover, the emission of soil nitrous oxide was positively related to soil nitrification rate at a global scale. This synthesis will advance our current understanding on the mechanisms underlying large scale variations of soil nitrification and benefit the biogeochemical models in simulating global nitrogen cycling.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To assess associations between the quantity and quality of children's sleep and parent- and teacher-reported psychiatric symptoms. METHOD Forty-nine physically healthy 7- to 12-year-old children from normal classes participated. They were monitored for 72 consecutive hours with belt-worn activity monitors (actigraphs) to obtain objective data on their daytime and nighttime activity and sleep. In addition, Child Behavior Checklists and Teacher's Report Forms were filled out by the parents and teachers, respectively. RESULTS Quantity of sleep was significantly associated with total symptom score on the Teacher's Report Form. The highest associations were found between low true sleep time and teacher-reported externalizing symptoms such as aggressive and delinquent behavior and attention and social problems. Sleep parameters were not associated with parent-reported psychiatric symptoms, except for the association found between delayed sleep latency and aggressive, delinquent behavior. CONCLUSIONS The objectively measured amount of school-age children's sleep was associated with teacher-reported psychiatric symptoms. Parents may be unaware of their child's sleep deficiencies as the behavioral problems may be more evident at school than at home. Sensitive and objective measurements are needed to rule out the possibility of inadequate sleep underlying behavioral problems.

Abstract:Dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes, including denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), are important pathways of nitrate transformation in the aquatic environments. In this study, we investigated potential rates of denitrification, anammox, and DNRA in the sediments of two subtropical rivers, Jinshui River and Qi River, with different intensities of human activities in their respective catchment, China. Our objectives were to assess the seasonality of dissimilatory nitrate reduction rates, quantify their respective contributions to nitrate reduction, and reveal the relationship between dissimilatory nitrate reduction rates, functional gene abundances, and physicochemicals in the river ecosystems. Our results showed higher rates of denitrification and anammox in the intensively disturbed areas in autumn and spring, and higher potential DNRA in the slightly disturbed areas in summer. Generally, denitrification, anammox, and DNRA were higher in summer, autumn, and spring, respectively. Relative contributions of nitrate reduction from denitrification, anammox, and DNRA were quite different in different seasons. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction rates and gene abundances correlated significantly with water temperature, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), sediment total organic carbon (SOC), NO3-, NH4+, DOC/NO3-, iron ions, and sulfide. Understanding dissimilatory nitrate reduction is essential for restoring nitrate reduction capacity and improving and sustaining ecohealth of the river ecosystems.

Abstract:PurposeThe abundance of nitrogen (N)-cycling genes is frequently used to indicate N cycling and predict N2O emissions. However, it remains difficult to clearly define how soil N-cycling genes in different ecosystems respond to anthropogenic N additions.MethodsWe applied a meta-analysis approach to examine data about N-cycling genes (nifH, ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), nirK, nirS, and nosZ) in different ecosystems from 119 peer-reviewed articles.ResultsIn the ecosystems examined, the patterns of change in the abundances of the target genes, apart from AOA, varied considerably. This variation reflects the distinctive soil characteristics of ecosystems that develop when different forms of N are applied at different rates and over different durations. The nifH abundance decreased significantly, by 32.79%, in forests but did not change in grasslands and croplands. The AOB abundance increased in all three ecosystems, by 193.06% in grasslands, 73.26% in forests, and 151.86% in croplands, respectively. The denitrification gene abundances, namely the nirK, nirS, and nosZ, in croplands also increased significantly, by 60.74%, 47.42%, and 69.54%, respectively.ConclusionIn general, climate factors and long-term applications of organic N at high rates had significant effects on the gene abundances in different ecosystems, through their influence on soil properties. An enhanced understanding of how N additions influence the abundance of other N-cycling functional genes can help us improve our ability to model the populations and activities of microbial functional communities and predict N fluxes.

Effects of salinity on nitrogen reduction pathways in estuarine wetland sediments

Abstract:Denitrification, anammox, and DNRA are three important nitrogen (N) reduction pathways in estuarine sediments. Although salinity is an important variables controlling microbial growth and activities, knowledge about the effects of changing salinity on those three processes in estuarine and coastal wetland sediments are not well understood. Herein, we performed a 60-d microcosms experiment with different salinities (0, 5, 15, 25 and 35 ‰) to explore the vital role of salinity in controlling N-loss and N retention in estuarine wetland sediments. The results showed that sediment organic matter, sulfide, and nitrate (NO3-) were profoundly decreased with increasing salinity, while sediment ammonium (NH4+) and ferrous (Fe2+) varied in reverse patterns. Meanwhile, N-loss and N retention rates and associated gene abundances were differentially inhibited with increasing salinity, while the contributions of denitrification, anammox, and DNRA to total nitrate reduction were apparently unaffected. Moreover, denitrification rate was the most sensitive to salinity, and then followed by DNRA, while anammox was the weakest among these three processes. In other words, anammox bacteria showed a wide range of salinity tolerance, while both denitrification and DNRA reflected a relatively limited dynamic range of it. Our findings could provide insights into temporal interactive effects of salinity on sediment physico-chemical properties, N reduction rates and associated gene abundances. Our findings can improve understanding of the effects of saltwater incursion on the N fate and N balance in estuarine and coastal sediments.
Relative importance between nitrification and denitrification to N2O from a global perspective

Abstract:The average rate of N2O emitted from nitrification and denitrification was 8.33 and 7.54 μg N kg−1 day−1, respectively. Soil ammonia‐oxidizing microorganism (AOM):denitrifier ratio was a pivotal driver in the N2On:N2Od ratios. Soil pH exerted a more remarkable role in the N2On:N2Od ratio in croplands in contrast to natural ecosystems. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas, and its mitigation is a pressing task in the coming decade. However, it remains unclear which specific process between concurrent nitrification and denitrification dominates worldwide N2O emission. We snagged an opportunity to ascertain whence the N2O came and which were the controlling factors on the basis of 1315 soil N2O observations from 74 peer‐reviewed articles. The average N2O emission derived from nitrification (N2On) was higher than that from denitrification (N2Od) worldwide. The ratios of nitrification‐derived N2O to denitrification‐derived N2O, hereof N2On:N2Od, exhibited large variations across terrestrial ecosystems. Although soil carbon and nitrogen content, pH, moisture, and clay content accounted for a part of the geographical variations in the N2On:N2Od ratio, ammonia‐oxidizing microorganisms (AOM):denitrifier ratio was the pivotal driver for the N2On:N2Od ratios, since the AOM:denitrfier ratio accounted for 53.7% of geographical variations in N2On:N2Od ratios. Compared with natural ecosystems, soil pH exerted a more remarkable role to dictate the N2On:N2Od ratio in croplands. This study emphasizes the vital role of functional soil microorganisms in geographical variations of N2On:N2Od ratio and lays the foundation for the incorporation of soil AOM:denitrfier ratio into models to better predict N2On:N2Od ratio. Identifying soil N2O derivation will provide a global potential benchmark for N2O mitigation by manipulating the nitrification or denitrification.

Abstract:Abstract. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important ozone-depleting greenhouse gas produced and consumed by microbially mediated nitrification and denitrification pathways. Estuaries are intensive N2O emission regions in marine ecosystems. However, the potential contributions of nitrifiers and denitrifiers to N2O sources and sinks in China's estuarine and coastal areas are poorly understood. The abundance and transcription of six key microbial functional genes involved in nitrification and denitrification, as well as the clade II-type nosZ gene-bearing community composition of N2O reducers, were investigated in four estuaries spanning the Chinese coastline. The results showed that the ammonia-oxidizing archaeal amoA genes and transcripts were more dominant in the northern Bohai Sea (BS) and Yangtze River estuaries, which had low nitrogen concentrations, while the denitrifier nirS genes and transcripts were more dominant in the southern Jiulong River (JRE) and Pearl River estuaries, which had high levels of terrestrial nitrogen input. Notably, the nosZ clade II gene was more abundant than the clade I-type throughout the estuaries except for in the JRE and a few sites of the BS, while the opposite transcript distribution pattern was observed in these two estuaries. The gene and transcript distributions were significantly constrained by nitrogen and oxygen concentrations as well as by salinity, temperature, and pH. The nosZ clade II gene-bearing community composition along China's coastline had a high level of diversity and was distinctly different from that in the soil and in marine oxygen-minimum-zone waters. By comparing the gene distribution patterns across the estuaries with the distribution patterns of the N2O concentration and flux, we found that denitrification may principally control the N2O emissions pattern.

Abstract:Sedimentary denitrification and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) are two microbially-mediated nitrogen removal pathways with distinct climatic feedbacks. Estuaries receive large fluxes of anthropogenic nitrogen and serve as hotspots for nitrogen loss. Applying 15N isotope pairing technique and sediment intact core incubation in two subtropical estuaries, the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) and Jiulong River Estuary (JRE), we show that denitrification predominates the sedimentary nitrogen loss with a minor contribution (8.6 ± 7.5%) from anammox. Particulate organic matter degradation sustains the sedimentary nitrogen removal linking the nitrogen transformations between water column and sediment. Our results indicate that estuarine sediments exhibit high areal nitrogen removal rate, but play a relatively weak role in eliminating the nitrogen inputted from river basin due to the limited area. The riverine excess nitrogen will eventually enter into the adjacent continental shelf and be removed via phytoplankton assimilation-sedimentation-degradation-coupled nitrification-denitrification. In addition, sedimentary denitrification causes 1.8 ± 2.2% of nitrogen flow towards nitrous oxide (N2O) production and the derived N2O release flux accounts for 59% and 65% of the daily sea-air N2O emission in the YRE and JRE, respectively. These findings contribute to a better understanding of estuarine sedimentary nitrogen removal and associated climate feedbacks, and to the parameterization of Earth system models.

Abstract:Abstract The balance between estuarine denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) is critical for determining nitrogen loads received by oceans from inland waters. We aimed to determine the factors controlling the ratio between these processes and determining whether nitrogen was generally removed or recycled in estuaries. Rates of denitrification and DNRA with depth were measured in intact sediment cores in eleven estuaries along the coast of Victoria, Australia. The estuaries studied represent a range of biogeochemical conditions, land use and catchment size. At a pore‐water profile scale, the ratio of denitrification to DNRA was well‐predicted by a multiple regression model with nitrate concentration in the overlying water, dissolved pore water iron and ammonium as the predictor variables. Areal denitrification rates varied from 4 – 150 μmol m ‐2 h ‐1 and DNRA rates varied from 2 – 30 μmol m ‐2 h ‐1 , with the ratio of denitrification to DNRA spanning a range from denitrification‐dominated (denitrification/DNRA = 8.4) to DNRA‐dominated (denitrification/DNRA = 0.3). DNRA dominated at sites with high iron pools and high organic carbon to nitrate ratios. We conclude that low nitrate and high Fe 2+ availability generally enhances DNRA and drives an estuary towards being N‐recycling, rather than N‐removing.

Abstract:Denitrification community in wetland plays an important role in nitrogen removal. The present study investigated the seasonal and spatial dynamics of denitrification rate and nirS-denitrifier communities and the potential influential factors in a large wetland system treating polluted river water. Wetland denitrification rate and the abundance, richness, diversity and composition of nirS-denitrifier community were found to vary with season and sampling site. Both wetland denitrification rate and denitrifier community were related to plant type. Wetland soils and sediments differed greatly in either denitrification rate or denitrifier community structure. Wetland generally had lower denitrification rate and denitrifier abundance in summer than in spring and winter. Denitrification rate showed no direct correlation to denitrifier abundance but was positively correlated to denitrifier diversity. Denitrification rate could be mediated by denitrifier community structure. Moreover, Spearman rank correlation analysis suggested that denitrification rate was significantly correlated to sediment/soil ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, total phosphorus and pH, while denitrifier abundance was significantly correlated to total phosphorus and temperature. Nitrite, total nitrogen, total organic carbon, and the ratio of total organic carbon to total nitrogen showed significant correlations with wetland denitrifier diversity, while ammonia, nitrate, total nitrogen and total phosphorus might have important roles in shaping wetland denitrifier community structure. In addition, for each wetland sediment or soil, 0.8–46.2% of the retrieved nirS sequences could be related to the sequences from cultivated denitrifiers. Dechloromonas-like denitrifiers were more abundant in wetland sediments than in wetland soils.
